Capone has big news for fans of Lovecraft on film: the World Premiere of the long-lost THE EVIL CLERGYMAN is happening in Chicago with Combs, Crampton & more in attendance!!!
Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here.
In about two weeks here in the Chicago area, I'll be a part of the 10th annual Flashback Weekend Horror and Science-Fiction Convention, the city's longest-running horror show. And the line-up of guests and film screenings is fantastic, including director John Carpenter (presented a brand-new 30th anniversary digital print of THE THING), Linda Blair (hosting a 2K digital restoration of THE EXORCIST: THE VERSION YOU’VE NEVER SEEN), Tony Todd, Ken Foree, Danielle Harris & Kane Hodder (both of whom just wrapped on HATCHET III), and so many more folks. You can get all the details at Flashback Weekend's website. But that's not actually what I'm here to talk about…
A little bit of horror history will be made at this year's Flashback event. It turns out that in 1988, at the height of Empire Pictures success, Charles Band developed an anthology film called PULSEPOUNDERS, which would be comprised of three short film "sequels" to the studio's biggest hits. The first of the three films was TRANCERS: THE UNSEEN SEQUEL, starring Tim Thomerson and Helen Hunt; the film was a direct sequel to 1985's TRANCERS and was to take place before the events in TRANCERS 2 (1991). The second film was THE DUNGEONAMSTER SEQUEL, with Richard Moll returning to his 1984 role in the sci-fi classic.
Perhaps the most fascinating of the three films was H.P. LOVECRAFT'S THE EVIL CLERGYMAN, which wasn't so much a sequel but a return to the Lovecraft well, featuring performances by Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton (both of RE-ANIMATOR and FROM BEYOND fame), David Warner and David Gale.
(Keep in mind, these images are from the original work print, not the restored veresion.)

The three PULSEPOUNDERS segments were filmed and edited in 1987 before circumstances prevented them from ever being released. Recently, a PULSEPOUNDERS work print was discovered, and Charles Band and a team of digital experts have been working for the last year digitally restoring it. Richard Band, the composer of classic film scores such as RE-ANIMATOR and PUPPER MASTER, has composed an original lavish 1980s-style score for it. And now the first segment will be presented fully restored at Flashback Weekend.

H.P. LOVECRAFT'S THE EVIL CLERGYMAN will have its World Premiere on August 11 as part of Flashback Weekend at the Muvico Theaters Rosemont 18, with Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, Charles Band, and Richard Band on hand getting the whole Red Carpet treatment. A DVD release for THE EVIL CLERGYMAN is set for October 9, 2012, with restorations of TRANCERS: THE UNSEEN SEQUEL and the DUNGEONMASTER sequel to follow. If you're a fan of RE-ANIMATOR, FROM BEYOND, CASTLE FREAK, or any Lovecraft on film, I don't see how you can miss this event. Hope to see you there!

Or is it some sort of continuation of Re-Animator?

Shorts or full movies ? short movies bug me. I want them to be longer.
by higgledyhiggles
I know, but there`s never much payoff from a short.

I fucking love the early Empire movies, but c'mon give us Pulsepounders as intended.
by adeceasedfan
Now we're gonna pay triple. Oh well better than not at all.
-
How come no mention of who directed this? Because, let's face it, if it's not Stuart Gordon then this is a lot less cool.

Anyone who doesn't want to see the Trancers segment is a squid!
by Stegman84
Never even heard about this. Look forward to seeing all three bits at some point in the future.

That and Reanimator probably shaped many teenage lads love of horror in the VHS heyday. Glad i was the right age in the mid 80's for that video explosion.
-
There is a lesser-known Lovecraft story by that name, but I have no idea who loosely this is based on it.

Yes, The Evil Clergyman is short story that Lovecraft wrote!
by Sam Clegg
It's an ok story, but I'll take anything Lovecraft, while waiting for them to make At the Mountains of Madness. Still, I was at the Lovecraft panel at San Diego Comic Con, and I heard that the film is fun, but not that close to the story, and it is not connected to Re-Animator. It appears that way for most Lovecraft films made in the 1980s. No matter what, I will be seeking this out.

It's called PSYCHO!!!!!! Nothing wrong with nostalgia, but let's not elevate these things beyond their true worth. Which is modest.

Everyone stop what the fuck you are doing RIGHT NOW and go to that link for The Whisperer in the Darkness because it's fucking mind-blowingly good! It's done in 50's schlock-horror style, but with the end-of-the-world mind-fuckedness of Lovecraft. It's directed and edited very nicely and the creatures are pretty cool looking! I want the Blu-ray IMMEDIATELY!

Its a sad world we live in where the best Lovecraft movie is Cast a deadly spell.

That's what your typo above looked like to me. Gave me a good laugh.

but at least we did!

and it's fantastic. The blu-ray looks great. The cinematography and overall pacing is a big improvement on the silent film Call Of Cthulhu that the same group of people did a few years ago. Definitely check it out if you're into Lovecraft

an' 'e's got th' Graveyard Gerbil wit' 'im!
-
I gots to get me one of those!
-
About five years ago they did a silent movie version of 'Call of Cthulu'. It is really great and it's fun to watch a 'modern' silent film. Great sound track, too. Highly recommended.

Oh, OK. Thanks arcane1 and asimovlivesdies. I had not heard of that story.

Thought I had read all of Lovecraft’s stuff. Will have to check it out.

I find it somewhat surprising that some of you haven't heard of the HPLAS before seeing how this is the site where all the hip kids, supposedly, hang out. Glad to hear the movie has finally been released.

The HPLHS is awesome. Check out their "call of cthulhu" and "whisperer in darkness"

These guys get it. Hell, the envelopes that the DVDS come in are great. Lovecraft nerds should also check out HPPodcraft.coms outstanding series of HPL podcasts.

looks like she is in a Big Black Monster Dick porno awaiting a couple of loads coming her way from both sides. Hot.
-
Does Barbra Crampton get nekkid or not? Not a deal breaker if she doesn't but all that bouncy 80's loveliness would be a very, very good thing.
-
I even used to watch The Young & The Restless after school just to see her. You can never have enough Lovecraft = young Barb Crampton..... Make it so.
-
Glad to know I'm not the only one who's gay around here. Jk. Luckily Y&R was my moms favorite soap, so if I just happened to be in the same room didn't necessarily mean I was watching. Damn you Victor! Man I loved Barbara Crampton so much I wore a flat spot in my Re-Animator and From Beyond dubs.
-
Not that there is anything wrong wit.... Oh I'll shut up now before I choke on my Chick-Fil-A sandwich.
-
That's good.

Their new Black Metal album - OUT NOW! *featuring the number one hits "The Black Hole (of Richie G.)" and "Gere-Shift'rrrrr"

Sounds like a good time

EVIL CLERGYMAN at least offers us another opportunity to see Barbara Crampton in the flesh (scene-stealing nudity). I met her, only last year, at a MD horror convention; still looks quite foxy!

I´m buying this DVD.
