John Ary On The 'Dumness' Of THE WATCH!!
John Ary here with a look at The Watch.
It's dum. I mean really dum... so dum you forget to properly spell the word dum. I hate to admit it though, but I did laugh several times.
If your only expectation for a Ben Stiller comedy is to gain mild enjoyment over an 90-minute stretch of time,The Watch MAYBE worth a trip to the theater. If you are looking for anything more than that, and I mean ANYTHING, stay at home.

Word is this movie is racist.
-
It's a comedy, laugh it up, have fun, that's the point. Maybe the story sucks but who cares, you have 3 solid comedians in this. And some clownshoe on nordlings post had the balls to say Ben stiller was never funny. really?....
-
I could see why someone would call the portrayal of the night watchman at the Costco racist. He just received his citizenship and chose to celebrate with stolen booze and a tattoo. It didn't bother me too much as the film portrayed white suburbanites as petty and dumb.
-
How, if that scene description is accurate, is that scene racist? Are foreign-born people more likely to get drunk and get tattoos? Is that a stereotype I'm not aware of? Does the scene indicate that foreigners are inferior to Americans? Does the director hate the foreign born person? How is it racist?
-
The only reason i would see this.
-
You'd think they'd have one non-white friend.

Also so dumb it makes you use the word maybe when you meant the term may be
by lochkray
What a powerful, powerful movie.
-
Why is it that in all of the animations, Harry is only moderately overweight and can walk?
-
maybe try idiocy next time?
-
Ayoade is alright. He does about as well as he can with the material and stands out from the other three leads. He works well in the role with his odd mannerisms, accent and style. For anyone who hasn't seen Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, The IT Crowd, or The Mighty Boosh, he's much more interesting and funny in those. Hopefully this movie will serve as a gateway for Ayoade to write, direct and star in more high profile features and projects.

Please refer to the second paragraph.

Aside from Simon Pegg and his chubby buddy I don't find the English funny at all.
by kindofabigdeal
Americans acting like Brits is funny. (Beatles scene is Dewey Cox was awesome) I look at this guy and wonder what the fuss is all about. I will reserve final judgement until I see this. Not gonna seek out that other crap you mentioned because if it truly was funny, I wouldn't have to seek it out.

Before bed tonight, look in the mirror and say "I am a closed-minded idiot, and I don't deserve, nor would I understand, things like Little Britain, The I.T. Crowd or The Office. And the man's name is Nick Frost, for God's sake, considering I'm such a tremendous fan of his. Now sleep tight, you slobbering dumbbell."
-
I'll wait for blu-ray
-
Not surprised but it will still probably make $ like that horrid Adam Sandler movie where he plays sister and brother or whatever.

Mrshitsandwich: if it looks like shit and it smells like shit then guess what.
by kindofabigdeal
My bad on not knowing Nick Frosts name. He's not exactly A-list but he seems like a cool, likeable fellow. You on the other hand sound like a hipster douche.

4 talented stars and we get this pile of shit. I read the script. IT WAS FUNNY! I blame Akiva. He's got no business directing anything longer than 3 minutes.
by Mennen
WHAT A WASTE. Seriously, Akiva, find a new line of work. This ain't your bag.
-
The film may be asinine but it can't be any more moronic than a person that misspells a four letter word.

John Ary, do you you know what you do to hetrosexual men with your silky tones?

Make their willy burp is what, son.

My try at subtle humor is a failure? I guess I'll just stick to writing Batman jokes for Dane Cook. That's where the money is at.

johnary, to be fair it wasn't that subtle. mr.stiggs is just an idiot

Indeed.

Wait, did you just edit the article to make it appear as if the mispelling of the word "dum" was intentional or did I really misinterpret the text? One of us is looking pretty stupid right now.
-
Loved it!
-
I added the apostrophes around dum in the headline to curb the comments about my ability to spell the word dumb. I would hate for someone to see the original headline and pass up the article thinking that its written by a moron. I thought it was cute, but now understand how it could be misinterpreted as an inarticulate headline written by a first grader. I prefer folks to see the video or read the body of the column before calling me stupid. Your initial comment made me rethink the headline and for that, I thank you. In regards to your follow up comment, frankly, having to explain the joke kind of makes us both look stupid. Me, for attempting to write an ironic, yet silly introduction that failed to properly connect with SOME readers and you, for not understanding it. My bad. To set the record straight, I know how to spell the word dumb... S-T-I-G-G-S. Sincerely, John Avary

“I know how to spell the word dumb.” --John Avary. Do you?
by Mr.Stiggs
Excuse me for misinterpreting an “intentional” spelling error on a web site that typically features articles which appear as if they were written by illiterate adolescents. I'm fairly sure that you added the “so dum you forget to properly spell the word dum” portion to the article after my initial comment. This, along with my previous statement, would explain my reaction to the original text.
-
For clarification purposes, the only part of this post that was amended were the apostrophes on the word dum in the headline.

"the only part of this post that was amended were the apostrophes on the word dum in the headline". If that statement is true then I offer you my apology. In my defense I will submit that if the headline "John Ary On The Dumness Of The Watch!!" appeared on Film Journey, The Front Row (the New Yorker), the A/V Club or even Variety then it would have been readily apparent that you were making a linguistic pun. But this is Ain't It Cool News. Can you blame me?
-
yes that is not the final word, but it says a whole lot. I like most of those actors though and i would fast forward through this at some point from a download or netflix or something.
-
It was pretty obvious what he was doing there, esp if you read the start of the article.
-
Apology accepted. Also, I went overboard with the whole "S-T-I-G-G-S" thing. Sorry about that.
-
It's a damn shame that you have to explain this.

Well, I laughed during the trailer; apparantly, that's all the humor there is.

... this could have been the new cast for "Ghostbusters 3"
-
sorry man but British comedy rules, we dont have to worry about advertisers etc and being oh so family friendly! The US versions of Shameless and the office suck ass big time! They are just not funny, even when you add Ferrell I love the Big Bang Theory but even that isn't a patch of The IT Crowd. And finding Pegg funny is just bollocks as he isnt and is a talent less fuck!
-
Waste of money! DON'T SEE THIS FILM!!! It SUCKED!!!!!!
-
The way in which you used it, "may" and "be" should be two separate words. Just sayin... Can't somebody proof read and edit these stories?
-
I guess the video is done because Johnny can't spell...outside of that, he should avoid the camera all together
