Here's The Trailer For Ang Lee's LIFE OF PI!
Nordling here.
I've not read Yann Martel's book THE LIFE OF PI, but it's built up a large following since its release in 2001, and a few directors have circled the project since the book's publication. But Ang Lee has definitely put his own personal touch on the material judging from the imagery that we get in this new trailer. It's quite beautiful, and I may have to pick up the book just to see what the fuss is about. Yes, some scenes look obviously CGI but there's a dreamlike quality to the images that makes it not matter. It's an impressive trailer, and I'm very curious to see the finished product. Here's the trailer, courtesy of Apple:
LIFE OF PI comes out this November.

They need a better trailer to get me to see this.

They could fight Tony the Tiger.

Wow. I dont know the book but this looks amazing. Fresh and original. Hope the story is as tight as the images.

In an interview, Ang Lee has expressed his excitement at this, his first 3D..

..looking forward to it any which way as even this 2D trailer looks bloody amazing!
-
But if a tiger is hungry, it will eat you, make no mistake.
-
But it looks visually stunning. I wasn't a big fan of the book, but to see the visuals come alive like this? Well done, Ang Lee.

Top Story: Kristen Stewart cheats on R-Patz...surely this should be top story ?
by higgledyhiggles
-
I thought it was fantastic! (but starts slowly - hence the question)
-
Bonus points for finding the hidden dragon!
-
but there should have been an orangutan, a hyena, a zebra? on the lifeboat as well. Leaving them off changes the whole theme of the story. Did anyone see them in the trailer? I didn't. Never mind, I just watched it again, and there was another animal under the tarp with the tiger. I think it was the hyena.
-
what I liked about the book is that it approached the fantastical scenario, for the most part, with a bit of grit and reality - this all looks a bit benign.

The 3 greatest challenges for a Director to work with: Kids, Animals, Water... this ones got them all!!
by Rebel Scumb
A genuine triple threat! I remember thinking while reading the book what a nightmare it would be to try and make a movie of this, but if pulled off right could be great. Looks great I think, more fantastical than I would have pictured and less gritty, but great in it's own way. That shot of Pi diving into the water of the sinking ship and the zebra swims by is pure movie magic. I wonder if they'll keep all the present day Toronto stuff.
-
It was just the orangutan and the tiger with pi on the lifeboat for a while and then only the tiger. I read the book 7 years ago but I'm pretty sure there were no more animals on that boat.
-
When he falls down with the boat, you see the zebra in it. And when he sees the Tiger for the first time, there is another animal with it.
-
I read the book and thoroughly enjoyed it right up to the last chapter... which... kind of destroys everything that went before in a really shitty way and leaves a bad taste in your mouth. If this film is not including the other animals on the boat then maybe it might also not include the stupid last chapter also. It would definitely be a better story (and a more palatable family movie) without the ugly epilogue section.
-
shakak, I see Empire gave THE DARK KNIGHT RISES five out of five stars - what comment did they make about Harry?

You KNOW you were thinkin' it >_< .. you KNOW you were
-
Pi? that's that 3.14 thing, isn't it? what on earth sort of movie is that supposed to be?
-
And Harry was right about TDKR!
-
Wow... did not expect that reaction. It's way too artificial.
-
Was the Empire comment something like that?
-
mrbong, the Indian kids name is Pi - dont ask why its a long and fucking unnecessary story. Short answer is LIFE OF KRISHNARUUPADOOP wouldnt have fitted on billboards.
-
Listen to their latest podcast, they scoff at "some comic fans, well ONE comic fan" wanting to see manbat and clayface in the movie.
-
And this trailer has only confirmed my attitude.
-
As did the clip in front of PROMETHEUS, with the flying fish scene. The 3-D effects were amazing — even one shot where you're share the character's POV while he's blinking!

by NightArrows

-
Harry's truth? The fat ginger cunt was right on the money on just about everything. Well maybe not Manbat, that was just silly.
-
......with animals. I haven't read the book, but that's the feeling I get from the trailer.
-
Looks amazing, and just for the record when Pi (short for Piscine) first gets to the lifeboat, it does indeed contain a tiger, a hyena, a zebra and an orangutan. If you've forgotten, you weren't paying attention. I always felt the book could have been made into an amazing animation. That would have been my preferred adaptation. Fingers crossed that this is the absolute tits.
-
Sorry douchebag, but there is no "truth". And frankly, you mark yourself as a giant twat for using the term "nolanite". So run and go fuck yourself.
-
Although I have to admit that every time someone mentions Life of Pi, I always think *they're going to make a sequel to Darren Aronofsky's debut film about a paranoid mathematician?*

If this is going to be in 3D, I think it might outshine Hugo.
-
Might turn out to be a case of style over substance. Could have sworn i saw Haddock and Tintin on the high-seas just then. The only Ang Lee film i never warmed to was,"Taking Woodstock", but i'm willing to give this venture a day in court. I still think his version of "Hulk" was underrated. He should take on another Marvel project in the near future. Chances=0.
-
I am somewhat interested... I feel like this will all be a no-talky film taking place entirely on a boat with flashbacks to some chick he loved. I'll definitely be interested simply for the visuals and 3-D... What the heck? Might as well see something different!
-
say it isn't so! The only other person I know who hated the ending is my mom... Actually, I'm not sure she hated it, but she's a very literal sort of person, and she was very deeply troubled and frustrated by it.

Spoiler (slightly)....... I was kinda excited to see how they would do the algae island (I think that's what it was) scene from the book but the part they showed in the trailer looked like it missed the mark. But, it's been a few years since I read the book so maybe I'm remembering incorrectly how it was described.

-
I got the feeling that the author realized his book was looking a bit slim.. more of a short story than a novel. And so he stuck in some redundant shit at the start about why the kids name is Pi, and he stuck in some redundant shit at the end with that stupid interview epilogue. He just needed to bump up the word count to the bare minimum he could get away with!
-
Maudlin, pseudo-spiritual hokem.
-
Has an office at the university across the river. Shows up at the writer-in-residence intros at the public library.

Looks like they might have been omitted from the script in favor of the zebra. I guess they don't add anything to the story that the tiger doesn't already.

I can´t judge until i watch the whole movie.

Harry next review: "Harry thinks Vampire Whore Bats From Mars in the Greatest Movie of the Year, and Here's Why!"
by kidicarus
-
Few directors have the sensitive touch that Lee has, all of his work in the 90's was top notch, especially the still heavily underrated the ice storm. He did had a misstep with Hulk, but for the most part his work has been solid, and at moments he truly reaches greatness. This is a good mix of director and material.

People were pissed with Harry for his unprofessional tirade; outburst; spitting the dummy; being a prick; immature, whatever, about a film he chose not to like. I'm all for animals in movies, but whats the point in putting a cg animal while it's purpose is obviously to try to hit the emotional cord of the audience?? CG monsters or fantastic creatures are fine, we don't have real life references, but CG animals as important characters (sidekick? lol)?? It gives me the same feeling when i see humanoids robots (and i love robots, but why human-like?!? it's just weird)

For some reason, in front of Prometheus, the theater I was at screened an extended clip from this movie in lieu of a trailer. It was like 4 minutes of finished 3D footage, thescene where he is brandishing the spear at the tiger. It was pretty solid. And Ang Lee is NOT using the 3D subtly here. The spear juts out of the screen constantly. It was kind of jarring.

Remember the best and most visually impressive scene you saw at "Prometheus"?
by The_Genteel_Gentile
Me too, and it was from Ang Lee's "Life Of Pi"! I'm betting this will be a strong contendor for best visual effecs prizes, as well as possibly the big prestige awards.
-
So it's a life boat with an Indian boy, a hyena, a zebra with a broken leg, an orangutan and a tiger all on board. It's done quite realistically, with the animals avoiding each other at first, more stressed and frightened than interested in fighting. Then, eventually, the hyena kills the zebra (quite graphically in the book), followed by the orangutan. When it looks like Pi is in trouble with the hyena, the tiger comes out from under a tarp stretched across the prow, and kills the hyena. I won't spoil what happens to the tiger, but the book is well worth your time... if you can make it past the first 100 pages that is, which are almost unreadable. Also, fuck your mother.
