Two MAN OF STEEL Teaser Trailers Just Flew In And, Boy, Are Their Arms Tired!!!

The Kidd here...

As we try to get back to some sense of normalcy in our lives following the events of the other night, it only makes sense that another symbol of our culture show up in order to help us move forward with strength and courage... and that's where Superman comes in.

Warner Bros. has released a pair of teaser trailers for Zack Snyder's MAN OF STEEL, both of which are randomly attached to different prints of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES in theatres. Therefore, you don't know which one you might see ahead of time, but here's your taste of Henry Cavill sporting the cape, complete with Pa Kent (courtesy of Yahoo!) and Jor-El (via MSN) voiceovers...

    Comic con footage was better

    by eric haislar

But I like the tone of this. Also there where no trailers when I was batman last night. Anyone else have the same?

  • July 21, 2012, 1:05 p.m. CST

    Horrible teaser...

    by Daremo

That's the most un-Superman looking trailer ever. I thought it was a movie for the Greatest Catch.

The one about how a Superhero has been gone for years, and comes back all emo and somber and needs a big event to get him back to being the Superhero he was least Batman punched somebody

cool but i wanna see more superman

    by Jackson

  • What the fuck is wrong with you people? Classless idiots.

  • Seriously...isn't it enough that those people saw it first? Are they seriously gonna keep that genius trailer from us but peddle out THIS crap? UGH. I was at Comic Con, and unless you were in line at like 5 in the morning you weren't getting in. And we're punished for that? Just sow us that damn teaser. Please!

  • July 21, 2012, 1:09 p.m. CST

SR teaser was better. The money shot needed to be better.

    by Charlie

Yeah it's fine, but what would really have sold it would have been a way better money shot. We believe a man can fly since the original. We needed to see something way more amazing and superman. Instead of him flying at mid range. If this had lead into something breathtaking, it could have been an amazing trailer. The reverence for superman, which Superman Returns had, has to be toned down. For the record. I absolutely loved Superman Returns. I understand the flaws, but dammit, it was a great superman film. With a great superman.

    Terrence Malick's Superman

    by sinus111

At least it doesn't look like a video game like most of Snyder's shit does.

  • July 21, 2012, 1:17 p.m. CST

    Looks fairly jingoistic

    by Sodomy_Joe_Shitpants

a la Michael Bay. Americana and such. Which isn't a bad way to go with Superman. Truth, Justice and the American way. Jingoistic in its very nature. Tone just feels really heavy and dark for a Superman film. Maybe we'll all be surprised. Who knows.

  • July 21, 2012, 1:18 p.m. CST

This is Snyder? THIS IS SNYDER??!

    by 2soon2eat

I don't know if the film is going to have this tone (which is note perfect) but this does NOT feel like a Snyder film. Should I not be suprise. Because I am...surprised.

  • July 21, 2012, 1:18 p.m. CST

    That looked...

    by cosmic_dolphin

completely underwhelming. It's going to take alot more than that to get me excited after the snooze-fest that was Superman Returns. Plus I've seen nothing from Sneyder to give me confidence he can bring any substance to his films. Only Nolan's involvement is giving me reason to not dismiss this.

Man Of Steel: A Terence Malick film

    by Nasty In The Pasty

    How pretentious can you get...?

  • It was my understanding the contrails were generated through a combination of soot from the exhaust and turbulence generated by the aircraft disturbing the natural moisture in the atmosphere. Once the air is stirred up the water in the atmosphere sticks to the soot and forms the artificial clouds we see as contrails. Or am I just completely wrong on this.

unless he is farting water vapor

    by animas

    contrails are from engine exhaust

  • I went into the trailer expecting a lot of overused CGI, muted colors, and slow-mo and what I got was a beautiful Terrence Malickesque version of the man of steel. Here's hoping that the actual film doesn't let this trailer down the way Shyamalan's "Lady In the Water" did the absolutely dreadful excuse for a film that was.

Solid Teaser ... And TDKR was pretty damn good too

    by ass clown

Harry Knowles has a penchant for providing reviews that match my exact opposite tastes. Look at the history, he gushed over Green Lantern, Star Wars: Episode 2 (I dont think I will ever be able to let that one go), Indiana Jones 4, and Godzilla. I still remember the Green Lantern review which included a picture of his special ring given to him by the studio. If Harry hated all of Nolans Batman movies, I would give him a break for bitching about deviations from the source material. You cant love Dark Knight and Batman Begins and then suddenly complain about changing the comic book story in this one.

  • July 21, 2012, 1:40 p.m. CST

Why does he leave contrails at the end?

    by Rupee88

Makes no sense..he's not a plane: Contrails ( /ˈkɒntreɪlz/; short for "condensation trails") or vapour trails are long thin artificial clouds that sometimes form behind aircraft. Their formation is most often triggered by the water vapour in the exhaust of aircraft engines

Every new tidbit I see, including this teaser, makes me want to see this movie. This teaser is almost anti superhero. It's clearly trying to to distance itself from the Donner verse. I love the mood it's going for. Something different.

    by BNITT

...I mean really, how do you compare Brando's monologue to loser Russell Crowe and cheesy Costner. The two of them combined equal the testosterone of an ant.

  • I'm slightly amused that I naively thought my Malick comment would be the first to make that connection on these boards when in reality, it was like the tenth. And I would state this as a positive regarding the taste of cinema of those on this board, but it appears that most here meant it as a negative, shame.

  • We need more spectacle, more BIG moments, this needs to be a big effects movie, crazy shit we've never seen but always WANTED to see Superman do. We don't need any more goddamn tugging at the heartstrings bullshit. GIVE US A FREAKING SUPERMAN MOVIE!

  • July 21, 2012, 1:50 p.m. CST

But can he flick peanuts at a mirror?

    by TheSlapBetCommisioner

All this stuff that he's outdated, passe and uninteresting....seriously, when a Superman theme swells..the dude does the classic open shirt, S logo reveal, whips those specs off and flies into action....well, does anyone give a shit if he's en vogue or not? It's THE classic superhero and embodiment of wish fulfilment. So far, I gotta say I'm super pumped for this. Cavill seems to look the part..he has a maturity about him that I think Routh from the get go really lacked. He always looked like Superboy, just too young to really own the part. Zimmer will bring the goods for the theme. Will it be as good as Williams? No, of course not, but it will serve the film well. (Though Zimmer has the annoying habit of building up to a crescendo and instead of taking into a higher key or octave and into a another gear of epicness....he just kinda lets the theme run down...) The big question is..the story. No one wants to see a boring ass Superman who is depressed (unless he's flicking peanuts at a mirror). I like the humanisation of the character and actually am digging the Batman Begins theme throughout, but we REALLY could do with an all out hero right now and a true beacon of hope that Superman should be. This could be a really big hit for WB. I think there is an appetite for Superman and he is despite what anyone tells you, the biggets Superhero in the world and most recognised icon. Superman deserves another great outing and some celluloid Justice....hopefully MOS delivers.

  • Maybe the full trailer will deliver what the teaser is building towards. I'm with you gk1, still miss the John Williams theme it feels a bit bland without it. I'm guessing it'll be November/December before we get the real deal trailer. All things considered, nice start Snyder. (",)

Loved this trailer when I saw it last night...

    by Dranem

It just felt like a new type of Superman movie than what I was expecting (even different than what I was expecting from Snyder). I love the Crowe narration along with the imagery. And on top of everything The Dark Knight Rises was incredible.

My love for Donner's Superman rivals Quints love for Jaws.

    by Gabba-UK

And I'm stoked for this version. We'll always have Donner's version and I'm very pleased that they seem to be doing their own thing with the myth. I'm also happy that Williams theme isn't making an appearance. Not that its bad, but that it brings it's own baggage and expectation. The only composer that could top it is Williams himself and he still hasn't, Superman was his greatest score ever. And Nolan seems to be having a very positive effect on Snyder's style. Looking forward to a full trailer.

Whilst I'm not a fan boy, I do have an appreciation of Superman lore, and like most people have enjoyed the comics and movies at various intervals in my life. With this in mind, I (along with many others that I assume are part of the mass market to whom this movie is aimed) know that something just doesn't feel right with this trailer and its tone. In short, this grungy, real world, Batman Nolan-verse scenario isn't suited to Superman. Sure, people can bleat about re-imagining and re-positioning for the 21st century, and of course, it worked for Batman, but you gotta admit, Superman is a whole other ball game regards of how many comic crossovers the two heroes may have had. For me, Superman is about big colors, big characters, hope, destiny and kiss ass action. All the things which, in actual fact, I think Synder is capable of delivering were it not for Nolan's fishing boats and emo navel gazing. This is Superman not a remake of Ghandi so give us our big, blue bird not some weary, downbeat half bat.

  • July 21, 2012, 2:31 p.m. CST

Gorgeous Trailer. Also: If there was no internet...

    by The Real McClane

When I was a kid, the only time you got to see a trailer was before the film you were about to see. I remember the first time I saw the Jurassic Park teaser… I had absolutely no damn clue what I was watching until the T-Rex and his fucking foot slammed down into that mud in the storm. That surprise… that totally mind-blowing moment... was unbelievable. I may have shit my pants. This trailer is cut the same way and I love it for that same reason. When seen out of context, it's brilliant. If you didn't know this was a Superman film, you didn't know who's directing it and you had no clue who was in the title role (just like Christopher Reeve, by the way), your brains would be crushed into paste when you got that last shot of him flying and the updated "S" logo. The best part: this teaser doesn't give a damn thing away about the plot or overall narrative.. it's just a couple of amazing voiceovers about the idea of the character and the tone it's going for. I love it.

By the early looks of it: Snyder is Nolan-fied

    by aphextwin

Dammit!..I would have truly liked to see a Zack Snyder-ised Superman Movie, including his trademark abundance of slow mo and painterly shots...but I know I'm in the vast Minority...this looks like a movie any other semi-competent director could have done...I hope I'm wrong though

  • Kent! Where's your heat suit! We're in a volcano!

  • July 21, 2012, 3 p.m. CST

    by Rupee88

I agree with you. Snyder is being Nolan's bitch. I'm sure he doesn't want to do it this way but is going along with the plan.

    Nice start...consider me teased.

    by Darth_Kaos

But I want more Superman in following teasers/trailers, which I'm sure will happen as it grows closer to release. I hope it's not Malick -ky. I think Malick is soooooooooo overrated. He's a Kubrick wannabe, but makes let's interesting movie (BTW- as he ever had a hit movie?). As for Snyder, I liked is Dawn of Dead remake (the only remake I've liked) and Watchmen doesn't get much credit, but it's brilliant. I hate, I mean hate 300!....I tried watching Sucker Punch on HBO, but it was so bad. He's 50/50 to me. Hoping for the best. Expecting meh.

As I said earlier, Williams Superman score is peerless. But it was for Donners film. Singer got away with using it again because it was a sequel to Donners film. This is neither. I say, give Snyder, Nolan and Zimmer a chance with this one.

  • July 21, 2012, 3:15 p.m. CST

    The flight looked great.

One of the main problems of Superman Returns apart from almost everything is that Superman was a CGI character for most of the flight shots. The last shot of him flying before the end credits was horrible. It's great that the shot in MOS was at a further distance.BTW..the same sonic boom effect was shown in SR when he shoots out the elevator to save Lois. I can't understand why people are shitting themselves over it here. He did just fly through some clouds. I have no problems with him working on the boat. It's at least something different which is what MOS needs. Yes..I know Zod again but at least Lex Luthor isn't trying a land grab scheme in least I hope not. Superman needs to fight more powerful enemies and hopefully they will get a chance to do that later on.

Their formation is most often triggered by the water vapour in the exhaust of aircraft engines, but can also be triggered by the changes in air pressure in wingtip vortices or in the air over the entire wing surface. So Superman's body itself can create them. Hasn't anyone studied physics?

And as for the quality of the teaser, does everyone remember the teaser for The Dark Knight? It was a 30 second long look at the Bat signal with two lines of dialogue! It's really amazing that we have so many people who can predict the future! While you are all at it, can I have the winning Powerball numbers, please?

  • July 21, 2012, 3:29 p.m. CST

    Just a "meh" from me.

    by KnowItAllFromCali

The original, despite some flaws, is still one of my favorite movies. Yet I am ready for a new take. The tone of this is too dark and the music was way off, but I suppose it's because they don't have a real theme, yet. I actually thought the "money shot" at the end was nice, but I'm not sure if the contrails were appropriate. This is a teaser, though, so I'm fine with not seeing too much too soon.

  • July 21, 2012, 3:29 p.m. CST

Why is so many on here so fucking negative?

    by mastermold

It's a teaser, you quiffs. A TEASER! You're not supposed to see everything. You're not supposed to see tons of "money shots". The shot of Superman streaking up into the heavens is a perfect shot to close a teaser with, and it looked pretty damn good. I liked this for what it was -- a tease. Hence the name "teaser". Everyone is crapping on this before they've even seen it. Get a life!

  • July 21, 2012, 3:34 p.m. CST

    by Rupee88

Everyone on here isn't negative. Most everyone loved the Avengers and also most loved The Dark Knight. People on here are HONEST for the most part with their thoughts and feelings. And most movies suck, so it's not a stretch that this one will too. I personally think it will be good but it would have had more potential with Nolan mucking it up and trying to make it just like Batman. He did a good job with those for the most part and needs to move on.

  • Nolanizing Superman is a mistake, there's no two ways around it.

  • I like Watchmen but everything else he has done hasn't done much for me. The footage here and the editing of it has me intrigued. I think Superman, as a near invincible alien, would have to spend time building a humanistic world view in order to be an effective protector of our species. When Superman's struggles are physical, I don't much care because unless he's faced with magic or kryptonite, he's not even breaking a sweat. I'm not a Superman geek so my expectations and wants are prob different then the ultra-fans. Consider me intrigued now. Before this teaser I didn't care an iota.

  • July 21, 2012, 3:42 p.m. CST

    by hank henshaw

Some clotheslines, some boat, a flying bird, a kid with a red towel, some guy in a beard hitching on a truck, a tiny superman flying in the distance. THat's it. What's so awesome about that? Just because Nolan is involved. If that hadn't been the case, it wouldn't be "freaking awesome".

This got more applause than the whole Dark Knight Rises at our movie theater. Seems a lot of people never really liked the "S" shield on the Returns movie, this is a nice change of pace. The fact that they show Clark doing a dangerous job, they are seriously trying to give a different feel to his character. I figured by now they would have the superman theme up and running. Makes me worry from that standpoint. Just get Williams to make a new theme. Mark

    Dark and gritty, shaky-cam Superman.

    by darthvedder81

Sigh. That's just the wrong tone for Superman. One of the great aspects of the Donnerverse was the warm, rich look of the films. Pure Americana. This has the look of the modern "action" picture, all dimly lit and gritty. Richard Donner and Chris Reeve got that character so right it's hard to believe anyone will ever top it. And the reason so many want to hear the John Williams theme is that it's become an icon of the character. The Superman legend is one that has been added to and evolved from the beginning. He didn't even fly at first! You can't have Superman without Williams anymore than you can have him without a cape.

    by WeylandYutani

and I have not been impressed with the production stills released to date. But that was a first class teaser. It almost looks like Snyder was channeling Terrence Malick. Perhaps Nolan has tamed Snyder a bit (or a lot). I think the trick will be holding that tone for the origin story, but I hope there are bright bursts of Superman colour later in the film. Still hohum about Snyder overall, but this does look like WB/DC have decided to handle the property with great care.

This teaser is identical to Superman Returns's

    by Ribbons

Not hating, just saying. I know Superman and Spider-Man fans are a large and ornery bunch. I don't think that means Man of Steel is going to be exactly the same as Superman Returns; in fact I suspect it will be very different. But I also don't think it's going to look like a Terrence Malick film. That sort of cognitive dissonance just seems more like a hook for a preview than anything else. I just think it's worth pointing out that, unintentionally or not, the first statement they make about their "radically different" take on Superman is literally exactly the same as their last take on Superman, besides for shot composition. I also hate to point it out, but the names attached to and the "reboot" status that has recently been conferred upon this project makes it hard to ignore that a world-traveling, blue-collar-job-working, destiny-defying, pre-Superman Superman looks incredibly similar to Batman Begins. I'm not a huge fan of Snyder's, but I like the Americana vibe. All of the Superman movies -- well, 1, 2 and Returns, anyway -- have had strong elements but were never completely successful, in my opinion (although the first one came pretty close). Here's hoping they can tap into something interesting about the character's mythos with this story.

We don't know how Superman flies so

    by MrD

there's no way to argue whether or not he would leave something resembling a contrail behind. It's a cool visual, and something that is (most likely) unrelatd to the plot, so I'm not going to pick at it.

  • At the same time he wants to socialize and feel the connection to a human. Same reason he is working as a fisherman even though he doesn't need to do it - he just wants to live a normal life. He's being the reluctant hero, going off on a nomadic quest to "find" himself, just like Bruce Wayne did. Predictably, he's going to come across a life changing choice where he must intervene with Superman's powers and he realizes that he can't run away from his destiny and that he must become Superman. Unfortunately all this seems to look like is another origin story, or how he becomes or decides to be Superman.

  • Great teaser I thought.

  • July 21, 2012, 4:45 p.m. CST

for the idiots that are pissed about the contrails...

    by WeylandYutani

yes, most contrails are caused by jet engine exhaust, but they are are also caused by high pressure on the aircraft's superstructure when approaching high subsonic and move into transonic speeds. In that final shot, Supes is transonic and then goes supersonic as he pulls away from camera.

  • July 21, 2012, 5 p.m. CST

You really have no clue... idiot.

    by Paulisius

  • We're not talking about a jet fighter going mach 1 or 2. We're talking about the speed at which meteors enter the atmosphere - often at 20,000+ miles per hour and sometimes considerably faster - there is a noticable distortion of the atmosphere around them, obviously, as it has nowhere to move to in time. What you see as contrails is actually supposed to be the pressure wave in front of Superman - the air is compressed in front of him as he moves too quickly for it to simply flow around him. Quit your bitching, read some physics books, and enjoy the movie. By the way, trailer in front of Dark Knight Rises today seemed really short...shorter than the leaked comicon teaser, even. And for the record....Dark Knight rises...Harry couldn't have been more wrong as far as I'm concerned. There were some questionable bits of dialogue and the pacing and handling of the passage of time seemed off at points, too....but all in all a solid close to the series. My only REAL problem would have to be with the ending - certain people are supposed to start working with certain people, rather than never see them again, apparently. I know we cant expect it to be just like the comics, and I don't, but that ending kind of soured the otherwise fine experience for me. If there were a 4th film to remedy that, which there wont be...that'd be one thing. But man. I think that's what really set Harry off. Still a good movie though.

you are the don't even know what a contrail is. You said "what you see as contrails is actually supposed to be the pressure wave in front of Superman - the air is compressed in front of him as he moves too quickly for it to simply flow around him." That's not what EVERYONE is talking about. We are talking about the trail of white smoke behind him. That is a CONTRAIL. Google it when you aren't busy wanking it to physics books (like you have ever opened one). And dumb shit like that does detract from the enjoyment of a movie. It's an unnecessary distraction.

The only kids who play superhero with a cape around their neck are the ones pretending to be Superman? First of DO realize that the world in the movie is NOT the same world we live in, right? This is a world where Superman doesnt yet exist (as he's a child...), but it by NO means should mean that there arent other caped heroes that the kids in his world might emulate. What, you honestly thought there were no comics before Superman? No other caped heroes? You've been alive I'm guessing 20 odd years at most - there's been a good half century before you were born where there was a PLETHORA of heroes in comics. Superman is merely the most famous example of that. I, for one, made up my OWN superheroes when I was a kid, put a cape around my neck, and pretended to be them, NOT superman. I drew more inspiration for mine from Batman, actually. Sure, they were stupid (one of them I called baraccuda or something) but i was 5. Superman didnt exist for me until I was a bit older - I'd known about Batman long before Superman. Just saying. Superman is the archetype, true, but plenty of us had different heroes we emulated. And plenty of them had capes.

People who gush over this trailer looking "different," "daring," "original," or "provocative" are the same full-of-shit indie hipster douchebags who thought Ang Lee's Hulk was a work of art. Jesus, this is supposed to be a superhero movie, not a fucking art-house flick. I want to believe a man can fly, not cry.

So Superman gives off exhaust now?...DUMB

    by nephilim138

and I'm guessing when he's hitchhiking, he can't fly yet. This teaser looks very michael bayish.

  • Yes, I'm quite well aware of what a contrail is. Clearly, you need some clarity on the matter, moron. No, you blasted twit, it was not "white smoke". It wasn't Super-exhaust. Contrails, as you clearly should google, are generally formed by the interaction between the exhaust of an aircraft and the vapor in the air. They can also be formed by the interaction of the wings of the craft with the atmosphere. That's not what we're seeing here. Clearly you failed to grasp that. What Snyder has clearly gone for is illustrating the vast speed at which he's flying and the enormous amount of pressure being generated by the compressing atmosphere in front of him and the expansion of it behind him. These are NOT contrails in the sense that people think of when they view an aircraft in the sky. Not even close. This is simply the disruption of clouds in the atmosphere, whispy as they may be, and the expulsion behind him as he goes. People are bitching about the warping effects of the atmosphere - it IS something that occurs. Anyone with any knowledge of the basic properties of physics and how gasses behave at great speeds would understand that. Maybe you should think before you speak. Your argument is basically "you're an idiot" Which only serves to illustrate how hopelessly ill equipped you are to even participate in an intellectual conversation. At least bring something relevant to the table, you petulant little shit. Fucking morons like you really shouldn't be allowed access to the internet. You also need a good curb stomping, but that's another story. Wannabe pseudo-intellectual kids. I swear.

Maybe if they used the main theme or even a recurring motif from LOTR then you'd have a point. But they didn't, so you don't. Don't tell me you believe more than half of people would recognize a random cut of incidental music from a John Williams score which isn't a major theme or motif either.

    Superman? Hitchhiking???

    by cgih8r

I like the feel of the trailer, but it's a Zack Snyder movie so look means nothing. Snyder's stuff is pretty shallow and that's exactly what I don't want to see. I want a film that does not have to rely on visuals to be engaging. I want a film that is smart and has something say. I find it kinda funny that they have two trailers with the same footage and different narration. The first one is good and the second one just comes off pretentious. It's like they're saying, we could plaster any soft words of inspiration on the screen with this music and it wouldn't matter. Also not a fan of the shaky zoom they always do with flying objects nowadays shoving the image in our faces. I say just stay zoomed out and make a real looking / beautifle shot. Thanks for the post Harry!

    by WeylandYutani

They are not a "trail of white smoke." Contrails are caused by 'condensation trails' of water vapor which can be triggered when an object passes through the atmosphere at high velocity. In this video, notice the water vapor that condescends on this F22s wing tips at 1:23? That is not smoke or exhaust, but a naturally occurring phenomenon: Some jet demonstration teams do release white or coloured smoke while doing shows so that the audience has an easier time spotting them at a distance, but that is different and that is not what is being portrayed in this teaser. Here, Superman is traveling at travelling at transonic speed and the air pressure building on the tips of his boots or perhaps the tips of his cape is supposedly causing water vapor condensation. No smoke. wcolbert is more correct than you realise

I still hope that the score contains winks and nods to Williams' score.

    by Royston Lodge

The scores for Nolan's Batman flicks include nods to Elfman's themes without copying them too obviously. There's no reason they can't do something similar for Man of Steel. Give it a score that merely reminds fanboys of Williams themes without being too derivative.

    by MR. MURDOCH

You guys are so funny...the only "production still" that Warner Bros. has officially released has been Superman crashing into the bank vault...which may not even be an actual 'shot' in the film...although if you've seen the Comic-Con trailer, you know it's definitely a "moment" in there... All of the other so-called "production stills" have been candid shots of the set from onlookers/paparazzi...which means it will likely look nothing like when you see these images in the final film...if they are even there. Williams? Legacy musician, but using his music here would instantly attach this film in memory and criticism against the previous series...but what the hell, they left such a large mark that you're doing it anyway, so Warner Bros. has rightly assumed "These fuckers are going to complain anyway, let's just do what we want." Or rather..."Let's let NOLAN do what he wants...after all nothing else has worked!" You need to chill and be patient, we're one year out...remember when you used to go to theaters seeing a teaser for a film months ahead of time (very rarely a year) and not knowing anything about it beforehand? That's one attempt at what this teaser's generating for the general audience..."Superman Begins...and we'll make sure we get it right this time." How can you not be excited with the inclusion of Costner, Lane, Crowe, Shannon, Fishburne, and even Adams? Those of you who saw the Comic Con trailer KNOW Warners has got some good stuff coming!

  • ...can't really decide whether that'd be really cool, or unbelievably stupid until I see it with my own eyes.

    Trailers are reassuring

    by supermans_red_underpants

The biggest concern I have is whether the tone of the thing will be true to Superman, and from these trailers, especially the voiceovers, it seems that they are spot on. Everything else (Contrails?? Capes??? Really?) is stupid nitpicking. Except he really should have red underpants. That's important. I think Superman should above all else be a symbol of hope, and we could use that these days. If they nail that people will respond. Glad so many of you haters here won't be in front of me in line next summer.

You dang kids need to read your comics...

    by Composite_Beppo

To the person who wants to know why Clark is wearing a coat, same reason he wears clothes - to fit in - sure, he could walk around naked and not succumb to the elements, but he just might stand out - same for working in a trawler in winter with just a tee shirt... This is a fellow who doesn't want to stand out, just wants to have a normal life and be left alone... And if you think that isn't true to the legend and mythos of Superman, you haven't read many comics - they were doing stories back in the 60's where he felt alone, alienated, alien - and those stories continue today... And why are so many so anxious for this to tank? Are you tired of superheroes? Fine, go watch something else and get out of our way - your kneejerk pessimism and cynicism were boring years ago.

I had to erase my post because of your perfect explanation. This looks like the superman I always wanted. Much like Millers Dark Knight Returns is my favorite Batman story.

  • So it's very encouraging to see a teaser that's shooting for lyrical, pastoral and a little bit sad. I also liked the differences in "script" - Jonathan Kent's monologue being a little more understanding and even fearful, with Jor-El sounding a bit more commanding and authoritative. They can go a lot of different ways with those characterizations, but it sounds like they are paying some attention to the different perspectives of Superman's parents. That said, those are poorly cut trailers. I love Superman, and I'm eagerly anticipating this movie. The payoff there did nothing for me. No chills, no goosepimples, no excitement. Very much in contrast to the excellent SUPERMAN RETURNS trailer. But that doesn't mean anything, as I doubt anybody involved in making MAN OF STEEL had serious input into those teasers.

    Some Very Short-Sighted People Here...

    by Aquanaut

The negative reactions display such in-the-box thinking and limited vision. Fishing has been around for 40,000 years before The Greatest Catch. Are so many of you incapable of considering WHY Clark might be hitch-hiking or performing blue collar work? …what implications these actions make toward some of the primary themes of Superman? And the kid with the cape? Who says that’s Clark? And if it is…who says a fictional character that inspired him didn’t wear a cape? This teaser was meant to establish the HEART of the character. And as a Superman fan, they did a damn good job of it. Superman ripping open his shirt and punching people? That’s not his heart, that’s Superman at the brink…and you know damn well that will be coming in later trailers. I’ll take contemplative “artsy” style over ham-handed action schlock any day of the week. With Snyder at the helm, I was truly nervous we’d be getting the latter, but he came through. And people calling this “dark” have extremely limited vocabularies. It’s classy, it’s solemn, and it draws from sublime pathos, but it’s not dark. It was great because it was so unexpected. They’re giving us a slow build and focusing on the MAN before they give us the SUPER. Don’t worry…they’ll be plenty of punching later…though, anyone that understands Superman knows that isn’t the heart of the character.

    by Volstaff

I duno about the teaser going for Terrence Malik, I really thought it looked like Snyder is going for a Alex Ross painting come to life kind of look. And I kind of liked it. This movie has to remove itself from Donner's ( and Singer's "tribute" hack job) flick to succeed. Also, I don't really expect to see the images of the kid running around in the red bathtowel in the actual movie. I think maybe it was Snyder trying to show what kind of feel he's going for in this teaser. I think it's going to make a lot of Supes fans happy. My older brother was a huge Superman comics fan, and I think he would have loved it.

    by brobdingnag

Only Begins was a decent superhero film of the Dark Knight trilogy and Rises, which I saw last night was a DISASTER. Three fucking films in and Nolan still can't direct a decent fight scene. You'd be better off calling this Knightfall and just have it be James Bond wearing a Tech Suit with bat-ears that Q gives him. Of the two Snyder has done the better superhero flick. Watchmen (even without the squid) was better than all three of these.

If you go back to Blade, the vast majority of superhero movies haven't just been good, they've been the backbone of a new generation of comic movies. Yeah, there are some less watchable ones and there are some downright terrible ones (Batman and Robin, Elektra and more recently Spirit of Vengence), but are we really going to whine about the little things when we are seeing some of the ideas that we never thought would make it to film, being aggressively sought after? I'm excited for this movie. I think it's time somebody added a non-Donner take on the character of Superman. I loved Watchmen and 300. Sucker Punch wasn't good, and I have too pride to watch his Owl movie. I think Snyder knows the stakes on this film and it will be a good one.

Common dude, the clip of score is not really "iconically Fellowship." If you were to play that portion of Bridge Of Khazad Dum to people standing on line at a movie theatre, few, if any could identify it. If you played it from the top of the track, which has the 'Fellowship' theme, then yes, most likely people would get it, but not the bit selected for the MoS trailer. I am absolutly no a fan of this director, but trailers often use temp music lifted from other films all the time: Glory, Gladiator, Thin Red Line, Hoffa, Requiem for a Dream... often show up in entirely unrelated ads. The list is endless and it is not unusual in the industry. If you're gonna hate, at least put in some effort.

  • They should have just gotten Howard Shore to score this movie.

Also, Why does every superhero film need a 'theme?'

    by AidanJames

Shit that worked in the 70's shouldn't just be kept around just 'because' you know. Look at Disco. I'd rather a composer build a piece of music around a scene rather than shit around trying to make a single piece of music he can repeat endlessly whenever something 'cool' happens.

    hate to be a hater

    by Funis4assholes

but really? A big part of me watched The Dark Knight Rises thinking 'Let it be over'. We needed angsty Batman, but we don't need this. The music is glaringly unfitting, and the same trite aspirational father-figure dialogue comes spilling out again. It looks like a more authentic Batman ripoff than Spider-Man was, for obvious reason, but the Nolan era has come and gone. This will not compete with the Marvel stable. Iron Man 3 will own this.

I don't think I even read it yet. I've been busy lately and have a few talkback tabs open. I agree, the LOTR music is *excellent* and works completely in this teaser. My comment was directed toward anyone complaining about the use of the music, as if teasers should always have original tune in them. No worries, dude. You're one of the few guys I respect around here =).

I think this novel approach to Superman could work really well. The teaser gives me a better idea of the tone they are going for, and I like it. It looks like it is going to be a more serious and realistic movie, but I don’t get the sense that Superman is going to be some kind of anti-hero or anything like that. It’s just a teaser of course, but so far so good in my opinion.

Why there is footage of Kent as a longshoreman/fisherman...

    by WeylandYutani

You have to put him in jeopardy where he either saves others and it appears to others that he risked his own life, or everyone except him dies so that Kent makes the choice to never let that happen again. Working on fishing boats is very dangerous and every year people die. SPOILER There are pics of Cavill getting off an orange Coast Guard Seahawk helo. So, it is likely Kent experiences a tragedy that leads him to accept his alter ego. It could work if Snyder can stay away from the ramping frame rate bullshit.

  • July 21, 2012, 9:54 p.m. CST

This is meant to *surprise* the audience, guys.

    by D.Vader

Not give everything away. You guys who are complaining are missing the intent of the teaser, I believe. First things first, a teaser is supposed to *announce* the existence of an upcoming movie and give a brief glimpse of what it may be like. Secondly, we're movie geeks. We know about this. We KNOW its Man of Steel, so we go in expecting to see some Superman action. We didn't get it. Why? Bc this teaser wasn't meant for US. Its meant for everyone else. The rest of the world. Normal people. The kind of people who see this teaser in the theater and think its going to be a dramatic film about a loner, traveling around the world, working on fishing boats and finding his place... ... only to have the rug pulled out from under them with the surprise money shot at the end. "Holy shit, its Superman! Another Superman!!!" While the rest of you are like "Not enough Superman!"

The quietness really built up the simple importance of the character. A big action teaser would have fell flat IMO. They're building up Superman as a big deal. Less is more in that situation. The young Clark doing his "Superman" pose with his head chopped off the camera is meant to get the audience to put their own heads or the heads of their children in that scenario selling the idea that, once upon a time, Clark Kent was just a a kid who wanted to be a hero too. It gets across the iconic nature of the character while bringing him down to Earth at the same time. It works. Also, I don't care where that music comes from, it really rocks in this trailer. I'm now JACKED for MOS and I wan't before. Job well done.

What these trailers got right -- and what Mark Waid got wrong.

    by Greggers

These trailers seem to be re-articulating some of the most important thematic and emotional beats from SUPERMAN THE MOVIE: Jor-El and Jonathan Kent explaining Superman's moral imperative. Its a special, idealized version of the father/son dynamic, Fathers shaping their son into men. It's something that I don't think that we see a lot of today, at least unironically. This has become a very important part of the Superman mythos, and I would argue that it was initially only realized in Donner's film. Some of it carried over into the better aspects of SMALLVILLE; you can definietly see it in Geoff Johns' run; and, of course, it plays a big role in a particuar issue of Grant Morrision's sublime ALL-STAR SUPERMAN. I'm glad to see how it seems to be shaping up here. Mark Waid, in his Superman magnum opus BIRTHRIGHT left out this tack completely. Rather having Pa Kent be a source of moral inspiration, he was (in one particular issue anyway) a petulant antagonist; something for Clark to rebel against. This was one of the biggest reasons why, for me, BIRTHRIGHT -- what in many ways seems like a blueprint for a cinematic Superman from the world's preeminent Superman expert - was such a monumental disappointment.

  • Vigorously (and futilely) trying to pound it all away every time a new comment pops up. I feel like I'm noticing it a lot more on this particular TalkBack than usual, probably because people here automatically give a shit about Superman and care whether other people like him or not. I come down on the positive side of this teaser (albeit with several criticisms), but considering how little there is to go on -- the tone of the footage, hell, even most of the footage itself, is probably not going to be in the movie -- it seems kind of silly to get so worked up about whether everybody else has embraced its impending greatness. But not as silly as arguing about red capes and contrails, at least. I like the Pa Kent version better than the Jor-El version.

The fact that Kevin Costner has had to endure popular scorn for mass sections throughout his career simply because he made enemies in Hollywood and the press for darring to care too much about the integrity of his work, is an outright scandal as far as I'm concerned. So what if he rubbed smart-asses the wrong way, went over budget and took his fate into his own hands? At least Costner is his own man, and that man is great! So glad the time of dismissing Costner is at an end. Russell Crowe's no sloutch either.

  • His main point is that he's going to change the world. If Clark's character is bad, and he's going to change the world, we're all pretty fucked then aren't we? Thus, I'd prefer that Pa lean a little more heavily towards the "good character" side in his messaging.

Well, here we go again; rabid fans getting up in arms over a....teaser! It's a teaser!! It's supposed to tease and not be an actual trailer giving you an at length description of the film it's teasing. None of you bitching about this teaser even know the context in which the scenes shown were meant to be. At we get get closer we'll be shown more. It's okay folks! But for now, would you haters please do all of us regular three-dimensional thinkers (making you two-dimensional thinkers) a favor and just: SHHHHHHHH!

Man of Steel trailer with the PROPER score

    by googamooga

  • July 22, 2012, 12:32 a.m. CST

Love the Terrence Malick-y trailer. You'd never guess that was Snyder.

    by Queefer Sutherland

But no matter what, half the people here or more will express extreme hate. Here's an intelligent assessment of his films: Dawn of the Dead was a good zombie movie. One of the better ones. But zombie movies do not impress me. Still, wow, those were some great zombies. Yawn. 300 was cinematically unique in its style. Very striking but very artificial. There's no way to get emotionally involved in it. It's a pretty ridiculous film, really. At least, that's how I felt. So when I heard he was doing Watchmen, I should have been alarmed, but I wasn't. I knew that Snyder wasn't going to write it. 300 proved he couldn't write, but his style was really striking to me, so I was hopeful about Watchmen. It's an extremely complex and difficult thing to translate to just a movie. It should have been a miniseries. It still could. That being said, I thought they did a great job adapting it, and changed the end for the better. The style was lush, with a gorgeous muted color palette, and a dense, rewarding story. It was extremely original. I loved it. I own the version that lasts forever, and I love it. So there. Unfortunately, Snyder went back to writing with Sucker Punch. The story, was stupid, absolutely wretched, but the girls were all extremely gorgeous and were a joy to behold, as were the visuals, but there was nothing subtle or intelligent about it. It's not a film, it's a fap. Turn off your mind and enjoy the scenery and it serves a basic purpose. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole was directed by Snyder? What the fuck? Anyway, it looks like he's actually taking a less artificial approach to Superman, maybe relying less on CGI? That's just an assumption based on the trailer. But just like with Watchmen, Snyder isn't the writer and is just left with directing. And since I feel that Superman needed a radically different approach, Snyder's one who can certainly do it. It's time to leave Richard Donneresque Superman and do something different. I think they're saying that loud and clear in those teasers. I wasn't particularly impressed, but it didn't turn me off, either. I'm still hopeful. I'm sure many of you are not. I haven't read any responses yet, but I expect to see a lot of irrational hate. Wish I could see those Comic Con scenes, though. Stupid fucks.

    It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superfisherman!

    by Ricky Retardo

Strange fisherman from another planet who came to earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal fishermen. Superfisherman. Who can change the course of mighty rivers. Catch salmon with his bear hands. And, who disguised as Clark Kent, a daily shrimp boatman for a great metropolitan fishery, fights a never ending battle for fluke, swordfish and the American clam.

Oh, and they need to get away from John Williams, too.

    by Queefer Sutherland

Please go ahead and hold his score in high regard. But why would filmmakers want to use the same music when they want to take a different approach? It was used in Superman Returns. Isn't that enough for you? That whole fucking movie was less a film and more a Richard Donner tribute. I'm sorry, guys, it was awful. Aside from the airplane rescue, it was as thrilling as jerking off to your family photo album. I grew up with Donner's Superman. I loved it at the time. They did not age well. It's time to say goodbye and start over again. We don't want campy superheroes any more. Been there, done that.

  • Different strokes, I suppose...

  • July 22, 2012, 12:41 a.m. CST

ricky retardo, that was pretty funny

    by Queefer Sutherland

But I still liked it. Yeah, I was kind of surprised to see Malickesque scenes from The Deadliest Catch. Still, it makes me really wonder what they're going for, and makes me interested. Which is what a teaser wants to do. It's very successful to me. But your take on it is really funny.

    by Queefer Sutherland

We haven't been given enough information to know. We can assume the best or worst from it, and the choice people make says a lot about their character.

  • How can you judge an entire 2 hour plus movie on a few seconds of footage taken out of context? Example: The kid with the cape. WHO IS HE EMULATING IF HE IS SUPERMAN!? Who the fuck said the kid WAS Superman? How do we not know that's not the final shot of the fucking movie? Jesus. I love you guys...but calm the hell down. I know it's asking a lot, but how about we judge the flick AFTER we've seen it?

  • What a choad.

    greggers, good analysis

    by Queefer Sutherland

Glenn Ford in Superman was exceptional. He was was very vulnerable, but full of good intentions and love for his adopted son. John Schneider, in contrast, looked like he could have played Superman himself. It was TOO television, if you know what I mean. Superman 90210. I, too, welcome the return of the dynamic of which you speak.

  • Dirty pool, Warner Bros.

  • Contrails? "why is that kid wearing a cape"? The f**cking music (that no one else but you angry nerds even recognized or noticed)? Terrance Malick (whoever the Hell that is). And my favorite: "It isn't coming out for a YEAR!". Some of you are actually complaining about the release date. Think about that for a second. Bitching and moaning about when a movie will be in theaters. Jesus Christ. It's a super short teaser trailer that shows barely anything for a movie that isn't coming out for a year and yet most all of you nerds have already made up your minds about how terrible of a movie it is. You are all like children who won't try a new food and simply say "I don't like it" without even tasting it.

I hope we can get a little fun in this movie. Or maybe you just feel like condemning. That's what it looks like. To me, it looks like a flaw in your critical thinking. That's different than being critical, you know? if you're going to be critical, I'll be more impressed if you can back it up with something more than emotion. If NOBODY had ever worn a cape and acted heroically in movies, THEN you would have a good argument. But you don't.

    by BizarroJerry

Yeah, he should be. Everything need not be cynical and post-modern or whatever. Remember The Avengers embracing Captain America being old fashioned? Superman needs some of that. For all its faults, Smallville at least focused on Clark as being a little bit of a throw back, dedicated to justice, etc.

    by Queefer Sutherland

You're assuming Superman isn't concerned with justice? After hearing both of his father's talking to him? There's more evidence OF it than against it in those trailers. But this IS Zach Snycer and Christopher Nolan, so you're probably going to get something quite a bit more serious. And having had plenty of films that were campy in varying degrees, I'm looking forward to something more serious. With that tone there's the possibility of making a more profound statement, which is something Superman has never done for me in films yet. But then it might be a turd of a film, too. We'll see. I'm remaining hopeful for now.

Ideally I want a cinematic Superman to be a mixture of...

    by The_Genteel_Gentile

Frank Capra, Victor Flemming, William Wyler, Anthony Mann, Howard Hawks, Michael Curtiz, Steven Spielberg, Terrence Malick, Oliver Stone, Frank Darabont, Ron Howard, Robert Zemeckis, Joe Johnston, Sam Mendes and Michael Bay (YES, I said Michael Bay! - Just look at the opening childhood scene and the attack aftermath scenes in Pearl Harbor, or the montage of people awaiting the end of the world in Armageddon!). Basically it ought to have been Spielberg because he's pretty much the culminated amalgamation of all that! I feel Donner's 1978 verson of Superman did some things absolutely right such as Smallville as idealized Americana. Christopher Reeves' portrait of Clark Kent/Superman as bumbling Cary Grant meets the stoicism of Gregory Peck with the purity of Gary Cooper. And of course John Williams iconic score. That was all dead on perfect! But much of the Metropolis portions and the stakes of the villianous threat were far too broad and hammy unfortunately. The Smallville sections should feel warm, languid and romantic with wide open expanses and sparse dialogue (a lot of careful still compositons and slow crane shots on wide lenses). It seems appropriate to depict the wondering period of Clark discovering himself with intimate handheld photography and music over silence. Juxtaposed with Metropolis, which should be cold and crackle with constant motion and busyness while everyone speaks rat-a-tat over one another in controlled chaos (a lot of steadycam and continuous linear tracking shots through densely populated forground players on long lenses). The action should be ultra kinetic with a clear sense of geography, gravity and weight utilizing realistically smooth semi-subjective shots of vitality and wide objective shots of grandeur. The threat should feel ominous and world shattering (with the camerawork echoing the somber magnatude of the stakes by mixing objective etherealness with subjective intimacy in deliberate and poetically fluid slow motion montages). Anamorphic 35mm and/or spherical 70mm would be my weapons of choice cinematographically. The musical score should have a clear sense of purpose, wonder, Copland-esqe Americana and majesty with lots of strings and brass, keeping percussion to a minimum. -- So, in other words, keep the entire aesthetic pretty classic and don't try rewriting the damn playbook with gimmickry (3D, unharnessed CG and shakycam cheats)! Fortunately is appears Snyder is capturing at least some of the fantasy cocktail for Superman that I would hope to see!

    Q Sutherland...

    by BizarroJerry

I'm not saying that trailer suggests that Supes won't be like that. And I was just trying to conjure up the "truth justice and the American way" kind of idealistic Superman, and just hoping that movie makers don't assume viewers are to cynical for that. And I'm not suggesting any jingoistic patriotism theme, either.

  • July 22, 2012, 1:44 a.m. CST

@greggers - I don't think Pa Kent sounds ambivalent, but assured

    by The_Genteel_Gentile

Assured that he has instilled the proper values and speaking with clear and gentle optimism. But then again Costner could read a resturant menu and make me think he's actually teaching a lesson on ethics and civility! His voice just has such a kind of masculine tenderness and moral ernestness to it.

I didn't think that you were, but I wasn't quite sure. Tone is impossible to convey here. I don't disagree with you. I hope that it can embody some idealism/optimism. I have no doubt it can be done without being silly or campy. Let's hope the filmmakers believe that, too.

    For all the haters...

    by Wackyal123

    1) Directed by Snyder, PRODUCED by Nolan... Do you really think that Nolan would have chosen Snyder to direct if he'd thought that Snyder would do a bad job? Nolan will reel him in if he thinks the movie is going out of shape! 2) The film is written by David S. Goyer and Chris Nolan... thus, will have a real world feel, not to mention, most likely a Batman Begins type script. 3) It's a re-imagining. Just because the first teaser isn't all trumpets, bells and whistles, doesn't mean it's going to be an action-less Malick movie. It means that, like Batman, Nolan doesn't want anything given away and Snyder likely agrees 4) Look at the stellar cast. You will see that each cast member has been chosen for a reason. I.e. J.Kent - Kevin Costner, because he is good as the midwest farmboy type, Russell Crowe as Jor-El... nuff said. 5) Clark Kent now works on a Trawler?... WHY NOT? I'm sure we've all had many jobs. And when you've got super powers, surely you'd want to find the most inconspicuous job. (Perhaps Trawler hand isn't the best for that... flipping fish over boats and shit) 6) Isn't it better that a teaser... TEASES rather than gives everything away? At the end of the day, everyone still has a hard on for a 35 year old movie and should get over it! Supeman the Movie was a great, iconic piece of film making, but ultimately, Superman is in dire need of a reboot as we saw a brooding/stalking superman in the last movie who didn't really stand up to the challenge. Hopefully, providing Luthor plays no part in it, this movie will put Supes back on his pedastal, and reinvigorate with some much needed, "Holy shit, I'm the last person of an entire race!"

    @wackyal123 - agreed.

    by The_Genteel_Gentile

Nolan and Snyder are obviously keeping everything close to their vest for now. But I'm certainly optimistic!

  • ...this is striking EXACTLY the wrong tone for Superman, ESPECIALLY in the wake of the downbeat Superman Returns, which did very well financially but we all know it blew anyway. Just based on this teaser and before it explicitly becomes a trailer for the next Superman movie, it looks interesting and intriguing. It does what a teaser should, whetting the appetite for what's to come. But as applied to the next Superman movie, it's clear that yet again they've missed the correct tone for Supes *completely*. Superman is not a dark hero, not dour or downbeat. He doesn't have to be a boy scout, either. That's a rap put on him by folks that can't deal with so powerful a character also being someone of GOOD character. Someone who despite near-godlike power remains moral enough to do right by others. We should ALL be so "boy scout," even without superpowers. Superman is the ultimate aspirational character, and by the way, the quintessential American. Think of it: who in reality or fiction has come a further distance and under more dire circumstances to this country to make good, and has done so in such a spectacular fashion? He is the hope of all of us to be better people, the example by which we should live our lives. And anyone who doubts that you can create such a character AND have him be the lead in a compelling movie needs to rewatch Donner's Superman movie. They cracked the nut of Superman perfectly, and not only did they make you believe a man could fly, they didn't shy away from bright primary colors and the red trunks! As I said, can't say *for sure* this new crew hasn't any more clue about how to do a great Superman movie than the last one just by this teaser. But just on the basis of the tone they're setting, my already pessimistic outlook on this effort has only gotten more so.

  • July 22, 2012, 2:11 a.m. CST

But why would a man that can fly ever need to hitchhike?

    by The_Genteel_Gentile

  • I just don't see that Snyder will totally drop the ball on this unless the script is just pathetic and he can't salvage it from that. At the very least, it will have some kickass Superman action and that will go a long way.

    Interesting mix of vibes

    by Dreamfasting

LotR music, sort of a Star Trek reboot vibe to the narration, namedropping ... it's hitting all the right buttons. The swing and the butterfly is a brutally painful image ... a wonderful synopsis of how fragile humanity will be in the face of his strength, how easy it would be for him to cause devistation just in accidental collateral damage. However, the contrails ... um ... those are normally caused by the gases expelled from the plane's engines condensing. What exactly is this trailer telling us about how this version of superman propels himself?

  • Seems like that could make his goodness all the more poignant, because it's not necessarily inherent but rather out of sheer force of will. He chooses the right and noble path because of his conviction in the values of his fathers. His belief in them and their values is one and the same. But true convictions and ideals can take a little time initially before they fully take hold because values really are something acquired and honed through trials and experience. There has to be a period of doubt, when he struggles with his position in the world and ultimately finds his purpose. All drama is conflict afterall. Don't you think?

  • and his velocity is causing the atmosphere to swell and trail behind him. I'm no expert though.

  • I guarentee you know on the subject than I.

This should answer your question about the contrails... I think this is what Snyder et al are trying to illustrate: They are trying to make Superman look fast and agile as he flies and they have taken visual cues from fighter jets moving at high velocity.

...for trying to bring some sense to this senseless forum. It's remarkable how people cannot think for themselves. It's remarkable how so many so-called film fans have no clue about the modern film experience. I don't care about those who don't like this, or any other, trailer. We like what we like. But holy shit....the show of cinematic ignorance is astounding. That said. I personally loved this teaser. Love the tone. Love the look. Love the character. It says so much about Kal El in just a few brief moments. His struggle to come to terms with his power and the isolation it creates. Look on the bright side folks. We' get to see I 2.5 hours what Smallville took 10 YEARS to show us. :-) And without all the cheese in between the meat. :-)

This film is 11 months from release. Hans Zimmer has not even begun scoring the film yet. Teasers and trailers ALWAYS borrow existing music!!!! It's just how it works. The film makers will choose a piece of music they feel will convey the tone they are looking for. Superman Returns used The Wilkiams pie e in it's teaser be aide it was made in the Donnor-verse Superman realm. This is a total redux. We can see even in Snyders color palette, along with this brilliant choice of music, that Clark is struggling with finding his place. I admit I was skeptical before. But this 1 minute + of MoS has me hooked. WB marketing department: 1 Ignorant whiney fanboys: 0

  • That film had great imagery, great Zimmer soundtrack. Cavaziel seemed a perfect lead for that type of film, great support cast, and the philosophical symbolic story fitted the film elements perfectly for this distinctive style. I saw badlands i think it was, one of his fetted older films and didn't really like it much. So i havn't watched anymore of his films, as TRL is special film to me, and i can't imagine any other films in this distinctive style, while being good, being as good as The Thin Red Line. Humbug!

I'm wary about the longshoreman aspect of the story, but overall I am pleased and intrigued by the realistic, handheld camera feel of this. This may not be in the same universe as The Dark Knight, but it certainly comes from a similar viewpoint and attitude. This is now in my most anticipated movies of 2013.

Interesting Trailers - Low Key and Visually interesting

    by cushing1967

As always, in the talkbacks we have the usual litany of illogical complaints. Clark Kent working on a fishing boat? Why would he do that? That's stupid? Yeah, because Clark Kent has never, ever worked in a job in the history of the character - oh, wait, he has been a reporter hasn't he? Clark Kent hitching? Why would he do that he can run very fast or fly? Yeah, because Clark Kent has never, ever used a non super means of transport in the history of the character - um - oh, he probably has - quite often. Clark Kent wearing a coat while fishing? Sigh The style is different from the style that we had geared ourselves up to hate - how dare he? And so on and so forth repeat until the rapture! Or the Armageddon of your choosing.

    by WeylandYutani

It may not be, but my guess is that the boy is Clark for 3 reasons: 1. We know that there are two boys cast to play young Kent at different ages, so the filmmakers are telling that story. 2. Admittedly, trailers take shots out of order and context, but this teaser is very Clark-centric and touches on how he grew up to become Superman. The cape is foreshadowing this. 3. The dog is a visual cue. In film grammar, the hero often identifies with children and/or animals and the hero is often the subject of their gaze. Before we know anything about a character, we are tipped off that they are good or evil by the way children and animals interact with them. It is an old technique that goes back to the earliest days of film. Anyway, we see what looks to be the same dog in shots with the older Clark on the dock and the child playing in the field. The presence of the dog in both shots suggest the boy and man are the same individual. If it is the young Clark, he is obviously not playing 'Superman' as we did as children. But As he fantasizes and plays, he is developing his alter ego at that moment – unconsciously. He may be remembering his short time on Krypton as an infant, even if he is not fully aware of it... He may be acting out what he thinks is a recurring dream if he does not know his true origin at that point in the story. Regardless, the two actors in this teaser are probably the same person at different ages.

    by WeylandYutani

Kent may not know that he can fly yet. We have no idea when and what abilities he has and at what age. It will be interesting to see how this version of the Superman origin plays this story arch. Conversely, Clark may be trying to burry his true nature and fit in to human society as best he can. This also might be a nod to Donner's film. I believe they hit the same narrative beat when Clarke left the farm and headed north... I am pretty sure there is a shot of Jeff East, as a young Clark, trying to thumb a ride from a truck hauling freight.

the moment where the kid puts his fists to the sides of his waist

    by who cares

the moment where the kid puts his fists to the sides of his waist i get the chills... right before the screen fades to black... that moment is SUPERMAN foreshadowing... i have to agree with others that the flying scene in the end may not have been the best choice... i noticed that in the comic con trailer the details were handled a lot better... like the first shot of superman in the cape from a distance...that would have made this teaser more effective.. but anyway.. we get what we get also... the music from the comic con footage made more sense to me.. anyway both trailers are ok... fingers crossed more of these pop up in the coming months

    the malick influence

    by j_difool

the funniest thing about many people seeing the Malick influence on this trailer is that it shows "Malick" has become just another brand to be knocked-off. maybe people will stop taking him so fucking seriously now, and see that his movies are mostly aesthetic fluff. i actually thought this felt like a sentimental capital one bank commercial or something. some "heartfelt" advertising for a company or product dreamed up by a modern-day Don Draper.

    looks good

    by VoiceOfSaruman

At least the trailer looks good to me. I'm not sold on Snyder cause I've never loved any of his films beyond his fun visual style. But this trailer gives me hope. There's nothing in this trailer that makes me think they are headed in the wrong direction, or anything that doesn't make sense to me. The boy with the cape? Nothing to gripe about. If it's young Clark, well...he had to get the idea for it later from somewhere right? It's like having him draw on a S on his chest as a kid. If you think it doesn't make sense back then, then how does it make sense later for you? I think the fishing boat angle is great. The Birthright series might not be canon (or maybe it is at this point, I don't know) but mixing up and fleshing out parts of his backstory doesn't kill the character by definition. Yeah, I'm thinking of a certain great origin story told about another, darker, super hero in recent times. I think it can work. If anything I've been more concerned about the look of the costume and the dark look of some of the posters than this trailer. It's a dark world we live in, I think Superman should exist in it. But it doesn't mean he needs to be super dark and brooding. This trailer doesn't suggest he will be, makes me happy.

    More to say...

    by Wackyal123

Just a few more "notes" to consider. 1) The score will be done by "Hans Zimmer" and his team. As we know, he is a master of Iconic themes. Ok, not John Williams Master, but Pirates of the Caribbean, Gladiator, BATMAN BEGINS/DK/DKR, Inception. It is worth noting that whilst Zimmer may also be known for his movie themes, he also wrote the intro theme for the inter-European gameshow "Going For Gold". Of course, if you want an example of how I believe his music should sound, just listen to the "Backdraft" soundtrack. Epic, sweeping strings with fanfare trumpets! 2) Why do people have a problem with Cavill? I'll tell you why... He isn't American! So what if the Man of Steel "should be" an all American Hero.... Nolan made the right choice for Batman and so Cavill will be the right choice here. Similarly Andrew Garfield IS Spiderman. Simple as. You should be proud that we Brits want to play your superheros. (As we don't have our own!) 3) Just based on the released "set photos", it appears as if there will be some kind of fight between the female villain and Supes, IN A SMALL TOWN. The more photos that are released, I'm thinking that this movie will be a new take on Superman 1, 2 and 3 minus Lex Luthor (hopefully). 4) Using the Williams theme would be awesome BUT... would also suck tremendously. Yes, it's Iconic, but it's also of its time. We need something new and fresh. I reckon this film is going to be uber different but pretty damn awesome. And with Nolan overseeing, it should set the franchise up well ready for a JLA movie or SvB. :)

Why hes hitchiking or wearing a coat...

    by troy

is because, from what i am lead to believe, is about Clark trying to find himself and his place in the world. He cant very well do that if he is flying around or running around on a crabbing ship bare chested can he? He is trying to be as human as possible, even though he knows he can do all these different things to make his life easier, to become that person. Makes no sense to gripe about wearing a jacket or hitching a ride just because you think it doesnt make sense because hes superhuman and shouldnt have to do those things.

But anyone that denies Watchmen as a masterpiece, especially in terms of dialogue compared to the comic, is an idiot. Compare the scene with Sally Jupiter and her, what a mess in the comic. In the movie, it was incredible. As for 300, the only thing that was mind-boggling there was the battle sequence in the beginning. The rest was okay. Snyder will make a great Superman because he has amazing producers keeping him in line.

You're a genius! If Snyder and Nolan had gone the other way and made it look like the standard comic book movie, you'd complain that they were simply copying the others and giving us nothing new. all snark aside

    by johndalf greymane

I love me some snark, but setting that aside... -I DO like the look of this so far, as long as its in measure and the new supes isnt an overall emo mess of a character. Seeing how a sentient entity who wants nothing more than to be a "man among men" deals with the reality of super powers sounds kinda cool. When its time for punching foes thru multiple building I just hope they get on with it. Supes is a dude of action. For the most part, I would think his doubts are aired in his quiet moments. -I hope the kid running around in the towel cape is not Kal-el. I hope its a kid pretending to be the Superman he becomes by the end of the movie. If it is Clark as a boy, pretending to be an invented comics superhero that just happens to do all the classic Superman poses/gestures, it would be a lame ploy to tug at the heartstrings of the audience's inner child... or whatever. It wouldnt make or break the movie for me, but it would jar a little, and a blatent lame ploy like that does not bode well when we are all trying to project the quality of the story/script with so little info. -If there is kryptonite in the film, please do not let it turn Supes into a pansy-ass limpdick. I swear to gawd, every freakin Superman movie has him turn into a useless crybaby when he loses his powers in any form. Is that the totality of his character? The source of his fortitude? Superpowers? I think not. The superpowers only affect the scale of his actions. My take of Supes is that hed be a dauntless nerd for justice, not cringing from a stand hes taken unless knocked the fuck out. He should never wimper, whine, or cower. Some basic hand-to-hand skills to fall back on in times of reduced omnipotence might do him some good as well. Im not a Superman lore dude... does he not have any martial training other than earth punching mightitude? Anyway, hope its good. Too bad DC doesnt have a master plan like Marvel, mass market tastes will likely recoil from superhero movies by the time they got their shit together.

I'm probably one of the biggest Terrence Malick fans around. I've seen 4 of his films in the theatre, I own every one of his films, and he is in my humble opinion the greatest filmmaker alive. I wasn't saying it looked exactly like a Malick film, I said it looked very Malickesque, there's a difference. And just so we're clear: I've seen... Badlands: 3-4 times Days of Heaven: 4 The Thin Red Line: Easily 50+ The New World: 6-7 Tree of Life: Thus far 8

  • ...combine the facts that a good majority of the twenty-something's and teenagers going to see movies now grew up in a America obsessed with romanticism and death, because of 9/11, two wars, Katrina, etc., and its not surprising movies like TRANSFORMERS and trailers like these are thought of as successes. A film like ARMAGEDDON gave off the same urgency and melodrama in 1998, but, it wasn't considered such an accurate depiction of life, particularly in America, that supporting and liking the movie became an almost ideology, like it has in many ways with movies like THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN or THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. We live in basically the same time as the 60's, only WE are not drafted and also have many more ways to isolate ourselves and stew in our own fears and opinions. This is why something like these trailers receive reactions such as crying; its not out of fandom but from a conditioning of constant melodrama and isolation. Thus, we have what is the equivalent of movies like TITANTIC and SAVING PRIVATE RYAN encased in comic book adaptations. Superman flying used to be a thrill... ...Now its like watching a jet take off from the ground behind a roped conclave. Tread lightly. For you tread on my dreams.

    by Royston Lodge

Donner's Superman was groundbreaking cinematic storytelling ... in 1978, and it's quality held up upon repeated viewings for decades. But time moves on, and today it looks as ridiculous to a first-time viewer as the George Reeves Superman looked to us. Same goes for Burton's Batman. It was a mind-bending achievement ... in 1989. Today, not so much. Give Donner credit. Thirty-four years ago, nobody had seen anything like Superman The Motion Picture.

  • It's true that the world knows Superman's origin, and we hardly need another movie to explain it to us. However... Most of the greatest, most emotional Superman stories are ABOUT his origin in one way or another. Examples: Any story involving Kandor is ABOUT his origin. Supes thought he was the last living Kryptonian, then he finds out there's an entire city of Kryptonians, and THEN he finds out they're living in captivity in a bottle. That's gotta fuck a guy up. Any story involving Zod is ABOUT his origin. Supes thought he was the last living Kryptonian, then he finds out three others survived, and THEN he finds out that they're Krypton's worst criminals. That's gotta fuck a guy up. The whole New Krypton storyline is ABOUT his origin. Kryptonian society reborn on a new planet, and it turns out not to be everything he hoped it would be. That's gotta fuck a guy up. A Superman movie that doesn't explore how this guy's background affect's his psychological and emotional well-being is missing a big opportunity. In fact, I thought that was one of the big mistakes about Superman Returns. Instead of cutting out the "Supes visits Krypton's graveyard" scene, they should have built the themes of the story around that emotional struggle, instead of focusing on Clark Kent's stupid crush on Lois Lane. I mean, think about it, if Supes had found what he was looking for when he travelled to Krypton, do you think he would have returned to Earth? I doubt it. The only reason he returns is because he has nowhere else to go. That's not much of a motivation for Earth's mightiest defender!

    @d.vader- Nice 'Heathers' reference...

    by ThulsaBoom

    ...made me happy.

  • Having experienced this teaser for the first time at the Batman movie, I experienced it as it was meant to be: you aren't really supposed to realize it's a Superman movie at all until the "money shot". When it got there, that's when some people in the theater started cheering.

  • Got it. You superior talkbackers have won. You are victorious. You win... something I guess? I must've wandered into a vat of toxic waste sometime during my miserable life. That explains why my brain is a dissolving mass of puss, and my body is a distorted volume of organic matter. I'll remember that then next time I am crossing the road. If only so that I don't get splattered all over the windshield of a superior citizen's motor vehicle, thus causing them to spend their hard earned dollars on a car wash.

  • No, he does not. Jonathan Kent taught him to hide his abilities and repress any violent impulses. Pa Kent taught him to be a big pussy and let bullies beat him up, lest he be unveiled as an alien freak. I've long thought that the story could easily be spiced up by injecting more friction between Clark and Jonathan Kent. I think Clark should resent Jonathan for holding him back from realizing his full potential, and make that a large part of the reason why he decides to put on the tights. Instead, Clark is always shown virtually worshiping Jonathan, but I don't buy it. What life lessons did Jonathan really teach Clark? Don't stand out. Don't excel. Just be happy farming wheat in Kansas. Alternately, when Jonathan is portrayed encouraging Clark's decision to become Superman, it makes even less sense. What lessons did Jonathan teach Clark that would help him in that regard? He raised the kid to be a farmer, not a crime-fighter. It's possible to argue that Jor-El's computerized ghost taught Supes the practical stuff he needs to become a crime-fighter, but that too makes no sense. Jor-El was no cop. He was no detective. He was no martial artist. Jor-El was a scientist from a pacifist society. Anything he teaches Supes about being a hero would have to come from the Kryptonian equivalent of Wikipedia. As such, Supes TOTALLY relies 100% on his powers. Without them, he has no skills to fall back on. Even his abilities as a journalist depend on his super-hearing and x-ray vision. Without his powers, he wouldn't be fit to write obituaries for The Smallville Tattler. I think that's a big reason why Batman doesn't really trust Supes.

    Thos looks like Hancock II

    by Hesiod2k7

  • The great big DC Comics logo at the beginning of the trailer pretty much ruins that argument. Even if you don't know it's Supes, at the very least you know it's gonna be a superhero movie. Looking at Henry Cavill on a fishing boat, I suppose one MIGHT guess that it's gonna be Aquaman... ;-) Regardless, I think it's a huge mistake to put the DC Comics or Marvel Comics logo in front of this sort of teaser. Putting the logo at the beginning immediately gives too much away. (Hell, even showing the Bad Robot logo gives too much away for JJ's teasers. You immediately know what's coming up.)

  • July 22, 2012, 1:37 p.m. CST

Watchmen didn't suck as a film.

    by Hesiod2k7

It is one of the best comic book movies ever made. But has a bad rep because of dipshit fanboys bitching about a giant squid. It's problem was that it was mostly not full of action. It was mostly character and exposition

  • I realize your post on this thread was a critique, not a "this sucks" post, so this comment isn't REALLY directed at you. Regardless, I think when people complain about haters, they're referring to the sort of folk who post knee-jerk "this fucking sucks" posts, rather than referring to the sort of folk who post thoughtful critiques. It's the people who post simple-minded complaints about contrails and winter jackets that stick in the craw.

  • July 22, 2012, 1:46 p.m. CST

hesiod2k7: I disagree. The problem was the altered ending.

    by Royston Lodge

You're right that the first 90% of the flick is one of the best comic book movies ever made. That's precisely WHY the ending is so infuriating. Snyder spent the first two hours getting almost everything exactly right, and then the last 30 minutes getting it really wrong. If it was the middle 30 minutes he'd gotten wrong, it would not have been nearly as aggravating. The problem is that the ending is the last thing you're thinking about when you leave the theatre, so getting it wrong means the fans are gonna obsess about it. If a filmmaker gets the beginning and the ending right, fans can generally forgive a weak middle. Watchmen failed on that count.

  • July 22, 2012, 2:14 p.m. CST

    @royston lodge; well he should

    by johndalf greymane

As an adult that has faced the loss of superpowers many times over, Supes should take the initiative and learn a little kung fu! :) Im sure Batman would spar with him with a little kryptonite in his pocket. I keep thinking of Reeves' Superman cowering from an aging trucker, or Routh's stagger and squirm after getting his ass handed to him by a cpl of Luthor's thugs. The movie's versions of Superman just seems to have cowered and whinged too often, I would want Supes to lurch to his feet, spitting blood and teeth, fists up, even while looking for a tactical retreat. Anyway. Hope the movie is good. I like good stories.

  • July 22, 2012, 2:23 p.m. CST

    Really -- Zod again?

    by John Fasano

With 70 plus years of stories, we're going to replay the donner films again? I appreciated Batman Bigins because he went with the Scarecrow and Ra's Best Superman beatdowns: by Bats in THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS by Captain Marvel in KINGDOM COME. Make either of those two movies with t he fidelity Zack showed 300 and WATCHMAN -- and I will go back to the scary movie theater.

  • Shit like that makes me feel olllld.

  • Under the influence of green Kryptonite, he can't simply say to himself, "maybe I can't fly, but I can still swing a punch or two," because he's too busy writhing on the floor in agony and exhaustion. Now, I can ALMOST see your point in Superman 2, since in that case he's not under the influence of Kryptonite, but rather he's simply de-powered. However, the way I remember that scene with the trucker, he did try to fight back, but he got his hat handed to him because the trucker was stronger. Remember, Donner's Superman never met Batman. Who's gonna train him in martial arts without discovering his secret? Could he have been a good martial arts student if he had to be on guard the whole time not to hit too hard? I say, any knowledge he has (at least in the Donnerverse) about martial arts would have to be gleaned from books, and nobody who tries to learn to fight from reading books becomes very proficient at it. I think the way the Donnerverse Superman reacts when depowered makes perfect sense. Now, if we're talking about the comic books version of Supes, then you might have a point, because he has the rest of the Justice League to give him tips. Even if Batman was too much of a prick to help Supes out, there's still Green Arrow. Supes never seemed like an egotist who can't ask his friends for a favour, so I could see it happening. Actually, I was thinking about something sorta similar the other day. I thought a neat idea for an alternate Earth Superman would be to do a series where he's limited to his 1939 powers, and use that limitation as one of the big factors leading to the formation of the Justice League. After all, modern-day Supes doesn't really NEED the Justice League. It takes a lot of effort to think up a crisis that Supes can't handle on his own, and he doesn't really need the Watchtower's surveillance technology, what with his omniscient superhearing and all. A version of Supes limited to the 1939 powers would have much more of a reason to team up with other heroes. Also, I think it would be a neat idea if he can only leap tall buildings rather than fly, but then once he meets Batman he gets Wayne to build him a high-tech cape that allows him to glide and change direction, and that explains why the ordinary people on the ground think Superman can fly, even though he strictly can't. In return, maybe Supes gives Wayne special access to some Kryptonian technology that allows Bats to invent better gadgets. In other words, explore more in depth how the members of the Justice League contribute to each other's abilities and personae.

I like it. Very similar to fleischer's style I'd say and Cavill looks more like the comic superman who doesn't actually look like Reeve although Reeve is still the ultimate superman no matter how you slice it. I dig the gritty macho ballsy supes from the comics myself which is what I think cavill's going to deliver more than the godlike boyscout of reeve's era. Thematically, I hope the film tackles superman's search for his own sense of righteousness amidst the complex perspectives on that issue, though not get all emo about it, woe is me, my life's so hard. We want our kids to turn out strong and confident and shit don't we... let superman be their hero again. If there's one thing I didn't like about Returns it's that they took supey and made him TOO flawed and human. Even if he didn't have all those powers, he'd run into a burning building and save people, he's that good a person... yeah...

Saying the first superman "sucked" was a bit harsh. It is a great film with a great score. But the reverence it receives is a bit over the top. I don't want to see a retread of that superman. I want a new take with new theme music. A superman for today that is plausible, one where I can suspend my disbelief. Making superman feel real and relevant is not "dark". If the villains are dark, then all the better because Supes intrinsic goodness with be contrasted and highlighted even more. Superman does not exist in the grey, he's not cynical. He's a force for good like Captain America.

@royston lodge; Supes clips. The difference is demeanor

    by johndalf greymane

this- and this- versus this- All the clips are a little poor, the animated clip really bad, but the difference in action/body language is there. Theres just a difference is demeanor. w/e. not trying to belabor the point. Reeves' Supes whimpers, Routh has the strength to cling to Luthor, crawl or stagger, but not the gumption to roll over and take the nut shots he can, trying to get a window of retreat. That shits kryptonite! Get away by all all means! Just take your cojones with you! I just prefer a Superman character with fortitude. I dont mind him harboring personal doubts (as seems to be depicted in the movie material released so far), just not to the point of weakening the character.

    by pixellandscape

Bit of a shame that. Your post above articulates why I am not so happy with the over emphasis this DC universe has on raw character searching and personal(HUMAN type truth) Supes is an Alien from another planet, who like Cap wears a ridiculous costume because he wants to be a symbol. A paragon for the world. If he is out in the Atlantic trawling for crab until a super villain threat comes along, then for me, that is a bit of a cop out. The old Villain makes the hero story which I think diminishes Supes. Also what I love about the Marvel world from the first Iron Man was no fear that the heroes were slightly kitsch but that Cap, Thor or anyone else slotting in seamlessly. Watching the teaser I just can't picture Supes standing with Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Aquaman or The Flash in the same world. Like it would be a bit embarrassing and not real...

  • What's with the messed up Superman Logo? Seriously! The "S" used to mean just that, the letter "S" as in SUPER and not some big ass Kryptonian backstory that we need to sit through for an hour before we get Superman doing anything Super! Jesus, just give us a Supes with the regular suit & "S" shield. What's with all the superheroes having the lizard skin textured suit? We all know the backstory just get to Superman doing incredible things that us mere mortals can't. That's why we pay to go see a Superman movie. Not for the history of Krypton or the Jesus analogy! SUPERMAN DOING SUPER ACTS!! That's what we want! Why doesn't Hollywood get this? Out of all the superheros, Superman is the most purest and the simplest at what he symbolizes. Making the world safe and doing super acts! Period! Yet this concept keeps getting screwed up! And finally, in closing, can someone tell me how the fuck does Superman shave?

    by Todd1700

I have been picking a little with my posts. But I can't see how in the hell anybody is excited by that teaser. First of all it's so generic that the first two thirds of it could have been about anything; a blue jeans commercial, a reality TV show, tampons, etc. After that totally generic opening we see a guy pull a basket over a boat rail, a boat and a guy hold his thumb up hitchhiking. The only Superman footage we get is a distant shot of him cut and pasted in place of a jet doing a vertical climb. Must have been a F-15 judging by the twin engone contrails. Maybe people from Krypton have two assholes so it's a twin fart trail. Now I'll grant it's a teaser trailer but what exactly excited anyone about that? Not to mention the Malick like look of it. I'm not the least afraid to admit that I hate that style of shit and hope like hell that teaser is an aboration and not the style the entire film is shot in. Nope, the mystery to me isn't the hate for this teaser. The mystery to me is why anyone would already have their tongue up this movies ass over that shitty clip.

The Superman I'd like to see...

    by DoctorWho?

I'd like to see them tame down the GOD-like powers.<p> No flying... just the infinite leaping ability like he had in the first comic years.<p> Sure bullets can't kill him...but can they at least slow him down a bit? I don't want to see Supes standing there, yawning with hands on hips while bullets bounce off of him. Or watching a bullet shatter of of his eyeball. Make it unpleasant for him at least. Like the Hulk.<p> And maybe lose the heat vision. If I remember correctly he's had the X-ray vision ability from the outset.

  • That's what we want! MAKE IT SO! Cut the EMO bullshit!

  • This has always been a limiting factor for my excitement with a lot of the Superman movies too. Superman is such an incredibly powerful super hero that ordinary human criminals are pretty boring to throw up against him, even Lex, (sorry). Basically their only avenue to harm him is the same old Kryptonite route that has been done to death. How many times can you watch ordinary criminals bounce bullets off him without yawning or checking your watch? With other super heros they are actually human. Spiderman could literally be injured or killed by any street thug with a gun. Of course they won't actually be allowed to kill the hero of the film but there is some risk in these encounters. There is only two ways to go with Superman to make his movies exciting as I see it. Either tone down his powers or seriously amp up the level of bad guys he's up against. They tried it with Superman II back in the day but the special effects needed to pull off such and epic battle with Zod and his partners just wasn't there.

Judging by the overly dramatic, dull dry tone of this early trailer this version of Supes is going to be epically YAWN inducing. That's my opinion as of right now and I truly HOPE that I am 100% wrong. I want an awesome Superman movie but holy Christ this does not look like it. Recycled LOTR music = Fail. Somber tone = Fail Complete lack of action or anything resembling this strange thing called -fun- that moviegoers enjoy - Fail Fishing boats and laundry blowing in the wind = Wannabe Indie Movie Imagery Fail The reason DC and WB are FUCKED is that if this movie bombs JL goes down the fucking toilet along with the FAILED GL movie. Looks like we're doomed to a zillion more Batman movies minus Nolan. AGAIN - I REALLY HOPE I'M WRONG

  • If you people think a director's fondness for the emotional subtly and lingering camerawork of Terrence Malick is a bad thing? Then you are all idiots. People complain about Ang Lee and Zack Snyder as though they were BAD comics directors... Well they may have meddled with your precious mythologies by making a change here...(What did John Byrne do? That motherfucker sure didn't shit on someone's bible) What they HAVE done was realize that the filmic potential of a comics film was greater than, say, what Chris Nolan has done, by utilizing split screen, slow motion, all those tricky things that help a viewer feel more like they're inside a page than celluloid. An indie approach and a slow bulid is appropriate for such a mythic character, as is "Deadliest Catch" (how many of you mindless parroting feebs have made that joke by now on this thread, I wonder) I would like to see more comic movies with Dick Tracy/ The Spirit style... If you haven't left the new Bats movie feeling like you've been cheated... well. Let Snyder put you inside the great man's tights and show you what a real jazzed up comics movie can be. The fact that he seems to be dropping a lot of his style-over-substance for this pic should raise CHEERS, really

  • July 22, 2012, 9:30 p.m. CST

Here's my reason to fear any WB superhero movie..

    by ColloquiallyBorn

    1) Most of their characters are not as fantastic as Marvel's. Ok they also bombed on Daredevil, FF4 1&2 and especially Elektra, but in all, DC is always second best unless you have Superman and Batman around. Look at Thor, if I thought one movie of Marvel would definitely bomb it was that one, but it impressed me to the point I was pleased to have seen it on the big screen first and not on Blu-ray. 2) Character re-inventing to hell; Chris Reeve's Superman was so good because they may have changed some stuff, but not too much. People could actually feel like they finally watching their comic book come to life. .. Let's not talk about why 3, 4 and 5 were just plain crap.. They went away from the source material and just plain blew it. Superman Returns went ballistic on the first weekend then dropped out of sight making a slight profit WORLDWIDE because it was f*cked up. Pervert Peeping Tom Superman; stupid way for Luthor to get rich by having an old bat sign on her death bed which would have been fought by the family in real life, Superkid and Lois being the biggest dead beat mom on the planet, Lois being 21 yr old yet already have a 8 yr old son, while Supe's been gone so that means Superman raped a young girl, Superman being stabbed by a small chunk of kryptonite, and fall like a loaf of bread, then being able to lift a freaking continent full of it because he was "energized" by the sun for 10 seconds.. the whole damn real estate again from Luthor EVEN IF HE IS NOW RICHER THAN HE EVER IMAGINED!.. The whole story line was raped sideways by a broomstick.. WB dropped ball with that one... While Nolan's Batman was changed in some ways, he didn't go way way off. The whole training gave purpose to the character, ect. Nolan didn't destroy the character by suddenly give him a peeping tom persona.. He followed it and slightly made it more contemporary. This is why I'm wondering what this Superman will bring. We see Clark on a boat.. Euh.. He's a farmer.. Hope this is just during his "learning of the world" bit and not a complete change about his roots. Some things you can change, ok the costume being kinda raped is one sign that this can be great or the worse piece of crap from WB, but it's not THE thing that will break this movie. If they start by making Krypton not blow up, then we have a problem... That's the whole reason why Superman stays on Earth.. He's an alien without a world. One storyline I loved was Byrne's take on Superman, The Man of Steel books. He changed Superman like no one even dared before him, but he finally made him "human". He had defaults, he wasn't totally invincible, there was a reason his clothes wouldn't just rip off him, even is flight had a reason of being, it wasn't that he just flew everywhere, he actually was able to think himself into doing it. He also ripped him of every super powers that were given to him over the years that was in the end just getting ridiculous. He limited him to the basic things that made him a Superman not a God. He also changed Krypton by making them different from us in the way they had children of acted with their skin touching air. It was to make the bridge between us and them. He also removed the S logo that makes Clark put it on his chest form the Kryptonians. Why the hell would an alien races have the same looking alphabet as us? Just ridiculous. This seems to have been placed back on Krypton, which makes me nervous on this take. I just hope they can make it as plausible as a Superhero movie can be. Hell, the new Spiderman movie went all "Ultimate" storyline on us, but it was just good enough to not make me think it was a crap fest. I was able to enjoy it... Let's hope Superman can do the same.. this time around..

I like the look of the clip, but why must we have a "realistic" Superman anyway? The whole concept is absurd. At least with The Avengers they had fun and played up the comic book aspect of the movie. This latest Batman pushed it too far when they introduced the "fusion" device as the clock for the script. When a magical technology is developed in secret to further a film plot, the script has gotten very flabby indeed.

    by Jubba

might be a kid that has seen superman on the news and is just playing around, pretending to be him. maybe it's seeing this kid that supes realises he's inspiring good. maybe it's used at the beginning of the story to show the effect supes will have before getting into how things get to that point. or maybe it's shown at the end to show us that not everyone thinks he's a bad guy or something. why must the kid be clark?

I, for one, would love a different mythos...

    by Melanie Griffiths Sour Patch

...tell me Clark Kent isn't a reporter for the Daily Planet and I'd be ecstatic. Seriously. We've seen these origins so many times now, I'd love to see a different way into Superman. I know that probably doesn't happen, but I'd be stoked if it were the case and be more than happy to go along for the ride. At first I laughed in Dark Knight seeing this trailer with Clark as a fisherman, but then after thinking about it I loved it. If/when they reboot Batman, they seriously should consider not making the next Batman Bruce Wayne & having him be someone completely different or someone Bruce handed the mantle to/trained. Can't believe we're already talking about rebooting Batman. Ugh.

    by Melanie Griffiths Sour Patch

Clark playing a little high school sports and kicking serious ass. I hated he was the waterboy in the Donner film. It'd be pretty cool to see him do things on an athletic field never seen before and then realize his advantages makes it unfair & rather than pursue fame & glory he chooses the nobler path.

    by Eli_Cash

Batman's shorts are pointless with the black bodyarmor suit. One could debate whether batman should be wearing body armor tho, but I think its a logical choice. With the colorful tights on superman he needs the shorts A) to break up the costume from simply being a field of blue, and B) to cover any unsightly bulges and keep it family friendly. This was not a convention invented by superman comics, it used to be the standard for athletic outfits for wrestlers and acrobats. Batman's costume is all about the imposing silhouette plus functionality. Going all black kinda emphasizes the important part. Superman's costume is about athleticism an pizazz. Without the shorts it just looks weird, looks like something's missing. I will say that the comic book black and grey Batman without the shorts looks similarly stupid. It just seems kinda dumb that trunks have become a point of superhero embarrassment, but not capes.

  • July 23, 2012, 1:45 a.m. CST

    Excellent point, the_genteel_gentile...

    by DarkHawke

...and surely you can interpret the limited footage in this teaser as outlining that struggle. Then again, the Superman: Birthright limited comic book series recast Supes as a fucking vegetarian. I hope your interpretation is correct, because I would love NOTHING more than to see a great new Superman film, if for no other reason than to ease the pain of the previous outing.

  • Oh, and have a fling with that mermaid chick Lori Lemaris.

    After watching the comic-con footage

    by E. D.

They should have included the quick shot of him on fire, and ended the teaser with the same last shot of his foot stepping into frame in front of the armed men. And sorry but neither Costner nor Crowe's voices are very good for their roles, they are too ... "them". Nothing comes close too Brando's, they should hire a good Brando impersonator to dub all of Crowe's dialogue.

The problem with the shorts wouldn't be a problem if they

    by throatwarbler_mangrove

made them look like shorts, and not speedos or bathing suit material. Like shorts made of denim.

  • Superman would appear to the world for the first time, stopping a crime or preventing some sort of horrific accident. We all know that there'd be tons of amateur video footage now that nearly every shmoe has a smart phone or simple camera in their cell. The media is in a frenzy trying to figure out what the hell happened and who or what this superpowered being is. What are his true intentions? Was this an act of selflessness, or maybe a show of power from a god? People would be loosing their minds over this kind of thing. So Lois starts investigating this superbeing. Her tenaciousness is her biggest asset, and with a little luck she captures the attention of Supes. He eventually agrees to sit down for an interview with her, to calm the nerves of the populace by stating his positive intentions towards humanity. He does this because of all the frenzy of the media and people freaking out, many anticipating the end of the world approaching, interpreting Superman as a sign from God, or even as the Second Coming of Christ. This would be sort of a sneaky yet unconventional way to efficiently do a Superman reboot/origin story. Not a found footage film either. This would be more like All The President's Men for the first half, then would slowly morph into the more epic styled spectacle of a superhero film.

Why, because they show a freaking butterfly?

  • "Bu-Bu-He never worked on a fishing boat".. Well in this version he fucking does. So what? Just shut the fuck up. <P> The Richard Donner version is the truest, comic-book minded Superman film. Anything Snyder does to stay absolutely true to the comics will just be repeating the steps Richard Donner took and they want this to set itself apart from his perfect film. So it's going to be different, much like Grant Morrison's take on the character is very different then Jerry Siegel's original. <P> Welcome to comic books.

Really nice little teaser there. I was a bit worried that Snyder was going to go a bit too, well, 'Snyder' with it. But it seems like he reeled it in a little and has some really nice shots there. I'm a lifelong, passionate fan of Donner's original and unappologetically loved SUPERMAN RETURNS. It's really too bad they didn't look to just continue from there. But this looks promising. Still not too keen on the suit. Don't dig the idea of Jor-El walking around Kansas (judging by the spy pics. I could be wrong) and I really cannot stand Russell Crowe (not sure why. He just rubs me the wrong way for some reason) but, eh...Still looks interesting.

    re: Ultratron/Eli_Cash/rupee88

    by sasquatch_with_a_swatch_watch

Ultratron- The reasons people complain and natter on endlessly on this site are 1. Geeks are buying these tickets and therefore getting these films sequelized, re-booted, etc. If you care about these characters- and it is an endless fucking ping pong match between fat retards straight out of Napoleon Dynamite- than it seems, lamely enough, worth your time to convince idiots that this film may STILL be worth seeing even if the visuals don't dance inside your head like a drunk Stan Lee doing a rumba in your head at the Marvel office party. (DC fans are simply after something else in their movies. 'Nuff said.) 2. These talkbacks are like the exit polls after the preview screening. As insane as it may seem, movie studio people DO read this stuff and occasionally listen to the input. Rupee88- What the hell is AMS? I agree with what you're saying, though, people buy tickets to stupid movies, stupid movies get made. You people pay Michael Bay's salary. He should wear Nolanrulz239 on a patch on his jacket, just like Dale Earnhardt. This talkback is 97 percent unwitting underoo hypemachine, 2 percent pro-wrestling Drano/Gatorade chuggers, (SUPERMAN NEEDS TO BE MORE MACHO AND FUCK STUFF UP) and one percent intelligent insightful film criticism of the Harry Knowles, Joe Dante type. Oh, and the Star Trek nerd types who actually want to discuss the fucking plausibility of Con Trails. Sheesh. Eli Cash- Taking the trunks away was a bad move, but we'll see. All black Batsuit in the Nolanverse is utter shit, and I always watch those movies wondering why no one gives a fuck that the design and the aesthetics are crap, but the scripts are lofty and tricky, so.... Some delusion going on there on the part of the audience. Not a fan. There's a delicate balance between the implausibility of comic design and how it plays on film... but many movies haven't the let test audiences scare them and so we've gotten the original Supermans, The Spirit, Watchmen... a little color tweaking and lighting helps... But when your character in part has his origins, in part, in 1930's strongmen, taking away part of his most easily associated archetypal garb could prove to be distracting... and even worse... like so many failed comics adaptations... could prove to seem manipulative. This movie, though.... Who said "Welcome to comic books, people?" Yes. This might be something very special.

  • He bounces the beam off a mirror made from polished metal from his spaceship. Basically, any question about Supes' personal hygiene or his wardrobe can be answered with "he jury-rigged something from his spaceship." Why doesn't his costume burn up from friction? It's made out of the leather and cloth from his spaceship and his baby blanket. How could Ma Kent sew his costume? He used his heat vision to cut the thread for her, and he made a sewing needle out of a bit of metal from the spaceship. How come his glasses don't melt when he uses his heat vision? The lenses are made from the canopy of the spaceship. Etc, etc, etc...

    by Tigger11

I was really hoping the movie would delve deep into the time Clark worked on the Bering Sea catching crab on the fishing boat Metropolis/Smallville/Citadel/Solitude (pick your favorite, they are all funny, and one may actually be the name of the ship when the movie plays), thankfully Snyder has gone with this approach. Honestly when I clicked on it on yahoo and got the video, I really assumed it was the wrong video (or an ad) until I actually saw superman flying, or possibly it was something for an Aquaman movie, but now apparently Kal-el is also a crab fisherman. If Zod landed in the water or something I can see town like this in the movie, but otherwise why exactly is the boy from a farm in a town called Smallville in middle america, fishing for crab in Alaska?

I used to tie myself to a cable hung up in a tree (pieces from an old swing actually) and swing back and forth with a cape and space helmet on. I built special rocket boots out of a cheap pair fake cowboy boots (cut out the heels and bolted in a small metal box to the heel of each boot and built out a holder for smoke bombs). Light the smoke bombs and voila - I'm dangling around in a circle in my back yard with smoking ankles. It could happen.

You fucks love Superman but can't stand Clark Kent, because what you really want, in the Aqua Net perfume of your most neon 1980's dreams... is red metal and lasers set to AC/ DC music. You don't want comic movies, you want USA Network. Hey, at least Marvel's figured this out! Explains all those great Nic Cage and Ben Affleck choices

Snyder, you may not like his shit... but he's an auteur. Means he's gonna make the movies he wants to make, regardless of the cynics who scream "HE'S TAKING NOTES TO MAKE HIS MOVIE LIKE BATMAN BEGINS" Dawn of the Dead... And the fact that Frank Miller is a fan of his...Should testify to the fact that he's gonna make the fucking movie he wants to make...As billion dollar successes will actually give you that kind of rare carte blanche.

I'm not sure what else can be done with the Batman costume in a live action movie. I'll admit I'm not particularly fond of the actual design of the body armor in TDK. It's too busy and mechanical looking. But I can't see a movie batman wearing spandex and not looking ridiculous. He's not bulletproof like superman, and isn't low rent like spiderman. Every live action treatment of Batman that uses the traditional tights always looks silly to me, even Batman Dead End.

...maybe Brandon Routh wasn't all that bad..." LOL! It's just movie! And it's about a comic book SUPERHERO!!! Not exactly profound stuff... Just relax and take it as they spoon feed it to you in your high-chair...! :)

  • Barf!!! Burp... (now I'm escaping from my high-chair) Running amok...!!!!!!!!! Hey Brandon Routh, what are you up to? Nothing. Well, let's play some Gears of War horde mode then and order pizza and prostitutes.

  • How about some Asians? Latinos? Superman is racist. He is just a glorified Nietzschian uberman. What a crock of Nazi propaganda!

  • Morpheus, Niobe, Link, Tank, and Capt. Mifune. I think even Trinity was originally supposed to be an Asian woman in early drafts of the script for the first film.

    Perry White!

    by Emperor_was_a_jerk

Guess he isn't that important or else I would have gotten th name right!

  • Angela Bassett as Martha Kent. Superman raised by a black couple would have been a ballsy update of the origin myth of Clark Kent/Superman. I'm half joking on all this Superman is racist thing of course, even though yes, it could work having either a white or a black couple raising Clark out on a farm in Smallville.

How can anyone compare Batman Begins to Returns?

    by Kenny8

Are the handful of Singerman disciples STILL clinging to the ridiculous notion that Singerman Returns made more money than Batman Begins?? Thanks to the bore fest that was Singerman we have this new direction. The only thing that worries looks to be a "wobble cam" production...

  • Blue (Superman's suit). Red (Superman's cape). Also, Agent Smith is sort of a Lex Luthor/Zod combo. Well dressed professional business looking type who acquires god-like powers that are a match for the powers of Neo (Superman), and thinks of himself as a superior being compared to the whole of humanity. So the Wachowskis basically made a postmodern Superman. The good news here is that Snyder apes a lot of their stylistic techniques in his films (speed ramping and extreme slo-mo bullet-time style shots), so perhaps Man of Steel will feel a bit like a Wachowski Bros. version of Superman? At least for the action sequences.

  • Don't you know that is not the AICN way anymore? Ever since Prometheus the status quo here is that everything is great. I sense an impending whack from the banhammer for you.

  • Minorities aren't absent from the movie. It does contain a Kryptonian-American.

Justifiable homocide does not exist in the Dark Knight Dojo

    by Eli_Cash

A serious flaw with the Nolan Batman ethics I think. It makes sense that he doesn't kill in revenge, however horrendous the crime, because he will not take the law into his own hands. Also he really shouldn't kill in self defense because A) he doesn't need to for the most part, and B) he is the one who gets himself into these dangerous situations. He isn't the Punisher. He isn't a vigilante. But when he is confronted with a Clear And Present Danger To The Lives of Innocent People, the heroic thing to do is to eliminate the threat, even if it requires killing.

  • Batman doesn't kill. For him, there is always another way. It's the core of his character.

  • July 24, 2012, 2:56 a.m. CST

    Technically Burton Batman did kill.

    by Eli_Cash

But I don't really consider him a legitimate Batman. He didn't just kill as a last resort, he seemed positively bloodthirsty. I also believe the Miller Batman killed, but again its questionable how authentic that Batman is. But I stand by my criticism, whether its just Nolan-Bat or all of Batman, its not truly heroic to live by just one rule regardless of circumstances. Such an ethic is a bit too shallow, especially for a "realistic" rendering.

  • Still a little blurry but you can tell it's going to be epic....definitely encouraged after watching that.

  • Hrmmmm.

jellypop -- well, the MoS teaser did have a Malick mood to it

    by lv_426

Not just the butterfly and clotheslines, but the overall feel and camera movement to a lot of the shots. Which doesn't surprise me since Nolan is a big fan of Malick. Now, I'm not pissed that it looks Malicky in some scenes, but more the sense of it being a bit overly dark and moody for a Superman movie. The comic con teaser was a better first look I'd say. I did like the Kevin Costner narration in the teaser. Henry Cavil seems like he will make an interesting Clark/Superman. Michael Shannon as Zod is what I'm the most interested in. Shannon is always solid in whatever he appears in. I just hope that they don't overdo the brooding side of Superman, as Nolan is sometimes a bit too serious in the way he approaches this kind of material. Does it have to be as fun and fluffy as RDJ as Stark/Iron Man? No. Hopefully Nolan's serious mindedness will bring some of Snyder's over-stylization down to Earth a bit. Maybe those two sensibilities will create a good balance?

Terrence Malick making a superhero film

    by lv_426

Now I'd buy that for a dollar. Maybe something a bit more like an Unbreakable type of hero concept would work with a Malick style. I'd really love to see Malick work with something like that. Especially seeing the cosmic imagery he played with in Tree of Life.

    The kid in the cape

    by Kakii

Why is everyone assuming that's Clark? It could be either just used for the teaser or it could be from the end once the world embraces Superman. Decent teaser, looks like Snyder is evolving as a director, there is the Nolan influence. I just hope we don't get another Rocky remake that's supposed to be influenced by A Tale of 2 Cities or maybe its a Rambo remake as Clark gets pushed by a hick cop whilst hitchhiking and looking like a bum and its heavily influenced by Great Expectations.

  • July 24, 2012, 8:22 a.m. CST

    Fuck Terrence Malick...

    by KJC75

First of all, "The Tree of Life" was a piece of shit movie. I was bored off my ass. So could we please stop saying Terrence Malick. You people treat him like he's the godfather of film. Second, we all know John Williams' "Superman" theme isn't going to be apart of this, get over that. Yes, whatever Hans Zimmer puts out won't ever match the genius of John Williams, but that just proves what a god of cinema Mr. Williams really is. He's untouchable on that theme music. Now, I wasn't all that impressed with the trailer either, but I am damn glad to finally see some footage. Woo hoo for the bastards that got to see more at Comic-Con. I think the tone is right. I don't want a cheesy, happy go-lucky Superman movie. I want a dark look at what it feels like for a man who isn't from this planet to find his place in the world. "Smallville" is the closest thing we have so far. And just because we haven't seen him hitting something or someone in the trailer doesn't mean that this movie is "Deadliest Catch", you people have no's all payoff now, now, now...makes me think a lot of you are fucking terrible at sex. Must be why half of you sit around jerking yourselves off at your own cleverness. So what if Snyder is being influenced by Nolan...rock on...Nolan has proven with three Batman movies and with "Inception" that his style is well-received with audiences, myself included. Besides it's about time Snyder stretched himself a bit and gave us something different to look at other than slow-mo action. He will include that shit in this movie I'm sure, but it wouldn't kill him to learn some new tricks. This movie may not impress everyone, but it will still make a shit load of money just because it has Nolan's name attached to it. I think the casting it perfect, especially Cavill, Lane, Costner, and I like having a red-headed Lois Lane with Adams taking over. Maybe if we can get behind this one they might throw us a fucking bone and give us some Darkseid, Brainiac, or Doomsday.

  • It's like a joke on my twelve year old self... always wanted there to be a ton of good superhero movies and we're nearly there except for the fact that almost every single one is an origin story (or a goddamn retirement story or an i-lost-my-powers story). How about a story about the hero being the hero and not all this constant shit about becoming or unbecoming the hero?

Doomsday is the only thing I want to see less than an origin story

    by Autodidact

Following the same theme as my last post, a Doomsday movie would be about Superman dying. Can we just have a movie that is about the middle of a hero's career, when they've already worked out the costume but have no plans to retire or quit any time soon (and retiring/quitting/loss of powers is not the story)? It's like every movie tries in some way to be Superman, Superman II, or Empire Strikes Back (father is secretly responsible for your power... gee willickers).

    @dweeb Whining about Catch jokes

    by Tigger11

When there is more footage of boats and ships and the sea then of Superman/Clark Kent in a Superman reboot movie trailer, there is going to be jokes. I mean they are showing Kal-el crab fishing in Alaska, thats a pretty big change from Clarks usual backstory. We are going to get 2 hr maybe 2 1/2 hour movie and we are going to get an origin, both sets of parents, Smallville Kansas apparently, fishing in Alaska apparently as well as hitchhiking, a bank robbery, and General Zod and two(?) other Kryptonians and Lana Lang and Lois Lane. Doesn't that sound more then a little busy? Superman Returns wasnt a good reboot, I'm not sure this is going to be any better given the trailers they are showing.

Ah, now I know what's bugging me about the flying

    by E. D.

The cape isn't moving anything like a piece of material rapidly fluttering at 700 mph. The contrail begins way too close to his feet, for going at that speed (he would be a lot further away from the start of the visible trail at any given moment). This is in addition to the already-mentioned badly rendered sonic boom effect. Now, if all this had been done right, I'd say this would have been quite an effective shot.
