HERCULES ON THE RADIO!!
Aint It Cool’s TV Critic Chats Up The Great Writer Jane Espenson, She Of BUFFY, FIREFLY, DS9, GALACTICA, CAPRICA, GILMORE, THRONES, TORCHWOOD, OC, ANGEL, DOLLHOUSE And THE BATMAN Fame!! Listen And Call In LIVE 8pm PT Saturday!!

Published at: July 21, 2012, 1:58 a.m. CST

I am – Hercules!!

On Saturday night’s radio show, the KERN Krew and I will be chatting up prolific TV writer Jane Espenson, holder of one of the best resumes in television.

Jane was booked on the show weeks ago, but she coincidentally penned “Earshot” -- one of my favorite “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” episodes -- and the mind-reading episode that was yanked from The WB’s schedule at the last minute.

The reason “Earshot” was yanked? It depicted troubled student Jonathan Levinson loading a rifle on Buffy’s Sunnydale High School campus -- and it was set to air exactly one week after the April 20, 1999, Columbine High School massacre.

Stiil not timely enough for this “Dark Knight Rises” weekend? Espenson also wrote (with fellow Buffy alum Doug Petrie) 2007’s two-part “The Joining” episode of “The Batman.”

More recently, Espenson wrote a whopping six of last season’s 22 episodes of ABC’s “Once Upon A Time.”

On Aug. 15 she launches (on LoveHusbands.com) season two of her super-gay Web series “Husbands” with a hilarious premiere featuring guest stars Tricia Helfer (“Battelstar Galactica”), Dichen Lachman (“Dollhouse,” “Being Human”) and hot newcomer Joss Whedon (“Angel,” “Veronica Mars”) as “The Agent.”

The radio show airs Saturday 8:05 p.m. to 10 p.m. Pacific Time.

No matter where you are you can listen to the show LIVE by hitting the “Listen Live” button at kernradio.com.

Best of all, you, constant reader, can join this very nerdy conversation.

The toll-free call-in line is:
1-800-640-5376

Call in drunk, as I always do, but watch your language. This is not a podcast. This monster goes out over the air on all 50,000 watts of Southern California’s KERN-AM.

Oh and I LOVE Espenson's blog.

    by gotilk

http://www.janeespenson.com/ I have found a lot of great tips and huge amounts of encouragement for writers on her blog. She also has some great Firefly-related essays that you should not miss if you're a fan of the show.

    waltkovacs ...YES! THREE HOURS!!!

    by gotilk

It must happen. The show could use a great radio stunt. Take over the station for that extra hour and make the *Stop Obama Express* an hour late. They won't notice. Honest. Heh. No, seriously. Third hour is REQUIRED!

  • July 21, 2012, 8:45 a.m. CST

    Good morning friends!

    by mjgtexas

    but with a better personality.

  • July 21, 2012, 2:55 p.m. CST

    The "great" Jane Espenson?!

    by TheyPeedOnYourFuckingRug

You mean the lady who was key in running BATTLESTAR GALACTICA into the ground when she signed on in the third season, who personally wrote the very worst episodes of that series in addition to the monumental abortion THE PLAN which took what little was left of the show's integrity and turned that into a giant retroactive joke too, and who did her finishing number on that universe as showrunner of the Disney Channel series CAPRICA? Gay teen emodrama is very much Espenson's speed; why anyone thought it was a good idea to put somebody like this on BSG is anyone's guess. Screw 'er.

    by L.H.Puttgrass

And I wouldn't want him to pee or crap on the rug or have one of my dogs pee or crap on him! I'm not sure where I'm going with this. Never mind.

  • I'm almost done. It's not 20 movies though. I couldn't do that. At the moment it is 10 pages. I know. I know. With work the way its been and the list growing... Sorry. There's a light at the end of the tunnel! And when the train hits me I'll stop writing.

I think she did a short story about immortals that still gives me nightmares. The people are immortal, they live forever, but after a certain number of years... thousands and thousands, maybe even millions, they become almost like diamonds. But first they lose limbs and people feed them this creepy milk stuff when they are just limbless lumps. .....creeeeeepy.

    "the great writer"?

    by Laserhead

Really? The only television writers, EVER, who could honestly be called 'great writers' are: 1) Dennis Potter 2) David Milch 3) David Simon Anything else and you're kidding yourself. Calling someone who writes a shit-ton of mediocre-to-bad television a 'great writer' kind of defeats the premise of 'art' in general. Just my thoughts. I love television and I love good television, and that's why I commented on a thread about a TV writer who is in no way extraordinary.

10 Years of Movies - I finally finished it.

    by L.H.Puttgrass

I really like all these movies. Most I love, but it’s hard to edit which likes should be here or not. Where’s the line? One thing is for sure. I’ve missed a lot of movies over the last 10 years. This is not the person I remember being during those years that started with a one and a nine. I must correct this. And I will. If a movie seems to be missing from the list, I either didn’t like it enough to include it, didn’t like it at all, or didn’t see it. If there’s something that you don’t agree with, well, it’s my list, my rules, I get to make’em up. They are in no particular order except for the years. Enjoy.

Equilibrium - Gun Kata anyone? I love the fight scenes in this cool movie. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - Peter Jackson’s grand telling of the tale continues… Road to Perdition – Tom Hanks, cast against type, as a mob boss’s hitman. The mob boss also has a backstabbing, coward of a son… Trouble soon follows and everyone’s sorrier for it. Spider-Man – I’ll admit it. When I heard about the organic webshooters I was ready to write this one off. But it works. Even with the Goblin’s Power Ranger suit. It doesn’t just work, it’s good. Very good. Bubba Ho-Tep – It’s The Bruce as Elvis! You could stop right there. But there’s also JFK and a murderous mummy! Minority Report – Spielberg, Cruise, and Philip K. Dick, what a combo. Great movie. Great ideas. Cool SFX. Signs – I love this one! Warts and all. The Eye – The Pang brothers knock one out of the park. Creepy, spooky, and with an elevator that I would not get in. Not me. Not with the dude whose toes don’t touch the ground. Spirited Away – This is weird. I remember this movie. All the characters… but I don’t know if I actually seen the movie. It’s Hayao Miyazaki! I seen Princess Mononoke and loved it! I remember wanting to see this. I just can’t remember what the plot was or how it ends. But… I loved it.

The Cooler – William H. Macy as a guy so unlucky that he is paid to stand next to people who are winning at a casino. If you haven’t seen this that first sentence should be enough to get you going. What many people don’t know is that Macy was Droopy the dog in another life. Open Range – Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner are armed and pissed off somethin’ fierce. The people responsible don’t get it. So they get it. Who don’t love a good western? Elf – Try not to smile watching this. And then there’s Zooey! And then there’s that cast! Will Ferrell, James Caan, Bob Newhart, Ed Asner, Mary Steenburgen, Peter Dinklage, Michael Lerner, Andy Richter, and Leon Fucking REDBONE! A stop motion animated Leon Redbone the Snowman! Instant. Classic. Lost in Translation – I spent one Sunday running around Sasebo, Japan. Mostly at night. Almost everything was closed. Bad timing for shore leave I guess. This movie brought back that odd day. That look on Murray’s face when he doesn’t know what’s going on or why, I have felt his pain. This film conveys such a sense of place and isolation. Surrounded by people and totally alone. Hulk – I don’t care what you say. I loved this movie. Warts n’ all. The Laws of Physics say that the Hulk can’t throw a tank in the air that way? I don’t care ‘cuz the comics say he can. ‘Cuz he’s the Friggin’ HULK!! Kill Bill: Vol. 1 – “There! Tarantino PURE AND SIMPLE by way of the Eighth Dimension!” This movie is all Hattori Hanzo steel. Finding Nemo – Pure Pixar magic. If you don’t know what that means, you haven’t seen a Pixar film. Oldboy - If I had a hammer. I'd hammer in the morning. I'd hammer in the evening. All over this hallway! I'd hammer out danger! I'd hammer out a warning! I'd hammer out my wrath between my brothers and these other assorted scum! All over this long fucking hallway! Oh Dae-Su is pissed! And this movie is so great! I hear they’re remaking this with Spike Lee directing and starring Josh Brolin. I bet it will be something! But in another timeline, there’s an Oldboy remake with Cronenberg directing and starring Nicolas Cage! And it blows the roof off the place! The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – The Grand Finale! Well worth the wait. Pure spectacle. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl – The first and the best with Johnny Depp having so much fun playing Captain Jack Sparrow.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy – I’m a movie that discovered the wheel and built the Eiffel Tower out of metal and brawn. That's what kind of movie I am. You're just a movie goer with a small brain. With a brain a third the size of mine. It's science. Fucking funny science! The Incredibles – Arguably the best Pixar movie. Ever. Spider-Man 2 – Unarguably the best Spider-man movie. Ever. Shaun of the Dead – The dead are walking the Earth! The perfect time for a perfect comedy. Laugh? I thought I’d die. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – The first two were good, but this one was great. Was it Alfonso Cuarón’s direction? Was it the three leads maturing into their roles? Probably both. Kill Bill: Vol. 2 – “You’ll believe a woman can punch her way out of a grave!” And you’ll learn the difference between Superman and all the other superheroes! Hellboy – Del Toro. In his wheelhouse and having a ball! “That’s gonna be sore in the morning!” Sideways – Paul Giamatti and Thomas Hayden Church go on a road trip in California’s wine country. And they run into trouble everywhere. At one point, trouble runs after them. In the form of a tall, angry, naked man chasing them down the street with his twig and berries bouncing about for comedic effect. Team America: World Police – This one hurt my sides. Parker and Stone will do anything for a laugh. Especially if they can make a puppet do it instead of them! Matt! Damon! Kung Fu Hustle – Bat-Shit-Crazy. If a roadrunner cartoon fucked a Hong Kong Kung Fu flick this would be the offspring. I have the Blu-Ray. ‘Nough said.

Batman Begins – Nolan purges the after taste of Batman & Robin. And this grateful fan says thank you. Serenity – The unfairly canceled series gets a chance to tie up some plot strings and have what could be a proper end if they never make another one. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – Just like the books, this is where things really start getting dark. Some people don’t make it through this one. It was sad at the time but now it’s okay because it’s just that annoying Edward Cullen who buys it. SUCK IT, ED!! That’s sort of a pun if you squint. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang – Oh, God how funny is this? Does Harry still have his finger? I lost track. Sin City – The comic book come to life. It’s a visual feast. I love the part where Marvin has his ‘mitts’ on his list of stuff he needs.

Casino Royale – The franchise gets shaken and stirred back to life. Bond is dangerous and unpredictable again. Children of Men – A harrowing tale of the near future where a man is entrusted with a fragile spark that may light the way out of the darkness. Cuarón creates another striking film that sticks with you. Pan's Labyrinth – Guillermo Del Toro showing us what he does best. Doug Jones showing us what he does best. You don’t watch this film, you enter its world. The Fountain – Not Spider-man. And yet, amazing…

No Country for Old Men – Not your average crime drama. Several people on a collision course with a guy and his compressed air tank. Javier Bardem the baddest bad guy with a bad haircut since Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction. “Would you hold still, please, sir?” Ratatouille – Brad Bird + Pixar? The Incredibles wasn’t a fluke. And this is a wonderful movie. There Will Be Blood – A riveting story about two differently obsessed people on a collision course. A very long collision course. When they finally collide, it is so priceless! I love a movie that tells you when it’s finished.

The Dark Knight – Raimi had his Spider-man 2. Nolan has his Dark Knight. He continues his gritty real world vision of Batman with an astonishing take on the Joker. Nobody saw Heath Ledger coming. No one thought he could do it. But he shut them all up and BECAME the Joker! Everything Heath does is perfect. Every quirk. Every tick. He is the Joker. I love this complex Batman mob movie. Probably the best comic book movie ever. Iron Man – If the Dark Knight ain’t the best comic book movie ever, then this may be it. Though it may have to fight it out with Spidey 2 for the title. RDJ nails Tony Stark. And this movie just hums along beautifully. It’s simply great. Gran Torino – Clint Eastwood. Telling kids to get off his lawn. At gun point! WALL•E – Pixar. Again doing what many others cannot. Story. Characters. Detail. And amazing visuals. The beginning section with no dialog communicated so much about Wall*E’s lonely existence. Great film making. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – A beautiful and mesmerizing movie. In a weird way it’s the Anti-Forrest Gump. They use the location filming in New Orleans to great effect. Fincher’s camera captures such a sense of time and place. It’s a wonder. Let the Right One In – This is such a unique take on the classic vampire mythology. It’s about the passing of a torch of sorts. One guy is realizing that his time of usefulness to the girl vampire is coming to an end. And another whose time of ‘service’ is about to begin whether he’s aware of it or not. I take the title as being from the vampire’s point of view. She needs someone she can trust to take over the duties of the old guy or she won’t survive. The American remake, Let me in, swung the title around to the young boy. As if he wants to be her servant. At first, he just needs a friend, any friend he can get. When he finds out her true nature, that’s when he has to make the choice. I love the climatic pool scene near the end. Movie magic.

    2009

    by L.H.Puttgrass

Inglourious Basterds – Tarantino makes a WW2 movie. His way. History be damned. It is absolutely glorious! Everyone is enjoying themselves and chewing the scenery with great gusto! And Hitler gets ‘Lincolned’ real good! Avatar – This movie blew me away. Period. If you’re mad at Cameron for making ‘Dances with Wolves in Space’ I think you’re being unfair. With that argument, you could say Avatar is District 9 with us going to the aliens instead of them coming here. There are many stories about heroes who find themselves on the wrong side of a conflict and then try to correct it. The fact of the matter is that Cameron & Co. create a world from the ground up and it is spectacular! The level of detail is fascinating! The 3D is totally immersive and it sucked me in completely. I willingly bought it all. I can’t wait for what Jim has in store next. Watchmen – How does Snyder walk with balls that size? He tried to film the unfilmable Watchmen! He comes so close to sticking the landing with a level of difficulty that is so damn high. My only two quibbles concern a character and a plot point. With so many characters spot on like they were in the book, why the changes to Ozymandias’ costume. It seems too bulky. And the plot point? To squid or not to squid. The new ending is clever, but I think I’m in the ‘To squid’ camp. I still think it’s a very good movie. Can you believe someone made a Watchmen movie! Snyder needs a Hoveround! Star Trek – Oh, boy. They rebooted Star Trek. Or did they? Spock tries to stop a disaster using a dangerous material and it goes awry. The result is him and some angry Romulans are shot into the past in an alternate timeline. A timeline where Federation history is changed by the vengeful Romulans. So, is Star Trek rebooted? Back in the original timeline, aren’t they wondering where Spock is and why letters and newspapers are piling up on his doorstep? The movie does have some screwy science but it sure does empty my bag of popcorn. I think J.J. did good on his first try. Up – This one will have you laughing and crying. I love it. Who doesn’t? Maybe Oscar the Grouch? I have one word for you. “SQUIRREL!” District 9 - Neill Blomkamp, giving proof to the fact that they should have just let the man make that damn Halo movie. This guy can do so much with so little. Yeah, I got the Blu-Ray. Fantastic Mr. Fox – Have you smiled today? Do you need to? Pop this one in your Blu-Ray player and sit the fuck down! You are about to get a silly grin on your face, stop-motion animation style. Moon – It will remind you of the Moon parts of 2001, but with a twist of the Twilight Zone. Duncan Jones messes with your head. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – Mr. Potter gets dark and serious before everything goes off the rails in Deathly Hallows.

Inception – Complicated plot? I don’t know how I followed the plot in this one. As everything progressed, I knew what was happening and why. Chalk it up to Nolan’s direction or the movie’s script or the editing or whatever. I sat there in my seat mesmerized and astonished by the sci-fi heist caper that transpired before my eyes. Do I have the Blu-Ray? You bet your ass I do. Kick-Ass – Arron Johnson does a good job as the title character in this film, but it really shines when Hit-Girl and Big Daddy are on the screen. While they are taking out bad guys the movie has some of its best moments. I loved Nic’s Adam West impersonation. Toy Story 3 – Who knew they had yet another great story to tell? Woody and the gang get into trouble when Andy goes to college and they get boxed up and sent to a daycare facility. Well, the daycare ain’t what they thought it would be and they soon find themselves in an adventure worthy of the Great Escape. This one goes a little darker than the first two but it still tugs the heart strings and produces laughs with ease. Another win for Pixar. Red – I’ve been a Bruce Willis fan since Moonlighting. For me this flick hit the right balance of comedy and thrilling action. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. John Malkovich: “Old man my ass!” Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 – The beginning of the end. The world becomes a dangerous place for Harry and his friends as they are hunted by Voldemort’s forces while trying to find the Horcruxes and the Deathly Hallows. Without them they can’t kill Voldemort! Some may say it drags a little while they’re hiding out, but that never bothered me. There was some nice character interaction there. This builds nicely into part 2. I just wish part 2 started when this finished. True Grit – Such a great flick! The three leads were great! Bridges, Steinfeld, and Damon! Matt! Damon! I loved Bridges’ "Rooster" Cogburn. He just makes the movie.

X-Men: First Class – Just an excellent X-Men movie. With Michael Fassbender stealing the movie as Erik Lehnsherr on a private mission of vengeance. I loved how they wove the story into the historic events of the early 60’s. Very cool. Moneyball – This film had me from the beginning to the end. The story is the classic “Necessity is the Mother of Invention” plot. Brad Pitt is the GM of the A’s and is in dire need of good players but has almost no money to hire them. He meets Hill who shows him a radical idea for picking players using computer analysis. And the shit hits the fan. Its old ways vs. new as Pitt fills his roster with players that no one wants including his front office and especially his manager. This is just a good baseball movie. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 – It All Ends. That’s what the posters said and that’s exactly what happens… in grand fashion! A very satisfying conclusion to the Harry Potter Saga. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – I’ve seen both this and the Swedish version and I feel that while they are somewhat different they are also similar due to the identical source material. Different directors and a different cast telling the same story in different languages. And both doing a great job of it. I would give Fincher the nod for his film. Mara is amazing as Lizbeth and Craig never makes me think of Bond as he totally inhabits the role of Blomkvist. Sweden is such a cold dark and indifferent wasteland of danger in his film. I hope Fincher is doing the next book. I will happily buy a ticket to see it. Source Code - Duncan Jones. He does his thing again. With a twist of Twilight Zoney lemon-lime flavor. This is a good one. But I’m worried about Duncan. The road of twisty movies is dangerous. Beware its traps! Beware the fate of M. Night Shamalamatwistit-tilitbreaks-off!!! Paul – Pegg and Frost just crack me up. This movie, it puts a grin on my face. So sue me. Every time Ruth tries her hand at cussing I grin some more. This is simply a fun movie. So grab your popcorn, sit down and pop the Blu-Ray in. The Adjustment Bureau – Speaking of Twilight Zone movies… I caught this one on cable in HD. It’s a Twilight Zone episode from its plot, to its ideas, to the early 60’s style suits and hats that the Bureau members wear. I know it’s a Philip K. Dick story. It just screams Zone at me. And that ain’t bad. It’s good! Oh, and “MATT! DAMON!” Rango – Absolutely love the character designs and set decoration. Depp is hilarious as Rango. The Mariachi Owls are perfect. Verbinski has made a wonderful movie. “Rang-gooooooo! Rang-goo-Ooooooooo!” * Rise of the Planet of the Apes – This is odd. Have not seen this one. Have it on my DVR. Can’t figure out why it was made. Is it a prequel to Burton’s Planet of the Apes? Is that even needed? Is it a prequel to Heston’s? Wasn’t that already done? Is it a reboot? Do we really need yet another reboot of anything? It’s like the movies are zombies that won’t die! They just keep rising from the grave all the worse for wear. Anyway, everyone said it was good and I can’t figure out why it was made in the first place. So, should I watch it?

The Cabin in the Woods – Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon throw everything including a couple kitchen sinks at the classic story of teenagers getting themselves killed in the middle of nowhere by various unknown creepy forces or their own stupid actions. I can’t tell you the plot because it will spoil movie and also I will probably forget something. I WILL forget something. It is that convoluted. Each twist raises the stakes all the way to the end. And it is glorious! Remember now, somewhere out there lurks the Angry Molesting Tree! And Kevin. Brave – This is a beautiful Pixar movie. I loved the story and the humor. It did not bother me in the least that there was magic in the story or that it figured prominently in the plot of the movie. Unlike many reviewers who seemed to have a problem with magic suddenly appearing in the movie. As if they didn’t notice the little blue wisps in the forest earlier in the film. What did they think they were? Creatures of fact or fantasy? Magical creatures perhaps? I found this to be one the weirdest criticisms of the movie. Oh, and there is also a witch in the movie. Go figure. As I said, this is a beautiful film and I loved it. The Avengers – This is the best Ironman movie. It’s also the best Captain America movie. The best Thor movie too. Hell, it’s the best Hulk movie ever! And guess what? It’s all in one movie! Joss, you crazy madman. You made an Avengers movie! Do I have to say I loved it? When does the Blu-Ray come out? A Princess of Mars (John Carter) – A victim of one of the worst ad campaigns EVER! Disney, did you not know what you had here? Why change the name? Since this is a story that was written a hundred years ago, some people may not be familiar with it. Even if it is a classic! Wait! It IS a classic!! Again, why change the name?! And why not mention Mars in any of the trailers? And why show the outcome of several key scenes in those stupid trailers? I went in knowing the source of the story and the setting… MARS! I also knew the “science” in the story was from a hundred years ago. So I enjoyed it on the same level that I would enjoy Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, or even Edgar Rice Burroughs! Yeah, I said his name! Why couldn’t you! It’s Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess of Mars, not Disney’s John Carter you idiots! Anyway, I saw it in IMAX 3D and I loved it! And fuck you, Disney! Men in Black 3 – As good as if not better than the first one. Brolin is just too cool as Young K and this one is just too good. The Dark Knight Rises – I have not yet seen this. Want to. Just thought I’d mention it. That’s it. I’m finished!

I wish I had broken mine down like that in separate posts. It would've been easier to manage. You'll probably find like I have that something is missing and kick yourself. This all but proves gotilk's point that there were many great movies in the last decade. No complaints in fact just more good recommendations for a few that I missed. Moon for instance. Great job!

  • Really funny, but not sure if the KERNheads™ can handle the Cheeks. If Herc (gilmoregirls4eva) describes the show as super-gay. It is SUPERGAY. You will believe a man can fly...with another man. (Spent last half hour googling Alessandra Torresani.)

With the way I've been working lately, I just couldn't do it in one sitting. So I opened it in Word and put it on a flash drive. I added to it when I had time. You're right. I did forget some. After I finished posting I saw that I had forgotten the Bourne movies. Among others. It was all one long Word file. 11 pages worth. Luckily, it was divided by years so posted them separately. I'm glad it's done. Whew. gotilk was definitely right about the last ten years of movies.

  • Reminded me of SO many movies I left out or forgot about... that didn't deserve to be forgotten. Great list, right up my alley too. Shit, I couldn't find one I disagreed with you on. That's just BIZARRE. Oh except Rise of the Planet of The Apes. Yes, it is worth seeing. But you're right... why? I guess someone wanted it made. Luckily, it mostly works. Wait..... James Franco as a brilliant scientist... hold on.... I still have stains on my wall from the first time I read that casting and did a spit take of kool-aid..OH YEAH! Yeah, I know he's actually smart in *real life* and all... but no matter what he's playing, he has that stoned smile going on. In spite of my occasional laughing fits, he actually did a good job and the film is very worth watching. Give it a shot. Serkis? Brilliant. Deserved an Oscar(R).

    by gotilk

CRAP now they have me screwing it up. Yes, fuck you Disney. It was a fun movie. The 3d conversion thing bugged me here and there, but it was one of the better conversions. Still a conversion though, which was a bad choice. Of a long list of bad choices regarding that movie. The casting.... was good. Not great, good. There was a moment when Taylor whatsisname or whatever his name was, actually sounded like he was doing a bad imitation of John Wayne. But that's a nitpick. I enjoyed the hell out of the movie. The second one would have been even better. WOULD have been.

Sorry - have to comment on "Husbands"......

    by MovieManStill

I'm gay. 50. Never had an issue with it, although I grew up in the South. Never bullied. Just a fact. I can't stand "Husbands." I find it precious, annoying, silly and stereotypical. I didn't find "Cheeks" as cute as the panel did, last night, apparently. "Modern Family"? It works. "Husbands"? It simply does not connect with me in any way. Frankly, I find it insulting. Of course, the gay community encompasses men and women of all "types." But this just seems superficial, and eager to please, on the most basic level. (Yes, I watched "Will & Grace," a well-written show - "Jack" succeeds in a way, that "Cheeks" can't.)

Okay... That is weird. My last post ain't all there.

    by L.H.Puttgrass

The subject is fine, but only the last sentence of the comment is there. How does that happen? I don't remember the exact words. It went a little like this: Disney did no one any favors on that movie. I wonder if Disney screwed up the ad campaign so that Stanton would go back to Pixar and make some sequels to his hits. I hear they are getting the ground work going on Finding Nemo 2 and Toy Story 4 among others. I don't want to appear like a conspiracy theorist but there are a lot of sequels coming from Pixar on the horizon. That's not like Pixar. It is a lot like Disney. I smell sumpthin' fishy an' it ain't Nemo. That's it. Not exactly. Just the gist of it. Maybe it will work this time.

Having known a lot of gay people who do not fit ANY of the gay stereotypes out there, it can feel awkward to see nothing BUT the stereotypes portrayed. I bet it's even more frustrating being gay and watching it. I think the writing is damned sharp in Husbands (so far, I've only seen one), but I can see what you mean, completely. I don't know how Modern Family does it, because they are a bit stereotypical (the gay characters), but they get away with it anyway. I think it may be because you can sense the characters slipping in and out of some of the stereotypes depending on the company they're with. I find that fairly realistic. I knew one guy that was waaaay flamboyant around me and my wife and his friends, but in public he practically talked like a 70s DJ, all deep and manly. Pretty funny. Except at Starbucks. You cannot order the *right way* at a Starbucks without sounding effete. Try it. Say *half caff 3 shot iced venti breve Americano* out loud. It just doesn't sound manly no matter how you say it.

"Modern Family" knows how to "twist" the stereotypes...

    by MovieManStill

...and somehow make them non-stereotypical, for lack of a better explanation. "Husbands" makes me want to bang my head against the wall. I don't go to Starbucks. I was forced, over the past twenty years, to conduct too many location scouts with producers, who screeched about their coffee. Our schedule would daily be derailed, until the twats got their Starbucks fix. They never realized just how douche-baggish they were - especially when they used ten descriptive words to order.

l.h.puttgrass -- fun write up on movies of the past 10 years

    by lv_426

I'm glad to see Children of Men on there for 2006. I think if I had to pick my favorite film of the 2000's, then that would be it. I think it might even be good enough to be considered equal to Blade Runner, which is another favorite of mine. Anyways, the past 10 years definitely gave us some good flicks. For me though, the past decade was the one that really woke me up to the fact that TV can be just as awesome as cinema. I was blessed with so many great shows over the past 10-12 years. Band of Brothers The Pacific Breaking Bad Mad Men Battlestar Galactica Rome Deadwood Farscape Weeds Game of Thrones Boardwalk Empire True Blood (guilty pleasure) Star Trek Enterprise (yeah, I know, but I liked it) Kings (fuckin' hoppleheads canceled an Ian McShane series during the first season!!!!!) by lv_426

As a fan of the Apes films, mainly the original from 1968, RotPotA really hit the spot for me. I figured Prometheus was going to be the prequel/relaunch type of film that was going to be the hot ticket, but oddly enough Prometheus just didn't do it for me. No it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't as grand as it could have been. RotPotA on the other hand was a worthy relaunch of the Apes films.

We're in the middle of the best period in TV history for sure. I can't stop watching True Blood either, no matter how silly or stupid it gets. It's just far too entertaining. AND they killed that Meloni guy or whatever his name is from Law and Order. That was fun to watch. Nothing against the guy, I just always hated his character on L&O. I think his acting on True Blood was perfect in fact. Just loved watching him die. His performance as a puddle of chunky goo was impeccable in fact. Just think, they have a guy or gal who is in charge of wrangling that dead vampire gunk. What a job.
