Please Go To A Movie This Weekend
Nordling here.
I can't help thinking about the kids at last night's THE DARK KNIGHT RISES screening in Aurora, Colorado. How excited they must have been - perhaps they were anticipating it all day before loading up into the car and going to the movies. We've all been there. I feel something like that every time I sit down to a new movie, and especially the big ones like this, I always feel like a kid again.
This tragedy has struck the heart of our community. These people are us. Who else goes to midnight screenings but we crazy few movie geeks - yes, even Batman movies - and that excitement is palpable. I wish I could bottle it for the bad days, because it's one of those times in my life where true joy is found. Going to the movies is my favorite thing in the world, other than spending time with my family and friends. It's literally what I live for.
This weekend, go to a movie. No, it's not about keeping the bad guys from winning, or making a statement, although if you want it to be, that's okay. Go to the movies this weekend because it's a joy. One of the last great joys we have left these days, it seems. Plant youself in a theater, and see whatever you fancy. It's the place dreams come true. It's the magic land. That screen isn't a window - it's a door. An inviting door that lets in everyone. All are welcome in that world, and we get to wonder in the power of imagination and beauty.
I don't normally post like this and I'm sorry if this upsets some of you. I'm grieving for the losses in Aurora, Colorado, and I am trying very hard not to play the political games of finding where to put blame. This community took a real loss today, and I mourn those who were killed, pray for the wounded, and celebrate that magic that we all chase every time we sit down in a movie theater. Theaters are my church, and today we're all hurting.
I love movies, and you do too. Let's celebrate them.

Deep sadness as that could easily have been any of us. But I'll be in the theater tomorrow.

I bought my tickets for tonight's showing of TDKR yesterday, and I was pretty excited to do it. And guess what? I'm still excited. Ain't no asshole with a gun taking that away from me.

Um okay. How is this movie related news?

Well Said Nordling... Thoughts to those whose lives were affected...

And people, ignore Harry's ridiculous review of Dark Knight Rises... It's a fine film. Its got issues but its a fine conclusion to this Batman series...
-
Support your right to protect yourself AND your family, and don't let any psychopath anywhere interfere or trivialize your 2nd Amendment rights.
-
Or stay at home, shut in, and pirate it, you miserable fearful shits.
-
That theater is the one I take my kids to. Or was. We'll be finding a new one. If hadn't been working today, I probably would have been there with my 10 year old son. I was planning on seeing it tomorrow morning at that theater. I think we are going to hold off, since it hits so close to home. I'm just hoping none of my kids friends were there.
-
Batman is mine.
-
As a resident of Denver, I'll admit this was awful news to wake up to. Not matter what, I'm not going to live in fear of what "might" happen. I can't or I'd never leave the house. As you've pointed out, movies are one of the last great escapes I have and as much as I bitch about 3D, reboots, etc. its still a magical experience in a dark room with other fans that you can not re-create at home.
-
I'm going today and I can't fucking wait! My heart goes out to everyone! It's just horrible.
-
I struggle these days to take myself to a movie theater. Tragedy aside, and my thoughts go out to everyone involved, such a horrible waste, but on topic, I don't go to the theaters because the theater chains no longer take my experience seriously. People like us, who love going to the movies, who consider it a special, almost sacred place, are being punished because chains like AMC especially pander to the lowest common denominator in hopes of selling just one more ticket or one more bucket of popcorn, instead of allowing the people who want to be there to enjoy the movie the way it was meant to be shown. I went to see Moonrise Kingdom at an AMC the other week, and it was the first time in my life I walked out of a movie. The film literally was not being screened properly (the picture was too large for the screen HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN?), and they showed 35 minutes of trailers, and then sold a guy a ticket ten minutes after the actual film started (last straw). 45 minutes after the film was schedule to begin, 10 minutes into the actual movie, they still sold this guy a ticket and let him come in, disturb everyone, and find a seat with no regards to those of us who actually cared enough to show up on time. I'm lucky I live in L.A., so I can go to Arclight, where at the very least they care. But it's become harder and harder to enjoy going to the theater these days. Between the conditions I mentioned above, to the texting/cell phone plague, I just find it very difficult to have a satisfying theater experience, where I'm not constantly distracted by the assholes around me. And I never go to the theaters on weekends, that's just a rule for me in the last few years. How can anyone stand it? It's like being at the zoo. Film is not treated like an art in most of these places anymore, unless you are seeing a truly artistic, indie movie that the masses don't want to see. (I saw beasts of the southern wild at arc light the other day and it was wonderful, but there 8 people in the theater). I know this rant was a bit unwarranted, but as long as we're talking about it, I just wanted to express my frustration at my feelings that those of us who love the movies the most are the one finding it most difficult to actually enjoy going to the movies. Of course my little complaints are nothing when compared to a tragedy like what happened in Colorado. I can sit and watch my movie and try to ignore the ignoramus' around me if I really, really want to. But I truly plan on waiting as long as my body will allow me before seeing DKR. It'll be the same movie in mid-august, and it'll be a pleasing experience. Maybe I'll go see Moonrise tomorrow since I only saw 10 minutes, I imagine almost no one will be seeing that over DKR, which is one nice thing. Cheers all. I hope everyone here has a better experience than I do at the movies this weekend, and I hope everyone is safe and has a great time.

How we were going to try to encourage people to go to TDKR with us this weekend, then I saw the article. Well said Nordling!

The Joy that I normally get from seeing a movie is just not there for me right now. The whole time I would spend seeing a movie will probably spent thinking about the tragedy!

There aren't a lot of websites that would be willing to ignore the movie news for a second and focus on the real people that are out there hurt and confused and grieving. Thanks for this article; honestly, I don't mind saying that it was really touching to read this, that you guys are thinking of those families that lost their children or parents. I was thinking the same thing about what movies are to us, and the fact that those people went to enjoy something they had been planning for and excited for, before that man forgot how much those audience members' lives mattered.
-
Great article Nordling. Seriously, great article. My feeling exactly.
-
Im off to see dkr tommorrow but i have to say this is the most meaningfull and heartfelt pieces ever written on here and you should be applauded for your kind words

Seems like us Colorado residents need a day or two to process at the least. But I will be there again soon. Not going to let some pathetic nut dictate my life. He's done enough damage already.

So to deal with a tragedy you should disconnect into a world of fantasy? Is'nt that the problem?
by MST3KPIMP
-
Clearly Nordling said that wasn't what his post was about and any attempt to show that "we aren't pussies" is self-sevicing and ignorant, and underscores the whole tragedy.
-
But on the safe side, I'll go see the Matinee showing Tomorrow.
-
because mentally ill people only emerge at night? or are you referring to possibility of a werewolf attack?
-
I'm going out later tonight to see TDKR. There is alot of anger and vitriol going on now regarding this, but as for me, it is upsetting, but I'm not going to get bent out of shape over it. I'll just wait for the facts to come forward, and the reasoning behind why someone would do something like this. Though I can't help but feel that this guy must have wanted attention, given that he chose the opening night of one of the year's most anticipated films. Now the question of course is, "Why?"
-
Hell is may have. We have may have lost a talkbacker and never even know it. Sad times we are in indeed.
-
Okay - sorry. Too soon?
-
is that theaters will disallow midnight screenings or take all the fun out of it by forbidding cosplay.
-
As for this tragedy, one of the women who died in the theatre avoided a similar fate in a mall shooting not so long ago up here in Canada. Seriously fucked up. And yes, I will be going to the theatre to see TDKR this weekend.

don't bring your kids to inappropriate movies at inappropriate times. Reading about the Colorado shooting, I am seeing that a 3 month old and a 6 year old were injured. What the hell were they doing at a midnight show of DKR???

Mostly because I share d o o d's sentiments on the subject. I'd have a hard time enjoying any film in a theater right now, mostly because my thoughts would be wondering to the victims of this senseless bloodshed the whole time.

Eagerly awaiting my hero to come on screen with my friends and family. My deepest condolences go out to all involved in this horrific tragedy. It could have been any one of us, and I hope that this killer gets what is coming to him.
-
So we can learn to pick ourselves up. Thoughts and prayers. Beautiful post man...after this morning it was needed in my house.
-
we should all go to a movie and keep supporting them and not let some crazy idiot stop us. Having said that I disagree with the kid part, Frankly I hate it when I'm at a PG-13 movie and see 7year olds. Any parent who does that sort of thing is an irresponsible parent.
-
Oh shut the fuck up and spare me, please! I am simply angry with this situation, and I fully understood Nordling's article just fine.. Don't insult me with your snarky bull shit. This was an act of terrorism in my eyes, even though it was committed by an American. The act of terrorism is to strike fear in someone, to avoid doing the things we love in order to maintain our safety. Well to that I say bullshit! I have spoken with a lot of folks this morning, and many are simply afraid to go to the movies now.. And seriously, are you saying that these cowards who commit these horrendous acts are anything but "Pussies"... ? In my eyes, that's exactly what the fuck they are. Is this really the talkback to challenge someone on? And, if you would have looked closer to my earlier post, I PRAISED Nordling for this heartfelt and respectful post... Asshole
-
I just took my 3 kids to midnight showing of Avengers and if I could have gotten of work today would have done the same last night for Dark Knight. World is so fucked up now days. Cant imagine what the parents are going thru.
-
You're right. Going this weekend isn't about making a statement. It is about doing something that is awesome, fun, and a shared experience. I hope that is never taken away from me.

I'm having trouble processing this...here are my thoughts
by dead youngling
I don't judge people, but I don't feel like parents should be taking 6 year olds to see a PG-13 movie at midnight. If it comes out that Holmes was impersonating Joker as some reporters have heard inklings of, as just asked to the police chief, what will that do to the soon coming Joker starring dark role in the comics? Yeah he did it for attention and to be remembered...why else? This film is tarnished for me and I planned to see it Sunday.
-
Come on if your gonna post trolling comments at least do it on harrys review rather than a thread about a terrible tragedy, so out of order!
-
We can examine politics of the liberal, independent, or conservative nature. We can examine laws, morals, and social issues. But in the end -- the whack job who did the evil deed is the most responsible party. He made a conscious decision to do a heinous thing. He did a thing illegal, immoral, an unconscionable. And because of that, more than anything, the lives of innocents have been forever altered. It is truly a sad day.

I bet the house movie theaters will start TSA style behaviors and ban costumes to showings. And rightfully so... Sadly

I caught a midnight Marathon of all 3 Nolan Batman movies last night/this morning - a fantastic experience and really enjoyed all 3 movies. Yes TDKR has its flaws but I strongly disagree with Harry's take on the film. Maybe Harry has an idea in his head of what Batman should be? but I went to see Nolan's Batman, and getting to watch all 3 films in order on the big screen was a privilege and great fun.
-
I'm tired of hearing this horseshit cliche everytime a tragedy happens. Because it's fairly obvious neither worked. Maybe our thoughts should be what in the greater Denver area produces young white guys with the deadly combination of undiagnosed schizophrenia and an inability to deal with adversity (he dropped out of medical school last week).
-
My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims.
-
but maybe the fact that you describe it as a "joy" is part of the problem. Shouldn't the word joy be reserved for more personal, intimate moments in life? Going to the movies, sorry I wouldn't use the word joy. Especially not for a Dark Knight movie. This shooter probably felt very disconnected from people which allowed him to do what he did. If you're finding your "joy" in movies, video games, television and music you're part of the problem. You need to get out more and have a life.
-
I loathe the media.
-
71!!!!! We need tougher gun control in this country. I own guns and have been around them all my life. But no one needs to own a AR-15 assault rifle. You can not give me one logical reason as to why a private citizen needs to own one. I know there are people who don't agree with me and that is your right. People should be able to own guns. but there needs to be a limit on what you can and can't buy.

by magnetoelectric
Conscious would imply that the party is "aware". All the more reason why we need stricter gun control. People who are unaware or insensitive to their own existence, sensations, thoughts & surroundings, and yours, are armed with machineguns.
-
It seems that you post this venom possibly for the same reason this maniac open fired in a crowded theatre.... NO GET ATTENTION. You post harsh words and then sit back and await the feedback. I see this so much on this website and it's sad. Show some decency and keep the bullshit negative comments to yourselves. NO ONE wants to read them and you're only showing how petty you truly are. My thoughts, prayers and condolences to those who lost their lives or were injured and their families. Nord: Awesome post. Well thought out and heartfelt. Thanks.

so now you can't even drop your kids off at the Batman movie they've been waiting to see without this sort of thing happening? This makes me sick. Those poor people.
-
More than ever we should keep going to the movies; the one place where there has to be snakes, where the Force is with us, and Oz does exist.
-
Thanks. I found it right after I posted the question. As for gun control: I don't know how that would have helped in this case. We don't know where this fool bought his guns or if they were legal. And, the man had no criminal history outside of a single speeding ticket. While stricter gun laws might have prevented a person with a history of mental or legal problems from making a purchase, this was a guy in medical school with a Master's degree in Neuroscience. Interestingly... I am hearing reports that the guy had his hair painted "red" and claimed to be the Joker. I don't remember that the Joker even had red hair. However, the theater shooter in the DARK KNIGHT RETURNS comic had red hair.

I can't enjoy a lot theater movies mainly because of all the random punks who open up their huge mouths. Or check their phones during the movie. Bad guys have already won, and people allow this old harassment to continue. Now we have a new bad guy to worry about in movie theaters. So why should i have to even bother wasting money on a experience that cause frustration and anxiety for some?
-
So what are you doing to deal with society's ills? Are you actively doing ANYTHING outside of being a snarky fuck on an internet forum? Are you contributing in ANY way? Maybe you can enlighten those of us who aren't immediately affected by this tragedy as to what we all should do this weekend to fix things.

Nordling, I live in Denver and went to see TDKR IMAX at 9 this morning.
by Dakotan25
The crowd was very aware of the shooting earlier this morning. In line we discussed the shooting and all expressed sympathy toward the victims and their families. I can't speak for everyone else, but I wasn't about to throw away the tickets I bought 3 days ago for myself and my 7 year old son, out of fear. Never.
-
How many more dead would there be if half the audience started simultaneously shooting at this wacko? Maybe someone gets off a lucky shot and takes out the shooter, but there could easily have been just as many dead and wounded by the friendly fire and, by the way, there were reports of bullets reaching adjacent theaters through the walls. Increase the number of rounds flying through the air and you increase the number of chances someone next door is wounded. Whatever your problem, more guns in the hands of bystanders is rarely the solution.

Am I the only adult who thinks kids should be in bed at midnight?
by MisterBlue
Instead of at a midnight showing? I mean this with DEEP respect to the families, and I don't intend to upset people here, but I wouldn't take my kids to a midnight showing until 13+, and even then it would have to be a more friendly movie than the Dark Knight Rises (which I intend to see this weekend with the guys). I've heard today on the radio that there was an infant at this showing - really? That seems to me wrong in so many ways. And by the way, making this a political thing is about the most vile thing anyone can do (Piers Morgan, are you listening?). Listen to any one of the conservative talk shows this morning and they are all condemning this horrible event. People who do this are way fringe, and lumping a whole group in it is just very wrong and irresponsible.
-
and live your life freely.

Nordling, your piece pretty much said it all. Though I can't forget the very recent tragedy, I won't let it stop me from living. I am scheduled to see "The Dark Knight Rises" tonight. For those 2+ hours that the lights dim, I hope to escape from the problems of the day and get lost in the story of a childhood hero: A respite, if only for a few hours.

Seeing TDKR tomorrow morning, and it will be the last time I EVER go to a theatre to see a film again
by Kremzeek
And I absolutely mean that. I'll share an email I sent out to my family and friends: After the shootings last night at the "Dark Knight Rises" premiere, I've decided once and for all this world has become too evil for me. I'm sad to say, tomorrow's screening will be the absolute last time I go to the movies. At first, it was the constant disregard for courtesy to other people who've bought tickets to the film. But now I've got to wonder if I'm going to get shot too? Nope. Sorry, I'm done. I mean, this just SICKENS me. I have no words. Here we have an audience who've been waiting excitedly for 4 years to see the end of Nolan's Batman trilogy... and they get killed for it? I just can't take this stuff any more. I understand I can get shot just walking down the street. I also understand we can't live our lives in continual fear. However, I also agree with something I was taught all my life: If you can avoid a situation, then do it. Why put yourself in a place where the problem (either sin or, as in this case, danger) can happen at all? I am deeply horrified, saddened, and hurt over the loss of these lives - especially in this kind of scenario. It's getting to be where nobody can do anything without the wonder of being shot to death by a random, angry stranger. I'm done. Just wanted my usual "movie-attending crew" to be aware. From now on, I'll just wait for Blu-ray or Netflix.
-
movie patrons get shot in an "urban" area, people forget, people get shot in a little "White" town it's a fucking national tragedy. Funny i always seem to see patrol cars out in the "urban" movie theaters but never see them in manhatten. Double standard much?

I know us Brits and you Yanks don't always see eye to eye, bu believe me, we're right there with you and thinking of all the victims. Unbelievable. RIP.

krenzeek, you realize that this is just an isolated incident, right?
by Ian Masterson
Not trying to detract from the tragedy or change your mind, but still...
-
Among other things, this kind of crime highlights the absurdity of “security theater” – the almost wholly symbolic rigmarole to which Americans subject ourselves in a few symbolic places, such as airports, government buildings and the like. Anybody in this country who wants to kill a lot of people in a crowded public space can do so fairly easily. The fact this almost never happens – and that when it does happen the act almost never has a political motive – indicates how wildly overstated the threat of terrorism is in America today. If we faced any kind of real terrorist threat, incidents like the Aurora shooting (except with a political motive) would happen all the time, since, again, there’s nothing that can be done to stop them. That they don’t illustrates the extent to which “terrorism” is a politically useful bogeyman, deployed by the national security state for reasons that have almost nothing to with actual considerations of public safety and everything to do with cultivating a sufficiently fearful and docile populace. Indeed, leaving aside considerations of terrorism altogether, the surprising thing about the Aurora shooting is that incidents of this type don’t happen more often. We live in a (compared to the rest of the developed world) extraordinarily violent, deeply economically stratified nation, with more than 270 million guns floating around – enough to arm every adult and half the kids in the nation
-
Guns don't automatically help situations like this. Dark theater, thick smoke in the air, people moving back and forth from exits. Say there were other people in the theater with guns. People with different levels of skill, experience, judgment, emotion, and understanding of what the heck was going on. Say any of those people tried to fire at the criminal. They might miss, there might be ricochets or bullets going through objects into hidden people. Once a shot is fired, they have the criminal's attention. So then they become his targets, and as a result, everyone around them too - the criminal will fire back at the area of the "good guy" shooter, putting everyone in that direction at increased risk - in the name of "protecting the innocent", a "good guy" is now deciding who will be placed at maximum risk that might not be otherwise. And since the criminal was wearing Kevlar, he most likely isn't going down easily. So this could go on for a while. And in that dark, crazy setting, who's to know who's "good" and "bad"? A second, maybe a third person starts shooting - who is who? Which one should we be running from? Massive likelihood of extra death and damage from people going the wrong way, caught in the crossfire, picking the wrong person to either look to for help or attack. Then the cops arrive, and there are three, four shooters in the room. How does that get resolved? A lot of immature people may fantasize that it'd be like their first-person-shooter game of choice. But it isn't. It's damn complicated and far from clean. People like to think that a gun can "solve" things like this. But we have lots of guns, and it keeps happening. The root causes are where the only real solution lies, and guns are completely impotent there. Admit that, and we'll be on or way to progress.

Do you not see how much more frequent these things have become in the last 15 years or so? Now, I can't even go to a fucking movie without wondering if my son and I are gonna be gunned down? Nope. Fuck that. I was already on the path to skipping the theatres due to cell phones, texting, and all that shit. So, this is the straw. I'm done. I don't trust anyone anywhere anymore. And I hate that. Well said Nord, but what's politics got to do with it?
by ShakaLaka Lambo
Besides ABC's extremely biased and retarded reporting this morning that "there is a Jim Holmes that has a tea party web site" there is no proof that it was the same dude. As a matter of fact we know now that it wasn't. But what does that matter? Right? Any chance to use a tragedy to further your communist agenda right? My thoughts and my prayers are with the families . Yep, I said Prayers. I must be one of those crazy right wingers that clings to his bible and his gun. Great sentiments Nordling - well done for posting them.
-
I definitely agree with the spirit of your article. BUT... That's just it... It SHOULD be a FUN experience to go. And, yeah, sure this isn't a common occurence in theatres... YET. At first it was "just an isolated school shooting"... and now it happens on a regular basis. I'm not going to invite myself to be one of the next victims. Esepcially when even huge blockbuster films are being released on disc within about 3-4 months. That's nothing. I can wait. I'm patient.
-
I'm sad to say, tomorrow's screening will be the absolute last time I go to the movies. At first, it was the constant disregard for courtesy to other people who've bought tickets to the film. But now I've got to wonder if I'm going to get shot too? Nope. Sorry, I'm done.

What about home invasions? Those happen all the time. They are atleast as common as you make out school shootings to be. By stating you will stay at home you are playing right into the big-evil-world's hands.

I can agree with that, to a point. The weapons we have now to hurt one another are the deadliest, and most easily accessible they've ever been though. So, that *is* a difference.

I can be fairly "cold" about a lot of things, but today's events really bother me more than I care to admit. I've been a movie freak since I was a kid and have found sanctuary in movies many a time. I've even attended a midnight premier here and there. The theater was my escape, and these people I feel were much the same. To paraphrase George Takei, these were fans of science fiction and fantasy, dreamers that stood first in line to be inspired and to escape. All i am saying is if that guy didn't have a assault rifle. Maybe instead of 71 shot 12 killed. It could have been 40 shot 5 killed. No one needs these weapons outside of the military or police. What if he could only get a hand gun that was revolver. 6 shots tops before he reloads. not something that holds 20 rounds. the death toll changes dramatically. I know we will never stop gun related violence but we can change it's effect for sure.

Not to the extent of blaming, but this does make me think about movie ratings, parental choices, and theater rules.
by kevred
A disclaimer first: the only person that deserves direct blame in this incident is the murderer. No victims deserved or should have in any way expected this. But this does make me think about some other things that may sound like blame - but aren't, hence the disclaimer - but are important. - Why is such a dark film, full of murder and mayhem and grim, bleak world-view concepts, a PG-13 film? Over time I've come to see PG-13 as the ruination of good cinema and even cinema culture. The original ratings existed to inform and even control, but with higher motives. The only motive of PG-13 is cash. It's a shortcut, a cheat, a way for the studios to get away with things. It doesn't really tell you anything useful about what's in a film, beyond saying, "this should really be rated R, but since we want to make more money, it's not." - Why are parents taking small children to a film like this? Yes, it's comic-book film, but this is not a film for little kids. A 3-month-old, 3-year-old at this film? They can't understand it. It would be full of scary monsters and people in danger, and as a father of a 3-year-old, I can tell you that does not play well, and if you think it does, you're fooling yourself. Between the rating and the bad parental choices, how many kids are now injured and traumatized, maybe for life, who would otherwise be protected? It's not their fault, but the outcome would be different if different standards were in place. There are other related choices. Christopher Nolan's choice to make an "adult" film about a comic character. A studio's choice to cram violence and darkness into a universally-viewable rating so it could make more filthy lucre. And theaters' choices, letting in as many people as possible, even though they can see bad choices being made. No one deserves blame for this crime but the shooter. But a lot of choices affect the outcome of situations like this one, and if things like this are ever going to stop or get better, we sure as heck need to consider the wisdom of what we're doing and why we're doing it. We've let our imaginative play become muddied, corrupted, short-cutted, and poisoned with adult neuroses and avarice. That shows a lack of respect and honor for those of us who are most vulnerable and most affected by what our increasingly apathetic, lazy culture of entertainment production and consumption lets slide. We need higher standards, and we need to be very serious about safeguarding what we pull our kids into. This is a freakish situation, but everything is connected. They're depending on us.

It is always tragic when evil attacks people who are simply living. Whether it is kids in school, employees going to work (as happened in Edgewater Wakefield MA near here), people getting a bite to eat in a restaurant, people attending church (the one with the steeple, not yours Nordling), people at a political speech or the dozens of other places attacked over the past several years. The answer is never to hide or evil wins. Our movies have taught us that lesson. The answer is to continue. We will mourn those lost and pray that the evil is punished but the only answer is to continue. Thanks again Nordling. And I will see you all at the movies...

Because this guy saying 'I'm the JOKER! DERP DERP DERP!' will bring back the Tipper Gore style censorship hordes pretty quick. By tomorrow, this will all be Nolan's fault. Just a prediction.
-
If everybody walked around with a sidearm, that guy may have thought twice about walking in and opening fire. I think the fear of being shot back could be very influential in preventing these kinds of attacks. It would not have been a shoot-out, as he describes. It would not have happened at all.

I will say we will never know how much pull this movie initially had
by MST3KPIMP
The "pull" just doubled. This is what will happen. The movie will now receive more attention and box office because of the media pumping the fear. Then to deal with said fear people that were on the fence about seeing it on thursday will run to theaters so they can feel brave and be a part of some "happening". They will be strangely excited by the perverse nature of the film's themes and violence all the while imagining some gunmen storming into they're screening which will give the movie more substance than it deserves. This insane act has made this movie the current cultural zeitgeist. I wouldn't be surprised if a conspiracy theory emerged linking the shooter with WB in some outrageous attempt to drum up box office.

... because of our failure to eliminate the sale of assault rifles. We can have guns and be smart about it. There is no reason for automatic weapons with high volume clips. I was was waiting for someone to use the standard NRA line that if there were a few more people with guns in that theater, less people would have died - so stupid & wrong on so many levels. If you were in that theater and opened fire likely you not stopped this lunatic as he had protective armor on. Do we need to do that too?

Just got back. Initial impressions: WOW. Duly impressed. EPIC scale. THE SCRIPT. Oscar nom for screenplay guaranteed.
by justmyluck
I'll get this out of the way first: definitely a much bigger story, and TDKR has some telltale, MASSIVE, editorial shuffling and reshuffling going on at the 2/3 point to keep it under three hours. Unfortunately, this goes on for about 15-20 minutes and quickly pulls the wind out of every plot, B-plot and character-specific goings-on in order to hurry everything along. TDKR does get its legs back in a huge way and is absolutely as absorbing during the finale as it is up to that 2/3 point. I will patiently keep repeating the *rise* chant in the hopes the Nolans work on a much needed extended cut, perhaps for theatrical re-release, definitely for Blu-ray. I'll want to comment later once I've RECOVERED, and I mean that in the best way. i LOVED this. It felt bigger than a James Cameron project - hands on, big studio work with a firm hand and assured stride. Capone called it bloat — it's not — trimming TDKR's waistline line let too many threads hang out, leaving the production and plot mechanics dangling out for a while. That's easily forgiven for this *run* of TDKR. So many parts of this film made me feel absolute bliss. Christopher and Jonathan Nolan, thank you! Merci! Yes, go this weekend if you were planning to — fear is the mind killer!

....the franchise, movies in general and of course other media (video games as usual) !!!!! Plus they were discussing how this guy will be remembered as the Batman Killer and that is what he'll want and they kept refering to him as this throughout the reports! All the time I'm thinking ONLY if you keep refeing to him like that!!!!! Why are these killers always called evil too? Sure, some may be but surely if someone is derranged or mentally ill then they are ick (in a medical sense). Genuine question to my American friends - I thought that Church and State are supposed to remain seperate, why then do Presidents always say God bless America? I ask as I saw Obama's speech about this awful incident and God and prayers were mentioned a few times. Would an Atheist or Agnostic ever be elected President? Surely not every politician believes in God? Again, thoughts with those affected. Let's go to the movies Peace

Too bad nobody was able to pop this fucker in the face before the cops came. Agreed with the gentleman who said Assault Rifles should not be available to the general public.... I'm not some gun nut, never owned one myself. But the thought of being trapped in a theater while a crazy asshole takes free shots at me and my family, frightens me. If more people were able to defend themselves, these fuckers wouldn't have such an easy time of it. I know, I know --- Wild West, eye-for-an-eye, fastest-draw wins, isn't the way to go either... reality sucks and there is no perfect answer. But fuck me if anyone thinks I'm not going to defend myself and my loved ones against these crazy bastards. Kids laying dead in a theater... No words to describe what a tragedy this is. I wish somebody in that theater was in a position to stop that 'person' before he was able to do so much goddamn damage, that's all.

BTW: Sending your kid to school is an entirely different scenario
by Kremzeek
Kids need to (and are required to) go to school. The same cannot be said for going to the movies. The movies are a pasttime, a fun diversion from real life (even the serious crime dramas like the Bats trilogy). No one is required to go. Back a few years ago, it would've been tougher for me to stop going to the theatres. But even HUGE blockbusters like Avengers are released on disc within 3 months! THREE MONTHS! Truly, that's nothing. It's almost silly. So, I'll just wait. Sending your kids to school and going to the movies are not a good analogy at all. But... sorry, I'm getting off-topic again. Huh. Let's get a popcorn refill before the film starts.

The people who go through the proper legal channels and have the necessary training to receive a license to carry are not the problem here. Criminals and the emotionally and mentally unstable who want to perpetrate violent crimes are. A motivated person WILL gain access to illegal firearms if they so choose to. Separation of Church and State is not a part of the U.S. Constitution or the Declaration of Independence. It was part of a letter by Thomas Jefferson, and was written in reference to the King's hold over the Church of England. It was not meant to prevent Christian values from influencing policy, nor was it meant to prevent government officials from discussing issues in a religious context. I love movies, but HATE theaters in their current state.
by Erik Radvon
The average American movie theater SUCKS these days. Top-notch, name-brand chain theaters with big city presences like AMC and Regal are doing an absolutely terrible job when it comes to customer service. How many hundreds of people gather for these midnight showings, with ZERO security staff on hand? The showing I went to was a madhouse, and I'm surprised somebody didn't get hurt. Theaters need to get their act together before I shed a tear for their industry. They are obviously running costs as low as possible to maximize profits, and theater goers are the ones who suffer.

And of course that is obvious, as almost anything I could say right now would be. But this hits home for me. Because these people were us, and because I have been friends with a large number of fellow geeks/nerds/fanfolk in Aurora, CO. One of them lives elsewhere now and is a successful writer, and I know she has many friends in that area. I'm concerned and frightened for them right now. I'm concerned for others who I have lost contact with over the years. And I'm concerned for those I never knew... and never will. Really, I'm not even sure why I'm posting except that I'm so pissed right now, and so sad. And I already have a parent in the hospital, getting better but still in the hospital. I just have to vent I guess. The important thing I want to say is that I'm never going to stop going to the movies. Now, more than ever. Yes, I'm bothered by people so tethered to their security-blanket little devices that they completely disregard everyone around them so that they don't miss out on being mentioned in a tweet, or texted. Members of my own family do this, and it's bad. There are people in my own family that I refuse to go to movies with now. They can't leave their phone at home, in the car, anywhere... for even 2 hours. Ever. One even sleeps with her phone. I love gadgets and computers and social media as much as anyone, but I know where to draw the line. THAT reason alone was enough for me to almost decide to stop going to movies in the cinema. But now.... NOW I have to keep going. Because this pisses me off, and I'm not going to be scared away from going. I'm scared enough already, of taking a walk in my neighborhood because of a LARGE number of loose animals, including almost exclusively pit bulls that are being cared for badly by meth-head owners who just don't give a crap... or even maybe think it's hilarious. I'm scared of walking around in the midtown area I love in my city at night now because of personal experience (someone attempted to rob me and some friends at shotgun-point a while back) and because the pseudo-gangstas have taken over. (this isn't about race, by the way... these people are mostly white that I'm coming into contact with, so don't misunderstand) People get in shouting matches at every corner, in stores and clubs, even coffee houses that are normally filled to the brim with oddly annoying but harmless hipsters ... who have been run off for the most part.... How do you like hipsters now that they've been replaced with gang-member wannabees and mentally ill meth addicts arguing with each other loudly, publicly, as if it were as natural as breathing?? People who have grown up with reality TV and Springer, and assume that's just the way people interact. It's sad, but it's also impossible to tolerate. It ruins every place that used to be comfortable. Yeah.. uh-huh hipsters are starting to look more attractive every minute now. I don't know what it's like where you live, but I hope it's nothing like it is here. It's as if a Wal-Mart turned into a giant squid-beast and vomited the trashiest people in it right smack-dab into the middle of my town. Pre-intoxicated, paranoid and loud. But the cinema is like our church! It's sacred. We can't let one person ruin it, no matter how horrific his aftermath. I'm no *tough guy*, not even on the Internet. But you know what? FUCK this. FUCK THIS! I'm going to a movie. Tomorrow. Alone. We can't let this ruin it. I have a lot more to say about it, but I just don't feel like it's the right time. I'll save it for later. I don't want to press any buttons, or offend anyone right now. I don't have the energy to fight it. I'll just ask that you don't let this ruin it for you. Grieve, help out when there's a way to do so, but then get back to living your life the way you want to. Those people were there at a midnight screening. They're US. I think, in a way, we kind of owe it to them. *still in shock*

Just back from a 5pm showing of TDKR here in uk, we had a minutes silence before the movie and at the end everyone was applauding the movie & eachother....
by cameron
....strangers in a movie theater side by side sharing a movie is about the only time we feel any connection, laughing and cheering, when the lights go up we all go our seperate ways, if only we could retain that sense of friendliness once the lights go up and we go outside. The movie theater is a magical place for a few hours, it's not just the movies that are magical it's us too, we just never seem to believe it for long. My thoughts are with the families of the victims now starting the rest of their lives with this terrible burden. No doubt someone will call me a dick or asshole somewhere, but being nasty just doesn't seem funny anymore.
-
It wasn't the trailers or leaked footage of TDKR that seet him off - it was Harry's negative (due to lack of set visits and freebies!) review of the film that should be blamed!
-
ok but if i decide tomorrow. I want to shoot up a store full people. I would only have access to the guns I have access to. Which would be at any local gun store. What if i could not buy a AR-15? what if my only option was a hunting rifle. I would do alot less damage and have a harder time killing people. because UI am limited in ammo. I can only shoot 6 shots instead of 30 before reloading. people are still going to get guns to kill people but we can make it harder for them to kill more people.
-
leaving for the IMAX showing in a few minutes...like the guy who's bagging going to cinemas for good after this, I was getting fed up with all the disruptive assholes who've tainted every premiere I've gone to the last few years - constant texters, people arguing over seats, talkers, walkers(people who can't stay seated for 2 hours and feel the need to get snacks in the middle of the movie, not old folk). I'm getting there two hours early. I'll probably get a decent seat. I won't leave it when the lights go down. Or talk to my buddies until after the credits rolled. All these gripes seem trivial today.
-
I had not noticed that.

My wife bought tickets for this for Sat night...
by Melanie Griffiths Sour Patch
...and right now I feel sick inside & the last thing I want to do is go to a movie. It feels like I'm trivializing what happened to those poor people. It feels shitty. I've had incidents in movie theaters. I got into a fight with 2 teens who were using their phones to play music out loud during Watchmen and I had stopped going to movies in theaters. This summer, I decided to go back and my experiences at Avengers, Prometheus and Moonrise Kingdom were all excellent. That being said, this news today makes me feel horrible about using our tickets tomorrow. There's like a shame attached to it for me right now. I don't know what I'm going to do, but I'm praying for the families for those poor people who lost their lives going to a movie. Think about that for a second. They lost their lives for going to see a movie. What the fuck is wrong with this world?
-
1) Those incidents in the past decades have always inspired copycats hoping they will be interviewed on TV as "the Joker" or whatever. So this weekend, there could be some sick fuck that wants to do out too, in ANY film. 2) Warner Brothers now has one record: Most mass killings linked to it's films. The Colombine shooters said they were inspired by the Morpheus rescue scene in THE MATRIX (a fact that WB and Joel Silver spent a LOT of money trying to keep out of the stories, blaming it on THE BASKETBALL DIARIES) I agree with the person who said go for a walk in the sun, take your kids out and be glad they're ALIVE. Talk to them, find out what's bothering them. Running into dark room and hiding from life is probably a big part of why these things happen. Parents TEXT their children who are locked upstairs on the internet. Maybe this is a wakeup call. Get BACK into the real world.
-
On vacation as of 55 minutes ago and seeing Dark Knight Rises was the only thing I managed to plan. I'm just hoping for a morning show during the week. Maybe bring along some earplugs 'cause I'M NOT FREAKING DEAF (yet!).
-
No fucking kidding. Someone could've said, "Actually, when Batman first appeared in the 1930s the comic was dark, gritty, and violent for its time." Also, the fucking storyline for this movie stems from one from the ultra peaceful (sarcasm) 1990's. Ugh... The news has failed us, our Government has failed us... I just want the world to end now.
-
still going on about this? simply because it happened in a cinema? stop giving this maniac's exploits any more webspace, guys. if it happened in the kfc down the road it wouldn't even get a mention on here. i'll be waiting for the first decent cam copy to come out, hopefully tomorrow. like always.
-
so he used the opening of this film to execute his plan. It could have been a concert but security would have made it difficult, it could have been a theater showing Madea's witness protection but nobody went to see that shit so he picked the one that made more sense to him to harm a lot of people. Its a shame.
-
i think this is going to be happening everywhere which is going to ultimately attract more viewers than would have otherwise gone. how ironic

@drstrangerlove: "The movie theater is a magical place for a few hours"
by Kremzeek
I used to agree. But it's just not true anymore - unless you're at a premiere of course (which might be what you were exclusivley referring to). In the last 10-15 years or so, the only time I've ever experienced an audience cheering and all that good stuff was at a premiere. And even then it's lackluster compared to when I saw, for example, Batman 89. That audience went nuts at everything! It was great! Those days are long, long gone, I'm afraid. When I think of the theatres (before the Batman tragedy last night), my first thought is usually, "Yeah, but I'm just going to be wondering who I'm gonna need to yell at to get off their damn phone or quit kicking my seat and talking, etc the whole time." It hasn't been "fun" in a long time - at least not here in Northern California.

Actually I think it was more like. Hey god this is the devil. Can you hear me from the inside of that trunk I stuffed you in? Mfffphh? I'll take that as a yes. Well ya see
by UltraTron
God I got this lil problem. Seems that I liked it better when you weren't stuffed in this car's trunk. There used to be some back-n-forth. Things are just too one sided nowadays. Here's a perfect example. I just watched the original star wars. Well the first time I watched this human creation there were not 6 nuclear power plants in this state. Now thanks to you being stuffed in this trunk(props to my boy Beelzebub for that bang up job- he deserves all the credit-anyways) there are now 6 nuke plants needed it seems to power this same movie now. Not sure why by damn I love it when they break. Hell I didn't even have to do much for those wonderful instruments of total destruction of the entire nation and possibly world if any one of them should ever break. Every state saw fit to stick 5 or 6 of them in their most populated areas.

WHAT IF SOME KID, WAS ORPHANED, FROM THIS INCIDENT? Sound familiar?

Like most of the fat twits on this site I was bullied in HS. It was part of being in HS. BUt unlike the Columbine boys, I didn't take a gun and shoot anyone, not because it was against the law, but because I KNEW IT WAS WRONG. Got that? Part of school and homelike was teaching you MORAL. That shhit has been cut out of school and our society -- we can do anything we want as long as it FEELS good -- and this lunatic is just the latest example. We're raising a society of Sociopaths. We worship bad behavior on the Kardashian shows and everything else. In england, they don't reveal the name of the suspect because he DOESN"T deserve fame or infamy -- just a speedy trial and in this case, execution Yeah, also going to the movies used to be fun. When Terminator 2 came out, when the lights came up in the Universal Citywalk theater, the Bloods and Crips realized they were both in the theater and started shooting. I NEVER go to that theater even though its been decades.

by v3d
Cell phones. Babies. Assholes who talk through the whole thing. Bad projection. Sticky floors and seats. Glowing screens of texters. Price gouging at the concession stand. No, going out to a movie and paying up to $50 for two people is a lot of things, but "a joy" it isn't.

They obviously couldn't get a babysitter and really wanted to see the film. Having kids, as awesome as it is, makes movie going very tricky.

..I think his name is Professor Wilson, he's really trying to up his media profile at the moment to publicise his TV show and book. His TV show btw, is a horrible piece of "investigation" in which he tries to connect unsolved murders to serial killers here in the uk that have been caught. The Robert Black episode was in incredibly poor taste.

@yourmomsbox3d: I'm sorry you feel that way about my posts. Guess you should've read them, but that's ok
by Kremzeek
See... I've been looking forward to this movie for 4 years, like we all have. I already bought tickets and am having a Bats marathon for the first 2 films at my house tonight. In the spirit of Nordling's post: Fuck the people trying to ruin this for us! Let's have a good time anyway! As I said, I *like* that attitiude. Unfortunately, over the last few years, the enjoyment I find in going to the theaters has steadily been declining as audiences become more selfish and downright disruptive. So, I've been inching closer and closer to not going altogether for a while now. This horrible tragedy just clenches it for me. I'm done after this last Bats film. If you need my whole life story to get a better idea of where I'm coming from I can provide that. In the meantime, I recommend you stop jumping to conclusions about people based on a few posts on AICN.
-
up to this on the news. This whole event reminds me of the shooting that took fans lives and the life of Darrell "Dimebag" Abbott on Dec, 8 2004. I'm speechless. It's just terribly sad. I can't imagine what those victims and their families are going through.

What people are forgetting is that this was not an act of terrorism. This guy was a wacko. A craxy. One sick mf-er. No seriously. As with all of the shooters of the past or even the people whio decide to blow up or drown their kids. What we are dealing with people are the tragic consequences of unchecked mental illness. Whatever this guys problem was. IE: Depression, bi-polar, personality disorder, schizophrenia. ... The sad fact is that this kind of thing is on the rise in america, if not the world. Whether it be a result of chemicals in the food, the social and environmental effects of a poor economy, overpopulation, etc. Heck, even people who claim to have a polical, religious ot terrorist agenda whio do these things are not quite right in the head to go to the exremes they do to begin with. It's mental illness and people need start taking this subject seruiously. The fact of the mater is, don't be afraid of going to the movies or anywhere else. Your cousin, aunt, uncle, brother or sister can go off the deep end and shoot you at a family reunion if they are ill and don't have treatment. Its a shame its only the SHOOTINGS that get put on the news. Tragedy like this strikes every day much closer to home and in just as sinister ways. Its all the same root cause. These people are not evil. They are ill. Im glad we gont one alive for once so that maybe some insite can be gained on this mater.

Just saying that if a few people had weapons, this nutfuck wouldn't have had a free shooting gallery to line up. He would have been ducking for cover, etc. I'm no expert, but I don't know just how bullet-proof neck gear and helmets are if it gets hit with 10mm bullet. Sure would cause some cobwebs at the very least, this isn't an Iron Man movie we're talking about. Not trying to sound tough --- Just grieving for these poor people, and wish somebody there had a chance to at least slow him down. As it stands now, I don't own a firearm, and would be in the same powerless position as everyone else in that theater. Just trying to make it clear that this isn't a "If I was there..." type of j/o post.

How much you wanna bet they pull that movie theatre/shootout sequence from Gangster Squad.
by Jarrete Barnett
I was about to post something else, but that thought just dawned on me. Seems typical to cop-out and blame entertainment, especially movies like The Dark Knight Rises, that have NOTHING to do with mass shooting sprees of innocent... but it's definitely the movie... must be. Entertainment and Hollywood has always been the scapegoat for sick people, long before Columbine, and "experts" continually enable that half-ass notion.

Double standard much?* In case you didn't know, this is the largest mass shooting this country has experienced. And you want to go and throw *race* into the discussion? That speaks volumes as to what an asshat you are. There were whites, blacks, asians, hispanics, etc...in there.
-
To think that so many lives were taken by the hands of some crazed monster is nauseating. May the deceased rest in peace. My heart goes out to the victims of this tragedy and their families.
-
Nice. But you can do both. We get it. You don't like violence. And do what you want. But I think a much bigger problem than violence in movies/tv right now is the epidemic of people who either cannot or refuse to put ANY fictional violence into context when discussing it. That, and unrealistic depictions that give people a false impression of... say... what happens when a bullet enters the human body. Soften it up, make it survivable when it isn't... and you're basically lying to the public. I'd prefer any kid of mine (within reason, age-wise) see a realistic aftermath of violence than some *softened* depiction. And in the context of a STORY with a MESSAGE about how those violent people are BAD. Context. It IS important, even though right about now, every newsroom in America is ignoring that context exists. In many cases, knowing full well how stupid, unfair, and un-constructive it is. They will say they want to *understand*, but then ignore context and LEARN NOTHING. The lesson at the end of all this will be something along the lines of *evil guy* and the blame will be placed (by many) squarely on some movie, or all of entertainment. And some people will not question it, because questioning it would take time, attention, thought. It's much easier to listen to Mr newsman tell you what to blame. And do you honestly think that realistic (or even heightened) violence in a movie is worse than how reality TV depicts human relationships? Or the way some talk shows represent interactions between people? I think an entire generation has grown up thinking rudeness, insensitivity, plotting against people, paranoia and a heightened sense of fear over what others think is the way normal human beings interact. That conflict and drama should be sought out or created at every opportunity. Does a person who only thinks of themselves pose a greater risk to the general public than a crazy person who thinks he's the Joker? Well, I think so. Mostly because the Joker guy is one in a million. That other kind of person is THE NORM NOW. And sometimes, I think those selfish people help CREATE the crazy ones. So maybe a day with your kid IS a better solution, after all. The nice thing about days is that they have 24 hours in them, which leaves time for both things. A nice day with your kid, and a visit to the theater to see the movie he or she wants to see so badly. But if the kid comes away from a movie like one of the Batman movies identifying with the villain more than the hero, it's time to have a talk. But I just hope the talk is not about how the violence in the movie was too extreme. I hope instead it will be about why Batman is the hero, doesn't USE guns, and how or why the ones who *just want to watch the world burn* are the bad guys. THAT is the discussion that people should be having. Not the one that involves blaming a movie without a decent explanation as to how you came to that conclusion. Because that's usually what happens. And most of those *critics* never even watch the movies they criticize. And people let them get away with it. In the audience, and in the studios where they produce *news*. ** news=usually hype and not much else. I hope your day with your kid is nice, no matter what you choose to do. And if you don't like movies that feature violence, great. Your choice. But don't expect people to read what you wrote and have nothing to say about it. Because there was HUGE subtext there.

...this is only going to hype the movie even more - just like Ledger's death did with the previous one and generate more interest and revenue for it. Sincere condolences to the families of the deceased, but what kind of pathetic moron, brings a four month old baby to a midnight screening? That person needs a slap to the fucking head!

This man had no criminal record other than a speeding ticket. He had no record of psychological issues. He was a Ph.D. student who had recently earned a Master's degree in Neurobiology. He did not use a gun that is targeted by anti-gun groups. This man was a psycho and few people knew it. Even with stricter gun reform laws, it wouldn't have made a difference in this case.

I have no beef with people or their Gods though it does rile me a little when people say things like 'I'm sure all our prayers are with the victims. God bless them' as if they speak for everyone. People can have empathy and feelings without praying! It's creeping into British politics to. Mind you, I get annoyed when pop stars and actors thank God when they win an award or sports stars win a final or something as if God had a preference of a particular album or performance! Thanks again to those who replied Sad day indeed

I just disagree with what you're saying entirely. If you want to go to a movie and find joy this weekend etc. that's fine. But to say that it is even the correct thing to be doing at this time is in my mind baffling. To me this is a time of mourning and to go see a movie for the joy or for a statement, either way neither make sense to me right now. The impact and power of this event and for the people involved must be respected and to try and forget it or rebel against it is unfortunately not appropriate. I will be thinking about this event, the people that died and the horror that has and continues to be experienced by many without turning it into something it isn't or a call to arms for the joy of cinema, nothing else.

Is there any indication yet whether the shooter did what he did BECAUSE it was Batman? Some warped, vigilantism, cosplay maniac? Or did he just target that screening simply because it was midnight and it was packed? The actual movie on show being entirely unimportant. Not that it is important to the deceased or in the grand scheme of things. But it would be a sad thing for Nolan and the all involved if there was some link to Batman however wierd misguided and tenuous. They bear no guilt WHATSOEVER but still... it would be a sad thing for them to bear if this evil cunt was a Batfan.
-
this will happen again, maybe not in a movie theater but someone will easily obtain a assault rifle with multiple rounds and take out a large group of people. This wasn't the first and it won't be the last. Sad to say but it is true. I hated going to the movie theater already but the odds of being shot are zero, I mean 100 people out of 300 million, so we are all safe but I am still depressed because I know I will read another one of these stories soon. It is always some mentally ill pussy who never could get laid has to kill us all innocents. This whole situation really bums me out. I can't help but feel the pain and sorrow of all those that lost loved ones. I can't help but think how fragile life is, and how hostage like we are to the mentally ill with easily obtained assault rifles with endless rounds of bullets. Nothing I can do but be depressed, eventually get over it forget then it happens again later on.

If you want to see a movie to find joy that's fine, but to say others should is WRONG. This is a time of mourning for these individuals and we can't pretend that one reaction is better then another. I will be respecting these victims and thinking about it. Doesn't matter where i do it. And yes cinema is a place of healing for me, but I'm not the one in need of healing right now!

Here's the problem: once per movie, almost without fail, I have to say something to some loud, inconsiderate jerkoff.
by ScaryWaitress
The idea that that loud, inconsiderate jerkoff may now be packing heat to protect him/herself against an asshole kid with an AK-47 is going to make that prospect a lot more scary. I only go to see the movies I really, REALLY want to see on the big screen these days, because the stress of waiting for that moment when I have to call someone out on their discourtesy frankly ruins the experience. I stopped going to see movies regularly in the theater about 6 years ago SOLELY because of this issue; the widespread use of phones in theaters is only getting worse. Add to this that there may now be MORE guns in theaters???? Fucking great. I'll still go to see TDKR. I'll still go to see the movies I want to see. It will just be that much more uncomfortable, though, watching in all that fucking Kevlar. That shit does NOT breathe.

Gun Control is a minority. The NRA has too much power. Deep down most Americans don't want gun control.

But seriously I've personally ensured the safety and comfort of THOUSANDS of people on my delta flights that I've contributed to in my part as a ramp agent, so to have this happen and create a climate of fear around going to see some silly superhero flick, staggering to say the least. Flying is MUCH MORE dangerous than chilling with your homies and seeing some movie... Do we even have precedence for this kind of tragedy? Has this even happened before? Like some kind of circus massacre? I ain't scared to go see a movie though. I'm black. I'm scared to go anywhere in my neighborhood every day. This will just be another day.
-
I don't know if gun control is the answer, but I definitely agree that if the citizens of the US want to outlaw something by vote, it *can* be done. Your non-smoking example is a good one.
-
In fact I would think that lives would have been saved if someone had a concealed weapon permit and was able to fire back and kill the delusional piece of crap. The bottom line is if somebody wants to hurt people with any sort of object be it a gun, a car, or a knife they will probably do so. It is up to us as individuals to take steps to protect ourselves and others around us. If that means obtaining a concealed weapons permit then so be it. Maybe if these a-holes know that more of the public will be armed then they might, - just might, think twice about what they plan to do to hurt and kill others. Again, gun control is not the answer.

Been on AICN almost from day 1. Over the years, I've read a zillion posts and contributed many of my own. For the most part, I stay on topic and away from religious or political comments. Only 2 posts for gun control and at least one deluded idiot suggesting you go out AND BUY A GUN. To "protect" yourself. Really? I live in a state with open carry. Anyone can buy a weapon, take a pencil whip class at a gun range, and hit the street packing artillery. To date, there's ZERO evidence that this "right" deters crime in any way. If anything, it's gasoline on a fire. If someone was armed besides the gunman in Colorado, it is almost certain that (a) he/she wouldn't have prevented anything and (b) probably killed or injured others. Rounds from Holmes' weapons went from theater 9 to 8. A gunfight would have made it worse. FYI, I am a combat veteran (Viet Nam) and qualified Marksman. I was raised with guns. I also hold multiple belts in martial arts. I currently do not own a single firearm. I carry an ASP baton when I'm out at night, especially is rough places. Personal choice - with the added bonus that if I am disarmed or killed, no one is going to use a 26 inch piece of aluminum to rob a bank or kill someone else. And there's zero chance I'll hit a loved one or bystander with an errant round. Folks - don't kid yourself. Firing a handgun in a moment of crisis and terror and hitting ONLY what you aim at is tough, even for well trained folks. Ask a cop or military member; it ain't like the movies. I vote for NO GUNS. Again, personal choice. But take a hard look in the mirror before you think about packing a gun. On a shorter soapbox, get over the God crap. There isn't one. Life is short, sometimes brutal, and has no do over clause. Do your best NOW, every day. Lastly, look up the NAMI chapter in your town and attend some of their classes. If more people understand mental illness, it will increase the chances of the best way of stopping a deranged mind - before it happens.

Both are unknowable scenarios. If laws were stricter there is no way to know if this particular nut would still have been noticed ie prevented from legally obtaining a firearm. Plus even if stopped from legally buying a firearm there is no way to know if they would have simply obtained one illegally. If someone (or multiple someones) in the theater was legally armed there is no way to know if they would have been able to slow or stop this event, shot other people accidentally in trying to, or if they would be too frightened by the situation to act. Conjecture on either scenario seems ridiculous especially when framed as an absolute.

-
There is always this ridiculous notion that if they can't get the guns legally, they will get them illegally. Well if there weren't so many guns out there to begin with, it may not be the case. And how easy is it for someone to get a gun illegally in this country? You all seem to think its a piece of cake. It probably isn't but why bother when its so easy to get anything, even banned weapons from gun shows and the like because they aren't regulated enough. You guys always say its criminals and nutjobs...well those guys were exactly like you...law abiding citizens, until they pulled the trigger. Yeah guns don't kill people, but they sure make it a lot easier to do it and kill more people quickly.

Statistics from the FBI’s Uniformed Crime Report show that states with right-to-carry laws have a 30% lower homicide rate, 46% lower robbery, and 12% lower aggravated assault rate and a 22% lower overall violent crime rate than do states without such laws. And holy shit do we have short term memories in these times of 24/7 news bombardment or what? I value my right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness over some moron's desire to own an AR15. THEY ARE NOT EQUAL. There is something to admire in the founding fathers' intentions with the 2nd amendment-- a citizenry having the right to arm itself against an oppressive govt. However, the result has been disastrous. They did not have any clue what it would have wrought. Problem is, guns are written into this country's DNA as a result, thus, you cannot just outlaw them-- there would be a god damn civil war over it. But you can ban everything but hunting rifles. Get everything else out. Leave gun enthusiasts single shot rifles so they can go hunting with them. Why gun folk feel they should be able to own automatic rifles and armor piercing bullets and 12 and 13 round clips is mind boggling.
-
...but his missive here seems genuinely heartfelt and decent. Dreams are as important as living; everything that we behold around us began as a dream, and Cinema is an important adjunct to those dreams. Art and the liberty to perform and enjoy it are often junked in times of duress but it shouldn't be so. Survival is just living for the sake of living but art can often show that living as actually worth something and worth doing, worth being. Cinema, particularly in America (I live in the UK), is a very important and far reaching facet of Art. It deserves to shine undiminished by sad acts of sad individuals. Please support it and don't let the taint of a disturbed psyche colour this and other films.

I wasn't trying to flame folks who believe in God. In point of fact, I was raised very Fundamentalist but made my own choices. I think I'm more Agnostic than Atheist, btw. I admit that it does irk me somewhat when folks invoke God trivially. "I want to thank God for helping me win the Super Bowl", etc. I don't think he micromanaged you, dude. More likely, it's good genes, lots of good food, professional coaches and trainers, and having the time and money to focus only on football you should thank. I think some of the stuff I've heard and seen today pushed that button perhaps. Anyone I offended in regards to the remark I made in my original post - accept my apology. I disagree with Nordling's sentiment. Premiere's for DKR have been cancelled in Paris, WB have pulled all DKR spots from airing for the entire weekend. NYPD is chaperoning all showings in the city. Why? Because of Copy cat Jokers all over the world. Because this world has now been populated with literally the worst human beings ever to come to this earth. Remember how much we hate hitler? He was one guy, one! but he was in power and had the support of his people. HE was one guy, but such a huge asshole that history doesn't forget, right"? Welcome to 2012. There are hitlers, and jokers and copycat assholes pretty much running the streets without an ounce of moral fabric, or an ethical standard to live their life by. And the reason is excess. a SuperSized nation of every indulgence you can think of. And it's making us all fucking sick. So I say. DON'T go to a theater. Stay home with people you love and trust. Cause it's a fucking nightmare out there, and it's not going to help fuckasses like "the joker" to give them an audience. Hey Nordling! Ask the parents of the slain children if they're telling their surviving children (if they have any) or nieces or nephews or cousins or neighbors, please go to a theatre because of "the Magic" of movies. IF they are they're suspect. if they are, then they've sold their soul a long time ago, in the interest of fill in the blank evil. That's the problem. Yo only get one life there, Skip. Tread carefully and all that. I can see how you tell the parents at Columbine to keep sending their kids to school. You could "maybe" make a case for it. But in this economy, going to a theater is a fucking luxury most of us can't afford. In the context of this fucked up repugnant shooting? Go sit in a corner, have a coke, and shut the fuck up. Cause that is some straight up BAD advice, Nordling. I know. I have two daughters. And they're NOT going to a theater to watch this movie or any other, any time soon. I'd rather have them alive and safe at home, then experiencing the "magic" of bullets, joker or bane copycats or whoever are presenting at a theater near you. Imagine this shit is happening somewhere in Syria, everyday. I KNOW the civil residents of Syria are becoming MORE careful. Not less. Not freely indulging themselves ignoring the consequences. You guys have a pretty wide readership to spread this kind of irresponsible spiel. This whole site is suspect.

Another sad thing about all this (and, granted, this is a lot lower on the list compared to people losing their lives), but the movie-geek in me can't help but think how this has forever ruined the TDKR film for all these fans' families. And the survivors are always going to remember at exactly what point the shooter started during the film (assuming they can even attempt to watch it again later). That's just fucked up too. Hell... think about all those people who are now out of a home for days while police search the asshole's boobytrapped apartment. It's a domino effect. The fucking Coward ruined things on so many levels. This should've been a FUN event! This whole thing is sickening to me. I'm having a really tough time wrapping my head around it. WHY?! Why do this? WHY!? If you're a fucking recluse... uh, then stay a recluse, asshole. We don't need you if this is all you can offer society. "DIAF" has never felt more appropriate.

Actually , we still havent had the gun control debate at all
by magnetoelectric
When is that going to happen? This man throws tear gas into a dark theater and begins randomly shooting Jared Lee Loughner walked right up to Gabrielle Giffords, put the gun flush to her forehead and fired. Nobody in Congress said a fucking word about gun control When Treyvon Martin was killed , several people called 911 , nobody went outside to intervene or to even see what was going on. We didnt have the discussion When Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people @ Virgina Tech : We never had the discussion When Nidal Hasan killed 13 people @ Fort Hood. Nobody said jack ding dong diddly dick about gun control In fact Id go as far to say that The White House & Congress were eerily silent on gun control when it came to both fort hood and Gabby Giffords

But the truth is, I'd probably be frozen to my seat in fear like most normal human beings.

This is a flashpoint and yeah it's fucked up. I know a lot of people are also asking the questions like why would someone bring a 3 month old baby to a movie in the 1st place. This is NOT a case of life imitating art. It's just another lonely disenfranchised sociopath. Same old story. Unfortunately, this guy took shit to a creep level we never thought possible. The trick with gun control is no matter how far you take it outside of reading peoples minds there's no guaranteed method of preventing shit like this from happening. In England criminals can get their hands of guns just fine. I'm sure a creep like this wouldn't have an problem doing the same. Warner Bros. are fucked on this. This guy basically not only hijacked their franchise from them but even in the history of mass murderers and serial killers this guy has pretty much hijacked The Joker. He basically gets to be The Joker. He called it. I wouldn't be surprised if there's pressure for DC to do away with the character in all media. Oh well, I guess he really showed "the schemers" at Warner Bros. how silly their plan was to have a normal fucking opening weekend for their movie. Jackass.

"The Dark Knight Rises" director Christopher Nolan has issued the following statement about the early Friday shooting that claimed 12 victims: "Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of 'The Dark Knight Rises,' I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community. I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theater is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families."

Why stop there? Why don't we just ban rocks and metal objects too? After all, iron can be smelted down and turned into lethal objects and rocks you can easily throw and kill someone with that type of material.

I dont know how much of a *loner* this guy was but its hard to believe that with the arsenal he assembled, the specialist clothing, and the way he rigged his home - that no one knew. No one even suspected. Bullshit. I wish this had never happened and if it turns out it *could* have been avoided or predicted by the vigilance of his family, friends or the fuckers who sold him the weaponry then it is time for wrath.

Agreed. And check out this contradictory statement from a reporter at NBC: "I have dealt with too many people over the years who have told me they got the idea from a movie, TV, or having someone else having done it," Van Zandt said. "So do movies make people commit acts of violence? The answer is in the vast majority of cases, no. But there’s a lot of people with a rich fantasy world ... All they need is a little push and for those people movies of violence, assault and things like that can be that push." So, on one hand he says films *can* be blamed sometimes. But then right afterward he says it's the way these "people" (I use that term very loosely) view the world - in some kind of sick personal fantasy. Uh.. ok... So, what you just said then was it's the WAY these crazy fucks interpret what they see and hear. Obviously, it's different from what the rest of us think and do after seeing/hearing the same things. So.. again, how is this anything's blame but the actual crazy fucking shooter's? Makes no sense at all. Yet, people will eat it up.

...I live in Aurora, about two miles from this theater. Now I don't know what you call little but we have 300,000 people in this town. And as far as it being white, well, Aurora is about the most racially diverse town in Colorado. As far as the theater itself, my (black) friend at work pointed out today that he was surprised that no one at that particular theater was packing. His comment, not mine. I only moved to Colorado 3 years ago and I've never been to that one. It's kind of a typical mall theater, whereas when I do go out to a flick, I tend to gp to one of the massive jobs around here.

I've got a better idea: DON'T go to a movie this weekend
by DeckardB26354
Instead, hang with your family and do something interactive and communicative with each other to show that you love them. You can always go and see a movie some other weekend, or watch a movie at home with your family. But do something that REALLY matters with someone important in your life. Don't waste the time you could spend with others in a meaningful way by going to a movie this weekend. Just my two cents.

Morgan Freeman @MoorganFreeman Sometimes this world can truly be a horrifying place. They just wanted to see a damn movie. #TheaterShooting
-
The news didn't say that The Dark Knight films cause people to go insane. Just that there is a parallel between what this kid did, and the films. Why else would he choose TDKR premier to go on a shooting spree? However, if it wasn't The Dark Knight, it would have been something else entirely. He would have shot people, even if batman never existed, because it was in his brain to begin with. He would have found a different launchpad. The problem with society and the media especially is that, we want to blame things. We blame movies, heavy metal, or just that the kid was insane. But we fail to look for a true cause...mabey the parents did a bad job raising him, or mabey his brain is different from the rest of us, or mabey a combination of both. Science could have prevented this atrocity from happening, but the world isn't smart enough to recognize what creates killers of this magnitude. So the shootings will continue to happen, until people wake up and start researching the human brain.

I think that people need to concentrate on the actions of this guy, and not that it happened to be at a screening of Batman
by Michael Miller
When I heard about a shooting at a movie theater last night, on the radio, on the way to work this morning, I knew exactly what film it happened at without being told. It was obviously, this guy wanted to take out as many people as he possibly could, in a confined area. A midnight premiere showing of one of the most anticipated movies of the year, in the summer time, that was either going to be sold out, or even oversold, lined up his victims like the proverbial ducks on the pond. Does it really matter what movie it was? Does it really matter where it happened? This was somebody bent on one thing. Killing as many people as he possibly could, in an environment that guaranteed him as many human targets as possible. The guy is fucked up, plain and simple. No amount of finger pointing at any specific entertainment outlet, be it movies, or comics, or videogames, is going to make this event make any more sense. It really appalls me that the media, the morons that take everything they're told by said outlets as god given fact, or politicians that will inevitably try and make a name for themselves by turning this tragedy into some sort of soapbox for their own professional gain, are going to so overshadow the fact that some nut took the lives of at least 12, injured 71, and traumatized countless others for life. People need to put the blame where it solely belongs. On this gutless fuckwit, that had to appease his own inner demons by mowing down innocent people, not to mention fucking BABIES, that had their lives either taken, or dramatically altered for the rest of their life. For all anyone knows, the "I'm the Joker" comment could have just been a fucking smartass retort to officials. Either way, the attention needs to be solely placed on this for lack of a better word, "Person" and not the sensationalist, bullshit, attention that is being placed on society by media and media outlets to find a reason, for a completely irrational act.

There is abit of a sureal blur between this unwanted event & the movie hype
by even9
Movie Genres can't please everyone all the time and a fan of a Genre doesn't have to like all movies of that Genre. For some of the more hardcore fans of this batman serial, the hype of the characters or films seems to have gotten lost the Genre nature of their fandom on them, or they lack the movie culture or sophistication to understand that. Most movies are not necessarily either good or bad, cool or uncool. Ain't it cool? ya don't know until you've seen the movie if you're interested in it in the first place. Movie marketin that just tells ya ta movie is cool before you've seen it, loses the Genre experience of it to some fans i think & that's maybe a prob.
-
but with the emerging fact that it echoes a panel in a Batman comic book, happened at a Batman film, the killer said he was the joker, blah blah blah - it's not like we're going to be allowed to forget it now is it?

I consider myself pretty calloused to things like this, but this one hits where it hurts. All those family's whose lives are turned upside down and the fact that this will forever be associated with a genre and character I love really tears me up. . . .the idea that going to a movie is "one of the last great joys we have left these days" is quite possibly the most ludicrous thing I've ever read on the internet. by lv_426
I doubt we will get any form of effective gun control even presented let alone passed. Not to politicize this, but it has to be said. We are so fractured now that not much of anything can get done, especially leading up to what will be a volatile and vitriolic election this fall. As for this shooting, the asshole that did it is obviously worthless and not just a crazy nut job either. At least not crazy in the sense that it should be used as a defense in court. He obviously exercised some planning that lead to the violent act he carried out last night. He is a cold blooded murder. No different than the mafia or a gang carrying out a hit, except here the victims were not affiliated with the shooter, there were random innocents. I think Nordling's statement is a good one, but no one should feel guilty if they don't go to a movie this weekend. I personally don't feel right about going to a film this weekend. Not out of fear but out of feeling sad and in a down mood over this shooting. It is not going to be easy for some of us to not think of this in the now and the near future when going to see a movie at the theater.

...They are filled with rude assholes who text and talk throughout the movie, bring annoying children to inappropriate fare for their age, munch loudly on tons of chips, candy, and popcorn like the most ignorant of ruminants. the fact remains. here in nyc it's always been like that, which is bullshit. I'm not trying to bring race into it, but dammit i cant ignore it! "urban" areas are more heavily patrolled with aw enforcement than "white" movie theaters. it's a fact. I remember watching belly in 82nd street and cops sitting right in front threatening movie goers if things happened inside. Funny in manhatten on 32nd street aint a cop in sight, when a violent movie comes out. Am I being insensitive or being truthfully honest. My thing is if your gonna have police target "urban" chain of movie theaters because the public is in the "urban" areas then dammit do the same for the "White" theater chains in manhatten! fuck that shit.... That's the way i see it. I'm not happy the shooting happened just pissed off because of what i see...

by James_Camera_On
I am definitely going to see TDNR this Saturday morning and maybe the next day as well. It's been a rough week for movie-lovers. I can't begin to say how sick I am of the types of people who have nothing better to do than to kill and terrorize, all in effort to restrict the lives their fellow human beings to ever tightening circles. We simply must not surrender to these killers and their enablers. I recall in 1984 (I think it was March) there was a mass killing at a McDonalds and there were people who tried to link it to the movie Red Dawn -- there had been a scene shown in the trailers that was cut from the movie showing soviet soldiers stopping at a McDonalds. Enough of this nonsense. We've got to go about our lives as free people no matter what. Anything less would be disastrous.

Take a primitive creature that has existed in its present state for 300,000 years. A creature that has evolved to hunt, fight and defend itself. Transpose that creature into a sterile, overpopulated concrete wilderness surrounded by things it is told it must never do despite its base instincts. Socially alienate it by convincing it to pursue abstract goals like wealth and fame over the social goals of deepening tribal bonds and family relationships. Set it unreasonable dreams of success and then expose it to an impenetrable fortress of beurocracy and nepotistic elitism. Constantly remind it that if it is depressed or angry or violent or lonely that it is a failure, emotionally weak and mentally diseased. Remind it that the only way to get sexual gratification is by conforming to an idealised male stereotype fetishised by woman that does not resemble itself. Reinforce it's sexual failure by giving it access to hours and hours of intense pornographic imagery, suggesting experiences that it can never hope to share. Then, give this creature easy access to an arsenal of military grade weapons and watch the carnage unfold. Welcome to 21st century American male life. God bless America. And Obama says it is impossible to understand how these things happen. Get real.

The shooter should be skinned alive and rolled in salt and cayenne pepper.
by Queefer Sutherland
Then he should be heavily wrapped in barbed wire and rolled down a long, steep hill.

Nailed it.
-
And all the reasons you cited are why I don't really go to theaters anymore. If there's something I do want to see on the big screen, I wait a week and go during a weekday when school's in session and people are at work. Even then I often run into audio or visual problems with the flick I'm seeing. The theater operators could give a shit less about the experience.
-
that is an awesome punishment. but the skinning alive would kill him before the salt. the rolling down the hill in barbed wire, is kick ass....

This is one of those cases where I don't care what psychological state of mind this murderer has. I don't care about any of his issues and/or problems. He planned this shit for a while. It wasn't spontaneous. He deserves to die. And those who are pro-life. Kiss my f&&king ass. It could have been anywhere. I go to movies, I have a 3 yrs old kid. She could have been a victim. I have no sympathy for this murderer. Death to him and in the most painful of ways. I'm obviously not being a good christian or catholic. Well religion is overrated, but that's my opinion. What I do know is that in the end, when someone takes it upon themselves to decide who dies like this jackass did, he deserves nothing less than the same retribution. Dennis Miller says it best. "The survival of the human species does not depend upon every member". Humanity is like a lawn. Kill the bad weeds.

First, my condolences to the families. This guy could have walked in with antique six shooters and a lever action rifle from the 1800s and killed just as many people. They were fish in a barrel. We're lucky the death toll was so low. He could have just walked in with a gas can and soaked the first three rows, lit them up and killed more people. Pretty tough to 'stop drop and roll' in row B, seat 15. The difference between a magazine fed .22 cal hunting rifle and the AR-15 in 5.56mm this nutjob used is entirely cosmetic. Blaming a particular type of firearm for someone's murder in any circumstance is like blaming the deaths on 9/11 on the particular model of the airplanes that were hijacked. But no one has ever called for banning Boeing 757/767's. No assault rifle has ever magically jumped up on it's own volition and killed anyone. A human has always had to pull the trigger.

Because of this incident, there may be those who are still inclined to see the movie this weekend to bring weapons into theaters as a measure of personal protection. Well said sir. I was at a midnight showing of TDKR last night. We all know the excitement better than most, we live movies. Those people in that Aurora theater were like us. So sorry for those affected by this tragedy

Nord's post has nothing to do with DKR or any movie in particular. Its just a reminder that in this time when all we seem to see and hear about is darkness and pain and murder, et al, magic seems a long way away. We can forget that there is still one place we can go to get away from it for a little while. A place of magic where anything we can imagine can come true. From flying horses to talking animals to the Gods themselves. Unfortunaltely, fear is pervasive and insidious. Don't let fear make you forget why you go there. Go see a movie in memory of those who can't any more. I will; if simply to affirm that evil will never distract me from live and joy..

My heart goes out to the victims and the victims of wider America. So many people here have commented on how they are now no longer going to go to the cinema. This breaks my heart and my thoughts and prayers go out to America as a whole. I am Australian. You can't buy a gun here unless you have extream reasons to own one (believe me they are extreme). I have never seen a gun store and have never seen a private citizen carring a gun my entire life and I live in the heart of Sydney. If I saw a gun I would imagine it would have the same effect on me when I spot a shark while surfing. FREAK OUT AND RUN! Everything that moves in my country can pretty much kill me - octopus, fish, snakes, spiders, crocs, sharks, stingrays, ants, hell even something cute like a platypus has poisonous barbs. People can kill too. Stab, bash, suffocate, run over etc.... Underbelly crims can purchase guns on the blackmarket at exorborant prices and shoot people. Usually the crims shoot each other and - yes - this happens often in my country. But a crazy college drop out cannot walk into Walmart and buy some guns and shoot a cinema / school / shopping mall full of people dead. My niece does not go to school worried someone will shoot her, I don't go to the mall worried someone will shoot me nor have I ever thought about being shot period. The crazy guy killed people. He did it with guns. This allowed him to kill a lot of people. A crazy guy can walk into a cinema in Australia and stab / bash someone but he wont get very far. The most fear I live with is if I will be involved in a car crash. I love America. I love Americans. I love American culture. I am not shitting on your nation. Just sharing the reality of my existance because I just simply cannot fathom the fear and terror guns create. About 20 years ago Martin Bryant visited a tourist spot in Australia and shot dead a large number of people. Australia changed it's gun laws (which were already strict) and a buy back and destruction scheme was conducted. People were compensated and the nation felt and has been safer since. It can happen guys. Make it happen.

You're in a crowded movie theater. The lights are dim and commercials/trailers are playing. All of sudden the room fills with acrid smoke, then screams as the audience assumes it's part of the show. Then shots ring out. Thank God you brought your own gun. Except.... where's the shooter? Hard to see a thing in the smoke. Plus everybody is screaming for real now. That can't help your nerves. Still, lucky you, you brought a gun. You better hope you hit the bad guy and not an innocent bystander. Did you come by yourself or with friends? Or family? Better be real sure that through the smoke, the screams and your own nerves you don't hit someone you know. God forbid you brought a baby or your six year old, like some of the audience did. And that's the problem I have with the "if only someone had been able to bring a gun" argument.
-
Condolences to the families of all those killed or injured in this act of insanity. The other victims in this are that nutjob's parents & family. They're going to have to live with what he did last night for the rest of their lives wondering if they could have done something to prevent it. As for those, who are worrying about getting shot at the movies - you're far more likely to be injured or killed in your car on the way to or from the theatre.

Addressing some of the trends on this thread and taking Nordling's advice.
by Sithtastic
First off I want to say all the hyperbole has been expended from where I sit... For those of you who think this might be one of the most violent times to be alive, there's plenty of argument to the contrary, ironically from the neuroscience community (the field the shooter studied). According to Stephen Pinker "One of them is the spread of government, the outsourcing of revenge to a more or less disinterested third party. That tends to ramp down your rates of vendetta and blood feud for all the reasons that we’re familiar with from The Sopranos and The Godfather. If you’ve got a disinterested third party, they’re more likely to nip that cycle in the bud. Not necessarily because they have any benevolent interest in the welfare of their subject peoples, especially in the early governments." (From Reason Magazine) It is no small shock we are repulsed, because a civilized society is repulsed by events such as this. We sometimes have an outburst and call such things "madness" when in this instance the shooter showed signs of complex pre-meditation, rivaling that of the Utoya Island shooter in Norway. James Holmes may have been disturbed, but I would not call him crazy. As to the issue of those who wonder why we "haven't had the conversation" on gun violence, we've had it before in the late 80's and early 90's with the Brady Bill. We had it again after Columbine and now it looks like we're going to have it yet again. I for one think the whole thing is stale and old. And Nordling's right. I live in Europe, but when TDKR premiers here, I'm going. You should too.
-
Damned straight. Most people who own guns have never faced a situation like this, nor have they been trained to handle one if they did. I'm a cop and admit that even I would be challenged in such a situation. But I gladly would have capped the motherfucker if I'd been there.
-
Is this sad? Yes. Is the sky falling? No. It is one mentally ill person who acted on his impulses. It has happened before, it will happen again. It is nothing new, and it says nothing about society.
-

The only statement this has on society is in the way people react to it
by ajit maholtra
Like in another thread one guy said, I bet it was a towelhead who did it. Imagine if it was a brown guy, just think of the comments that would be all over these pages. THAT is a comment on society.
-
I thought TDKR was fantastic and immediately felt bad that those people didn't get to see what I thought was a perfect ending. I'm not a big believer in an afterlife but I need to think that there is a way that they did see it. Maybe somehow they can watch it through us. Their souls or energy or whatever remains of a human's spirit. I need to think that they got to see the rest of the movie.

Don't ban guns. Just Insta-Execute Criminals Using Guns
by Obi Wanna Cannoli
Your red neck neighbor decides in a drunk rage to shoot your pick up truck with his shotgun? Fine, as a Red Blooded American NRA Card Carrying Man he has every right to own that gun....but....because he used it in a crime the police are required by law to execute him on the spot. As a further deterrent an amendment to the Insta-Execute law would add that his entire immediate family are also Insta-Executed. Unless a person was insane or high as a kite they would think twice about using a gun in a crime. Gun use in crimes would go down and family members would do a hell of a lot more to keep family members off drugs and away from guns. Charlton Heston came up with this idea when we were drinking Jack Daniels and shooting off a few rounds in his back yard.
-
i ALREADY SAID THIS, FELT THIS, AND WENT TO THE MOVIES ANYWAY....
-
The problem is many of these people made Ds in math and they don't even understand what a percentage or probabiliy is. They think it's suddenly more dangerous to go see a movie just because 12 people were killed out of 300 million. It's more dangerous to drive your car to the theater than it is to sit in the theater. Probably 1000x times more dangerous. But dumb people think with their feelings and not with any kind of rational brains, so that explains much of the reaction to this. And of course it's sad whenever anyone gets shot and killed and you hear about it but something like 50 people a day, every day, get murdered in the usa, so not like it is anything new.

Interestingly enough though, is that the media is trying to pin this on the usual white guy perp.
by DanielnocharismaCraig
When it's clear from the photo he obviously could pass for a semite/latino type of character. Plus the fact that he's a registered Democrat as well. Notice the media is burying that fact as well. Not only that, but I've been reading some facts on this and some things just aren't adding up. For one thing, the perp not only has no training of any sort, but also no way to aquire that type of firearm and bulletproof equipment like that. And to give up so easily? I dunno. Could be another false flag op like 9/11 turned out to be. Zionists have infiltrated every level of our government, media and economic life after all.

so they load up on guns themselves. I'm sorry but you are paranoid nut jobs. I'm NEVER going to own a gun.. and I'm NEVER going to live in fear. I'm going to live my life every day like I have and owning/carrying a gun isn't going to change anything. Except increase the profits of gun manufacturers, who sell items designed only to kill a human being.

That's about it. I don't know what could possibly be the right thing to say right now.

I haven't seen in midnight screening in a while. But the last time I did was likely Batman Begins back in '05. Or maybe it was Spiderman 3. And I don't live in Colorado, but I feel for those poor people as if I was right in that theater with them. I saw the film this afternoon, and while I didn't care too much for the film, I was thinking of these victims much of the time. Here's to you.
-
in here and yet I got banned for it. I see comments that are on par with what I said, I just said I brought up the very same things, and yet I got banned. These guys talk shit about democracy and freedom and expression and yet they run this site like a gestapo. I never said I was proud of the guy who killed these people. I said it angers me when people pick and choose who they lament over. It angers me that, as ghost-of-chainsaw pointed out, black theaters will have cops there like it's a fuckin' precinct, but no one ever assumes white people will do shit. And aint't it fuckin' Colorado too? Not to stereotype, but ain't it fuckin' Colorado too? This state ain't known for national/world-breaking news when it comes to gun violence and people just assuming it'll "never" "happen" "there". I was angry as hell that a 3 month old BABY was even taken to a midnight showing, let alone killed because the baby was taken to a midnight showing. I value ALL life, I was pissed at what happened when I found out about it this morning around 5 AM on CNN, but then I was equally pissed that CNN just kept their news focused entirely and squarely on this. CNN's focus shows you the importance of violence and how it sells to the populace. They report about suicide bombers and more people getting killed in those suicide bombs than the peoplen at the theater, but I don't see that being focused on and carried non-stop without commercial interruption. I don't even want to say it's an American thing, but it is a fact that Americans expect the world to care about them, but when the world gets hurt, America could care less abotu the world. When people die, whether they're affiliated with genre/fanboy stuff or not, I feel saddenned and lessenned by it because ALL human life is valuable to it. I'm like Superman like that. I don't focus on one group over the other. Should we pray or have a moment of silence for these guys? We should do that for ALL people that pass away, and I'm not even trying to tell you, the reader, what to do, but I don't want to leverage one life as more important than the other. Even though Aint It Cool banned me, and I was/am upset with that, I don't value any moderator's life here any less than a member of my family's. That's all I wanted to say. Hope it wasn't too "controversial". Look at these other comments and ban these guys if you think I'm too much, 'cause some of these others deserve the axe too if my initial comment was considered too much for whoever's standards.

I don't post often, but I read this site daily. I just watched this movie. The entire theater went dark due to a power surge in the middle of the film. People, at first, stood and looked around. Settled, the audience sat down and waited. We watched the rest of the film. When it was over, everyone stood and applauded. Fuck this dick. He will NOT rob us of the movie experience. My prayers are with the victims.
-
I'm black too, and that environment, "YOUR" environment, the very environment that you live in, instills more fear in merely going out in your OWN neighborhood than going to see a movie. I saw TDKR today at 10:25 in Manhattan at Lincoln Loews. I knew what happened earleir around 5 AM, but I didn't pay it any mind when watching the movie. The rain in new York had most of my attention. We need not to focus on certain lives that got lost but instead focus on all. We also need to focus on keeping the lives and people that we do have alive, like having the cops at white malls and white movie theaters like they have at black ones and black neighborhoods and all that so "America" doesn't get all saddened and all that when a shooting happens. This stuff can be prevented. It should not happen, but people assume certain people won't do these kinds of things, and this is what happens when you assume that. Beef up the security. There is NO, or was no at the time I saw it this morning, security at Lincoln Loews in Manhattan. It would be too easy to go into these places and just open fire. People don't think about things until it happens to them. Out of sight out of mind I guess.

If you're religious enough to where you feel like you need to pray for the victims and their families, then you obviously must believe that "God" has a "plan." I was right on the mark when I said "out of sight, out of mind". People do not think about things, unless it happens to them or affects something they're interested in. Like pipple said this shit happens every day in a black or non white or poor neighborhood. Nobody gives a FUCK. But Colorado, some suburb, some "non-violent area"....you get comments like this "I was in a theater not far from this one at all. It is very scary to think that it could happen to you at any moment. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims families." posted quote often everywhere. "it is very scary to think that it could happen to you at any moment"......WELCOME TO PLA.....Sighs. Welcome to most people's realities. No way in hell that guy who wrote that was black. Unless he lived in a sheltered suburb, with plenty of white friends or well-to-do people, no way in HELL a black person or minority or person from a disadvantaged environment would EVER say something that fucking naive. if you don't get shot in a theater, you know it "COULD" happen outSIDE the theater! This is everyday living for some people. You need to wake up or you'll get caught off guard. And I want to repeat that I didn't just limit it to blacks or one group or the other, in case somebody wants to fake some outrage at what I said. The lack of security at certain movie theaters and public places and peoples' belief that others WON'T harm them should be more alarming and unsettling.
-
I have to say, all today I have been in mourning. And to read your short article here was very nice. Why? To several people, I used phrases that you used in your article. I have told people that "They are us." That the Aurora theater-goers are geeks like us, and that is why this is hurting me because I have been in their seats, their eyes dazzled by a brand-new film. I also have told people that I have no religion, and that the closest thing I have to the same kind of mass spiritual experience is watching a movie in a room filled with geeks. Nothing else comes close to that feeling. For that reason, I honor the geeks and non-geeks who perished in Aurora, CO, and I intend to see a movie this weekend no matter what. This is my temple, my synagogue, my mosque, my cathedral of filmic awesomeness. They are us, and we are them. Geeks unite with Aurora.
-
Yes very true...people are saying that suddenly they could get killed when they go to the movies, but again, they could get killed at any moment driving to the movies, or to the store or anywhere. And the odds of that happening is thousands of times greater. It just makes no sense but most people aren't very logical and are ruled by their emotions at that particular moment.

I respect the 2nd Amendment, but I also reserve my right not to own firearms if I so choose. If any of you choose to use this event as a reason to arm yourselves, that's fine by me. I support the freedom to make your own decisions.

I am the first to defend the younger generations. When people call them hipsters or emos, I'll usually come to their defense and (rightly) criticize terms that lump people into convenient little *hate boxes* that make the whole affair easier for people who are usually just .. jealous... or simply hateful. Or dumb. Or maybe they just don't *get it*. But what I just saw on the way home from the hospital a little while ago was disgusting. It was a jeep of younger people, mostly female actually, whooping and hollering in an open-roofed jeep. Six of them, all dressed as the Joker, complete with bright colored hair (mostly green). One of the most insensitive (and actually not funny on any level) things I have ever seen. I felt so embarrassed for them, but wanted them to crash all at the same time. Disgusting!! I hope a cop pulled them over eventually. And gave them tickets for every little infraction he could make up. How can that be even remotely funny to them right now?? Oooh, they're Sooooo shocking. Blech!!! *spit* Disgusting. If one of your kids did that today, I don't care how old they are. Spank 'em!

And it sucks. The world doesn't make sense unless you force it to. I love of all of you crazy, stupid, annoying, nerds, geeks, and film fans, and I am going to this movie this weekend. T.'.

Defy the theater shooter: Go out to see a film, and DON'T be afraid -- by Anthony Breznican at Entertainment Weekly
by antonphd
As someone who believes deeply in the power of story, and spends a lot of time in the dark watching images projected on a movie screen, this feels like a violation of one of our last collective refuges. We go to the movies to escape, and we do it together. It’s a source of joy, comfort, and relaxation – all things our society could use a little more of. I know this is very Kumbaya of me, but frankly, we could use a little more “together” too.
-
As someone who has been called a *pinko liberal*, I actually think that total gun control is severely dangerous. I ABSOLUTELY, however, fully support a complete ban on automatic and semi-automatic guns. Period. I know people will ask *so, it's better if only 6 people die instead of 12?*. And my answer to that is... YES!!!! It IS better if fewer people die. We're never going to get a complete ban on guns here, but we can prevent MASS killings. And we should. Colorado has NO excuse right now. They should know better. But no, they were too busy playing the blame game. Have been for years. There are even tremendously biased *experts* who have been taken seriously that have convinced millions that the Columbine kids were never bullied at all. Even though testimony and evidence was clearly cherry-picked. I'm going to shut up now before I piss off the wrong person. I don't want to upset people any worse, but I'm SO pissed off at this insane fuck for killing all those people. And I'd like to see that it never happens again, never on this scale. And ESPECIALLY not in Colorado.

Sacramento, CA. Sadly. I miss my old city. I'm not very nostalgic, but I do miss feeling comfortable just walking downtown at 2am after a gig. It seems like the only safe places are close to the gay bars downtown, and even there you have to watch for people who are there to attack gay people. And if you're walking anywhere near those places, you ARE considered gay no matter what. Even with a girl on your arm. So much has changed. I remember when midtown was weird.... but safe. Welcoming and friendly even.
-
The girls were probably just losers who like to dress as as cartoon characters when watching cartoon movies.
-
...and believe me, I was HORRIFIED to wake up to this sickening news, but after digesting this senselessness info for a few hours, I started thinking about the inevitable hysteria and overreaction that was going to follow. And sure enough, it's begun. AMC is banning the cosplayers. (Even though this guy wasn't cosplaying.) Other chains are also reportedly going to go TSA on moviegoers. None of this shit would have stopped this guy, of course. They're trying to play this guy up as a Batman geek that was obsessed with Nolan's Joker, even though he looks more like some smug fratboy. And of course, the political finger-pointing that's going on is also pathetic. We've seen these mass shootings in countries with strict gun laws as well. There will always be twisted, evil assholes in this world that do things like this. We can try our best to prevent them and develop countermeasures, but shit still happens. I hope they execute James Holmes for this. And I'm sorry if it's too soon to be saying these things. I don't know what to say to the bereaved family and friends of the victims, except to extend my sincere condolences.
-
That sort of stuff wouldnt happen in New York. Sounds like Sacramento is becoming more like the deep south from your description, or like the ghetto.

Went to the 930 pm show of TDKR tonight to a nearly empty theater...
by pax256
While quiet theaters are more often great to enjoy films in, nearly empty theaters that are too quiet make you feel more isolated than usual. Good film and dont agree with Harry on it but I have mixed feelings about it. I think we need to see this film as part of a story arc and thats the only way to see it. Its the return of the king of this series. Theres no way it can stand alone. I think like Tree of Life by Malick that it needs to be seen more than once tho. I couldnt stand Tree of Life first time I saw it. Second time was a joy.

...they're reporting about how all the local theaters are stepping up security. In addition to the costume bannings (which doesn't affect me), there are going to be strict searches of personal items and intensified security screenings for all Dark Knight Rises showings. Like this movie makes people into murderers or something. Sorry Nordling, but I am NOT going to the movies if it's going to be like this. Going to the movies was a pain in the ass for me as it was (refer to my and others' comments in the Texting talkback), but now I have to face some TSA wannabe rent-a-cop gestapo, too? The picture was too big for the screen because the projectionist started the film with the flat lense instead of the scope lense or vice versa. Possibly the automation wasn't working on the turret or else the projectionist hit the wrong button. This is the final nail in the cinema experience. People already prefer to stay home and watch movies. Driving somewhere to pay ridiculous prices to see a movie? What is this, the 70's? Stay home, big tv, surround sound, beers, snacks, blowjobs and NOT A SINGLE DEATH!!!!
-
That's what this is really all about. Now they can search you and stop you from smuggling in snacks, etc, and can do so under the guise of "public safety" and "being proactive". I remember the theater chains were proposing similar precautions right after 9/11 to take advantage of the situation. My mother said the day movie theaters start searching women's purses is the day women stop seeing movies. She was correct at that time; I wonder if that still holds true.

Why are you stating he broke in through the roof? Yup, pretty much anyone who's over 18 and not a felon; can buy an AR-15. But you can also squeeze off a hundred rounds a minute with some hunting rifles and hunting shotguns. Like I said, it's cosmetic. It may come as a shock, but pretty much anyone who is over 21 and not a felon in most states can also buy anything from a silenced MP-5, to a fully automatic M-60 all the way to a 105mm towed Howitzer. And carry it, and fire it outside of city limits, private land or approved ranges. And there are hundreds of thousands of fully legal machine gun owners in the US, but you never hear of a crime being committed by any of them. So again, it's not the weapons, it's the people. This guy was a nutjob. Plain and simple. If 'assault weapons' were illegal, he'd still be able to buy one off the street. And if his apartment really is rigged with complex explosives as the police stated in the latest press conference, he could have just as easily parked his ass in the middle of the theatre with a suicide vest under his jacket. And killed just as many people...if not more. If some nut really wants to kill people, then people will die. Fact of life. The problem here is that the fire exits weren't alarmed. That's just poor cinema management to begin with. Local kids must love that cinema because they can sneek their friends in for a free show whenever they like (or could up until now). If they'd have been alarmed, this may have never happened...and he'd have just walked into a McDonalds and started shooting instead.

This shooting happened in a dark, noisy cinema full of people. If the audience had been armed, it is more likely that more people would have died than less. More than just film fans, the midnight superhero moviegoer, in our cynical, pessimistic, disrespectful, ignorant modern culture, is a special breed of person: they still believe in justice, and good guys, and redemption, and having the courage to overcome one's fears and fight on. They still believe in having imagination, daring to dream, and child-like wonder. They enjoy the shared experience; anticipating a new story; and finding excitement in big film stories, this their sanctuary from the boorish, and often cruel real world, rejuvenated once experienced. They believe in Batman. And Marvel's Avengers. And Superman. And all the other superheroes they thrill to see come alive on the big screen. Holmes was specific to choose them. And specific to target them as the Joker. They represent the beating heart of young mythology, of all that is good in the face of evil. I hope the midnight superhero movie fans hold fast, and keep believing despite this madman's terrorism, and maintain their support of this brand of storytelling. If we don't believe in superheroes, we'll never have ones made of flesh and bone, much less heart and soul. So keep the faith fans; our collective goodness demands we do. Say a prayer for the slain and keep going to the movies. There's no better way to honor their memory than keep what they believed in alive, and stronger.

Waltkovacs If you think more gun laws will prevent tragedies like these....
by Chelloveck
Then you may be right. But the truth is criminals rarely buy guns through the legal avenues. If you disarm or severely limit guns to the law abiding citizenry you leave them at the mercy of gun-totting thugs. Sure law enforcement is there for protection but do you really believe they will stand by you at all times like private body guards? Get real. Guns aren't the real issue here. It's really about dealing with these throwbacks to human evolution who believe violence is the ultimate answer to all conflicts.

I don't think a copy/paste of airport TSA security methods is the answer
by lv_426
I do think that the theater chains need to rethink security though. Perhaps there is a way to have better security without it being the obtrusive kind that we all endure at an airport. As leroyspoboys said, the exit doors should have been alarmed. Not only that, but the fact that the murderer propped the exit door open for several minutes before he came back in armed, is really a huge problem. If an emergency exit door is opened and propped or held ajar while the film is still playing, that should be some sort of warning to the staff of the theater that something is amiss. Could there be a sensor-alarm on the outside of the building? That way if someone approaches the theater exit door, then someone is notified. This would not only help towards security, but would also deter people from sneaking into the movie and not paying. If there was procedure in place to evacuate the theater after the gunman exited through the side door then perhaps this could have been prevented or at least lessened. The bottom line is theater chains can't have tons of overbearing security unless they want to risk much less attendance. This could then cause prices to rise for tickets and concessions. Theaters are struggling as is. Not only that, but long security lines will make it so that theaters have to cut down on the number of showings per day. This could then force the studios to start making shorter films. Plus, nobody wants to spend an hour in a security line, then fifteen minutes or more in the concession stand line, to then sit through twenty minutes of trailers, a two hour movie, and who knows what type of mandated secure exit procedures. This is the problem. Now, do theaters possibly need more staff, some of which would be tasked with security? Maybe. I mean, look at some of these massive 15-30 screen multiplexes. Maybe they are understaffed and ill equipped for emergencies. I just don't think it is a simple case of hire the TSA to pat down moviegoers.

by gotilk
I think they expect a ban on guns that do STUPID amounts of damage, can fire off round after round after round and don't need to be reloaded for several minutes at a time while shooting people. We will never, ever eliminate harm. But we CAN and should reduce harm. But that's just my opinion.

I undstand your wish not to get "Political" Nordling but this is precisely the time toget political. The continued expressions of grief from those in power only emphasise the emptiness of their rhetoric and failure to act.
by borisdoris
When will be the right time to be political? Events like this deserve our sympathies but also a need for action. Maybe your reticence to be political is understandable given what being political results in within the USA. The polarisation of debate to outsiders is truely horrifying. While its clearly not everyone, the HATRED we see ans hear qithin political debate is incomprehensible and quite frankly childiahly simpliatic. Whatever your political affiliation let's grow up. Too often we see opposing sides going epileptic over a diference in opinion. Recently healthcare has seen hateful campaigning. Sides getting violently angry over such thinga to the point that violence never seems far away. Talk of "liberals" "commies" "fascists" only serve to highlight how uninformed and simplistic some of those involved are. You saw in Mcxhael Moores Bowling for Collumbine how say, canadians, with huge number of guns live. Mere mention of Canadians to some of you will be met with igborant smirking, but the kids interviewed in the Canadian street got it right. Americans seem so keen to hate each other. While the media continually pumps fear into everyone. The aimple fact is these idiots look to fill their empty lives with something. Fame, noteriety. The are damaged individuals and are responsible entirely for their actions. But this does not absolve politicians, community leaders nor society of trying to mitigate against these sort of people and prevent it happening again. Just as it is the role of government and community leaders to ensure the ealth of their communities it is their role to protect their lives against crime. Let's cut to the chase. Let's cut the bullshit. Ameeica is a place sick with fear and hatred. Much of it entirely unjustified. Good Americans need protecting. Ans one way to do this is through gun control. NOT necessarily banning but control. Likewise lets some steam out of your own het up asses and chill a little. Life ia too short to get so angry over politics or differences of opinion. Indeed much of the type of talk I hear in those cases is in itself undemocraric. Going against the founding principles of the country as a whole. For everyone's sake let's do something about these shootings etc rather than merely sympathising.

btw, did you know that 12 children were killed in the last minute?
by brightgeist
and the minute before, and the minute before that... because our global economic system is based on inequality. we in these rich countries can only enjoy this good life with movies and everything at the expense of huge parts of the world that live in poverty and starvation. so without meaning any disrespect to 12 people who died in a movie theater, it might also be a good idea for everyone to start thinking a little bit more about those 12 children who starve to death every single minute of every single day. maybe try to put this whole thing in perspective a little better. why does it shake an entire nation when 12 people are killed senselessly, but everyone simply accepts that a child is killed just as senselessly every 5 seconds? is it because those 12 people were americans and those tens of thousands of children who starve to death every day aren't? is it because starvation in some countries is just "the natural order of things"? well, it isn't the natural order of things. it's the direct result of an economic system that only allows for a few winners and demands a lot of losers. it's a zero-sum-game. all money in existence is issued by banks as loans with interest. so there's never enough money in the world to repay all the interest. and this results in permanent competition, because everyone is trying to win the money for the interest from everyone else. it's logical that not everyone can succeed in that, because there's not enough money in existence. so the losers of this game, the poor and starving, are systemic. they are built into the system. and as long as we keep supporting this system, we are all responsible for their deaths. 1 child every 5 seconds. so don't just think you're a good person inside, but start acting differently. stop supporting this system and start speaking out and working for a better one. it's not who you are underneath, it's what you do that defines you.

My plan to see this movie hasnt changed. Looking for grand meaningful gestures to fit this particular tragedy is kind of pointless. I tried looking up statistics for violent crimes in my state and county to have something to site, but really couldnt pull anything from that. The point is, BAD THINGS happen every day and in aggregate, add up to worse than this. Trying to draw specific ties to a theater experience is folly. The only things that will tie this to "going to the movies" is continued discussion of tying it to "going to the movies." This guy was going to shoot up SOMETHING. If it wasnt this type of event, it would have been a farmers market, a tailgate party at a game, a flea market, a church... something. My condolences to the victims of all horrible crimes, even though my sentiment is meaningless to them, but the world and nation are much the same as they were last week. Offhandedly, I would hope that the victims of this set aside ideas of lawsuits for financial compensation from the theater chain and film industry, they had nothing to do with it and couldnt prevent it, but I doubt itll sort out that way.
-
This IS terrible, but the only thing tying this particular tragedy to "the movies" is this assholes decision. He wanted attention, I give him nothing and just add his personal shitstorm to the rest of the fuckheads that want to make life worse for others. Again, my condolences to the victims.
-
i still can´t believe that so many of "our" brothers and sisters haven´t seen the lights go on after the show... I saw kids with a costume running out of the cinema after the shooting and it breaks my heart ... my costume is ready since 2 weeks.... For me im gonna be with them next week when The dark Knight rises in Germany! I will look very forward to, when the lights go on and i will be as closest as i can be to all our missed ones. Their light will go on brighter than anything else on the other side. My deepest good wishes to their families.

He had only been in Denver a short time. He was born and raised and went to h.s. and college in southern and inland California. So not sure that really applies to this case.
-
I've had enough! Time to ban guns. Wait, no, lets just do full body cavity searches at movie theaters. Or just have those body scanners that show your naked body to security guards. You know, I think that there should be armed guards with machine guns patrolling the streets everywhere, at supermarkets and grocery stores, fucking malls and schools too, with portable body scanners and other high tech shit to keep us safe from insane criminals. The odds of being killed must be very high, it happens at least once every 5 years to a hand-full of people in a country of 300 million. I don't think the odds of getting hit by lightning is higher, or is it?
-
He was pretty much head to tow encased in Kevlar. So you have a movie playing, smoke, a psycho shooting and then the audience shooting back more then likely hitting more fleeing audience members then the gunman. Yeah, that sounds so much safer. That would have ended with still a very much alive gunman walking out the emergency exit to wait for police and more dead movie goers and perhaps charges against the audience members who fired by the families of the friendly fire casualties.
-
You're obviously welcome to do what you want but to me your decision seems a bit overreactive. I mean, what if I had said back on September 12, 2001 'I hate airport travel, it's too inconvenient, there's too many crying babies, everyone takes up all the overhead bins, and the airline employees are just plain rude. Yesterday's tragic events were the last straw so I'm never flying again!' It sounds logical, but frankly it also sounds a bit cowardly too. So, no more movie theaters, EVER AGAIN, for you? What if a family member, or that cute co-worker, or your kid wants to go? You're going to refuse just on principle? I guess I see where you're coming from, but I feel sorry for you too for intentionally building up that wall around yourself. Thanks for your time and since I'm posting on AICN let me just say Spider-Man 3 sucked.
-
Only because I'm going to go *next* weekend, to beat the packed crowds. I have little patience for standing in long lines, or getting an awful seat and getting crane neck for two hours. So I plan on catching a first showing next Saturday morning with some friends and family.

I hate that Nordling's awesome post made some of these 2nd Amendment gun nuts proclaim they wished more people carried that night, but let's play...
by DS9Sisko
...Their implication is obvious: if ONLY more people had guns, then they CERTAINLY would have stopped Holmes from doing more murderous damage than he finally did.....Now, let's look a REALITY: Holmes comes into the dark theater dressed in black almost from head to toe. He's wearing a bullet proof vest. He throws cannisters of some kind of gas into the crowd, obscuring the vision of all but only those CLOSEST to him in the dark....In order for the gun fantasists to be right, 1. Any carrying audience member who would have been carrying that night would have to have been CLOSE ENOUGH TO SEE & IDENTIFY THE ATTACKER, 2. Would have been trained and practiced enough & with a good enough aim to take out the attacker who was ALREADY WEARING A BULLET PROOF VEST and 3. Would have been of sound enough mind in all that chaos to not have panicked themselves.... AND there is this: Only a very few people in the theater could see the attacker. So if people in the audience had been carrying and all of them whipped out their guns to take down an attacker the vast majority of them could not see, WHAT would have prevented each of them from firing on EACH OTHER thinking that the other person was the shooter? Or shooting even more innocent bystanders? Or their own loved ones getting caught in the additional crossfire?....The gun nuts NEVER take any of this into consideration...they think of life in terms of John Wayne and Rambo...they believe in the sanitized shootouts in Burn Notice...and thet believe that every gun owner is of clear mind and an expert shot who never makes a mistake...as a gun owner of 30 years myself (taught to shoot by by father and my mother; inherited their guns upon their passing; on two occasions where I had to defend against burglaries several years ago), I support the 2nd Amendment and the right to bear arms...but I'm not a gun nut and I certainly don't support stupidity. I plan on going to see Dark Knight Rises today or tomorrow and if anything were to happen, God forbid, I would rather be one of those people who helped get others to safety than acting like John McClane.

It was horrible, and I was pretty down all day yesterday that something like this happened, again, but no tears came until I read this article and suddenly comprehended that it wasn't just adults in the theater. I know that sounds stupid, maybe it was my brain trying to protect me from the true horror of it, but when I pictured what happened it had always been grownups running in fear, being shot, dying. Reading this made me realize - it was children, some of them probably excited to be doing something a little naughty like dressing up and going to a movie in the middle of the night with dad. What a terrifying, singular glimpse of hell it must have been. You sick fucker, one bullet could have ended all of your despair, anger, self-loathing. Instead you chose to take it out on defenseless people, families, children. Fuck you. I hope they let you live inside your own rotten head for seventy years without medication or counseling, every shadow a demon from hell, every bell a shriek of terror, every image on a TV screen a tantalizing glimpse of normal live that you have separated yourself from forever. Go to hell.

funny how when they're describing what they'd like to do to the "bad guy", the "good guys" of the world come up with the sickest punishments. i assume you guys are joking, though.

noisy, dark, crowded cinema, those people being armed only would have resulted in friendly fire deaths. If you had someone well trained in the cinema with a gun and only that person had a gun, then that person would have likely made a difference.

I personally don't think anyone should own a gun (let alone an assault rifle). America has high gun ownership but a very high number of gun related homicides compared to other OECD countries But I have to admit in places like Switzerland gun ownership works and doesn't have the issues that it does in the US. So basically the middle ground is that guns are not all evil, but basically Americans shouldn't have guns.
-
Chap you and I have had numerous clashes in the past and you are one of the (many) reasons I've largely given up coming to AICN these days. But today I came back expecting to be bemused by some lame-brain comments from Knowles, somehow twisting this tragedy to a personal event in his own life or something as equally dumb. Instead I read your heartfelt piece. And I read it again and again. Genuinely, that was beautifully written and very obviously very heattfelt too. I'd like to thank you for those words and as I cant buy you a beer I'll just salute you as being the reason that I will be at the cinema tonight watching TDKR, at the same time I salute the victims, friends, family and communities affected by this terrible tragedy. Nordling, thank you.

how the fuck is anyone to know who is the "good guy" or the "bad guy" when the bullets start flying. Trust me you don't want everyone to be armed; chaos and confusion will be rampant excuses for taking people out.. you say, "A couple of gangbangers who raised up on him would have stopped this whole thing before it got started." BULLSHIT, then WHOEVER SAW THE GANGBANGERS SHOOTING WOULD SHOOT THEM and so on and so on. I WAS ONLY PROTECTING MY FAMILY OFFICER!
-
No way Obama or Romney will even hint at stricter gun control this close to the election. They both want to be elected President...
-
Certain talkbackers need to stop acting as if this is a uniquely American issue. I can pull up more international mass shootings to prove my point if necessary. THIS HAPPENS EVERWHERE because EVIL PEOPLE EXIST IN ALL NATIONS. Secondly, I think the Captain Hindsight shit needs to stop. People did (and still do) that about 9/11 and I find it in bad taste. None of us knows what would have happened had someone been armed and ultimately it's not important to the issue.

When I saw Batman movie yesterday I was having fantasies
by ajit maholtra
I kept fantasizing that a copycat guy would try to shoot us like the guy in Colorado, and then I would jump out of my seat and fight him like a hero. I would yell, Dont dare do that! and then I would punch him in the face, Pow! Then he'd point rifle at me but Id grab it and Id flip him over and to the ground. Id try to shoot him but hed kick the gun out of my hands. Then wed face off for hand to hand battle with our fists up. My friend would start yelling, Ajit! Ajit! Ajit! Then everyone in the theater would be cheering me on and all the girls would fall in love with me. Just the beautiful ones, not the fat ones. Then we would start fighting. I would punch him, he would punch me. Id start to win, then suddenly, he would do dirty fighting and punch me in my lulla. Id fall to the ground and the beautiful girls would start crying and screaming, Ajit! Noooooooo! And then as bad guy comes close to finish me off Id kick him in the knees, then Id punch him in the face, Bop! The crowd would be cheering so loudly, and finally, Id give him another punch to the head and knock him unconscious and save the day. All the beautiful girls would come running to give me hugs and kisses, and all the guys would come to shake my hand or let me kiss their 3 month old baby. They would all want to be my buddies, and then Id be on the news and I would be famous, and everyone in the country would want to be my buddy!

The guy who was afraid that "now" people would be more inclined to bring guns to theaters is delusional. I was at the midnight show in my town with a 38 special in my pocket, my wife next to me had a gun in her purse as well. The point of conceal carry is to keep it concealed, so dude depending on where you live you are potentially surrounded by people with conceal carry permits and you will never even know it. Now I can say that had this guy come into the theater we were in I doubt we could have made a difference in the chaos and confusion, we are not expert marksmen. We do know how to use our handguns, but have no training for a situation like this. I can think of several scenarios where my carrying may help me escape a horrible situation, but really doubt this would be one of them. Just don't think for a minute that you would know if the guy next to you at work everyday or in any public place has a gun or not.
-
everywhere people can walk into a shop and buy a machine gun. everywhere people can buy body armour and gas masks no questions asked. everywhere people can buy 6000 rounds of ammo online.
-
i sometimes worry a little about "that guy" approaching me down the street might have a knife. you never know... but walking around all day thinking everyone could be packing and could kill you from yards away must be exhausting.
-
A super hero.
-
See, I never worry about "that guy". I never worry about the group of guys hanging on the corner either, one shot is all it really takes to deter that sort. No, I think you misunderstand my meaning. We can never know any strangers intentions in a public place, never know if someone is going to snap. Carrying gives me a sense of calm, never the other way around. I realize that I am not Rambo or Bond, but I do feel I have done everything in my power to protect my family and I from the type of harm that can easily be done to us by our fellow man. My point was that people should never assume what the person next them has in his/her pocket. Nor should we assume that because someone does have a weapon, that they intend to use it for more than protection. I think some people think that guns just "go off"on their own, or that guns can only be used for offense, when in fact the majority of gun owners use them only for defense.

I DON'T GET THE POINT OF A TRIAL
by big_dicks_cum_from_small_beginnings
Just let the inmates get busy. "Remorseless mass-murder suspect James Holmes was locked up alone Saturday over fears that the self-proclaimed Joker would become a target for other inmates. The man accused in the Colorado movie theater massacre was still behaving erratically on the day after his rampage at a midnight screening of “The Dark Night Rises” — the last film in the Batman trilogy. “Let’s just say he hasn’t shown any remorse,” a jail employee told the Daily News. “He thinks he’s acting in a movie.” A released inmate said Holmes’ behavior behind bars was increasingly irrational. “He was spitting at the door and spitting at the guards,” the inmate told The News. “He's spitting at everything. Dude was acting crazy.” Holmes, 24, was also placed on suicide watch in solitary confinement before eating a jailhouse breakfast of grits and sausage, according to a cafeteria worker. Two other just-released inmates said the concerns of Arapahoe Detention Center officials over Holmes’ life were well-founded. “All the inmates were talking about killing him,” Wayne Medley, 24, said as he left the facility. “Everyone was looking for an opportunity. It’s all they could talk about.” Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/aurora-shooting-suspect-james-holmes-jailed-solitary-inmates-talking-killing-article-1.1119173#ixzz21HhCpzWL"

I'll never understand the non-Ron Paul conservative paradox of approving 15 billion dollars a year bombing third world farmers for making a product that are fueled by our suburban yuppies and giving our city and rural poor mandatory 20 years sentences for doing nothing more than fucking up their minds in their own homes, yet merely inquiring whether a mentally unstable individual buying assault rifles and 6000 rounds of ammo in a two month period should be worthy of keeping tabs on is akin to repealing the 2nd amendment. Why do drugs kill people but guns don't?

I can’t get this odd feeling out of my chest. This empty, almost sickening feeling won’t go away. I noticed this feeling when I was in the Eaton Center in Toronto just seconds before someone opened fire in the food court. so you don't have to scroll up, I'll repeat what he or she said: I think the best way to get back at this piece of shit is to completely avoid talking about him. His name? Some asshole. That's it. I'm not interested in his manifesto, or his motive, or his hair color. The victims and their families SHOULD be getting every ounce of attention. You guys wanna honor the fallen? Wipe the shooter's name from your minds and learn the name of one, just one, of them. I've always felt the same way, ever since I learned about the Classical Greek narcissist who destroyed one of the 7 Wonders of the World so his name would live through history. I've never spoken it, even in conversations like this, never given it the oxygen it needs to live in infamy. So following battle_royale's lead, I will never speak the name of this murderous monster. Instead, I want to mention the name of one of the fallen from this terrible incident: Jessica Ghawi, who wanted to be a sports journalist. She used the name Jessica Redfield, because her grandmother wanted to be a journalist, but never had a chance. Now she won't, either. Even sadder is what she posted on her blog once: I can’t get this odd feeling out of my chest. This empty, almost sickening feeling won’t go away. I noticed this feeling when I was in the Eaton Center in Toronto just seconds before someone opened fire in the food court. An odd feeling which led me to go outside and unknowingly out of harm‘s way. It’s hard for me to wrap my mind around how a weird feeling saved me from being in the middle of a deadly shooting. Saved from one, to be the victim of another. The injustice of this, the perversity of fate, makes me want to scream. It's something out of a Thomas Hardy novel, or the appointment in Samara tale. The unfairness makes me want to weep. A young woman, hopeful, a life before her, dreams waiting to be made true..all cruelly, viciously taken away. Nor was she the only one, of course. Each of the other eleven had their own stories, their own hopes and dreams, their own loved ones, their own memories and thoughts and feelings and cherished things. Each of them had a whole world inside their heads, just like each of us. And, now, each of those worlds is ended. Except for their presence, in memory, in our worlds. Choose one of them, and keep their name in your heart, and speak it, from time to time, if only to yourself...and then their world will live again, if only for a moment. Please, instead of cursing, choose a name, speak it...and remember.

If you are sane you shouldn't want one. If you are insane you shouldn't be able to get one. After yesterday's events i've decided to boycott films that glamourise guns. The delicate balance between the rights of the mentally ill and the duty to protect society
by Jo Grant
It was very telling that the mom immediately know that her son was the suspect. Anyone who has had a young adult child who is seriously mentally ill likely knows that it's extremely difficult to get them into treatment against their will. Even if you think they may harm themselves or others. That, ultimately, is where I see "the system" failed the people in Aurora. That is ultimately what is to blame. Not legal gun ownership, not the creators of TDKR, not Obama (don't get me wrong, I won't be voting for him in November).

should really take a look at this: http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/sns-colorado-shooting-keeps-dark-knight-box-office-at-low-end-of-range-20120721,0,2903692.story Might not look like much now, but it's only the tip of the iceberg. Warner Bros have cancelled red carpet premieres the world over, and have ordered cast and crew to pull out of interviews. The film is doing extremely mediocre box office and there's reports of theatres being empty. Considering this is the follow up to the second biggest box office smash of all time - this is news I never thought I would find myself posting. In this article, it hints that the film's overall run in cinemas may be shortened to five or six weeks! Personally after that I predict a rush release to Blu Ray/DVD and no more said on the subject of the actual film. I guarantee no TV network will EVER show it. I know I know. Perhaps posting this news maybe a little crass considering what has happened. I know innocent people died and it's only a fucking movie - but I think Warner Bros are behaving with great dignity on this matter and it has to be said. The days of it being a faceless conglomeration are over. This was obviously the big film they had everything riding on this year - they obviously wanted this to make up for the Harry Potter dollars they aren't going to be getting anymore. Segueing nicely into next years "Man Of Steel". I don't think the likes of Avi Arad and Kevin Feige over at Marvel Studios would make such a grand gesture of contrition - but Warner are willing to take a loss and fall on the sword and I admire them for that. So Nordling, I appreciate the sentiment of your article but I'm afraid the damage has been done. Warners are going to MAKE this film bomb. My sympathy isn't just for the family's of the victims anymore they are also for the Americans in general. I'm a Brit and I LOVE America and the American people. You try to be the home of the free and the land of the brave - and yet you see shit like this and I think "this is the fucking thanks America gets?" I really hope that something is done about the gun laws you guys have, I really do. With shit like Colombine and this - the politicians should stand up and take notice. The second amendment is fine in principal, but not when innocent people are shot in a fucking cinema. You're a great nation and don't deserve to live with this fucking threat.

Everyone is unique and copes in their own way. After what happened to my family in '91, a very wise man told me "work will save you", and to a certain degree, it did. I totally threw myself into my work for the next eight years, and while I made a boatload of cash and helped many others do the same, I never really took the time to grieve properly or process what had happened. When I finally did take the time to work out my feelings, it fucking tore me apart. Still not sure if it was a result of having ignored it for so long or what...all I know is that you have to deal. Whatever it takes, you just find a way to get thru. Life can be un-fair as fuck and my heart goes out to the victims and their families.
-
the movie has been elevated in a way it doesn't even deserve, the news has now become a 24/7 advert for the Dark Knight Rises. It's the movie you almost must see to prove you are not scared and the public will buy into this quasi-threat and turn it into a visceral thrill. If the killings hadn't happened the news would be how disappointing it is but now it's all about coming together by going to the movies even though your chances of being shot are slightly eeked out by the chance of Mike Tyson busting in to bite your ear off.

This film is bombing. And it's not cause people are scared to go to the cinema, it's because they can't get the tragedy associated with it out of their heads. And it's not just in America it's all over the world. I live just outside London and I saw the movie friday night. And whilst I enjoyed it on a critical level and came out with a high opinion of it's overall quality - my opinion was of a critic and not of a fan. And the reason for that was all the way through the movie, I couldn't get out of my mind the tragedy over on your side of the pond (I'm assuming you're American, please correct me if I'm wrong). It tainted the enjoyment of the movie for me, and juding by box office figures I'm not alone. Doesn't matter how great the movie is, this will follow it around forever. Unfair? Totally. But it's just a fact.

http://www.infowars.com/comic-book-industry-dont-blame-batman-for-the-colorado-shooting/ "endisnigh says: July 21, 2012 at 3:04 pm you’re right, it isn’t batman’s fault. he’s just a fictitious character. it’s your fault for creating these monsters. superheroes came about like right before WWII, because humans rejected God and needed some (super)man to save them. and the original villains weren’t supernatural, they were like corrupt politicians and gangsters. it basically started as war propaganda. “Dark Knight was a relentlessly brutal look at urban violence, seasoned with heavy doses of crypto-fascist propagandizing and sexually transgressive imagery. The book’s apocalyptic fury (complete with nuclear warfare) had the emotional impact of a bludgeon, and soon all comicdom was following suit. Superheroes began to shed their naive, kid-friendly aura, and soon became up-to-the-minute urban warriors…likewise, it is probably no accident that the comics boom began to wane as the crack epidemic and the horrific gun violence that accompanied it began to ease in the mid 90s.” – Our Gods Wear Spandex pg 11. Log in to Reply endisnigh says: July 21, 2012 at 3:06 pm and what happened after 9/11? oh, crisis! here comes the hero blitz to save the day! sequel after sequel, remake and remake, AD NAUSEAM. absolutely disgusting. look at the occult stuff in those films. oh yeah and you made a mint off of exploiting it, didn’t you. bastards. actually batman could basically be seen as an preliminary version of a transhumanist, having basic augmentation etc. batman is based off of THE SHADOW. he’s like a maniacal hypnotist, a vengeful spirit. the vigilante archetype is not good, it is lawless and uncontrolled, they glorify the satanic element, like in v for vendetta. can’t you see what they are doing? i am telling you, they are ALCHEMISTS. frank miller admits that batman “has to be a force that in certain ways is beyond good and evil.” moore, kirby, lee, constantly writing about the occult. WAKE UP HUMANS. they told you EVERYTHING BEFOREHAND. IT IS OVER."

it's just from my perspective, the figures coming in don't look good. I think a lot of that money was probably made from advance ticket sales from the opening weekend. We've basically got to see if there's a sharp drop in takings come monday. But with the bad publicity, the dialing back of advertising and media events and reports of empty theatres - I don't think things are leading to a happy place. Anyway, I feel like a cunt for talking about something as trivial as this considering 12 people died and 72 were injured. I'm gonna shut up about it now.
-
We're ALL too obsessed with the BO of movies. When I was a kid we didn't even KNOW how much money a movie made -- just the movie companies knew that -- we just knew if it was a "hit" if it was still in the theater next week. Now we have websites and ET and TV new showing us the gross estimates on FRIDAY - telling us who's going to win the weekend and affecting how the studios take TV ads, some people not going who might of. It's like watching the Stock market. What do we know if it goes up a hundred today and down a hundred tomorrow. I also bring this up because in the face of this tragedy, some self identified "nerds" and "fans" are flooding Boxofficemojo and Bocofficeguru with angry tweets -- that they NEED to see the box office numbers for Batman -- this is what they've been waiting for -- this is what will give their lives fulfillment. Am I the only one who thinks that people have lost sight of what's important? Like when the AVENGERS Blu-Ray will be out?

A six year old died while driving an ATV in Massachusetts...
by Immortal_Fish
...our wonderful MA legislature in their infinite wisdom decided to raise the legal driving age for an ATV from 8 to 10. Cause that law is gonna go a looOOooOOoong way toward preventing 6 year olds dying on ATVs. What does that have to do this latest tragedy? You do the math. BTW, 2 border control agents and over 200 people are dead because of Operation Fast and Furious. No, not the movie. What does that have to do this latest tragedy? You do the math.
-
It had the 3rd highest opening day in history, only surpassed by The Avengers and some Harry Potter movie. On the other hand, it had a massive midnight take and the tragic news has since then caused a decline in attendance.

If anyone that wants a gun in the US is insane, then you live in a lunatic asylum. Statistically, every other household has one. It's your Consitutional Right to own a gun in the US. Saying exercising that right is insane, is the same as calling free speech and democratic elections insane. And I can't think of a single film that glamorizes guns. When they're used in movies, generally the result is pretty horrifying. Nothing glamorous about it. If you're going to skip films just because they have guns in them, you're setting a pretty big number of great films you'll never watch again, let alone great ones in the future. Oh, and might as well throw away your TV while you're at it. The problem isn't films that have guns in them. It's the lunatics that can't comprehend that what they're seeing on screen is just a fantasy. And saying weapons manufacturers and the media are just as much to blame for this kind of thing, is like blaming Ford Motor Company and Jack Daniels when a drunk drives through a crowd of families on a Saturday afternoon at 80mph. More people are killed or hurt in motor vehicle accidents (drunken or not) than guns by far in the US every year. But no one is screaming for a ban on motor vehicles or booze.

Also, WB profited from a death when promoting The Dark Knight
by Ricardo
Now they are facing losses due to deaths. I guess it balances it out.

I'll admit, that first scene of Alfred and Bruce talking in the Batcave made me nervous - according to reports from survivors, that's when the gunman burst in. But the movie was great after that - except for the jerk behind me kicking my seat!

This was a good idea for a thread, and well titled

simple and heartfelt, while showing the proper respect. kudos

Nothing else I could add would be more appropriate than the kudos already expressed here. Cheers for a damn fine post and thread.

Well, not perhaps "bomb" in the strictest sense - but you said the box office has dropped significantly since the tragedy - which was the exact point I was trying to make! Remember, a big percentage of that gross is from pre-ordered tickets. The tickets have been on sale for over a month before it's release and people snapped them up before the shootings happened. Now that that's all over things are going to decline sharply.

isn't funny.

Batman is an anti-gun character. It's sadly ironic
by throatwarbler_mangrove
that people are calling for more people to be concealed carrying regarding this. If only everyone were packing heat to Batman movies, we'd all be safe! It's as bad as people who read superhero comics but are total assholes. They are fans of heroic characters, but can't be arsed to be merely pleasant in their real life.

v3d's ideas, donating to the funds that will be set up for the victims or giving blood (if you are financially or medically able to so), are both excellent...
by kisskissbangbang
...and you can do them in addition to seeing the film, or other symbolic gestures such as the one I suggested. In the short run, such donations are the most important thing we can do, and I wish I'd also said what he did. If neither his nor my ideas appeal to you, please find another way to honor or help the victims, preferably one that comes out of compassion rather than vengeance. Enough blood has been spilt and pain dealt out already.
