Dwayne Johnson Confirms Those LOBO Rumors...

Over the weekend, a follower over on Dwayne Johnson's Twitter stream inquired about rumors that Johnson would play interstellar merc/bounty hunter Lobo in a long-gestating bigscreenification of DC's nearly 30 year old property of the same name.
Johnson's reply:
Rumors of me possibly playing LOBO are true. Joel Silver and Brad Peyton working on it now. That could be fun.. #RockTalk
Peyton and Johnson recently worked together in the spectacular, clever, and fun JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND and look to be re-teaming for its space-themed sequel - due in theaters 2014.
There have been murmurings and innuendo that Johnson might be attached to the Lobo role for some time - the the best of my knowledge this is as close as we've yet come to an official confirmation.

I want the screen painted red, goddamn it. With BLOOD!!!

Because that would be cool too.

its going to suck there is no hope

Here's a link to a fan-made version of the "Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special". It is surprisingly not terrible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuRIJA7KyHE

...and we'll never get the cool as hell Rock actioner we envisioned back in the day...
-
Love Lobo would love to see this film
-
picture for a second how weird Johnson will look with white skin. It works on the comic character because A) it's a comic, and B, the character has a caucasian-esque face. I say they cop out and have him go natural after they do make up tests and see he looks like an outtake from White Chicks

We are officially making too many comic book movies
-
He's right for the part, cheaper (for the suits) and it'll keep him away from jl's Superman. On which note...
-
The character has none of the relevance that he did when they first started talking about this.
-
Armie Hammer for JL's Superman.
-
Robbie (Cummings) looked like a dead ringer to the extent of thinking that it was intentional.
-
Who should play Martian Manhunter? Mr Clean?
-
WB can't get it's collective shit together for a Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, Justice League, Teen Titans, Supergirl or Batgirl movie. But Lobo...LOBO thay can make. Oye.
-
Its pointless.
-
Yeah, what the first guy said. A real no-shit Lobo movie would truly be a beautiful thing. But you know that's never going to happen. Especially with Dwayne "Toothfairy/Rock/OtherShittyMovie" Johnson in the lead role. I've totally lost all hope he was going to be a legit action star. This shit needs to be directed by Verhoeven or Rordriguez or something and starring fucking Mickey Rourke as Lobo and it needs to be a cross between an X-Rated Machete (in space) meets a 2 hour episode of Metalocalypse meets every Arnold move from the 80's and then MAYBE it'll do the comic justice. Instead we're probably going to be treated to a movie along the lines of Pluto Nash with the Rock spouting a bunch of one-liners. We'll see a bunch of lame interviews leading up to the movie saying how "faithful" they are to the comics (you know they won't be). They'll probably get someone like Vril Dox to be in the movie and have a scene showing Lobo fight Santa in the preview (it'll be a 2 minute flashback joke scene) so they can appeal to "the real fans". And people will get excited. But you know it's going to suck ass. Once the PG-13 rating is reveled though, I'm sure people will snap out of that.

by Cletus Van Damme
The only part Dwayne Johnson fits is the physique from the neck down.
-
or do their ipods and kindles and what-have-you do that now?
-
And I'm sure I get ripped for this, but I actually dug Brad Garrett's Lobo from WB's animated Superman. Yeah he was PG but still a lotta' fun. Now, let's crank that attitude and sick sense of humor to an R... THEN, we'll have something.

Godamn it. I wanted him to be Black Adam. That's who he looks like that's who he basically played in the Mummy movies. This is a bad decision on his part. Along with those terrible kid movies.. He needs a person to sit him down and tell him not to except every script that goes in front of his face. I thought that was what mangers are for. But apparently his ex-wife/manager is trying to tank his career.
DAMN! DAMN! DAMN!!!

Lobo's comics were initially not for sale under 18 cuz o'violence. Yeah. Give us a nice, cheap (50-70 million dollar) flick with gore and kickasserie galore. Oh yeah. NO TEENAGE GIRL ON EARTH !!!! 'Nuff Said....

it's true, the character is no longer relevant enough. Your average teenaged film goer is going to look at that picture above and ask "When did Juggalos start working out?"

Does the Rock even have a career left after all the Disney crap he's been mucking around in?
by wcolbert
Not that I have an issue with Disney movies - it's just that the ones he's been in are sort of bottom of the barrell, embarassing even for kids types of movies. IMO. Tooth Fairy? Wtf... That said...the role doesnt seem to fit. He should be choosing roles that play on his natural charisma (of which he is in no short supply) - but physically he just doesnt look the part at all. The problem with any role the Rock an take is that...no matter what he does, he just looks like a big Samoan/ Hawaiian wrestler hamming it up. He's great to watch - I enjoy his charisma - but he's really not much of a chameleon and as such has a pretty limited range. Some guys have range. I never would have thought Will Smith could play Ali and a goofy MIB Agent and the Fresh Prince in one career and still have a career. But part of that is that he is physically somewhat non-descript. There's nothing that stands out that much about him. With the Rock though....as with Arnold before him...playing some FBI agent or everyday man or whatever just...it's weird. Because they are these larger than life guys. Now, Lobo isnt an everyday guy, but I cant really see the Rock adapting his physical appearance to the point where he looks like anything but Dwayne friggin Johnson.
-
...Is where I see this going. They will try to make it based in the real world. They will make him only hunt Humans. He will drive a shitty Harley Davidson.
-
List of actors better suited.... Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Andy Serkis over a CGI LOBO...

This movie will be shit.

I Love The Lobo Character and I Love Dwayne Johnson But...
by Trey Smith
...I really don't see Johnson as this character. I don't think he has the personality for Lobo. So I think that this would be a waste for him and D.C. because I honestly don't see it being good. With another actor that fits the profile more closely, yes but not with Johnson. Honestly in my mind the only D.C. character I can see Johnson playing is Black Adam. He would make a spectacular fucking Black Adam. And what's great about the Black Adam Role is it will afford Johnson to take part in a "Marvel Family Franchise," playing Black Adam across from whom ever would get the Cap role as well as doing at least one stand alone Black Adam film. So my point is it would secure a nice multi-film contract for Johnson. I honestly don't see Lobo showing up in any Supes films or any thing else for that matter besides Lobo. That's all.
-
We all said the same thing about Ledger/The Joker. I honestly think it all comes down to the director and the choices they make. Nolan is a more than capable director who knew exactly what he was looking for and understood the subject matter of what he was filming. If these guys understand Lobo, it will work. If not, it will be an epic fail. Personally, I think Johnson is wrong for the part. But I was wrong about Ledger too..
-
Maybe it's time to give the "plant" call a rest for a little while, I don't know. I mean, now that Spider-Man's made half a billion the SONY plants are probably on hiatus for a bit, but WB plants for Lobo? Really?
-
@billandted, thanks for the tip. THAT is the Punisher film that needs to be made. I normally detest reboots, but just toss out everything and go straight to the world of that short film - Ron Perlman included. Marvel seems intent on going out into space next - which is great - but I'd like to see them also scale it down. Make a lower tier of connected films in the world of Punisher, Daredevil, Falcon, Kingpin, and then get the damn rights to Spidey back and have him be the glue that connects that world to the Avengers world. Marvel, Sony, Fox, just get over yourselves and make it so.

DC characters not yet made into a movie: The Flash, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl, Justice Society, Shazam/Captain Marvel, Doctor Fate, Hawkman, Animal Man, Swamp Thing (not counting the '80s ones), Teen Titans, Justice League, and many others. And yet you are working on a Lobo movie? Who wants to see that?! Let alone with a terrible director and a lame star. Get with the program Warners/DC. Your comics are better than Marvel's these days, but with the exception of Batman, you're not getting the movies right. Hopefully The Man of Steel will be amazing. But no one loved (and few even liked) Green Lantern. Do characters fans actually care about and do them well. And stop taking so long. Marvel has already done a bunch of their characters right. You've done Batman and that's it. You already messed up by canceling Joss Whedon's Wonder Woman (I bet you regret that now, after The Avengers). Take the time to get it right and get the right talent involved, but don't take forever. And nobody cares about a PG-13 Lobo movie starring The Rock.

by wcolbert
And not a bright or creative one, at that. This sounds exactly like one of the casting suggestions that some idiot would post on youtube - the same kinds of index-card morons who go "Oh, who should play Vegeta in a dragonball adaptation? OH I KNOW! Jet Li! Cause...cause he's Asian and knows martial arts!" "Who should play this or that Superhero?" "Oh I KNOW! *Insert name of douchey looking MMA fighter with virtually no acting ability* Because he's got big muscles and knows how to fight!" The kind of people who immediately jump to a well known sports star or wrestler or a well known martial artist simply because the movie involves a muscular hero or martial arts- with virtually no thought given to whether the person LOOKS right, can ACT properly in the role, or has any business being in a movie at all. It's like saying "Who should play Superman?" "OH! DERP! I KNOW! It should be this MMA fighter cuz he gots like, teh big muscles and he's tall an stuff! Tat wuld be AWSUM! Or tis guy cuz he's 6'5" and haz a big chin!" Fucking ameteurs, I swear.

Pass on this ROCK and get your brother out of DTV hell. Just paint Austin blueish white, let him do what he does best which is drink a beer and stomp a mudhole in somebodies ass. If you don't realize his potential for this kind of material then you're just a pathetic piece of trash that needs its little ass whipped. And that's the bottom line cause Stone Cold said so! Sorry..not sure what happened there. Channeling the Rattlesnake I guess.

EDIT BUTTON, I AM DISAPPOINT
-
Now I know that. a PG Lobo movie starring The Rock sounds like a recipe for disaster alla John Carter. I would have preffered to see Michael Keaton play the roll of Lobo and had his head plastered on a CGI body that looked like the Hulk. I think that would have worked so much better and everyone here would be siked over it. Granted I'll still give it a watch as all of you here will so I guess it really doesn't matter one way or another. This might actually be better than the new Superman movie when its all said and done.A cameo wouldn't hurt either to give each others movies a boost.
-

Rock's an aged fratboy. He has a grand physique, but he's too posh to play a LEGIT hardass, and not just some HGH fiend with good genes and athleticism. And he lacks the acting chops to channel anyone who isn't a GQ-inspired cock-in-the-ass.
by Pvt. Duke
Has anyone ever seen him act? He's the most transparently crafted persona since Julia Roberts.
-
This is a franchise meant for Robert Rodriguez. After 'Machete' I just can't think of anyone who could get it right. If he made 'Lobo' as a kind of 'Machete in Space' movie, it could be such sweet depravity on a Star Wars scale.

I loved LOBO back in the day and have about a half-box of comics related to him
by Autodidact
I think he's totally ripe for an adaptation, and given his cosmic nature it might be a way to make GL cool again. Maybe after 90 minutes of LOBO raising Mayhem, GL captures him at the end. If it works, GL is cool again for the run-up to Justice League. I have basically all comics with LOBO in the title and all his appearances from 1988 to 1994/5. I think I actually have his first or second appearance in LEGION. Lots of other LEGION stuff, a couple years of THE DEMON, and any time he crossed over into other titles (Superman, mostly). I also have a copy of Vengeance of Bane knocking around somewhere that's been sitting bagged and boarded in a box for 20 years. Given that a mint copy went for $1100 on ebay recently, I should dig it up.

who in the f#ck, especially these days, would water down a mature property like Lobo?? Hollywood execs, man: f#cking idiots. Make a kid's version, and NO one will see it - fans of the book obviously won't, and kids won't because they have no idea who the f#ck Lobo is. So infuriating.

-
I agree he is perfect to play Lobo. The Hollywood execs are sleeping once again. Rock is ok, but he is no Lobo. It's time Rock got his own character like Stallone has Rocky, Rambo and Cobretti or like Statham has the Transporter and Chelios.
-

Why can't hollywood make a cool CGI Lobo movie, they have the technology, and Lobo could look like Lobo.
by cameron
I'm still sitting with crossed fingers for Fincher to dust off his 'The Goon' project, the trailer for that was perfect. These comic book characters are perfect for CGI, i don't know why they make live action movies with actors looking ridonkulous in costumes that only work in comics. Iron Man & Hulk are CGI th the movies & the DC On Line CGI trailer just shows you how insanely cool the characters look when done with decent CGI. Lobo CGI movie with Jeffrey Dean Morgan voicing Lobo. Easy.
-
.....I could say The Rock looks nothing like Claude Akins, but then, he didn't look like Buford Pusser but was still able to pull off Walking Tall. Who will play Deputy Perkins, and will Greg Evigan have a cameo as B.J. McKay?
-
Tons of bloodshed, ear-crushing metal music, NO EARTH and a bunch of intergalactic destruction. That's what a LOBO movie needs to be. Make it the Heavy Metal of the new millennium.
-
July 17, 2012, 10:44 a.m. CST
Yeah if they did a mo-cap CGI LOBO movie, it could be hard R-rated and still make a lot of bank from blu-ray/downloads

And it could probably be cheaper overall than filming live action.

Paul Giammatti would be the obvious choice. But, if Rob Courdrey put on a few pounds, he'd be good too. Maybe even Zach Galifanapigus.
