FIGHT CLUB dvd tidbits

Published at:  Apr 17, 2000 10:07:57 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Here's a few tidbits about the FIGHT CLUB dvd from the perspective of a fella that took an advance look at the FIGHT CLUB videotape... that's release is... right 'round the ol corner. Here ya go...

I work at blockbuster video, and normally we get upcoming movies 8 days
before their scheduled release (we need time to prep them). And today, low
and behold, I open up one of our boxes in today's shipment and see the Fight
Club VHS. Now I know most of you don't give a rat's ass about VHS (neither
do I) but allow me to continue...

After work, I took the tape over to a friends, and we popped it in. First
we were treated to the X-MEN trailer (the sucky teaser) and a few other
previews not really worth mentioning and suddenly out of nowhere comes a
preview of the FIGHT CLUB DVD! I almost dropped a load into my shorts.
First the announcer said this will be David Fincher's director's definitve
edition (meaning he had FULL imput). Now I could be mistaken but then they
showed (rather too quickly) what looked like the DVD's main menu screen (I
had to pause to get a good look b/c it was so quick) but it was a Fight Club
menu so I assume they've finished that part of the disc already. It had
those weird Fight Club colors everywhere. Cool indeed.

Next the announcer mentioned the disc would include commentary with Brad
Pitt, Edward Norton and David Fincher. Now I had heard there would be a
track with just Fincher by himself, then a track with Fincher, Pitt, and
Norton together, and also 2 more tracks with the dust bros. and the author
of the novel (forget his name). Now either the seperate tracks aren't going
to be there or, just for the sake of marketing (who really cares about the
novel's author or dust bros. other than us film geeks?) the announcer
decided to ommit the info. I hope the latter is the case.

Anyway, next he said there'd be exclusive mini documentarie(s) included as
well as deleted scenes (this was already reported). Another thing I noticed
was they showed another different menu screen for the deleted scenes and
documentaries section. What's so cool is that they're using the opening
brain credit sequence from the film as a background animation for these
particular menu screens! They looked insanely cool! A few snipets from the
documentaries were shown, including:

- Fincher blocking a scene with Ed Norton and Jared Leto (their big fight
together). Ed and Jared were in normal everyday clothing (jump suits,
shirts etc.) so I'm sure Fincher was just blocking because he had a camera
set up and was practicing camera coverage (on a dolly) of their rehearsal.

- Brad Pitt sporting a beard, wearing boxing gloves, punhing the camera.
Having some fun I guess.

- Behind the scenes shot of the car wreck.

Then he said the DVD would be out June 6th. That's about it. Awesome.
Also... watching all of this, I gather that FOX isn't bull shitting around
when it comes to marketing this thing. They want EVERYONE to buy it. Looks
as if this might be the best special ed. DVD to date. The Abyss could've
had the honor had FOX opted for an ANAMORPHIC transfer like Fight Club but
nooooooo! You'd think the way some studios treat the anamorphic issue
(cough!...Fox... cough!) they consider it to be an extra feature. Sigh. I
hope they improve on this.

And one more thing. Watching this powerhouse of a film reminded me of just
how terrible VHS looks compared to DVD or even LD for that matter and why
I've almost abandoned the format all together.

PS. Fight Club was robbed at the oscars.

    by rusty_kaufman

I don't want to go so far as to call this post bullshit. But I have owned the preview VHS for Fight Club for about a month now, and have watched it repeatedly, despite the shit quality of a P&S transfer that butchers Fincher's superb direction. I just love this film. Anyway, as far as openers on the cassette, there is a small Making-Of featurette, with Norton, Meatloaf, & Carter being interviewed. (Strangely, Pitt & Fincher are only seen in the cutaway scenes of the making of the film.) Following this, there is a montage of Coming Soon trailers. No mention of a Fight Club DVD at all. Now, of course, Fox could have changed the contents of the VHS prior to the actual rental copies hitting the shelves. But with this preview cassette that I have, I was under the impression that this was to show the rental chain owners what they would be getting when they ordered the title. In any event, this DVD set is going to kick my ass. LONG LIVE THE STARKILLER!!!! May The Force Be With You...Always!!

    Rusty-
Just wanted you to know that what you are talking about is the screener of Fight Club. I work at Hollywood Video and we've had it for a while too. What FilmDreamer is talking about is the actual VHS rental version. Video stores get them a bit early (usually a week or so) so we can prep them, and get them into the computer systems. Fight Club comes out NEXT tuesday (4-25), so it isn't surprising that Blockbuster has theirs already. Ours usually come the Thursday before release.

  • I hereby give praise to FOX. ALL HAIL FOX!! First, the ALIEN box set. Spec-fucking-tacular. Then, the Abyss. Brilliante! And now...the reason I paid so much money for a DVD player is just around the corner. I praise Fox, and encourage others to do the same. It's called positive reinforcement people, and we must use it to make sure FOX treats us so well in the future (now if only those bastards at Paramount would come around).

    alternate ending?

    by josephtdm

The character shot himself in the cheek, not the skull. For that matter the alternate ending should be the ending from the book. The buildings do not fall down and edward nortons character finds himself locked away in a mental institution a la catcher in the rye. The doctors are god and all of the worker intern people have black eyes and tell him that they look forward to his release and that project mayhem is doing great and is waiting for him.

This DVD is going to be incredible, to say the least.

btw, the author's name is Chuck Palahniuk. I hope he has a commentary track, because he is the brains behind all of the beautiful madness.

I NEED the DVD because I am so sick of watching my not-perfect screener copy of a copy.

    Not a bandwagon

    by cruel shoes

DVD took off because of a bunch of reason. It was about $400 more for the lowest end LD than lowest end DVD. Only now do I see LD's as low priced at $20. But I remember the Ghostbusters LD going at $120 (DVD - $35). Plus who wants to flip the disc every 40 minutes? Seems archaic, interrupts the flow of the movie and a long mother like The Abyss? Forget it. Plus those menus on the DVD's are awfully pretty. And they play my CD's.

    Alternate Ending Myth

    by zinema

There is no alternate ending to "Fight Club." It might have been scripted, but it was never shot. And as such, no alternate ending appears on the DVD. There are several other cool deleted/alternate scenes though.

    by payndz

Wow. Too bad that here in the UK, we only get the RENTAL release of the DVD in June (with absolutely no extras whatsoever) and have to wait until November for the retail DVD. Which will probably be missing the commentary (like The Matrix) because the BBFC will have cut so much out that the audio will run out of sync. Still, I don't care because I'll have bought the Region 1 DVD anyway. Bwah hah and, indeed, hah!

There was no musical number in the book. You're wrong about that. Man on the Moon was good for one watch, but Fight Club is a must own. BTW, you know that project mayhem was behind that whole oscar theft. I won't tell you what they did to the statues while they had them!!

    by iamdeadfish

*scoff* You don't know??!! Geez, what kinf of a human are you??!! Naw, just kidding, I'm actually not real sure myself. The impression that I have is something like this: Regular widescreen actually has the black bars that fill in the top and bottom of the screen as part of the image data on the disk. But the animorphic only has the video itself on it and let's the DVD player put in the bars (if needed). The advantage for this would be since you only have (let's say something like) 400 lines of resolution for the image, you can save them all for the chunk in the middle that actually changes - thus a better image. But then again, I'm mostly pulling this out of my ass. I could be TOTALLY wrong. (let me know if I am or not, so I know for sure.)

The real movie that got robbed at the Oscars...

    by vegas

...was not Fight Club (my favorite movie of all time, but even I realized it wasn't going to win a damn thing after thinking about it for twenty minutes), but THREE KINGS. Should have been nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay at least.

    anamorphic and author's commentary

    by harrysgreenshoes

I, for one, hope that the author's commentary isn't cut on the final version. That's the main reason I'm looking forward to this disk. After reading the book, I assumed this film would be nominated at the very least least for best adaptation. Highway Robbery.

Anamorphic refers to the method the image is captured, when a film is lensed in anamorphic...they use a non-spherical lens to squeeze a wider picture into the 35mm frame. Then in projection, a similar lens expands the image to the correct aspect ratio. When a DVD is anamorphic, it's exactly the same way, the DVD electronicly converts the image to the correct aspect ratio adding the bars to the top and bottom of the frame to fill your television screen. The advantage of this being that if you have a 16x9 television, the picture fills the entire frame and no letterboxing is needed. In the menu of most DVD players you can turn the anamorphic conversion off and if your disk is anamorphic it will appear as if everything is squeezed together. Give it a try and see what it looks like. Hope that explains a little.

Anybody know why the soundtrack lacked

    by 0007

Tom Waits' song "Goin' out West", even though it was featured in the film? It was so perfect in context, and with Waits' music being about the best you can find, why was it omitted from the album? Fincher should have opted for all Tom's selections to tell the story. Then those record management types would have had no choice but TO put it on there...

    Something that's weird...

    by darken

I know, this sounds really stupid but how come Fight Club is being snubbed even at the goddamn MTV movie awards? I know... MTV movie awards. I mean for christsake you would've thought there they'd get a fair shake. Nope. Nothing for Edward Norton or Brad Pitts performance, movie nods or anything. Not even a nod for best on-screen duo! ACK! Yet for some reason people consistently keep talking about this movie. Even if it didn't exactly break box-office records, people still talk about it more than most films from 1999 which says a lot actually. And how come MTV awards ignored Election too. I mean Jesus, they fucking produced that one! Mainstream people suck.

Forget all that stuff about all of the fun stuff that's going to be on the DVD, I need to know what this guy was talking about when he said either Ed Norton or Jared Leto was wearing a JUMPSUIT in the placement shot? Who in the hell wears jumpsuits as casual attire? What is this, 1982? And to the guy who was complaining about how much Fight Club sucks, who is the bigger loser, someone who likes Fight Club or someone who hates Fight Club yet still goes to the effort to read about what is going to be on the DVD? Your doing it to yourself, buddy.

    Deleted Scenes, Commentaries...

    by rusty_kaufman

If the information at the David Fincher website was correct about 2 months ago, there WERE alternate endings filmed. THREE endings, to be precise. And as far as the commentaries go, the info that was on the Chuck Palahniuk website was that there were to be 5 seperate commentary tracks. One for Fincher, one for the Dust Brothers (with Isolated Score), one for Pitt, one for Palahniuk, and one for Carter. Whether or not FOX has decided to change this in the past month, I do not know. But that was the information from the director and author's websites. LONG LIVE THE STARKILLER!!! May The Force Be With You...Always!!

    incorrect info

    by lazarus long

I'll eat my hat if there's a commentary solely with Helena Bonham Carter. I highly doubt that. As for the whole anamorphic thing, why would anyone want to watch a full screen of squeezed together picture? Like when they roll credits of old films on TV. That would look like shit, no? This will be the best DVD ever. Until the Star Wars releases.

    by kiwi man

The picture doesn't necessarily fill the screen on 16*9 TVs...it mainly increases the resolution by about 33%. You usually don't see any differences with normal 4*3 TVs.

Oh, and I don't see why people are suprised over Fight Club's lack of MTV noms...for the most part, the people MTV cater to didn't see, let alone understand, the movie. Same goes for Election.

    by the muts nuts

I am really looking forward to the Fight club DVD
and yet I haven't seen it. Why, because I live in England where the BBFC have deemed the film too violent in it's uncut form. So rather than watch a butchered version I thought i'd wait for the region one disc to be released.
Then with no warning whatsoever some TWAT tells you how it's gonna end. To add insult to injury you go and do it TWICE...

    think club

    by silenciumt

ja ja ja... artistically, the movie is made quite interrestingly. Some of the ideas are new enough to add a refreshing surprise element, and indeed, even some intelligable speech!

But then you get down to it?

It's pretty much yet another fringe about the - yawn - twisted male psyche.

The poor modern male, who just doesn't know what to do with all the emanzipated females around him - complaining about the women around him and yet unable to leave them alone. We have yet to see males raising humans eficiently.
It's heavily spiced with homo-eroticism and incomprehensible self-mutiliation/masochism, and the well documented male agression (which we know is a genetic defect!).

All in all, the story itself is about mental illnes and not so bad really, but it's going to attract the wrong imbecille adolescent male crowds...

    Fight Club...pah.

    by gareth davies

I have not seen, nor do I have any interest in seeing a film that revels in Sin, glorifies violence and mocks those with serious mental illnesses. This film is barren, barren of soul and barren of love. I have seen a TV trailer for this move so I know what I'm talking about. Christ Jesus is your only hope for salvation, and it is a sad day when hollywood, which has produced so many great movies(Cecil B Demille's ten commandmnents - now that was a movie) produces such a vile aberration. If you have and christian decency, you would not even consider purchasing this abomination of a film on DVD or, for that matter any Format.
