STAR TREK Writer Roberto Orci: Cumberbatch is NOT Playing Gary Mitchell!! But Alice Eve Is Playing A Character We've Met Before!!

Roberto Orci, screenwriter of the previous and next Star Trek movies, confirmed to TrekMovie.com what Orci told me June 23 on KERN-AM radio: Benedict Cumberbatch will not play Gary Mitchell in the next Star Trek movie.
Karl Urban, who plays Dr. McCoy in the new movies, joked July 9 that Cumberbatch would be playing Mitchell. Many journalists took Urban’s comment seriously.
"He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary,” Urban jested when asked about Cumberbatch's Trek character during a "Dredd" promotion.
“I would say that I never lie,” Orci told TrekMovie July 14 when asked about the radio interview he gave me, “while Karl tests all those hypo spray props on himself.”
Numerous reliable non-Urban sources indicate that Cumberbatch is playing Khan Noonian Singh, the role created by Ricardo Montalban in the Trek TV series and the second Trek movie.
Orci tells TrekMovie also that there is a “final list” of potential titles for the next Trek movie, but “only one or two” do not contain the words “Star Trek.”
“For the most part all the titles we are considering do have Star Trek in them, but just to get crazy we need to consider crazy things,” said Orci.
TrekMovie also played a game similar to the one we used with Orci, this time asking Orci which actors are playing new characters and which are playing characters we’ve met before. The results:
ACTORS PLAYING CANON CHARACERS:
Alice Eve
Benedict Cumberbatch
ACTORS PLAYING NEW CHARACTERS:
Noel Clarke
Nanzine Contractor
Peter Weller
Joseph Gatt
Because Orci told me Janice Rand is not in the next Trek -- and because Eve is hot and blonde -- I inevitably image she’s playing Carol Marcus, the ex-lover of James KIrk menaced by Khan in "Star Trek II."

Going full on geek here, the Star Trek timeline was altered so much by Nero's attack that damn near nothing from the original series should even be referenced. No Khan, no Carol Marcus, no Finnegan... If all Abrams wanted to do were remakes, why not just reboot instead of the time travel?

And a really nice, down to earth, regular kind of guy, with a great sense of humour. And as such I have no doubt whatsoever that he just likes fucking with the fans. Because he's a fan of many of these geek-centric properties himself, and knows full well how easy it is to get us all up in a lather over something. The fact that he also knows that anything he says will be taken as 100% serious by a press corp desperate for 'breaking' news is just another part of the joke. Regardless, he was the best thing in NuTrek for my money, so I hope that they give him more screentime and more to do this time around. Looking forward to Dredd more and more the more good word I hear about it too.

If Cumberbatch is Khan then that's ridiculous. Regardless of whether you liked or loathed Abrams' first, it was a fresh Trek movie with a new story. With Khan brought into the fold it can only be a retread.

If they were going to do all of that time travel nonsense....
by Trying_It_Again_Part_2
....Then why the hell not go back and undo what Nero had done? Why not go back and save Vulcan, and stop Nero before he even starts? The story in the first one was riddled with time travel variables, then all of a sudden, the destruction of Vulcan and the damage caused by Nero was so absolute. I call bullshit. I liked the film initially, but things have a tendency not to sit right after a while when dealing with a time travel plot.

and thought OH SHIT!!! THE BORG QUEEN!!! Then i realized that was Alice Krige :(

Bitching about the next Trek movie being a Wrath of Khan retread is the ultimate in stupidity. Why? Because Wrath of Khan was a FUCKING SEQUEL TO THE TOS EPISODE "SPACE SEED." Think about it for five god damn seconds. Jesus.
-
I don't believe it's Khan. And even if it was, how is meeting Kirk for the first time going to build up 15 years worth of rage that the original had in a 2 hour movie? No way ST2 will *EVER* be topped. It's better to stay away from that altogether and develop some unique story-lines.
-
Beam me up Kyle.
-
Accept it.
-
He didn't say the titles without ST had to be serious!
-
I know Abrams entire career is built around just rehashing ideas from his youth, but can we just skip stealing the most obvious stuff at least? That said, I think Herc (I think it was Herc) actually had an interesting idea for Kahn, which was that future Spock dispatches the Federation to retrieve the hibernating Kahn and crew and repurposes them into being a Federation Seal Team 6. We'd get Kahn without the rehash, or at least without as much of the rehash.
-
Nothing too incredible - just really nice to know that the people involved appreciate how much of a life that show has created for itself since it went off the air. That and it was cool to hear that Dark Horse wants more comics.

Have you ever seen a JJ Abrams/Kurtzman/Orci/Lindelof project that had a unique storyline? What they do is take concepts beloved to millions, shred them and dumb them down to cater to the lowest common denominator. Mission Impossible, Star Trek, Transformers... years from now we'll all look back and wonder why audiences (by and large) lapped up their shit. Name me one line of memorable dialogue from any of those projects? If they are truly taking on Khan then they just shot themselves in the foot, there is no fucking way anything they can do can compare with Wrath of Khan.
-
Everyone (including me) has been focussing on Benedict Cumberbatch's potential role, but Alice Eve has recently become an actor in major A-list movies. They are not going to give her a minor role. So, what (important) canon character could she be in the same movie as Cumberbatch as a canon character? Khan is obvious. Too obvious? Could it be...?... Oh shit, the bottle is empty. Time to open another one, then I'll be back.

The reason they're being so secretive about Cumbernuts...
by buggerbugger
...is because they don't want to reveal that they're rehashing the episode where the Enterprise visits the Roman Empire planet and Clamberpants is playing mad-ugly Emperor Caligulon or whoeverthefuck. I'm at a loss to explain why people largely went nuts for the last 'Trek' movie. It was as if the producers took all the shittiest bits of the original 'Trek', promptly threw them away and replaced them with all the shittiest bits of something else instead.
-
He'll play a red-shirt, so he'll get killed and he's black, so he'll get killed first.
-
I liked that theory a while back that Cumberbach was not playing Khan but Khan's righthand guy (forget his name) and Khan dies early on and the number2 augment guy becomes the uber baddie for this movie Cumberbach does look a lot like that guy, and it would be a way to address khan while subverting expectations in a way that I think would appeal to JJ, lindleoff, orci etc.
-
It's one of two things. One, Cumberbatch is playing "Gary Seven" and Alice Eve is playing the Terri Garr character/secretary who finds out his secret. Hence, Urban's confusion during his interview. Wrong Gary.

Two: they hired Cumberbatch to play a descendent of Sherlock Holmes, who I think showed up in "Star Trek" a few times somehow. Maybe he escaped from the holo-deck and he's decided to set off the Genesis device.
-
Who is totally bored with this whole movie's coverage already? I don't care who anyone's playing any more. JJ's first Trek was fun, but disposable. I expect nothing more from this.
-

It's just a movie.
-
They would move the movie up to a holiday release! I know its in post production but its feasible I think.

That's canon in JJ's world.
-
Maybe he just got the last name wrong. Maybe they can use his time travel abilities to go back and save Vulcan.

Abrams isn't thinking of anything except buzz, marketing, and name recognizability. Therefore, it'll be Khan.
by whyamihere
Can anyone really look at his history of movie production and tell me that he's NOT thinking that way?
-
Alice has got to be either a certain Nurse or a certain Yeoman. I'm still going with Lazarus for Cumberbatch.
-
Two other characters that Alice Eve could be playing. One qualifies as the old recurring character, Nurse (later Doctor) Chappel. I don't think she appeared in the first movie. However I think she might be the least likely just because she was Majel Barrets character. (well one of) The other far more likely possibility. If we are going back to the beginning with Khan. Then it could be his "Wife" Lt. Maria McGivers.
-
There's literally a whole galaxy of villains the Enterprise could encounter, and they're rehashing Kahn?
-
Klingons, Romulans and Harry Mudd. The most memorable episodes generally didn't involve a specific villain the the classic sense. Maybe Cumerbatch is playing Bella Oxmyx? LOL!
-
Even if the second Trek movie does feature Khan - it's foolish to assume that the Khan character ( or the movie's plot ) would even remotely resemble Wrath of Khan. W.O.K is, to an extent, a pretty simple revenge story driven by strong character narratives and performances that just.work.brilliantly. Trek 2009 placed no importance on character narratives or plot coherence. It completely trivialized a central piece of Trek mythology ( Kirk's Kobayashi Maru test(s) ), " re-interpreted " the central characters ( Spock in a relationship with Uhura ), and abandoned all pretense at having an actual science component to the "Science Fiction". If the second Trek movie is a Khan story then the Genesis device won't be needed because Reliant will just be running around the galaxy spraying red matter on rogue planetoids. Ceti Alpha V will be menaced by ambulatory, semi sentient marshmallow eels because these things just aren't important to the writers who, if my memory serves, have no grounding ( or real interest ) in science/Science Fiction whatsoever. Look at the quality of their other work - Transformers I/II, Cowboys & Aliens, Van Helsing, Mission Impossible..Xena.... they deserve some credit for Fringe however. The next S.T. movie - whoever is in it or whatever the plot - will concentrate on funny moments between the main characters ( I imagine this is called " spirit ", lots of lens flare, Alice Eve in various states of undress ( and why not, she's stunning ), zippy explosions a retro design Enterprise. What won't be present is a convincing plot ( the S.T. sequence of events and character "motivations" is just... bizarre ), incisive dialogue, or even a half convincing villain ( S.T. criminally wasted Bana - I watched the movie again recently and I was embarrassed for him - this is the guy who did Munich, Blackhawk Down, Hulk ... - all excellent character studies ( for his part )... unbelievable. The simple truth. Put away your preconceptions and your memories of W.O.K. and Star Trek generally. Trek 2009 and it's successor are to those previous movies as Jersey Shore is to a Ken Burns documentary. Flashy, disposable, ultimately worthless but they fill the hours, do the numbers, and everybody gets paid. Plot ? Character motivations ? Go read a book. Science ? That's for the Discovery Channel ...
-
I'm going with the Harry Mudd bet.
It's difficult to predict what Bad Robot will do because Abrams prodco is a crapprodco. They always make bad decisions.
To think like them requires counter-smart methods. Think like the idiocy; become one with the idiocy.
-

-
I am tired of the Internet Age of Non-Spoilers. So-and-so is THIS, and then the filmmakers go and make up a cover identity to avoid that spoiler. Wasn't there a time when filmmakers were honest about who was playing what in remakes/adaptations?
-
...or you'd realize that since the Eugenics War predates even the formation of Starfleet, Khan and his fellow supermen and women can still be out there waiting to be found. Marcus and Finnegan may or may not exist; we don't know the full effect of the alteration of this timeline. If Kirk was born in space and not Iowa, as in the prime timeline, then Carol Marcus or Finnegan could either not exist, not have those names, not have ever encountered Kirk, or a mix of all three. That's the wonder of this "reboot:" they need not replay anything that's gone before in the prime timeline. And even if Khan shows up in this new movie, it won't be a remake of Wrath of Khan, it'll be a remake of Space Seed, as this will be the first encounter with Khan in the alternate timeline, not the second. I'm hoping for something more original, but J.J. & Co. banked more than enough good will with their first picture for me to trust that they won't screw the pooch on their second go-round.

It's just a shame that the older she gets, the more she looks like her dad.

Point blank, In the Abrams movie, Kirk enters Starfleet Academy almost five years later than TOS, and is appointed Captain of the Enterprise five years earlier than TOS. Mitchell, Finnegan, Marcus...should all be gone before Kirk even sets foot in the Academy. He never sets foot on the Republic or the Farragut, so no friends, acquaintances, or experiences from those years are applicable in the new universe, either. Even if the Enterprise received the same exact missions as TOS (unlikely as one of the most important planets in the galaxy has just been destroyed), they would all be happening years earlier. So, sure, they're on whatever mission took them to point X,Y,Z where the Botany Bay was found in TOS, but this time there's no ship to be stumbled across, BECAUSE IT'S FIVE YEARS EARLIER! I'm not saying that Kirk should never fight a Gorn, or that it's impossible for Uhura to ever see a tribble, because Gorn and tribbles are not rare, unique creatures in the galaxy. Kahn is. In a series that already has us working with a serious suspension of disbelief, asking us to throw logic out the window is a bit much. Kirk never watched Kodos slaughter four thousand people, something that definitively made him who he was in TOS, and we can accept that because it's a new timeline and we "believe" in Kirk, but showing us how different things are, then asking us to believe that a one in a billion chance encounter is duplicated at a different time in a different location is bit much. And please, don't treat me like an idiot. I never said anything about Abrams doing WoK. And this isn't a reboot, it's a linear continuation through an alternate timeline. If it _was_ a true reboot, then this conversation wouldn't be happening.

Remember that? Where the hostage eventually winds up on the side of the hostage taker? All of the supportive "guessing game" that has been going on about this seems so "delighted to get crumbs" to me that it's getting annoying. I'm not a hater/fanboy of JJs Trek but as others have said on this thread, why go through the trouble of creating a slightly clever way of using the same characters and timeframe but having completely new stories under an entirely new "alternate timeline" if they're just going to give us the same exact remakes in the movies. Is some variation of "The Search for Spock" next? Or will they be bold and change it to "The Search for Bones"? And it's Spock that pulls his Bone's id into his own brain? And Spock runs around exclaiming he's "a Doctor, not a Vulcan alien Dammit!" (get the wordplay? vulcan - fuckin?) I want this to work either way...but I find either our own "anticipated guessing" or the productions acceptance that this teasing of what will ultimately be something we've already seen is somehow mysterious or fun to figure out. It's not. It's being happily thankful for crumbs from yesterday's leftovers. I'd be happy to be wrong here...
-
That's " Marla McGivers ".
-
She could pass for a younger Carol Marcus. Remember Kirk's younger now so Carol Marcus could be also. And the timelines different so she and Kirk could be having their fling and the whole Khan thing could be happening all at once ( Different timeline ). Then again it could all be bull and a distraction from the truth.
-
....so get Samantha in the movie pronto!

I'm cool with cameos of canon characters - in fact, I think it's really fun. I'm actually really excited about the next Trek film. ...But if this is just going to rehash Khan and all the characters associated with that film, then this is just a "paint-by-numbers" cash-in, so fuck this. I won't support it. I'm waiting with bated breath. Please, please, please, be good. Please.
