You Want An Olly Moss Poster For THE DARK KNIGHT RISES From Mondo...? You've Got It!!
The Kidd here...
If you've tried to land a Mondo poster in the past, you know it's no easy task. if you didn't manage to get into the site in the .082 seconds the print you wanted was available, you were shit out of luck. And, even if you didn't manage to get one in your cart, unless you type 462 words per minute, there's no guarantee you were able to take one of those limited pieces of art work home with you.
Well, that's about to change, as coming up this week, for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, Mondo is offering up a timed print done by Olly Moss that'll be available to anyone who wants one for 24 hours.

Moss made the announcement on his Tumblr, stating that if you log onto Mondo as of 12:01 a.m. CST on Wednesday, July 18, and place an order for one of these 16x24 screen prints, it's yours.
The prints will run you 40 bucks, which is about standard for a Mondo print, and...
FINALLY!!! I might be able to score myself one of these bad boys... and this one certainly does look sweet.
Hopefully, moving ahead, this will become the standard for Mondo poster sales, as it'll cut down on the frustration and increase their sales. Sure, it'll get rid of the exclusive nature of some of their prints, but screw it. The more people that can put up some cool poster art, the merrier.

The font doesn't work with the rest of the poster. Still, it's miles better than the last couple Mondo posters this site has posted.

I'm bitching about posters, for the love of Christ. All 3 of the last articles and posters suck balls. I'll shut up now. (opens Oeuvre).

Who needs a Hobbit Panel Report? Here's another fuckin Mondo batman poster

Ain't It Disappointing?
-
...the movie it's "promoting". This is my biggest gripe with Mondo in general. It's more about a designer masturbating him/herself than making a poster FOR the movie. Still , this is lightyears ahead of that previous schlock, so points for that.

There's no denying his workrate surpasses everyone else on the site put together. Put him in there on those panels, send his ass to New Zealand and you know he'd coverage up and posted within minutes

@redjester: Respectfully disagree on the typeface. I think it works beautifully. But, not really a fan of the poster overall.

Just makes him look like goddamn Robocop.
-
But this poster not only has nothing to do with TDKR (or any Nolan Batman film), its also just not good. The batsymbol on the face? Talk about a failed attempt at creativity. Anyone who is falling over themselves to pay money for this is nuts if you ask me. I wouldn't take one of those if they gave them out for free at the theater.

Not a huge fan of this poster, but a timed exclusive is way better than a numbered exclusive...
by Jay
Mondo isn't making money from the Ebay flippers. So offering up a couple hundred more prints to sell isn't going to keep it from selling out. I rarely buy posters & art, but there are few Mondo posters I thought were really nice. Like the Exorcist for example (I ain't spending 90 bucks on it though) Unfortunately, I work during the day. I do not have a constant twitter feed giving me pointless info 99% of the time. Nor am I checking availability every day. Even if I was, I know the odds of me being quick enough to buy it are slim to non. But this format makes so much more sense. I know the day it will be available, and all I need to do is set aside 5 minutes if I want one. Easy. If Mondo adopts this for future posters, than I may just end up buying one or two.

Better than the last two but the symbol for the eyes in the cowl makes it look silly - Schumacher-esque, even
by David_Denmans_Beard

But there's something cool about the poster's atmosphere I find intriguing. Maybe in a year when WB prematurely reboots Batman this will have more significance?

More absolute shit from absolute shit "artists."
by Trying_It_Again_Part_2
Christ, I hope they didn't get paid for any of this garbage. You'd think that the most anticipated film of the summer would have high-caliber artistry from poster makers. Blegh.
-
That is a fucking weak slice of poster right there. Looks like its trying to pay homage to Tim Burton, Nolan, the Dark Night books and every other take on Batman - except for Adam West - all at once.
-
That's kind of cool. It could be like a heads up display/night vision/thermal,etc inside the cowl.
-
I expect it to be awesome, but it could fail to deliver.
-
Good Idea! Do more like this!
-
Art is subjective. To me, this is an awesome art-deco style poster. The use of space and negative space is what makes this poster shine and me drool to give them $40 next week. I don't throw the word art around lightly, but in this case - this is a combination of art and design. And it's fucking excellent. So crawl back in your hole, Citizen.
-
So all you haters go home.
-
How does the above image tie in to the DKR beyond the fact that there's a picture of Batman? Not only does it not look like Nolan's Batman, there's NOTHING tying it to the movie. It's the problem with 90% of the crap Mondo puts out. They don't even try to do a poster FOR the film -- something that matched the tone or content of the movie. They do a poster so some graphic design blow-hard can masturbate himself for $$$.
-
"Awesome" became "trite". No 40 bucks from me.
-

Crap. If it had nothing to do with the movie and was just the picture, fine, would work as Batman art. But doesn't work as a movie poster

I think this poster suggests a good idea for a future Batman film.
by notcher
If they're going to reboot Batman, and sure enough they will, I'd say go back to the early 1900's and set the film there. That would be a take I'd like to see, and the detective Batman would be more of a possibility.
-
July 14, 2012, 11:51 p.m. CST
In fact, set the Batman reboot during the Great Depression.
by notcher
I'd fucking see that!
-
the cap is bright even tough it's black, non-Baley, archetypal a cross between an Ansel Adams b&w pic and a 1920's Broadway poster, or not fuck you :-)

I really do like the style, but the bat logo doesn't really say anything. What about that poster suggests rising?
by AlienFanatic
I mean I really respect the quality of the art, but I'd expect a poster to say something about the film itself. This one is more about drawing attention to the creativity of the artist in using the batman logo. So once your eyes are drawn to it, you expect it to say something and it doesn't. I'd LOVE to see the same, exact style AND logo use but have it in a foreshortened view as if looking up at him. The foreshortening would have suggested rising, and the bat would have been seen to have been ascending. Missed opportunity, but again nice art.

That's the problem - there should be more characters. And there should be more scenery. And there should be more stupid people.
by Rufus
Look, when you get a poster, it has to be a poster, ideally, that you can walk around to go take a crap at night, and during the day, and not get sick of it. I'd rather have a poster of JUST BATMAN that has a slick meta-themed bat on his face (that actually sorta makes sense with the lighting) than have a pic of Bale as batman, bane, alfred, catwoman or whatever. If you want that, either ask Drew Struzan to make you a Dark Knight Returns poster, or get the theatrical. This is not the same thing, nor was it ever intended to replace it. I still think this poster's great. Can't satisfy everyone. This poster underlines Batman the way he is, a shiny dark knight. Sure, it doesn't pay tribute to Adam West's batman (nor should it, though someone complained) but the style is reminiscent of what has always drawn batman and is visually reminiscent of the Dark Knight, which was the most successful rendition of the comics in popular culture. You guys hate just because you don't understand it. Brutal.
-
Is a great 'graphic' designer/artist' I think some of you are missing the point a tad with the Batman symbol across the eyes. Moss plays with the conventions of an image. He plays with shapes and symbols and tries to fit them together in interesting places (see his Robocop piece or his Dirty Harry poster). It is not supposed to be a practical design! It's JUST an image. Check out his other work (he recently designed a Spider-man with a bra for eyes, some of you WILL really get angry about that...'Spider-man! Boobs for eyes? Not on my watch!')

Just screened TDK properly for the first time. It's okay... I don't see why people get so worked up about it.
by Autodidact
This is probably the fifth time I attempted to screen TDK and finally I was able to watch the movie all the way through without falling asleep or just sort of tuning out in the "4th act". I honestly prefer Batman Begins.

I don't think Ledger's Joker was accurate to any portraya of Joker
by Autodidact
Maybe it's a good thing to create an all-new interpretation. But I stand by my original judgement that Nicholson's is the truer Joker performance.
-
...is that his silhouette is instantly recognizable without having to put the fucking bat symbol in the middle of his face. There's a reason why the bat symbol worked on the Bane poster and why it's just mindless copycat bullshit here.

Yeah, that isn't very good. Do a Bane poster instead.
by Knuckleduster
And put in some fucking effort, guys.

You're talking about why it's a nice piece of design. I'm not arguing that. I'm talking about why it makes for a crappy poster for the movie it's supposedly connected with. Why slap Dark Knight Rises on there when it's clearly unrelated? Oh that's right, instant $$$. There's a shit-ton of amazing Batman art out there. That doesn't mean that you can throw "The Dark Knight Rises" on it and it makes for a good poster for the movie. I agree, decent art... what the hell does it have to do with DKR?
-
...on the contrary, it's about recognizing the obvious disconnect between poster and movie (one that's pretty common in these Mondo posters).
-
He released three posters at Comic Con, and that was my favorite.

Looks like fan art, though so does a lot of Mondo's stuff, people here seem to eat it up though.

I'm usually a sucker for movie posters and balk at hating almost 100% of the time on anything initially (always put the "i could be wrong" caveat) but the bat symbol for the eyes is dumb. bag of hair dumb. edible tires dumb. self-decapitation kit dumb.
