Comic-Con: Quint has a description of that surprise Gareth Edwards Godzilla preview piece!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a quick update from the epic, 2 ½ hour long Warner Bros panel. They announced Man of Steel, The Hobbit and Pacific Rim, but what they didn’t announce was what is essentially a proof of concept trailer for Gareth Edwards’ GODZILLA.
They didn’t even announce what it was before running the footage… we just got the Legendary logo against a plume of black smoke… the camera floats over a devastated city… It’s not big Roland Emmerich devastation, more like Neill Blomkamp heavy reality devastation. Buildings are tumbled, fires have broken out, busses squashed and a skyscraper with a huge hole in the middle of it.
The camera keeps moving and then we see something not very real world at all… A huge creature… segmented shell, multiple arms ending in claw and dead, dead, dead. Flies buzz around it and from a long way away we hear Godzilla’s iconic roar.
Cut to the title, which is exactly the font of that teaser poster.
But then the big hero shot: huge hazy plume of smoke and dust as something moves inside… we see a clawed hand, camera tilts up as the big creature turns, his back scales causing shafts of godlight to filter through the haze (and these back scales are not spruced up… jagged, sharp… totally Godzilla) as the head turns in profile, letting out a roar.
Someone on Twitter (it might have been Erik Davis, but don’t quote me on that) mentioned that the tone of the footage was like post 9-11 news footage and that’s dead on. This is real, sad devastation combined with the awe of Godzilla.
I gotta say, this was the first footage of the con that birthed goosebumps for me. Great, great stuff. If they can match the tone of this footage for a whole movie then this could be incredible. Truly.
Now I gotta run. Marvel’s big Iron Man 3 panel is about to start! Be back with that report in a bit! Oh, and they showed 12 ½ minutes of The Hobbit… and a sizzle reel for Pacific Rim that really proves the world is about to be taken over by Kaiju and fucking huge robots.
Make sure to follow my twitter account for a live-tweeting of the big Marvel panel and stay tuned for detailed write ups of the rest of the coolness I saw today.

Roland Emmerich's first cousin?
-
..was made by someone from Variety -- but don't quote me on that either!
-
Sounds EXCELLENT.
-
Would've liked to have been there for that. Hopefully will be online soon!
-
AICN staff is on fire this weekend with mixing up names and places (Jodie Foster being South American instead of South African in Elysium). Can't blame poor Quint who is in the middle of a shitstorm of activity.
-
Quint...seriously? I'm waiting for your Man of Steel writeup. Angry that you would do Godzilla first. Get on it, Eric!
-
But I ain't and that ain't cool. WB really is bringing it to the table now. They have too. No Harry Potter to save them anymore.

Everyone was hyped for the Pacific Rim/Man of Steel teasers, then Godzilla just blew everyone out of the water! Nothing can compete with THAT roar for pure goosebump excitement!!
by cameron
All we need now is a official trailer, but i think it'll be a way off as this looks like a tailored teaser purely for publicity to announce the return of Godzilla, i don't think it's actual footage as the movie is slated for 2014 and shooting hasn't officially started, but if this teaser sets the tone for what we're going to see....wow...just....wow Finally we might get the Godzilla movie we're all waiting for.

Hopefully if Pacific Rim and Godzilla both kill it, we'll see American Gamera as well :)
-
They should attach the teaser to Dark Knight Rises. God, i cant wait for Godzilla. Sooo fucking excited.

wooo! Thanks much Quint! I was hoping it was at least a shot of his eye or something but this is more than I had even hoped for!
by wcolbert
I just really...REALLY would have liked to see it for myself. So the view of Godzilla is just in sillhouette then? .I had expected as much...but I'm curious as to how the shape and movement are in comparison to the TOHO movies? obviously this isn't man in suit stuff, so it, I expect, looks a lot more real...but I'm wondering if he stands and is shaped like...well...Godzilla! GAHHHH I WANNA SEEEEE!!!

I'm not complaining already or anything, but don't those spines look a little nubby?
by wcolbert
Someone posted an image (albeit a blurry one) that someone took of the creature's back...and we see the spines, which are jagged (a good sign) - maybe it's the angle, but I was hoping they'd be much larger than that, like the millenium Godzilla designs. Oh well...Gareth Edwards can make the most perfect movie and can't possibly please everyone - I'm just hoping it continues to look as good as it is sounding thus far! Let's hope we get official casting listings soon...hopefully unknowns or lesser knowns, and hopefully some asian actors (I hope it's not all in NYC this time...come on...) Andy Lau comes to mind if Godzilla invades China at all. Ken Watanabe for Japan (ok, they're not unknowns, but lesser known in the west than, say, Tom Cruise). Oh oh god, please, Gong Li...sorry I just have a huge celeb crush on her :P

I welcome this shit and the teaser sounds BADASS!

Is it wrong that I always wished Godzilla were real just because a 350 foot tall monster stomping around the planet would make life a lot more interesting?
by wcolbert
I mean...population has to be controlled somehow anyway, right? If disease doesn't do it, something else will. Asteroids, supervolcanos....giant monsters.... :P I always wondered how I would react if I saw that silhouette against the background of my burning city, a few miles away. I'd get the hell out of dodge, sure, but I think I might just observe for a while. From a safe distance.
-
...the segmented creature? Almost definitely one of the "parasites" that hung around Godzilla in the original (trilobites) and in the '85 revival (giant sea lice).
-
I dont recall that...I only remember them being in the 1985 film... hmm...o.O
-
but you know what I mean
-
In the original, on Odo Island after Godzilla has attacked, they find living trilobites. Not stated, but insinuated that they clung to Godzilla like lice. Despite being extinct for several million years. In the revival of '85 (or '84), there were giant "sea lice" on the ship that encountered Godzilla. One was found in the sleeping quarters of the crew, again, not said, but insinuating that it'd been living off Godzilla. Not sure it made it into the American cut of the film; saw the original Japanese version, and it was pretty silly (the sea louse flew through the air like a hovercraft).

Oh I definitely rememberthe 85 sea lice-scared me as a kid
by wcolbert
I'll have to go back and watch the 54 film again - guess I just forgot. That would be a really cool bit of continuity if it is a trilobite/sea lice type parasite that's been living off of Godzilla...since it would seem to suggest that THIS Godzilla, like the original, is not some mutated lizard but a massive dinosaur like creature that was awakened by atomic testing and surfaced, bringing with it "extinct" parasites. I really like that. On the other hand, I really hope it's not a giant monster that he fights - I hope he's the ONLY giant monster in this initial film...because he was the only one in the original, and it was never about him VS other monsters to begin with. THAT came later. The focus of this one needs to be entirely on Godzilla, where he comes from, what he wants, and of course the human cast trying to come to terms with a walking force of nature that the military simply cannot stop.

Loved Cloverfield...but cannot fucking wait to see this!
by BacardiRocky
The 9/11like tone was great in Cloverfield. Can't wait to see this. Always loved how Cloverfield was a Godzilla movie as seen from the ground. Would have been cooler if it starred Japanese citizens running instead of American New York City hipsters...Can't WAIT for Godzilla to return to the big screen.

It's clear that 9/11 changed this generation of moviegoers forever
by wcolbert
We had never seen real devistation..we'd never seen the likes of real ruins the way the WWII generation did...so we accepted the depiction of the destruction of buildings in movies as accurate - but after that, everything changed. The image of those buildings falling is forever seared into our minds...and so when someone is going for a movie with a dark, realistic tone, we pick up on it when it doesnt look quite right. The atmosphere of 9/11 was unlike any depiction of destruction I ever saw in a movie - the clean cut holes through buildings in the 98 Godzilla now stand in stark contrast to the reality of it- the panic, the sirens, the smoke and dust everywhere, the deathly silence of the city in the wake of it. I hope (and it seems that) Garreth Edwards understands that and isn't afraid to show us the way we know it really is when our world comes crumbling down around us. I want to see people, covered in dust and debris, staggering through the white dust and smoke, hardly recognizeable as humans, more like ghosts...blank, shocked expressions on their faces...aimless...lost...confused. I want to hear crying in the background, the odd scream of anguish or pain. Real jarring stuff - the way it REALLY would be. That means no Matthew Broderick feeding it fish sticks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Oixv1UbOPg&feature=plcp godzilla419 on youtube found this still image from the teaser - I'm hoping his neck isn't really that thick and that's just smoke

Give it less than a week.

nah, it's just a proof of concept teaser- doubt it'll be in front of any movies
by wcolbert
But I would love it if it were! Anyway, the movie hasn't even officially started shooting and I'm not aware of anyone even being cast yet - so I'm not sure they want to show us anything just yet. Unfortunately, it looks like a 2014 release...which means we might not even see a real trailer until next summer. :( Unless, that is, Edwards and Legendary are being sneaky little bastards and have been filming in secret!

Based on what you can see from the teaser, I don't care much for the look of this new Godzilla. It looks a bit too similar to the design used in the so-called "Godzilla Always" clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_uCcaaIavc They really need to go back to the facial features of the G'64 and incorporate the exotic looking spines from the first two Godzilla movies (G'54 & G'55 Raids Again). Of the last couple decades, the look in "Godzilla Mothra King Ghidorah (GMK) All Monsters Attack" probably was the best try at a retro-looking Godzilla but the horrible Barney-looking torso, legs and blocky feet ruined that design. And stay away from the purple super spikey look of the 4 Godzilla Millenium flicks.
-
That's when they went all kiddy and had him dancing around and shit. Worst costume era ever. Seriously, even as a lifelong huge godzilla fan...the costumes of the 60's and early 70's were utter shit (some of them they actually re-used for 2 or 3 movies even though they were falling apart because they had no money). The thing had bulging frog eyes and didnt look remotely threatening. Now if you mean the 54 Godzilla - the first one - from what we can see, this is actually VERY similar - even the spines are similar in size and shape to the 54 original. The spines in the 54 godzilla were pretty minimalist - they weren't the massive spikey things that you see in the 90's and 2000's Godzillas.

What they didn't tell you, was that it was so awesome, they ran it twice.
by Bartleby T. Scrivener
Trust me, I was there. And you know it's special when you got kaiju fans busting nuts all over the place. And then to end the film with that red kanji script with the words GOZILLA. I cheered for that my friends. By the way, Pacific Rim is going to be fucking awesome. Del Toro promised 9 monsters! Man of Steel had fanboys crying again. And Hobbit was fantastic.
-
Something the Iguana-style GINO could not do, which sucked balls and disappointed pretty much everyone. Therefore, Godzilla NEEDS to have TOTAL FUCKING DESTRUCTION (Sorry, it was appropriate!) with Nuke Breath intact and being used to completely fuck up the corrupt military industrial complex, otherwise, it's just NOT Godzilla, FACT! <p> Oh and keep Michael Bay FAR AWAY from this franchise!!!
-
LOVE Godzilla and am madhouse psyched for this. Even from that brief description - the tone sounds exactly what I really believe the old skewlers wanted to see. Basically, a cold and brutal remake of Gojira. Wonder if they'll use that iconic theme? Always hear it in my head every time I see the big green guy...been a massive favorite since early childhood...cannot wait!

wcolbert - had a dream of exactly that..Godzilla was REAL
by Darth Macchio
I swear on this..vivid as I can recall... It was when I was a kid and living in a particular neighborhood...we were outside where it's sunset and just getting dark..hearing the roaring from miles off and the sound of muffled explosions, light of massive raging fires lighting up the clouds more as it gets darker... ..and then looking up over my own house, and miles away, seeing a towering Godzilla fucking everything up..he was too far away to notice us (me and friends on the street) but it was like we all knew we were fucked. (and it was AWESOME!) I was immediately utterly excited/terrified in equal measure and I think woke up immediately..or at least, that's all i remember from the dream. First I'm hearing about this outside of knowing it was in development and I'm there...just there in the theater, opening night. No questions.

Can we please have a Godzilla whose spring loaded fist fires from her forearm
by illegal alien vs sexual predator
Only to lose her fist and then impulsively pay $50 on eBay 30 years later to replace it. That would be sick!

They MUST use classic Godzilla villain monsters. You don't make up bullshit bad guys when doing Batman, or X-men etc. HE MUST BREATH RADIATION FIRE AND FIGHT HIS CLASSIC ENEMIES!!!
