HERCULES ON THE RADIO!!
It’s Comic Con Weekend and Ain’t It Cool’s TV Critic Tonight Chats Up THOR/X-MEN Screenwriter Zack Stentz!! Listen And Call In LIVE Saturday 8pm PT/11pm ET!!
It’s Comic Con weekend, and our scheduled guest on “Ask Mr. KERN” this week is my old friend writer-producer Zack Stentz, whose resume includes “Fringe,” “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” and two of last summer’s three big Marvel blockbusters: “Thor” and “X-Men: First Class.”
Stentz’ first novel “Colin Fischer,” the tale of an Asperger’s-afflicted teen detective, hits shelves Nov. 8.
Regular panelists “Movie Mike” Armendariz and Stefani Dias are at Comic Con tonight, so we might be getting a live report from San Diego.
Maybe we’ll talk about some of my favorite current comics, including “Hit Girl,” “Super Crooks,” “Secret Service,” “Angel & Faith,” “Buffy Season Nine,” “Earth 2,” “The Shade,” “Action Comics,” “Batman Incorporated,” “Next Men” and even some of the “Before Watchmen” titles.
Comic Con just screened a host of fall pilots I’ve seen, among them “Arrow,” “Cult,” “The Following,” “Revolution,” and “666 Park Avenue.” So those could come up.
I’ve recently seen Woody Allen’s “To Rome With Love” and Lynn Shelton’s “Your Sister’s Sister.” SO those could come up too.
And it’s not impossible we’ll talk a bit about my toy poodle and her strained relationship with my poodle-mama.
Candidly, we can’t cram half of this into a two-hour show, but we’re going to give it the old college try.
The radio show airs Saturday 8:05 p.m. to 10 p.m. Pacific Time.
No matter where you are you can listen to the show LIVE by hitting the “Listen Live” button at kernradio.com.
Best of all, you, constant reader, can join this very nerdy conversation.
The toll-free call-in line is:
1-800-640-5376
Call in drunk, as I always do, but watch your language. This is not a podcast. This monster goes out over the air on all 50,000 watts of Southern California’s KERN-AM.
Have something better to do tonight? Want to listen to older shows? Head over to the “Ask Mr. KERN” archives!

It is thrilling to see that somebody knows the difference between...
by MovieManStill
"Yay" ("Hooray"), "Yeah" (informal "yes") and "Ya" (some Swedish Muppet thing?).
-
We are... hopeful that Movie Mike and Stefani will be able to check in. No promises. But if you want to know what they're up to, they're Tweeting like crazy from SDCC. Pick up their Twitter accounts from my web site... askmrkern.com. We are keeping our fingers crossed for a check in, but they were in line for something before 5AM this morning. Gonna be a long day for them both.
-
Like that? Ya. Is good. Ya.
-
Yipee ki yay mo........

Tongiht, Tongiht, it all began Tongiht, I saw you and the world went away ...

the tech is there. private companies are already streaming every panel should be streamed and they could sell passes the same way they do in person

Yeah, their "yay" indicates that they're not going to confused with...
by MovieManStill
...the Swedes over there, whose "ya" is actually "ja," ya know what I mean? Who's not smart enough to understand that, yes? It's definItely supposeD to be easily comprehended. I am altogether pleased to be discussing this with you all together. However, I expect no compliments, as my chatter is not a complement to the point of the Talkback. REgradless, I could NOT care less, as I cannot convince you that you should be persuaded to speak well, with good grammatical skills. It will be much farther into the future, before we are further along with our speaking and writing skills. I realize that I founder, as I flounder with my weak discussion techniques. I now lie in my bed, and as I lay my head on the pillow, the lightning outside my window flashes, lightening my gloomy room. No one understands. It's impossible to know its calming effect on me, affecting my ability to concentrate. Besides, I don't expect any of you to stand beside me in my quest. Anyway, if there is any way that I am able to listen this evening, I will. (Hell, I just want to take some of the f-ing Carpet Cave shots, who TF am I kidding.)

Barely had any time for the internet or anything else. Got the weekend off but my Mom and Sister kidnapped me for birthday shenanigans. So here I am using her computer. I'm about maybe two thirds through my list of movies from the last ten years. Sorry guys, I've been trying to finish it. But anyway, on with the show!! How many hours is it again? Five or four?
-
He must be very tired. Shhhh. everybody be quiet. he needs his sleep. i should probably be sleeping it's 9:56pm, but my sisters guest bed doesn't promote sleeping. sad but true...

by walt
i was technically a vet. 87-03. watched the con grow when i used to go, one could actually spend time chatting with creators the con was all about being able to feel normal for one weekend....no one looking at you as being a freak who still collected comics now they want those same fuckers who treated us as freaks to fill up the con i miss the old con
-
everyone is booked
-
The footage we saw was from the first half of the film... Hill's stuff was filmed last week and not a part of it.
-
Carpet Cave is coming very soon !!!
-
I know the feeling; this is my twentieth year in attendance, and at times I miss the way the old con felt, yet I love days like today because I'm also such a fan of film.
-
Especially Thor.

Did everyone make a *big deal* about it being a space western?
by gotilk
I don't recall that, really. I remember it being mentioned. But I don't remember anyone making a big deal about it. I do remember the great FX (which really were great for TV) and the great writing/dialogue, great characters and fantastic sets.
-
July 14, 2012, 10:50 p.m. CST

my question is why everyone made such a big deal about firefly being a western in space
by walt
never mind that all tv shows are either westerns or cop shows...just in dif forms
-
Yeah, I watched that video last week, and left a comment.... but it looks like it was deleted or didn't show up. All it said was how the puppy was cute or something. Hmmm...
-
... and all my kids have come home for the holidays! You make me so happy... ***sniff***
-
Well, it is bit of a *why do you kick puppies* kind of question. The point is, people DIDN'T make a big deal about it being a western in space. And I even went to a few Browncoat get-togethers. Never heard it brought up. I mean.... there were more Steampunk types there than anyone really focusing on the space-western aspect. In other words.... no-one did make a big deal about it. I think it may have been mentioned here and there. But even on the show, you could see it here and there, in sets, dialogue. But then again, there was a lot of Chinese in the show as well. It was a mixed bag of influences and a kind of mash-up of genres. Heck, I even recall when people were calling Star Wars a kind of space-western. Inaccurately, of course. But they did it anyway.
-
Whose our daddy??
-
Yes it does, good sir. Yes.It.Does.
-
you havent lived until you have experienced the...errr....smells they need to hand out deodorant at the door and force everyone to use it greatest news from this con...NO MORE TWILIGHTERS....EVER worst news...TWILIGHTERS TO BE REPLACED BY EVEN MORE REPULSIVE, 50 SHADES OF GRAYERS
-
In my above post, I added "with the dog" to avoid confusion as to who was Herc's woman. Just in case... lol.
-
It is essential. They must do it live there next year.
-
LOL!!!
-
Never used it. Never been on it. Not even sure what it is...
-
But remember the first rule of USENET. You do NOT talk about how cool USENET is. I'll have to tell you in private sometime, L.H. You will be.... surprised. Let's just say..... the MPAA and the RIAA are still looking in.... kind of the wrong place. LOL!!
-
Yeah, we love that YA fiction. We're practically Mormon vampires here. lol
-
I wish I could do a remote from there. We'll see were we are come this time next year.
-
If you don't keep 'em busy, they'll chew everything you own.
-
July 14, 2012, 11:15 p.m. CST
never heard the steampunk take on firefly...and i dont really see it
by walt
i was hearing western in space from day 1
-
Sounds like a plan. I'll tell you what... if you find a way to do a remote... I'll show up to cheer you on. (and buy you a beer)
-
Fascinating. Well, just from my experience meeting up with the Browncoats, I would describe at least 75% of the people there as *Steampunk* types. specially the people who showed up at the premiere of Serenity. That was a blast!! We got Capt Mal at our screening. Mr Nathan Fillion himself.
-
This beer on an empty stomach is making it hard to follow the obvious. I guess I need stuff to be more obscure. Or maybe I should eat something...
-
I'll hold you to that. :)

He was also in one of the best two-parters of Little House ever.
by Shermdawg
-
You and I both... Actually, The Amazing Race is probably the ONLY reality-reality-competition show I've ever enjoyed. Although I do watch America's Got Talent ONLY because Stern is on it.
-
BZZZZZT!!
-
I hope DirecTV gets them to offer their channels as a package when this is finally worked out. I don't watch a single channel that was pulled other than Comedy Central for South Park, if I had the option of not paying for them, I sure as hell wouldn't.
-
ONE of the best 2-parters? Dude... THE best 2-parter. And you call yourself a talkbacker. LOL!!! sorry... couldn't resist.
-
But I'd miss AMC immediately.
-
July 14, 2012, 11:33 p.m. CST
You can get the NFL package, Netflix, and Hulu Plus on the ps3 cheaper than a DirecTV subscription with Sunday Ticket from what I was told.
by Shermdawg
-
right now... 1. Breaking Bad 2. Game of Thrones 3. Doctor Who 4. Bunheads (sorry, it's hilarious and I'm hooked) 5. The Newsroom lots of runners-up.
-
Bunheads and the Newsroom have me watching. And I've missed GOT so I bought the Season 1 Blu-Ray. Seen two EPs so far.
-
THE BEST way to watch Game Of Thrones. Good choice.
-
My opinion is the same... they should have spent more time in the WW2 era... Hell, I wish they would jump back and give us more Cap-Bucky adventures.
-
And not always in the ways you would assume at first. The idealism makes me think of a kind of fairy tale sometimes. A fantasy. But hey... it's a good fantasy. Don't you wish that we had a news program hosted by an old-school conservative, driven by a team focused on getting to the facts and moving on when it shifts to sensationalism? Sure we would.... ...again... fantasy.
-
wait.....does Sony own the movie rights to Spider-ham or does Marvel!?
-
Come on!
-
and im almost 100 percent certain that lee didnt write a single script for the marvel cap series it is time to end the myth of stan lee as this god of comic book writers
-
Give it the love it deserves.
-
I feel like .... so stupid now. lol Seriously, the best comedy on TV. Yeah... that dialogue at the end of Louie was SO funny. Adult men meeting new close friends.... it's just awkward. So difficult.
-
What if instead of saying I'd buy you a beer next year and the Con, I instead suggested we go back to my room and *hang out or something*. ROFL!!! Yeah.... no.
-
July 14, 2012, 11:59 p.m. CST
I seem to remember a time long ago, when TV news was about what was happening in the world. Plain and simple.
by L.H.Puttgrass
I guess I was just too young and naive. Today everything seems to be either conservative or liberal. *sigh*
-
Ha! Well, maybe not always. But sometimes.
-
People will be talking about that one, and the one before it, for years.
-
I don't need a baseball bat.
-
Had a great time this week. So glad I didn't miss it like last week. *whew* Push for that third hour, people!! MUST HAVE THIRD HOUR!!
-
Yeah, I can see that. It's a fair criticism.
-
Thanks!!! See you next week!!!
-
my fav comic as a kid. the original lineup could work as a live action...but would be too expensive to produce the current lineup only works as animated...and if it is supposed to be a tent pole, marvel and disney better not do what disney did with john carter

Whoooo! Whoooooooooooo!!!! Cha-chunk! Cha-chunk! Whoooooo!!!
by L.H.Puttgrass
I think I hear a train coming.
-
Yeah, I remember news being that way too. And on The Newsroom they seem to be trying to bring that back in their fictional newsroom.... but so far... failing most of the time. But they seem to have that as a goal. Telling the news, as it is, and then moving on instead of bleeding every sensational story dry. Example: The oil pipeline break... they chose to put it at the bottom of the show. But didn't they fail at that on some level, on the show? I'd have to watch again. I may have been distracted.
-
The show just comes across as preachy......
-
and yeah it's a fair criticism.
-
My favorite comic too!! And yes, original lineup. I don't think I've ever seen a Guardians comic after the original line-up.
-
Yep, it is. It's the stop Obama express. Choo-choo!! Next stop... OhCrapRomneyIsTheAlternativeVille. Yikes.
-
And for putting up with my gruff but lovable poodle.
-
July 15, 2012, 12:18 a.m. CST
gotilk marvel has done to the guardians what it did to the xmen
by walt
made it so convoluted that it lost what made it special in the first place not being a part of the current marvel universe, gave the writers on the original series a lot of leeway i think tweens, teens and even adults, could really get into that world...with some tweaks but i dont know what is popular anymore, and they aint gonna start making movies for me
-
July 15, 2012, 12:25 a.m. CST
thx herc, and you gotta watch the entire firefly panel on youtube
by walt
its actually touching the funniest, as in lol panel has gotta be the psych panel the funniest, as in absurd panel, has gotta be the resident evil one...it is amazing what a woman in love will do for her hack hubby
-
For the show, for the years here and for one of the best weekly talkbacks of all time. This is a blast, every week.
-
That's too bad that Marvel screwed up Guardians. I guess I'm glad I never caught the later line-ups.
-
The new perfume that can make any 5 or 6 into an instant 8!! Look for the yellow bottle.

CARPET CAAAAAAVE! http://www.carpetcave.com/ Oh yeah. The *Carpet 101* area of the site is not functioning. Hmm... I was really hoping to brush up on my carpet knowledge.

dont take my word about anything from marvel...i dont like most of it
by walt
but the kids eat it all up
-
They sure seem to, if Avengers is any indication. I grew up a Marvel kid, so I'm probably biased. My first comic was Iron Man.
-
That was a fun show. I'm beat...
-
July 16, 2012, 3:47 p.m. CST
Apparently, only a select few in here, are paying attention.
by MovieManStill
Not sure how that translates, viewership-wise.
-
Now tell me... what are we viewing? I kid. I kid.
-
attention. ROFL
-
I'd like to know how well the show is doing in the ratings. I hope really well. I know the people on the show usually will not talk specific ratings, but I get the feeling the show is doing okay based on the mood of the show, and the way they talk here. I think they need that third hour though, desperately.
-
I still can't find the video stream, so that could be an obstacle.
-
The carpet caaaaaaave.
