From A Lightning Bolt Scar To HORNS!

Nordling here.
Looks like Daniel Radcliffe can't escape the headgear - first his Harry Potter scar, and now Radcliffe will be donning devil horns for Alexandre Aja's adaptation of the Joe Hill novel.
HORNS is about a young man who wakes up one morning with devil horns protruding from his forehead and the ability to influence people to do bad things. He uses his powers to try and figure out who raped and murdered his girlfriend. It'll be a much darker turn for Daniel Radcliffe than we've seen before, even with THE WOMAN IN BLACK, and I'm happy that Radcliffe is sticking with genre filmmaking.
Joe Hill's book is a fantastic read and goes to some pretty dark places; Radcliffe isn't the first actor to come to mind to play Ig, but I think he'll do just fine with the part, and I'll be really curious to see Radcliffe in this kind of role. The way Ig's powers grow through the course of the book gets really scary at parts, and I'm glad to see Alexandre Aja, who isn't known for pulling punches in his horror films, will be the director to bring this to the screen.

Really enjoyed Woman in Black. Glad he's mixing things up.
-
That's something.
-
in virtually every way?
-
Just lost my interest in this, sorry
-
Hopefully Heart-Shaped Box also gets adapted.

THE HORNS

no one will ever take him seriously in anything because he will always be Harry Potter

I don't recall Harry having the ability to make people bad things
by james
I do recall him being incredibly thick and stubbornly noble and heroic. I think the stories were something about finding home, growing up, and saving Britain and therefor the world from a guy who could influence people to bad things. close connections maybe Jubba but I don't see that this is the same plot as HP.
-
Is a fantastic author. I hope this is a great adaptation.

Great book its going to be a difficult adaptation though

I'm actually not that escited that Aja is doing it. Not that biggest fan.

I like Joe Hill. 20th Century Ghosts was awesome and so is Locke and Key.

He needs the work.

Daniel Radcliff was almost TOO good to be in the Woman In Black
by sonnyfern
Don't get me wrong, it's a cool little flick...but goddamn the dude can ACT.
-
But what is with these British actors stealing our roles?! Are there no good American young actors out there???

Thats Weird... I had the same thing happen to me, horns and all.

Horns is by far my favorite of Jo Hill's work currently. Loved Heart Shaped Box and Locke & Key.. but Horns... hot damn. This is far better than the original rumored actor to play Ig (Shia LaBeouf). Can't wait!
-
For some reason I always got the feeling Radcliffe could play a character capable of nasty shit, so if the story goes in that direction (I've not read it), I'm certainly interested, though it does kill my 'never gonna happen in a million years anyway' pipedream of him playing Ramsey Snow in Game of Thrones
-
and yea i said it.
-
His face is decidedly British looking... and a little too young to be playing the burnout type character I remember Ig being. But what the hell...

I'm surprised to realise that I actually quite like Radcliffe
by CHRISTIAN_BALE_TRASHED_MY_LIGHTS
Found myself enjoying the Harry Potter movies as they progressed and thought he was really good in WOMEN IN BLACK. I think he's actually becoming quite a good actor and look forward to seeing more work from him.
-
Hopefully that means we won't have to see him ruin anything of some significance ever again.

Daniel Radcliffe can't smile like a regular human being
by buggerbugger
Maybe he could just play robots from this point on?

To not point out that Hill is Stephen King's son. That little bastard sure was funny in Creepshow!

Harry Potter will always be his most famous role, but I think he'll have a good career. I hope he has. He seems like a nice guy.

I like Radcliffe but I don't think he's right for this
by heyoucantlaughatthat
The book was great, but the main character needs to be a spiteful little shit. The premise is that everyone, including his own parents, thinks he killed his girlfriend when he didn't. I can't see anyone hating Radcliffe he just seems too harmless. But IF he can pull this off and maybe even do a badass American accent that would be really cool and a testament to his acting chops.
-
He seems like a nice enough bloke but he really can't act. He had one fixed expression all through The Woman in Black - a kind of nervous, deer-caught-in-the-headlights look, which I guess was effective enough in that role but it seemed more the nervousness of an actor scared of forgetting his lines and not hitting his marks than of the character. He just looks stiff and ill-at-ease in front of the camera to me.
-
I think both have potential and am curious about Lawless and this project. Okay you can pelt me with tomatoes now.
-
Hers the thing - British Kids cannot act to save their fucking life - seriously, I shudder when I see some little British turd trying to stay in character.. American Kids, precocious little shits that they are, are great... But then around 19 years of age, something happens - the Brits get good, and I mean REALLY fucking good - and the Americans go down the same route as most of their forebears - that is - alright, and some put in `quite the performance` every now and again, but British actors in their 20s, 30s, 40s etc. just up the ante when it comes to `the craft`.. Don't get me wrong, there are some awesome American (when I say American I am generally referring to North American) actors/actresses out there, but they're just not consistent enough to be classed as `greats`.. However, the one (in my opinion) exception to the rule is Liam Neeson - who just seems to be phoning in his performance in recent years and picking some cheap roles. However I expect this view will not be agreed upon, and someone will mention "Danny Dyer" and my argument becomes completely null and void - talentless fucking mockney that he is.

And the main character (the one Radcliffe is playing) is such a douche.

OH HELLS YEAH!!! Loved the book! One of the best reads of the last few years!
by MariusXe
Book started kinda weird and it took me a few pages to really get it, but once I was in that story it really didn't let up. Couldn't put it down, I even had to read it while sitting in college. Really cool book. Since I loved everything I've seen from Aja so far, count me the fuck in!
-
I seem to recall hearing/reading that somewhere.
-
RIP.
-
that we never really gave him a chance. sure we seen at least 4 or 5 movies hes been in, but they have been big budget (aka movies made purely for making money and possibly selling toys) when was the last time, shia was in a movie where he could show his acting abilities (that is if he has any) most people hate him because spielberg/lucas wanted to make more money (of indy) and because of TF (but seriously, even if you hate that movie, you cant really blame anything on him) so yea... i rather see shia than radcliffe.
-
That's right Darth Macchio. And he can't spell my name either. :)
-
I must respectfully disagree. Radcliffe fronted 8 mainstream blockbusters but didn't make me want to stab him in the eyeballs with an icepick, which is far better than Shiah managed in Crystal Skull or Tansformers. No disrespect to the guy, since he was gracious enough to get his knob out for us in a Sigur Ros video, but I place my bets on my british compatriot
-
Great book. I hadn't given much thought to who could play Ig, but I can see it for sure. Can't wait...now just get Heart-Shaped Box rolling!
-
I remember one casting director saying the reason so many Brits and Aussies doing so well in Hollywood is that American actors tend have some sense of unwarranted entitlement. The theater scene in Great Britain is probably a great deal more lively than in Los Angeles and gets more serious attention. To do well in theater requires a very strong work ethic. In fact many of the more successful American actors have a lot of experience in the New York and Chicago theater scenes. Mark Ruffallo, Jessican Chastain, and Jim Parson are a noteworthy few who earned their stripes doing that. Los Angeles actually does have a pretty good theater scene, you just have to look for it but industry types have to be dragged kicking and screaming to see any of it. If its not at the Geffen they're not interested. I suppose a larger problems is that so many American actors are just flakes looking for immediate gratification. Hell, I'm in acting class every week with some very good actors but you'd be amazed how little serious initiative there is sometimes. And some of the American actors that actually "make it" don't make the rest of us look that good. The CW is littered with countless pretty faces with no skill or talent and very few of them progress beyond that point despite the opportunities their current situation puts them in.
-
And I like Radcliffe. Don't really think he's right for the part, but I'm less annoyed than I was when it was Shia. I have no suggestions for Lee, but that needs to be some GOOD casting.
-
That doesn't really define Ig at all, though.
-
...and while there are a million actors I'd have picked over Radcliffe, I hope he can pull it off.
-
Have you even SEEN Game of Thrones? Those are some of the best kid actors I've ever seen.
-
WOMAN IN BLACK was actually a great little spine tingler, a creepy haunted house movie that you can cuddle up and watch with your wife / girlfriend (its classy horror rather than torture porn) - the Dojo recommends it!

Haven't mate - friends have been telling me to - might check it out - but generally I think I am right.
-
Haven't read this one yet, but it's sitting in my queue. Heart Shaped Box and 20th Century Ghosts were excellent. Damn, you'd think he was the son of some legendary horror writer or something...
-
I was lucky enough to see him do the theater performance of "Equus" and if you've never seen "My Boy Jack" it's available on DVD. But these were the two performances that convinced me that Radcliffe is a damn good actor who will get better and better as the years go on. Give him a chance folks and keep your eyes on his career - he's going to be one of our greats in years to come, like Oldman, McKellan and Finney have become.
-
..."became" as opposed to "have become"!
-
but youre comparing one actor who was in a glorified toy commercial movie series/guy who appeared in ANOTHER George Lucas cashgrab to someone who was in a series of movies based on thick ass novels. im not saying shia is or could be a better actor than radcliffe (or that radcliffe is even a good actor), but i just rather see shia do something dramatically different (rather than seeing radcliffe do something more adult) ps: its funny how child actors who show their penises are being offered this movie
-
True story.
-
Fucking hack. Haute Tension: Overhyped dreck. You knew the "twist" 5 minutes into that shitshow. And when you re-think those scenes, they make no sense. The Hills Have Eyes: Unnecessary remake that completely missed the point of the source material and what made it great. Musical score was un-goddam-forgivable. P2: More like PU. "Check it out, everyone, I cast Wes Bentley! He's not dead after all!" As infuriatingly predictable as Haute Tension. Mirrors: I liked this better when it was the scene in Poltergeist. And about a hundred other much much better horror movies before it. And Keifer Sutherland is your star??? Piranha 3D: Need I say anything? No, didn't think so.

by vetepalapinga
Hes made other movies. He sucks. I only want to see him in a coffin.
-
That's fair enough man. Different strokes for different folks and all.
-
after everything i have seen this looks pretty cool, and kudos for him keeping the sci-fi direction and not some overtly homo british drama
-
Ryan likes to go looking for "Hairy Pooter."
-
You're right it doesn't, I was trying to express that he needs to be believably hated. Radcliffe just seems like such a neutral, nice guy.
-
It will be amazing if the audience totally forgets Harry Potter and buys into the new character. Props to him and the director if they make this work.
-
...and doing well making a name for himself outside of Harry Potter. I think he could rock this and look forward to it.

re: "Haute Tension: And when you re-think those scenes, they make no sense."
by buggerbugger
That's rather the point, isn't it? Things aren't supposed to make sense when they're being recalled by a person with some form of dissociative identity disorder. She can recall being hunter **and** prey. When her psychopathic male personality begins to awaken, he fucks a severed head. When her female personality takes a back seat, she hides in a closet. Neither of these events, as seen in the movie, necessarily took place in the real world.
-
...cannot act. Why can't anyone in this thread see this? Woman in Black wasn't a bad little flick but Radcliffe let it down even though he barely had to act - just walk around a dark house and look curious. He's got no character and cannot communicate emotion. You'll see this when Horns comes out. Mark my words.
-
...mark them...

GREAT book, look forward to seeing how it's adapted. I really hope they nail it, because it has potential to be a brilliant film.

Why do people rate him, I'll never know.

We brits work for cheap.
-
I've never seen one of Dan Rads flicks, but I'm not loving the "wooden" comments.
-
Joe Hill was trying too hard to be his father (Stephen King, in case you didn't know) with 'Horns'. The flashbacks to when the characters are kids were 100% King and that actually took me out of the story somewhat. Also, the concept of the main guy, Ig, getting the horns and using their power is hardly even touched upon in the book. I want to see much more of their effect on people in the movie. The love story aspect is pretty good though. There is a letter that Ig reads near the end that actually made me tear up while reading, I'm not ashamed to admit!! I think Dan Radcliffe will just about be able to pull this off. Maybe he's young-looking enough for them not to cast a younger actor for the flashback stuff, they'll just wing it.
