Josh Trank's FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot Nabs A Writer!!
The Kidd here...
Fresh off the news that Josh Trank has officially been giving the job of rebooting the FANTASTIC FOUR reboot for 20th Century Fox, Jeremy Slater has now been handed the task of writing the script that helps us forget Tim Story's vision for Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and the Thing.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Slater, off the strength of his spec script TAPE 4 about the mythology of H.P. Lovecraft, which Lionsgate picked up, and the teen spy comedy MY SPY, which Jake Kasdan is now lined up to direct over at Universal, managed to land the tough job of making the Fantastic Four relevant again.
Perhaps a new writer is exactly what this project needs, especially if he's got a passion for the characters and the material. Recycling the same old hacks is really no way to reboot a franchise that's in need of a really fresh start. I'll be most curious to see if the origin story of the Four is told once again... we don't need it every time there's a restart, but, with so many people who checked out here after FANTASTIC FOUR, a new take on it may serve the reboot well.

It would be great if they could Tie this into the current Marvel Universe
by eric haislar
Marvel and Fox should make a deal.
-
let fans agree on the story and writing before filming starts....then there's no reason for them to complain when the movie comes out. try it!
-
He's got to be at the top of the list. Perfect!
-
How hard can that be - honestly - jesus - the fantastic four are the core of the marvel universe - they were the beginning - all it requires to be relevant is a talented writer who KNOWS the material and a dedication to hiring TALENTED actors...Dr Doom is a believable megalomaniac, there's metaphors galore in their for tyranical dictators gone nuts Of course, it won't happen - but making the FF relevant is super easy for smart people

How to tie it to the MCU without REALLY tying it to the MCU.
by Royston Lodge
Just like Amazing Spider-Man sorta hints at the Super Soldier program, without actually saying it, so could a FF movie.
-
He's one of marvel's most iconic villians. His voice alone should make you crap your pants. The guy from Nip-Tuck? A sniveling preppy? Please. Fix it.
-
But I love it. Its strengths that I think most geeks would agree on: The cast; The sense of whimsy The cast is mostly good, but Sue is just gorgeous and totally sells the girl-next-door-turned-into-a-superhero thing. And the movie is super-hokey, but in a whimsical, winking kind of way.
-
Reed Richards: Guy Pearce or Jon Hamm Sue Storm: Elizabeth Banks or Naomi Watts Johnny Storm: Aaron Paul Ben Grimm: Joel Edgerton or Dominic Lombardozzi Victor Von Doom: Nicolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) or VIGGO MORTENSEN. Ideally, I would've cast Michael Fassbender, but he's otherwise occupied :)
-
Good one. I was thinking Gerard Butler, either as Doom, or R.R.
-
Tom Hardy as Ben Grimm, Gina Carano as Susan Storm, Michael Fassbender as Reed Richards, and Taylor Klitsch as Johnny Storm.
-
As a movie version of FF 57-60 (Doomsday) FF 2 was actually pretty good. The nightmarish quality of Doom riding the Surfer's board worked for me. It's only if you look at the film as an adaptation of FF 48-50 (The Coming of Galactus) that it falls short due to the big G being a no show.
-
...but after Batman, I doubt they'd cast him. And please keep that charisma-free douche Gerard Butler away from my beloved FF.

one thing for sony to drive spidey into the ground and never give up rights...spidey's adversaries are not cornerstones of the marvel universe ff's are kirby created the most insane bad and good guys to populate the ff comics...and they were used everywhere look what happened to avengers without the skrull was really hoping they would hire seth grahame smith..cuz he is so scary talented

...till the property returns to Marvel...period.
-
If I were writing it I would start with Doom's childhood, college days with R.R. and on from there. Essentially you could have up to three actors playing him. He's a tragic figure, his journey into what he becomes could be an awesome movie in its own. Hell they should just do a Doom movie and include the F.F. halfway through.
-
has fail written all over it.... make it so cuz that is....THE FUCKING STAR WARS PREQUELS
-
Nothing with his childhood. I mean, I guess it worked with Magneto. That's the exception - I think!
-
As I was sayin', I think the Fantastic Four and Dr. Doom's origins work much better in the early 60's. Having already established a Marvel universe in that period with "First Class" gives them a great opening to set the FF then, too. <P> They probably won't go this way at all, but I think there's a lot of untapped potential in the FF origin story, especially if it's set in the 1960's at the beginning of the space race. <P> I mean, did I really want to see some kid get bit by a spider again? Not so much, but here you have rich industrialists (the Storms) financing Richard's prototype rocket/reusable spacecraft. After the project gets nixed by the government, Reed recruits his college buddy and ace test pilot Ben Grimm to fly it in secret. In a show of solidarity, they all go and, in a thrilling lift-off, become the first people in space (if set before 1961). Then they get exposed to heinous amounts of radiation, causing their ship to malfunction and Ben barely saves them all in a thrilling crash-landing from orbit. <P> Done right, and with a fair amount of realism, how could this not be thrilling? Yeah, I'm thinking of the most exciting parts of "The Right Stuff." Also, "Apollo 13" and even a few moments in De Palma's "Mission to Mars," where the thrill and dangers of actual nuts-and-bolts spaceflight are explored- what Cuaraon will be getting into in a big way with "Gravity." <P> Taking their time and adding realism to Batman's origin did not hurt Nolan's take at all. Otherwise, you'll likely just get another goofy and uninspiring scene like Tim Story's that played like a scyfy original movie. <P> Whatever the time and style they choose to go with, I am glad that this is moving forward, and here's hoping that it turns out to be brilliant.
-
Don't do anything with his childhood. I mean, I guess that worked with Magneto. But I think he's the exception - I think! And his adult version was played by a pretty good actor, so they probably could have had Jake Lloyd bending the Nazi fence and I still would've been impressed with Magneto because of McKellan.

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PISSED that the first and probably only appearance of the Silver Surfer on screen has to come in that awful plastic cartoony cheese ball miscast Fantastic Four franchise. I thought WETA made a great Surfer and Laurence Fishburne gave a great performance. I hope someday the Surfer has a chance to show up in a Marvel movie worth his time.

I vote Jennifer Carpenter (Debra from Dexter) for Sue Storm.
by Royston Lodge
-
The trend lately has often been to leave the true arch-nemesis for the sequel (i.e. The Joker, Green Goblin, Sinestro). I wouldn't be surprised if they go with Mole Man or Diablo or someone for the first flick and just drop hints of Dr. Doom to be followed up in the next one.
-
So I would save him for the first act of #2, and focus on reestablishing the FF in the first one. Assuming it was set in the 1960's, why not have Fassbinder's Magneto be the bad guy? Then, they don't have to waste time also establishing a new villain. <P> After that, The Silver Surfer also deserves his own movie- it's really Marvel's best and most epic Golden Age origin story- introducing the one-and-only, not-an-evil-space-cloud, Galactus. The Surfer could encounter both the FF and X-Men when he gets to Earth.
-

The Fox fuckers kept the Skrull out of the Avengers movie. They might as well use 'em for a decent FF movie.

They just didn't get it right in 1 or 2. Need to make Thing all CGI ala Hulk. And, blast it, let Ben Grimm CLOBBER something! Bruce Greenwood for Reed Richards. 'Nuff said.
-
Reed Richards: George Clooney would be awesome, but Jon madman Hamm would be great, too, 'specially if set in the '60's. <P> Sue Storm: Gotta be a real love story here. Nicole Kidman or Naomi Watts, Elizabeth Banks or Amy Adams, Anna Torv...? Just please, hire someone with talent! <P> Johnny Storm: I'd kinda be interested to see what Justin Timberlake did with the character. They guy can act, and adds a certain vulnerability that you will not find in "pretty boy" actors like Pine and Lautner. <P> Ben Grimm: Chiklis was really great, but for some reason, I'm still liking the idea of Bruce Willis. <P> Dr. Doom: (for #2) I have no idea who should play the guy in the suit- it doesn't matter, because the goddam mask is welded on- but clearly, Doom should be voiced by none other than James Earl Jones. Don't say "NOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Joss Weadon would fix this franchise in no time.

always have to take up the first half of a movie? Just show bits here and there in flashback instead. Having to sit through Spiderman getting bit and Uncle Ben dying again was painfully boring.

-
Money in the bank!!!

And keep the characters like the comics, I never understand it when they finally make a movie of a comic book that's been popular for like 40 years then some dick thinks it's a good idea to change the characters. "We have Dr Doom, one of the greatest villains in the history of fiction, an iconic figure who's backstory is part of what makes him who he is. Let's change it so instead he's a pretty boy and a friend of the team!" Brilliant
-
shame he's been in Batman though, doubt he'd do another comic book character
-
Kirk Cameron as Mister Fantastic Tara Reid as Sue Storm Clay Aiken for Johnny Storm Jim Belushi as The Thing Michael Fassbender as Doctor Doom

Give us the Fantastic Four getting their butts kicked by a Marvel villain, and having to chose between calling on the Avengers or pulling themselves together. I would rather see a FF team that is clearly a well-oiled machine, than sit through another origin story.

I guess it's hard to make it any worse than the first one. Second one had some good stuff (supporting roles and the Surfer). It's almost fun, at this point, to go through the things they got wrong with these movies. Like playing travel bingo or something.

I'm finding it hard to care about any Marvel movie that isn't part of the MCU. I haven't even seen the new Spidey yet.
-
I once had the idea that they should show the origin in a trailer for a fictional Fantastic Four movie that they ambush Reed with on a chat show.
-
Please make actors age appropriate and appearance similar as it is in the comics. Reed - slender brainy 40's -50's Susan - smart and pretty (not a runway model) mid 30's - 40's Johnny - athletic, handsome mid 20-'s Grimm Lower East Side working-class guy 40's - 50's Doom (and yes you have to have doom in a ff reboot) find tall slavic or "Romani" accent - mid 40's -50's
-
Brian as Reed, clearly the brains of the outfit Meg as Sue - no one ever notices she's there - Peter as The Thing - EZ so Lois as Alicia Chris as Torch This ... could ... work!

Sue Storm's "invisibility" would only be psychological. She feels like she is invisible to everyone else, specially to Reed. Mr Fantastic, a really intelligent guy in a business suit. Ugh Julian McMahon... I'm hoping they're NOT going to bend to the actor's vanity this time around? Don't show his face. Just don't do it. Go the Darth Vader/Silver Surfer route. Of course the FF movie can't be in the MCU, however...
by Royston Lodge
...as I mentioned earlier it's possible to hint at a connection. Heck, it would be even easier to do with FF than it would be with Spidey, thanks to Fox owning the rights to X-Men. After all, what is the Weapon X program if not simply a spin-off of the Super Soldier program by a different name? So, write into the FF movie some sort of reference to the Weapon X program, and then when Marvel gets all the rights back it can simply make it official that, in the MCU, Super Soldier and Weapon X are simply different names for the same program. Simple.
-
Make it for grown ups, actually. Keep Chiklis, just make him CG and actually taller than a human. Good looking 30-something blondes should be easy to find for Susan Storm. I couldn't care less who plays her As long as she doesn't look like she just turned 20 like Alba did. And start the movie with a quick Buck Rogers like recap of what happened to them.
-
Batman Beyond....if they make it. He would be cool as Mr.Fantastic too.
-
Yeah, she'd be perfect. Good call. Clooney, not so much. Bruce Greenwood perfectly embodies the character in the comic. Before they made him a teen wonder with ben franklin glasses, that is...
-
It's Fox - it will be "meh" at best. You can change writers, director, cast - but you still have the same alleged "creative executives" in charge, and that's the difference right there. If Marvel ain't producing it, I'm not interested. (And I've been a faithful Marvel zombie since 1973!) Can't even work up the enthusiasm to see the new Spider-Man. Ain't no way Sony or Fox will give up the rights to these characters - they'll keep trying to wring more moolah out of each tent-pole picture, and only make more crappy pix. My only hope is that they'd give up on some of the lesser characters (like Daredevil) - but I doubt that will happen - unless Marvel/Disney ponies up some big cash for those rights. Cuz that's all that talks in Hollywood - taste and good films certainly don't!

-
They have the most boring super powers ever, the source sucks and the movies will suck.
-
I think I need a rebooty call...
-
I can see why you might complain about Spidey. After all, it was 2/3rds of a good trilogy and it's hard to forget Raimi/Maguire's Spider-Man, especially since they produced Spider-Man 2, which is a bona-fide classic and perhaps the best superhero film ever made. (Yeah, yeah, Dark Knight, apples & oranges.) But in this case, it makes sense to reboot the FF. The public definitely has a taste for fun, brightly colored super-team movies (AVENGERs, cough, gazillion dollars, cough cough)... and Fox has the second-biggest superhero team on their roster. They would be crazy NOT to make the movie. Fantastic Four could be a great, fun, heartwarming spectacle if done right. Unlike Raimi's' Spidey movies, Tim Story's films were a huge misstep and the property is ripe for rebooting, because no one is going to miss Story's direction or Alba/Groffwhatever's acting. And everyone is STILL watering at the mouth to see Victor Von Doom translated to screen after the McMahon debacle.

Jessica Alba doesn't have a lot to offer except lips, tits and ass, and they hardly showed any of that in the movies they made. If ever there was a crappy movie needing a reboot, it's FF. I like to see super heroes do super things. The second hulk movie gave me those moments, ironman does, superman does, spiderman can, the avengers did. Batman can in a real world setting. F4? Stretchy guy. Force field and invisibility. A flying match. The thing has possibilities. None of them excites me to see what they can do within the context of the story.

First of all, the concept has been already made into a great movie, The Incredibles (which I love but Brad Bird was obviously 'inspired' by the FF). Secondly, the Fantastic Four was one of, if not the first 'public' superheroes. They are public figures/celebrities - I'd say that's pretty timely considering the current climate of celebrity culture. So there's plenty of room for humour and satire... along with science fiction adventure which is what is the hallmark of FF stories. The fact that they are going with Josh Trank is exciting, not only because he's creative and has a feel for the genre but because he's like, 1000% times better than Tim Story.
