Purty Pictures from GLADIATOR

Published at:  Apr 17, 2000 4:51:14 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here. Today I got a little press packet from Dreamworks with a whole host of images on a cd-rom with that art from the GLADIATOR poster on the top of it. So I dipped it into my computer and decided... well, hell's bells... Looky what I have to share. You know, it's funny, sometimes running this site reminds me of Show-N-Tell... I love it. This first shot you'll see is of Russell Crowe and Richard Harris in the Emperor's tent after the first... sequence.... of the film. Richard has a fairly deep down personal scene here with ol General Maximus which leaves Crowe a bit stunned.

This next shot is of Richard Harris as Marcus Aurelius. He is a tired old man, that has realized that it's his time to go. He's a sad tragic, once great ruler... if that.

Next up is a shot from the scene where Marcus Aurelius has come to talk with General Maximus after a battle of... EPIC proportions. Right about this point in the film, you can feel your pulse pounding through the temple in your head. Bum bump... bum bump.... bum bump.... bum bump... Your heartbeat is beginning to level again.

The following scene is the first Gladiator fight that Maximus and Juba (played by Djimon Hounsou) have to survive. They are chained together and given lessor weapons. The crowd roaring for their deaths.

Next up is a close up of Proximo, played by our recently fallen god, Oliver Reed. He's so good in this film. Really, truthfully... he's just wonderful. To sit here and think that Renny Harlin replaced him in CUTTHROAT ISLAND as the lead villain... well, after watching this, you'll understand why Renny is Renny and Ridley Scott is a God..

Here comes the mean ass trident staring ol Maximus right on in the face. The Spaniard as he's called... What a great scene coming up. Heh... God, i can't to see this one again.

Oh yeah... and then there's this little bitty shot... Nothing grande or spectacular... just one of those tiny little shots to remind you that this is just basically a one-act play done with very few props on a mostly black stage.

    by lshb

I'm looking forward to this film, and particularly to seeing the reincarnation of Draaba from Spartacus back to finally finish kicking some Roman ass. So much glorious hype...whenever this film opens nationally, it's not soon enough.

    I can't wait!

    by daredevil

I love the look and feel of this movie! And the actors couldn't be better (Too bad to hear about Oliver Reed though. That guy was an awesome character actor.) Ridley is the man. The only thing I find funny is all the talk of the great special effects. Not that I think they're bade, I think they're great too, but you know there are a bunch of people that will say they are great, that in 6 months those same people are going to be posting that the entire movie *including* the effects SUCKED! It happened with Phantom Menace. Everyone loved that flick at first, now they say it sucks. The effects for Phantom Menace are the best effects yet done, but people say "the gungan battle scene was terrible" or "I could tell that effect was fake." Come on, it's the same shot as it was a year ago when they thought it was good. They just have to have something to whine about I guess.
Can't anyone stick to their guns one way or the other? I thought Phantom Menace was great (with the exception of Jar Jar) and a year later I think the same thing! Hopefully everyone that thinks Gladiator rocks now will think it is just as good in a year....

Harry, you could have at least had a spoiler warning!

    by toe jam

Goddamn, that last picture looks awesome...but, it just about gives away the ending (or what I'm guessing is the ending). I do realize that anyone with half a brain can predict that this movie is gonna have an ending like that, but...jeez...why does Dreamworks send out press kits that have spoiler photos?

I have no frickin' clue what Harry is talking about. Those explanations are about as easy to decipher as Jar Jar Binks reading the sanskrit translation of "Much Ado About Nothing." Whatever he said, those pictures are cool as hell.

    regarding KS and Hans Zimmer...

    by aiki

I personally feel that while he's no John Williams, Hans Zimmer is one of the finest soundtrack artists working today. Crimson Tide is, with the exception of the original Star Wars soundtrack, my all time favorite film score. Do you think that there is a reason why they use that score for most of the big action films (including ID4 and Rules of Engagement) use that theme to hype their trailers? I also feel that his work on True Romance was very good as well. Just my two cents though...

    Dash101 (and my thoughts)

    by monster rain

The film comes out May 5 in the States, and anywhere from the 18th to the 24th for the rest of the world. In the UK, it's slated for August 4. As for my thoughts: Ridley Scott has lately been a director with little to back up the exultations he has received. "Alien", "Blade Runner" and a few others are excellent, but in recent years, his track record has been spotty. "Gladiator" will bring him right back to the top. I can't wait! Aghghaghagh! May 5, please come soon!

This is just the FIRST HALF OF THE MOVIE !!!

    by syd mead

Other than the shots of the first
    gladiator fight...this is just
the beginning of Gladiator. If you want spectacular vistas...there's a scene with the evil new Caesar over looking Rome at sunset that's burnt
into the back of my skull. These pictures don't give too much away.
But who ever said this movie is boring and needs to be edited down, should have whatever's left of their testies removed with dull pliers.

If music be the food of love...

    by the salem slut

How can anyone say that Scott doesn't know anything about music? whatever sins he commits in the soundtrack dept will always be forgiven in light of the breathtaking score which graced the final print of ALIEN. (The essence of which was carried over to ALIENS which is the most effective bit of scoring this movie slut has ever heard!)

    rusty's crimes and misdemeanors

    by jbreen

Woo-hoo! That ol' Rusty charm is apparently still in force. The man who has dust-ups on a regular basis and manages to offend people everywhere was trying to crack onto Winona Ryder recently, when his flirtatious remarks went over the line into plain old offensive. Winona of course called on Matt Damon to sort things out. Matt quickly realised that Rusty Crowe was somehwat bigger and bowed out with a plea that Rusty behave himself. Our boy responded with a whole bunch more of expletive like remarks before storming off in a huff. What a guy. Meanwhile Frances O'Connor made some remarks yesterday that Rusty could come back here to Oz and have any project he wanted made and could stretch himself. I don't know if that was a dig but the mental picture of our Rusty stretching himself is one that makes me a little queasy. Not as queasy though as the thought of Rusty returning and reforming his rock band. Eeeuuwww!

    Russell Crowe/Gladiator

    by m_sassy

Well the count down is on, for me at least, till Gladiator comes out. May 5th, I can't wait. Oh I would love to be at the premier. Sigh, oh it will be so nice to see a good movie again.Do you think Russell Crowe will get an Oscar for this role? I hope so, the only problem is he doesn't kiss a--, which seems to be what you have to do to get an Oscar. Thats one of the things I like most about him, he doesn't really care what others think, just likes what he is doing , and I hope he keeps on doing it.
I do have to say that this ryder thing is sad. I'm glad she didn't like what he said. Stupid if you ask me, which your not, but thought I would give my opinion anyway. What do men see in her, she's a good actress, I'll give her that, not a great actress, but good. I just don't get what he would have seen in her in the first place.
At least RC has more movies coming out. I can't wait to see the trailers for the movie he is doing with Meg Ryan. And does anyone know what the movie he is doing with Jodie Foster Directing, is about?
Can't wait to see gladiator, 16 more days, yipee. Gladiator, Gladiator, Gladiator.Such excitement.

    Awesome!

    by jennykirkrules!

Wow! The commercial for this movie is the most awesome thing I have seen since the original Star Wars! This movie was made for me! I've always loved ancient Rome and fascism. Phantom Menace is such a lame kids' movie compared to this. Darth Maul is a sissy compared to these gladiators! What a grand work of art this is. Movies this great are so extremely rare. I see one lame stupid little movie after another on my satellite TV service. I love the way Gladiator perfectly captures the strength, glory, and grandeur of ancient Rome. This is a MAN'S movie baby! I've always wanted to see the Colosseum in its full, ancient glory. Oh yea, I did take a year of Latin in junior high, but I don't remember it any more. I have found commercials, clips, and trailers of movies to be a reliable indicator of what the movie is going to be like and how good it's going to be. This movie is going to be one of the greatest ever. I see almost all movies on my satellite TV service, but I may have to go to the theater for this one. (And for the few people who trash this movie, you should have a splintered pike shoved up your ass.)

    Gladiator pics, etc.

    by skrinard

I've been visiting your site now for a few weeks, and thoroughly enjoy it. And yes, I'm a woman. Also a published novelist, and I love big screen epics and adventure. (Also absurd humor, so I really enjoy the little animated Gif of the webowner as gladiator!) I can't wait for GLADIATOR; the pics only made me more anxious to see it. Can you put up more pictures, pretty-please?

I hope that GLADIATOR touches off a new wave of well-made historical epics, without the piousness of the old 50's versions. These are the kinds o fmovies I lose myself in.

Just saw the submarine movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. Heard some women felt "maternal' about the boys in the sub. Not me; I was -one- of them. And I'm happy married and 41 . . . I just grew up learning to relate to male characters and vicariously enjoying the fun stuff adventure heroes get to do!

    Best,

    Sue Krinard
