Joe Cornish Goes To RUST!

Published at: July 12, 2012, 8:43 a.m. CST by Nordling

Nordling here.

ATTACK THE BLOCK's Joe Cornish has found his next project, according to Deadline, and it's in the comic vein - it's called RUST: VISITOR IN THE FIELD, written by Royden Lepp and it's about a young boy working on his father's farm whose idyllic life gets interrupted by a kid named Jet Jones  in a jetpack fighting a giant robot right out on their field.  Turns out the world is in the midst of a giant robot war and Jet and the boy, Roman, become quick friends.  I don't know much more than that as I decided to quit reading the synopsis and will buy the damn thing blind.

I am reading however, that many critics called the story very reminiscent of THE IRON GIANT, and if that's true, this seems like a no-brainer for Cornish.  Along with ATTACK THE BLOCK (which isn't exactly a kids' movie but bear with me) Cornish really seems to be tapping into those movies we saw as kids and making modern-day movies from that background that we're going to want to see.  RUST will be made at Fox, with Aline Brosh McKenna (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA) writing the script.  I'm a huge ATTACK THE BLOCK fan, so I'm all over this.

Nordling, out.  Follow me on Twitter!

I thought it was his next project. Friggin' Hollywood. I'm sure RUST will be good, but I want someone good to helm SC.

    Never heard of it, but....

according to Amazon, the book is called "Visitor in the field", not "Vision in the field" Also, been following Joe Cornish for years, and I think he has a create childlike sense of fun. This sounds like a great project of him. Fans of his should definitely check out his old radio show (with Adam Buxton).... http://www.adamandjoe.com/downloads/bbc-6music-radio-show/

The Adam & Joe TV show on Channel 4 in UK was good as well. Animated Star Wars toys before Robot Chicken popularized it.

I have faith - I think he's a kidder/troller. A-Team would have been better had Joe Cornish directed it, mind.

When the crap is Adam Strange gonna get a movie?!?!

    by Mickster_Island

For Pete's sake! He's been around way longer than Rocketeer and Rust. The longer they wait, the more corrupted he gets. Indiana Jones already borrowed his origin story. http://pinterest.com/pin/102879172707816560/ And his look has been free to change since 08 or so. And now that Teen Titans cartoon is messing with his whole point as a character. C'mon Leo!! You own the rights - make a good Adam Strange movie!

I wanted to like Attack the Block

    by Beezbo

But the idea was much better than the execution.

  • Should have been a no brainer but i think because the kids were pretty much scum and were never really redeemed it was hard to idetify. It also suffered from not being more of a comedy. i know it wasn`t supposed to be but the genre kinda dictated that it should have been. Plus casting nick Frost didn`t help in the tone.

ARE THERE ANY ORIGINAL IDEAS ANYMORE?

    by Mike Soiseth

Isnt this ROBOPOCALPSE or whatever it is that Speilberg is making, with a touch of THE IRON GIANT? It just all looks so tierd. Give the funny books a rest, Hollywood, and give us something new.

And met Royden Lepp at the Emerald City Comic Con. It's a great book with some with simple yet effective artwork. Really looking forward to Vol 2 when it comes out later this year. Totally recommend checking it out.

I've met Royden as well, at a cartoonists meetup.

He seems cool. His day job is in computer game animation and he does graphic novels as his other job.
