Cool News
Quint sees DREDD at Comic-Con and finds it to be a fun and violent piece of exploitation cinema!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I was lucky enough to cap off Preview Night of Comic-Con 2012 with a screening of the upcoming Dredd, adapted from the very popular 2000 AD character.

Now this is how you handle a reboot. Stallone’s Judge Dredd sucked and I’m not just speaking from vague memories (I recently stumbled upon it on TV and looked on in horror) or from the crybaby uber-fan perfectionist angle (I’ve never read one 2000 AD cover to cover, much to my geek shame). The filmmakers and studio looked at a crap film with great potential and started from scratch, deciding to get right what Stallone’s film got wrong.
Again, not speaking as a die hard fan of the character, I can say that this Dredd, as played by Karl Urban, is a far stronger character. He has a simple job and he does it with little emotion. There’s not an over-complicated frame-up plot device here. It’s a very, very, very, very simple story. Tough cop and his unlikely new partner get trapped in Mega tower and have to fight their way to freedom.
In that respect, yes… the similarities to the incredible action film The Raid did cross my mind. I have to imagine when director Pete Travis sat down to watch The Raid he just kept muttering “Oh, fuck me… fuck me… Goddamnit!” over and over again, but I know this film was well into production when The Raid began screening, so I’m sure it was just one of those nasty movie-world coincidences.
It’s a shame, but the action is so different that it’s quick to shake The Raid off. For better or worse, Dredd’s such a wildly different character than Iko Iwais’ Rama that it changes the whole tone of the set up. Rama didn’t make it through any fight without taking a hit. Dredd is much more of a superhero in that regard. There’s only two points in the movie where he’s on the outs, really.
Olivia Thirlby’s Anderson is the more vulnerable one. The drama really revolves around her. She’s a newbie, a cadet in training that isn’t all that spectacular in any combat or strategic regard, but she’s given a chance because of her special gift. In this post apocalyptic wasteland there are many deaths due to radiation… and some surprising aftereffects. Most mutations show themselves physically, but Anderson’s mutation is that she has a little psychic touch.
It sounds super cheesy, but they use it very well. Think of her like a fledgling Professor X. She struggles with their prisoner (played by Wood Harris), but not in a physical way. It’s a mind game and she’s far his superior. They do some pretty clever stuff with it, actually. They handle that aspect of the movie with surprising smarts if I’m going to be a bit doting.
That’s not to say Thirlby plays this character as weak. There comes a point early on in the film where she has to pass judgment and she does so.

Three things to follow up that picture. One, yes, the bullet trajectory is wrong, but it doesn’t play that way in the film. Two, she’s not wearing a Judge helmet and we never see her in one for a very specific reason: it interferes with her abilities. This fact does not go by without a smart-ass comment from Dredd, by the way. Three, look at that brain matter!
That’s just the tip of the iceberg. You can say many things about this movie, but tame is not a word you’ll see associated with it. In terms of gore, they swing for the fences. With some very creative use of super slow motion (thanks to a plot device involving an inhaled drug that slows perception down to a crawl) we get some choice violence, the kind of graphic violence ratings boards really, really hate. If you’ve ever wanted to see what a bullet going through a dude’s jaw looked like in slow motion, then by God Dredd’s the movie for you!
Karl Urban lets his ego go here and embraces what many actors would fear to be a one-note character. On the surface Dredd’s not much more than an eye-less scowl.

Stallone couldn’t stay in the mask for even a quarter of his movie, but Urban does not take it off once. Not once. Which means his performance relies on line delivery and body language.
It’s a helluva thing for an actor to take his eyes out of a performance and Urban has to be applauded for his bravery in doing that. It not only works, it makes his character so much more interesting than if he lost the helmet halfway through or some other convenient bullshit. This Dredd really is an unmovable embodiment of the law with a slight touch of humanity underneath it all.
From a filmmaking standpoint this film also gets high marks. It doesn’t shy away from the exploitation elements at all, but it also treats them with respect. It might revel a bit in the violence, but it’s all for an overall tone and feel that is somewhere on the right side of the Punisher: War Zone-esque guilty pleasure line. It’s a pleasure-pleasure movie, not a guilty-pleasure movie. There are some really thoughout character beats here, so it’s not a hollow exercise in violence.
They don’t forget the dark comedy elements, the action is well done, the guns are badass (who doesn’t want to a weapon that can switch over to an explosive round with a simple voice command?) and minus a couple of jarring dark digital photography moments the whole thing is crisp and easy to follow.
My only complaint is I don’t think they did as good of a job setting up the geography of the building as they could have. That’s one thing The Raid did really well. I always had an understanding of where the good guys were and where the bad guys were. Here it seemed more random and conveniently empty at times. But that’s a tiny nitpick and one that didn’t really bother me while watching, just something I thought about as I was writing this review.
As with most films if they get the characters right that’s the battle won. I really liked Thirlby and Urban in this film and I wanted to watch them on this little adventure. I even liked Lena Headey’s Ma-Ma, the boss lady villainess. It’s hard for me to see her and not think of her as Cersei Lannister now, but she seemed to be having a bunch of fun in the movie and was a believable hardass.

Anyway, the flick’s strong, with a hell of a great sound design and some crazy Verhoeven-level violence/satire moments that made me smile. From the reaction of the hardcore Judge Dredd fans in the crowd, I’d say the fans will be happy with this movie, too. Speaking as an ignoramus (what else is new?), I think fans of exploitation flicks will enjoy it as well. Anybody who enjoys letting go and having a good time at the movies will get a huge kick out of this film.
Now, I sleep. Big couple of days ahead of me!
Be sure to click the Twitter link below and follow me as I hit Comic-Con hard and heavy. I’ll be tweeting reactions of footage presentations and Q&A tidbits from all the big panels over the next few days including The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Marvel’s Iron Man 3, Raimi’s Oz, The Great and Powerful, Django Unchained, Elysium, The Hobbit, Man of Steel, Looper and more.

Say what you will about the Stalone version, but when he had the helmet on, he looked JUST like Dredd from the comic book
by art123guy
-
I fucking love Judge Dredd. Looking forward to this - although I wish the city and vehicles looked a bit more futuristic. Still looking forward to this though.
-
Oh, and Alex Garland, get your head outta yer ass! The people want the Dark Judges in 'Dredd 2', not fuckin' 3! Moomba has spoken!
-
July 12, 2012, 6:36 a.m. CST
art123guy - nope, Stallone looked close - not just like him. And this time round that's a good thing.
by irishraidersfan
Having a literal 'big eagle' hanging off your shoulder is totally impractical. Personally, I love the new movie uniform. What did you expect, yellow spandex???
-
Quint, you've never told me you were a 2000AD virgin. Well, I know what I'm getting you!
-
I knew they'd crack it!! Lovely to see the positive reviews online!
-
A film that I am actually looking forward to gets a decent review! Can't wait...
-
I’ve never read one 2000 AD cover to cover, much to my geek shame
-
'I’ve never read one 2000 AD cover to cover, much to my geek shame' : Word of advice, 2000ad readers have never been geeks.
-
Damn right! The only Geeks in 2000AD were in `The VC's`;-)
-
This film sounds great - now my most anticipated film of the year - because I love my old school 2000ad - and really happy they've nailed it.

From the trailer....im staying VERY FAR away from this film
by havehope
Sorry...the trailer should sell the film. It just made me run from it. Not convinced at all
-
with the tone seemingly nailed... just went to the top of my list
-
The trailers made me worrying on that level. Can't wait to see this!

that the source material has been respected in regards to the helmet staying on.

I'm there! Even though the last Dredd comic I read was JUDGE DREDD vs. ALIENS .. was pretty good as far as Aliens Xovers go.

was that figure ever clarified as weekend or total etc - just seems kind of low in this day and age? What did it cost to make? Would have been seeing this anyway but really looking forward to it now

Ok, I'll watch it...but I still think Stallone is the LAAAWRR
by wcolbert
Something about Stallone's early 90's movies just gives me the warm fuzzies. Especially Demolition Man. Don't understand why Dennis leary harps on it so much...it's one of the better things he's been in. Satire is a good thing. Eerily accurate portents of the future are even better. We're almost to the point the world is in in Demolition Man...minus the "weapons only exist in a museum" angle...like people are ever going to stop shooting each other...but the other things...kind of funny how this is going.
-
I should fucking think not, otherwise there is zero point in doing the film at all. Dredd is the LAW, and while there's a character behind that you NEVER need to see his face. Christ, I remember a prog from the 80's where he took a shower and he kept his frakkin helmet on!
-
But I can't get past the helmet. Anyone who actually would wear such a thing would have zero peripheral vision, and those red stripes that crosscross in front would block a lot of direct vision. They're completely impractical, and they're the kind of thing that would take me out of the film all together. I normally don't complain about stuff like this, but this has bothered me since the first photo was released of the costume.
-
Obviously Dredds helmet has augmented reality. He can digitally adjust his field of vision.
-
July 12, 2012, 7:28 a.m. CST
Ha! For some reason, I've had a good feeling about this film from the start....
by ChickenStu
sounds fucking MENTAL. Exactly the way a Judge Dredd film would be. I too am only vaguely familiar with the original comic, but familiar enough to know that the Stallone version fucked things up. This sounds like the real deal and probably how they should've made the movie in the damn first place. My ass is in the seat on opening night, no two ways about it. Also, my oldest kid thinks the Stallone movie is good and doesn't understand why I hate it. Can't wait to take him to a REAL JUDGE DREDD movie.
-
That's how you make a good trashy action flick.
-
July 12, 2012, 7:38 a.m. CST
but I'm not shelling out $15 to see this first run in the multiplex
by Spandau Belly
Maybe when it hits the last run cinema for $5 or a rental.
-
Mind you, the John Carter movie was kinda sorta good, and bombed horribly...
-
As horrible as the Stallone move is, the ABC Warrior is one of the coolest robest designs in film history - in my opinion, of course. It could do to be in a better film.
-
That line alone makes me want to see this movie. If the film makers and Urban have stuck to this one point, I am willing to bet they have embraced a lot of the tings that Dredd fans want.
-
July 12, 2012, 7:47 a.m. CST
This is one of those movies that deserves your support...
by dj_bollocks
It might not have Avengers style FX and big budget behind it, but if you don't support it you're clearly just going to get more Total Recall, Daredevil and FF reboots - who knows another Lord Of The Rings reboot around the corner... We need some of the underdogs to do well and this is a bona fide underdog. It gets my support.

Just watched the trailer again. I love the bit where bullets are flying everywhere and Dredd is running through them - scowl permanently in place...
by ChickenStu
I also love that bit where the guys moans about how they can never get a Judge into that tower and Dredd says "Well you can now..." I just love his whole "don't give a fuck" attitude. I always liked Karl Urban and I think he's gonna fucking ROCK the house in this shit.
-
July 12, 2012, 7:52 a.m. CST
FUCKING FANTASTIC!!!!! The good word on this is superb!!
by Hint_of_Smegma
Some of us have waited since 1977 for this movie.....and it's looking like its worth it. With word of mouth this strong and uniformly positive, it looks for sure to break that 50 mill sequel barrier. Roll on the Origins/Cursed Earth mash up story for the next and the Dark Judges in the third! Great days for 2000AD fans!!
-
...as a UK kid born in the early 70's who was into sci-fi, Dredd is straight from my childhood. Just wish they'd given him the Lawgiver Mk1 rather than the chunky more practical Lawgiver they've tooled him up with here. The Lawgiver Mk1 is as much Dredd as the helmet is - it just completes his silhouette.
-
July 12, 2012, 7:55 a.m. CST
If this makes the coin they're looking for - they've got to do Judge Death in the next film - just in case they don't get to make a third...
by ChickenStu
-
July 12, 2012, 7:57 a.m. CST
Art 123 guy. No stallone did NOT look like Dredd from the book.
by Hint_of_Smegma
Too short. Helmet design different. Cod fucking piece. The difference in the uniform here is they've made it practical. Even Wagner is praising the uniform, as he is the whole film, and he is well known to have hated the Stallone travesty.
-
July 12, 2012, 8:05 a.m. CST
He keeps his helmet on! I'm not joking I hope this does really well...
by Andrew Coleman
For that kind of movie some i'm hoping $60 million here and the same over seas. Studio's have been super pussies when it comes to helmets/masks on heroes. Look at Spider-man. Thor wears his helmet ONCE! In two movies. Even Iron Man they find anyway possible to keep him out of the suit or so the helmet comes off. Only Nolan's and Burton's Batman's have done it right really. Now though if Urban seriously was cool with never taking it off... Well he already had my respect but he's up to one of my favs. I'm very much down for a movie that isn't scared. Studio's seemed so scared of trying something different because they might offend some sheep like people living in the middle of no where. I'm seeing this opening weekend hands down.
-
July 12, 2012, 8:11 a.m. CST
oh and a character named Cassandra Anderson? Seriously?
by Spandau Belly
If I had to play Dredd, you'd have 3 hours of bloopers for every time I flubbed and referred to the character as "Cassanderson".
-
It's a world gone so wrong that the police have been empowered to absorb the powers of judiciary as well while running around in the heat of the moment - a truly bad idea! But ripe with dramatic potential. I hope the fascist angle is played as in Verhoeven's Troopers. It needs to be a warning of a possible future.
-
The Judges are the Police, Judiciary and the combined Armed Forces all rolled into one. @hahas... Grant Morrison is currently in the process of writing a Rogue Trooper movie.
-

I like the Stallone Dredd enough to probably buy the blu-ray
by Autodidact
I'm a sucker for big movies with that mid-90s effects feel.
-
Based his Dredd's face (chin) on Stallone's face. Clint eastwood was supposed to be his character (dirty harry). Dredd is Robocop's justice without question and dirty harry's shoot everyone who gets in my way policy.
-
and you usually are. Other than the Beano and Dandy, 2000AD were the only comics I read as a kid I hope they have other blocks in it with names like Roddy Piper or my all time favourite favorite Dean Gaffney Block! Also I'd prefer they do the Judgment Day story for the sequels with Sabbat. Although it may not be as good as I remember when I was younger.

-
July 12, 2012, 8:55 a.m. CST
@irishraidersfan & hint_of_smegma...I'm not talking about the costume, with the helmet, Stallone's snarl made him Dredd to me
by art123guy
-
from the trailer, this film's Mega City One doesn't look much like the imagery from the comics (granted my Dredd comic reading is minimal). It looks a little too neat and sterile. Could be budget restrictions, or just the fact that Mega City is fucking vast and contains lot of different places. Not sure if I'll like the film but I'm approaching it with no cynicism. I like the actors involved. And it sounds like the makers made some sound decisions (like even keeping Dredd's helmet on the whole time), and not having the story be over-complicated. Somewhere in an alternate universe there's a Paul Verhoven-directed Dredd movie. But this one might actually be close enough.
-
July 12, 2012, 8:59 a.m. CST

2000AD have been putting out big chunky collections of Dredd stories in chronological order for a while now - Like Marvel Essentials or DC Showcase. They are finally into the colour stories if you buy one of the later ones. If you were to buy a collection of a single arc then America is probably the one to look for - ebing re-released soon I believe. As for other 2000AD films, I would kill to see a proper Nikolai Dante. I'd also be amused to see Sinister Dexter - two hitmen in the far future that's all kinds of action craziness.
-
helmet, if he never ever takes it off?
-
As a lapsed fan of the comic, I'm definitely looking forward to the movie now!
-
July 12, 2012, 9:19 a.m. CST
please tell me it doesn't end with Dredd and Anderson taking the drug to even the field with the bad guys.
by hank henshaw
Judge Dredd would rather die than break the law. Might check it out, but I still think it looks to cheap, and Mega-City One look is wrong.
-
...the action is so different that you could easily disregard THE RAID while watching DREDD, but THE HUNGER GAMES was totally ruined for you because you just couldn't let go of BATTLE ROYALE while watching it even though the only thing they have in common is kids fighting to the death. I'm not even defending THE HUNGER GAMES as a good film I'm just saying you decided not to like it before you saw it.
-
July 12, 2012, 9:25 a.m. CST
Great news! Never taking off the helmet is a great sign...
by LabattsBleu
it shows that the film makers and actors understand the character. Sounds like a solid movie that won't kill at the box office, but will have a solid cult following (ie blu-ray sales) like Chronicles of Riddick...which will allow it to have some sequels - albeit none of them huge in scale. looking forward to seeing it and owning it on blu-ray too!
-
I´m still drunk.

The Judges are the military, for proof you should check out The Apocalypse War. Also, yes, the Grant Morrison Rogue Trooper movie is definitely in development. Ihave faith in Morrison; he is a former 2000A.D. Alumni, after all.

i read a simullar review from IGN that praised this remake while trashing the 1995 version. And regardless of what many may think, this can't be nowhere as bad as Helmet-less Dredd with his faithful sidekick Schieder-Man.
-
July 12, 2012, 9:47 a.m. CST
It's cool that DREDD may be a good genre film. I think most of the Reagan-era satire won't shine through. I hope ANTHRAX's Judge Dredd song, I AM THE LAW, is used in the movie.
by Stereotypical Evil Archer
I AM THE LAW is such a great song.

What a somewhat disappointing Year for Summer blockbusters; Batman Forever, Jedge Dredd and to a lesser extent...Mortal Kombat. Didn't Congo debuted that year as well?

I wouldn't have minded Stallone's removal of the helmet if it was handled in this way...
by ChickenStu
The problem is, he volunterally takes off his helmet in a scene where he is talking to Max Von Sydow. He just removes it, stands there and has a chat to him. A better way to have done it - would be a scene where it's forcibly removed from him when he's found guilty of the murder he was framed for. I was always under the impression that in the comics he wore the helmet constantly because of a facial disfigurment. So I think it would've been cool if there were some meaty scars on the top half of Stallone's face. I think many fans may have forgiven it if it was handled this way...
-
It Wasnt a BAD movie for its day, from the standpoint of one who never gave a rat's ass about the comic or even read it- as early 90s scifi goes, it was a-ok.
-
Dredd has had only 2 movies and no TV show so Dredd fans like myself have had to wait a silly amount of time for a GOOD Dredd movie. And if this one sucked how many years would we have to wait for another crack if ever? Batman fans have the camp TV series. Burtons batman, Nolans Batman, the great animated show pre season 4. and the (shrug) schumaker movies. Now imagine if the only batman film that existed was Batman and Robin and Batman begins was about to be released and somebody says "batman and robin was good, leave it alone". What would you say then?

The 1995 movie begins with a block of text explaining you the world of Dredd. More often than not, that is a bad sign.
by hank henshaw
It seems that the only time that has worked was with Star Wars. Maybe Blade Runner. Other than that, the block war was almost acceptable, even if it felt like it was just a dozen or so armed people fighting, between both towers. The ABC Warrior animatronic was cool, and Mean Machine's make-up was great. That's about it.

The trajectory of a bullet, or it's exit from a body, does NOT depend on the direction that it entered said body. Bullets bounce, ricochet, and tumble, exiting in sometimes random locations.

I'M A DREDD FAN FROM THE BEGINNING AND I LIKE THE STALLONE FLICK.
by LORDOFLIGHT
Sorry for fuckin shouting but I'm getting tired of a vocal bunch of people constantly saying how crap the Stallone flick was. Sure it got some things wrong and it wasn't the Dredd film fans wanted BUT it's still not that bad a movie and it still got parts of the Dredd universe quite well.

There's a chase scene at the start of the film, and the 'block' in which the rest of the film takes place is so massive that some people live their whole lives without venturing outside ...
by sauchieboy
... Megacity One is really lots of little city states (blocks) massed in one area. None of the hugely positive online reviews have mentioned the block setting as a negative.
-
July 12, 2012, 1:32 p.m. CST
Lordoflight: anyone who enjoys that film will have it to watch again and again for all time ...
by sauchieboy
... you're right to say it got some aspects of the comics right, but it didn't get everything right. This film seems to be concentrating more on the character of Dredd and the nature of Megacity One than Stallone did. Hopefully, it'll complement your appreciation of a film you already enjoy.

I don't think the reason the Stallone film was financially unsuccessful had anything to do with fidelity to the comics ...
by sauchieboy
... for a start, not THAT many folk read the comics. I think ONE of the reasons the film did not meet its makers' expectations was because they didn't know whether they were making a Terminator/Aliens-style action film for adults, or a TMNTurtles-style film for kids. That's the main thing I think this film has got right- it knows who it wants to go see it, and it seems to be getting the word out to that audience.

At least once that I know of. It was an early one prog 16 or so I think). Some Plastic got sprayed on his helmet and he got caught by two guys. They made him take his helmet off and the Picture tile had him face on, helmet off, with a big "censored" over his face. The reaction of his capteurs was that he was actually disfigured in some way. Obviously this idea was dropped pretty quick, 'cos it never came up again that I know of.
-
... the important thing- from a thematic point of view- is that neither the readers nor the other characters ever see his face. That's what makes him the faceless personification of the law, and what makes him so remote and intimidating as a character. Anderson provides the point of audience identification in the new film- we see Dredd through her fearful and awestruck eyes.
-
-I'm really glad to see Durham Red is still around, and kicking ass, in 2000AD!! Haven't read it in ten years mind. -Dredd has had his helmet removed a fair few times - we even saw his face, if I remember rightly, in the Necropolis prologue "Tale of the Dead Man". He also had his helmet removed after assasinating Chief Judge Griffin (it was Griffin) in the East Meg War story, and even had his face lifted to catch a bunch of crooks, when he did a tour of duty on the moon!! -This film sounds like a really good kickass flick, and it sounds like Bryan Singer's first foray into X-Men, in that the director took a few important things, and made them right, rather than trying to slapdash a lot of botched brilliant things. There's lots of time to make a decent sequel, the director has made a small, perfect flick. Only one thing: being that it is in a cityblock, do we see a real Blockwar? Oh, September, stop flirting and hurry up you bastard!!

Good reviews across the board, saying it's well-made, well written sci-fi? I almost feel... hopeful for mankind.

hahas, as someone who was really into the American version of the Dredd comics right before Stallone' s film was released
by SergeantStedenko
I remember first off being very underwhelmed by the casting of Stallone as Dredd. Like many others at the time I would have loved to have seen Clint Eastwood in the role. He could have done it then. He wasn't too old yet. When it actually came out I can't even remember if I saw it in the theater. I imagine that I must have because I was a huge Dredd fan. But, this kind of goes to show how disappointing I found the film. Stallone wasn't Dredd. He was Stallone in a Dredd costume. And I won't even mention Rob Schneider whose character was an abomination. Dredd does not need an unfunny sidekick as comic relief. Now, to your question (I apologize for the Harry-esque prologue about my personal relationship to Dredd), I do not believe that with Stallone in charge of this project that it would have been possible for the film to have been faithful to the source material. That said, if they had gone with Eastwood and kept the helmet on, lost the sidekick and made it a hard R like Robocop, yes, I do believe that it could have been a huge hit.
-
Even though it was a good film.
-
It came out the same day as Power Rangers & Apollo 13. Batman Forever came out 2 weeks before & Clueless & Species came out the week after. Pochantes was also playing, then.
-
I want to like this film but it sounds as if it's lacking satyre and is more of a violence fest. Good it's violent but it needs to be intelligent as well.

Lordoflight: I don't think the screenwriter of 28 Days Later and Never Let Me Go left his brain switched off writing Dredd ...
by sauchieboy
... every review I've read mentions what a clever conceit the drug slo-mo is and how well it works from both a narrative and a visual perspective. The parallels the film draws between MC1's social, political and economic conditions and our own current difficulties don't seem to be as broadly drawn as something like Robocop. In a 90 minute action film, I think you have to trust that anyone with the necessary intelligence can make those kind of connections without wasting time EXPLAINING everything and boring those who are only there for the explosions and splatter.

So you want a film that's just aimed at people who are just there for the explosions and splatter sauchie?
by LORDOFLIGHT
It's not a case of explaining everything. You can do an intelligent flick without explaining everything.

Robocop had some good satyre but it didn't have to explain everything.
by LORDOFLIGHT
There were things like tv adverts etc.

That's what cinema is about: depth and detail of image texture and the juxtaposition of shots to convey meaning. Dialogue and character-acting sits on top of that solid structural base and "Dredd" has all those things. How many R-rated films can you say that about?

WANNA SEE THIS CUZ OF THIRLBY AND HEADEY, EVEN THOUGH HEADEY DOES HAVE PU$$Y FACE MAKE UP ON
by Meadowe
well, she does!

this film's world sounds more bad@$$ than the 95 version, so I would have liked to see more of it; then again, hopefully they make it so exciting that i would want to be scared to see more of their mega city.

A low budget sci-fi movie that isn't awful or pretentious and doesn't crap on it's source material. Pay attention Scott & Lindelof.
-
They did a good job on Headey's makeup. Very realistic looking. The sunken aspect is often missing from other's works.
-
The thing that gives me most hope from Quints review is the word *fun* before the word *violent*. The trailer looked awfully po-faced, dreary and humorless. We all know how awesome uber violence is when paired up with sharp satire and a bit of dark humor - ROBOCOP, TOTAL RECALL and STARSHIP TROOPERS. The fact that Quint says the film is *fun* gives me far more hope for it than I have had before.
-
i FIND IT SO hilarious some people will never be pleased..Always Nit picking every lil thing..Stallones Dredd was DREADFUL..period! This Looks amazing and Urban Looks Great..CANT WAIT FOR THIS ONE!!
-
My point was that you can make an exciting, visceral film that displays intelligence without spelling everything out for the slow kids. If you think of a film like Clockwork Orange- which is clearly the work of highly intelligent and creative minds, and provokes serious thought- nothing anyone says or does in that film is beyond the comprehension of an eleven year old. Films are essentially what the viewer makes of them, and I'm sure many folk will view Kubrick's film and Dredd as straightforward narratives. My point was that folk like you and me- who want to read a little more into those films- will find plenty material to satisfy that desire amid the old ultraviolence and red vino.
-
from the sound of it this may be an unexpected treat. Just hope it ain't new Conan CGI type splatterfest.

thank you coolfan123, that looks fucking amazing
by where_are_quints_hobbit_set_reports
AND it's not as dreary and murky as the trailer was... in fact it's extremely sparkly. love the blood spilling over the widescreen borders. Horrific/lovely.
-
It appears somber and gloomy like too many run-of-the-mill action flicks nowadays. Looks Wiseman-esque in the trailers. I personally liked Schneider's comic relief yin to Stallone's ultra-serious yang and that giant hulking mecha droid was the stuff of nightmares. Between Maxmilian from the Black Hole and the Dredd robot a dude could really lose control of his bladder functions.

Have you tried to watch that horrible pos lately?

volllllume3 is right: I tried to re-watch Stallone's "Dread" last night and couldn't make it past 10 minutes...

Just an awful, garish mess.
