Mondo's Comic-Con Poster For THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Is Tremendously Awesome
Nordling here.
Oh, Mondo, you had me at THE...
Two new Mondo posters, both done by Jock, as announced by Badass Digest, will be making their debut at Comic-Con. The first (click to embiggen):
will be on sale at the Mondo booth #437 sometime tomorrow. Follow @MondoNews for details on that one. The second...

will be given away by Warner Brothers at a special screening of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (but not at Comic-Con, it'll be a sweepstakes screening to be done later on). No, I don't know when, or where, but that Villains poster is gorgeous regardless, and it'll probably cost a mint once it hits eBay.

that looks like some lame comic book cover from the 80s.
-
Ol' Bats has also apparently gotten ahold of Iron Man's reactor technology judging from the inverse pyramid chest thingy.
-
That's where Iron Man's triangle arc reactor went.
-
all the posters i've seen aren't any better than the fan art
-
Thank You! I've seen better by Mondo. Theses are pretty weak. I know AICN pretty much kisses their asses, as if everything they release is "cool". Just weak.
-
They Are screening this at comic con.

and that archiac, over-rendered 1982 crap.

by JackSlater4
Does that mean it is bullshit converted IMAX?
-
...ful! This guy can't draw to save his life. Go back to school. Or go to school for the first time. Really poor skills. Amateur hour.
-
you don't like the poster. it's work that someone did. you aren't buying it. you aren't forced to have it. what is it to you if you don't like it? why do you have to shit on it? why do you have to be such a dick about it? why do so many geeks have to be such pieces of shit? i am starting to feel like maybe you all deserved to be bullied growing up, cause you turned out to be such fucks.
-
when you put your work out there, you open yourself to scrutiny, good and bad. That said, most talkbackers are assholes.
-
Is that what its supposed to look like?
-
Having admitted the truth, it's also true that artists have always been subject to criticism. High art of Rembrandt and Picasso. Commercial art of Jack Kirby and Norman Rockwell.
-
most adults know better than to personally shit on people for the work they do. if you don't like something, you either say nothing or you simply say that you don't personally like it. what you don't do is start saying shit about the artist. it's called maturity. but i guess i can't expect mature behavior from people who still play with toys and argue over super hero movies.
-
....Is that they suck. I guess that makes me a piece of shit, but oh well.
-
how does that affect my enjoyment of the movie?
-
Mondo posters are hipster-douchebag bait.
-
yes, if you say that someone's artwork sucks, it makes you an asshole. if you say that they suck as an artist, it makes you an asshole. or it makes you a 12 year old who still thinks that they are defined by what they do and don't like but if you are older than 12, then you are a dick

You know, people are talking about "accountability" a lot these days.
by gotilk
And how a lot of this negative stuff will go away when people are forced to use their real names. Hmm. Fascinating. As if the "exposure" to the disapproving gaze of their peers will suddenly make them NOT be borderline aspergers in their insensitivity. Ever been to Facebook? Yeah... mostly real names. Almost always as a matter of fact. HA! I believe my case is closed. No further questions. .... And these posters look pretty good, really. I prefer them to the official art that's been released so far. Are they my favorite Mondo posters? Not by a long shot, but come ON. It is NOT bad work. You may not like the style, but the execution is fantastic.

You either DIE A HERO or live long enough to see yourself become the villain...
by paviod
Quote at the bottom of the poster. My assumption is that Bruce Wayne lives but Batman dies as a hero and symbol for Gotham. John Blake takes over the Batman costume in future series....
-
But I give credit where credits due. Some of them are indeed quite nice. But their entire sale strategy is pure fish bait. They found their audience, and the cater directly to them. Limit supply & create demand. This is the same crowd who buys 12 inch action figures, so they know the posters will get snatched right up by them.
-
and no I cannot do better but that's not the point; you said how great they are, and frankly, they aren't.
-
yeah, they suck.

Ok maybe not that bad but they are incredibly overrated and do seem to play into the collector mentality with the whole scarcity angle. I mean they are kind of cool posters but I think they are so overhyped on this site, that we are getting turned off to them.

Seriously, Mondo? You dropped the ball on this one? This is a huge movie with some cool stuff in it. Recycle those posters into toilet paper, please.
-

-
I don't see any Struzan posters yet. Of course the quality of their posters could get better in the future ....or worse...like anything else on the planet. If he does some kick ass work, then maybe they won't be overrated at that point but right now they are overrated and WAY overhyped by this site. They have something to do with the Alamo Drafthouse so maybe it's a business partnership with Harry...who knows.
-
...ly mediocre. Really. I really like some of Mondo's other posters (There Will Be Blood in particular), but these are crap. That being said, I can't wait to see TDKR on an actual, real IMAX screen. Thank you, Carnegie Science Center!
-
I don't see any posts where the talkbackers "shit on the artist." They just say things like, "the poster sucks" You seem to be putting your nose pretty high for someone who seems to regularly post here, and in a superhero-related talkback, no less. I guess the only bigger stereotype than negativity amongst the talkbackers is hypocritical douchery, and saying things like, "but i guess i can't expect mature behavior from people who still play with toys and argue over super hero movies" while posting on AICN, in a Batman talkback. So congratulations, you get the douche of the day award.
-
They put out some amateur shit now.
-

Seems like they either put in minimal effort like this or...
by jimmy_009
...they jack themselves off by cramming a thousand traced looking images on a poster. Most of the time the art doesn't in any way reflect the tone of the film, it's just 'retro' or stylized because. Stop Mondo.

If that's the case, then it makes you TWICE the asshole dick douchebag for calling people names who express their opinions.

If you've spent any time in the world of graphic design you'd know it's not clever, it's lazy. I've seen this dozens of times. Usually it's a bunch of leaves forming one big leaf. I've seen it with bats too. Go over to Design by Human's recent Dark Knight Rises contest and look at the entries... I bet half of them have Batman formed by little bats. Fucking uninspired. It wouldn't surprise me if it was done with a Photoshop brush either. If so it's like ten minute job. Blah.

because i am neither a child nor a man child. geeks want to be 12 for the rest of their lives. they think being a geek makes them open to the wonders of life. it doesn't. it closes them off. the sad part is that the adult in them wants to get out, so they start treating their toys with the kind of seriousness that adult concerns warrant. who gives a flying FUCK is catwoman doesn't look right? she's a cartoon. a fucking cartoon. she doesn't fucking MATTER. but, whatever. to each their own. if being a child forever makes geeks happy, them i don't begrudge them that. but if they are going to behave like children, the LEAST they could do is be WELL BEHAVED CHILDREN.

is like going to the circus or the zoo or the fair. it's 2 hours of fun. on the drive home i remember being a kid and playing with toys and reading comics. maybe i get on AICN and say that i liked the movie. but i don't get on AICN and talk about the movie like it's a discussion about abortion or gay rights or what to do about the war in Afghanistan.. i spent 10 fucking dollars on the movie. at worst, i wasted a couple hours and a little bit of money. at best, i got some laughs and thrills and enjoyed myself. that is the range of experiences watching a movie. especially a superhero movie. that's as much as it matters. no more and no less. Harry made AICN for people who love movies to share his love of movies with him and each other. talkback ruins AICN for people who love movies, because it's overrun with little pricks who think vomiting their every whining thought about everything is being critical. it's not critical. it's just being a bitch.

by jacking up the prices of their deliberately short-ended supply of their garbage. They might as well sell loaves of bread at 80% mark-up and claim that the crust is the next big art boom. Act now, loaves are limited. Actual character designs on the second are not bad but the posters in general are bordering on being complete shit. Hire Bruce Timm to make one, at least then it'd be visually appealing.

by Happyfat73
I guess the binary thought mode that applies to movies, also applies to posters - either it sucks, or it rules. There's no in between.

All I'm seeing here , with a few exceptions,v are a bunch of posers who can't articulate an opinion more discerning than "it sucks".

Well, it doesn't suck. It may not be the most amazing piece of art ever rendered, but it is far from suck. Why is it that whenever something is merely okay, that it is always rounded down to being the worst thing ever?

It's like Mondo shat in everyone's Weeties or something.
-
Did I miss something? I have no idea who he is.
-
I really really like their Hugo, Jurassic Park, Iron Giant and Bottle Rocket posters. That said, I hate their greytone with color splash posters (Inglorious Basterds, Avengers) as well as their minimalist or art deco posters (Last Picture Show, Hud, etc) as rarely do they match the subject matter
-
But I'm kind of mystified about the whole "mondo" allure. I've been on their site a few times and they always have a scarce few pieces of merchandise from obscure movies form the 70s-80s for about 400% of what they should cost. I guess there's a collector market out there but I've never been even moderately interested in any of their stuff...
-
Usually i love Mondo, but their recent crop have been very underwhelming. Hated the recent Game of Thrones posters.

The characters are quite Metal Gear Solid-ish in their art
by tomdolan04
I don't have a probably with the art per-se (like all fan art, some great some not so great), but I find the limited supply/demand aspect coupled with the pimping of them on select genre friendly websites such as AICN/Joblo/Darkhorizons et al very cynical.
We all gotta eat and you'll get people masturbating to the college student question of 'who are you to value art', but people paying over the odds for these deserve to be ripped from their cash.
-
As in, something that Ain't It Cool News promotes the shit out of in order to generate fan interest, when in actuality the product in question just isn't that great.
-
B-B-B-But dude. A good ish cover! Unlikeable as fuck...I mean 'real and gritty' characters! Horrible acting...I mean 'real and gritty' acting. Rip off...I mean homages to much better films! Guys in cheap gorilla costu...I mean creative use of costume design!
That movie had it all.
-
but the poster definitely sucks. Poor execution.
-
If somebody thinks it sucks, to them, it sucks. You don't get to say otherwise. So step off the soapbox unless you can articulate your OWN opinions better than that.

-
What gets old - for some of us - is the "anti-fanboy". Just as some are slavishly devoted to certain genres, or movie series, or characters, etc, there exists their oppposite number, for whom their "personal coolness" is demonstrated by how above it all they are, how unmoved they are by everything (and most especially by anything that does trigger fanboy appreciation or even the admiration of the general public), who can be counted on to theatrically stifle a yawn and to tell us that this sucks, that sucks, whatever you likes sucks, pretty much everything sucks. Saying that you don't like whatever doesn't put you in this category, by default. We all like some things, and dislike others. But a cursory look around this (and many other sites) will find examples of this attitude, in abundance.

antonphd: while I agree with you about nerds being an angry bunch who spew hatred over stupid kids comic book movies at the drop of a hat...
by Emperor_was_a_jerk
Criticizing a piece of art does have precedence. I am not sure if you know this but people have been criticizing art for some time now. They are called Art Critics. This poster is a piece of art. Just because no me here is going to pay for it doesn't mean it is beyonde criticism. Art critics review and criticize priceless pieces of art from world renowned artists and they will never own them. That said, I too am tired of nerds angrily criticizing everything just to be assholes about it. Especially when they are usually criticizing movies about superheroes or other stuff made for 12 year olds.
-
I just recently read a collected story where Jock did the artwork, might have been a Batman, maybe a Spidey I dunno, but the guy needs an issue or so for the viewer to appreciate how quietly awesome his stuff is. Come on, you're all bitching about a comic book artist designing a movie poster of a comic book superhero. It absolutely shows more creativity in the design than the released posters of the characters just standing around in fake Sin City rain. Second, the "writer" who reported the story at baddass digest wrote like 3 lines of text basically putting the posters out there and he actually has a tagline "about the author" talking about his "reputation as a loud, uncompromising and honest voice". Really? Wow, how uncompromisingly honest was that blurb? And finally, someone at AICN probably owns a share in Mondo. The entire concept is kind of a joke, who actually buys posters? 11 year olds and pathetic fat collectors that's who.
-
If so, its awesome! If not... I have to agree that it sucks egyptian wanger.

i also bet if you could see the original piece you'd be blown away by it, not to mention it's the coolest rendering of Bain I've yet to see and I hate Bain.

I am a fanboy, and it doesn't matter how "creative" somebody else "percieves" it to be...
by Jaka
....I. don't. like. it.
TELLING someone they're opinion is wrong on the internet is the biggest waste of time, possibly, EVER!
Explaining how much you like it, or why you like it, which may or may not lead to further discourse from those who don't like it and could possibly even change their minds, makes perfect sense. TELLING them they're opinion is wrong, not so much. It's their opinion, it can't be wrong. It's not information or facts that can be quoted, or verified. It's an opinion; it's theirs, they own it. It doesn't change because you say it's wrong.
-
Telling someone THEIR opinion is wrong, not they're.
Ugh.
-
I get the whole "these assholes do nothing but whine" - I've been here for years and it has ALWAYS been this way. You wanna see shit really flying? Wait until we get closer to the US PotUS election and the various tv coverages and how those talkbacks freakin blow up to thousands and thousands of posts of people not only attacking others opinions but non-stop attacking everything that doesn't spout the exact same "opinions" as they themselves spout. But what always irks me is the self-righteous, self-hating, and self-deluded asswipes who come on here and dismiss the entire AICN TB crew as "nerds" or "dorks" or "assholes buying toys and arguing over comic book movies". As if that was new...it's not. You guys are what is new...you are what has become more and more common on AICN. Except who is the real asshole here? The guy who says Mondo is a giant douchebag for creating the above posters or the guy who pretends he's not exactly what he denigrates? If you are on this site at all, you're a "nerd". If you are complaining about TB'ers on *any* level on this site, you obviously have been here a while so you have even LESS credit as your implied "outside observer" status begs to indicate. Meaning you have even less right to call anybody else a "nerd" when you so clearly come to this site more than enough to see the mindless vitriol...ala "NERD" Now, this doesn't mean highwaters, pocket protectors, and white tape on the black glasses...but let's not pretend that some of us are "more equal than others" when it comes to who is a nerd and who is not. If you're here and posting with your own account - you're a movie "nerd"/"geek"/"dork" Don't hide from it. Doing so makes whatever opinions you do give have hardly any weight. After all, how much meaning can one glean from someone who is not even aware of his or herself?
-
They're an offshoot of the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin aren't they? Hence the AICN lovin'.

I've liked some of the Disney stuff they've done in the past but now it's getting to be a churning factory of half-baked hipster-cum-geek collectable "art".

Combining that irritating style with the manufactured rareness of the pieces and the "watch our twitter stream or miss out" marketing makes me want to boycott anything they do.

Great, exciting stuff, but nothing about a standing ovation that I saw.
-
Today, there were hints that a Robin movie is in the works. What?
-
...I'm probably not going to because I'm lazy, but let's try a scattershot approach. Firstly to antonphd, I understand where you're coming from to a certain extent. Somebody else mentioned the "binary criticism" that tends to appear on AICN and, well, pretty much everywhere: either something rocks or it sucks. There's very little middle ground on anything. Chalk it up to laziness or just general antagonism, but more often than not it doesn't accurately reflect the quality of the work. So this isn't an excuse for the "This Mondo guy can't draw to save his life" buffoonery (which was an actual comment in case any of you defensive types want to check), because that shit isn't cool with me either. On the other hand, if you declare something "tremendously awesome," you're practically daring people to take a shit on it. And I don't necessarily disagree with that mentality either. If you don't like something, you shouldn't keep quiet just because it's by Mondo and it's already been established many a time by AICN that Mondo is "tremendously awesome." I do think that Mondo is pretty cool, and I like this poster (even though Batman's bat symbol does look strangely like an arc reactor), but come on. Final thought that I couldn't wedge into that paragraph: people are criticizing this poster because it's not SO great and they probably could have totally come up with the exact same idea if they took a Poster Design with Photoshop class down at the local community college if they thought anybody was actually interested. But, sadly, even better than average passes for mind-blowing these days when it comes to the crushing mediocrity of poster art, which is such a joke that it's barely considered an art. I can pretty much guarantee that anything Mondo makes is cooler than anything hanging on the wall at your local multiplex (even if those things are more "polished"). That may sound like faint praise, but don't underestimate the importance of earnestness and a modicum of expertise. I'm not telling you that you're an asshole and a nerd and you're not allowed to say things suck if you want, but before you get all worked up about what a poor excuse for a poster this is, consider the alternative.
