What, The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day worry?
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
Considering today is the first day of Comic-Con (preview night used to be a fun little precursor, but now it’s a full on day of the con) I figured what better way to celebrate that than with a pair of photographs of James T. Kirk and Spock flipping through Mad Magazine.
These shots stike some very specific nostalgia chords for me since I lucked into a stack of vintage Mad back issues as a kid right around the same time that it became a family event watching Star Trek: The Original Series as reruns aired every week.
So, since I’m apparently in control of The Matrix these photos exist. Check ‘em out!

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at quint@aintitcool.com.
In tomorrow’s pic’s experience there’s no such thing as luck.

"The Lighter Side of Vulcans"! They don't care whose toes they step on!
-
I love those MAD movie parodies!
-
I think. It's an issue 1. I don't think the MAD humour translates well over the pond.
-
I have a personal letter from Wiliiam Gaines on Mad letterhead. He signed it 'love and kisses, Bill'
-
Shat's laughing it up, while Nimoy's pondering humor. It is a difficult subject. It is NOT logical.
-
There is absolutely nothing to fap to in here.

Uh, Leonard? The cameras aren't rolling. You are allowed to smile.

the look on Nimoy's face. priceless. "They think this is funny?"
-
If I recall, in that parody, when Spock transported to the ship, he came out rearranged. "Captain," her said, "my face wants to sit down."

Two of my favorite fuckin' people in the whole wide world right there
by zillabeast
I don't care what they've said. What they've been called. All I know is that they've saved the world so many times it's become routine. All hail.

Awesome pic!

I'd really like to wake up one day and find some Prequel behind the scenes stuff up here. Even if it comes with a whole lot of snark.

Even more proof their "characters" are they're actual personalities

I think it was Kirk who gets rearranged by the transporter in the parody. There are Mad back issues available to read online - just not legally.
-
because it looks like Kirk and Spock reading MAD. The second one looks like Shatner and Nimoy posing for a photo op.
-
Maybe a real dedicated Trekker could tell you, but I bet even he'd have a hard time. That particular rocky location (probably near the famous Vasquez Rocks) was used in lots of episodes.

Spock was never on the planet. I'm such a nerd... :/

GREAT PIC!!!! Spock landed on the planet at the beginning of ARENA -

knowitallfromcali - you're not the only nerd here.

If memory serves me correctly, they first land (with a landing party, including Spock) at an outpost that was under attack, on some planet (say "X"). It was the superior powers that snatched Kirk and the Gorn commander and placed them on some other planet ("Y"), to go mono a mono. So, technically Spock was never with Kirk on the planet in which he fought the Gorn.

One of those photos appeared in Mad Magazine itself.

They were reading the parody of Star Trek. At least, that's how I remember it.

Not the Gorn episode but still the same location. Vasquez Rocks.

I went to my first Star Trek convention way back in 1977--I think it was in December. Gene Roddenberry was the featured speaker, and it was at this convention that he announced, in public for the first time, that there would be a Star Trek movie. Well, that brought the house down. But the highlight of the day was the ever popular Blooper Reel. The crowd demanded that it be shown three times. Great days for Star Trek fans who ate up all those reruns throughout the 1970s.
-
Curious, Captain. This nonsequiter series of images illicites an unusual grimace and halting vocalization in the human species. I find that to be most illogical.

I am going to guess it's the "Friday's Child" episode.
by Patrick Pettay
That is the one where Kirk, Spock and McCoy get involved in a bidding war with a Klingon with the natives of a planet who closely resemble feudal Knights. The wife of the King (called Teer) is played by Julie Newmar. She is massively pregnant and bitchy to everyone except McCoy who she takes a liking to after McCoy proves that while he is a doctor, his pimp hand is still strong. When the King is killed the Klingon backs the new regime who are out to kill the wife and her unborn child. Kirk and Spock fight off the war party with makeshift bow and arrows and other tricks while McCoy delivers the baby in a cave. Most of the outdoor scenes are filmed in a steep, rocky environment like what is in the background of the pics.

Captain, observe this painted image on the last page: once you fold it in, it becomes... a different image. Even the statement on the bottom of the page becomes another statement.

I'm guessing there's something Trek related in that particular issue and page.

As the true original, can you imagine how much fun it must be to just bust that persona out?
