UPDATE: MAN OF STEEL Might (Or Might Not) Be In IMAX 3D, Plus Here's A Vague Unofficial Synopsis!

UPDATE!
Just received an email from Warner Brothers and IMAX, stating the following:
Hi there!I wanted to let you know that IMAX had made an inputting error regarding Man of Steel on their site and the film is not being converted to 3D.
So there you have it. MAN OF STEEL will be in IMAX, but not IMAX 3D. Is it the Mighty Hand Of Nolan after all? Whoever's responsible, I'm thankful. I don't mind 3D, but I'm not the biggest fan of post-conversion. Good news for those who aren't fans of post-conversion!
UPDATE AGAIN!
As of right now, according to a source at WB, it has not been determined whether MAN OF STEEL will be in 3D or not. Decisions are being made on-high. I'd imagine that someone's looking at the numbers right now...
Nordling here.
Superman fans are anxiously awaiting San Diego Comic-Con, where more from Zack Snyder's Superman reboot will be revealed. But today, Warner Brothers let out a little bit of news for fans: even though Christopher Nolan, who is producting MAN OF STEEL, isn't the biggest fan of 3D, MAN OF STEEL will playing 2D, 3D, and 3D IMAX. Unlike Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, Snyder did not shoot MAN OF STEEL in the IMAX format, so this will be a conversion. Also, here's a hint of the storyline, possibly - this has been listed as an unofficial and unapproved synopsis by Warner Brothers - no mention of Zod or any other villain, but as appropriate for the character, the movie will be big in scope. An unofficial (according to WB) synopsis follows:
In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported years ago to Earth from Krypton, a highly advanced, distant planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question ‘Why am I here?’ Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark discovers having extraordinary abilities means making difficult decisions. When the world is in dire need of stability, an even greater threat emerges. Clark must become a Man of Steel, to protect the people he loves and shine as the world’s beacon of hope – Superman.
The IMAX release of MAN OF STEEL will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
MAN OF STEEL opens next June.

I wanna love it, I do... but I must see a trailer.

and I have low expectations for this movie. I hope I'm wrong.

shoot with IMAX cameras for real IMAX or don't bother at all

Aside from the almost-news of IMAX/3D, hasn't that exact synopsis been making the internet rounds for a while now?

Henry Cavill doesn't look 20-something. He looks like he is in his mid 30s. (Yes, I'm aware the dude is under 30 years old, but that doesn't mean he looks it).

he's almost been the biggest advocate for shooting with IMAX cameras...he's also not been a fan of 3D...hopefully he isn't giving up on shooting more movies with IMAX cameras

Super-CDOs! Zod is a Wall Street type.
-
Its Superman. Of course it's 3D IMAX, this is a buisness, like it or not, it makes money, someone goes to these showings, look to Avengers box office totals and complain. If you don't like it, don't pay the money, simple capitalist statement. With that said plenty will. I will, because it's Superman. ...although I'd prefer if it was shot in IMAX. And Nolan was directing.

Whew, I was gtetting worried. Now I KNOW it'll be awesome with CGI flying at me. Don't care if it has a story, do we?
by IronEagle74
Nah, didn't think so.
-
Young 20-something Clark Kent? That sounds like a) we're ejecting the entirety of the Donner-verse (for good or ill) which means "reboot" and b) we may get an origin again (at least as far as Fortress of Solitude -> Superman journey) from the original film. That's fine as far as it goes but... why? I thought the whole point of Superman Returns (even if folks didn't like it as much) was that, y'know, Superman was returning and then future films could move forward? Or is that too much to ask?
-
Which is just completely ARSE! 3D is Dead anyway. I think Christopher Nolan has the right idea!
-
I'm with you on that. I know they want to get away from the other films and start fresh but it's the Superman theme for fuck's sake. It goes beyond any series of films. It's as iconic and locked into the character as the S on his chest.
-
Yeah, we wrestle with problems like that every day.
-
Visually talented but amateur as a director.
-
I seem to recall something about a robot in a synopsis a while ago. Maybe its more AMAZO than Metallo.
-
What is it about the re-telling of an origin story that so pisses people off? And no, it's NOT "un-necessary", because thirteen years after it was last portrayed on television, and thirty five years after it was last portrayed on film, guess what? There are people who don't know. I know it's hard to think outside the bubble, but over the weekend, I asked three different friends of mine, all men in the their thirties, if they knew where the Gwen Stacy story was headed in upcoming Spider Man movies. One had never heard of Gwen Stacy, one said no idea where it was headed, and one said "she kills the Green Goblin, right?" So, there are people who don't know about Krypton. Or Jor-El and Lara. Or Jonathan and Martha. Or Smallville. So, sit back, take it, and enjoy the two thirds of this movie you feel are worthy of you.

Not sure how you convert to 15/70 from 4k digital (or 35mm)
by AlienFanatic
Sounds like they're not only limiting the frame to 1.44:1 to fit most Liemax screens, but then they're simply going to upscale the original print. You won't get any more pixels, but you'll get...what? A sharper image than if they'd done upconversion in the projector? I don't get it. I understand post-converted 3D, but I don't understand post-converted IMAX.
-
Anyone? Really hope to get a glimpse of Darkseid ... that's who we need in the sequel.
-
i agree that 3D conversion hat gotten quite acceptable. but anyone who doesn't see the tremendous difference between even a very good conversion and a movie that was shot in 3D, needs to get their eyes checked. you just can't compare the amazing 3D look of movies like PROMETHEUS or HUGO or even THE THREE MUSKETEERS (just talking about the 3D here, not the quality of the films) to almost-but-not-quite-right feeling you get from conversions.

by pr0g2west
As pointed out by David Caradine in Kill Bill vol. 2, Superman is superman. Clark Kent is the disguise...He shouldnt have to "become" superman. He is superman! He has to become Clark Kent to fit in with the world as he sees it.
-
Nope we are stuck with another origin story, retreading of Superman v Kryptonian/Superman Clone style villians but this time in 3D.....oooooohhh ahhhhhh. After 5 Modern films Superman has battled Luthor 4 times Kryptonians once (soon to be twice) Richard Pryor's SuperComputer Solar Powered Superman Clone After 80 years of comics to drawn upon one would think they could have spiced things up by now. Post Avengers there isn't any real reason Superman's more fantastic opponents can't be realized on film.
-
I really hope I'm wrong, because do we really need to go through how Superman became Superman again?!

that looked awesome in 3D, too.

Which really didn't get me that excited when I heard about it, this movie probably intigues me more than most. Then again, I am like one of seven people that enjoyed Snyder's work post 300... I don't know. I just like the idea of getting away from what the 70's/80's movies established in to something different. I haven't read a Superman comic since the Death and Return of so I'm not really "hip" (I think thats the term the kids use) to how he is handled now.
-
I forgot to mention Superman fighting himself in the junkyard. So in the films he either fights the schemes of Luthor or physically fights another Kryptonian(s) be it Zod and crew, himself or a clone.
-
I forgot the bit in 3 where he fights himself in the junkyard. So Superman on film either fights the machinations of Luthor or physically fights a Kryptonian(s) be it Zod and his crew, a clone or himself.

there...I said it

I thought the TB ate my post.
-
For me -- and I only speak for myself here -- Superman has been grounded, metaphorically, since Reeve. A good origin story, i.e. not rushed, probably takes a good 25 - 40 minutes or so in a film. So that's 1/6 to 1/3 of a 2h film (though, presumably, a Superman -- like an Avengers or Batman -- should be longer than 2h). So, each time you repeat it, you take away from potential other story. I don't mind origins, per se, but something like TASM seems unnecessary whereas Batman Begins seems fine (either due to length of time between, or stylistic differences, etc.). Your point is well-taken, re: Superman and the last time we got an origin, but it's entirely contrary to what the stated goal was for Superman Returns (again, whether people liked it or not). On top of that, Superman is, to put it mildly, the one of the least-constrained of any of the DC superheroes -- and as kaga has pointed out above, he's been hamstrung. Lex, Lex + Zod, not-Lex, Lex and Lex. all on Earth, with very, very few glimpses of Krypton or anything extraordinarily non-Earthy. The capability is there (see: Avengers, Green Lantern, etc.) for him to literally save Earth in a non small, non contained way... and we've been waiting a very, very long time to see that (and will potentially have to wait longer if this is a repeat-origin). But, as people say: let's get a trailer (or anything really) and we'll talk. I prefer to remain cautiously optismistic until it's time not to be so!

pr0g2west, Tarantino doesn't have a freaking clue who Superman is
by The Krypton Kid
At his core, Superman is Clark, the good-natured farmboy who was brought up by good Kansas parents with a strong moral core. Superman is the larger than life, superheroic extension of those values. Metropolis Clark Kent however is somewhat of a facade to deflect suspicion that he is Superman. Tarantino's cynical idea is as stupid and incorrect as Frank Miller's idea of Superman.

by Rupee88
If he has some killer actions scenes and story is serviceable, it could be lots of fun.
-
you're not wrong :) from IMDB: "Ultimately, the film would feature approximately 50 minutes of IMAX footage, while the rest was shot in a combination of 35mm and 70mm, as IMAX cameras proved to be too noisy for shooting the films dialogue scenes." but at least the parts that were shot in IMAX are going to look amazing on an IMAX screen. like with MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL

That's the rumour anyway...

@rupee88: Yes only "parts" of TDKR were shot in IMAX...the good parts
by cgih8r
the large action sequences are all shot in IMAX, like TDK and Mission Impossible 4 for that matter. So it can be said that the film is shot for IMAX. It's my understanding that most other films that go to IMAX like Prometheus are not actually filmed using the IMAX cameras and go under a conversion process but the difference is definitely noticeable.
-
I don't want to sit through another BORING superman movie... I just don't and there hasn't been anything exciting about Superman since Lois and Clark, which was like a Primetime Soap Opera with some superman Villan behind it... (Which as a teen I enjoyed somewhat) But the melodrama doesn't translate well onto the big screen, so let's have a little more action and a little less Emo Superman being depressed about his planet exploding...

I wonder if he tries to quit being Superman, or loses his powers
by Autodidact
That'll probably be the sequel. Here's a hint to all people trying to write heroes: Heroes don't quit. It seems like every second superhero movie is about them wanting to quit or retire. The last TDKR trailer to come out has Alfred and Lucius both urging Bruce to come out of retirement and retake the mantle of the Bat. This is totally out of character... nothing but death can keep Bruce out of that costume because it's the only thing that makes him feel alive/worthwhile.

Is it really film making when you have CGI artists make the film for you? Where's the passion of the story? where's the beef? It's chaotic eye candy for the sake of eye candy. Nothing wrong with liking it. I just don't.

I totally agree. Heroes quitting and losing of super powers (and regaining them back in time for the final third act) is now a cliché more associated with the movies than with the comics.

by baronweazle
Superman was raised as a human being by the Kent's and Clark Kent is without doubt his natural self. I think Tarantino should have used the exact same speech but use Batman as his example. With Batman the Bruce Wayne persona is definitely the fake one. Am very interested in this film though! Even though I'm one of those losers that actually loved Superman Returns.(and I will lament not hearing John Williams fantastic Superman score in this one.)

Snyder, IMO, is vastly overrated. His first two movies (DOTD & 300) were good, but since then, he's been mediocre at best, horrible at worst (Owls of Ga'Hoole? WTF?). He hasn't slipped down the proverbial rabbit hole as bad as Shyamalan, but he also hasn't really been inspiring much faith lately, at least from me, anyway. We'll see, but I'm just not very confident. Besides, Snyder seems to be as wrong a fit for the Superman character as Tarantino would be. Like I said, this will probably suck.

This is clearly the time to homage those masterpieces of the nineties that empathized gritty "realism" and "edginess". Just look at that symbol ...it screams "1998". Hollywood has finally realized that with cultural phenomenon such as LOST IN SPACE, SPAWN, GODZILLA, ALIEN RESURRECTION, THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU, and BARB WIRE, people want movies to be dark and "real". Bravo, Warner Bros., Nolan, Snyder, Goyer, Sony, Webb. You are visionaries. Its like being in the late nineties all over again. Only true artists can create such a feeling.

As much as I love the Williams theme and hope they use it in some respect...I wouldn't call the 70's movie the "original" - after all, Superman existed for decades before then in many iterations, both in comics and on screen. Mind you the Williams theme has become definitive for Superman - but I do hope they at least try some new material as well - just as long as they, as you said, at least put the Williams theme in the credits. Or they could work it subtly into the background, somehow.

..another boring origin story that reads EXACTLY like Superman 1/2. I've seen those ones already. Seen them a lot, actually. Why do I need to see it again? Pick up a comic book retards. Not every story they do is a reimagining of a superhero's origin. Hell, most non-superhero characters never have their backstory explained to us on screen anyway (just hinted at). Why can't we go that route with superheros? I wanna want to want this, but I just don't.
-
We dont need it. It's a waste. Frankly, I think Supes is less relevant in this day and age than Batman. Supes was more relevant than Bats in the Golden Age(and even Silver Age) but not now.
-
Shame his performance will be wasted in whats destined to be the "Death of Superman" until 2020.
-
yes Carradine's superman speech is lame and incorrect (and obviously way overrated)...glad someone else realizes this.
-
He seems to genuniely care about the source material and likes kickass geek action. Yes Sucker Punch was a horrible aberration but 300 and Watchmen worked....the latter about as good as it could. Let's just hope we finally get some superhero fights that are epic in scale. Avengers had a little of this but most of the other films they just stand there and punch each other like mere mortals. Matrix 3 was crappy but it did get the final battle between Neo and Smith. Something like this for Supes and Zod would work.
-
I really like Zack Snyder's films in general... although Sucker Punch was utter rubbish aimed at 16 year old gamer chicks and the ageing Matrix fans who want to finger them with their fingerless gloves. Why do we have to endure another Superman origin story? I know all this already and I really don't give a fucking shit. What I enjoyed with Superman Returns was that it was a sequel which continued in the spirit of the 70s/80s movies. I honestly thought it was a good film with real heart. I would have rather seen Zack continue the story than go back to the fucking beginnings YET AGAIN!!! The only real difference being that Superman now has no outside underpants.
-
Isn't part of the reason WB is doing this is to tell elements of the origin story that they will be losing to the estates of Siegel and Shuster?

...both here and elsewhere, but it's tough for me to get into this character. Being so (well, mostly) invincible, there's really no drama. Every story has to involve kryptonite in some way, and it just starts to feel redundant and "auto-pilot" after a point. This perfect being - vs. insecure teenager (Spider-Man) or a half-nutball vigilante (the pointy-eared guy with the cool car) - just doesn't seem to pack as much real tension or drama. There's just not much you can do with him, it seems. After that first Reeve movie, it just got silly (to me). And the recent Routh one was so limp. I've said it before...I simply don't think Superman belongs in this time. I'd love to see a retro-based approach, embracing the original era he came out of, but using modern movie-making to do something really stylish and, most of all, FUN (what a dour, droopy mess "Superman Returns" was...not once ounce of fun or joy). He's too goody-goody to realistic mesh in this twisted, ironic and jaded world. But stick him in the 40's, do some cool "Sky Captain" type of visual treatment (make those classic Max Fleischer shorts come to life, basically), and I think the "noble boy scout" thing plays much better. People will buy it, set then, and it won't seem so hokey or out-of-place. Just my 3¢.

Apparently, Nolan said that his only real involvement with this was pitching his brother's idea and choosing Snyder to direct. This will be Snyder's movie.
by hank henshaw
What I can't understand is, if Nolan is such a genius... why go for Zack Snyder? this movie will blow. I find it hard to believe that the Nolan brothers and Goyer actually came up with something that works for Superman. The fact that every time someone involved with the project opens their mouth, they say it is a dark and gritty take on the character in the same vein of Batman Begins, tells me all I need to know. Apparently WB learned nothing from Superman Returns. Next time, if there is a next time, pick some writer and director that is a good fit for Superman.

By the way the Kill Bill Superman speech is utter horse shit as it comes from the skewed perspective of the fucking villain you morons. Superman didn't grow up a god, he grew up a person first, Clark Kent. That's why he doesn't try and take over the world or place himself as a god in the world.
-
and I agree with everything lead_sharp said.
-
That's the rumor. He doesn't fly. He just "leaps" real far. ...like the Hulk in Ang Lee's HULK. Seriously. I shit you not. Why aren't more film bloggers posting this? He doesn't fly. ... Seriously.

The original comics just had him "leap". I could deal with it.
by whatevillurks
-
While technically true, that rings very CW to me.
-
Snyder is the only thing that worries me about this movie. Abrams would've made a great Superman Movie. I hope Snyder can prove that he's "grown up" with this movie since it's his first movie directing Oscar winners.
-
Thats what Kal-El is going to focus on in the movie ...and this is why DC fails miserably. Gee ..planet Krypton was doomed , parents shoved him in a rocket ship and sent him to Earth so he would be safe. .....there ...the whole question is solved. Its not your fault Kal-El ..you were an infant and had no say in the matter ...get over your abandonment issues and grow a pair.
-
Kryptonian Luthor's lensflare device of doom.
-
Who the fuck cares? Personally, I wouldn't mind if they made him less super in this film. Hell, the character originally could only leap tall buildings in a single bound. So, sorry if you were trying to rile us up. It didn't work with me, at least. I just want them to make a good movie. I don't give a fuck how much they mess with the character as long as it's a good watch.

The idiot trolls are out in full force, aren't they?
by Queefer Sutherland
Anybody already claiming this movie to be horrible or great is quite the dumbfuck. Unless you are psychic, and have watched the whole movie remotely. Pathetic bunch of idiots. I think the film has a lot of potential, and I'm excited about the approach they seem to be taking. I remain optimistic, but I'm not about to sit here and say it'll suck or it'll be brilliant. Only a turd-fucker does that.
-
DC movies since Superman 2 suck. Sorry, Nolan.

What does your talkback handle mean? If you don't mind. I have a hunch.
-
God no! It's really been done to death. Really. It's time for a new score.
-
I've read it nowhere? Either way, I'm more bothered that Amy Adams isn't gone raven-haired for the role...mostly cause I bet she'd look hot with black hair.
-
"John Williams or No Deal I mean it." No, please, tell me you're not going to threaten us like this. What will WB do without your $18.50??
-
Singer's Superman brought that theme back, and plot idea's (if not the comic tone) of Donner's films too. It didn't work. What was ok about that film was a retread, what was new was dour. This seems like a fresh start and approach and I'm all for it. Saying that if he flies near the end (and he will) and the theme bursts out I'll probably need to go to the toilet.
-
The nerd and the jock.

That was an awesome Superman.
-
Not a bad movie.

I hope the Kents keep him away from the Bible, or he's liable to turn into the leader of a crazy cult.

Dude...it is directed by Zack Snyder. That already seals the deal. It is gonna suck.

I found some stuff on the New 52 supes not flying, and I know Snyder is working with DC closely, but do you really think he'll use ALL aspects of it? I hope not! Although I've heard the new comics supes is arrogant and bitchy and Cavill is good at playing that.
-
Am I nitpicking or is there something to the fact they wrote "a" man of steel vs. "The" man of steel. I came to the comic world recently, is there more than one "Man of Steel?"

It's Carradine's characters take. Or even what he is saying to convince Uma that they are like Superman - on another level. But she has become a mother and doesn't want to be married to some bastard who thinks murder is fine (like she USED to) she wants her kids to have more human lives, so she kills him, the end. As for this move, the costume stinks worse than the new Spider-Man, and so does the idea of starting with another version of the origin, especially the way it's presented above.

Do we need to see another "incarnation" of General Zod, when there are so many other notable villians in Superman's rogue's gallery? This decision reeks of creativity being bankrupt, Zac. You're better than this. (Well, after Sucker Punch, I'm not so sure.)

Superman needs to be Superman from the beginning of this film. Anyone who doesn't "understand" who Superman is or where he came from or why he has all these powers or what his place is on this Earth can figure it the f--- out as they watch the story progress. That is, of course, assuming there is a story.

I'm more likely to see it in Imax. Granted, Imax 3D is generally pretty good, but given a choice I prefer to see the 2D version over the 3D one, especially when it comes to post-conversion 3D.

...an interesting, intelligent Zod, than fight a mindless marauding monster like Doomsday. We saw the Joker before the Dark Knight, didn't we? And I have absolutely no problem with another origin story. Yes, we all know his origins but a different take could be interesting if done well, particularly in light of the rumors of scenes of a war torn Krypton.
-
Or Toyman? Bah!
-
That's not the worst thing, but can we at least end up with a Superman who LIKES being Superman? Who maybe even enjoys flying around the city?
-
have never understood all of the hate...though I do wish Singer had stuck around to X3 first.
-
The ONE movie that could REALLY make the most of 3D - what with flying characters and all - and they decide it's not going to happen. Way to call it, WB.
-
If you want your film to look the absolute best in 3D, then use one of 3D cams James Cameron invented. Otherwise don't bother with a conversion. Saw Green Lantern last year and you could totally tell it wasn't shot with a 3D cam. Background stuff was in the foreground, foreground stuff was in the back, and the characters looked are cardboard cutouts amongst the CG environments. That's what post-conversion gets you - a shitty-looking movie.

Only movie I ever thought was improved by the addition of 3D was How to Train Your Dragon (Didn't see Avatar in 3D, but I heard it was an improvement there too). Every other movie, it just didn't add anything.
-
I am with Nolan. 3D is crap. IMAX is king. It has been three years since Avatar and still hasn't been another live action (or CG/live action mixed) movie that I felt 3D worked well or enhanced the experience.
-
I just hope they keep the John Williams theme. I love that theme. It just says SUPERMAN. I know 99.9% of you hate Superman Returns, but when the main theme hit, I teared up. Brandon R. did a perfect Supes/Clark Kent. He channeled the late great Chris Reeves well. Too bad they just rehashed the same tired old Lex Luthor real estate grab by genocide from Superman I.
-
"In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. " So we changed his costume to improve your ability to focus on his crotch.

@sambafreak13, Returns "fantastic"?! You must really like Singer for the X-Men movies and Usual Suspects.
by hank henshaw
Superman Returns got every single thing about Superman wrong, not just the costume. It was poorly cast, I don't care what people think about Routh he was just doing a not-that-great impersonation of Reeve's Superman, not truly playing the role. His Clark was worse. Lois and Lex Luthor, plain terrible. The script was a mess. The whole idea to making a sequel of sorts to a series of movies from 30 years ago, but only the first 2 (because those were good)... ill-conceived. WB got Singer to do this because he was a hot commodity after X2, not because he was the right man for the job. It didn't work out. I'm afraid it's the same story with Snyder, Nolan, Goyer.
-
...and the Fortress of Solitude was cool. Brando returning from the dead was cool. Supes holding up the car like from the comic was cool. The recycled plot and the super-kid was lame. Lois was lame. Perry White was lame. ("Truth, justice and all that other stuff." Ugh.) Overall, pretty lame. I don't hold out much hope Man of Steel will be any good. Shoot, they can't even get the suit right anymore...
-
Read "Superman Birthright" or watch the 90's animated series/justice league. His powers are great of course, but he can be killed by a missile or strong force other than kryptonite, he bleeds, can't go into space without a spacesuit (he breathes air after all). Stuff like this makes him more human and relatable..
-
I think I may have just been coming from a different perspective. As a kid, I was a HUGE fan of Superman II (must have watched that thing 100 times) and am of course familiar with the character, but honestly have never been a comic-book guy and therefore I prob don't have the depth and breadth of knowledge about the character that a lot of folks on this site do. For me, I just really enjoyed the movie start to finish. Yes, Lois wasn't that great but I loved Routh and Spacey and found the whole experience to be effective. Yes, it could have used more action but I REALLY dug all the character stuff and was ready for a Man of Steel directed by Singer, starring Routh, that would be a bit more baddass. So maybe I had different expectations, but I honestly VERY MUCH dug the film.
-
a creative writer can work miracles Superman's enemy in 2 wasn't Kryptonite, it was Lois's pussy, and he lost. There are ways to play this no one has thought of yet There is more in heaven and earth blah blah blah

Doomsday will be for the last Superman movie these guys make
by Queefer Sutherland
Or the last two. They could have the second Man of Steel end with Doomsday killing Superman. The third one can be his resurrection. But I hope they don't. Doomsday should be a one-movie character. The villain in the second film should be Mister Mxyzptlk. And Bat Mite should have been in The Dark Knight Rises. He's a lot more imposing than Bane.

Superman sucks
-
there's no anonymity in it. I know 'typist' doesn't really work either these days, but some kind of admin job would be truer to the nature of the character. He needs to feel unimportant in his 'real world' role, not like Lara friggin Croft.
-
The parents in this just seem like another version of the spider-man casting. The whole white-bread American thing is trite.
-
ok, got it...thanks for clearing that up. Anyone have good suggestions for sites where people can have an intelligent dialog about cool/geeky stuff without having to listen to mouth-breathers make really weak/offensive attempts at humor?
-
Singer sort of already did the death of Superman in SR.
-
But has chosen to be a beacon of hope and inspiration rather than a Saviour. Probably the right move.
-
Just answering why he doesn't fix all our problems. That includes our inability to keep villains incarcerated. Plus genre rules obviously apply, if he fixes the world or puts away Luthor forever its not going to make a great comic is it? But the answer as to why he should or should not fix all our problems/get too involved has been addressed, even in the movies (Quest For Peace).
-

sambafreak13, put the baby down. Step away from the baby...
by Queefer Sutherland
-
And The American Way! He is not from this planet and if he solves all our problems we will probably just rely on him to fix everything forever. It's up to us to fix these things, and we could if we wanted. He's just like the other inspirational figures you mentioned, but he handles the invading space aliens and stuff. Ultimately you can make the concept look silly by pointing out the limitations of the genre, yes.
-
Yes that's a new word, everyone write it down.
-
There are lots of creative ways to integrate an origin without telling a linear origin story. See Batman Begins.
-
Superman is meant to inspire, not solve every problem. Mankind would be doomed if he solved every single situation. If that happened, and this was a real situation in where Superman actually existed and does what you want him to do....how would we evolve as humans? All we would do is depend on him. In the end there would be no perfect solution for Superman...to help on some things or not help...that is a moral dilema that he does face with and some of the greater Superman stories actually touch upon. In fact the only redeeming quality of Superman 4: Quest for Peace is Christopher Reeve's speech at the end of the movie to the UN...sums it up right there. If you cant understand that, you are probably a person who just sits around a points fingers and blames everyone else for your problems instead of actually doing something about it yourself.
-
Superman's powers are excellent for catching bad guys, but I can't remember any of his powers that change the weather to affect the arable land in specific parts of the world. Creating food is not in his power spectrum.

Really?

by performingmonkey
Apparently Goyer had an idea that was the deal-breaker for Nolan getting oboard, but what the fuck IS that idea?
-
So shut up.
-
You just dismissed all the answers you need. What are you going to do next, tell us that Batman is really a rich man beating up people with mental problems? Wow, minds = blown, never heard that way of looking at it before.
-
My expectations are so low that I can't be disappointed when I go see this film. I'm not sure what they were thinking when they designed Supes suit. Every time I see it... I think about "Modern Problems." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V4Izjs1SOY
-
They rehash Zod? Seriously, Darkseid... Eradicator...Imperiex... "The Amazing Spider-Man" was so damn vanilla. The "Edge of Time" video game had a more compelling story... they should have adapted it. Andrew Garfield for Peter Parker. Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Miguel O'Hara. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0b-zoPa0UO4&feature=related
-
Does not fix the entire global climate, so he would have to make it rain in the Sahara quite a bit more than once to make it arable. And that's just one place on the globe. Human trafficking is another problem that would be hard to fix with his super powers. Superman is a force for order and good, but he doesn't make the laws of other countries, so trotting off to Afghanistan to beat up all the taliban for their treatment of women, or if you swing the other way, beat up the Americans for invading a country and killing its people is too morally ambiguous for Also, I'm pretty sure Supes has done more than catch bank robbers. The days when I read the comics, he was fighting super-villains/saving the earth from disasters. Though I haven't picked up a Superman comic in about 30 years, so maybe he's back to getting cats out of trees for all I know.
