So, According To Karl Urban, Benedict Cumberbatch In STAR TREK 2 Is Playing...

Nordling here.
Yep, Gary Mitchell, of "Where No Man Has Gone Before," if Karl Urban's interview with SFX is to be believed. Or, to quote him, "He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary." Sorry, Karl, you got to be more careful talking to press if you're in a J. J. Abrams movie.
That said, I think Mitchell's a perfect character for Cumberbatch to play, although I'm curious as to whether or not the movie will follow the same storyline as the episode. In "Where No Man Has Gone Before," Mitchell, an old friend of Kirk's, suddenly gets vast telepathic powers and begins to consider himself a god. Kirk is forced to dispatch his good friend to prevent Mitchell from taking over the Enterprise and presumably the galaxy.
Is this a smoke screen? I don't know. And really, does it matter? Why hide who Cumberbatch is playing unless it's an established character? If he was someone new, there wouldn't be all this runaround. So, even if he isn't playing Mitchell, he's playing someone we recognize. At one point I even supposed it was the Squire of Gothos, but if the photos we've seen are accurate, I don't remember the Squire needing to be in any fight scenes.
So - Cumberbatch isn't Khan, and of course all of this has to be taken with several grains of salt considering the misinformation that we've gotten so far. Honestly, I think Abrams would be better off not trying to keep things so close to the chest because when news does break it starts to be less a news moment and more of a "Gotcha Abrams!" moment. Still, it's good casting, and if true I can't wait to see those glittery eyes on Cumberbatch. As my friend Megan is so fond of saying (and about a million posters on Pinterest attest), he's quite dreamy.

Wasn't it "officially" announced that he was Kahn like a month or so ago. Then it was like "No, he's not Kahn." I don't buy this at all.
-
If I'm not mistaken, the comic books which immediately followed the first movie already did the "Nu-Trek" Gary Mitchell spin - and got the okay from Camp Abrams as to what they could and couldn't use. Either they've forgotten about it, or Urban is fooling around.

tommygavineg, maybe they were impressed by the comic's take on Mitchell, and thought he'd make a good villain for the sequel

one racist MIB3 review too many.
-
For the love of Ricardo Montalbán's gigantic pecs, guys... get it right.
-
Covered this so I imagined he wouldnt be the villain. But I could see it happening. I'm sure if he is in the sequel the story will be tweeked a little. Ones a comic the other a major motion picture.
-
Instead of new ones? I don't get it.
-
While I would much prefer using an entirely new villain, using someone like Gary Mitchell wouldn't bother me. His backstory wasn't so complex as Khan's was, so a single film could be used to update him. If he is indeed who Cumberbatch is playing, I'm all for it.
-
Orci apparently oversees storylines in the comic to make sure they don't screw with anything they're going to do in the movies. I think this is Urban just screwing with people.
-
I dont think it's true. A while ago someone from the Trek 2 crew said that the plot to the movie is hidden in one small panel of the first star trek comic that was released a year ago. So i bought it and still to this day im looking for the plot but Gary Mitchell was the entire plot of the comic! I hope for this to happen, but theres a chance it wont.
-

After years of keeping silent on Star Trek plot details, do you really think he just suddenly forgot and slipped up like this? No chance.
by lox4444
Added to which, why would the early focus have been on Latino actors during casting? And as everyone else has said, it's already been done in the comics.
-
but surely it would be more fun to introduce a new villain, someone unpredictable, someone who couldn't be second guessed someone who could smash the enterprise from top to toe and not care one bit? I like the unexpected angle of that type of approach. Someone who on the surface seems thoroughly unhinged with Kirk and Co and leads them to fight back with gusto. There are normally some vague connections to the bad guy via some slight back history story to one of the enterprise gang that sort of spoils the element of surprise. I'd like total surprise.
-
Alice Eve is playing Elizabeth Dehner? Works for me

OK, an ACTOR, sitting in a PREPARED interview (not an unguarded moment) lets something "slip". Not buying it.

Sorry, I didn't read your post until I wrote mine. I agree with you that a new villain would work better. There are an awful lot of characters to choose from in the Trek universe so recalling one for the new Trek film seems like a logical choice. However, it could be said that it also shows a weakness for not showing any spark of originality with the introduction of someone different. More often any new villain introduced for one film does tend to be a one trick pony and doesn't quite live up to expectations leading to a re-think for any further sequels. It can't be easy choosing just which is the correct way to go.

Yeah, I can't wait for the weird-looking and -acting bloke to start looking and acting all weird before **and** after Weird Shit happens to him, so you can't tell when he's **supposed** to be looking and acting weird. Nu Trek: This isn't your dad's Star Trek. (smashes your dad's Star Trek toys together into "interesting" new shapes instead of making new toys to play with)
-
He'll be playing a 23rd century descendant of his character from 'Kidulthood'. He'll have a bit of a 'gangsta' attitude and will eventually be shivved in the kidney by Angry Spock.
-
Khan never made sense...then again. nothing on screen in the JJ trek made sense.... how large is that ship? which scene?. How do you kill a Crazed telekentic Ego driven Maniac.... even obi wan knows you take him to a volcano planet and drop him into lava.... but i guess they'll have to change the planets name, since Delta Vega is now Hoth. See what happens when you go back in time via a black hole... Anyhow.. will Hot lips do a Shower scene? or will that be a Spock thing?

Boborci does the IDW Trek comics, they did Gary Mitchell as the first arc. Urban was screwing around.
by Al
It's either Khan (for which I would trust Trekmovie sources) or a new character. No Gary Mitchell. Check out vol. 1 of Star Trek ongoing from IDW comics for that. Boborci says it's supposed to lead up to the movie and not contradict it (he's more into sharing continuity with spin-off stuff than previous Trek administrations.) So unless they're planning to raise Gary Mitchell from the dead (actually not out of the realm of possibility for the character) Urban just said some gibberish to throw people off.
-
Before Simon Pegg has to yell at us again. Also, I'd like to see new villains instead of rehashed old ones. I just don't see the appeal of doing a story that's already there.
-
...numerous AICNers demonstrate their staggering inability to spell a four letter name correctly, i.e. 'Khan'. Seriously, people, how fucking difficult can it be?
-
so, yeah, nope. move along.

I agree with everything you said! I would much prefer a new villain, one no one has seen before. I think using a villain fans are familiar with would mostly be a fan service. It'd basically be the writers screaming, "See? We're fans too!" I don't see how any interesting story arc could be created from recycling old villains, but Gary Mitchell is interesting enough that if he was redone, I think it'd work.
-
Worst villain name ever!!!

Why does everyone assume Mitchell will be a villain in this reality?
by Smartacus
He was a good friend of Kirk's before he got all those fancy powers. Without them he'd probably just be another character in the story. Who knows?
-
While I knew instantly what you meant, I can't help but thank you for making me picture Raul Julia toking up some medicinal herb in his trailer on the set of Street Fighter. In full costume no less. Considering his health issues at the time, it totally makes sense too.
-
The villain's name is Gary? That's just... Gary?
-
...this will do nicely! Maybe they will introduce Mitchell as a crew member at the beginning of the film. Perhaps the Enterprise is being sent on a mission that requires an officer with expertise in a particular field and Kirk remembers his friend Gary Mitchell and arranges for him to come aboard. Then in the second act you can have the incident that turns Mitchell into the crazy man-god we know he becomes. Though I highly doubt they will keep the "universal barrier" element. It will probably be something else that causes him to change. Much prefer this than the idea of doing Khan again.
-
But who can refuse the Cumberbatch? But Mitchell always looked like he could have been one of Kirk's buddys, and I'd get that from Stan and Pine, but not so much from Cumberbatch and Pine--at least not right off the bat. Eager to see how they do this. I'm so glad he's not Khan!

They did it up nice in Early Classic Trek. Looks like something Mitt Romney and his Five Draft-age Sons would wear in the Smoking Room after a tough day on the Back Nine. JJ Trek's uniforms? Trek Deux: The Wrath Of Gary? Nope!

in the AbramsVerse. It goes down similarly, except Spock and not Dehner that weakens Mitchell, who then asks Kirk to kill him. This is probably too small a story, although not too small a character for a film. I could see a large threat to the federation, which Kirk is sent to investigate, being defeated by the mutated Mitchell, who then goes too far and has to be taken down by Kirk. Kind of plays out like the Dark Knight thou with the Harvey Dent storyline.

Hey-ho.
-
The plot of the first film was designed to re-introduce the characters in a way that allowed for new stories (but still using identifiable characters--like Pike for instance). Would it be logical to re-introduce a character that preceeded the new timeline (like Khan)? But Sybok can coexist in this new universe, and--the important point--it makes the plot revolve around FAMILY. That corny theme lies at the heart of Abrams' work, and allows for a cameo by Nimoy. Hey, boborci--come online (we know you're out there) and say it aint so.

Mitchell and Khan are both in Star Trek 2? I dunno...I only ever watch the films. The T.V. series ( all variations) bored me to exhaustion. I honestly could not find a way in to enjoy them.

The IDW tie in comics saw Mitchell die, pretty horrifically too when a boulder got tossed on his body.

by wcolbert
been a while, at any rate. Must not have had a great impact. At any rate I'm sure it's misinformation. But who knows. Who cares. The real question is...where's my Shatner cameo? Brand new universe - no reason an older version of Kirk cant meet up with the younger version a la Spock. No, Pine doesnt look like Shatner - but then Quinto does not at all look like Nimoy, hard as they tried...and it still worked (though I admit the whole movie I was thinking "yeah, but I wish the original cast could be younger again so they could keep m aking movies instead of having new guys trying to fill their shoes"... Personally I'm of the opinion that the original cast did what they did, leave it be - pursue different timelines, crews, etc, just dont play the guys we've known and loved for 45 years.
-
Oy vey!
-
He will be played be Danny Dyer and he will be renamed `Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaant`.
-
Only just realised you had already flagged Sybok. Agree with you. No indication that Ben Cross is back as Sarek, though. But would he be needed? Maybe not. I do think that "family" rears its sacchrine head in just about every tentpole movie these days! And would be really surprised if they did not have a big, gloopy dollop of "family" in this movie (just as the theme of Kirk and Spock working out their daddy issues was central to the previous movie). So would not be at all surprised if it was Sybok. Could Benedicio del Toro (who was apparently primed for the villian before Cumberbatch stepped in) have played Sybok? Sure, why not?
-
He was a loner kid on the range, and then a captain immediately.
-
STAR TREK: OF GODS AND MEN. Not OF MEN AND GODS.
-
Who's to say it WASN'T intended to be "Khan" when they first came up with the treatment or even all the way to the first couple of drafts? del Toro passes on the role, Antonio Bandaras was busy, the other Spanish/Mexican actors just aren't a big enough box office draw, the guys in market research get online and see that the word on the street is, those "Star Trek" nerds they courted with the last one are all giving a WRATH OF KHAN reboot idea the big, fat, fudge-smeared finger, so the writers do a quickie find-and-replace on the script and "Khan Noonian Singh" becomes "Gary Mitchell", while the "Genesis Device" becomes "crazy psychic disco eyeball shit". </p><p> More to the point, though, WHO FUCKING CARES?!? Sure, we dodge a hardcore reboot bullet if it's not "Khan", but does anyone truly win here? I mean, aside from everybody involved in STAR TREK 2 -- those fuckers are getting PAID and LAID.

And have the planet "Eden" "inside" the great barrier on the edge of the Galaxy. (They could say "how can there be a planet inside the barrier?) Have it that it was Mitchell, after the "fatal" crushing, fleeing to the world for blah blah blah, and that he could not leave the world and therefore called out across the galaxy and made mental contact with Sybok. The movie should have also referenced the "space hippies", saying that Sybok was hardly the first to seek "Eden", and that great, but broken minds have often sought out the mythical world in search of peace. Bam! Way better Star Trek V. I should have been in Hollywood to fix the script.
-
If Abrams is going the lazy route and basically making big-screen remakes of 60's episodes, then this isn't the ship I signed on to serve. Sure, it'll be fun and look pretty but I want NEW VOYAGES, not retreads of old plots and characters. expecting far more from the second bad Robot Trek than rehashing very, very old ground like this. leave that to the excellent IDW comics where it belongs. If this is what we have to look forward top, as cool as it will look and obviously with tweaks to make it slightly left of centre, then I'd rather go back to TNG era and give that the finish it deserved before heading off 50-100 years into the future of the Federation.

by Triple_J_72

And why is that a bad thing? The movies are 2+ hours. An epi of old Trek was less than an hour, even with less commercials back then. They can totally change the plot due to this being in an alt universe. They can also expand the story arc and characterization. They can save the original stuff for a new TV series. Oh, and on the subject of the alt universe. If Spock tries to save Vulcan and or reset the time-line using the sling shot around the sun bit, he will end up in that universes future or past, not the Prime one. Even if He had red matter left, who's to say the black hole is not just gonna send him to another different uni. Imagine his suprise ending up in the Mirror Universe.

It's not as good as traditional Trek, but what is? As long as they aren't trying to re-do Khan, as previously rumoured, then I'm cool with this. In fact, as long as they stay away from Khan, I'll actually defend this movie as I do the first JJTrek. It's not the greatest Trek film, but it's certainly leaps and bounds better than STIII, STV, or Nemeshit. And, boborci, I'm sure you don't care, but I'll take back every single bad thing I've said about this project if there's no Khan. My frustration and disappointment stemmed primarily on that rumour, so if it's not true, very cool. I'll support ST2012 if that's the case!
