Meet the OmniCorp Corporation (And The New ED-209)!

Nordling here.
Thanks to Bleeding Cool for the info.
Looks like the ROBOCOP viral marketing has swung into full gear, with an OmniCorp promotional video showing off our old friend ED-209 (with a new paint job) and a new mech, the XT-908, an aerial drone. And of course, coming soon, the RC-2000 - wonder what that could be?
Jose Padilha's reboot of ROBOCOP opens next year. Until then, feel free to check out OmniCorp. I'm sure we'll get even more information in the coming months.

Why is this happening? The original is perfect. Get some new ideas Hollywood!

I'll never be so close again.

That is some hilariously outdated ''futuristic'' design for the graphic presentation here. Sharp edges! Rotating logo! Best viewed in Netscape Navigator 4.0 at 800x600 or greater!

Just like Total Recall, this will be a scene-by-scene remake of the original, not a 're-imagining'
by Turd_Is_Floating_Underneath_The_Gravy
The only real difference will be a massively reduced level of violence.
-
This, Total Recall and Starship Troopers all getting remade. Someone upstairs seriously has a problem with him for some reason.
-
Sick of this shit now. It was 'Total Recall' last week, now this. No signs of any reimagining here - they're using the same logos, same designs, same consumer-centric approach. Hollywood has made a mistake... now it's time to erase this mistake.

the great thing about the old robo design was that it was simple, practical, and wasn't made to 'ooh and awe' at...

They took a very utilitarian approach to the robotic designs in Robocop. This movie looks like it's trying to make everything into a Lexus. A dark grey Robo with red lights all over?

The sequels were appalling. And though RoboCop is a true classic, there's a lot of potential for a great movie. I don't give a shit if it's a remake. As long as it's a good movie.
-
...is a very good director, mainly gritty and violent documentaries and a couple of actioners. If he can apply that to Robocop this could be a winner. Love it that the classic ED-209 is in this.
-
I'm actually OK with sequels. Just not remakes. And not prequels, either.
-
I get leaving out Yutani from Weyland-Yutani Corp in Prometheus, but why change Robocop's makers to something that sound even more generic?

commercial is so real.
-
There were two things that impressed me about this. First off, the ED209 still had the same basic shape, but new look, that's alright. Secondly, is the satirical element to this ad. It's not as wacky or as deep as the original Verhoeven classic, but at least we know it's there. Then again, it could be complete coincidence and they don't get any of the irony here. Also, the OCP (or OmniCorp) logo is the same. That's pretty cool.

"The ED209 Design has always been a ripoff of the Valkyrie transformable plane from Macross and Robotech fame." Wonder why I never made that connection before? But alas american audiences rather have talking animals and fairy tale bullshit in their animate films!

Now,first off,I've always been a huge fan of the original. It's a perfect movie for me. The sequels? Whoa. Not too crazy about those. Funny thing is,for the longest time,I was totally 100% against remakes, esp horror/sci-fi,but after seeing some good examples over the years where I was surprised,DOTD remake for example,my views have lightened up a bit. I was really excited when they announced Daron Aaronofsky was going to be doing this, but this was like right before mgm had there financial problems. I was hoping too see more metaphysical/spiritual aspects, for example, near death experiences and the afterlife,it's intriguing. I was glad when they did say they were still going forward with it. I'm glad it's Padhila doing it. I'm only vaugley familiar with his work, but from what I've read so far,I think he's a great pick. I def think this is a story/series with near limitless direction(s) to where they can go with it. So I'm very much behind this. My love for the original will always be there and nothing can take away from that, but I like the direction I see this going in. Familiar, but refreshing. Not that total recall remake, looks like shit. In part cause it has a hack director behind it,but it doesn't seem like it's trying to be all that different. Only faintly. I mean, the mars story element is gone, and it looks like a half assed syfy channel made for tv deal, which is trying to be deeper than it is. The what is real tagline for example. Perhaps if they had gotten someone better for it and gave it a different feel,I'd feel different about it. I must say,why didn't they just get Paul Verhoeven back for this one? I'd live to see him give it another go. As some previous poster said, someone "upstairs" seems to have it in for him. As for the starship troopers remake, well,I do think it's too soon for a remake,I don't see the need for it,I could be pleasantly surprised,I mean hey,you don't know how it's going to turn out until you start to get a better idea of what it will be,the original is fine as is,but,if it's more like the book, could be interesting, but I'm not holding my breath for it.
-
If anyone else remembers the early fake promo/viral ad for Elysium from last year, very similar sort of vibe. I'm not saying the ripped that off for this, moreso Blomkamp was def influenced by the likes of Robocop,Starship Troopers, probably Total Recall, that sort of social commentary/satirical sci fi,so yeah.
-
You also know you'll be seeing this, fucks.

...was gonna say, "I'll buy that for a dollar," but that one get's thrown around a little liberally. Robocop IS a necessary remake. Verhoven's tone is not for everyone, but the commentary is ripe and essential. As long as this is not too close in execution (storywise, not ED-209's design), I welcome it. Plus, it sounds like the director has the good's, although I can't seem to shake Elite Squad from my Netflix queue.

Sorry, someone had to say it.
-
Just because ED-209 shares certain design aesthetics with the Macross Valkyries does not make it a "rip-off". There is nothing blatantly stolen from Shoji Kawamori's designs. Inspired, perhaps for practical reasons, but nothing beyond a general shape outline. There is more to a design than a silhouette.

because it will be made for the sole purpose of making money, which means it will cater to people who are retarded. That's why. It has nothing to do with the actual violence, it has to do with catering to the mouth breathers.
-
Although, I've really tired of remakes these past couple years. As for this viral promo vid, it doesn't do anything for me. It actually seems like a well made fan video. Sorry, but just being honest. Also, all this pre-release world building for just about every new genre film is getting old, and IMO hurts the experience of seeing a film with a fresh set of eyes. It is bad enough that trailers give away the whole damn plot to most films nowadays, but then we have to get some fake commercial for some fake corporation from the film shoved in our face. Oh, and then there are the ever increasing prequel comics, prequel books, prequel/sidequel videogames, and other tie-in merchandise we have to get oftentimes to just understand the overall plot or to get proper character development and world building data that isn't in the actual film but fucking should be. Not only that, they want us to tweet and facebook about the film too. Go to the website they say. Blah blah blah. Show me a good movie. That is all I care about. If I like it, I'll buy the Blu-ray and watch some of the special features on the disc, if there are any included. Then maybe I'll tweet about it, that is if I wasted time on sites like twitter or facefucker, I've only got so much time and I need it to fart around here in the talkbacks. I think all this transmedia stuff is largely responsible for the overhype that results in so much disappointment with new films these days. Why were many of us so damn disappointed with Guy Pearce's old man Weyland in Prometheus? Sure the makeup wasn't the greatest, but it was mainly because we had something to compare it against. We had that TED speech of a normal looking Guy Pearce playing a middle aged Weyland. To me, that TED speech, while cool on its own, actually hurt the overall impression of Weyland in Prometheus. Also, did the viral video of Noomi Rapace's Shaw pitching to Weyland Industries about an interstellar mission to find our creators really help promote the film all that well? Did the David viral do much really? To me, no, all those viral videos did was to take away our chance of getting properly introduced to these characters in context within the film. This RoboCop viral is just the same kind of thing. Oh whoopdee doo, it has ED209 in it. ED looks basically the same as he did in the original. They have the same Omni Consumer Products logo, and a POV shot of some surgeons working on Murphy after he gets shot up, just like the original used POV brilliantly to efficiently go from Murphy in intensive care to his first steps as RoboCop. Before all that though, they've already spilled the beans on one of the new robots that RoboCop will probably battle in the film, which is that aerial military drone. So I'm supposed to get all excited for this film just because they have ED209 looking the same and for some hints at a sleeker looking RoboCop chasis? It not only doesn't interest me, it doesn't do anything really. This viral video doesn't titillate, engage, challenge, excite, tease nor inform us of much of anything about this remake beyond the fact that they are not being very bold about their design choices. Basically all I can infer from this viral is that the RoboCop remake will likely be another lazy uninspired and slick but soulless note for note rehash of the original. Even the Total Recall remake trailer showed some minor flair for new designs and larger story/setting changes in certain areas compared to the original TR.

by Queefer Sutherland
What a bunch of dick-breathed losers! You bitch about things looking the same, just as you'd bitch about them changing things. You're so fucking tragic with your girly mewling, as if some big crime is being done to you. A movie is being remade, dumbasses. If you can't handle that, go home and curl up with your beloved original and hide in the dark. This big scary world is too much for you, and we're tired of you shitting your pants over every fucking bit of change in your lame fanboy world. Go pound some nails into a baseball bat, wrap it tightly in razor wire and a little barbed wire, cover it in KY Jelly and shove it far up your asses.
-
I mean compared with that tank... he probably won't be chasing Murphy through narrow corridors or stairwells. And they put an alien queen head on him? Does that mean robo will have a power loader in the showdown?
-
The original will still be a classic but i might check it out.
-
No, not William Randolph Hurst. This time it's a bearded, overweight sci-fi director who wears plaid shirts. He takes credit for lots of other peoples work and talent and then creates crap in his later life. Nah, who'd believe that.

Don't take me too seriously. I'm just bringing out Mr. Hyde. The shit I spew needs to be read with a bit of tongue in the cheek. I like to set the place on fire if I can. That being said, the dweebs who can't stand change DO bug the shit out of me. Still, really, I don't need a breather. I'm fine.

Remember that Aronofsky was attached to this some time ago...
by Johannes Kääpä
And Padilha's also a great film maker so I'm not too worried about this at all. There seems to genuine interest to make this right. I'm also curious as to who will be scoring this as Poledouris's score to the original was so memorable. Maybe Clint Mansell already started working on ideas when Aronofsky was still attached?
-
Robotic Cop - a terrible, fascist idea, is what you should have taken away from it. That's why it was so brutal. At least I thought so. You can take away the violence, if you want to make a generic Sci-fi superhero movie, but they already did that with Robocop 3. This still could be interesting (inspired choice for a director.) Also, I think my childhood may blur my view of 80's pictures. My GF was born in 90 and can't stand to watch any real 80s movies, they look "primitive" to her. Either fucking CGI fucked up a whole generation or I view my 80s movies through rose tinted glasses. Probably both. Either way, only a remake will make young people see the awesomeness of a few properties, so I don't mind this one. (The bland Total Recall remake however can go fuck itself.)

The original ED-209 had formidable capability, but no way could it have vaporized an M-1 tank so easily. If it can do that, how the devil can Robocop fight the thing? Robocop will have to be amped up as well. More 'splosions' can't make up for a good story, if that is what they're doing. If.

He's the fucking director of this one. If you've seen the Elite Squad films, you know this ain't going to go wrong.
-
And less gore and swearing. This one is safe enough for Hollywood to rip off because kids today won't remember the original. Sure, they may have seen Robocop the series but this will be new to them. The actual concept of man merged with machine is an interesting one, but sadly I doubt that will be fully explored in this film. Don't expect the director to deliver based on previous projects, as it has "new movie franchise' written all over it and the suits will have more control over this. The original was never meant to appeal to kids, but since the crap sequel, they've tried their hardest to sell it to all ages. The hope is that this new remake will erase the memory of the original.

Intrigued by Kinnaman and Padilha, and would watch Gary Odman read a phonebook but borderline livid that they are tinkering with iconic and perfect Robocop suit and that the new ED 209 looks like something from Metal Gear Solid series...

Fassbender, Cillian Murphy or even Jonathan Rhys Meyers would have been unique choices. Just thankful Shia LeBoeuf nor Zac Efron was casted. The original ROBOCOP was developed from an unused JUDGE DREDD script
by Monroville
"The character of RoboCop itself was inspired by British comic book hero Judge Dredd[3] as well as the Marvel Comics superhero Rom. A ROM comic book appears on screen during the film's convenience store robbery. Another ROM comic appears in a flashback of Murphy's son. Although both Neumeier and Verhoeven have declared themselves staunchly on the political left, Neumeier recalls on the audio commentary to Starship Troopers that many of his leftist friends perceived RoboCop as a fascist movie. On the 20th Anniversary DVD, producer Jon Davison referred to the film's message as "fascism for liberals" - a politically liberal film done in the most violent way possible." I'm still on the fence about this remake, and the trailer doesn't improve anything. The concept art looks alright, but did they have to use Sy-Fy's narrator? That guy's voice is like audio valium.

... it'll be the Prometheus syndrome where it's like, you know, they shoot it halfway in mind that there will be a somewhat *light* R-rated cut on blu-ray later on while still keeping the actual cut they present to the MPAA very PG-13... but then, damn, the MPAA tells them the cut they've delivered is R-rated. The powers that be stew on this, and with time against them, they're unable to re-submit a new PG-13 cut (which is the only way to get a new rating with the MPAA, you have to go back to the drawing board and resubmit from scratch) so they just go, "Fuck it, fine, whatever... it's R." Only it's not R, it's a PG-13 cut that the MPAA said is R. Audiences are fucked because they're going to be watching a PG-13 movie masquerading as an R-rated movie... but the studio gets to score a temporary fan-win in the "See? We filmed a R-rated movie, fanboys! We did proud!" until people actually see it and see how lame it is.

by Charlie
-
RoboCop (1987), Total Recall (1990), and Starship Troopers (1997) all have some running themes about fascism and societal controls. But, because of the extreme nature of the topics in RoboCop and Troopers, he uses satirical humor to soften the blow so to speak at the same time hold up extreme right-wing concepts for ridicule. And let's be honest... these remakes simply don't get it or don't care. After all, the originals were coming just after the Reagan and Bush era. So, the political theology he imbedded was particular to him and the times. Powerful stuff.

Cause, you know, the ultra violence of shooting / metling drug addicts would be to much for a R rated film these days.

hoping the ed-209 weapons test footage is pretend-corporate-video and no indication of the cgi from the movie

Robocop knows Kung Fu

That dark-gray/black screen right at the top, the gray color, etc.. Minus the legs and mini-guns, it looked like a microphone with arms and legs. Did the Macross Valkyrie look like a microphone too?
-
Acutally, this design looked just fine. The film might be crap, and if it is rated PG-13 count me out!
-
Robocop is getting the battlestar galactica treatment. At least the original Ed-209 -looked- imposing, this one looks more like a giant airfix kit.
-
"where human resources meet robotic engineering" Ha. "Human resources." Good one. I'll have to wait for the reviews before deciding whether to see this.
-
I mean, that's the kind of technology they'll have in the year 2000, right..? Oh, wait - this ISN'T 1988 and we're NOT discussing the imminent release of Robocop 2. Shhhit, thought I'd gone back in time for a moment there; a time where I was highly anticipating the sequel to the greatest pulp-action film ever made. F*ck this movie. Make something original.
