PACIFIC RIM's Comic Con poster is such a tease!
Hey folks, Harry here... I haven't seen this up, but it just popped into my email, so I figure you good folks would be anxious for a look. Yeah, this is a big flick. Can't wait for COMIC CON to get laid on its ass by PACIFIC RIM. This is the first truly giant Guillermo Del Toro movie. Everything leading up to this had Guillermo fighting with his budgets. Here... he's putting on screen exactly what he's been dreaming of - and it will floor folks. So giddy for this movie...

I love giant robots who fight monsters!! I grew up watching Johnny Socko and his Giant Robot and also Ultraman
by ray a
If this movie is reminiscent of those old Japanese TV series in a good way then I'm will be tickled pink!

Part of walking on the floor is the reveal of such things. I like surprises. I'm staying away. PS Guillermo's US movies have all sucked so far. He's overrated.

Ain't it that cooler news or what?

So did he steal his people in a giant robot idea from Eddie Murphy's "Meet Dave"?
by Doctor_Nefario
-
is he the one who fought the giant catfish (among others)?? If so I used to watch that show religiously as a kid. Always thought he looked like a giant Rocketman, then again maybe I just have my Japanese monster movies mixed up.
-
You had me at Guillermo Del Toro. This movie has a good chance of kicking ass.
-
don't look like the ones in Sky Captain or Iron Giant. Those are too retro.

But that ain't a bad thing...... Mass Effect 3 still awaits me, hesitant as I may be

Pacific Rim-Job was SO the way to go w/ your post . . .
-
You know why I love Del Toro? He and I love the exact same stuff. As a child growing up in the Boston area, I was obsessed with Grimm's Fairy Tales, comic books, mythology and Uncle Dale's Creature Double Feature at noon on channel 56 (my kid is stunned there was a time where there were less than 10 channels you could get, and cable was a distant dream). If I was lucky on that last one, I got some Hammer goodness, but there was nothing wrong with watching Godzilla use the Kasumigaseki Building as an enema. Clearly, Del Toro loves these types of things too. My other big love, solidified by my dragging my parents to Mr. Big's Toyland every birthday, was Force Five on channel 25 every afternoon. There was nothing cooler than giant robots piloted by people, and now it is clear he is right there with me on that one too! I recall seeing a live action/cg trailer for a Gaiking movie on here a few years back, and being bummed when that never materialized. This takes the sting off.

What's the obsession with GDT? He's made 1 good movie.
by A_J_Pennypacker
I am not a GDT hater, I love his designs but Pan's was his only great movie. Hellboy 1 was decent and Hellboy 2 was mediocre like the rest of his films. I really hope Pacific Rim is a great movie and paves the way for more original big budget movies in the future. I just don't get the obsession.

Then again, the movie is probably influenced by some of them so in that case it fits. But if it was meant to look photorealistic, then it's a bit of a let down...

This sounds more and more like Red Steel robot wrestling, only with bigger robots. Kinda dull and repetative. Let's hope.
-
however, I bet that he is a technical wizard on set. I bet he knows his stuff when it comes to the latest technology and the demands that come with using it. I'm sure that he does his homework and researches his films with a pinpoint detail. I'm not sure though that this hard work really translates onto the screen in the best way. Maybe its me. I find his movie's hard to engage with.
-
GDT always has at least some parts of each of his films that are truly memorable - having free reign and dealing with a subject matter that has been a lifelong passion of his? This could be wholly epic! Cannot wait!!
-
1. You're right! Can't believe they ripped off the idea of an immense iron suit and lots of people piloting it. Total ripoff! 2. Yeah, WAY too much CGI in this. Why not do it for real, and actually make a giant pilotable robot. Hollywood's gotten so lazy.

-
Maybe it will spur that Monsterpocalypse adaptation along.
-
Which could make for some very fluid and cool choreography. I think Del Toro is going for articulate, very acrobatic robots, judging by the design in the poster. I suspect there are many various mechs. Imagine the Asuka vs MPE's in End of Evangelion and I think that's the kind of thing we will see in Pacific Rim. "Bland design" and Del Toro are phrases which have never appeared together and I have every confidence he'll give some aesthetics as he always does.

It truly does seem like zombie hordes and sparkly vampires could end up being brushed aside by the pop culture zeitgeist for giant monsters, big ass mecha, and dinosaurs on the rampage in the coming decade. Ah, who am I kidding? I'm sure the same old same old will prevail (more Batman, Avengers, Spiderman, Twilight, and endless zombies and young adult novel obsession). Oh well, at least we are getting some great looking and different genre films next year with Pacific Rim, Elysium, Oblivion, new Mad Max, and of course The Hobbit. 2012 hasn't really seemed to live up to the fabled "return of the summer of 1982" that everyone was hoping for. More like a rehash of 2008's summer movie slate really.

Personally the only film of his I didn't like all that much was Hellboy. This is because I think he made the mistake of taking what should have been more of an Indiana Jones type adventure character (as in Raiders Indy, not Crystal Skull Indy), and threw in an annoying sidekick/audience POV character. Also, the Hellboy movie seemed overly lit, and just didn't have the mood of the comic. Some of the makeup effects were really good though (Abe Sapien, and Ron Perlman as Hellboy was fun). I also thought Pan's Labyrinth, while a good film, was way overrated. By the time I got around to seeing it, I was expecting to have some sort of spiritual epiphany upon seeing it due to the massive critical praise and hype that film was getting at the time. Overall though, I like del Toro's work. Cronos, Mimic, The Devil's Backbone, Blade II, and Pan's Labyrinthe were all solid. I also enjoyed last summer's Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, which he produced. I think he will do something fun with this one. I'm also glad we are getting both Pacific Rim and The Hobbit now, instead of just del Toro making The Hobbit and Peter Jackson producing.

I'm all for painted posters, but if I didn't know better I would think upon seeing this that this was a poster for some cartoon film...
by Johannes Kääpä
Because that's what it looks like to me. If it was an actual painted poster, they could have made it look less cartoony while still being a painted poster. And why wouldn't a teaser poster of a huge ass robot look as photoreal as possible if that's what they're going to look like in the film?
-
July 7, 2012, 5:23 p.m. CST
because it's a POSTER... not a still. Look at the first Star wars posters.
by Farrokh
Did they look photoreal? They had the most realistic effects ever at that point, yet they went for a painted poster. And when I say 'painted' I'm including digital paintings aswell. Which is what this poster is.
-
... having attended the World Premiere of PACIFIC RIM last night, one inescapable thought crossed my mind during the movie. 10 to 1…. I believe Guillermo Del Toro gives rim jobs better than any man alive... PACIFIC RIM is the tongue, mouth, fingers and lips of a lover. The Audience is the asshole. Watch your audience. This is where Guillermo Del Toro goes down on the audience. It starts with long licks with a nose bump on the mud button slowly. He smiles as he does this… Watching the audience begin to squirm, then he takes the audiences’ ass in his mouth and just licks it like crazy, the audience is ready, on that precipice, then calm. He backs off… long licks again, brings in a finger to massage a bit, licks from the bottom to the top… The audience is cooing… He has them, they want release. He acts like he’s going to give it to you, takes you right to the edge, the audiences’ backs arched, ready to cum…. Backs off pinching the nipples just so, his head bobbing up to say
-
WOW! Now that was cool. Awesome!
-
Because if he is, that's fucking awesome

Nice to see someone is putting up cash for the financing, but this has US market bomb on it. -
Kind of an archetype by now, so del Toro isn't really "swiping" anything from anybody. This poster brings to mind the "Gladiator Wall" illustration done by Jacen Burrows for the "Transmetropolitan" comic series. Complete with the flying birds. Or the God Soldiers from "Nausicaa."

we've been hearing that phrase "This movie is Guillermo del Toro putting exactly what he wants on screen, and not being limited in his vision!" or something similar for years. To the point where some form of that statement seems to come up for every single film he makes now. I guess Hellboy 2 wasn't his "true vision on screen."
-
...to keep GDT away from Hellboy forever. He didn't get the character or the universe of the comics AT ALL.

yes if Pacific Rim is a sizeable hit i think whoever owns ATMOM (universal?) might give him his shot. the similar Prometheus is doing pretty well for an R rated SF horror (coming up to 300m and will probably total out somewhere between $320-350m) so i could see a studio being ok with putting up to $150m max into an R rated ATMOM (although ideally theyd want PG13) i guess it all depends on PRs box office - if it does well or hits Iron Man big theres a good chance we may get Mountains for 2014 or 2015 : http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LbjVY1QR5DE/TZvoYqsdFYI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/22DqR55LcuQ/s1600/mountains5.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw3tuiND_xk

On the one hand, I really wanted to see it in the same way that I would like to eat a large order of McDonald’s fries, but on the other hand I had reason to believe (i.e. the script that was available online) that GDT was going to screw up the Lovecraft story, which would ultimately have been a bad thing, even if the movie was entertaining. I’d rather keep the integrity of the Novella intact and just not have a movie. This movie I am looking forward to, as it will probably be well-executed fun that is not screwing up any beloved source material.
