I get bugged when "mainstream" Christians attack Mormons, or any other non-mainstream sect for having "crazy" beliefs.
by Tarijeno
Mainstream Christianity is pretty goddamn kooky from an outsider's perspective. It's about the vengeful, hate-filled, invisible God of the old testament getting busy with a virgin woman (in all likelihood a teenager at the time), and fathering a flesh & blood kid who could multiply matter, walk on water, resurrect dead people, and take upon himself the collective sins of mankind all at once, as a means to salvation. Mormons are crazy, but all this stuff up here is totally sane and sensible?

ccchhhrrriiisssmredux - Not so fast-- it's a rerun from 2005 with new footage to include Mormons. I guess Tne Book of Mormon on Broadway is also anti-Romney? please...
by Michael Lunney
And when you say * I can't wait for Obama to be voted out in November -- even if it means a Mormon. * That makes it sound as if you are anti-Mormonism. Not trying to pick a fight- juat sayin' Mitt Romney's presidential bid has generated unprecedented interest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, prompting the media to dub this the "Mormon moment." This week, the church will open up on network television's biggest stage about the subject of heaven. The church dispatched Elder William R. Walker, a general authority who oversees the temple department, to New York City for a historic sit-down interview with Barbara Walters near the Manhattan Temple last month. The interview will be part of a two-hour special titled "Heaven: Where is it? How do we get there?" that will air on ABC stations throughout the country Friday night at 8 p.m. MDT. The "Heaven" special originally aired back in December 2005 and featured interviews with religious leaders from virtually all of the leading world religions. But the LDS Church was not among those featured. With nine out of 10 Americans claiming to believe in heaven, the show was one of the most-watched programs in the history of network television. "We felt the program was so good and so strong we wanted to rerun it," Walters said. "And with Gov. Romney running for president, we felt it was very important to include the Mormon point of view this time." Elder Walker definitely delivered the Mormon point of view in a wide-ranging exchange with Walters that covered everything from what goes on in Mormon temples to the practice of baptizing for the dead to the concept of eternal marriage. The interview was groundbreaking and showcases the Mormon faith to millions of Americans through a mainstream television program. It also marks the first time that Walters has interviewed a Mormon about Mormonism. ccchhhrrriiisssmredux - Not so fast-- it's a rerun from 2005 with new footage to include Mormons. When the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced the nation's latest national employment figures Friday, the Obama administration stressed that people should not "read too much" into the data. Mitt Romney's campaign pounced, and flagged the fact that the White House has repeated that same line nearly every month since November 2009. See below for the roundup of articles from WhiteHouse.gov that Romney's campaign posted on its site. In many of the posts, the authors for the administration do acknowledge that they repeat themselves: June 2012: "Therefore, it is important not to read too much into any one monthly report and it is informative to consider each report in the context of other data that are becoming available." (LINK: http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2012/07/06/employment-situation-june) May 2012: "Therefore, it is important not to read too much into any one monthly report and it is helpful to consider each report in the context of other data that are becoming available." Obama probably keeps saying that because it's not a good idea to read too much into a single monthly report. It's pretty much what all the economists say and tell him to say. Don't be too alarmed if all the prior presidents said the exactly the same thing when the monthly reports emerged.

But, who's going to talk about Obama's political ads then Romney's political ads? This is NEWS, people! Christ, now I'm going to have to wait until next year to watch it all on THE NEWSROOM...

Funny thing about most organizaed religions or organizations for that matter
by Paul
Is you can find all sorts of skeletons in their closets, some are real and some made up by people who have left the organization. Heck I've heard tons of stuff about the democratic party and its members. If you really want to know about an organization you should go to the source rather then looking to individuals who ether left or were kicked out of said organization and spread lies or even take a truth and twist it until it appears a lot stranger then it really is because they are angry. Heres a few links for those who are interested. in knowing more about Mormonism (which I am one) http://mormon.org/ http://www.lds.org/?lang=eng Feel free to check these out or not, I don't want to shove religion on anyone if your not interested, I just wanted to make sure that things are balanced in this talkback. Funny thing about the anti stuff, it only increases membershp, because people start to get curious about it all and start investigating at the source. The Book of Mormon play isn't really anti, but its a little crass from what I've heard about the church but as I've mentioned before its caused a lot of people to want to talk to the missionaries.
-
Good job, mrlongbaugh. Forty-one months isn't "one month" and the unemployment numbers have been dismal since this man-boy was elected. And Hercules. Ronald Reagan didn't have to make excuses for his monthly jobs reports. The economic conditions he inherited from Jimmy Carter were this bad, but with inflation. Yet by this point in Reagan's first term, unemployment was about 7 percent, and the US ecomony was creating close to a million jobs a month, not a paltry 80,000. Elections do matter.

God (who looks a lot like Anthony Hopkins) will decend on his spaceship from the Planet Kolob with his sons Thor and Loki...ehmmm...I mean Jesus and Lucifer. Mormons will then become The New Gods who will terra-form other planets in the galaxy. "I am a Morman/and I believe......"

BTW- who ever said i was religious? in ur utter bigoted ignorance, u have, again, totally missed my point(s). i'll explain this one for free. whether or not IM religious doesnt matter because its YOUR hate filled, blind bigotry TO religion is what im pointing out. u are another prime example of the *tolerant left* LOL. and u keep giving bigoted example after example. like i said before, people like u are EXACTLY what u rail against. projection and hypocrisy is ur type of peoples stock in trade. sad, sad, sad.

I'm bored at this point. Rather than joining a discussion poking fun at Mormons, you went full-tilt tinfoil hat, and took to your fringe-right soapbox like a well-trained monkey...

by obijuanmartinez
You yourself, preacher, I defy you to believe in the god you predicate to me - you must fail because you cannot demonstrate him to me, because it is not in you to define him to me, because consequently you do not understand him - because as of the moment you do not understand him, you can no longer furnish me any reasonable argument concerning him, and because, in sum, anything beyond the limits and grasp of the human mind is either illusion or futility; and because your god having to be one or the other of the two, in the first instance I should be mad to believe in him, in the second a fool. My friend, prove to me that matter is inert and I will grant you a creator, prove to me that Nature does not suffice to herself and I’ll let you imagine her ruled by a higher force; until then, expect nothing from me, I bow to evidence only, and evidence I perceive only through my senses: my belief goes no farther than they, beyond that point my faith collapses.

pity me?.....pity ME????? u are EXACTLY what is wrong in America. fuckers like u are what is rotting America from within. i mean, just READ ur last 5 posts, u hate filled bigot. u are so totally lost in ur blind hatred of something u obviously dont (or wont) understand, its utter folly to the very concept of rationality. u do the actual rational atheist/agnostics a severe disservice by ur willful and extreme hate filled mindset. i honestly wonder how u go through life without huge therapy bills and getting ur ass handed to u on a weekly (daily??) basis. no wonder ur so hate filled and must vent on the internet, thats all u have left. so sad. get a puppy. BTW- oh yea, FUCK YOU :)

@jay: Yup. It's educated folks like me, and our fancy book learnin' that keeps your idyllic "Mayberry of the Mind" from surfacing. You know...
by obijuanmartinez
...that world where women, homosexuals, Jews, uppity blacks & sundry minorities know their place, white males are ascendant, and the CHRIST is STILL in Christmas - where Rush, Beck & O'Reilly program you it ought to be!

We're all rational, but we all do laugh at the infantile mindset that allows one to wallow through life believing in completely-unsubstantiated, mythical characters, cribbed from much older sects...
-
I need never fear anything on two legs handing me my ass on a weekly (or daily) basis: I have +10 years of Tien Shan Pai, Krav Maga & Kenjutsu to draw on, and I've run in two half-marathons (training for a 3rd in September) this year, so sadly, I am a somewhat robust physical specimen, dear laddie!

keep the bigotry flowing, little man. apparently u love to stoke hate among people to make urself feel better...
by jay2517
...ur a sad fuck. plus, ur no more *educated* or *rational* than ur typical white supremist or black panther member. so, again, FUCK YOU. BTW- u can add words like Kung Pao Chicken or General Tso Pork to ur awesome *who gives a shit fighting skillz*. they dont mean shit. cowards, such as u, only mention bullshit like that because, like i said, u get ur ass handed to u on a regular (or used to) basis. ive handled so called *skilled* fighters like u before and laughed afterward. ALL TALK. but, be *internet tough* all u want. i dont care. if it makes u feel better, have at it. now, go train some more. u need it, uve been getting ur ass handed to u for a few days now...

...and I'm having fun again dancing with you, point for point. I will have to lead off by disagreeing with your earlier (unfortunately incorrect) assessment of my education. Alas, I hold two Masters' degrees (MA in Education & an MBA). And while I understand someone of your stunted cultural pedigree likely has first-hand experience evaluating the intellectual acumen of white supremacists, I would have to guess you haven't spent enough time in the company of (m)any Black Panthers (much less black folks in general) to adequately render an evaluation of their mental faculties. Your declaration of my "internet toughness" is a bizarrely apparent, textbook case of projection, as YOU, dear lad, seem to be the only person beating their chest (though again, it seems unlikely to me you've ever faced a skilled Israeli-trained fighter in whatever backwater you inhabit; more likely, you've seen variations of "Rex Kwon-do" than Krav Maga). Again, I am merely responding to your points. By explaining my background in various internal / external martial arts forms, I felt I was covering one of your indictments. At NO point did I make a statement on what a bad-ass I am; I simply stated that having spent over a decade immersed in 3 distinct and variegated martial arts styles, I needn't fear "having my ass handed to me" by anything walking on two legs, which happens to be true. As to having my ass handed to me these past few days, I'd hardly qualify your middle-school level, special olympian feats of writing worthy of even an ass-licking...I daresay your lack of simple grammar would make even Harry Knowles cringe! Perhaps you and your sister can talk it over in the back of the pickup tonight over a couple cans of Four Loko (following what was doubtless a full day of home-schooling the kids on the inadequacies of evolution and climate change vis-a-vis the teachings of the Old Testament...) Gratias ago vos!

ur a dumb fuck coward that has to take his frustrations out in internet forums. u are true to form of the typical internet fukwad- projection- check supposed enhanced intellect- check supposed and name dropped *badassery*- check inferred inbreeding of opponent- check bigotry of supposed opponents faith- check ridiculing of opponents supposed children- check inferred diminished intellect of opponent because of typing skills- check etc. etc. etc. again, u are a sad little fucker. hope ur life gets better...

@jay: You've yet to article an cohesive point, my child...
by obijuanmartinez
I'll attempt to phrase this as monsyllabically as possible so it sinks in (dare I hope - REGISTERS) Walking around (essentially) saying "I WIN, I WIN! NEENER, NEENER!" is a debate paradigm favored by the elementary school-set, and won't net you much out in the "big people" world. Your argument is further underscored by elementary school-level articulation & grammar I would remind you that you appointed yourself (unbidden) the savior of those poor, hapless Mormons, but it seems you've gotten your temple garment in somewhat of a twist, and have yet to make a relevant point on why delusional folks with invisible friends somehow rate RESPECT on an (ostensibly) even intellectual playing field. Would be eager to hear you articulate an argument (or whatever passes for one for someone of your meager capabilities) that addresses this very point... Oh, and - please do yourself a favor and learn the difference between the words "infer" and "imply"

...just because u dont like it, doesnt make it any less true. everything i have posted is fact. the fact that u keep trying to defend the indefensible is FUN to read though, if not getting a bit boring. BTW- when have i said i was a *savior* to just Mormonism? oh yea, i DIDNT. yet another glaring example of ur awesome *debating* skills. when losing in every facet, just start making up shit and attribute it to the opposition. *sigh*, i really DO hope ur life gets better. maybe get a kitten instead of a puppy? BTW2- FUCK YOU :)

@jay: What color is the sky in your world? The Fox News effect of spewing silliness doesn't make it any less true...
by obijuanmartinez
You've "dismantled" nothing, but have failed to even attempt to rebut a single one of the statements on Mormonism I made earlier in the thread - e.g. posthumous baptism of Holocaust victims, racists who refused blacks that right to be priests in their cult, a figurehead (Joseph Smith) who had a criminal record before turning his eye toward becoming a cult-leader (the L. Ron Hubbard of his day). Beyond that, I've attempted to understand why making fun of religions / religious institutions / those who claim to have "faith" in a god constitutes "bigotry", yet you'll not answer even that simplest of queries. There is not a shred of credible archaeological / historical evidence that substantiates Jesus' supposed existence - no contemporary historical writings from that region of the Middle East; it's kind of like opening a 19th century American History book and not finding Abraham Lincoln. The dearth of evidence is there for those who don't have their ears & eyes plugged to what can be proven, and that which is merely conjecture. People who claim absolute belief in something they don't absolutely and implicitly understand are equal parts naive & delusional. I need not accord them even a measure of respect: Intellectually, they haven't let go of the Easter Bunny & Santa Claus yet. The Bible is a collection of non-contemporaneously-written hearsay, plagiarized mainly from Hebrew scripture (Newsflash: The supposed Jesus wasn't christian; he was a jew). The story of virgin birth is yet another plagiarism, cribbed from older sources (Mithra, Krishna, Horus Remus/Romulus, Hercules). Oddly, you can't seem to muster anything more lucid than "BTW2 - FUCK YOU :)", whatever that means. Perhaps I'll ask my 10 year-old niece, though you don't seem to be operating at even her level...
