Here's The Poster To OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL!
Nordling here.
I haven't heard much about Sam Raimi's Oz movie - I know that James Franco and Mila Kunis are in it, I know it's a prequel-of-sorts to the events in the original WIZARD OF OZ, and I know it's about how the Wizard came to be in Oz. I'm glad I don't know much and I'm curious to see what Raimi's done with it. But today the teaser poster has arrived, and I must say it's lovely. Here it is in all its glory (click to enlarge):
OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL comes out next March.

What happened to that JACK THE GIANT KILLER movie?
by CHRISTIAN_BALE_TRASHED_MY_LIGHTS
I've heard hilariously bad things about it, and want to see if it's really as terrible as rumours suggest. Has it been pulled completely?

Is this another movie about weird guys walking through the forest?

...reboot, remake, re-imagining, adaptation, rewrite, update, origin story, retelling, relaunch, based on a video game, based on a cartoon, based on a TV show, based on a board game, based on a board game about a TV show that was a remake of a rebooted cartoon about a video game, based on a true story, inspired by a true story, ripped from the headlines, etc. :) I figure there are no more than 40-45 original ideas or properties out there, total. Everything else just springboards off them in some way another (pick one of the above).
-
cue the font is all wrong, e.t.c... in 3 ...2 ...1 ...
-
Makes a change from the usual composited shit we see.
-
is also in it. She plays one of the three witches with Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz.
-
Well okay then, I guess I'll be watching this.
-
I totally forgotten about that one, I was trying to remember if it was even ever released..
-
Although, spider man trilogy, visionary? I liked them, well the first 2,yeah,they sure they want to be reminding everyone of the badness of the 3rd one? Shouldn't it be Evil Dead trilogy? Also,at one point, wasn't Robert Downey Jr supposed to be playing the the wizard?
-
It would have been out this month, originally. But the studio decided that they didn't want it out so close to The Dark Knight Rises and moved the release date to March 2013. This usually means more than they say it means as you may know already. There's supposed to be a new trailer attached to The Hobbit.

Only in this movie, Oz will look like a pedophile, the Cowardly Lion will be played by Helena Bonham Carter, and everyone (even the kids) will wear heavy eyeshadow

"... and the visionary director of the SPIDERMAN trilogy. Yea yea, we know, that by definition has to include SPIDERMAN 3, but c'mon. Two outta three ain't bad, right?"

I thought that was brilliant casting. Franco not so much.

Am I the only one who thinks that looks like The Shire????
by Turd Furgeson
If it was just a picture without words or the balloon, I would've thought PJ released a still of the Shire from The Hobbit..
-
Why is it already there?
-
I bet you they have a relationship
-
I like that better Oz: The great and Powerful reminds me of Paul Blart: Mall Cop or Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star
-
Uhhhh I like Sam Raimi as much as the next guy....but "Visionary Director" of the Spider-man trilogy? I really wouldn't ever want to include Spider-Man 3 and visionary in a scentence unless it includes losing your vision to eye gougingly stupid scenes..... Cool poster though!

there's a big difference in a visionary director and one who gets lucky

Now that the new SPIDEY movie is out, Raimi probably seems like a visionary in comparison.

I don't remember any of them mentioning who built the road. I did say that in Wicked though.

From the visionary director of the 'Spider-Man' trilogy...
by buggerbugger
...comes another attempt at an ongoing series that we will reboot the fuck out of after two or three movies.

at CinemaCon - looked cheesy
-
Does it have anything to do with the dark secrets of his missing parents?
-
I was literally in my shower this very morning, and a thought came to my mind, 'I wonder when they're gonna start promoting the new Oz movie'. I get to work, and bam, there's the first poster. Looking forward to it
-
..I always thought the entire point of the events in the Wizard of Oz film (i've not read the books) is that it all took place in Dorothy's concussed mind. I haven't seen it in years though so it probably does that 'ah.. but explain THIS!' thing at the end suggesting it was reality, right? If that's the case why were all the major characters 'actual' people on the farm in the sepia reality? Oh, and Liza Minelli is playing the witch in this new one right? RIGHT??
-
sorry...Talkbacker moment there... Flying Fucking Monkeys, Midgets, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz...I'm a guy...how could I not be at least a little interested in this?
-
No, wait thats a fucking stupid tagline
-
Some actual ARTISTRY on display, here...no giant floating heads, no awful Photoshop. I'm sure we'll get the Big Heads in later posters and DVD/Blu art, but this is nice.
-
Fuck this mid week Holiday shit. Really...just Make the Official Holiday the First Monday of July already...How do they expect us to drink and blow shit up fucking Mid-Week. Mid-Week Holidays...It's fucking UnAmerican.

Oz isn't really all that interesting. Don't know what all the fuss is about.

Not sure about Franco. Depp as OZ woulda been cool, RDJ even a bit edgier...but the real question is, who is Bruce Campbell going to play? And is Raimi gonna throw his old car in here again somehow?

...Evil Dead 2 is as good as any movie. To find fault in Evil Dead 2 is to find the uptightness of your own being. The movie is flawless in it's pursuit of the most grueling experience in action/horror/comedy. This Wizard of Oz business still has to earn my dollars though.
-
What's with the ragging on Raimi for fuck's sake? Evil Dead films, Darkman, Spiderman 2 (and bits of 1), A Simple Plan, Drag Me to Hell and his work with the Coens gives this guy a free pass as far as I'm concerned.
-
July 4, 2012, 2:02 p.m. CST
And yes, the poster should read, "From the visionary director of the 'Evil Dead' trilogy..."

Then I might consider seeing it. Nice poster art though.

Yes, if it wasn't for the bag ass colorful hot air balloon. the ominous clouds with twisters, a yellow brick road that leads to a gianormous Emerald City then yes indeed it looks like the Shire. It's the Rorschach for you!

KRISPY KREME!!!!! he's got 400 scars and 400 cars. 400 Houses and 400 mouses. Or so I heard.
by peter
-
He's made a very good trilogy with the EVIL DEAD films, and made one good superhero movie (SPIDER-MAN 2). That does not a "visionary" make. Guillermo del Toro is a visionary director. Peter Jackson is a visionary director. Ridley Scott, Stanley Kubrick, Alfonso Cuaron, Martin Scorsese. Not Raimi, sorry.
-
July 4, 2012, 3:18 p.m. CST
Sam Raimi is a visionary, his camera was the monster in the Evil Dead films
by gunnarcannibal
Love him or hate him he has his own style and you know when you are watching a Raimi film. Raimi's directing was the true star of all the Evil Dead films. You can't deny that, without his innovations and camera work those movies would have been boring as hell. Come on! Once you can do a parody of someone's style or pick out things to ridicule you have also acknowledged that they do in fact have their own unique vision. Also, A Simple Plan was Coen Brothers level of amazing, but everyone seems to forget that movie, I wish he would abandon blockbusters, I don't want him turning into Tim Burton.
-
Hmm. Mila Kunis in something black tight and flowing, riding around on hard wood? I'm sold.
-
July 4, 2012, 3:22 p.m. CST
If you deny A Simple Plan and Darkman in an argument against Raimi you do not have an argument
by gunnarcannibal
Sam Raimi is one of a kind.
-
Nice handle btw.
-
Ridiculous title, unnecessary film. "Oz The Great and Powerful"? Uh...the LAND was called Oz...not the wizard. And we already learned plenty about him (like the fact he's an ordinary guy) in The Wizard of Oz making this film a pointless grab at ticket money of which they won't be getting any from me. Geeks should stop and smell the java...wake up...don't see this simply because Raimi's name is attached to it.
-
Costner.Baseball. Raimi. Boredom.
-
July 4, 2012, 5 p.m. CST
if Zack Snyder is a visionary director (according to the trailers of Watchmen and Suckerpunch), Raimi is even more visionary.
by hank henshaw
Evil Dead 2 was way more groundbreaking than all of Snyder's shitty cinematography put together.
-
Nope just Ain't It Cool. Carry on.
-
Just kidding. I think this idea is either the most ambitious or most audacious Hollywood has attempted for a while. I really don't know what to expect. I think Sam Raimi does take the initiative to make a universe his "own". I think it would be cool to see our main character plopped in a world that is so radically different from our own. The books are probably a good source of a ton of freaky ideas. And I hope we get to learn more about the witches (which would be a deviation from the books, as far as I know, but who the hell cares about the books these days!). But Mila Kunis seems a bad choice... I don't know how they're going to reconcile her voice.
-
Who said Whedon would ruin the Avengers and Chris Evans was a horrible choice for Captain America. You know... morons.
-
If the balloon was at an angle, and you pulled the cord for flame, it would go straight up, directly perpendicular to the ground...opposing gravitational pull. Not at an angle like it is drawn. If the laws of physics are that different in the universe this poster takes place in, then the tornados in the background would perhaps not be possible. Everything would look different.

"visionary" as a term relating to directors, gets thrown around too casually these days
by lv_426
David Lean, Stanley Kubrick, Ridley Scott... now those are directors I can see being called visionary while still keeping a relatively straight face when doing so. Overall though, it is a pretty rare occurrence where we get new visionary directors decade after decade. Seriously though, using the term visionary just sounds pompous in most cases. As if you are trying to prop up someone that makes films to god-like prophet status.
-
I doff my cap to you...
-
...why you would brag about a connection to "Alice in Wonderland", particularly such a tenuous one.
-
July 4, 2012, 7:27 p.m. CST
And also there is a lot of wind happening in that poster...
by pr0g2west
So the flame should look even more distorted. I know im nit-picking...but that flame just takes me out of the whole vibe...everything else about the poster is brilliant.

Questioning the directionality of a flame that's in a tornado that's also a magic wormhole...
by Adelai Niska
...oh, talkback.
-
I may be wrong but, if it's a burst of flame from a jet system (which is used now on hot air baloons) then the flame would go in the direction the jet is pointed yes? At least for the few seconds it's being "fired". Obviously I can't think of the right words to describe what I'm thinking, but I think I got my point across. I may be completely wrong. I'm no scienmatist.
-
There's already a Wicked movie in the works, which will probably be way better. What's the point?
-
And they will contradict each other. In one the wizard will be a bad guy, and in the other (I'm assuming) he will be a good guy.
-
Much love for that movie but no one ever seems to reference it when talking about Raimi.
-
Stupid book that some shitty author wrote. He puts sex and violence into a pristine children's book that he STOLE, and some fucks think it's a work of art. Then a stage show is made out of it, and it's a bit too gay even for Broadway, plus it sucks, if it does leave out the dumbest parts of the book, such as when the Scarecrow or whoever implies that the Wicked Witch of the West was a lesbian. Jesus. But even if it did excise some of the more asinine parts, the songs are SHIT. Goddess, what some people consider entertainment these days...
-
Wicked?
-
(assumes deep voiceover man voice) *This spring, the visionary director of SPIDERMAN 3 and the stoned halfwit from Oscar night will rape a classic in front of your eyes. Get ready for the magic...*
-
...they used it to describe Rob Zombie. The only way in which Rob Zombie could technically be called "visionary" is that he has eyes.

Correction: "from The visionary Director of Two GOOD Spider-man Films".
by Stalkeye
Sorry, But the third act doesn't count for bragging rights. But i'm curious on Raimi's take on Oz, it'll be almost as dark, quirky and whimisical as a Tim Burton project.
-
--and isn't Downey Jr. playing The Wizard? Meh. Torrent for me.

his best film
-

Raimi is deserving of props just for Evil Dead 1,2 and Darkman alone.
by Stalkeye
Despite being a disappointment, Darkman was a one of a kind concept with interesting use of cinematogaphy. (Citing; the scene in which Francis mcdormand witnesses peyton's "demise" then a second afterwards she is attending his funeral.) The film had great deal of potentual but was somewhat wasted on a boring showdown against his main nemesis, Strack. That and not exploiting his superhuman abilities(strength, spped and resistance to pain.) enough to give me an overall impression that he's some kick ass Superhero/Vigilante. that being said, you can't go wrong with the most memorable line in the film; "Take the fucking Elephant".
-
Did the cast of Wicked push you on the subway or something? I actually found myself enjoying Wicked way more than I thought I would. I do think the end of musical is an unnecessary bummer. (spoilers to follow if anyone is enough of a theater geek to care, but not enough iof a theater geek to have seen it already ... you have been warned ) It should have been revealed at the end that G(a)linda was aware of the deception and chose not to say anything.
-
Only the 1939 movie was Dorothy's dream, the books (and most other versions) were not.
-
. . . if the Wheelers showed up in this!
-
Gotcha. Have they outright stated this is drawing from the books? Presumably so. Did the books go into the Wizard's story pre-Dorothy or is this an 'IMAGINING'?
-
... or is the Wizard the least interesting character in The Wizard of Oz? He has no power, no ability and is pretty much the "bad guy" of the piece - albeit an unscary one. I'd much rather they made a film of the book Wicked which explores the important characters in the original story with the Wizard as an auxillary agent to the events which occur.
-

Speaking of visionary. How about a live action Visionaries.
by adeceasedfan
Yep, Knights of the Magical Light! Bitches!!
-
I'm wondering where/how he'll incorporate a scene of someone getting blown backward off their feet violently. That's always been one of his hallmarks for me.
-
Ok, I will utter the unspeakable: Raimi has gotten by on his name and the same camera tricks for a loooooooooooooooooooooooooong time. Spiderman 3 was......well....we all know what Spiderman 3 was. Drag Me to Hell, despite the inconveivable amount of cock slobbering it received on this sight a really bad movie. It really was, and it does not stand up to even being a bad movie on repeat viewings. The Meryl Streep movie? Dreck. Spiderman 2 was awesome as was the first one, although the new movie shows what could have been. The newSpiderman movie isn't all that either but it absofuckinglutely nails some things that Raimi should have gotten right. Now all that being said, and as much as we all hate the whole prequel, rehash, reboot, sequel, yadda yadda yadda of current Hollywood and knowing that to judge my excitement level based prely and sorely on a fucking teaser poster.....welll.......what a great and awesome poster. That poster is beautiful, magical, whimsical, hell, it's OZ! Now,despite my mistrust if you will in current Raimi and despite someone in marketing actually having the audacity to promote a movie by bragging that it has ANYONE involved in that celluloid abortion known as Alice In WOnderland puked out by Tim Burton like the tequila worm in Poltergeist 2, well, I really am looking forward to seeing the trrailer so I get even more pumped up for this ultimTELY TO BE DISSAPOINTED BY THE FINISHED PRODUCT. Hi the caps lock, wasn;t yelling. Anyway, there's my fucking two cents. Don't spend em all packing the crack pipe.
-
I don't care who's doing the film, that poster is GREAT. Next time we get a bobblehead poster for some film, I'm going to refer the PR team back to this shining example.
-
Yeah, me too. Return to Oz is definitely a guilty pleasure film.
-
but actually an original story that hasn't been filmed before? I'm impressed.

You've been warned. And yeah, some of the actual Oz books, especially "The Land of Oz" could make good movies. Still, I'm willing to give this Disney Oz movie a shot, unless the rumors are true, that it's going to be a lot more like "Wicked" than the 1939 film classic.

In some of his books, L. Frank Baum provided some contradictory backstrory about the Wizard in pre-Dorothy Oz. There are non-series books (I've read one published in Russia) that go into more detail. Also, there were 40 books in the "official" Oz series, 14 by Baum. For more information see http://thewizardofoz.info/wiki/Oz_FAQ

"scratchmonkey, When it comes to most of his Music, Zombie is somewhat of a Visionary."
by buggerbugger
In which way? And are we talking White Zombie or Rob Zombie?
-
Someone goes looking for something, but gets stranded...then there's someone who is what he is, but not what you think, but you already know who he's gonna be. Everyone's a bit younger in this movie, and there's some pretty cool special effects to trick you into thinking this is a great movie, and there's a bad guy that's pretty bad @ss, but you really don't get enough of him, just enought to wet your appetite for more. In the end it's a lot of nonsense built around one of the greatest movies ever made, but since you already know how everything is going to end up in the end you really don't care about anything at all. Oooopps.. no wait that was the Phantom Menace. Sorry, my bad.
