Learn What Alex Kingston
Would Like To See Happen With Her River Song Character!!
Alex Kingston - who plays flirty, coy, sexy, precocious, and frustrating adventurer Melody Pond (aka River Song) on DOCTOR WHO - appeared at the Florida Supercon in Miami over the weekend.
AICN reader Michael Jackson's Ghost shaped an opportunity to ask Ms. Kingston one question on behalf of Aint It Cool News - the embed below is a video of her interesting response.
I'd like to offer a huge thanks for MJG's graciousness, time, and efforts! Here's the brief exchange...

So can a commenter post this story for those of use without headphones?
by yneway
And those of us who are curious enough about this to spend 15 seconds reading, but not curious enough sit through a 2 minute video.
-
I can think of other words. This particular Mary Sue needs to be bumped off, erased from history, never to return, never to be referred to again. Awful addition to the series.
-
Nice one Alex, great idea, there's some mileage in that as a concept. If not as a TV show, perhaps as an audio series or web series?
-
Been here ten years, never had a first! Ain't that cool!
-
She knows all the right keywords to drop to get the fanboys/girls howling, doesn't she? Talk about knowing your audience. For those without headphones, she posits that River has plenty of adventures on her own without the Doctor and those would be fun to play out. She also suggests that River knows Captain Jack and it would be fun to see those two interact.
-
that since she has her own adventures between appearing in the Doctors life, as a time travelling archaeologist, she'd imagine that River has a lot of different adventures. She mentions that she thinks River knows Captain Jack for example. And would like RTD to do an adventure with them together, even though Torchwood hasn't been picked up. She admits there's a possibility of some sort of spin off, but the Moffat won't have time to even think of something else, what with Sherlock and Who etc...
-
....she says she may be available to reprise the character, but only under any circumstances.
-
I'd like to think that should be 'certain' rather than 'any', but then again we all gotta eat.
-
I do not want to debate the merits of the character, and maybe I misunderstand the definition of Mary Sue, but she does not seem like one to me.
-
What's with all the assholes talking during her answer?
-
I'd always thought a Mary Sue needed to be, essentially, an idealized version of the author--basically a sort of wish fulfillment--but it turns out it applies to any overly idealized character. So if you feel she's a little too cool for school, if she's just too awesome and too perfect and whatnot, she fits. I'd point you to the tvtropes page for ''Mary Sue'' but I wouldn't wish that website on anyone. I feel like there must be another term for a character who the author really, really loves and the audience really, really doesn't, but again, I'm not going to tvtropes to find it. I'll lose my whole day if I do. (Not saying any of this would apply to River, of course, but I'd say that's a fair assessment of the situation for people who don't like her character.)
-
Is anyone still watching this?
-
I find I cringe at interviews with celebrities personally, but the audience was clearly enjoying themselves and hanging on her every word so she definitely played her part for them.
-
Yup. And is your name meant to be spelt like that, or can you simply not spell "Assassin"?
-
Do I like everything that's been done with her? No. But I like having a character that out the Doctor off balance without being just another villain. The closest I can think of before this is Romana. Any others?
-
Only watched a few with Matt Smith in it, it seems to have went back to the Sylvester McCoy era. And yes, meant to be spelt like that (its a legacy from an original misspelling back in Duke Nukem multiplayer days....)
-
would be "Wesley" as in Wesley Crusher. Also known as "Creator's Pet." Basically someone that the writers super love and cram down your throats. Bonus points if all of the other characters talk them up. Captain Jack would have been one of these as well, if people had hated him.
-
but not quite as much as I hate John Barrowman :)

River / Captain Jack spin-off or cameo, eh? Can't say I'm thrilled, but would at least watch it...

Thanks. The question came from Merrick, and I forwarded it to Ms. Kingston. Other interesting things that came from the Q&A. The Moff is the only person allowed to write/direct the character of River Song. Ms. Kingston was asked what is the difference between working with Tennant/Smith. Her answer was that Tennant between takes/filming would start card games, or word games so that his mind would always be working on something. And with Smith, he likes to play his guitar, or start soccer games. If she could keep any prop, it would be the diary. Matt Smith is the most clumsy person on Earth. He is well known for dropping, and breaking props. She is Mark Gatiss's #1 fan. Ms. Kingston knows the Doctor's real name!

Jeez, you'd think geeks would know better. There are retards in every group.

Dr. Who showrunners have a talent for making some very attractive characters...
by Playkins
...and I don't just mean physically.
-
"The Moffat" needs to do something more with her soon. I love how she's developed so far, but I'm getting a little tired of not having more background on her. And if Who isn't going to provide it soon, I think some specials or a spin-off with River would be an excellent way to do it. Alex is a great actress and her energy and wit bring much to the show, and much more I think than the Doctor's recent tag-along compliment.
-
Sounds like a decent, universe-sized, problem solving duo! Actually, I'd really like to explore the Cap'n Jack/Face of Bo timeline, if that's even applicable anymore.
-
I never minded Kingston until she took on that role, and now I can barely watch her. The character is beyond annoying and should be phased out as permanently as can be on a show about time travel.
-
How isn't she?! She's the ultimate in Mary Sues. She's such a Mary Sue that the central character can't help but fall in love with her, run off and marry her! Every time she's on screen it's like watching Moffat in drag.

"I hated Captain Jack but not quite as much as I hate John Barrowman :)"
by buggerbugger
I can't separate them in my mind. Jack Barrowness is made out of despicable plastic, like some kind of sleazy, Auton sexual predator oozing its "charm" across the screen.

"Harkness and Song. Sounds like a decent, universe-sized, problem solving duo!"
by buggerbugger
They'd spend at least 40 minutes of each episode parrying one another's double entendres. Then it would devolve into 'Torchwood' for the remainder. Still, whatever keeps 'em both away from DW is fine by me.

Hope they never reveal the Doctor's name - It'll be a perma-anticlimax to the fans - Kinda like strip-mining Boba Fett...
by obijuanmartinez

Fascinating about the Moff being the only one allowed to write her into anything. That does limit things. Unless of course.... he were to choose to do a series with her after leaving Who. I doubt that though. He will probably want to take a break from that universe at that point. I hope that point comes later than sooner though.
-
But I still hope his name is something like George McDonald. Or maybe just Tim.
-
Stacy. Stacy Peters.
-
is John Smith. He's said it a number of times. It may not be the name he had on Gallifrey, but who cares?
-
... the River Song character in stand alone adventures in a Valerian/Ron Goulart/Mike Resnick type future setting, away from any mention of the Doctor or related characters, as long as she nevers says "spoilers". But the Jack Harkness character, if he reappears at all, needs to go back to Doctor Who. I just find the character works better, and is more fun/enjoyable, on the main show. Either that or, if Torchwood comes back, they need to give him an authority figure to play against.
-
River Song needs to be strapped to a reality bomb and completely obliterated. The character is so insufferably smug I'd be happier having Bonnie Langford back on the show. The only character I dislike as much as River is that chavette played by Billie.

River/Amy/Roy have between them spoiled Who since Smith arrived ... As characters they dominate and stifle him, can't wait for them all to fade away.
by GINGE_MUPPET

I can't believe that emotionless ginger would be "cool" on any show! Just watching her "act" on ER was nauseating enough. Well, it's just the same. People like Amazing Spiderman although it's an abomination and insulting to the source material.

Anytime.

River Song isn't a Mary Sue but Rose Tyler certainly was the definitive uber Mary Sue
by lynxpro
...and what a totally inferior character compared to the previous on-screen female companion [hint, I'm not referring to lame-o Ace either].
-
And why would The Moff trust RTD to use his own creation [River Song] when RTD couldn't even write his own created character - Captain Jack - the best? Even with his own show, Captain Jack wasn't better than his own appearances on Who itself. That should tell you something. And his best written appearance was in his debut episodes, which were written by The Moff.
-
you fucking dolt. How about filming video with the phone in landscape mode, you shitbrick. Who wants to see black fucking bars on the sides?
-
...is that last one, where The Doctor shows up, telling her she's about to go to a library, and somehow (I don't know how) hands her his 10th Doctor screwdriver with a few enhancements. I'd really love to have one character, not a companion or a love interest, but a character whose known ALL the incarnations of The Doctor, past present and future (Doctor wise). Someone the Doctor turns to in his darkest hours (usually after losing a Companion to death or some other force or by his own hand) and the character is a good listener but never reveals The Doctors future, no matter how bright or horrible what might be to come. A Character that's seen The Doctor die, truly die, but never reveals to The Doctor in what future incarnation he will finally meet his end or how (13th? 73rd? 3,148th?) I also want to see Alex Kingstons pencileraser/minimarshmallow nipples again.
-
until she was linked to the soap opera that is Amy Pond. Then again, it always seems that characters with mysterious origins always turn out to have lame backstories.
-
A bit off topic, but I just noticed that Skyone will be launching this show shortly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_H11CkII8o Anyone heard if it's supposed to be any good?
