Learn What Ain’t It Cool’s TV Critic Thinks Of Soderbergh's MAGIC MIKE!! And SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED!! Plus Herc’s Seen The Next Two BREAKING BAD Episodes!! Listen And Call In LIVE 8pm PT / 11pm ET Saturday!!
On Saturday night’s “Ask Mr. KERN,” I’ll be discussing Steven Soderbergh’s male-stripper epic “Magic Mike” and Colin Trevorrow’s time-travel comedy “Safety Not Guaranteed.”
I’ve also seen the next two episodes of AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” so that should come up. (Mr. KERN, if you’re reading this, we might talk a bit about the carriage situation with AMC and The Dish Network, which I find fascinating.)
The radio show airs Saturday 8:05 p.m. to 10 p.m. Pacific Time.
No matter where you are you can listen to the show LIVE by hitting the “Listen Live” button at kernradio.com.
Best of all, you, constant reader, can join this very nerdy conversation.
The toll-free call-in line is:
1-800-640-5376
Call in drunk, as I always do, but watch your language. This is not a podcast. This monster goes out over the air on all 50,000 watts of Southern California’s KERN-AM.
Have something better to do tonight? Want to listen to older shows? Head over to the “Ask Mr. KERN” archives!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!
-
... we will get into... time permitting, of course. TED will also be reviewed, and I have a lot to say about the premier of THE NEWSROOM. One last thing... DISH Network sucks. You heard it here first.
-
As a former resident of Kernville & Bakersfield, that made me smile. Nothing awesome comes from that part of California so it's cool to see people doing fun things in otherwise shitty places. Also, that Spider-Man 2 bluray cover looks like a blind retarded man made it 4th grade collage style. That shit looks horrific.

Whoops. I thought this was last week's Herc on movies.
by L.H.Puttgrass
I've been doing my posting in that one. I guess we start posting here now?
-
but at $9.99 Blu, I snapped that shit up in a hurry, ugly cover and all. Spidey 2 is awesome piled on wonderful.
-
I'm gonna get spoilt tonight. Ain't I? On another note, I had no idea that there was such a Hatfield & McCoy-like feud over spoiled vs spoilt. Amazing.
-
You ANIMALS! Hey. What's up?
-
I feel your Dish Network pain. DirecTV isn't much better. Is it dish that's dumping AMC in HD? What a STUPID move. Some of the best programming on TV and they dump IT and keep ..... golf in HD or bowling, or some reality TV trash channel in HD. But no AMC? Are they HIGH? Nah, if they were high, they would keep AMC in HD. Idiots.
-
Looks like I nabbed your "feel your pain" line without realizing it. Is there some Clinton in the air? I don't smell any. Oh well.
-
a very threatening, prehensile penis. In Photoshop 3. By a 7th grader.
-
what intern did they not pay to make that cover?
-
ADORED the Newsroom. Sure it's pure fantasy, but it's a damned fine fantasy. And it has an amazing cast as well as outstanding writing.
-

I guess Sony is treating the "old" Spiderman like a red-headed stepchild in favor of the new one.
by L.H.Puttgrass
"No money for you and your silly Blu-Ray, Mr. 2!" "We got a new kid in town!" Sad. That is one sloppy cover.
-
At least on the Internet/Radio.

everything raimi....trash tobey....trash were you in the raimi spidey movies? trash and then send the old liar out to spin a new web of lies on how he (basically alone) created spidey, and how his own cuz, goodman, tried to kill it http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/movies/spider-man-start-a-fly-wall-marvel-stan-lee-article-1.1102658?pgno=1#commentpostform maybe mr kern would like to discuss the above article, as it seems the so called reporter did absolutely no research interesting though, everything that is pointed out to have made the character popular...isnt in this movie...and yet it is getting mostly positive reviews....so maybe marty was right and stan is a fucking hack
-
As a fan of Boss, West Wing, Rubicon, and basically anything considered "talky," or that delves into the often tedious inner workings of a particular subject -- I had some mixed feelings about the premiere. It was sanctimonious. Some of the characters were a little overbearing and annoying. There was even a scene where I found myself wanting to bitch slap Sam fucking Waterston, the least annoying man in America. But that's because Aaron Sorkin is a self-absorbed, sanctimonious man, and you have to recognize that, heading into any of his material, parts of his ego will show in his characters and writing. But the premiere did shine in areas, especially when it got to the actual frenzied tension of covering the news. And some of the characters I found myself annoyed with were, by the end, tolerable, and even a little endearing, particularly the Jim Harper (who immediately reminded me of an r-rated Jim from the office) and Charlie Skinner (Waterston) characters. I do want to see more, but I also want to see it improve. A little less exposition. We need to learn things about the characters without being spoonfed everything up front, like Emily Mortimer's time in the Mid-East and her being stabbed. It's like I was being told why I should like this often grating woman, instead of being introduced to her and letting her grow on me. But I will be tuning in Sunday. This show has a lot of potential.

gotilk, go to amazon and check out the blu-ray covers for Spider-Man 1 and 3
by American Mythos
They're even worse. Good god, those have to be the absolute worst movie covers I've ever seen.
-
that youve already seen the first two episodes of breaking bad. like holy shit we still have half a month till the premiere. also curious to see what you thought of ted seeing as youre a macfarlane hater. i thought it was definently funnier than most eps of family guy (especially these last few seasons) and certainly better than any of his other shows. didnt think i would like ted as much as i did
-
...is a phrase that should be used more often in everyday conversation.
-
I have been with DirectTV for a long time and other than when they dropped the G4 network, I have nothing but praise for their service and product. It's the best. I was going to comment about that Spider2 blu-ray cover and then thought, "No, that can't be the real cover. Who would release something like that?" That's embarrassing. But, Herc is correct... at that price? To hell with the cover.
-
Yay!!!
-
I'm content with the contents.
-
why bother going to see a movie geard towards gay men and straight women, when you could've seen TED?
-
Yeah DirecTV was great for me for a while, and usually still is. That's the problem. I don't "usually" pay my bill. I "always" do. They have weird compression artifacts here, have had the dish adjusted and multiple visits here by techs. Yet, about once a month a single local HD network channel decides it will be unreliable, and just will not ever fully tune shows in.... but usually only during prime time. That can't be a dish position problem. I'm glad it's working out for you, the only other options here are Dish and Comcast/Xfinity. Both are horrible, and Xfinity is a word to best describe the upper limits of their bills. And they used to throttle me while I was downloading files from my E-MAILS!! Talk about paranoia. I use sDSL/DirecTV now, and pay more , but at least... well it all usually works reliably now at the least. Predictably insufficient would be a better way to describe it. I'll stop bitching now. Hey at least they give you good service. I know they do for a lot of other people I know. Maybe they just need to send out a new DVR receiver.
-
Yeah, when I think about it, I never have either. Most probably do not. These are just particularly awful.
-
Spidey in color on left, Spidey in B&W in right upper corner. Hulk make cover. Hulk should have smashed instead.
-
Hulk better at smashing.
-
Hulk like buildings. Mostly for smashing.
-
But Hulk no like being called Paul WS Anderson. Hulk make bad choice for name.
-
I had it awhile back and its DVR capability was awesome. Great selection of channel packages, but it got to be expensive after the deals dried up. I was (am) a loyal DirecTV subscriber when I could afford it. I never had any issues other than weather related ones. HATE Time Warner and their endless price gouge though. Now I'm down to rabbit ears and netflix. Times is tight.
-
I never tried Uverse. I don't think it's an option here, but I'll check. I'm close to your solution.... Internet and HD broadcast, over the air. I would love to blame weather for my DirecTV problems, but it's pretty much sunny and clear here.
-
I like my chunk of static IP addresses. I like toying around with servers and services.
-
Fucking California! I spent some time in Santa Barbara area, so yeah I'm jealous.
-
Well, we are more likely to have a Katrina-like disaster than New Orleans is at this point. So we have that. lol Yeah, even I get sick of the sunshine here. It is pretty constant. Then again, we have summer days in the 100s. For WEEKS. It gets pretty exhausting.
-
I swear that thing is filled with Maher-hating troll sock puppet accounts. I don't fall in line with Maher all the time. I'm not some super-fan. But man, the criticisms there against him don't even make sense. I looked into that "racism" accusation. Umm... he mentioned primates and in another part of the article mentioned the name of one black politician. And the accusation is that he was basically calling the guy a monkey. But he didn't. He said the primate comment at the beginning of the article, and named a few names later in the article. So... now it's racist to call Republicans monkeys IF a black Republican is mentioned in another part of the article? Yeah... those Republicans and their battle against racism. lol What a bunch of 'tards. Oops. Did I just insult Boehner? How do you put up with it, Herc? Without whipping out the banhammer. Obvious troll is obvious. I gotta give you credit for restraint.
-
Try 100° days with 100% humidity. North Carolina summers can be brutal. Had a few unusually dry 80° days this month so that was nice. Herc, we need a Weather Channel Talkback around these parts. Captivating stuff. :)
-
Is this the beginning of the end?? Nah. Ouch. I visited that area years ago. It was muggy, hot, wet and we had a plague of locusts or something when I was there. Then a mild hurricane. Great vacation. lol But then again I'll never forget Charleston, SC and visiting an aircraft carrier. Awesome.
-
Anyone getting pages that won't load randomly?
-
Yes, since yesterday on mobile and online. Major hiccups.
-
South Louisiana: 94F tomorrow w/ 62% humidity I'd rather not talk about the heat index 'cuz it's been freakin' HOT!!
-
"We're sorry, but something went wrong." "We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly." Otherwise, nothing. No problems at all. Time for homework. Gotta watch The Newsroom.
-
Weren't they a ska band in the 80s?
-
But I really enjoyed Safety Not Guaranteed (don't know why it got to SE Wisconsin already). One question...can Aubrey Plaza act or is she just herself in every tv show or movie? And if you thought The Newsroom's premiere was a bit strident, preachy and sanctimonious, you ain't seen nothing yet, lol.

i wouldve had no problem with a reboot had they either made it closer to the original series, or made it the ultimate spidey (which sux, but kids like) but they did neither and critics like it...cuz it aint a superhero movie...its a teen love story...and i believe that the majority of critics are closet pedo;s

welivestill...ornot / waltkovacs - Okay, here's my problem with it.
by L.H.Puttgrass
Raimi. The suits at Sony bent him over and just went to town! After doing such a great job with Spidey 1 & 2, they for some reason felt it was necessary to mess with him on Spidey 3. Shoehorning in the Venom character. I don't know how far that went. Did it include the symbiote alien that becomes the black suit? The Emo Peter Parker? How much further did their meddling go? What would it have been if they just left him alone? How pissed off was Raimi during filming? Did that affect the outcome? We'll never know. What we do know is that while he was putting together Spidey 4, the suits yanked the rug out from under him. Apparently, they didn't like where 4 was going and blamed him for the problems with 3. They said they wanted to reboot the franchise with a teenage, still in high school Peter Parker. And then they cast a guy who is ten years too old. He'll be 30 next year. Can he play the part? I don't know. I just know what they said they were going to and what they've done. And that they thought this was better than letting Raimi do Spidey 4. They created the problem in 3 and now, trying to cover their asses after cutting out Raimi and needing to make a movie to keep the rights to make Spiderman movies, they're putting out this quickly made reboot. Maybe Webb made a good movie, maybe he didn't. I just hate all the behind the scenes shenanigans that led to this. Screw those stupid Sony suits!
-
I think people are missing it when they say the show is preachy. It's more of a fantasy. It's what you'd WANT a newsroom to be. Young, enthusiastic people DYING to get to the truth. Saying F the corporation that owns the show and the advertisers. Just bringing you the raw truth. Definitely a fantasy.

When I was a kid, a friend of my sister gave me a huge box of comics to read and Gaurdians was my absolute favorite. Out of Avengers, Iron Man, Spidey, etc etc. Just adored those comics.

the badoon? earthman out of time and place i just didnt know it at the time if they use the first series, will make a great animated feature...and could lead to sequels they should not try it as live action, as it will be far too expensive

You guys make my week. Be safe and have a great 4th.
-
I *loved* the 80s Guardians and have liked what I've seen of the recent revival. Vance Astro was one of my favorite heroes, and I'll line up now if a vacuum-sealed Vance is the head of this cinematic team. I wonder if they'd use the Cosmic Cube to beam Captain America to the future and have him take the Vance role, giving it an intimate connective tissue to The Avengers.

Okay, time for more titles for the next Star Trek that don't have the words "star" or "trek" in them.
by L.H.Puttgrass
I'll go with one from last week's TB that has probably been seen by no one: Tribble String Theory This one is rumored to be directed by Tom Six. It apparently has something to do with tribbles, string, KY jelly, and oddly enough, some kind of perverse activity.
-
Capt. Kirk (Pine) and the Enterprise crew try to figure out why all the aliens they meet seem to always look like humans with different kinds of bumps and shapes on their heads. Somebody asks about Spock's ears and a fight breaks out on the bridge. At no point in the movie is Facebook mentioned. And I think that's for the best.
-
Believe me, I wish I could see what everybody else sees in the guy. But I'd be lying if I said I love his stuff. I apparently have odd taste in art generally. I love Bryan Hitch's stuff, for example, but people are always telling me he's a hack.
-
More time travel shenanigans. This time we end up with Pine's Kirk vs Shatner's Kirk. Shatner's 60's Kirk! Over here we have Mr. Shit. And over here we have Mr. Fan. Have you guys met? Don't answer that! 'Cuz you're about to bros!
-
i would never have picked up the ultimates if it wasnt for his art...millar is the hack and his work on the authority is brilliant...especially his take on kirby....hah btw, if you ever watch docs on kirby, most artists say they first hated his work, as it doesnt follow any rules...and thats the point he made them up...and its brilliant

Turns out in this alternate timeline / universe, when Vulcans hit their Pon Farr they don't just have to get to their mates or die. They both have to get to Vulcan also. Which is now a problem since somebody destroyed it. Kirk and the Enterprise are asked to find a place that is thought to be only a legend in writings of old civilizations. The planet making planet, MAGRATHEA! Will they find it? Can they find a myth? How improbably-likely is it? Vulcans are dropping dead left and right with nowhere to go. Somebody needs to make another Vulcan before we run out of Vulcans! And there ain't that many Vulcans left to begin with! Drink some beer! Relax! Grab your towel and get ready! J.J.Abrams is coming at you with dynamite in both fists! It's "The Search for Magrathea"!!!
-
McCoy gets split into two people after a transporter malfunction. One seems to be the good old country doctor we all know and love. The other appears to be disoriented by his new surroundings. After obtaining a weapon, he goes on a paranoid rampage thru the ship. He kills several crewmen, telling them that "they have been judged guilty!". Spock fights him and subdues him with a neck pinch. Both doctors are put on the transporter pad. Before Scotty energizes the transporter, the other McCoy mutters,"...man, I... gotta get back to Mega-City One..." Bones seems fine after, but later Kirk notices that he is more of an asshole than normal.
-
The Enterprise embarks on a rescue mission after receiving a distress call from a long lost ship. Turns out to be a ruse and Capt. Pike is captured by a race of giant gay scrotum headed beings, The Tailosians. They probe his 'ahem' mind to create a fantasy world where he must strip in a cage to entice a female crash survivor and eventually repopulate the planet with male stripper slaves. Pike refuses and narrowly escapes. Meanwhile, Nu-Spock willingly agrees to stay behind and 'Work it' for the sack domed captors. Set phasers to 'Stunning!' Followed by sequels Magic Pike II: The Bath of Khum and Magic Pike III: The Search for Cock
-
This talkback has broke my brain.
-
You and your show make my week. Is that sad in a way? Who cares? True is true. Love it all, wish I had heard 100% of the show this time, but duties called. With bad timing. What can you do? See you next week. Hope I get a chance to actually call in some time.
-
You had me at "set phasers for STUNNING". I can just hear that being said in that stereotypical gay voice. Too funny, man. Too funny.
-
It breaks your brain. Okay, maybe not the best slogan. Back to the drawing board.
-
I remember as a kid trying to draw characters with that characteristic Kirby "energy" stuff (lots of circles and color, beams of light, energy bubbles, etc) shooting out of their hands, weapons, etc. I did that for years and eventually kind of got it down.
-
Magic Pike Magic Pike II: The Bath of Khum Magic Pike III: The Search for Cock That's just too damn funny! Well done!
-
Keeping this sucker going all friggen week. We can do it!! and THIRD HOUR!!! THIRD HOUR!!! We could call all their sponsors and request that they call the station and ask for a third hour. NO!!! NO!!! That might actually have the opposite effect. Just kidding, guys.

Just kiddin', man. Would love to have ya, but I get it. Stick around if you can, but see you Saturday if you can't.
-
Trust me.
-
But we do enjoy our traditions here.
-
And all that.
-
Nice and perky, or did she get a boob job? Hope not.
-
is to show them off after they get those horrific, mutilating boob jobs. Someone should take out an ad in Variety saying simply... "Dear Hollywood actresses' boobs: We love you just the way you are. And after you get a boob job, we'd rather not see them. The time to show them off is when they're still attractive. END the shame! Accept yourselves just the way you are. We love you already." Signed: Everyone with taste and over 28-ish. Let's face it, for the most part the only people who actually like boob jobs are teens and other guys who are more interested in impressing their dads and male friends than what the ladies themselves look like. I know, harsh. But I think there's at least a little bit of truth to it. Bottom line... boobs sag a little after a few years. It's natural. It's maturity.

I got your back this week, L.H. I swear.
-
at least for a while. C'mon folks! This carpet cave aint gettin' any plusher.
-
God damn lightning storms and power outages causing to miss the show.
-
So...what was discussed? Any word on whether it has maintained its quality?

shermdawg - You didn't get any damage from those storms did you?

Looks like it caught people by surprise. It got bad in a hurry. Hope you and yours are okay.

Hey! Hollywood Starlets! Leave your breasts alone! I like a natural looking body. That's true beauty. And while we're on the subject, I don't really care for tattoos or piercings either. Look your age ladies, and own it!
-
The Enterprise gets into some very heavy shit involving a large Klingon fleet of warships, their invasion of Federation space, and a "Q" apparently stirring it up! But we don't see all of this because the entire movie is seen thru the eyes of two scared shitless red shirts. Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are two guys in the Engine Room whose duties usually keep them in the bowels of the ship. But not anymore! They spend their time in the movie running from explosions, Klingons, more explosions, more Klingons, general anarchy and high anxiety. And then they're blown out an airlock. In Imax 3D.
-
Hope everything's alright.
-
Naaaa. I like the curt, irreverent, "fuck you, you're a red shirt" feel of 'blown out an airlock.'. It fits.
-
Just a lot of sitting around and sweatin', and yeah that shit came out of nowhere.
-
Do you mean http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3oSyr8mHY4 or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dny_JDlwGFM or perhaps http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtkeJdNtmkM or even perhaps maybe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_1uQ9wn0qQ ??? Never heard of it. ;)

Mother Nature can be a real Bitch!
-
Yep. Those.
-
Yeah, not too bad. They'll never turn it into a franchise though.
-
It was a pretty good show. Herc said that Breaking Bad just keeps getting better each season. So I assume that means.... OH HELL YES!! I love that show.
-
Something about Beers, steers and....

The Amazing BAD! ...with sneakers.
-
I expected a few at least. Oh well. I'll keep checking in. Hope you're all having a great Monday.
-
That's fine, I'll take it.
-
Great so far. I love all the detail left out of the series. I'm having a blast with it.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNxLxTZHKM8& I will miss him.
-
He always reminded me of my dad. Except always there, nicer, more reliable and with a most likely listed phone number. No, but seriously, I will dearly miss the man. I could always count on Andy for a wholesome laugh and a sense that there was fairness in the world still. He played a good man and he was a good man. He will be missed.
-
Blow some stuff up! Make some stuff smoke (or alternately... you know) and celebrate our independence. Have a great holiday, people!

Very sad indeed. The Andy Griffith Show was a staple in my house. I can only hope to instill the kind of values and lessons that show exhibited to my children. We frequent a local park near N.C. State that has a wonderful bronze of Andy and Opie with their fishin' poles that is a great reminder of simpler times. RIP Andy.
