THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS trailer is the sort of throwdown badassery that we kung fu loving maniacs stay awake at night hoping someone is making!
Hey folks, Harry here... my first film genre that I loved was Kung Fu films, now that some folks that love the genre intensely have gotten their genre loving fingers upon its realm, hold onto your intestines, this film will most likely try to rip them out of ya! Produced by Quentin Tarantino. Co-Written by Eli Roth. All from a story written, directed & featuring the mighty RZA. Backed by Universal - and apparently it farts in the general direction of the MPAA - because this trailer - it's a red-band debut that gives us fountains of artfully spraying blood. KNB is doing some amazing work in here - AND they have a budget for solid CG. SO - let's see what they give us. I'm anticipating the sort of awesome that fans of MANGA & ANIME may be prepared for. Folks that love RIKI-OH: THE STORY OF RICKY will want to see. Russell Crowe is the confusing element for me. I'm dying to see how this film coalesces. But for now, we have the magnificence of this first blood red band trailer. Put plastic over your keyboard before playing...

That would be nasty!

and video game quality special effects. Cool idea, poor execution. CGI ruins entertainment for the 100,000th time.

Was he unable to change the very urban inner city cadence to his voice? Is that a nitpick given the twirly knife gun and dandy clothing Crowe has on? I don't know. Films like this just don't do much for me I guess.

Fuck this shit. Oh, I mean fuck dat shiznit. I see RZA is the star of the movie. It's really not a good idea to associate with people who put themselves in every movie they make.

RZA's first movie huh? I imagined it more chopsocky, less special effects-y but it definitely looks insane.

Who the fuck is RZA and why should anyone be impressed that he directed a movie?

by Terrence
I was certain this would be one of the trailers no one could bitch about on this site, yet here we are.

"Who's Rza?"? Seriously? Have you been in a coma for the last 20 years and know absolutely nothing about contemporary music?
-
half were born after 1995 and the other half haven't left their basements since then
-
I'm really anticipating this one. RZA was basically born to do this!
-
I guess us corny white geeks will have to stick to our lame, old school kung fu movies while you sit back and experience all of the bad ass awesomness of ripoffs of Ninja Assasin with all its slo mo super cool, hip cgi blood and violence while pretending to have seen Enter the Dragon. Man you are my hero. Youre so well versed in kung fu cinema that when someone is disappointed in a poorly cut trailer for a faux kung fu movie you can immediatley call them on their passive racist bullshit. I think now I'll go buy a Scarface t-shirt and wear it every day, even though I've never seen Scarface.

Not only is he one of the most influential people in hip hop ever, but his impressive knowledge and love for kung fu flicks has been evident for around 20 years now. If anyone should be given the money to make one on this scale, it's him and it's about time!

These guys loved old skool kung-Fu so much they intigrated it into their ALBUMS... I would like to try your Wu-Tang style, Let's Begin Then! This looks good enough to watch, It does help that Lucy Lui is just SO HOT as well as being SO Bad-Ass.... Russel Crow is no longer in Gladiator shape though... he's... Looking less action and more traction..

because in that trailer alone I spotted nods to about 5 absolute classics. I'll give you 100 bucks for every one you can name! ...no I didn't think so.
-
It looks just like all the goofy kung-fu movies the RZA grew up with, the kind that many of you adore. I see nothing wrong with this. It looks miles above The Machine Girl, Tokyo Gore Police, and The Flying Guillotine. But whether or not there is character and soul to latch on to, to sympathize with and root for, we'll see. But Lucy Liu and Crowe being involved, I'm inclined to believe there will be.
-
WTF!!!!! Is every shitty looking movie supposed to be thought of as good when it more than likely will be shit. This looks fucking terrible and cheap. I especially am fuckin sick of all this gliding through the air matrix wire work shit in these movies. What ever happened to real martial arts.

..and eat. And eat. And eat. My god, this is the man that was Maximus only 12 years ago. And RZA needs to do a few more push-ups instead of just curls. Unless manboobs are part of his kata. Lord, this movie looks like Mortal Kombat ran head-on into Kill Bill and neither one was wearing seatbelts. Bleh. Oh, and this movie isn't complete without Wesley Snipes, Eric Roberts, Christian Slater, or Val Kilmer. In fact, I hope they go back and add an eating contest--to the death!--between Val and Crowe.

by D.Vader
Saying some white guy insisted on "ill-fitting" rap music for a kung-fu movie trailer written by and starring a rap music icon who idolizes these types of movies does feel a bit... uneducated. Hate to use that term with you, but I've had a few drinks and my vocabulary isn't firing 100%. For the people involved with the making of this movie, the music is absolutely 100% necessary.

Talkbacker...it isn't the Who, rather the Cliched "What"
by conspiracy
I'm sure Wu-Tang is deep in the Kung Fu stylings, aesthetic...and I have no beef with Hip Hop in general. However, anytime I see Action Scenes paired with Rap (about 85% of the time)...it knocks the film down a notch, it borders on being a stereotype these days. That trailer would have been even better with perhaps some Chinese influenced instrumentals...
-

It isn't ignorance Vader, rather the expectation of better...
by conspiracy
you'd think that an artist who idolizes these types of films would step outside and look at the work and think to himself..."Ya know...my music simply doesn't fit this aesthetic..." It has gotten to the point that action scene=Hip Hop and that's kinda sad for both art forms...that nobody is thinking original, or outside the stereotypical box. But hey...if ya'll dig it..more power too ya...just don't mind me when the fists on screen start flying, the hip hop starts pounding... and I'm in the back of the theater screaming "Motherfuckers PLEASE!"
-
Franklin that is...and he don't give a good god damn if the hand forking them over is black, white, brown or blue. This fucker will draw a wide male audience...., you know we'll all see it. Just loose the cliched, overused, run into the ground Hip Hop...

Put that shit in there with my rant too... another action music choice that is as stale as fuck...
-
by the level of ignorance most of you talk-backers have.. even those of you whos opinions ive sided with numerous times, those of you who regularly post in these talk-backs, i figured the lot of you smarter than that but boy was i wrong. i have been visiting this site daily for about six years now and though i usually choose to remain quiet, im appalled by what im seeing in these comments. that being said, im glad to see RZAs project finally seeing the light of day, it hopes to be as grand as a modern day authentic kung fu film should be and im sure it will see that brand of success.
-
""Ya know...my music simply doesn't fit this aesthetic..." " No. As far as he is concerned, as far as he has always lived, his music has always fit the absurd genre that is ridiculous Kung-Fu movies. Just look at his group's name! And as far as this movie is concerned, the music fits for this wayward viewer. Its not meant to be a classic, its not meant to be an Oscar-winner. What would fit better, in your opinion? Classical music? An original piece by Yo-Yo Ma? 70s Funk?

Ice T started this shit...and at the time it was novel and fit the film. But from then on it has just gotten out of hand...generic radio pop music for every fucking trailer... action=Hip Hop or bad Rock, Romance=Angst ridden female acoustic guitar playing chick or stubbly sensitive male singer, Teen Film=pop tart of the moment... All I want is a Proper fucking Score...something as original as the film I'm watching.
-
Come on you know what I mean. I'm talking about CG. Flying through the air and BS like that. Of course its all choreographed but id rather watch a martial arts movie with something that looks real rather than this cartoon horseshit. Just sayyin is all

June 29, 2012, 12:24 a.m. CST
Looks ridiculous, but appropriately schlocky for the cheese it's trying to update. Oh, and an awful lot of nerds trying to show their street cred here.
by kevred
Hip hop's not a secret club, guys. Everyone knows about it. You're not in possession of any cool-guy secrets, if you ever were. It jumped the shark many years ago now. This looks pretty stupid, but it does look like an appropriate update to the chop-suey cheesefests that your average old pulp-kung-fu sort-of-classic films represented. Once the hypnotic spell that the digital effects casts over a bunch of video-game-playing morons wears off, we'll remember what made the old films such preposterously good fun, and why this is just a cover song with slick production. But if it's a labor of love and remembers to be fun, then no harm no foul.

ME as a kung fu fan first and foremost. While I do love those early Wu-Tang records and RZA's soundtrack work, I think I just understand where this is coming from better than you do if you are just a "general viewing audience" member. talkbacker...I meant Action Scenes in Trailers...or even trailers in general...
by conspiracy
They save the actual song till the credits...usually. I'll admit my 85% is an ranting talkback exaggeration..., but you know what I mean...Action=Hip Hop or Nu Rock. And it is PURE marketing...the music has Zero to do with the scene, it is a pre-made pop song stuck in a film to make it seem "Edgy" to the suburbanites sitting there, or to pander to some targeted demo identified by marketing...its cliched. You telling me you haven't been sitting there watching trailers and some out of place music...not just hip hop... come screaming at you? Snippets of everyone from Jay-Z to fucking Korn. I'm sure you can Google it....try searching for Rap Songs in Movie Trailers...I'm sure you'll get hits... Fuck...even Green Hornet had fucking Hip Hop in the trailer...and the metal dudes have made careers out of being a film trailer cliches.

On the other hand I always did like the `special weapons` Kung Fu movies. This is nothing like those either. It`s maybe a more violent version of Once upon a time in China. Should be some eye-popping fun though. Give me One armed Boxer 1 and 2 as a double bill any day.

by Wcwlkr
I'm just saying, I know that due to the Matrix you can have people look like Kung Fu Masters. But I'm sorry I see the Rza doing Kung Fu & it just makes me laugh. It works in context of a Music Video Rza, but in a feature film. I would've preferred Michael Jai White, or Chiwetal Ejiofor. Someone I can actually believe could do some Kung Fu. It looks interesting, and yes STOP WITH THE CGI Blood. Ninja Assassain & The Expendables should've taught people this lesson. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed both of those for the pure carnage of it. But it would've looked a hell of a lot better without the CGI blood.

- "Play some rap music."
-
I don't know who the choreographer is for this, but if they are smart, they got Wo-Ping. If they didn't, and it looks to me more like some total crap like what Tsui Hark puts out, then this will have no redeeming value. But if they have actually got Wo-Ping, or one of his proteges, then I can ignore the stupid music and just enjoy the spectacle. But if someone used the word 'good' and 'cgi' in the same sentence when describing what was seen in this trailer, then, umm NO. In particular, that bit where those straps or whatever they were, were wrapped around that muscle dude, that was just AWFUL. I mean, Wolverine awful.
