John Ary Questions THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN And Discusses His Top 5 Proposed Superhero Reboots!!

Top 5 Proposed Super Hero Reboots

John Ary here with a few thoughts on rebooting our favorite super hero films.

The Amazing Spider-Man will be releasing here in the states on July 3 and I have yet to talk with anyone who is truly excited to see it. It's not an issue with the quality of the movie or the choices for the leading roles. Rather, it seems like the film's origin story is more of the problem. Do we really want to see Peter Parker's genesis as a crimefighter... again? After all, it wasn't that long ago that Sam Raimi capped off his Spidey trilogy (2007). If we're going to reboot heroes, let's do it right, with characters who haven't been mined to death and stories that are fresh. We have stacks of comic books and reels of film to search for these grand protagonists, so why limit our exposure to only a certain handful of properties?

This got me thinking... Who are some of the heroes that I would like to see get a big budget modern-day reboot? I compiled my top 5 do-overs into the following video:

  • The Flash (I know, not a movie, but still me top choice) I loved the TV series and wish it had gotten another season. A reboot would be a lot of fun. Lois and Clark I would like a departure from Smallville, a TV show going back to what made the first season of Lois and Clark special. The chemistry between Cain and Hatcher was terrific. Routh and Bosworth were like bad acting robots. The new Superman reboot where he can't fly but jumps like John Carter seems like a mistake. I don't like the new costume either.

Ooh,Danger Diabolik is a tad too sacred for me.....

    by SobchakSecurity

I totally agree people should know this more,it is a super cool movie, overlooked, not campy at all, they spoofed it on mst3k once, yeah,a bit ahead of its time,it recreated panel by panel shots way before sin city,300 and watchmen, all without cgi,and is one of the most lively, colorful, comic book movies ever. And I think he's more an anti-hero than super hero haha. That being said,it would have to take a REALLY convincing creative team to make me go,"Ok,yeah, this sounds awesome/like it could work." But that's a longshot I think. Flash Gordon would be cool. But I think the unfortunate "failure" of John Carter has put a cap on any golden age pulp adaptations. Shame, cause Carter was a really good and beautifully shot movie. I mean, part of the problem there was people's lack of familiarity with the character/series. I mean, how many in that 12-25 age range know Flash Gordon? What company made Eliminators? I mean, was it DC,Marvel? Today I learned that MOTU Part 2 was turned into Cyborg, hah! There was some talk of them doing a new MOTU a few years back with John Woo at the helm. Don't know what happened with that. Oh,the MOTU movie,so bad,yet so good. I think you need to appreciate just the fact that you'll probably never see something made like that ever again. Batman's a little too obvious, and too soon.I mean, really? Obv after Dark Knight Rises,I'm guessing and won't be surprised that they'll be starting a new series in due time. I mean, with the upcoming Justice League movie, that's gonna happen. Plus yeah,It's Batman. A few I would like to see relaunched are,and I know 2 of these are universally hated by almost everyone, but just here me out..... Swamp Thing-Great character and story with alot of creative potential. As long as they don't turn it into an environmentalism allegory, this could be great. Esp if they adadpt Saga Of The Swamp Thing. This could be both a compelling drama and awesome monster movie if done right. As a matter of fact,of the top of my head,I could definitley see Guillermo Delo Toro doing this. Steel-Yes,I know what you're probably thinking. Yes,I know how bad the last one we got was. And yes,it might be too late to do this,I mean, that story cycle was so long ago, would people care? Possibly. But I think there's some potential there, and just that the last one we got was so shitty,I think it might be time for a re-do. Spawn-See above as to what ou're probably thinking. I know the problems with this, shitty cgi aside. I actually thought this was decent, despite its flaws. And again,it might be too late for this one.

    Alien Legion and X-Men

    by bubcus

Having not been a movie yet, I would love to see Alien Legion brought to the screen. The comic has huge potential. I do agree about Masters of the Universe, I was one of those kids thinking 'what the hell is this?' But I think X-Men will need a good reboot down the road, along the lines of when Marc Silvestri and Chris Claremont were paired up. Uncanny X-Men issue 247 was the first issue I read and I was awed by the story and characters with Rogue quickly becoming my favorite. I commend what has been done with the current X-Men films but they didn't measure up to the stories that got me hooked in.

    MY 5...

    by John Johnson

Well...I want another Blade...but not a reboot really. Wesley did an AWESOME job and I want one more because three was lacking. so otherwise....they are as follows. 5. Swamp Thing - I love the old ones...but it's time to bring him back in a modern light. 4. Hellblazer - Constantine wasn't bad...but there was more that could be done with that character. 3. Hulk (W/ Mark Ruffalo) - Man he was perfect in The Avengers...let's get the ball rolling on his own film....No origins needed. (Maybe he can have an other hero or two show up and d a team-up or something.) 2. Daredevil - I actually enjoy the first on the whole. Ben Affleck is fairly good and even MCD is a decent Kingpin. I just want a little darker Davedevil and a real feeling of the Kingpin. Little to no Electra in it please. and 1. Spawn or Fantastic Four - I like both movies....but the Villians in all of them are lacking. Spawn had some cool effects for it's time, MJW as Spawn was pretty good and John Leguizamo was great as the clown. This just needs to be realized with a decent budget and script from the source material better. The core 4 in the FF was great. I like all the actors...even Jessica Alba...though she was the weakest. But again...the villians came out all wrong...Doom should have been a HUGE character...almost bigger than the FF. He didn't have the right feel at all. The Silver Surfer was alright...but he should have had a bit smaller role and they should have dealt with Galactus more...and only shooed him away. Oh...and Galactus should NOT have been a giant space dust cloud. He has an iconic look....you can do it Hollywood! Those are mine anyway.

Too soon to reboot batman, but new Spider-man was needed

    by matchesmalone2380

So the main complaint was that it was too soon to reboot Spider-man after Raimi's Trilogy, but it's ok to reboot Nolan's Batman? WTF! Nolan's Batman is great. Like Raimi's Spidey #2, the second film is far superior to the original. It's dark, but shows that Batman can be a detective and a bad ass fighter. The villains are great (Ra's, Joker and soon Baine) and truly test Batman. Two face shouldn't count since, he really wasn't Batman nemesis in Dark Knight. Sure, Bale's Wayne/Batman is a little rough (especially the voice) but compared to Clooney's, he should get an academy award. Batman itself doesn't need a reboot in the next decade. Unless Dark Knight Rises is a complete cluster, which it doesn't, it does not need a reboot in the next decade. The only other way we need to see Batman is with Superman and the Justice League. The reboot was needed for Spider-man after #3 should have been called Peter Parker: whiny bitch pretending to be a bad ass. It was a mess and needed to be swept under the rug. I loved Spidey 2, but #3 ruined what would have been a great superhero trilogy. What really spoiled it was that the main complaint everyone has of #3 was that it had TOO many villains! Venom sucked, Sandman shouldn't have been a sympathetic villain, and new goblin (Harry) should have done us all a favor and blow himself up at the very begining of the movie. Now if 3 poorly conceived villains is too much for the audience, then how is a director ever going to show us the Sinister 6? I'm ready to see the new Spidey (about time they showed what happened to his parents. where Raimi's didn't) and see Spidey be funny, and not sulky. My top five superhero reboots: 5) Green Lantern (in Justice League team up form only, not solo) 4) Daredevil (No elektra or playground fight). Crossover with Black Widow if possible. 3)Fantastic Four (Chris Evens redeemed himself big with Captain America, and Thing needs to be hulk sized, not smaller than Sue storm) 2) Ghost Rider (Nic Cage. Nuff said) 1) Punisher (it's been tried three times now, and neither were good.)

Any of these would make for great live action projects: M.A.S.K (no, not rocky dennis but the super cool alternating vehicles) Mysterious Cities of Gold (fantastic story that could be spread over a trilogy) Thundercats (one word: "Cheetara") Visionaries (3D animal totems beating the shit out of each other? Sure, we'd rather not start all over again with an origin story, but I am thoroughly excited about Marc Webb's take after his The Amazing (500) Days of Summer, especially after Capone's glowing review. X-men needs a reboot NOW

    by Mysterious_Volvo

in the same way that the spider-man movies were becoming worn, 5 movies on and the x-men franchise is surely stale. It can't alter the tone in any significant way so as to make it compete with the Marvel universe that Disney have got. Its just so toned down and muted. The effects are often crap. They need to go bigger. have sentinels busting in all the time. Have time travel. Other more interesting characters, follow closer to the comic books. And not in the kitch first class way. lets do it properly this time.

    by Deano316

The Mask doesn't need rebooting, just needs a sequel. Love to see a new movie about The Flash, Flash Gordon however can f**k right off. No need to reboot Green Lantern either, would benefit from a decent sequel however (off Earth). as good as He-Man could be, I'd rather see a Thundercats live action movie. Couldn't watch Blade with anyone other than Snipes so that's a write-off. Incidentally, what's happened to Hellboy? Surely there needs to be one more movie to complete the Trilogy?

    Reboot Batman? Noooooo

    by tonyr

Since when should perfectly good franchises be rebooted? Assuming Rises doesn't suck, what would be the reason to reboot? You only do that if a franchise has A. Not had its origin told on screen i.e. Batman (the first time), Bond, Star Trek or B. Hit a creative dead end i.e. Batman (the first time), Bond, Star Trek I think you all get the picture. Rebooting worked for those three because of very specific reasons. But now reboots are becoming like sequels and remakes, studios are making way too many of them. Spider-man? We've seen his origin done, and done pretty well. No need to retell it, but here they are with ASM pretending nobody remembers a ten year-old movie that broke box office records.

    Batman Beyond

    by tonyr

If you're going to continue Batman after Nolan, use his continuity without having to follow the rules of that universe (crime film realism, etc). Make a Batman Beyond movie, but not a strict adaptation of the cartoon. Set it 20 years in the future, but use the Gotham from the original comics/animated series (with all of its crazy gothic glory, it was semi-futuristic anyways). Also, use villians from the original rogues gallery that were too unrealistic for Nolan's present-day Gotham. I know it'd be blasphemy to fanboys to see Terry McGinnis fighting Poison Ivy and Clayface, but I think it'd be a cool way of combining Beyond with the original Batman without returning to square one.

Take the Chaykin/Helfer/Baker incarnation from the late 80s, give those gentlemen the respective script-writing and story-boarding, and you have the most astonishing possible Superhero franchise of all time. Then spinoff Justice Inc and Shadownet into their own properties and you make billions without raising a sweat. Do it, Hollywood, do it now!

by the dolphins are in the jacuzzi

You are a master hipster. Underground cult '60's flims less than 1% of the population has heard of? Check. Mainstream kitch? Check (In fact, the He-Man choice was inspired; Flash Gordon, on the other hand, might have been a bit too obvious, but I'll cut you some slack). My only reservation was when I heard "Batman." I thought, "How's he going to get out of this hipster quagmire?" What followed next was truly inspired: a fanfic video of Batman and a foreign language B/W Batman '60's Batman video (which I can only guess have a combined total of less than 1000 views on YouTube) chosen as your all-time favorite Batman onscreen representations. Amazing. Bravo, Mr. Ary, bravo. You have won AICN's "Hipster of the Week Award," which includes: a pack of American Spirits, a case of Pabst Blue Ribbon or Lone Star (your choice), a $25 gift certificate to Whole Foods (I hear they're having a sale on organic veggie burgers this week), and two tickets to next year's Pitchfork Music Festival. And let me just say, Mr. Ary, you have truly earned it.

Batman has become Iron Man in black...needs reboot

    by squirtloaf

I wanna see the early '70's Neal Adams era Batman...half James Bond, half Sherlock Holmes, half Bruce Lee (wait...).<br><br><br> No love interest, (unless they are part of the STORY, like Talia), and most importantly, no bulletproof armor.<br><br><br> This was a COOL Batman. He didn't need some ridiculous body armor~that was the whole point.<br><br><br>By the time you got the idea to shoot at him, he had taken your gun and was shoving it up your ass. THAT is what made the character scary...he was just *that* far ahead of everyone else.<br><br><br> ...so yeah...give me a Batman with skill and intelligence instead of armor and gadgets.

Masters of the Universe\He-Man could be made into an epic movie. As for the old B-flix, they're not established superheroes. Were any of those ever a comic book? "My Top 5 proposed movie reboots" would have been a more appropriate title.

Not a reboot, but a prequel to Burton's Batman

    by amrisharmpit

It would cover the earlier sightings of Batman mentioned by Knox. It would keep the look and continuity of the Burton-verse prior to the '89 film, where the Joker is the killer of Bruce's parents, Carl Grissom is the leading crime boss, etc. A noir detective story - just Batman going after gangsters and regular bad guys. We'd finally get to meet Johnny Gobs.

I agree with one of those. Megaforce. But I don't think it's worthy of a feature length movie. Trey Parker and Matt Stone basically remade it with puppets, "Team America: World Police". I would like to see a live action Megaforce TV series on Adult Swim, 12 glorious minutes per episode.

Agreed. It's not that the Spidey reboot looks low quality or antyhing. But... who cares? I know quite a few people who are going to see it (I'm not one of them), but none of them - NONE - are excited about it like they were about Avengers or the new Batman film. It's almost like every Spidey fan is having to watch it out of necessity (and in the hopes they didn't fuck it up). I *might* be excited about it if it wasn't an origin story again. And I *love* origin stories. They're my fav. But this was unnecessary. Ugh.

Sure, the He-Man cartoon from the 1980s doesn't hold up well. But the lore is far from "wretched". Over the decades it's been refined and improved thru comics and whatever. The lore behind He-Man is actually pretty fucking cool. It's just that the 80s cartoon is sub-par (remember it was made for small children).

Seriously, Masters of the Universe was PAINFULLY bad.

    by animatronicmojo

And I think Robot Chicken has said all there needs to be said about it. <P> And yes, F*** all these re-makes, re-boots, and shoe-horned re-treads of mass produced crap-fests. <P> Having said that, here are my personal picks (in no real order of preference) for Top Ten Comic/Fantasy Properties Yet To Be Done And/Or Done Well That I Might Like To See, If Done Well, Although It Is Incredibly Unlikely: <P> 1. The Dark Knight Returns (incl. Supes/GL etc... Mickey Rourke gets my vote) <P>2. Silver Surfer / Galactus (Marvel's very best and most spectacular origin story, yet unfilmed) <P>3. Fantastic Four (with gravitas this time, i.e. great cast and script, please) <P>4. Akira (if set in JAPAN and actually followed the goddam books!) <P>5. Micronauts (if based on Bronze Era issues 1-20) <P>6. Star Wars (Yay, a bolde and epic five millennium timeline was thus established, and all I got were these lousy Clone Wars) <P>7. Fist of the Northstar- Seems like a natural for Tarantino and/or Miike, no? <P>8. Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron (Not the "User Friendly" Hollywood version, but the exact story in Eightball #s 1-10- David Lynch coaxed out of semi-retirement by giant bags of cash to direct.) <P>9. Hard-Boiled Defective Stories (this one might need to be animated, but only by breaking all the rules.) <P>10. Dragonball Z (although, essentially, it is unfilmable). <P> So, what have we learned? Well, maybe that comics and graphic novels are actually a superior medium for telling fantasy-based stories and adventures than bloated over-budgeted, over-hyped, under-written formulaic Hollywood movie projects.

    Batman reboot/DC Films

    by JerryAurora

I am actually amazed that so few of you remember that when Nolan made the deal to produce the Superman reboot, that he also agreed to produce, but not direct, the Batman reboot that will be coming in a few years. Warner Bros is desperate to move on their Justice League movie, so thats why the Green Lantern sequel is already moving forward despite its luke warm reception last year. So GL sequel, Man of Steel, and the Batman reboot will all tie into the JL film they just hired a screenwriter for. I love AICN, but sometimes if you read about the business side of stuff over on Deadline, you'll learn more about what's coming down the pike regarding these superhero films.

    Reboot vs Remake

    by jazzdownunder

Seriously, from someone supposedly "in the industry" I would expect some better distinctions to be drawn. 1 film does not a series make, and re-doing such a film is a reMAKE not a reBOOT. If the intention is to use the remake to kick off a new series then great, but that's still not a REboot. It's just a BOOT. FFS So taking the 5 suggestions ... DANGER DIABOLIK - Austin Powers pretty much went there already, surely ? ELIMINATORS - was an homage (read: rip-off) of a hodge podge of genre movies already. Yes it is gloriously, beautifully bad but if it was any good then it would have no reason to exist at all. FLASH GORDON - this is the only one on the list that I would like to see remade, but after John Carter I think we can forget any chance of that any time soon. MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE - the first that could really be considered a "reboot", but myself I have no interest. Good cartoons do not necessarily make good movies. BATMAN - really ? So what if it can be retold any which way you like, we haven't even finished the current series and already you want to see it rebooted ? Sheesh. Setting aside the "reboot" objective, the 5 super hero movies I'd like to see MADE (remade/rebooted/created/whatever) would be: - KING OF THE ROCKETMEN - THE SHADOW - FLASH GORDON (see above) - THE TICK - CAPTAIN CAVEMAN

John Ary... You actually still have a post about movies after this!!?

    by ColloquiallyBorn

HOLY CRAP! ... "The Amazing Spider-Man will be releasing here in the states on July 3 and I have yet to talk with anyone who is truly excited to see it." Ok, first off, most of us we're also pissed at the new origin movie AGAIN.. But in light of what Sam Raimi did to Spider-Man by giving him the organic Web Shooters that most fans yelled and screamed about, if this movie was going to use non-organic web shooters, they had to do a reboot all the way back. Where people, at least I think, became non-responsive about the movie is when we all saw the new costume and the slight yet major changes they did, they thought that if they could mess up the costume, they could also mess up the story. Raimi, he got the costume right, but not the actual story of Spidey. Spidey 1 and 2 worked, but weren't perfect, 3 was just a failure.. Yet everyone I talked too who have now seen the trailers suddenly changed their minds saying "Ok, so the costume is different, but it seems they finally got Gwen Stacey in there as the actual first fling for Peter, and they did the web-shooters actually work! This looks like a good way of doing a reboot! Trying to get some of the actual original story in there, with a hint of that story line about Peter's parents leaving him with Ben and May!" .. So I don't know who you're talking too, but damn.. You must be in Mongolia or something right now.. Then the films that you feel should get a reboot.. Seriously??? Only 1 movie in there should have even been done in the first place (Batman) with the rest are crap characters that were made... Flash Gordon has been made so many times without success beyond 1955 that at one point, studios actually saw that another one would be to just go to Chapter 11 .. And I'm not talking about a book or a script!.. Hell even the tv series got shut down after someone realized that the show's ratings were actually based on the family of the actors, Studio heads and a lonely guy that fell asleep and didn't turn off his tv before it went on air.. Danger Diabolic!?!?!? WTF!! Eliminators!%!% Are you doing drugs? "Cyborgs kick ass!" .. And you have lost your mind??.. I'll give you a point for the Masters of the Universe. While not great and off base to the actual story line in the cartoons, it was an attempt that was poorly executed. A reboot could be tried out.. But even then.. Not a great movie idea.. Then you mention Batman/Dark Knight.. Ok wait .. You also said that Schumacher's vision of Batman could've worked? .. Seriously? The vision that basically killed off the franchise for many years could've worked.. You have got to be kidding me right??? Dark Knight is too dark and depressing.. Ok ... You need to step away from any and all theater.. You have no clue at all what makes a success and a story work. Batman needs to be dark.. That's how Burton brought him to the screen and made it a success (while not perfect he still got superhero movies back on screen after so many years of hiatus because he left behind all the flashy colors and bigg "WHOOP" ballons), then Schumacher destroyed it by putting an actual street gang dressed up in freaking glow in the dark clothes.. You know how fast a gang like that would last in NY?? About .9 seconds... And that's against the Kindergarden Gang from distrcit 22... Schumacher thought they looked mean.. People actually laughed when they saw that vision and decided that this was getting ridiculous... Seriously you should really reconsider what you write or post on YouTube.. Oh and lay off whatever you are taking, it doesn't suit you.. This is the worst article (and video) ever on this site..

I'm pretty good with Batman movies, and nothing is wrong with the current movies. So aside from Nolan not making another there is no reason to REBOOT Batman. Just have him appear in a JLA film, no new film is needed. And I'm really surprised you didn't mention Doc Savage (1975) and The Shadow (1994). Two sub-par movies of great potential. Reboots I want to see: -Supergirl -The Fantastic Four Then just use some new characters: -The Flash -Aquaman -Teen Titans -Legion of Super-Heroes -JLA -Alpha Flight -Powerman -Black Panther

    by King_Knut

The Phantom. So much promise, so poorly executed. The Billy Zane version was trying too hard to be Indiana Jones, which is ironic given that the worst Indy movie, 20 years later, featured the same MacGuffin as this film. Definitely could do with a reboot. The Rocketeer. Yes, the original was a perfect movie, but I think a contemporary spin wouldn't besmirch the original, and would re-introduce this forgotten classic to a whole new generation (on a side note, exactly the same applies, but more so, for Soylent Green). You could get Connelly and Dalton back in some fashion, and the effects would be much better. Lex Luthor. Yes, I know, not a superhero. Still, this guy needs his own movie, as he's never been done properly on film and he is, frankly, much more interesting than his Kryptonian nemesis. In the comics, at any rate, he has traditionally acted out of a craving for the love of the whole world, to be seen as a saviour. He could be made highly sympathetic and a very tragic figure if done properly on film, with Supes as the unwilling antagonist in his story. I think there's a FANTASTIC film to be made with Lex as the main character.

    Nooooooo reboots!

    by Bob

Seriously...Spiderman takes the cake. I'm all for bringing the mainstream audience into the comic/sci fi genres, but we reeeeally need to be careful not to upset the wagon. Too many reboots chasing the almightly dollar will turn more fans off than on. My fear is reboots just water down the genre all together, soon instead of the all time best selling greats like SW, Avengers, Indiana Jones, Avatar, etc. we'll just start to churn out mediocre films like Green Lantern. We've come too far to receede. Right when comic book and sci fi movies are getting the respect they deserve...please don't let Hollywood come in and crush it. I can't take another Meryll Streep or Julia Roberts movie, I just can't. I think too many out there would like to see the genre fail, don't let it.

Calm down. Dude gave his opinion. I don't agree with all of it either, but I don't feel like punching the guy or anything. Fuck.

Also, "Diabolik" was supposedly inspired by "Fantomas"...

    by Jon Forbing

so how 'bout a "Fantomas" movie? That would be awesome! Plus, I think they tried a couple in France in the fifties or something, so technically a reboot!

Thanks for not saying Buckaroo Banzai. Horrible movie

    by happybunni

Good actors, just terrible terrible film. Except the little dance at the end. Masters of the Universe was mostly terrible due to being set on Earth.

    Buckethead...

    by kgreene

Totally agree on Doc Savage. Casting Renny, Monk, Ham and the bunch could be a lot of fun. Use WETA's digital files of New York done for King Kong. Go Raiders with it, fun and action packed with a serious edge but not taking itself TOO seriously. Now here's the part where I get shit thrown at me. You gotta cast The Rock as Clark Savage, Jr. You gotta.

    How about The Flash?

    by KelseysNuts

I never watched the television show (early 90s?). This wouldn't really be a re-boot, but I always like the Flash better than most other DC characters.

    Batman, really?

    by Patch

8 films aren't enough? Your list was intriguing until you went with the uninspired Batman choice...
