There's Lots Of Hitchcock Coming To Blu-ray This September!!
The Kidd here...
Start saving your pennies for September, ladies and gents, because there's plenty of awesomeness you're going to want to drop money on to fill out your home collection... and that includes a pretty incredible Alfred Hitchcock box set just announced by Universal as part of its 100-year anniversary celebration.
15 Hitchcock titles, 13 of which are making their first appearance on Blu-ray, make up ALFRED HITCHCOCK: THE MASTERPIECE COLLECTION, which is set for release on September 25 for a limited time, but is already up for pre-order (I'm not sure how limited of a time we're talking about, but, if you want it, I'd suggest jumping on it before you find out you're too late).
The set will run you $299.98 normally, but you can actually grab it for $209.99 (30% off) now off Amazon, if you want to keep some cash in your pocket.
What do you get for your money? Well, in addition to the films, and all their special features, which are listed below, the set comes with a 50-page collectible book filled with "storyboards, costume sketches, correspondence, photographs, and much more."
Yeah, I think I'm going to have to get a hold of one of these come September. I'm sure my family will understand why we're eating a steady diet of Ramen noodles in the coming weeks once they all sit down for NORTH BY NORTHWEST.

Not a big fan of fixing up old effects but Family Plot
by Samuel Fulmer
Could really use a digital clean up of it's rear projection and blue screen shots. I think I'm one of the few that actually likes that movie, but those car scenes are just way too distracting (the ones at the start of the film, and the out of control car scene in the middle of the film).

I find many of Hitchcock's films over rated but liked Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Psycho is probably his best movie. The Birds and North by Northwest are over rated and really lame.

ALL of Hitchcock's car scenes are PATHETIC and lazy - and I think he even commented once how he likes how it looks with rear projection.

If the transfers actually look good, then to me it's worth the price
by Samuel Fulmer
Especially for the "lesser" hitchcock films in this set that poor DVD transfers. I hope Vertigo actually has the original 1958 sound mix too, not the laughably jacked up one done for the restoration back in the 1990's.

Most films up until the mid-1960's used rear projection for car shots
by Samuel Fulmer
Look at those Connery Bond films for instance. It was when Hitchcock. I'm not justifying it, just giving some historical context.
-
Finally. Goodbye, ancient, non-anamorphic DVD. You will not be missed. 'Frenzy' is an underrated gem, BTW.
-
One of my earliest memories of film criticism. I believe it was a TV review, too. Maybe Shalit. Memory is fuzzy, but I just recall how the critic seemed to feel bad about not giving the film a postive review. Was it released after his death?
-
One of my favorites.
-
Because this is being put out by Universal which owns all of these films...except North By Northwest. I think that one got put in there because it's been out on blu ray for a while now. I'm sure at some point Warners will put out an Alfred Hitchcock blu ray set that will resemble the DVD one they did.
-
And was the last film Hitchcock directed. By that point his health was so bad it was a miracle that he got it made. There was another film he wanted to do with Connery in 1979 called The Short Night, but by that point it was more a hope than a reality due to his (and his wife's) poor health.
-
I went into a Hastings in Iowa and found this set mismarked for $34.95 http://www.amazon.com/Alfred-Hitchcock-The-Masterpiece-Collection/dp/B000A1INJE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340740217&sr=8-1&keywords=alfred+hitchcock+collection Naturally I picked it up and thanked the gentleman at the register for ringing me up. Then cried happy tears all the way home.
-
My God. What has the internet created?
-
'Frenzy' is lovely... lovely... LOVELY... **LOVELY!**
-
DAMN STRAIGHT I'm watching it right now as a matter of fact. Solicitor in Pub: We were just talking about the tie murderer, Maisie. You'd better watch out. Maisie, Barmaid: [salaciously] He *rapes* them first, doesn't he? Solicitor in Pub: Yes, I believe he does. Doctor in Pub: Well I suppose it's nice to know that every cloud has a silver lining.
-
Do they honestly think the average person can afford that? When you can buy a computer for that much and download the whole thing, AND own a new computer? If it were half that, I could justify buying it. But just barely. It'll happen, just wait.
-
Notorious (black & white) Rear Window (color)
-
A mess of a movie, but it should look amazing with a good HD video transfer.
-
Nope, crap.
-
And was Joel Rifkin's (serial killer with the highest body count in New York history) favorite movie.
-
Fox owned Hitchcock titles are Rebecca, Lifeboat, Spellbound, Notorious, and the Paradine Case. It's already out overseas, so I'm sure it'll be out over here at some point (just like Rebecca, Spellbound, and Notorious).
-

Yeah I'm with the others, Frenzy deserves more recognition.
by Christian Sylvain
One of Hitchcock's last great films. About time we get a blu ray release for these genre masterpieces. Vertigo's cinematography in particular is gonna be a blast to watch in HD.
-
he directed that modern classic PROMETHEUS dontcha know?
-
becasue, otherwise you're an idiot and you know nothing about film.
-
The Herrmann soundtracks (not "Rear") are always a pleasure. I must say, I find his discarded score for "Torn Curtain" to be a little disappointing, but it may be because I had seen the film several times prior to hearing it in the 80s. I worked at the USC Film Archives then, and was able to listen, long before it was released on CD.
-
The casting really throws me off. I don't know the address at the moment, but there's a great "Lost Hitchcock" web site, covering unmade scripts, or stalled projects.
-
--the set looks great, but the NxNW is the same as the 50th Ann. edition, if that's what you're most/only interested in. Only 16.99 - no ramen needed!
-
" 'Frenzy' is lovely... lovely... LOVELY... **LOVELY!** " scratchmonkey, just you typing that took me right back to the first time I saw Frenzy and that scene...disturbing.
-
Vertigo (obviously) Psycho Shadow of A Doubt Rear Window Rope
-
...forgot Rebecca!
-
Rear projection was standard in hollywood for a long time. hell even some sitcoms today still use it. it was near impossible to move those cameras outside with all the equipment when Hitch was alive
-

My money's going to Bond 50 Bluray Collection, comes out the same time.
by DrPain
-
I'd be tempted, but without Notorious, no way. Ridiculous to leave it out. Easily one of his best. And if anyone hasn't seen Young and Innocent, track it down.
-
You can't tell me there's no-one who has another feature commentary for Vertigo in them.
-
June 26, 2012, 6:46 p.m. CST
for that much scratch, it should be A LOT more films of his. Do they know what Recession means?
by DrPain
-
Rebecca, Suspicion, Spellbound and Notorious should all be on such an enormous set. The fact I'd have to buy North by Northwest and Psycho again while doing without those four titles pretty much kills it for me... especially for $200.
-
You made me laugh out loud, dude. My faves are Rear Window, Shadow of a Doubt, Strangers On a Train, Rope, Dial "M" for Murder and Psycho. I love most of Hitch's movies. I've never seen Family Plot. I don't care for Torn Curtain or Topaz. I'm not crazy about Marnie. Frenzy was his last great film though. True.
-
You are possibly the biggest moron to ever walk the face of the planet.

Fucking HATEHATEHATE this type of boxed-set packaging, with the movies sliding into scratch-inviting cardboard sleeves
by Nasty In The Pasty
Note to DVD packaging people: NO ONE LIKES THIS!
-
Nothing like taking common experience and knowledge of current on the edge effects work and taking the best efforts of film forerunners and pissing on it.
-
Jesus, what an absolutely jaw dropping comment. And to think, the kid probably considers himself a "film buff".....
-
June 27, 2012, 1:48 a.m. CST
Nasty, I hate this kind of packaging too, but Blu-Rays are
by Dingbatty
fairly resistant to scratches.

"scratchmonkey, just you typing that took me right back to the first time I saw Frenzy
by buggerbugger
"...and that scene...disturbing." Creepy, isn't it? For my money, it's far more disturbing than many a horror film trying to disturb audiences with gore, bloody wounds and violence. That tracking shot with the camera POV reversing out of the room, down the stairs and into the busy street outside gives me chills every time I see it. Absolutely brilliant.
-
June 27, 2012, 8:50 a.m. CST
dingbatty, yes, Blus are hardER to stratch than regular DVDs, but hardly 100% scratch-proof
by Nasty In The Pasty
I have a number of used Blus in my collection where you can see thin scratches, and that HIDEOUS Kubrick Collection packaging seems designed specifically to mangle the discs every time you take them out. I just don't get why studios package multi-disc sets like this, as anyone willing to plunk down $200+ dollars is probably going to be the kind of person who will be super-anal about the condition of their collection.
-
June 27, 2012, 9:48 a.m. CST
I think the packaging looks great. That said, I would love to see envelopes for the discs to protect them from the cardboard sleeves.
by SergeantStedenko
That said, if you are careful there is no issue with the cardboard scratching the disc. That said, we've all had those moments of drunkenly handling a DVD or CD at 3 O'clock in the morning only to wake up to find a scratched disc with a million greasy fingerprints.
-
I love Rope!!! ... and I want this set.

kenny8: Yeah because to be a "film buff" you need to agree with what everyone else says is good right?
by MENTALDOMINANCE
-
June 27, 2012, 2:59 p.m. CST
sunwukong86: Shitty, lazy rear projection was never a necessity and many films made even prior to Hitchcock's stuff were done properly with a camera mounted on the car.

It's like idiots who argue that CGI is necessary because it would be (gasp!) dangerous or require thought and planning to do it real.

June 27, 2012, 3:01 p.m. CST
North by Northwest is a pointless, stupid film with an over rated airplane scene that makes no sense at all and was done for sheer spectacle alone. The Birds is excrutiatingly bad.
by MENTALDOMINANCE
-
June 27, 2012, 3:03 p.m. CST
MOST SHIT that is popular is over rated. Look at any erra. Look at today - AVATAR was #1 and that film is shit. The masses never choose the "best" films to label "classic".
by MENTALDOMINANCE
-
June 27, 2012, 3:04 p.m. CST
Robert Wise's THE HAUNTING & THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN, Quatermass and the Pit, all the great sci fi from the erra - ALL this stuff is way better than stuff Hitchcock did.
by MENTALDOMINANCE
-
Talk about a laughing stock. "North By Northwest" pointless & stupid? "The Birds" excruitiatingly bad? There's a very good reason you're being laughed at here. And then there's your warped logic that a few sci fi films ("The Haunting"is sci fi?) are "way better" than Hitchcock! I'm just trying to think of a sci fi film Hitchcock made...... No, you're not "hating", you're just making an absolute bloody fool of yourself! ....The drawn out "Andromeda Strain" was so much better than Hitchcock.......Jesus, that takes the cake
