Behold!! A Pissed Off Tyler Perry -vs- A Crazy Ass, Billy Corgan-looking Matthew Fox, In This Interesting Trailer For ALEX CROSS!!
Rob Cohen (director of xXx and the first FAST AND THE FUROUS movie) is helming a new bigscreenification of James Patterson's hugely successful Alex Cross literary character. Cross was previously played by Morgan Freeman in ALONG CAME A SPIDER and KISS THE GIRLS over a decade ago - this time Tyler Perry will take the part, facing off against a very badass and demented looking Matthew Fox (Dr. Jack on LOST).
Sporting 12 producers (!?!?!?) per IMDB, ALEX CROSS arrives in theaters this October. An interesting detail many folks don't associate with Cohen: he was an Executive Producer on MONSTER SQUAD back in 1987, and a producer on THE WIZ in 1978.
Here's our first trailer for the film. I wasn't a fan of KISS TH GIRLS or ALONG CAME A SPIDER, and honestly don't know what an ALEX CROSS film is supposed to look/feel; like, but I actually think this is a pretty cool trailer and it leaves me very curious about the film.
The trailer is HERE at IMDB (officially), and I've also included an embed below...

Given Perry's track record, that looks surprisingly un-gay.
by googamooga
-
... must think he is in a different movie. Also, so many Jackfaces in this trailer.
-
Don't Ever Cross... Alex Cross! HAHAHA It'll be interesting to see how Tyler Perry holds up in a movie that's not a pile of crap
-
I'm not buying Tyler Perry as a sawed off shotgun toting duel pistol wielding bad ass. Not even a little bit. Also, not buying that Matthew Fox is smarter than everyone else in the movie. Maybe the movie would be better with dancing Yeti's in it.
-
. . . barring any crappy dialogue and bad acting, it looked interesting. Man, Tyler Perry is goofy looking. Weird casting that still feels wrong . . .
-

won´t it be a bit hard for the Madea fans to extricate themselves from the images of Perry with lipstick and wig?

-
There is no way TP beats MF in this in a fight, and that's what the trailer leads you to believe. MF looks ripped, though, damn.
-
This shit looks like a bad 90's movie that would have starred Keenan Wayans! I was giggling at some parts! I just can't buy Madea as an action star! The bad guy is way too cartoonishly evil to be taken seriously! There are some good actors in this flick too, why are they in the background?!?! Fuck this! MOOMBA HAS SPOKEN!
-
He's donning the old lady costume to play Nana Mama right?

Gonna take a loooong time for me to wrap my head around that!
-
He would have been perfect as Cross.....
-
No-one outside of the States has a breeze who he is. He looks like the most uncharismatic black guy I've ever seen in a drama. And this looks like a TV pilot. Not a theatrical feature. Straight to dvd cheese. No thanks...

Jesus, does Matthew Fox have, like, 0% body fat?!
by Nasty In The Pasty
Dude looks like he could take Bruce Lee in a fight.
-
I can see pretty much how the story builds now... what a stupid fucking way to cut a trailer.
-
There was nothing redeeming about it. Parts of it were unwatchable. That dialogue? Dear Lord, if that passes for okay then fuck we've lost our standards. The cliche way he 'profiles' the really bad serial killer who is 'fascinated by pain'.. is 'Ex military... *huskier tone* Special Forces. Judging by his tactics." Hahaha and then "You are sick and twisted" Oh my!! And it just looks cheap. F--

Tyler Perry, Matthew Fox and Edward Burns, and not a single personality to run together between them
by Stegman84
Seriously, I can't think of the last film to have three such zero-charisma leads, even the 'excito-cut' trailer still looks dull as all hell. And directed by captain paint-by-numbers Rob Cohen to boot, yeah, no thanks. I'm utterly indifferent to Tyler Perry, his usual movies aren't for me, so I simply don't care about them one way or the other, and was perfectly willing to give the guy a shot. But man, he just has no screen presence at all. A dull lead surrounded by a dull supporting cast, with a dull and generic 'crazy' opponent, directed by one of the most generic directors of our time...yeah, I'll be passing, thanks all the same.
-
God damn dyslexia.

Seriously... Tyler Perry... WTF?!

As a person tired of see in Perry in Drag I'm intrigued by this
by Wcwlkr
I try not to Hate Tyler Perry. But just because I'm black I don't swallow his shit and say it's delicious. But I do admire the business he's created even in spite of hating the majority of his movies. But I appreciate his hard work & the studio he created. Unlike Spike Lee I don't quite see him as a Minstrel or Sambo. But I really look forwad to seeing him doing something different. And I loved the James Patterson Alex Cross Novels. I thought Kiss the Girls was decent and I hated Along Came A Spider especially in regards to the book. But Cross was a decent book & this looks like a decent flick.

Is this the first time a gay actor was a lead action hero?
by Bodacious_Crumb
-
Don't you remember it being posted here last year - Elba was up for the role, and Perry snatched it out from under him? Most have used his Hollywood clout some how. I have a real hard time buying him in this role. And it took me a while to recognize Fox - I liked him as Jack, but this is how skinny he should have been after a long time on that island!
-
Is it the kids version with Vin Diesel as a furry animal?
-
Patterson would describe Cross as a "young Ali" in almost every book (might have been "every" book, but I stopped reading about 4 books ago). I always thought Will Smith should have done one of these. My favorite book was Jack and Jill.
-
Hahaha. Wow.
-
Roses Are Red still stands as my favorite Cross Novel. I remember getting to the end of that like WTF!!!! Least Favorite had to be Mary Mary I like to pretend that thing doesn't even exist.

I don't think Along Came a Spider or Kiss the Girls were all that great and didn't do enough to really have people dying to see a new Alex Cross movie. But the biggest reason it will bomb is Tyler Perry. He's not a star. He had a bit part in Star Trek, but most people hate his movies and hate him. He needed to do more small parts in other people's films. I have zero faith that he can pull off being intimidating. So you have a movie with a star that most people hate and the majority of his fanbase will not go see this. There's no way this does well. And for Tyler Perry to say the Madea movies aren't comedies, Madea's Witness Protection looks like he went all in with the comedy. Eugene Levy and Tom Arnold in the same movie? Yuck. Can't wait to see Madea Goes to Hell.
-

If I were to watch a movie with Tyler Perry in it, I guess this would be the one.
by Saltboy
And NO, Star Trek does not count.
-
Hate to break the news to you, but... that trailer was nothing but crappy dialogue and bad acting.
-
"Patterson has written 71 novels in 33 years....In September 2009, Patterson signed a deal to write or co-write 11 books for adults and 6 for young adults by the end of 2012" I suppose that deal includes slapping his name on other people's work and getting top billing on the cover.
-
ok, it was "Ma Dukes" but everyone knew who McGruder was making fun of..
-
I'm down for that shit. And yes, i am extremely racist.
-
Is Tyler Perry the most egotistical person in the movie business nowadays? I say that because a commercial for Madea's Witness Protection came on, and at the end it says: TYLER PERRY'S MADEAS WITNESS PROTECTION then on the "Coming June 29th" screen, it has in big letters at the top: BASED ON CHARACTERS CREATED BY TYLER PERRY. WRITTEN, PRODUCED AND DIRECTED BY TYLER PERRY. Like holy shit, does this fucking guy love the sound of his own name?!
-
June 26, 2012, 10:38 a.m. CST
Did Tyler Perry bankroll this with his Madea fortunes? Because nobody asked to see him crossover into mainstream films

I tried to watch one of his Madea shows out of curiosity, I didn't much care for it. But I like the James Patterson novels and enjoyed Morgan Freeman's take on the character. I'll give Tyler Perry a chance, and the trailer was not bad. Idris Elba as much as I love the guy, hopefully he's busy working on more 'Luthur'. We can't have enough Luthur...

by Jack Desmondi
Now I don't have to pay to waste 2 hours of my life watching that fat ass Tyler Perry pretend to be a Bad Ass.
-
As the new totally non-sexually threatening black go-to guy. Freeman never had a love scene or even romantic kiss in his entire screen career. And Perry is a blatantly gay cross-dresser. Hollywood has it's finger on the pulse of America. Movie might succeed.
-
June 26, 2012, 11:45 a.m. CST
Physically he's got the look, but they are taking a LOT of license with the book.
by RobRed1
This book comes around the mid-point of his career. There's a ton of back story that gives the reveals an emotional punch. I seriously doubt they can cover it all in a 2 hr movie. And where's his best friend Samson? 7' black cop built like a brick house. Tyler at least comes closer to the look of the character, who is described as looking a bit like a young Mohammed Ali.
-
Judging by that terrible, terrible trailer, it would appear that horribly written drivel is going to make for a horrible movie. Quelle surprise...
-
i actually want to see a movie with Tyler Perry. and i didn't realise that was Matthew Fox until near the end of the trailer.
-
.......but don't blame Tyler Perry. Most of you wouldn't be complaining as much if you had never seen Perry as Madea. But still, one has to wonder how Tyler Perry won the role out of all the possible Black actors available. I suspect it's because of the clout Perry has gained due to the commercial success of his Madea films. At any rate, I'd probably see the movie (on DVD) just to see Perry doing something different.

Merrick i'm not sure what the fuck you mean by saying Matthew Fox looks like Billy Corgan in this trailer
by Russell
I'm assuming you're not a moron and are confusing Corgan with someone else. If Fox resembles anyone here it's De Niro as Max Cady in Scorsese's Cape Fear or Ed Norton in Amer History X. But absolutely, DEFINITELY not Billy Corgan. Movie looks shit btw. Tyler Perry is a fucking twat.

by MoistMuskyCamelToe
and yet I am so totally wanting Matthew Fox to fucking kill everyone. EVERYONE. He's completely wasted on this wast of a movie. Oh and excuse me Mr. Perry, but before you do an action movie you might want to hit the stairmaster a bit you pudgy fuck. You look like opening a Fresca would put you in a cold sweat.

Love that movie.
-
The first movie was a halfway decent adaptation. The second movie was a travesty that completely ruined the book. And that's coming from somebody who is not a stickler for every detail from book to movie staying the same. I don't mind some changes to freshen up the story. But Along Came a Spider almost completely ignored the book. So it puzzles me to see that they brought back the writer of that shit heap to also write this one. The guy has TWO credits, Spider and this one. Spider was completely botched so they bring him back??

Were they going for "generic Hollywood thriller bollocks"?
by buggerbugger
If so, success! I hope their generic Hollywood thriller bollocks trailer spawns zero generic Hollywood thriller bollocks sequels. "Don't ever cross-dress Alex Cross."
-
Considering the book "Cross" is about finally finding out the truth behind the murder of Alex Cross's wife, why does he have a wife in this? And why the hell is in in Detroit?
-
I was thinkin' Taye Diggs, but Idris Elba would be awesome.

and I mean everyone involved in making this movie. Casting the lead from John Carter of Mars would have been a better decision than Perry. Loved Alex Cross movies. Dang this sucks.

by Russell

You forgot the "huh huh" between every third word.
-
You have to give the man some credit for amassing a financial empire and a considerably large following. I have seen a couple of the Madea movies and found them funny when focusing on the comedy. Unfortunately they have a heavy dose of melodrama that creates an very uneven mix. I applaud him for branching out and bet this movie will find an audience. I am not said audience because Patterson's books and the films based on them are pablum for bored housewives. I should know because I was married to one. I gotta admit this trailer was pretty bad and when Perry's name popped up I thought I was watching a spoof.
-

Only know Alex Cross from the laughable radio commercials
by Bass Ackwards
Patterson's books get these radio commercials with a movie voice over guy that are dead serious and laughably bad. That said, this didn't look terrible. I was expecting to think Tyler Perry would be a joke in a the role, but I think he may pull it off, might even have a movie future beyond Madea..
-
that don't have co-writers are the Alex Cross books according to the jackets. Never liked the guys writing style. A chapter a page. It's like reading a novel in shorthand. And what's the deal? "Medea Solves A Murder"? Tyler Perry. Really? Really? Really?

"Considering the book "Cross" is about finally finding out the truth behind the murder of Alex Cross's wife,
by buggerbugger
"...why does he have a wife in this?" From what I remember of the fuck-awful 'novel', Cross's wife was shot dead a good few years ago and the case was never solved. In the present, Cross has had one or two serious girlfriends since then - might even have remarried at some point? - and his better halves have a tedious habit of being kidnapped, tortured or murdered by criminal geniuses trying to prove themselves to be more clever than Cross. During his latest case, Cross realizes that there is a connection between a string of rape/torture/murders and the long-ago killing of his wife. Cue flashbacks to the events leading up to his wife's unavenged killing, blah blah.

My hate of Tyler Perry is solely from an acting/writing/directing standpoint
by Cobb05
I have seen all of his movies. Watch everything. And I know people will say, if you don't like his movies, why watch them. I watch them, so i can give valid points to argue my problems with Tyler Perry. Yes, the guy has found his audience, making movies for them. And as long as he keeps the budgets under a certain amount, he makes a profit. But the guy is a horrible writer and director. Well, horrible is too strong a word. He's a limited writer and director. And my biggest problem is he hasn't improved. He's now split his career into two segments. He makes his Madea movies, which are horrible comedies. He relies on cheap jokes. Farting, dressing in drag, mispronouncing words, overacting. Madea is a step back for real African Americans trying to make good comedies. But now Tyler has branched out into making very heavy handed, melodramatic films. The guy has all the subtlety as a brick to the head. His characters are one dimential. Either all good or all bad. The goos people pray and end up living happily ever after. They basically say everything, because the audience can't put two and two together. And I think Tyler has become so big that he won't grow. He won't learn now to be a better write. He won't try to make more interesting movies. It will take a couple of bombs to shake him up. He was a playwrite. So broad comedy and over the top melodramatic acting works well on stage. You're playing to an audience of people. But with film, you need to play smaller for the camera. Tyler hasn't learned that yet.
-
Alex Cross' Trial is technichaly a Cross book that he co-wrote with someone else, the name escapes me. Not so coincidentally, it's the best of the series, and only features Alex Cross as a sort of narrator relating the experiences of a white lawyer who crosses, hehe, paths with his ancestors when he returns to his hometown on the orders of President Roosevelt, TR, to investigate lynching. Anyone who's gotten even a small amount of entertainment from the rest of the books should seriously check it out. As for this movie, it's a pass for me. I'll check it out if HBO gets it, but otherwise no.
