John Ary here with a quick look at a few action figure lines that are making headlines this week...

Halo 4 from McFarlane Toys

Not only will Halo fans soon be getting a new installment in the video game franchise, but they can also look forward to a new series of action figures from McFarlane Toys. It looks like Master Chief will return to action. Joining him in the first wave of figures are an Elite Zealot, Storm Grunt and a red Spartan Warrior. Also, McFarlane Toys will release a deluxe Master Chief with a UNSC Cryotube and a collectors box set. Look for all of these in August or you can pre-order them here.

The Expendables from Diamond Select Toys

The Expendables toyline is expanding. The first wave of Minimates based on the film one have just recently released to Toys R Us and specialty shops. Now we’re getting word that two new Minimate sets based on the second film will fight their way onto toy shelves this October. The Toys R Us exclusive set features a shirtless Barney Ross, Trench Mauser, Mr. Church and Booker (played by Chuck Norris). The specialty retail set stars Ying Yang, Gunner Jensen, Toll Road, and the new villain Jean Vilain (played by Jean-Claude Van Damme). In addition to the new Minimate sets, a wave of 7-inch scale figures will feature two different versions of Barney (one with and one without his beret), Gunner, and Hale Caesar. All of the figures will be wearing their mission gear and come with character-appropriate weapons and accessories. Look for them in November or you can pre-order them here.

Mirror Universe Kirk and Spock from Diamond Select Toys

Mego never made any Star Trek toys based on the classic episode “Mirror, Mirror.” EMCE Toys and Diamond Select Toys will soon remedy that problem with two new figures based on Kirk and Spock. Both characters feature real cloth costumes in the retro 1970s style, as well as episode-specific accessories and Spock has facial hair! They’ll beam down in December or you can pre-order them here.

Joker 2.0 from Hot Toys

Hot Toys has revealed the face of its upcoming Joker 2.0 1/6 scale figure on the company’s Facebook page. We’re still waiting for more details about this newest version of Heath Ledger’s character, but the company did write this in the caption: “Miss me? I’m now unveiling my real face to you finally… Thanks to the handcraft by chief sculptor & painter Yulli & JC. Hong, my head sculpt looks even more alike to The Joker character! Please stay tuned for more about me soon!”

Utapau Airborne Trooper from Sideshow Collectibles

Two important events happened on Utapau: General Grievous died and Commander Cody received Order 66 to kill General Kenobi. Thanks to his battalion's ineptitude, Obi-Wan escaped. Way to go guys! Now their colossal failures have been immortalized in a new deluxe 1/6 scale action figure. Both the Exclusive Utapau Airborne Trooper with a special 2nd Airborne Company Base featuring the ‘Parjai Squad’ Emblem and the regular edition will cost you $134.99 with an arrival date sometime in November. You can pre-order yours here.

And finally this week, I think every kid would love to get their hands on an Alfred Pennyworth movie action figure. Who doesn't want to play with an almost 80-year old Michael Caine dressed in a black suit? Pixel Dan has the review:

That's it this week. For more action figure news, you can follow my toy blog ArticulationTimes.com on Twitter and Facebook.

    Michael Caine

    by RipperGiles

I'd prefer to have the "Alfie" Michael Caine that gets chicks pregnant and then convinces them to get abortions.

Movie Masters Alfred, eh? That's a real phrase?

    by Steve Lamarre

Wow if crime fighting were up to real geeks we'd be fucked.

Jean Vilain is JCVD's villain character's name?

    by GLENN_THE_TOOL

Seriously? I know Stallone likes to get goofy with his characters' names sometimes (Tommy Gunn, Mason "The Line" Dixon) but come on. That one's just not even creative.

Hot Toys are quite simply the best figures on the market.

    by Michael_Jacksons_Ghost

Everything figure that I have seen released so far is just amazing. People complain about the prices of the figures, but with the amount of detail and likeness of the real life counterparts, I see the prices well justified. To me, Hot Toys don't produce toys, they produce works of art. Not sucking up, just praising Hot Toys on their hard work, and dedication. Cheers

    Hot Toys Robocop?

    by Peter

Any news on the new version of the Robocop toys? I would love a Robocop toy that is the quality of the work hot toys has been able to put out recently.

No word yet on Robocop. I can't imagine just how amazing a Hot Toys Peter Weller would be.

Hot Toys has made me their bitch

    by Inexplicable_Nuclear_Balls

And I love every minute of it.

Um, I wanted an Alfred action figure when I was a kid.

    by frankenberry

Seriously. I had Bruce Wayne and the Batcave, but no Alfred. Really threw off my adventures. I usually just pretended Alfred had gone on vacation - or died.

I'm still waiting on Hot Toys's vagina replica set

    by Christian Sylvain

    "Now with web squirting action!"

Hot Toys are worth every penny.

    by adeceasedfan

I've got Dutch and the Predator and don't regret that purchase a bit. Now if they'd only do a John Matrix with ice cream cone and deer accessories.

  • The Jack Nicholson Joker is also something to behold. Might have to peddle my ass on the streets to pay for it.

  • June 22, 2012, 1:11 a.m. CST

    Michael Gough Alfred please.

    by schreck

That's the Alfred figure I want. And why only 3 characters from Expendables?

  • June 22, 2012, 2:25 a.m. CST

Got the Sideshow Joker DX01 but this looks even better!!!

    by Gareth Holton

I may have to sell a kidney to get that one!

  • You can see the pics all over the web (well, apart from here apparently). Here's a direct link for the reveal of Hot Toys latest 1/6 Joker: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150886128972344.398575.58690437343&type=1 Also, Enterbay is really upping their game this year, and their rivalry with Hot Toys is in full swing. Within hours of Hot Toys full reveal, Enterbay teased their own 1/4 scale version of Ledger's Joker, due for release this year. You can see the teaser pic of that one here: https://www.facebook.com/ENTERBAY If you are a fan and collector of this stuff, time to choose and/or go broke... By the way, no new details on Hot Toys (or Enterbay's) Robocop releases yet. Probably have to wait until SDCC.

    Fuck Heath Ledger.

    by Kyle

Hot Toys Nicholson Joker>Hot Toys Ledger Joker.

  • June 22, 2012, 9:14 a.m. CST

There's another Nicholson Joker in the works at Hot Toys HQ too...

    by Stegman84

...but it likely won't be teased/unveiled until the end of the year, at least, as there are many other pieces in line for production before it, and they want to space out the actual release to be a minimum 18 months to two years from the first Nicholson Joker release. And I have been told that there is a third variant planned for a couple of years down the line after that one as well (securing Nicholson's co-operation wasn't cheap, after all), and then they'll be done with 1/6, but if the planned 1/4 scale stuff sells well then you can expect a Joker Jack at that scale as well at some point. But right now it's all about the modern Nolan Batman film releases, and the Avengers stuff, so that's front of the production line. Expect to see Bane, Catwoman, and a new Nolan Batman release at SDCC, if not teased sooner. Also they want to do a Gary Oldman Gordon, but are unsure if sales will warrant doing so, given that even Dent/Rwo-Face didn't sell all that well for them in comparison to other releases, so there is a worry that Gordon might just be too 'vanilla' at the hot toys price point...even with the planned Bat-Signal included as an accessory. Pfeiffer Catwoman will probably be the next old school Burton Batman related release, followed by Batman Returns era Keaton Batman (complete with alternate unmasked Keaton head sculpt) and then the next Nicholson Joker, followed by Penguin if they can work out the design problems they are having on the short, 'fat suit' wearing true type body that they have been having. Because they aren't sure if they can make the Penguin body work yet I don't think they have even started in on the head sculpt stage on that yet, beyond the sketch and initial design ideas stage. They also have a backlog of other licenses to pepper on through all that as well, though a couple (like movie Green Lantern) have already been officially dropped.
