The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day has got the motive, which is money, and the body, which is dead.
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
I only have a few minutes to get this column posted today, so forgive me for being “Just the facts, ma’am” today.
Today’s image is the last one I’m using from the great Hollywood Movie Stills book put out by Titan and features Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger on the set of In the Heat of the Night.
This is a nice “as they’re working” shot, which I know a lot of you guys prefer over the more posed BTS shots. I love ‘em both, but there is something special to seeing a moment from a well-loved film captured from a slightly different point of view as movie history was being made.
Thanks to Titan Books’ Tom Green for sending this one in! Click to enlargen.

That is just one of many awesome photos put out in the edition of the book Hollywood Movie Stills, which focuses on the art of onset still photography. You can get the book yourself by clicking the below:

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at quint@aintitcool.com.
Come with tomorrow’s pic if you want to live!

where everybody is standing on a box or in a ditch

" I, may, need, a, chaperone"! Sorry, but that new Fiona Apple cd is in my bones right now. Great pic Quint!
-
whats your excuse
-
And HEY LOOK... so that's where they got the idea for those boxes Tom Cruise stands on.
-
Dyersburg, TN. When they visit the large plantation style house, that is in my hometown. It was actually nearly destroyed by a tornado some years back, and looks completely different now but the house is still there. They also shot many of the cotton fields there too.

Not until his performance in "The Jackal" did Poitier top this one.

Just kidding.

"British, you see. If I had a Luger!" Rest in Peace

But has it got QUINT'S HOBBIT SET REPORTS?
by where_are_quints_hobbit_set_reports
Hi, I'm Quint. I have every geek's dream job, being flown to New Zealand to REPORT from the SET of the HOBBIT movies, but you know what? I can't be bothered to compile and post anything. It was just a fine private experience for me. Suck it, AICN readers!
-
I attended a few years ago. I believe it was Cronenberg's Spider. Jewison was sitting in a chair that a woman had put her jacket on to save her spot while she went to the restroom or to get popcorn. When she asked for the seat back or to move down he got pissy with her. I don't even think she got her jacket back until after to film ended. A dick move by him IMO. Still, In the Heat of the Night is a masterpiece.

Hi, I'm daddylonghead and apparently some 30,000 words and two dozen exclusive photos from the set aren't enough for me and I have to post a passive-aggressive entitled talkback. I also seem to not understand that Quint's job isn't just writing about The Hobbit!
-
Apple Box is the set term for the boxes they're on. They come in three sizes full, half and quarter. Steiger is on two halves, Poitier is on a full.
-
Classic film! Gets better with age especially when you understand how ground-breaking it was for its time. Oh, great comeback against Daddylonglegs, Quint! Made me laugh :-)
-
Nice comeback Quint. You're are the best thing on this site, and the BTS Pic of the Day embodies all that is cool about movies, and still some ungrateful prick has to complain. Keep doing the fantastic job you do! (btw, seeing the Jaws 4k remaster tonight, cannot, cannot, cannot wait!)

These seem less cool since they all just started coming out of a book, for some reason

"A hundred and sixty-two dollars and thirty-nine cents a week? Well boy! Sam, you take him outside but treat him nice, because a man that makes a hundred and sixty-two dollars and thirty-nine cents a week, we do not want to ruffle him"!
by Mark Williams
One of the best films ever made.

on apple boxes. It's funny because their short.
-
It's nor because they are short they are standing on boxes, it's to achieve the desired camera angle "cheat"

Movie perfection. I love it when Gillespie tosses the badge to Barney Fife.

Oh yeah! Big shot in town slaps Tibbs, he gives it right back. I love that.

One of the rare shows, like M*A*S*H that spawned a great tv adaptation.
by Grammaton Cleric Binks
I honestly thought it would fail because I couldn't see Carroll O'Connor as anyone but Archie Bunker. Boy, was I wrong.

Not often you see both actors in a shot standing on appleboxes.
by Royston Lodge
Usually appleboxes are used to compensate for a difference in height between two actors. This photo is one of the better BTS pics so far. I love the pics that teach a lesson about filmmaking technique.

QUINT: How many of the pics in that book are instructive like this one?
by Royston Lodge
Like, how many pics are instructive compared to the number of pics that a simply interesting behind-the-scenes celebrity shots? If it's got a shit-tonne of instructive pics, I might have to pick up a copy. If it's mostly just interesting celeb pics, I'll take a pass.

Quint, if I didn't love your existing reports so much, I wouldn't badger you for more!
by where_are_quints_hobbit_set_reports
Jerks like me clamoring for MORE NOW MORE MORE is a consequence of your Hobbit Set Reports being as rich and in-depth as they've been so far. I check the site multiple times a day hoping to see something, anything about the HOBBIT, but especially and most of all your SET REPORTS! They've been my favorite thing on AICN in years. Alas, the reward for doing something well, especially on the internet, is people immediately demanding you produce an infinite additional amount ASAP and getting upset when you don't. So, I absolutely accept your criticisms as valid but... there ARE more Hobbit set reports coming... right???
-
Freakin loved it! The audio was the biggest surprise for me. As with many lovers of the movie I thought I knew this film inside and out....but the audio mix was incredible. Things I never even heard before or just not picked up on. During the Kitner death beach scene, in the lead up, I never even noticed the song playing on the radio before. The Quint death scene had tons more impact thanks the audio mix (I dont even remember it being THAT bloody, but the audio added something I never expected). And the nails down the board Quint intro never sounded so good! Awesome cleanup job on the visuals too. JAWS was the first movie I ever saw / remember as a kid, and all these years later it still gets better.
-
ha ha ha....that's one of the weakest backdowns I've ever seen. You go from all tough guy patronising to kiss ass kid in one post. You don't deserve to read Quints work for being so lame!
-
I haven't got the movie in my collection and its never really on TV here in the UK. Is it worth seeking out?
-
You are spot about JAWS. I saw it on Father's day as my present was a ticket. The audio was so clear that I now understand just how crappy the sound on my old video/dvd copies is. I had never even noticed the part before when Quint is attacked were he digs the large knife into the shark. I had no idea it was even there!
-
I will bully, wheedle, do whatever is necessary to read Quint's HOBBIT SET REPORTS. I don't know where you see "tough guy patronizing." If my post was intimidating to you, maybe install some internet filtering software to keep "tough guys" like me off yer screen.
