Learn What Ain’t It Cool’s TV Critic Thinks Of Adam Sandler’s THAT’S MY BOY & Wes Anderson’s MOONRISE KINGDOM!! Listen And Call In LIVE 8pm PT Saturday!!
This week on “Ask Mr. KERN,” I’ll likely be discussing a bit the latest from Wes Anderson and Adam Sandler.
I’ve also seen the next few episodes of FX’s “Louie,” so that might come up.
And we may be talking about our favorite Kirk/Spock “Star Trek” episodes.
Our special guest this week is Ain’t It Cool film critic Alan “Nordling” Cerny.
The radio show airs Saturday 8:05 p.m. to 10 p.m. Pacific Time.
No matter where you are you can listen to the show LIVE by hitting the “Listen Live” button at kernradio.com.
Best of all, you, constant reader, can join this very nerdy conversation.
The toll-free call-in line is:

Tonight!!
-
...you can learn the secrets of the universe!
-
... just derail the show. Whatever ya want to do!!
-
... will have their voices preserved on the internet! Forever!!
-
Because you will need to have paid your electric bill recently. And your internet provider's bill too...

If you have paid those bills, you be there! And listen!!

Tonight!!!
-
June 16, 2012, 2:07 a.m. CST
It's just like listening to the radio on your computer instead of hearing it over the airwaves on your actual radio!
by L.H.Puttgrass
'Cuz that's what it is!
-
... you may actually hear it on your actual radio.
-
Time for bed.
-
Really?
-
*Cue Roy Orbison's In Dreams.*
-
Zzzzzzzz... *snort* "Sing that shit, Roy!" Zzzzzzzzzz...
-
"Wouldn't you really rather have another THREE hours of bitching about Prometheus?" Zzzzzzzzzz...
-
Lucky. Did it already air in Canada or something, or did they send you a screener? Or both? I thought it was supposed to be back months ago.
-
Savages. :) Seeya tonight!
-
Not sure why. Seeya in St Louie.
-
He looks like my brother-in-law. What does the C.K. stand for?
-
... I have no idea what's going to happen with the show tonight. I'm getting set to host a four hour on-air shift on another station, I haven't had time to see any of the movies this week, I just broke up with my girlfriend, and it's 100+ degrees here in Bakersfield... but it's a dry heat. In a nutshell... I could have a full on meltdown on the air later. Or...I'll just have a sugar free Rockstar and roll with it. Is Batman a transvestite? Who knows...???
-
I enjoy the topics for this show, but you are one of the few individuals that gives credible feedback. Last week someone was trying to describe a character arc. Then went on to describe a couple of scenes. It reminded me of the HBO series "Game Change" where they show Fareed Zakaria make a comment about Sarah Palin. "It is not only that she does not know the answer, she doesn't understand the questions." (something like that) I am fine with folks saying, "I like that movie, just because". Instead of trying to intellectually defend their views and coming off looking foolish. It makes you cringe.
-
Sorry to hear about that. The heat that is. Always nice to get a chance to have a new girlfriend. LOL... No, seriously, sorry to hear that about breaking up. Always sucks. *hug* I'm sure the show will be great.
-
That would have been me, and I agree. I did a shit job of trying to defend my point on the character arc issue in PROMETHEUS. But it's radio. Not a podcast, not rehearsed, not your typical show. It's extemporaneous. Like good radio should be. I thank you for listening and the support, but if you find what we do here "painful"... there are LOTS of other entertainment options out there for you, kind sir. Indulge yourself. Have a wonderful evening. :)
-
His real surname, Szekely, is a common Hungarian surname pronounced SEK-kay. When he was young, he changed the pronunciation to SEE-kay because people always had trouble pronouncing it.
-
So, I'm on air on another station right now. While my co-host is talking I'm flipping around on our t.v. and SPR just strated. Sound is turned down but I could watch this film 100 times in a row, sound or no.
-
Come on...I expect more flamingly moronic Prometheus comparisons from this site.
-
Sure, Herc can go on and on about MAD MEN. And if you didn't like ALIEN3, you are going to explode after listening to tonights show. hehehehehehehehehehehe...
-
I just hope they can sustain it past the pilot. What a great premise. Like a dream.
-
Man, just ended a hellacious 70+ hour work week. I hope I can stay awake. More Prometheus, more coffee, more madness. Save at the Cave.

Of course I'm an easy sell for anything with Submarines in it.
by gotilk
I'm obsessed with the things. I watched the crapfest League of Extraordinary Gentlemen multiple times just for the Nemo scenes.
-
Nap now... fun later. That's what I'm doing. Busy evening for me. Checking mom out of the hospital, bringing her home, making dinner... then basically babysitting during the show tonight with headphones on listening to the stream on my netbook. Should be a blast. No sarcasm.
-
At least for now. Unless I want to call with an old lady yelling GIVE ME A JELLY DONUT and WHERE DOES MY POOP GO??? in the background. Nah, it's not that bad.... but close. She's coming home this time with mild dementia, sadly. They expect her to return to baseline soon, but no guarantees. In the meantime.... constant monitoring. So my personal life just went from a 23 (out of 100) to about a 4. I may work at home, but before I could actually WORK from home. I don't know what I'll be able to do after today. It's all up in the air. Trippy, eh?
-
I feel ya. Life is good. I'm hoping Nordling makes it tonight. I'm sure we'll piss off many talkbackers. I'm sure many talkbackers will piss me off. Just another Saturday night. See you then.
-
"Thanks edwardpenishands, for the info about Mr. C.K. Much appreciated." "Again, thank you, edwardpenishands." Only on the internet.
-
I sympathize with your situation. My grandfather has dementia and has been in the care of my parents for two years. I live across the street and know first hand the care it requires. Sadly his state has gotten to the point where they had to put him in an adult care facility a few weeks ago. -Best ...this is becoming a very sad talkback.
-
Just remember all this stuff is temporary. I think that's what they say. Well, most of it is, anyway.
-
I'm not sweating the gf thing. A small part of a big ass week. These things happen. I'm wrapping up this other show right now. Home for a nap, some dinner, and then to what I love... ASK MR. KERN. Let's light this candle!!!
-
My next door neighbors, who lived there since the 60's, one day got in their car and drove it around town until it ran out of gas and the police found them. That was back in '08 I think. They were like having an extra set of grandparents. Now they are in a home (adult care facility) and I miss them. Take care, man.
-
That was a big part of why I was able to sit through it so many times, them getting the ethnicity right. And what they showed of the ship.... just amazing. I remember coming out of the theater after the first time seeing it and talking to a friend who agreed with me that they should have just made a Nemo movie with that actor and that sub.
-
Thanks. This has been slowly happening for a long time now. But now it feels like the dementia stuck... but we'll see. She's come back from it before, waking up one morning fine.
-
Yeah I hear stories like that a lot. People just... slip. My mom has been getting these infections over and over, and they always give her this mild dementia that she comes back from with antibiotics. This time it's been 4 days of strong antibiotics, IV, and she's still just not quite THERE. I was told by her doctors about 5 years ago that she didn't have much time and so I decided to provide her care. Well, here I am 5 years later. I guess my care was what she needed to stick around. It's a big price to pay, but worth it to me. But after all this time, I'm not sure how much more of it I can take. I've had to put my life on hold basically. I'm pushing to get hospice activated for her so I can get some assistance, but not if it means they stop giving her dialysis. I couldn't watch her die like that. So I have a lot to consider right now. It's hell-ish.
-
see you guys at 8. Looking forward to a couple of hours with my mind off this stuff.
-
everyone.
-
Breathe... in with the good... out with the bad... Everythings gonna be fine... trust me, pumpkin.
-
*eyeroll*
-
Last February I was trying to separate my cat from another cat after mine had got outside. They were make angry noises at each other. I got my cat back inside, but not before the other cat had managed to bite me on the knuckles of my hand. I cleaned it up with hydrogen peroxide and put on Neosporin and a bandaid. Redressed it the next morning and went to work. My hand started swelling before lunch. The doctor said it was "cat scratch fever". Gave me two shots and prescribed antibiotic pills. Had to see him the next morning. The next day I had red streaks from my hand to my elbow. My doctor put me in the hospital. I was on oral and I.V. antibiotics for the next three days. I got bit Sunday night. I got out Friday around lunchtime. I finished the oral antibiotics over the next 10 days. That stuff kills *Gary Oldman voice* EVE-RY-THING in you! I finally shook off the effects of that stuff last month! That I.V. stuff is strong!
-
No coffee stories, I promise. BUT... you should've seen how cute my cat was today... uh, I'll save it for the show...

CARPET CAVE Coming up very soon......
-
All the hair bands tried to toughen up and were revealed as true posers.
-
something you almost never hear
-
I loved it. It's basically a huge, entertaining musical/music video. Sure. But it's a GOOD one.
-
Save at the cave!!! Drink now.
-
and Across the Universe, and Moulin Rouge!, and St. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band... lol.
-

-

-
apostrophes and missing Gs. XD
-
and you spend billions to get there, you'll STILL SAVE MONEY!! That's how good the deals are at Carpet Cave.
-
Tired crap now. But I don't hate it for the gay kisses. I just hate it.
-
but I was born without a tongue. My gf likes that I can't talk but hates I can't go down on her.
-
How about KISS Meets the Phantom Park...hahaha
-
People love to call it overly quirky. But if you grew up overly quirky, it just feels like home.
-
ROFL!!! Oh man. That was classic.
-
I think we're right down the middle with our love/hate of Glee here in the studio. I. Hate. It.
-
"Okay? Okay."
-
And is terrible.
-
I thought it was funny and charming. Louie though... amazing show. The best comedy.
-
That movie gave me a very distinct nightmare as a kid.
-
But not enough to make it watchable.
-
Just get vibrating mini-eggs put in your lips surgically. And use your teeth.... VERY carefully. You don't want to accidentally make her a Muslim.
-
Have we ever met? I think we've been to the same Butt-Numb-A-Thons but I don't remember being introduced.
-
I vaguely remember seeing that as a kid. I also know that as a kid Gene Simmons made me throw up because he spit blood instead of fire and it freaked me out. I don't know if that was the same movie.
-
I have Season 1 on Blu-Ray. Bought it a few days ago. And it's just sitting there... ... waiting for me to put it in the PS3. ...waiting... ...for me...
-
Are you named after Jeffrey Nordling?
-
Mothers taking pills over the puppies? Monsters take patented ostrich torque pumps?
-
Have you seen any upcoming movies we have not yet talked about?
-
How you rock so hard!!???
-
I'll just use peanut butter and my dog...
-
Talkback is where it is. Join the savages.

Welcome to the talkback cage match.

by MisterManReturns
-
Yes! Met you at BNAT.
-
I did not disappoint and still doesn't, but for different reasons.
-
Thank you! Having a good time....looking forward to getting into the mix more & more every week.
-
It's a long story.
-
= zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
-
Not about were-bunnies and actually a pretty good show.
-
Awesome
-
I guarantee you will hear at least one more Carpet Cave hit before the show ends
-
Bravo plaster penis one.
-
Or "When Bug Met Windshield".
-
Whenever a Carpet Cave commercial comes on, drink. Whenever Mr Kern pronounces a celebrity's name wrong, drink. (sorry, man... I love that you do that, it's entertaining, like everything else on the show)
-
Not only was she in both Army of Darkness and Schindler's List, she played the same character.
-
Hahahaha!!! Where did you find that???
-
Song of Ice and Fire technically, I guess. I don't think I could deal with anything that even resembled a Jane Austin book. I'd read Jane Austin if she was the bionic sister of Steve Austin. But that's it.
-
Awesome!
-
But then again, Breaking Bad is coming up pretty soon. wow.... THAT will be some great TV.

How do you find time to make the best show in radio?
-
I'm thirsty.
-
Triple distilled, so I can get triple hammered. Nah, just kidding. But I have taken shots. So I am really playing. Hoping he pronounces Adam Sandler as Adam Schindler accidentally. Still thirsty.
-
going to Master Graphics.
-
Brilliant.

They call them gleeks.

I'm sure is appreciated.

Nordling, the Prometheus sequel is already shot rumor, likely? Y/N
by Shermdawg
-
Hasa Diga Eebowai.
-
NICE one.
-
Urgh. Sorry I didn't remember. I meet like 700 strangers every BNAT.
-
how did the alien egg get on the ship in the beginning? tha queen dropped her egg sack before going onboard in aliens.
-
Your claim was that Pearce was in Prometheus because of the after-the-fact viral TED video. That takes the 'stupid fuck' crown. Thanks for listening, though. Love you.
-
To shoot a sequel simultaneously and keep it a secret? I'm not so sure, but I'd be delighted....

I am honestly curious - how many regulars at AICN...
by MisterManReturns
...don't consider themselves a "geek." I am not - never have been. Yet, I've been here since the beginning.
-
All good.
-
You were great!
-
Numerous interviews and behind-the-scenes pieces have mentioned why Pearce was cast, son. You're telling me that the Pearce was cast to be the face of the viral promotions? He was cast and put in old man makeup for two scenes so they could film a piece of viral marketing three months after production wrapped? You're right, *I* am obviously the one who doesn't know how 'Hollywood' works.
-
The sexy half though.
-
Big love to Herc and Norling. gotilk... you hang tight.
-
LOL!! What's a Postman? jk.
-
You too! See you next week. It was a great show again. THIRD HOUR! THIRD HOUR!!
-
... is a single-word title. You obviously don't know how Hollywood works.
-
THIRD HOUR!
-
FOURTH HOUR!!
-
NOW!
-
Herc - do you have a show? Actually, all of you could do radio...weird......
-
An actual carpet cave. OH CRAP! The stop Obama express is stopping by.
-
it doesn't stop for anything. Not even passengers who want off once they realize that means we get Romney.
-
Back when I was ten years old, in Miami (1972), I would hide under my covers, after going to bed, and listen to my little red transistor radio. Amazing talk shows. Politics, etc. I had NO idea what they were talking about, usually, but I'd listen for two hours every night, my parents none the wiser. Weird.....
-
It's a lot of fun. I look forward to it all week. Sounds pathetic, but I have other things I look forward to. Like.. Getting sunlight for a few minutes. lol Nah, I get out a couple of times a week. I can't really complain. I put myself where I am because I knew that no-one else would do it.
-
It's been a real blast.
-
That's fantastic. Radio's an entire industry that's almost completely dissolved in such a short period of time. I guess one could say that podcasts have taken the spot of all of those now-extinct wild card radio shows but it's really not the same.
-
Yeah, didn't he deliver like, radioactive mail or something?
-
it's just sleeping. HARD. Seriously. Radio will have a comeback.
-
Man, this experience is totally retro.
-
I need to create a CC cocktail.
-
Good show last night guys.
-
I mean, being a shut in means you either haven't seen the movie and are talking out of your ass, or you illegally downloaded it, so...
-
I honestly do not get out much, but still manage to see movies, and spend about 20-30 a month on iTunes. It's usually documentaries, but I also have DirecTV, HBO, etc. I think you can be essentially a shut-in and still manage to pay into the media machine sufficiently to keep the gears moving. Certainly more than *I* paid into it in say... the 80s and 90s. Man, people bitch about file sharing, but we're all paying more a month for entertainment than any generation in history. Go ahead and get a cable package that doesn't approach a hundred bucks. (Internet included usually, but still) Try to get a mobile device to do what it's made to do for less than 70-80 bucks a month. That's insanely more than people have paid in the past, and that's not even including things like Red Box, Netflix, iTunes, etc. The idea that the entertainment industry is struggling because of file sharing is delusional. If they're losing money, it's because they're idiots.
-
We're still paying more than we ever have every month.
-
you want something soft and luxurious, yet will numb and soothe that mouth much like sore feet on a carpet. Hm, I'm thinking Amaretto, Triple Sec, a shot of ever clear, fig arak, orange juice and sprite. That should do it...
-
Sounds tasty. Like I could just wiggle my toes in it.
