John Ary On BRAVE!!

John Ary here with a look at Pixar's new movie Brave. While it's beautifully rendered and has the best feminist lead of any Disney movie ever, an unexpected plot twist took me out of the film. The magic [SPOILER] is so out of leftfield, neither the characters (who run the gamut between kind of generic and really generic) or the audience could possibly prepare for it.

You either go along with it or you check out emotionally.

Brave will release here in the states on Friday, June 22. Special thanks to the Alamo Drafthouse for letting me shoot in their lobby. For more video reviews, features, and exclusive content, check out our Youtube channel and you can also follow me on Twitter.

    Very generic, boring reviews

    by Nervous Energy

There's not an ounce of personality to this guy and his reviews aren't unique or interesting.

  • June 15, 2012, 3:02 p.m. CST

This is no review. You are certainly bigging up "the twist" here.

IS DIsney polluting the Great Pixar recipe

Dissapointed with Cars 2...please dont be 2 in a row.... Difference between Pixar, and ABC/ ABc/Disney is all about money..... Wasn't that way when it was just Disney... Real scary for ABC/Disney/Pixar

Can some one ALERT me to the SPOILER please?

  • I can fucking tell that from the trailers. If that's the twist that pulls you out, then did you not pay attention to the trailers, do you not like magic, or is there something about the execution that is more jarring than what's in the commercials--in other words, could we get a review and not something texted from a smart phone on the walk back to the car?

  • June 15, 2012, 4:25 p.m. CST

    Didn't watch the trailers...

    by John Ary

so I wasn't expecting the twist. Instead of the characters working out their problems, they're forced into a situation that is practically out of their control. I may be in the minority on this one, but it didn't work for me. I would love to go into the plot further, but I don't want to ruin anything for people planning to see it next weekend.

    Wow, this review sucked...

    by nonsensical

Magic isn't something that is just plopped into this movie. It appears in the first sequence of the film. It's also not something that if you blink you'll miss, nor is it a simple macguffin to try and tell the story. I won't tell you all that the movie is amazing... I will say that you should go and see it for yourself. You'll probably see that this reviewer is totally wrong.

So have you seen the movie and feel differently about it than this reviewer? Or are you a fan of magic and Pixar and just want him to be wrong?

And they have been excited for this for a year. I don't think an unexpected twist will ruin it for them. As always, if any flick can make me forgot about my crappy life for 90 minutes, it's worth the ticket price.

I like John Ary, he's an attractive, smart photogenic guy who comes across really well in these videos. I think the video reviews should be a bit longer and more in-depth, but he's exactly the kind of thing this site needs. Stop with the hate and leave the poor guy alone.

  • June 16, 2012, 12:06 a.m. CST

You're a good guy John. You do good work

    by happybunni

I really enjoy how you can tell the truth about a movie, even if negative, while still being nice about it. Harry doesn't have that ability. If he didn't enjoy a movie, he'll still do nothing but praise it. The only time he writes anything negative about movies is when the studios have offended him in some way.

I have seen the movie and I don't agree with this review. Magic doesn't come out of left field. It's an integral part of the film and one that is there from the very beginning. As for the whole Pixar is best thing. I don't think they are, but this film is pretty good. Better than Madagascar 3.

Thanks for all of the comments...

    by John Ary

both positive and negative. I have a feeling my reaction to the movie will be in the minority. I would agree with those that have said my review is kind of generic and short as I have trouble talking about the film without spoiling it. I'm toying with the idea of doing a discussion with spoilers for Friday like I did for Prometheus, but I'm not sure there is enough interest in Brave to warrant it. We'll see how talk backers react to the other reviews throughout the week leading up to the movie's release.

    Feast Your Eyes

    by James Giles

Generic review or not, (how much intrest in a film warrents a half decent review? Who gauges said intrests? Are we talking "Avengers" interest or are we talking "Human Centipede 2" intrest?) I'm still going to take my two girs to check it out when it is released.

  • June 16, 2012, 6:07 p.m. CST

    That was a review?

    by CatVutt

    No. No it was not.

  • ... it's an animated film. I think it's okay to have magic in this. I think it's okay to stretch things. Why bother making fantasy movies if all we do is bitch about anything we don't agree with. I think we're too spoiled of a generation now.

  • June 16, 2012, 6:59 p.m. CST

I like your reviews, but you do have some kinks to work out.

    by starbuck2907

First, this page has "spoiler" alert on it, but the fact that magic is in a children's movie is hardly a spoiler. It's like saying "spoiler" - Prometheus has aliens in it. Second, I like the video reviews, but I prefer the written reviews. Perhaps you could do a bit of both in the future? Maybe a video review similar to the one above, but maybe a rambling aintitcool rambling, stream of consciousness style text review to go alone with it. I'll be taking my niece to see this. Keep up the good work.

    by John Ary

Thanks for the constructive criticism. Very helpful. Several talkbackers have mentioned the need for more text in these articles to go along with the video reviews. I'll start experimenting more with that in the coming days. Also, I think your niece is really going to like the movie. Thanks again for the feedback.

You got two little girls - your life CAN'T be crappy! ;)

  • This review makes me nervous, i've been waiting to see this film, especially with it's draw of a female heroine. What i'm concerned about is that this may be Pixar's first 'flop' and I certainly hope it isn't. I really want to love "Brave" i mean it's got everything a red headed Irish lass (love me some red headed irish girls). Bears, Bows and arrows, the plains of ireland. etc. etc. All it's missing is a nice pint of guinness. Anyhoo. I'll take in the review for what it is and see this anyway in hopes that maybe "I" see something John didn't. THanks for the review John. -Rex
