Ethan Hawke Says Another Linklater SUNRISE Movie To Shoot This Summer!

Nordling here.
"Baby, you're gonna miss that plane."
And with that, BEFORE SUNSET ended, with Jesse (Ethan Hawke) sitting in Celine's (Julie Delpy) aparrtment, swooning (yeah, I said swooning) with love and adoration after hearing her sing. For those of us who love this series of romantic films by Richard Linklater, that final line was a kick to the gut - will Jesse stay with Celine after all? What of his marriage? And what of Celine's relationship with her photographer? And what does it all mean?
Generationally, Linklater's BEFORE SUNRISE/BEFORE SUNSET are beautiful love stories for the Generation X set, and yet they aren't simple meet cute stories, either. These are thematically rich movies, showing the many faces of love and how life can complicate something as pure as two soulmates meeting again. These are complex people with issues, and while the first one is about young love, unfettered (yet) by life, and full of relative innocence, BEFORE SUNSET is about those complications and how these two deal with them even as their love for each other blooms again. It's hard to believe 9 years have passed already.
Today Ethan Hawke confirmed, via Indiewire, "We’re also doing a follow-up to BEFORE SUNRISE and BEFORE SUNSET, so that will be fun. We’re going to shoot that this summer." He also stated that it's a different world in regard to these movies now: "The biggest change between this one and the last one is the Internet. The first time we did it, we didn’t have any pressure; nobody gave a shit.” So I'd imagine that everyone involved is keeping plot points close to the chest.
I think these films are wonderful and I'm excited to see the continuation? conclusion? to this series.

Seriously, don't cheapen it. The second encounter was a rare second chance. Don't turn this into a routine.

I really dig these films.
-
Why would Linklater ruin a story that he created? The films didn't make that much money, so there can't be studio pressure. What's he thinking?
-
The idea of making a sequel to Before Sunrise wasn't such a big deal, but a sequel to Before Sunset is treading on hallowed ground.

Or Rise of the Sunrise. It will be a prequel to the first.

I still can't believe I started watching the middle of Before Sunset and throught it was AWIP. Kept waiting for her to turn into a werewolf. Was thinking there's an awful lot of dialog and romance for a horror movie. Then the credits rolled.

Never saw the second one - but I loved the first one. Kinda reminded me in a way of something that happened to me once.

Before the sequel came out I hated the idea of ruining the ending of Before Sunrise. If the script is good I can't wait.
-
...out on fucking DVD!!!
-
Then any film this year.
-
They somehow pulled off the 2nd..but the story had a really satisfying end there. not sure I want to see a third and risk it.
-
I kid.

Im still interested in that Hawke/Linklater film theyve been shooting since 2001
by jimmy
The one that spans the life of a boy, and Hawke plays the father. They've hardly talked about that film
-
He should have.
-
Just love spending time with these characters.

But After Sunset works too…though it's not terribly elegant.

I liked the first one more than the 2nd one, I think the "real time" aspect of the 2nd was a detriment
by Tall_Boy6t6
Not to say the 2nd one was awful or anything, but I liked how the the 1st one stretched along a whole day so you could fill in a few gaps here and there.

You know, after the first one, I said "Don't ruin a perfect ending with a sequel!" and look what we got?
by sweeneydave
I would be foolish to say the same again. Plus, these movies are hardly about the plot points. They are about two people with with two very different but very compatible personalities. And it's about the evolution of those personalities as time changes them. We see their small subtle choices snowballing into much larger life events and discover that those life events changed their perspectives and their very souls in very different ways. And yet these souls remain compatible - but in completely different terms than their initial attraction was based on. I love these movies. A 3rd isn't going to ruin the story. It's all about listening in on an intimate telephone conversation, rather than about plot points excelling us towards a climax.
-
They stayed together and now they fucking hate each other.

sweeneydave, hardly ANYONE objected to the first sequel. This time is a different story

...has one of the best movie endings I've ever seen. It perfectly caps off the rest of the movie that came before it, and yet it doesn't "answer" everything. It's one of the rare movie endings that feels open-ended without demanding a sequel. We all know Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke work really well together, and they could do these movies forever, I just hope the script is good.

or even better "Another 48 Sunrises"

Found "Before Sunrise" a bit tedious but "Before Sunset" was a great film
by I am_NOTREAL
I don't know how well it plays without knowledge of its predecessor, however.
-
Let's see what happens next with these characters. I don't think any of the three involved - Delpy, Hawke or Linklater - are the type to settle for a mediocre story or script. They're all smart and conscientious filmmakers.
-
It is important to see it before the next one?
-
so pretty much we'll go ahead and start calling this the greatest trilogy ever, now.

I didn't like Before Sunrise much at all, but loved Before Sunset
by CountryBoy
I'll gladly see the next one

But after Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem.
-
You keep getting older, they stay the same age.
-
That is all.
-
Easily one of my favourite screenplays of all time. The attention to detail is pretty outstanding. I'm torn based on the ending but ultimately hopeful they can pull off something special.

I loved the ending to Sunset so much but Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy are an amazing trio. At this point, I think it would be great if these guys revisited the characters every ten years.

I'm surprised anyone could think the 2nd was better than the 1st
by Rupee88
Maybe you guys saw them out of order. The first one is clearly the better flim. 2nd held it together and was somewhat worthy followup. I'm a guy and most romantic movies don't do a think for me because they cater to dumb broads but Before Sunrise was clever and genuine. And Julie Delpy was super sexy and desirable so of course you vicariously live through Ethan Hawke's character. I'm sure if you are a chick watching it, then it's reversed but still the same effect.
-
Also righteous is that I'm gonna be on honeymoon starting on Monday, & we're gonna do the same walk around Paris that they do in Before Sunset.

Grr...for the last time! "I KNOW" is the final line of "Before Sunset", not "Baby, you're gonna miss that plane."

i mean really...what are he chances??

Linklater is really pushing boundaries. People love perfect movie moments, but life isn't like that. We all change, and these movies are windows into an interesting, dynamic relationship. I'm sure this won't be the last one. We're talking about a guy that has been filming a movie for 13 years to make sure the same actors play different ages. Just enjoy something new, it's not like they're just trying to cash in on some sort of franchise.

If they do make a third, it needs more gunplay than the last two.
by WeylandYutani
-
these movies are probably the most romantic films I've ever seen. Such depth and complexity that puts any typical, cliche "rom-com" or Notebook-like film to shame. Real people, real life. This is where Linklater's genius really shines.
-
When the first one came out, and they were asked about a sequel and they joked (at the time) that perhaps they will make one about every ten years just like so and so's has done, but it was some French film maker i never heard of and can't remember his name. Anybody out there know who i'm talking about? The first movie was Magic, the second was a solid follow up, they will never recapture the first one's chemistry because as we all get older life becomes about who we are and what we've become, when your young it's all about who you want to be and things you want to do. That being said i hope they do make one every ten years, that would be neat.
-
The Simpsons already did it.
-
Hawke is an alcoholic; walks into a liquor store and it just so happens Delpy is robbing the clerk at gunpoint. They both are so startled by the coincidence, they flee together. There are several tense scenes played by Michael Shannon as Delpy's unhinged, jealous boyfriend. Shannon and Hawke have savage fight and Shannon is accidentally killed. Delpy, now a heroin addict, overdoses and Hawke flees the scene; distraught. He eats a steak at Peter Luger steak house and walks to the nearby Williamsburg bridge and jumps off. End.
-
She mentions that it's one of her favourite spots and saw a poster that he was coming on a book tour. Wasn't just a right place right time situation. I actually bought a copy of the screenplay at the same bookstore (Shakespeare and Co) in Paris. Good times.

I want to see a movie about two adults talking. I don't want to see the new Spider-Man, nor most of the rest of the garbage that gets pushed by studios these days. I'm not sure why I come to this site.

..you must watch the porno..then After Bonner Rises..the semmen comes out. Hehehehehhehehehehhehehehehehehehhheh.

Linklater falls somewhere between ponderous and ponderful. Admit it, guys.

I'd had to make a joke in an attempt to mask my love of the previous two films. I guess I'm "beforeaphobic".
