So Who's Playing The Bad Guy (Or One Of Them) In Jose Padilha's ROBOCOP?

Nordling here.
I'm a HOUSE fanatic, so the idea of Hugh Laurie playing the villain (according to Variety) in Jose Padilha's ROBOCOP reboot tickles me to death. He's currently negotiating to play "the villainous CEO of Omni Corp" for the new film, but it's unclear if that character will be named after Ronny Cox's Dick Jones.
God, I hope so. Even the detractors at this point have to concede that ROBOCOP is getting a mighty interesting cast now. Still, although I love the idea of Laurie as Dick Jones, I can't imagine he's going to make anyone piss their pants in the men's room like Ronny Cox.

Good news

Now watching Blackadder is going to be even more awesome.
-
or maybe not.
-
Still not anything that gets me in a theater though.
-
At least they're pulling out the big guns to follow up Ronnie Cox's performance.
-
the guy's a total... what's the word? A total... um, a total...
-
more so than when Aronofsky was involved. I thank Gary Oldman for this. We always get all up in arms when a remake of a beloved movie is announced, but as long as the filmmakers are trying to do something different, we should give them the benefit of the doubt
-
Sad that the joke of the 6000 SUX is just as much a reality now, maybe moreso, than it was in 1987.

in the eventual Amazing Spiderman sequel. Hugh would be perfect. You know this to be true.
-
the original is just too iconic. the nuclear war board game, the 6000 SUX, the man on the street interviews... I'll buy that for a dollar! they'll try to make this "grittier" but fail... have there been any good "reboots" since that word went into use?

When I was a teenager I sold a book to Ronny Cox
by Queefer Sutherland
It was early in his career, and he didn't think anybody would recognize him. I worked at a bookstore and remembered him from TV (Apple's Way) and movies (Deliverance, Vision Quest.) Anyway, he browsed for a while and finally came up and tossed The G Spot on the counter. He seemed a bit embarrassed to be buying a book on how to sexually please a woman. He thought he was going to get away unrecognized, but as I handed him the book I said "You're Ronny Cox, aren't you?" He nodded uncomfortably. I said goodnight and he skulked off into the night. True story. I've sold books to other celebrities, but this was the funniest one. Any, I keep looking forward more and more to this remake! What a great cast! This is going to blow away Verhoeven's version, big time, expose it as the overrated piece of crap that it is.
-
George: I'm a complete duffer at this sort of thing. In the School Debating Society, I was voted Boy-Least-Likely-to-Complete-a-Coherent... erm... Blackadder: Sentence?

Thank you.
-
ROBOCOP was on earlier today, and I still laugh when Leon shouts, "I got 'em, Clarence!" after dropping the scrap on Murphy. He's so chummy, that Leon.
-
Terrible stop-animation, just terrible. Can't wait to see it all updated. This can finally be done right with today's tech. Assuming they deliver a good story, the original won't stand a chance. It might just be a Roboturd in the ass of the remake.
-
It has the word ROBOCOP in it so clearly it is a sequel or possible a prequel. In exactly the same way that if we think about THE DARK KNIGHT and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, we can clearly see that these are not sequels to BATMAN BEGINS. The studio went out of their way to not have the words BATMAN or BEGINS in the titles of these later, unrelated movies. It couldn't be any clearer than that. They just shared some DNA.
-
I thought Ronny Cox was this soft-spoken guy who drowned in a river in 'Deliverance' then Paul Verhoeven casts him as the amoral CEO of OCP and the ruthless dictator of Mars. Hugh can handle it. He can do comedic villains (101 Dalmatians, Arthur Christmas) he can make a guy piss, poo, sweat, bleed and jizz in his pants all at the same time. Just you watch.
-
REBOOTS AND REMAKES SUCK!
-
...the ones who do comedy well. Robin Williams, One Hour Photo, Albert Brooks, Drive, and my most famous example, Takeshi Kitano. He's a talk show host, for crying out loud, a comedian in Japan! And he's the same auteur who makes these ultra violent films like 'Warning This Man is Wild', 'Zatoichi', 'Brother' and 'Outrage'. Hugh Laurie is going to make us choke on our collective popcorn.

There it is, my friends. "The Detractors". If you are anything but complacent ...you are a DETRACTOR. Nordling has given a name to the problem faced by every "True-Believer" film geek: QUESTIONING. It joins the ranks of: "Anti-American" "Anti-Military" "Baby-Killer" And the classic... "SOCIALIST" So, remember comrades, if you don't like what you've been seeing of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. You are NOT a free-thinking individual questioning what Mother-Establishment is selling you. You are a... DETRACTOR!! If you don't want a remake of ROBOCOP, or, just like to bring awareness to the fact of how many times we've been burned by remakes, prequels, sidequels, etc. You are a... DETRACTOR!! All of you who disliked the STAR WARS prequels and thought they were lazy and routine? DETRACTORS!! Did you not think JOHN CARTER was an instant classic upon releasing? How dare you. You filthy... DETRACTOR!! Was the idea of Andy Serkis getting nominated for Best Actor for RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, asinine to you? Yes? You sad, little... DETRACTOR!! Do you want a REAL X-Men movie, about the X-MEN more than about Eric & Charles' bromance and Logan smoking & drinking? Really?? Hey, bub, you're a... DETRACTOR!! What, you really thought PROMETHEUS was a prequel to ALIEN, what with using basically the same music and set-up in its trailers that were in ALIEN's trailers, then got peeved that it was more like a really expensive episode of LOST? Game over, man. You're a... DETRACTOR!! Not impressed by a GRAY suited Superman? Well, you fight for Truth, Justice, and the pursuit of being a... DETRACTOR!! Don't have faith that the film makers of YOU, ME AND DUPREE can deliver an amazing Captain America movie? You worthless piece of shit. Thus, the life of a... DETRACTOR!! The Detractors shall be conquered. One day, their rein of Free-Thinking will be over. We shall all live in oblivious harmony. Amen.

ronny cox, not brian cox. some of you guys are saying the wrong name.
by JaredP
brian cox and ronny cox are two totally different actors. one is american and the other is scottish
-
Often, you will think that certain actors are playing certain roles, but on closer inspection, it turns out that it was Brian Cox all along.
-
Brian Cox is a red shirt. So was Ronnie. Brian Cox may be in every movie, but he's a dick in every movie. And he generally ends up as a dead dick. He's this generation's Wilford Brimly. Except Red. I kinda liked him in Red, he was a dick on a mission. But I think I sympathized with the dog more. So fuck him anyway.

Preferably a cameo where he gets shot all to hell and gone again.
-
even i have to concede the talent they are lining up for this is interesting. I hate remakes of classics. robocop is a classic. It's instantly quotable, and because it's instantly quotable you don't fuck with it.
-
This pleases me, Laurie has never done a full villain role that I remember, so should be pretty good to see Oldman and he chew some scenery. Can we get Ronny Cox as "The Old Man?" that would be sweet!

(1987) "Bitches, Leave !" (2013) "I say would you ladies object to just popping out for a moment, man stuff and all that!" Bertie Wooster IS Clarence Boddicker.
by Keith Maniac
Clarence Boddicker: I'll wager that really cheese's you off. You don't think I am a very nice chap at all do you ?. Murphy: Buddy, I think you're slime. Clarence Boddicker: Well yes, aha, now you see, I've got this little niggle. The local constabulary arent overly keen on me, so i've taken a bit of a dim view of them. [Waves hus gun a few times mimicking the sound of a cannon and finally shooting Murphy's right hand off] Clarence Boddicker: Well, give the chap a hand. [the gang laughs, then the rest of the gang shoots Murphy, who screams in pain]
-
I don't understand why the writers of this site seem to be jizzing in their pants over this remake. Most people with a brain can easily see that everything that made Robocop great no longer be done in today's PC Hollywood/society. Just look at the casting alone. The first movie just cast great actors. Age didn't matter, looks didn't matter and branding didn't matter. This cast is either too young, too pretty or too famous to fill those shoes. You were able to identify most of those actors with those roles and believe in them. This movie is just gonna be Sam Jackson, Hugh Laurie and that dude from the Killing. 25 years from now when people think about Robocop they will still see Peter Weller, Nancy Allen and Kurtwood Smith in their heads. Nobody is gonna picture Robocop as Sam Jackson, House and dude from The Killing.
-
June 13, 2012, 3:12 a.m. CST
Let me guess House will figure out how to fix Robocop with less than 10 minutes left...
by Andrew Coleman
This is a good cast. What a waste.
-
I am completely unimpressed with the cast, and I am not saying that just to take a contrarian position . Maybe it will end up working in the long run, but right now, it's a dud, based on the names attached. Gary Oldman is good, but he is a bit player. And, be honest: Samuel L Jackson has been in a LOT more bad films than good ones. The rest of the cast - rumoerd and confirmed - is 100% forgettable.

Although Verhoevens Robocop was innovating, daring moviemaking in its day, i actually think this is one of those movies that can actually benefit from a reboot/remake. Sci-Fi always lends itself to a refurbishment and the talent that is thrown at this production is promising. I learned today that Matthias Schoenaerts, Belgiums best export product , famous from Bullhead , The Loft and that French movie i keep forgetting the title from, turned down a big part(THE big part??) in Robocop. He's aabsolutely right not to take that route right now but boy, i could just imagine bringing his own kind of intensity to the part of Murphy.
-
and Dawn French as Ed209
-
And then have Arnie be the robocop! And have him being programmed, and the programmers are listening to something from Mozart, and Arnie will short out and say "I'll be Bach!" and goes on a killing spree until he's stopped by Johnny 5 playing ED-209!
-

by UltraTron
-
Has always been that the director's said all along it will be centered around Robocop's construction, e.g. in between the time where Murphy is shot and Robocop is ultimately built. How is that going to be interesting? The original was smart enough to show small glimpses of those moments, but what's more important is to care about Murphy the man. That way we automatically care about Murphy as Robocop. Spending two hours seeing Murphy slowly morph into becoming Robocop isn't a story at all; it's time filler used to stretch out a small element into a 2 hour film. But yeah, the cast is looking pretty impressive.
-
But I am actually feeling anxious to find out who plays Clarence.
-
...but they're getting a hell of a cast together here. Maybe the producers are blackmailing all these actors.

Besides, having him play the villian role in both Total Recall and Robocop remakes would be too much. Since Clarence Boddiker was fashioned after an SS officer, give Dinklage a Hitler stache and it would look priceless.

Funny how so many genre films seem to have trouble assembling great casts, but a completely unnecessary remake like this is overflowing with top-tier talent.
by kevred
Now if only the slackers behind this were telling their own story instead of just exploiting someone else's original ideas for the sake of profit. Hard for something starting in that place to credibly make the satirical points this film would need to make.

For all you people who keep hoping this film will be good. Belgian actor Mathias schoenaerts was offered a part in this remake, for a lot of money. He declined because "it didn't feel good". Doesn't bode to well if you ask me.
