Get Your ALIEN On!! Titan Books Brings Us The Lovely PROMETHEUS: THE ART OF THE FILM, And Returns THE BOOK OF ALIEN And ALIENS: COLONIAL MARINES TECHNICAL MANUAL!!
Whether you love the movie, hate it, or remain wholly indifferent to it, there seem to be two elements of PROMETHEUS about which all Geeks agree. 1) Fassbender is amazing in the picture, and 2) the movie looks staggering in terms of photography and design. As such, I thought y'all might like to learn a bit more about a newly issued book which offers plenty of insight into the second element mentioned above. The awesome gang over at Titan Books just released a fascinating new title featuring design and concept progressions from Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS.
PROMETHEUS: THE ART OF THE FILM is 191 pages of beautifully re-produced photographs, artwork, and designs chroncilcling the creation of Sir Ridley's much-anticipated, somewhat controversial, visually dazzling return to the horror/SF genre after an absence of three decades (if counting from BLADE RUNNER).
Scott provides a Foreword for this Mark Salisbury authored book, and contributes a generous amount of subsequent insight and context alongside Production Designer Arthur Max, Set Director Sonja Klaus, Guy Pearce (Peter Weyland), and Special Make Up Effects Supervisor Neal Scanlan.
One interesting bit of insight from Scott touches upon the early development of PROMETHEUS, Scott's strong interest in returning to the ALIEN mythos he was instrumental in shaping back in 1979, and the director's strong belief that it might not be possible to revisit the franchise in a direct and literal way while also keeping the experience fresh. Per Scott...
"I think in four films, honesty the good old Alien has worn out..."
[EDIT]
"He's no longer frightening. In one of the films, he was trapped inside caskets of glass. Before he was indestructible and was ungraspable. So I think he was used up and you've got to move on. That was my decision, move on, he's no longer frightening. We've seen so many creatures with jaws and teeth ad nauseam so they're not frightening anymore. So let's come up with something else."
A number of creature design studies appear herein, showcasing the development of the film's new passel of beasties and the physical construction of said lifeforms (provided they were actually built for the production). Ridley Scott storyboards are also present, one particularly amusing set of panels presents the space suited Prometheus crew as cute little smiley faced astronauts. Perhaps my favorite section focuses on designs for the Rover - this vehicle...

---(image NOT from the PROMETHEUS: THE ART OF THE FILM book) ---
...which reminds me a bit of ARK II, a vehicle from the '70s television series of the same name.

BELOW: Titan sent along this EMBIGGENABLE sample of artwork from the book, featuring a look at the Prometheus (originally called Magellan) crew at work on LV-223 using an early Rover design.
PROMETHEUS: THE ART OF THE FILM is now in bookstores, and is orderable HERE. Regardless of your thoughts on the movie itself, this book stands on its own as a lovely collection of compelling, evocative, and memorable Geek-friendly design and imagery which led to the birth of a movie whose full impact and importance to the genre may not be fully understood for quite some time.
Concurrently, Titan also is reissuing two titles from the way back machine. THE BOOK OF ALIEN from 1979, a design intensive exploration of ALIEN which..perhaps more so than the movie itself...gives one a very nice sense of exactly how much PROMETHEUS design is inspired (or at least informed by) by this movie.

When I was in Middle School, I vividly remember a bookfair at which the original version of THE BOOK OF ALIEN was on-sale. I didn't have enough money to buy it, and I desperately wanted it - having been madly in love with ALIEN since seeing it its opening week in May 1979. A friend of mine, who had been hording his lunch money for several days, bought the book instead - a development which was initially crushing and dispiriting to me. UNTIL...my friend expressed his intent to share this title not only with me, but the other guys in our group. In essence, THE BOOK OF ALIEN became something of a community Geek bible for some time, passed back and forth between us week after week, month after month as we drew pictures inspired by its design, invented our own stories to go along said pictures, more or less creating our own 'universes' in the process. It impacted our imaginations in ways which persist today, decades later. I still have that original copy sitting on my bookshelf, and I'm never going to let it go.
You can find THE BOOK OF ALIEN HERE.
Also returning thanks to Titan is the ALIENS: COLONIAL MARINES TECHNICAL MANUAL. Perhaps the most Geeked out, nerdified ALIENverse title to ever hit shelves, this is exactly what the title suggests: a comprehensive look into the practices, technologies, and overall universe of the United States Colonial Marines introduced in 1986's ALIENS.

Photos, schematics, and artwork explore a number of elements here, including equipment, weapons, protocols, vehicles (a Dropship - which gets a two-page cutaway spread, tanks (!?), power loaders, armor, artillery, etc.) Basically, this 159 page book tells you more than you've likely ever thought to ask about the Colonial Marines. And, by the time you're done with it, you may actually find yourself wanting to these Colonial Marines on the screen once more. Which, admittedly, you may've been already...
ALIENS COLONIAL MARINES TECHNICAL MANUAL is available HERE!

...they lost their scariness some time ago and he was right to move away from them. I wish they had worked in a creature that had a little more focus and iconic appeal. The snake and uterus-squid were OK, but certainly not something you'll be talking about decades from now as amazing creatures. They're just sort of generic beasties. I guess it's hard to top the best creature design of all time.

But really, there's a recession going on.

Rapace? Tell me so!

Probably also cinematography and VFX.

...that concept artists today seem to be too concerned with "realism" and not worried enough about compelling design? I can't count the number of movies I've seen in the last decade with 'believable' but utterly forgettable alien designs. It's like they want to make sure this could be a "real" creature with recognizable animal features, believable skin, etc. The only problem is you've forgotten what it looks like before you're even out of the theater. Super 8, Skyline, Battle Los Angeles, Spielberg's War of the Worlds... I can't remember what a single one of those aliens look like. I'm sure they were extremely believable as creatures, but who gives a shit if you forget it as soon as you see it? I think the last creature design I was really impressed with was District 9. Before that, Galaxy Quest. Even the snake and squid in Prometheus were believable as creatures, but they in no way imprinted on my brain in terms of design. That squid could have been the tentacle creature from the Mist, or the Watcher in the Water from LOTR. What makes it special? Concept designers seem like assembly line workers these days, just plugging in different parts here and there can calling it a day. Creatures need more DESIGN, less "believably".

'Prometheus' was a staggeringly beautiful looking film
by Raptor Jesus
Too bad they didn't finish the script. Joss Whedon once said 'tv shows are about questions... movies are about answers'. Well, I guess Prometheus was the best looking tv show ever made because it was all questions and no answers.

...just abused and misused. The original creature is still terrifying in it's design, nature and placing. If someone (hmm, say Sir Ridley?) had the foresight to place it in an interesting situation then I think it still has the capacity to be a great and terrifying movie creature. Just keep ADI away from it...
-
what the fuck is going on here? how much are they paying you guys??
-
you are so very very correct on that. This book has some beautifully rendered images, but the basic designs are not great. you see the artwork of the monster that attacks the engineer and think, 'quite good', but when it's in shot you think 'oh it's a squid'. meh. not enough thought gone into it.

I thought the monster designs in Prometheus were hit or miss
by rev_skarekroe
The snake creature was a hit. Basic, but sort of scary because of that. I like the cold stare of the engineer. The mutated geologist was a miss. He reminded me of Hector Hammond from Green Lantern. Didn't care for the squid/giant facehugger thing either, and I could have done without the proto-xenomorph altogether.

Or Z-Brush? Probably nothing much different.

by Buck_Futt
... comic adaptation. It was originally going to come out this week, but for some reason got pushed all the way back to September/October. There's a regular trade edition and a super-deluxe scanned from Walt's original art edition as well. The trade version is cheap, about $10 at Amazon. It's a great comic. I bought the original version when it came out, and still have my copy up in the bookshelf.

Sorry Neal, but the old man make-up for Guy Pearce was so awful if just took me out of the film. Pearce's performance was fairly poor too, to be fair. He neither moved nor sounded like a very old person. His eyes were those of a young man.
-
...were absolutely grand. Loved the other visuals that leaked a while ago of how the mutated creature was going to look. As it was, with the crab impression right before he went postal, that was one of the creepier pieces in the flick i really, really enjoyed. I'd thought leading up to seeing the movie that maybe 'infected' characters were just going to end up like the archaeologist tool did. Bit of makeup here and there, some contact lenses, but not actually beginning to lose their human structure in any way.
-
Pretty difficult to have a tie-in novelisation of something that had no fucking story.
-
just not much of a plot.
-
Just pulled the original off the shelves to give it a re-visit. Great wee book - lots of drawings from Cobb & Foss, a few by Moebius, and a good collection of Giger paintings and photies from the flick. Slim book but well worth the price imho.

Supposedly some of the design work in Prometheus was inspired by an artist named Alex Kozhanov
by lv_426
Tell me this guy wouldn't be perfect for designing the Engineer homeworld? http://www.gutalin.org/concept_art.html
-
I think the sad truth is Giger has slowed down a bit and is not really all that interested in film design work these days. I know that Giger did that mural for Prometheus, but other than that did he design anything major for the film beyond his old Alien and Dune designs being repurposed?
-
That was a big pet peeve for me in the movie too. Why Guy Pearce and not just an actual old guy? Plus how he pops up at the end when Shaw is running around with blood all over her and no one bats an eyelid. THEN they let her suite up and come along - oh god I could go on forever with the problems in this movie. I just can't believe when they had assembled the print that they thought the public would buy the gaping lapses in logic. The only thing I can think of is that Ridley just didn't get the coverage he needed when filming and got caught out in edit? There was a book released last year on Alien which took a retrospective detailed look at it's entire production. It has pull out art work etc... I picked it up on Amazon cheep and love it. I heard the author is working on one for Aliens. Hope so. I might get the Prometheus one just to wipe my arse with the pages.....
-
Wasn't Giger jerked around by 20th Century Fox during the preproduction of Alien 3? I read somewhere that it all left a bad taste in his mouth and he doesn't really trust filmmakers that much anymore. Pity. His artwork is still powerful. Kozhanov's art is incredible! I'd hire him to design the Engineer homeworld in a heartbeat.
-
Book of Alien has a twopage splash of the Cobb deluxe bridge design, which I have always seriously loved. In the 80s, I actually spent a couple months and built a model of it that was about 2.5' x 3' ... probably should have put a piece of glass over it and turned it into a coffee table. The 80s ... back when if you needed a scale viewscreen, you just put a piece of microfiche in and backlit it, then enhanced withe xmas lights.

Aliens is THE best scifi action movie ever and a shining example of a sequel as good if not better than the original. If Aliens did the same horror monster approach is Alien then fanboys of that era would have complained as much about that as Hangover 2. Just the quotes from Paxton are enough to warrant a classic rating.

BS, they're still scary if the directory knows what he's doing
by GeorgieBoy
Cameron turned them into bugs, which is fine, but not really scary. Personally, I'd like to see more Colonial Marines stories like from the books.<br><br>A proper director builds up the scare factor slowly instead of nowadays when it's slam-bang-the-scare-is-over-before-it-begins types.
-
It would be interesting to see those...
-
Seriously? I just watched that on the 65" HDTV and it's pretty damn scary at points. The Alien is NEVER filmed in broad light... always with backlighting and fog. Lots of good jump scares. I would say ALIENS has more scary scenes than the sum total of ALIEN 3 or PROMETHEUS, which had the self-operation scene, but that was both scary and goofy at the same time (really? She has her guts stapled together and doesn't bleed out on the spot?).
-
if they're going drop the voice-over at the (almost) end. Maybe replace it with a shot of a unicorn running in slow-mo?

I was disappointed with all of the new design work in PROMETHEUS
by frank
I loved seeing all of the old stuff from ALIEN on the big screen, but everything new was so bland by comparison. Why couldn’t Giger have been the head concept artist for PROMETHEUS? If the design of the creatures and alien settings had been better it would have helped the film immensely.
-
I don’t agree with Ridley that the creature is no longer scary, though I do think it was the right move to get away from it with PROMETHEUS.

I remember a great interview of Ron Cobb about The Last Starfighter...
by v3d
He was talking about the future of cgi and what might be possible in the future. He theorized it would be possible to construct accurate models of dinosaurs with functioning muscles and realistic skin textures. This was many many years before Crichton even wrote Jurassic Park or ILM made cgi dinosaurs a reality. A brilliant and visionary artist.

(AP) - Following the success of Prometheus, Ridley Scott has announced that he did indeed film another movie back to back. The new film (release date TBD) has a current name of Conmetheus, though that title may change. Also mentioned was that Conmetheus is a prequel to Prometheus. No doubt many inquiries such as, who was Peter Weyland's father... along with ...how much schooling did the scientists who created David have, will be among some of the highly anticipated questions moviegoers will want to know.
