Samuel L. Jackson Will Buy That For A Dollar, Motherf**ker!

Nordling here.
So we have Gary Oldman, Joel Kinnaman, and now Samuel L. Jackson has joined the cast of Jose Padilha's remake of ROBOCOP, according to Hollywood Reporter. Jackson will play Pat Novak, a "charismatic TV mogul and a powerful force in the Robocop world." Considering how much television played a part in the original movie, I'm sure Padilha's movie will have even more commentary about it in his version.
Who will Jackson play, a journalist, or a talk show host? I'm assuming the latter, and I'm wondering if ROBOCOP's catch phrase will sneak its way into the new film. So far, I like that this ROBOCOP seems genuinely different from the original, and as long as they honor the satirical aspects and Padilha makes it his own, I'm happy. The original ROBOCOP isn't going anywhere, and so far the casting is intriguing enough to keep me interested in what Padilha does with it.

*nerd* - I keep typing robocopy and then having to fix it when talking about this movie.

I LIKE Samuel L. Jackson, but he seems to like to work too much.

Sam Jackson. Dammit.

You need the black community to see this GET SAM heap there it is...

Go by a different title and most rubes wont even realize it's a remake, assuming the movie is as different as they're hyping it to be. Not that most 15 year olds are familiar with the brand anyway.

hopefully the Total Recall remake will tank and they'll stop fucking remaking Verhoven movies
by Squinty CGI Flynn
-
But I am about as tired of this dude as I am of Johnny Depp. He jumped the shark even before Snakes on a motherfucking train. His Mace Windu was a scowling popcorn fart, and his Nick Fury was blah. Really, they are going with superstar well known but-still-character-actors for this remake, and that will make certain that it lacks any of the gritty charm of the original. This thing is already too heavy than it needs to be with Oldman and Jackson. It can only go wrong.
-
EXACTLY Nordling! Thank you. I'm tired of the dripping-pussy-whiners who treat the original like the Bible. Hell, even the Bible has been translated differently. So shut the fuck up you assholes. If you don't like this movie, the original will still be there for you to jerk off to. I'm looking forward to the remake of a movie that really needs to be made again with today's FX possibilities. Same with Total Recall. The previews look pretty spectacular to me so far.

What? he won't play the overworked, street wise, but compassionate police chief who doesn't like what the company and the higher ups are doing to one of his men?

The movie doesn't have that role cast yet? Is Danny Glover available or is he too old for that shit?

Because that show MUST be in the remake. It would have to be some very very slimy. I'm thinking Adam Sander would be perfect to play the I'd bay that for a dollar guy.

I just fucked myself! Thanks for the suggestion. I feel a lot better now. I don't know what you little nancy-boys are all up in a dander about, but I really couldn't care less. Hell, you should just feel honored that I'm addressing you directly. If you hadn't made the great suggestion of fucking myself, I'd not have said anything. That being said, I can't see any reason why I should ever acknowledge your tiny minds and even tinier existences ever again. But at least you can now brag that none other than Queefer Sutherland has spoken to you! You lucky bastards.

You know, because it got blown out...mostly.

How is it Sam Jackson, Kevin Bacon, and Nic Cage have not all appeared in a movie together?
by Domi'sInnerChild
If only Kevin Bacon got the David Caruso role in Kiss of Death all would be right in the world.
-
And I hope to god that there aren't ANY nods to the original. Just make your own film. Leave it at that. Don't put any wink-wink "remember the movie I'm remaking? Me too!" moments in. For instance, the lame as fuck line-for-line moments from Predators that were in the original Predator. They immediately took me out of the film and I was enjoying it tremendously up until that point. So please, no classic lines.
-
What's even harder to believe is that there are actually movies that NONE of them have appeared in!
-
Nice. Good points. What if someone said "Don't remake The Thing From Another World , Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Blob, The Fly?" We would have missed some great movies. Some of the best in the genre. I love Robocop and don't think I'll like this one better but it sure as hell isn't worth worrying about for even a second let alone spazzing out on the internet and telling people to fuck off.
-
It will always have a special place in my movie heart. But I have no problem with somebody else making their own version. If I don't like it, I'll stick to the original.
-
...unless Ronny Cox is up for this gig again. Maybe as the 'Old Man'..? Either way, RC should be in this or it can fuck off. Let Peter Weller play Bodicker etc etc. Bullshit. This is one movie that never ever needed to be 'remade'/reimagined, whatever.
-
...and that mistake being to have the audacity to remake a classic such as Robocop.

queefer sutherland, so the original Total Recall is almost over and
by Grammaton Cleric Binks
it's still a perfect movie. As far as the visuals in the trailer of the remake, to me it looks just like a CGI fest. I'll catch it on DVD to compare, and it will probably be good, but unneccessary.
-
It may very well prove to be unnecessary. Again, I find the original very enjoyable, but far from perfect. I may yet have a more negative opinion of the remake. We'll have to wait and see. Some remakes have improved on the originals. Others have not. I haven't seen enough of this new Total Recall to make any judgment. But I will, oh yes I will. I love passing judgment after I've seen a film. Be well!
-
The original Ben Hur was a black and white silent film. Add color, sound, and Charlton Heston being a badass charioteer, and what's not to love.
-
The Fly and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I never saw the original The Thing with James Arness. I've seen The Blob remake, but it's been ages. I remember enjoying it, especially the open ending. Now that I think about it I've seen both the Jeff Bridges King Kong, and Peter Jackson's. Yet, I've never seen the original black and white.

-
Ignoring Spider-man, anything pre-1990 seems like it's in play. I think the other thing that protects them is if they still sell like crazy when new versions come out (Star Wars, Raiders, Jaws, etc.) or probably won't boot a new Franchise (Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Full Metal Jacket, etc). I'm actually kinda surprised the Godfather hasn't been rebooted. Especially when they made a video game out of it.

EVERYBODY adds Sam Jackson to their movie.
-
And why not a new RoboCop made from a new cop, you know, years/decades after the original one? Seems like the most sensible route to me. It'd be a "reboot" in the sense that it's a new story about a new RoboCop but it wouldn't just be revisiting the same movie we all know.

Sam Jackson will be: the space jockey god in PROMETHEUS 2 Col. Tigh in Bryan Singer's BATTLESTAR GALACTICA big budget reboot Master Chief and Sgt. Avery Johnson in the HALO movie Kratos in a GOD OF WAR movie Martin Luther King in the MLK trilogy by Spike Lee Blade in the BLADE remake, which will kick off a new trilogy in the Blade franchise. He'll also be in the SNAKES ON A PLANE remake. I also hear there is going to be a semi-followup to BEING JOHN MALKOVICH. It stars Sam Jackson and is called BEING SAM MUTHA FUCKIN' JACKSON.

Actually Robo's premise was more based on Marvel's Deathlok The Demolisher who debuted circa 1974. (same goes for Terminator to an extent.) Col Luther Manning was killed during a war game excercise only to end up part Man, all Cyborg Assassin. There's the one familiar scene in Robocop 2 in which Murphy visits his wife and child who belived him dead. Now unless it's a major coincidence, the same damn thing happend in one of DL's issues in which his Wife Janice freaked out and sheilded their son from him while calling Manning a Monster. Luther, disgusted with his superior while calling him a son of a..... Rips the American Flag from his chest. Influentual Comic that was ahead of it's time.

Is Nu-Robocop going to be its own movie? Or will the suits insist on shoehorning elements of the original and dialog one-liners to the point where it becomes yet another shitty remake with plot holes and stupidity galore? Like (random example) Burtons Planet of the Apes or more recently Prometheus! Of course not! I’m sure the experienced director helming this will stand up to the money men and tell them where to stick it! Movie makers have learned a lot from remakes and won’t make that mistake again?….again?….again?….again?...again?<repeats and fades out>

Robocop, Predator and Total Recall were all films I loved as a kid in the 80s, however..
by Baron Von Penguin
viewing them now 25 odd years later on blu ray and I've yet to make it to the end of any of them. I've found that alot of the 1980s films in particular have dated terribly for some reason. I can't say I feel the same about ones from the 60s or 70s. And just recently I received the Batman Collection on blu ray which was a chore to even muster up the enthusiasm to watch. We all know that Schumacher's attempts at the franchise were beyond the pale, that goes without saying but the big surprise was just how bad the first Batman was. Jack Nicholson dancing around the art gallery was the point at which I cried out "ENOUGH" and hit the eject button. Again a film I used to watch obsessively reduced to pantomime bollocks. Batman Returns is still great though thank fuck.

Think about how many times we've been burned by reimaginings, prequels, sidequels, sequels, etc.
by TopHat
And yet, people like Nordling and company STILL make excuses for them with the same routine explanations: "The cast looks interesting", "the director is a cool choice", "the film makers are supposedly making this one closer to the source material", etc. Fandom, geekdom, whatever you want to call it, has become the equivalent of a full-blown religion. Particularly, an AMERICAN religion; ideology supported and described directly and indirectly by industry and Capitalism (American Capitalism). The "faithful" are almost paranoid in how positive they must be. Positive in all aspects of what industry sells and creates according to their beliefs. Its easy to write off Nordling, Harry, and the rest of AICN as people who receive money and merchandise from studios ...but, I believe its much worse. Like the Middle-Class Christian Conservatives in America who vote and buy according to supposed "beliefs" that are filtered and processed by big business and private interest groups, AICN does not support and market the products they do for money. They do it out of obligation for their ideology. You must never criticize or genuinely question a movie, especially one you haven't seen (specifically, haven't PAID to see), it is too negative. Negativity is not the description of the faithful. True movie fans accept what the studios give them, not because they are "sell-outs" but because that is what a true believer does for what they have faith in. In the "film geek"'s case, that belief is movies. AICN is nothing more than an independent marketing site for the movie industry. The contributors receive marginal compensation in the forms of set visits, interviews, and free screenings. But, the feeling of confirming your beliefs - THAT is the true wage they are receiving. So, ROBOCOP, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, and any other film will be "worshipped" no matter what. The joy of complacency is unparalleled for those who believe.

I can't stand Batman Returns. The Schumacher ones are just an embarrassment to Batman. I get more entertainment value out of the old Adam West Batman series than Schumacher's two Bat(shit)man films.
-
Actually, what you say is pretty true. Also, it doesn't just apply to those outside the pearly studio gates, but inside them as well. If anyone wants to ever remotely have a chance of being involved in the film industry, they pretty much have to devote their life to it like a monk devotes his life to God. Also, once inside, you can't question the status quo on any level, or else you'll be seen as being *difficult* and not willing to *collaborate*.
