Go Retro With The WRECK-IT RALPH Trailer!!
The Kidd here...
I managed to catch the first trailer for WRECK-IT RALPH over Memorial Day Weekend, and I flipped for it then. Now that it's finally made its way online (via MSN), I can go crazy watching it over and over and over again.
If you've ever picked up a joystick or a paddle or a controller or a Powerglove in order to play some video games and loved what you were doing, then this one is all you.
Just enjoy. There's nothing I can say that'll make that meeting any cooler than it already is.

The video game references are going to make me laugh, though, I thought the Q-bert-ese thing was really funny. And Zangief sharing his thoughts in the bad guy meeting.

Just because you are bad guy does not make you bad 'guy'
by impossibledreamers
I wish now that Toy Story hadn't done their Support Group scene, including also having Jane Lynch, because it diminished that bit some. But, this could be cute in a retro way for adults. So much of the arcade attitude though is an 80-90s thing... curious who that will translate to a home console generation.
-
Love all the other game characters.

Looks like a cross between Toy Story and Tron. I'm disappointed his graphics don't change depending on the game his in though...

This looks awesome
-
Only in the 1994 movie. Looks okay, but typical Pixar-esque emo-ness of the characters will bring it down.
-
But it looks like they couldnt acquire the licensing rights for HALO's Master Chief let alone the character Kano from Mortal Kombat ergo the lookalike parodies of said characters..

Have game characters that are locked on the disc that people who paid for the disc have to pay for to play set free by Ralph and the gang.

Should have gotten SFIV's voice actor, since they're using SFIV's voice actor for M. Bison.

...why not Mario?

With one of those Marble Madness roller balls so is the concept that there's some place where every video game character can meet, or just arcade ones, because Sonic was never really big in arcades.

This is one of those films I want to like, but just doesn't feel 'right'. :(

But this really doesn't look like that much fun to me - the video game characters might appeal to those who watched Saturday morning cartoons based on games.

Considering it's something you would've heard blaring out of the speakers in your local arcade circa 1984.

Maybe if it took place on someone's pc that had every rom emulator on it.

I think it looks promising. Hopefully their saving all the real good cameos.
by Tikidonkeypunch
I'm still sticking by my idea of advertisement characters doing a movie together. Snuggles, Lucky (Charms), and Jolly Green Giant face extinction as a new ad firm looks to update their looks (hire new, hip versions). They must now fight for a new reason for living. In the end the public can reject the new hip versions and want their original characters back. They explain that some things don't need to be updated. To remake everything is to deny our culture. It erases the past. It could also be a comment on the movie industry with all the reboots and remakes as well as making a statement about the movie itself. Everything has to be greenlit only if it has an established media. (video games, comics, toys, ect)

$30.00 to unlock the remaining roster when it's already on the damn Disc? Business practices like this could really hurt Game companies in the end. It's no wonder why I'm in the habit of buying games in used condition.

it's Disney. they own everything.

Google "Breakfast of the Gods". It's only comics, but it might be up your alley.

That's a pretty sharp observation. Was it just me or was Kano in that support group, too? I'm kind of hoping Bowser gets a voice and gets to complain about being a single father with seven kids to feed.

-
Seriously, I know being a cynical movie-nerd makes you feel better than others and may even convince some of the dumber hipster-chicks to sleep with you, but sometimes it's okay to just say "Oh, that looks like it could be fun."
-
Yes, the premise sounds ALOT of fun. But if I'm honest that trailer was underwhelming.
-
Yeah, the player might beat him for a while, but ultimately, the bad guy always won in the old games. Few of those games were designed for the player to reach the end and win. You just kept playing until the bad guy killed you enough times. Which is kind of weird, thinking about it now.
-
Now that nostalgia is used up, we can get movies that are now only about referencing the past.. not actually creating any sort of nostalgic experience of memory tingle, but just straight Big Bang Theory Style Oh Its Funny Because They Said Words I Know filmmaking, this is really bold stuff these days sure to revive the dark days that cinema now finds itself in.

When Pixar tries to make movies look more "hip" and "cool" to teenagers, they ruin it. The first part of that trailer with the meeting and the arcade game was awesome, but the rest just looks like pixars 2nd worst movie (I didn't even want to see cars 2)

Love the use of Talking Heads in this... Looks great. It's ironic this trailer comes out the same week the news is talking about the number of violent games at E3... not so much a criticism of violence but the lack of imagination of game developers.

Potty mouth are intact. For the first time in years I am generally excited about a CGI movie, and yes that means that %@!# horrible wallE movie now that just sucked. Sorry for rant.

which many people seem to forget these days. Side story, once i went onto the Big Bang Theory IMDB page a few years ago. Probably to look up the cute actress or something. I looked at the threads and people were seriously talking about how they felt smart watching the show when they got the references. One comment was, "sometimes it's like doing homework." All 100% serious and before the show was a monster hit.

I wonder if the whole idea of an "arcade" will be lost on today's Wii/PS3/XBox crowd
by Nasty In The Pasty
Just seeing a quarter being dropped into a slot make me smile, but will today's kids even understand they idea of LEAVING THE HOUSE to play the best video games? I had an NES as a teen, and even then, I'd always hoard quarters to use at the arcade, because the best graphics and sound you couldn't get at home (the NES ports would always look and sound like ass in comparison).
-
Seriously, this is the most retarded concept I've ever seen, even in a kid's film. I mean, it's just fucking stupid. Dreamworks and Disney seriously need to stop copying each other too. Megamind covered the bad guy that wants to be good thing, and Disney isn't gonna touch it with this turd. Also....this is a movie about 30 year old video games.....and it's made for TODAY'S kids. At any point did someone say =....wait a minute....aw fuck=?

samuel fulmer get off your SFx TK high horse - Capcom did not rip you off
by Meta
Where the fuck on the game package did it say you were paying for 50+ characters? It didn't! It said you got 38 (plus bonus characters on the PS3). The extra 12 characters will be $20 and free if you buy the Vita version (and free to transfer to the PS3 version). You don't like it you don't have to buy it. It's cheaper than buying the 10 extra characters for $40 on Super Street Fighter IV disc 1 year after SFIV. Just because something is on locked a disc, doesn't mean your entitled to it without paying for it, if it wasn't promised to you in the first place. These days a lot of standard versions of PC and Mac Software have deluxe versions as well. When you upgrade, you're not getting a whole new program, they're just unlocking those extra features, which were alread ythere. Another analogy. If you pay for basic cable or sat-tv, all the premium channels are sent to your receiver, even if you didn't pay for them. They're just locked out content. But the premium channels are not available to you unless you pay for them to unlock those channels. Much like the extra characters The only crime Capcom did was not making the 12 new characters available shortly after release (making us wait until September was wrong). Other than that, you and your misguided sense of entitlement should not be misinterpreted as a self-righteous sense of standing up to misguided belief in corporate greed.
-
it was super unfinished and some of it was just story boards but they had a screening here in Arizona with john lasseter siting 2 rows in front of me taking notes it was pretty amazing
-
At least, for me. This did not win me over at all. But Tangled's trailers left me cold, and I loved the movie, and found it got better with repeated viewings. I don't know what I would have done different, but I know Disney could have done much better than the trailer the cut for Tangled, given the overall quality of the movie. So, I'm expecting this movie is much, much better than the trailer leads me to believe.
-

@grinspoom, I agree. That's why I disliked Ready Player One but think this has potential
by bah
The geek culture was mostly window dressing in RP1. You could replace the 80s puzzles with any other puzzle and the plot would remain intact -- and you'd see how thin it really is. Here, the plot is about the games.
-
June 7, 2012, 8:48 a.m. CST
No one would call Toy Story a bunch of references to Etch a Sketch and Mr Potato Head
by bah
-
Kids still play with them. That's very different than fucking Q-Bert for example. Now kids might enjoy the characters regardless of their origins, I'll give you that. But when the focus of the story is the quaintness and repitition of 80's video games, that's going to go right over their heads. =Bad guys= in games now don't just wear red shirts and sneer anymore, they are really fucking twisted and cruel. They have long monologues in near movie-quality scenes including multiple angles, lens effects, etc. Take Batman Arkham Asylum for example. Now imagine the Joker gets sick of being a video game villain and goes and joins HALO instead. Yeah, exactly. Wreck-It Ralph is basically TRON for 4 year olds and it's really going to suck. Disney is just going down the poop shoot lately.

@wrath_of_fett, the changes in games is clearly one of the points
by bah
I don't think the repetition is the main motivation. He doesn't want to play the bad guy anymore. I don't think that's too deep for a kid. Kids might not know Samus or play Gears of War, but they're probably aware of them. And they certainly know Bowser and Pac Man (yes, they still play Pac Man). Anyway, I never heard complaints that kids wouldn't know who Betty Boop was in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, or that they wouldn't get the whole 40s noir aesthetic. Or that The Iron Giant's Cold War paranoia went over kids' heads. Your argument that this isn't dumbed down enough for kids is a new one, though.
-
June 7, 2012, 10:22 a.m. CST
They DIDN'T know who Betty Boop was, but since she was in for like 5 frames, it didn't matter
by Jaster Mareel
Kids understand war, so I don't know where you're going with that one. Who the fuck is Bowser? I spend my youth in an arcade and I have no idea who that is. Look, it probably won't be as bad as Cars 2, but that's the biggest compliment I can think of right now.
-
June 7, 2012, 10:26 a.m. CST
This reminds me of Sky Captain or Scott Pilgrim or Speed Racer
by Jaster Mareel
All films little geeks thought would be world-changing and totally fucking amazing. They looked like complete shit from the get-go and I was like =What the fuck are you idiots talking about?= In all instances, I was proven right. If this is indeed shaping up to be another shut-in-geek-culture film, I will be proven right again.
-
June 7, 2012, 10:28 a.m. CST
Exactly my point. Kids still got the movies even if they didn't comprehend every last detail, like Betty Boop and Mutually Assured Destruction
by bah
Bowser has been the primary antagonist in nearly every Mario Brothers game title since 1985. Including the admittedly few arcade incarnations.
-
That shit was played out when I was 16. Why Nintendo insists on recycling that shit over and over is beyond me. And I'm not saying they won't understand the movie or something. Thus my point that they may like the characters regardless of the origins. They just won't get any of the references. And for a film seemingly built on references, that could very well be a problem. But my main point is that the movie just looks profoundly stupid, and as Cars 2 proved, kids don't like stupid movies either.
-
June 7, 2012, 10:55 a.m. CST
I don't know that it's built on references, any more than Roger Rabbit was
by bah
Which is why I keep coming back to that. At any rate, Disney isn't Pixar, but every one of their CG movies has been at least good. Of the studios doing CG kids movies, I'd put them second. As for Mario, they recycle it because people still love it. It's good game play. I see dozens of Marios every Halloween. Why the hell would they drop him?
-
I didn't get ripped off, because I actually tried the game before hand and regardless of how many characters were available, it sucked compared to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, as well as preaty much every Capcom vs. game ever made. But let's just say the paying a bunch for extra characters that 10 years ago would've been included for free is just not my thing.
