Thomas Alfredson Acquires The Rights To Astrid Lindgren's THE BROTHERS LIONHEART!

Beaks here...

I've been wondering how Tomas Alfredson plans to follow-up his masterful adaptation of TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY. Will he tackle another of John Le Carre's George Smiley novels, or perhaps drift back to the horror of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN? Looks like it's closer to the latter.

Word is coming in from our Swedish readers that Alfredson has purchased the rights to Astrid Lindgren's celebrated children's book, THE BROTHERS LIONHEART (Twitch confirms the news here). It's evidently a very dark take on childhood about two brothers battling a cruel tyrant in the fantasy realm of Nangiyala (which is, judging from the plot summary, some kind of Purgatory). Like TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY, it was previously filmed as a TV miniseries in the 1970s.

Given that he just acquired the rights, we're probably two years away from seeing this one - and that's if it survives the development process and gets financing (LET THE RIGHT ONE IN author John Ajvide Lindquist is writing the screenplay). So it's possible Alfredson could take on another gig in the interim. He had been attached to direct Philip Reeve's fantasy LARKLIGHT for WB, but we haven't heard anything about that one since 2010. How about SMILEY'S PEOPLE, Tomas?

Thanks to readers Hefa and Henke for passing along the news.
