Can Breckin Meyer’s New
TBS Sitcom MEN AT WORK
Be As Bad As It Looks??
A sitcom written by writer (“Robot Chicken”) and TBS star (“Franklin & Bash”) Breckin Meyer, “Men at Work” follows the love lives of four fellows who work at a Manhattan men’s magazine. It stars Danny Masterson (“That ‘70s Show”), James Lesure (“Las Vegas”), Michael Cassidy (“The OC,” “Smallville”) and Adam Busch (Warren on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”).
TBS, never shy about forwarding screeners did not forward me a screener for this one, which pleases me. TBS’ promos make it look awful.
... None of "Men at Work" is funny, but the greater sin is how uninspired it feels. …
... manages to make even those not very smart shows sound intellectual. … the writing often seems desperate. One episode, for instance, centers on Milo’s efforts to learn text messaging. Yeah, text messaging. That thing even your grandpa has been doing for several years now. …
... rays of charm do break through the haze of the ordinary and obvious, even if just for a line or a line reading. …
The San Francisco Chronicle says:
... Fans of "Sex and the City" have finally gotten their wish: Their beloved sex-focused sitcom is back on the air ... sort of. The four women have become four men, of course, and the writing isn't as good. Oh, and the laugh track so annoying, it's offensive. And did I mention that the costumes would be considered fashionable if you were holding a yard sale? …
... This woefully flat riff on modern manhood might be cleverly sprinkled with derogatory references to Dane Cook, fake-tan “whorange” skin color and other assorted modern afflictions, but you’d swear it had been discovered in a box of old VHS cassettes marked “miscellaneous.” …
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says:
... If it's a bridge, it's the oldest, ricketiest one I've seen in a long time. … mostly an unfunny, uninteresting look at four work buddies …
... even with a game, mostly appealing cast, the pilot provides scant incentive to invest in a weekly subscription. …
10 p.m. Thursday. TBS.

Thought this was based on the Charlie Sheen/Emilio Estevez movie of the same name. It isn't. FAIL!!
-
Have you watched that network? It's programming is geared towards the elderly, and trailer park inhabitants.
-
...and that mistake being that they don't put nearly enough My Name is Earl on Comcrap's On Demand to satisfy me.
-
Does that count?
Also: I misread three times Varietys quote and was sure they'd said '...the pilot provides scat incentive'.
I thought 'thats a very dubious incentive but it may well be necessary'. I need glasses.
-
and thank Christ I can ff through all the commercials for this, the douchebag lawyer show and the lesbian cop show. That's like all they have.

TBS likes to think they are sitcom geniuses because they got the rights to reruns of The Office

-
7pm-8pm EST for the back-to-back Seinfeld episodes.
-
Pysch is on USA network. TBS mostly runs reruns except for several sitcoms aimed at the urban market.
-
"Shovin' Buddies," after the gag in the Peter's Progress episode of Family Guy. It's on right after "Slowly rotating black guy."
-
..bored now.
-
Who is asking for more Breckin Meyer? He just might be even more bland and uninteresting than Justin Long.
-
Nah.
-
Each review a major slam. Ouch.
-
is a TNT show. Still Turner, different network.

. . . of Big Bang Theory the other day, I'd say there has to be an audience for this too.

now get in the fucking basement

And the only thing in the show approaching "manhood" was the supporting bit by J. K. Simmons (reprising his J.J. Jameson shtick). The "Sex and the City" comparison is appropriate, because all the characters speak as if they were written by females...just one uninformed male stereotype and trope after another.
-
THat is truly a TV show that assumes its audience dumb as rocks!!!!
-
Channel 39. Seinfeld will never, ever, ever, nerver get old.
-
Yeah I don't understand the Big Bang Theory love at all. I watched the first episode on a rerun after hearing how good it was and was fucking in shock at how much it sucked. Unless it pulled a Seinfeld and got infinitely better after the first season I guess I just don't get it. In fact, aside from Seinfeld i don't think i've ever found a sitcom funny enough to watch regularely. Fraiser had its moments though.
-
I guess when he's faceless, doing voices for Robot Chicken, no harm done - but he's a lousy actor and takes up media space
-
...they spent a lot of time making fun of geek tropes. Now it is much more character driven where the comedy comes from the characters and the geek stuff is actually more realistic and adds to the atmosphere rather than driving the story. It's worth watching from the second season on.
-
BBT went from being a comedy about Geeks to being more like Friends in its heyday but with geeky, more accessible characters instead of NYC young hip douchebags.
-
Show some respect!
-
...is for halfwits much like Three and a Half Men and anything on TBS besides basketball or baseball.
