There Can Be Only One... Ryan Reynolds?!

Nordling here.
I know how everyone feels about reboots, but I always thought (and still do) that if there's one 1980s movie that was going to be rebooted, it should be HIGHLANDER. Not that there's anything wrong with the original - it's still a lot of fun and Sean Connery as a Spaniard by way of Scotland is always a pleasure.
But HIGHLANDER is a case of a story that might be too big for what it sets out to accomplish. It's a big story, with epic battles, centuries of strife, and it all ends in New York between two bitter enemies. With a bigger budget and more scale, HIGHLANDER could have been something quite different.
We knew the reboot was coming, with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directing, but according to Variety, they may have found their Connor McCloud, and it looks like it might be Ryan Reynolds. He is apparently the frontrunner to star in the project, and while I am certain fans of the movies and series will make their opinions known on the matter, I think Reynolds is a solid choice. Maybe a bit safe, honestly, but he's physically capable, and after GREEN LANTERN (which, while a bad movie, benefits from Reynolds' earnest performance) he may be looking for a good solid franchise to be a part of.
So more importantly, who will play the Kurgan? My vote's for this guy.

Reynold's is hilarious, he needs to try less action movies and more comedies!
by locater16
And I vote for Hemsworth as a Highlander. Chris (AKA Thor) Hemsworth, his little brother is too young.

it is a great movie, but I'd like to see it done bigger and better!

Back when he had a career. Seriously though Ryan Reynolds?

damn missed being first by that much

Put up your salary from this movie and co-produce a Sinestro-centric GL sequel, dammit. Seriously! Whose genius idea was using Hector Hammond? And going full Parallax in the first friggin installment?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! This franchise needs to live on and have the redeeming sequel us Geoff Johns fans have been dreaming of... SINESTRO CORPS WAR!!!!!!!!!!!
-
And Reynolds is a cool choice. Also for the Kurgan it's gotta be Dwayne Johnson.
-
But Reynolds and Nordlings choice (unbelievable) for Kurgan would make this a direct to DVD. How about Cilian Murphy as McCloud and Liam Neeson for Kurgan???
-
Not Ryan Reynolds. Noithing against the guy. But he is not the highlander. Nope. Do the Deadpool movie. Try another jab at Green Lantern. I'll watch. But not Highlander. Maybe Simon Peg? hahahaha Kidding.
-
HIGHLANDER is one of my all-time favorite movies, and nothing they ever try will ever really be HIGHLANDER, without the Queen music and Mulcahy's awesome scene transitions and all that... i'll probably see it once and it may be entertaining enough... but after that, whenever i want to see a HIGHLANDER movie, i don't think i'll pick the reboot, but i'll rewatch the original anytime
-
Needs a badass but with a sense of humour. (Happy halloween ladies!!!) Would love to see someone like Sly tap into the evil bastard of his psyche. No.?? Just me then.
-
I know that he seems to be a very serious actor, but it's something about the way he carries himself. There's kind of an ever-present cockiness that I find off-putting. Even in Green Lantern I just couldn't get over the feeling he wasn't playing the role seriously. I'm sure a lot of folks like him, but he's just one of those actors that doesn't click for me. As far as a Highlander reboot goes, the only untouchable elements of the original were Clancy Brown and Sean Connery. If they want to re-cast the Kurgan and Diego, I hope they take the characters in a wildly different direction so folks don't compare them. It would be unfair to the actors in the reboot. As far as Christopher Lambert goes, they could replace him with a dixie plate attached to a signpost and I don't think anyone would notice so Reynolds would probably be fine in the lead role.

Just do a sequel with Reynolds as a new immortal we've never heard of before. Bring in Lambert to mentor him. Or hell, even Adrian Paul. The only people who know about the Highlander franchise and care enough about it to see a new movie based on that alone are the ones who don't want to see the classic characters written out. Just bring Reynolds as a new McCloud, and move on.
-
Was thinking that myself when i heard of a reboot. It is an obvious choice but theyll probably give him the Sean Connery role. Still a good call Alakazam.
-

Erm, he's called The Highlander because he's Scottish right?

The first movie was laughable due to Lambert's french sounding attempt at a scottish accent never mind Connery's Scottish sounding Spanish accent. Can't see Van Wilder doing any accent other than his own either..

David Tennant or Cillian Murphy for Conor, Ray Stevenson for The Kurgan, or just bring back Clancy Brown. As a friend of mine suggested, Daniel Day Lewis for Ramirez, with The Darkness covering Queen's soundtrack. But not Ryan Reynolds.

Even though I kind of hate him.
-
I throw tomatoes at Ryan Reynolds. I sort of think Sam Worthington might be a cool choice. I know people don't like him but I think there's something to him. Also, let's hope they ignore the "they're actually aliens!" crap from the first sequel that was kind of a remake.

Joel Edgerton would be a great Connor as well, and I'm digging the Farrell and Butler suggestions as well.

Geoff Johns defends that p.o.s. that was the Green Lantern movie.
by hank henshaw
If you want a Geoff Johns GL movie, they already made it. He was heavily involved with that production, and he promised the movie was going to be great. Green Lantern: poorly cast, poorly directed, poorly written, and half-assed, rushed effects. Seriously, who wants a "Battle of the Care Bear Lanterns" movie? Pass.

Highlander I was a fluke. It should have been as horrible as everything else in the franchise but, miraculously, it wasn't.
by Margot Tenenbaum
And that is mostly because of Queen and Sean Connery, two elements that are almost completely unavailable to a remake.
-
That moment when one of the annoying Watchers tells Connor that his cousin Connor did them a favor by killing the Kurgan...sure qualified as a reboot, to me. But...Ryan Reynolds...really? Let him do GREEN LANTERN 2. but with a writer and director who actually give a damn.

by Rebel Scumb
Now i know the original gets a lot of love, but even it is pretty terrible. But the concept is great and could be done well 2 big tips: 1) Don't cast a frenchman as the scotsman 2) Don't cats a scotsman as a spaniard Why not make Gerrard Butler or Ewan McGregor the Highlander??? Why not get Javier Bardem or Antonio Banderas or someone actually Latin to be the spaniard I'm just saying is all

Highlander without Queen would be like sex without a penis. What's the point?
-
Nikolaj Coster Waldau for Connor. That's right- Jaime goddamned Lannister as Connor Macleod. Dude's proved that he can handle an accent.
-
Not one of the current Highlander movies ever worked very well. The concept is fantastic. It really is.But all the movies were just bad. The first one wasn't horrible, but the rest weren;t any good at all. And, yes, I agree that a GOOD Highlander movie is much needed.
-
I've never seen a Connor McLeod in Ryan Reynolds. I think its a bad choice. So... looks like another crappy Highlander film.
-
why the fuck is he still getting work again?
-
... and Connor MacLeod is supposed to be 18 or so at the time of his death so all the ballyhooing about guys over 40 is pretty stupid. I'd rather Ryan Reynolds not be a party to another massacre of a franchise I rather enjoy (as much as GL was not his fault), but if they must persist in this... Antonio Banderas for Ramirez.

What is Highlander without that bombastic main title? Less. Exactly.

Plus, how bad ass would he be with a sword? Am I right? Totally. I love the original Highlander. It was a great movie, but just imperfect enough where a reboot would work. There's enough room for improvement on both the concept and the execution. Modern fight choreography is certainly leaps and bounds ahead of where it was 30 years ago. This could really be fun.

... at least so far as the original expanded Highlander universe goes that includes the TV series, Immortals are not born and do not have mothers or fathers. They simply appear in different eras to be adopted by families and grow up in various cultures. My point is, even if an Immortal is "born" in Scotland, they are not of Scottish blood. They are of unknown blood.
-
though I enjoyed the first movie when it came out, for me the Highlander will always be Duncan. But either way, Reynolds is a TERRIBLE choice. Just do the damn Deadpool movie already. That's the part he was born to play. Not Conner freakin McCloud.
-
When they got all crazy and started talking about Immortals being aliens or whatever. No, that isn't how it should work. They have mother and fathers, and when they die they have a chance to become immortal... Sort of like a genetic defect or some crazy evolutionary thing. I hope they don't bring aliens into it.
-
Or Aaron Eckhart.
-
He was Egyptian by way of Spain by way of Scotland.
-
Just....no. At this rate I expect them to cast George Lopez as Ramirez.
-
That may be true, but the Immortals we all grew up loving and knowing had Scottish, English, and that weird Lambert accent.
-
I like Taylor Kitsch. I like Kitsch, I like Josh Hartnet, I like Skeet Ulrich, I like Jim Caviezel, and I like Orlando Bloom. I find their acting styles to be subtile, authentic and ethereal - not bland. So shove off! Contrary to popular belief, Taylor Kitsch is actually quite talented and charismatic. Kitsch did what sounded to my ears to be a spot-on South African accent in "The Bang Bang Club" - a very fine performance. So possibly Scottish shouldn't prove too challenging. I think Kitsch has the appropriate age, looks, physicality and tone of voice to play a world-weary immortal warrior rather plausibly. Plus, the misinterpretation of Kitsch's acting as stiff or vapid is more accurately translatable as displaced and wistful for Connor MacLeod. The only other guy I can think of in that 30ish age bracket that might warrent consideration would be Henry Cavill. But he's already Superman and supposedly next in line for James Bond.

Reboot the film. Make a 21st century Highlander movie - go on, I dares ya. In fact, I double dares ya. But let me tell you one thing: It will be shit. It won't have any of the warmth and humour of the original... It won't have the classic Queen soundtrack... It won't have the sheer menace of the Kurgan... It won't have the kitsch cult factor of the original... But it will bomb and tank like a billion John Carters multiplied by a zillion Green Lanterns. And we know why - because it will be filled with gee-whiz CGI, snappy "with it" jokes, a toothsome lead and a baddie who is just bad. You know there can be only one!

The original theatrical version of Highlander was a fantastic movie(ignore the sequels). What the heck is with all the remakes? What was great about Highlander is that it was a cool idea and the jumping back and forth between present day and the past was well executed. Sean Connery was perfectly cast as a good and decent man who knew he could not defeat the Kurgan(the hint seemed to be that he became immortal at the age he was "mortally wounded" and he was older than Conner when this happened, so he wasn't as young, fast or as strong - at least that's the feeling I got) and he wanted to help someone stop the badguy, even if it cost him his own life. I have a buddy from Scotland and we watched it one day and he was totally confused when it switched from the NYC parking garage to medieval Scotland and he said "What the heck is going on?"(same reaction I had when I watched it - I didn't see any trailers or posters for it before watching it) and I told him to wait for it. It builds slowly and all comes together in the end. It is a great movie. I don't like the director's cut as much as it gives more away and shows a few flashbacks of Connor in scotland when he's at the wrestling match - it's better when it suddenly shifts to Scotland and you don't understand why. Can't they just leave well enough alone? The sequels(especially Highlander II) were bad enough - they should have made one movie and left it at that.
-
... but there are still no mothers and fathers. All Immortals are foundlings. Where they come from has never been explained and should never.

the Scottish actors Kevin McKidd (Rome) Ewan Magregor, Gerard Butler. Or failing that, the Irish Colin Farrell (yep, i said it). All better than Ryan Renolds !!! He was great in 'THE NINES' but he's not MaCloud! <p><p> As for the kurgan (Clancy Brown was best thing in the original - best villain ever, along with Ben kingsley in SEXY BEAST), maybe Benecio Del Toro could fill those shoes (just). The Mickey Rouke rumours a while back were inspired, but not quite right. <p><p> Hardest role of all to fill (as with with Bond) is Connery's Ramirez. The whole Scotsman plaing an Egyptian thing is a side show distraction for what is a master-craftsman portraying an immortal in such a believable way that it's tough to follow. I can only imaging Daniel Day Lewis delivering the goods, but it's highly unlikely he'll do it, so maybe.... Shit, i dunno, like i said it's tough. Definitely NO to Liam Neeson - just cos he's Celtic!!! He's not right and also over exposed as the immortal type (Clash of the Titans-crap etc). Maybe, using the Bond connection, it could be Daniel Craig - i could see him as the jaded swashbuckler ready to lay it down for a higher purpose.....<p><p> Greg Widen's script is one of the most cinematic concepts ever scribbled, so as much as i love Mulcahays original, a reboot is worth a go. But it has to be said and accepted universally that THE most successful element of the original was the Queen soundtrack -- disregard this factor and whom ever stars it's as doomed as the dodgy sequels to fail. The new producers need to emulate Queen fully (such as Guns 'n Roses interest in scoring the first sequel, which sadly never happened, or, and i'd do it this way, re-use the Queen soundtrack (perhaps having Brian May & Roger Taylor revisit the tracks for updating, and introducing latter tracks such as 'I WANT IT ALL'. HEADLONG, RIDE THE WILD WIND, and THE HITMAN (a perfect fit for the Kurgan).

Oh well, Christopher Lambert couldn't do a Scottish accent either. Still, I'd hope for someone who can.

he was living in Spain at the time when he met Conner. That said, I don't think Ryan is good for this. He definitely excesses better at comedy. Butler would be awesome- but both guys are pretty old- considering Lambert was 29 when he made the original. I welcome a reboot, but fear it will turn out like Conan did.

-
Well he is CCO for the company so he was heavily involved, of course he is biased. I meant more that they need to have a decent screenwriter take a crack at an actually juicy Johns arc like Sinestro Corps War and distill what's good about Johns' Lantern into an actually bad ass movie. If they hoped to do 3 movies realistically then why fuck around on Earth with Hector Hammond for half a movie when you've got Parallax? Movie 1 = Green Lantern: Secret Origin, Movie 2 =Sinestro Corps War, Movie 3 = Rage Of The Red Lanterns... if you make it to 4 then do Blackest Night. GL needed to get really epic really quickly. Much like Superman Returns, I thought the cast was actually good, just saddled with a disappointment of a movie.

Seriously, why the hell would you NOT get him again! As for Conner, my vote is still with Gerard Butler. And for God's Sake, use the Queen soundtrack again. No shitty Adam Lambert Queen tribute band, the original damn Queen!
-
I agree with proevad... Highlander and it's sequels were awful. This will finish Reynolds off...
-
I can’t buy Ryan Reynolds as a serious leading man. Surely there are many better choices for the role. It’s such a great concept that it could be a classic movie if executed properly. They should just reuse the same Queen soundtrack also. You aren’t going to top that.
-
This dude has some awesome acting chops. We will all kneel before Zod soon, and I think after Superman, he is really going to explode with tons of movie rolls. This would be a nice fit for him. If you disagree- Then, GO FUCK YOURSELF!!
-

I also agree with Butler as Connor- but not Colin Ferrell...
by GoFuckYourself
I like Ryan Reynolds. Funny dude and I think with a better staff, the Green Lantern could have been a really solid movie with no problem of a sequel being "green"-lit (haha). But Butler is such an OBVIOUS choice for this. I wonder if he was approached and declined.
-
Then the producers need to have their heads examined, as well as a big need to go fuck themSELVES!!!
-
That was easy.

Gerard Butler as McCloud, Michael Shannon as Kurgan, Antonio Banderas as Ramirez
by Stegman84
If you are going to do a needless remake, at least do it right and with some class...
-
Reynolds is not "the one"...not by a longshot. I 2nd the choice of either Hiddleston or Kitsch as Connor...and for Ramirez?...Banderas or why not go for another former Bond with Pierce Brosnan?
-
LET YOURSELF FEEL THE STAGG, HIS HEART BEATING.... RUN, HORSE EUGGHHHHH.. COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!! MACLEOD COME ON!!!!!!!! I FEEL HIM!!!
-
Yeah, I get it. He's from Scotland. But maybe when you're immortal and you've been alive for hundreds and hundreds of years traveling all over the world chopping heads and taking names - you lose your goddamn original accent and start talking like a weirdo citizen of the motherfucking world. That's one of the many qualities I find so charming about Christopher Lambert's HIGHLANDER performance - I don't know what fucking accent that is - he doesn't sound like a Scot or a Frenchman. I like Reynolds quite a bit, but he should be doing a FLETCH reboot or some shit - not HIGHLANDER. And Gerard Butler kind of bores the hell out of me. How come nobody's suggested Idris Elba yet? Because, this is clearly a job for Nicolas Cage. Am I right?
-
Clancy just owned the part.

Muse is one of my fave bands.. but it's true, they ARE Queen.

It was sheet! But no, I love the Bardem as Ramirez suggestion. I also like Reynolds but he makes no sense for this movie.
-
How about Russell Crowe?
-
A Brit is probably the best choice. If there are Americans cast in it, let them be supporting or character roles. Get Fassbender for McLeod. Period. The expectations associated with a reboot are sky high, so there better be Oscar-level talent in the key roles. The original movie, done right, could be expanded into two movies, or perhaps a trilogy, especially if one wants to explore different time periods leading to the finale battle.
-
And that's Danny Trejo. Even had every other damn thing in the Star Wars prequels been absolutely spot-on perfect, I'd still never forgive George for failing to cast him as Jango Fett.
-
Acting chops = yes Physicality= done Intensity= solid Pretty easy choice to me. Plus he's big so he won't looked overmatched against the 6 foot 3 inch Reynolds....

-One year of love. -Who wants to live forever. -Princess of the universe. And I don't like Ryan Reynolds for the role. He should do green lantern 2, was cool in that role. What about Di caprio, Antonio Banderas and Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain?

Fassbender's not aging well, he already looks like he's in his mid 40's.
by The_Genteel_Gentile
A good decade older than his actual age. Which is why I don't think Fassbender will be next in line for James Bond when Daniel Craig finally hangs it up even though he'd otherwise be perfect. I'd like Matthew Goode to put on some muscle and have a go at 007 personally, but it sounds like Henry Cavill is in first position. Fassbender's all thin skinned and wrinkly around his eyes, mouth and forehead. Just say no to cigarettes. Hardly immortal.
-
Whatever that actor's name is. Scottish. And YES to Ray Stevenson or Kevin Durand as Kurgan. Oded Fehr for Ramirez.
-
I can see that point, its a good one. Fassbender actually could be an inspired choice for either Ramirez or the Kurgan. My fear is that they cast too young looking for McLeod. Remember, people lived harder lives in the 1500s, and Immortals become immortal upon their first death. They played that up big time in the Highlander television series. There were Immortals that were still children in physicality, and others who were brain damaged at the time they became Immortals. Conner McLeod, ACCORDING to the logic and setup of Gregory Widen's Highlander, was in his late 20s at the youngest, perhaps as old as 35. Fassbender, if they started filming tomorrow, would be perfectly acceptable and believable as Connor McLeod.
-
He looks so much like Christopher Lambert. And he's a good actor. Kevin Durand and Ray Stevenson are also great picks for the Kurgan. Side note, I was watching Highlander on cable tonight. So this is oddly topical
-
Robb Stark. Jon Snow. Those two could be the top contenders. Period. Not to mention half a dozen other actors on GOT.
-
and died.
-
Connor - Triple H The Kurgan - Batista Of course the obvious choice from that group would be Drew McIntyre since he's the only one that could pull off the Scots brogue ... I'm going back to my room and play with my dolls now ...
-
I watched the first one and was like HOLY SHIT this is genius story. I watched the second one and was like THA FUCK IZ DIS SHIIIT? I watched the third one and was like, well... yeah ok... Samurai Jack in dis bitch. I watched some of the tv show and shit and was decently satisfied. I'd love to see Jane be the new highlander but that might be a little too obvious a choice. Maybe Pierce, whats his face, the guy... Oh right, Guy Pierce.... He'd be my choice.
-
Reynolds is a solid choice? What the fuck are you smoking buddy? I don't hate him as an actor, but he's all wrong for this. And the charm of the first film is that it's low budget, and works.
-
You pick up the accent, considering the guys immortal he would head to the states at some point, it's not like you want to stay in scotland forever eating deep fried mar bars and watching hooligans kick fuck out of each other on a Saturday. I like reynolds but I would rather see Kevin McKidd, Butler or Stevenson. On a side note, good luck to Chelsea tonight....
-
It will never happen, but I saw him in an episode of Alcatraz and he really looked like a young Clancy Brown. Mads Mickleson will probably get the role.
-
They need to find a Scottish actor.

He's British, not Scottish, but he'd be cool. They could have Connor spend some time in China and learn martial arts.
-
I mean he's a hell of an actor and the guy has beat all of his demons. I wish they could give him another shot at BullsEye, done the right way instead of the shit they did before. Back on point, Farrell is Irish, in good shape, and a great actor....of course they give it to Reynolds. I just can't see it. Cut this things head off before they waste the money on this bomb
-
Deadpool? Green Lantern? Puh-leaze!
-
No Queen. No Connery. No Movie. I bet my rare Michael Kamen Highlander score CD that this will be a disaster of rare proportions.
-
Did you ever watch the movie sober? Every time Christopher Lambert opened his mouth, my rectum puckered into a tight little knot. That's a quite a bit of stress for a single film to induce. The concept is okay, the writing less so, but let's be honest here, every moment that didn't have Connery or Brown in it was little better than what you'd expect from a UCLA student film project. I still haven't decided if I like Fresnadillo or not. His resume isn't exactly inspiring. Still, while 28 Week Later might not be the best example of cinema ever made it was at least watchable. For the most part.
-

I agree that a Highlander remake could very well be awesome
by eveelcapitalist
Just not with Ryan Reynolds. Not at all. Someone above recommended the dude that played Thor. He'd be...better, certainly. But it needs to be someone who could very well look like he's worn out from centuries of living. Fuck it, might as well put Liam Neeson in the role. He *was* awesome in Taken. I vote Antonio Banderas as Ramirez. He's at least a genuine Spaniard and has done kick ass action movies. Jason Statham as Kurgen?
-
Burning villages, killing the men, raping the women, selling the children. We didn't have to hear about it or see it. You somehow know Kurgan did it more times than he remembers and he is trapped in the soft ass 20th century. I love how he is always shot in these tight, claustrophobic angles, like you can't escape him. Fucking awesome filmmaking.
-
They could replace Queen for the reboot.
-
Connor MacLeod: I cannot swim you Spanish peacock. Ramirez: I'm not Spanish, I'm Egyptian. Connor MacLeod: You said you were from Spain! You're a liar! Ramirez: You have the manners of a goat and you smell like a dung-heap. And you've no knowledge whatsoever of your potential. Now, get out!
-
French descent, as the French and the Scottish had long been allies.
-
He can train McLeod in the use of a magic switchblade. ORRALE!
-
It's not a real highlander movie unless I see some bush.
-
They're gonna need to set some money aside in the budget for some high quality merkins.
-
No....no, no, no, no, no. If you're going to fuck up this reboot that badly, you might as well go ahead and cast HHH from the WWE as the Kurgan and get this abortion straight to DVD so we don't even have to suffer through the trailer in the cinema.
-
They say that the only way to kill an immortal is to chop off their head. Fine. But what if a ten ton weight falls out of the sky and turns said immortal into a greasy puddle? How's he gonna come back from that? Is he just going to spontaneously regenerate his matter on a cellular level or will the weight bounce off him like Superman? Not that I want a remake, but maybe they could define the rules a bit better this time around.
-
Ryan Reynolds CANNOT do action to save his life, he's terrible at it - look at Blade 3. A reboot could be good though, just not with him, and as long as they drop every bit of bullshit baggage the sequels & tv show dropped on our heads. Why not just get Lambert to play Ramirez? Just no Reynolds screwing it up like he did GL.

Fresnadillo's 28 Weeks Later was wonderful. The first twenty minutes alone are classic. Ryan Reynolds is SO wrong for Highlander.
by batfunk
-
Why not? He's aged pretty well. Every time I see him in something he seems like he's in pretty good shape.<br /> <br /> But if we're talking trendy celebs, why not Vin Diesel as Kurrigan. Whoever you cast, it needs to be one of those villains with a raspy voice like Michael Wincott in 'The Crow' or Brown in the original medieval Terminator rip off.
-
Connor's adopted son from Highlander 3 turns out to be immortal, Duncan finds him and trains him against some bad ass villain. They can't replace Clancy Brown as The Kurgan so they shouldn't even try.
-
Same clan, different vintage.
-
McCleod should be played by an unknown. Maybe someone who's only done TV. Someone like Kit Harington from Game of Thrones. Although the natural choice would be a scot so Kevin McKidd could work. Kurgan should be played by Jason Momoa. He has the physical presence and brutality to make it work as long as they use a good fight choreographer. I just hope whoever plays him doesn't try to imitate the Clancy Brown voice. They all end up sounding like Mr Crabs. Ramirez should be played by someone familiar. A big name to woo the crowds. Connery was perfect for the original so I doubt they can nail this casting as good again. I always liked the idea of using Lambert for Ramirez. He's aged well and shares some of Connerys playful qualities. May not be mainstream enough. Whoever they cast this is going to be difficult to get right. Not hopeful. After all there can be...
-
Butler will be GREAT in the lead!!!!! Neither of them bring in box office so it doesn't matter which from a studio standpoint... But for the betterment of the movie... PLEASE CAST GERARD!!!
-
IF this has to happen.
-
except for GL, which should have been avengers like in execution but ended up being a turd. but its not entirely his fault. He's wrong for McCloud. There's a good couple of other suggestions here on this thread from talk backers. No one is screaming out for Reynolds. Try not alientating fans of the movies ( well the first one!) and the tv series. sometimes we get it right!
-
Agreed about Gerard Butler, that would be great casting of a new Connor MacLeod. Someone mentione Javier Bardem for the Ramirez part, but I reckon he'd make a really good Kurgan. Still, saying that, I'd rather they didn't remake Highlander. It's a great cheesy, but earnest, 80's movie.

by rakesh patel
Its because the sequels were so dire. the first movie and the TV series stand by themselves Actually i have more love for the tv series as it expanded the universe. much as the Stargate tv series did off the movie. I dont like remakes as a whole. on the rare occasion they are made, at least make them better then the original. If it can't be beaten, don't bother. Casting Reynolds in this, screams stinker.

If they're going to do this, they might as well do it properly. Take the basic premise (immortal Scotsman, wise mentor, villainous villain, sword fights, beheadings, quickening, Scottish landscapes), but go in whatever direction seems best. I'd prefer more time with the immortals as they all head toward the Gathering over centuries. In the original, we only have five Immortals and two of those are only brief appearances in the present. And yet Fasial and Kastagir are two of the last five survivors. They've lived and fought for centuries to get to New York, which makes them badass as all hell, and the original doesn't really convey that. Similarly, the original just had MacLeod in Scotland, then briefly in Boston and WWII Europe before being in New York. We don't see him take his first head, or any of the other stuff he did to survive to the Gathering. So, if they're doing a reboot, my view would be: more immortals, more flashbacks, bigger scope. If they want to change the ages, nationalities or even identities of the characters (though MacLeod still has to be a highlander, obviously), that's cool, as long as the script is good and it works. Oh, and they should still open with two guys having a sword fight in a car park with no explanation given at all at that stage.

Why remake something that is for the most part a cult classic just to remind everyone that the original is better to an audience that doesnt give a fuck. For instance, the fucking 'Total Recall' remake will probably only make money from people who know nothing or havent seen Verhoevens classic and the true fans will never get close to it unless its actually a meaningful remake like JC's 'The Thing'. It makes no logical sense unless its a new vision that works by itself to the point where you arent comparing the remake to a previous interpretation. I have a feeling this will just be like the rest of the pointless waste of time remakes such as 'Conan'. All this shit hasn't doesn't even bring in enough box office to justify all these remakes. Sometimes there is potential like Snyder's 'DOTD' but even that wasn't memorable even if it was quality. I'll end my rambling with this.. I understand that Hollywood will make money of easy properties with not a care if it will become a great remake but at least stop fucking with properties that had a niche audience to begin with. What's next? A 'Big Trouble in Little China' remake? Fucked up enough is that if they did that it would make money off people who never even saw the original but ignorantly would pay to make it a hit ala the HORRIBLE 'Titans' remake. Made enough money to warrant a shitty sequel. Of course the 80's Clash was pretty shitty but somehow the remake made enough money to warrant more shit... I'm sick of it.

There's not going to be a Green Lantern 2. Nor will there be a Justice League movie. (Leastways, not one you'd want to see.)
by NeonFrisbee
Oh, they'll probably get around to slapping together some kind of Justice League movie to compete with the Avengers franchise, but they'll rush it, hire hacks, and wind up shitting out an embarrassing film that shits all over the comics, the fans, the audience, and everyone else. Sadly, aside from Nolan's Batman (which some trolls recently started to pretend isn't good for some strange reason I suspect is directly related to the living perpetually within the mother's basement of the soul) I think the ship has sailed on the possibility of a GOOD live-action DC Universe. As much as we all want it to be, Zack the Hack's involvement has already rendered Superman inert. It would take a miracle at this point.
-
Much as I love the Queen music (which I do) the emotional music backbone to Highlander comes from Michael Kamen's beautiful themes and sweeping score. Queen didn't produce that much music for Highlander really - what they did was excellent but Kamen's score is fucking fantastic. Recasting? If it's going to happen then an Damien Molony who was fantastic in the British Being Human series 4 as Connor, Ray Stevenson as the Kurgan and Timothy Dalton as Ramirez. Gerard Butler is a fucking terrible actor and if you were going for a known Scottish actor as Connor then Kevin McKidd - though he is too old - not just for the part but for a franchise about immortality. The music will be the impossible thing to beat.
-
A few particular generations of people from the 80s and early 90s gave a fuck about Highlander and the movie was fine. I won't say its a classic that will never get old but it was its own legacy of films that was treasured for the most part by people off that era. Do kids these days really give a fuck about a remake of an 80s fantasy/cheesefest? They don't but somehow they will feel intrigued enough to go see it, oblvious of the original or why it was great. I guarantee you we will have hardly any scenes of McCloud doing his immortal epicness throughout the ages and whoever sees it will be people that never saw the original and wont give a fuck. I'm not sure if I made my point and I am not sober at all so feel free to hate on me, agree, or tell me to STFU.

Selma Blair as Liz Sherman is good casting Henry Cavill as Superman is good casting Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury is the case of a comic book company rail-roading an iconic actor into signing a huge mutually profitible contract by stealing his image back in 2002 which resulted in good casting. Ryan Reynolds is an attempt to appeal to late 20's to 30's moms, the "teen" market and the post American pie generation of "doods". If nothing else Highlander was violent and weird. Cast Nikolaj Coster-Waldau...Benjamin Walker

Butler for Connor McLeod is a good choice. And Colin Farrell could actually play the Egyptian Spaniard Ramirez. And Kurgan should be played by maybe Christian Bale. Or a shaved gorilla.

He needs to be an every man without huge muscles. Seriously, if you were immortal why work out? If you have the sword training you need and a medium-normal build you don't need to have crazy huge muscles. And actually, Conner could be a fatty and it would be okay. So I nominate "Hurley" from Lost or Jonah Hill.

Its just a shame that due to development hell that Robert Rodriguez is no longer in the running to direct it.

ALL IMMORTALS HAVE PARENTS! But you just very rarely see them! There have been several appearances of an immortals parents in the tv series. One episode had a young teen girl who didnt know she was an immortal but then became one after a car crash. Her father was seen all through out the episode including at the faked funeral. In another episode there was a young male wanna be magician and he lived with his mum. The only reason you don't see most of the parents is because we rarely see the beginning of many of the immortals lives and their parents have been dead for centuries. Love the first Highlander movie a lot and the tv series expanded the universe excellently at times. Ryan Reynolds is absolutely not the actor to play the immortal Highlander. The character needs to glow with experience, wisdom, world weariness. He needs to be rugged and look like he was born in the highlands of scotland. That is not Ryan Reynolds!! Javier Bardem would be a fantastic choice for ramires. Really fantastic! You probably should keep the music of queen if possible. Also if you want a franchise then there have to be hundreds of immortals still left and you cant end with Connor winning "the prize".

Will Hollywood ever stop trying to make Ryan Reynolds happen?
by blackwood
I don't dislike the man's performances, but he's a product no one particularly cares about. Has anyone ever gone to see a Ryan Reynolds movie because of Ryan Reynolds? He's a non-entity charmer with a great body that Hollywood seems determined to pretend is a major star. It's really weird.

I did not care for the original but the concept is really cool and begs for an engrossing visual experience.

You people dissing Reynolds are probably the same peole who dissed Evans & Heath Ledger
by BrannigansLaw
Oh, the outcry and uproar! Chris Evens as Captain America!? WTF??? The myopic couldn't really accept that the guy was an actor playing a wise cracking character. I swear... some of you are like the soap opera junky who wants to slap Susan Lucci when you see her at the mall for the evil thing she did as Erica Kane. FTR, Ryan Reynolds can handle this Highlander role. You shouldn't judge him by teh suck that whas Green Lantern; the movie failed him, not the other way around.
-
...you have a fresh take on the material. A friend once threw out the idea that if you were to revisit the material, it might be fun to follow the story of more than one immortal. Post-Game Of Thrones, this might be a fun riff on the concept rather than just re-hash the story while the audience waits for Christophe Lambert's cameo and for Ryan Reynolds to say the catchphrase.
-
Two Words Nikolai Valuev prove me wrong.
-
they should have gone with a Scot or at least a believable Scot. I'm imagining how cool and unexpected it would be if they had someone unassuming and non-buff in the role like Ewan McGregor or even better, Robert Carlyle
-
"at least a believable Scot" Reynolds, aka Mac Raghnaill. Come on. If we can put up with Liam Neeson's "American" accent multiple times then we can certainly handle at least one movie with Reynolds running around in a kilt.

Keanu Reeves as a Scot highlander!!! It would be awesome
by Lloyd Fenton
-
Once the Kurgan is defeated, and Connor is the last of the immortals, it doesn't leave things open to expansion. If the studio wanted a sequel, really, they'd have to consider committing to two films (like Harry Potter, The Hobbit etc). Doing this would allow the filmmakers to widen the scope of the film with more/longer flashbacks, perhaps take things out of the US for a while, and maybe even setting the Quickening back in Scotland (it IS called Highlander, after all).
-
Watching it now.
-
Butler is too old and, more importantly, too physically imposing. Connor needs to be younger and slighter, but with pain in his eyes. He's a tragic character, chasing the prize of living and dying on his own terms. Ultimately I'd honestly prefer an unknown. Leave the big names for the other roles, which would further reinforce Connor's underdog status. Just keep the actor old world. Lambert's accent didn't bother me that much for exactly that reason. It's a major point of the film that it moves from Europe to the US. For that reason, I can't support Reynold's involvement. Oh, and for God's sake don't cast a wrestler for the Kurgan! Here's an idea, why don't they actually cast a Russian?

If they're going through with this, have Ramirez teach Macleod to read, speak other languages etc.
by davidwebb
It would take up minutes, if not seconds of screentime, but it's a minor thing I've always wanted added to the canon. It's something that brings Connor up from his Highland roots to being more worldly, to prepare him for the lifetimes he has ahead of him.

They have beaten this horse into the ground, there is nothing wrong with the original. A remake wont hurt the original. It wont really add anything to it except more interest. Not going to bitch about the remake trend, but objectively i say it's kinda a waste, and no the remake will not be better, certainly not better than everything highlander has managed to do so. Beaten Horse. E.O.F.S.

its obvious having your own franchise affords you a great payday, its the well that never runs dry and keeps on giving ( until you run it into the ground)and separates the man from the boys and notches you up a level. GL failed, he's going to destroy another one if he gets his hands on it. one is bad luck ryan, two is just fucking suspicious. Hollywood execs, just give him look whos talking remake franchise. thre great thing about that ryan, is you wont even have to act, just read out the fucking lines.

Mad Tom Hardy as 'The Kurgan' and 'Merlin's Eoin Macken and Santiago Cabrerra as 'Connor MacLeod' and 'Ramirez'
by Nerfee
With 'Doctor Who's Karen Gillan as 'Mah Bonny Heather!' and Scar-Jo would pe perfect in the 'Brenda' role of modern-day GF. It would be cool to see a young MacLeod and Ramirez going down through the ages and getting in adventures and scrapes. That's why I thought of the lads from 'Merlin', as they have good chemistry on-screen. Eoin Macken looks like an old-fashioned, devil-may-care swaggering hero, whereas Cabrerra comes off slightly more sophisticated- perfect for Ramirez. Pic: http://tinyurl.com/d7y3hol
-
on the fucking dick heads that green lit this fucking horror show. with all the thousands of great books and stories out there some ass can't come up with a decent script? fucking disgraceful.
-
can't we see The Blade Itself come to life? nope. never happen.
-
What a joke.
-
'McCloud', my arse.
-
'and Connor MacLeod is supposed to be 18 or so at the time of his death so all the ballyhooing about guys over 40 is pretty stupid.' Why do so many people think that immortals have their ages frozen at the time of their first would-be death? This is a common belief, but it has no basis in the movie or in the script. Indeed, in the background story that Widen, Bellwood and Ferguson worked out, the Kurgan discovered he was immortal when he had his head dashed against a rock by his father when he was a young child, and Ramirez tells MacLeod that the stopping of the aging process is a 'flowering that happens at random' for any given immortal. I mean, think about it, given the high rate of infant mortality, you'd be seeing all these six year old immortals wandering the earth. Simply isn't true. MacLeod is absolutely not supposed to have the body of an eighteen year old.
-
Here's how I'd do it: Have several main characters rather than one, and do not make it obvious who's going to win. In all honesty, a proper treatment of the Highlander IP would be best served by a mini series, not a single movie. (I don't think a trilogy of movies would work because the IP is not strong enough to convince the general public to come and see a non-self-contained first chapter.)
-
...that Mulcahy originally wanted Kurt Russell and Catherine Mary Stewart to star as MacLeod and Brenda Wyatt in the original, but Russell turned it down on the advice of Goldie Hawn in favour of Big Trouble in Little China, and Stewart became unavailable for other reasons. Roxanne Hart is the only major cast member who really doesn't suit the role in 'Highlander'. She looks too frumpy to be the love interest.
-
'But what if a ten ton weight falls out of the sky and turns said immortal into a greasy puddle? ' In the novelization (which is actually pretty decent for a tie-in, and has some nice scenes with the Kurgan and Kastagir that didn't make it into the final script), Ramirez and MacLeod speculate about what might have happened if MacLeod's clansmen had proceeded with their plans to burn him. Ramirez doesn't know for sure, and advises Connor not to try it.
-
MacCleod - Kevin McKidd, Kurgan- Dwayne Johnson, Ramirez- Antonio Banderas. Yes, BANDERAS. "But, but...he's too old especially for a movie about immortality!" Sean Connery says 'fuck you'.
-
Ryan Reynolds does not have the world weary demeanor of a Connor MacCloud. Shit I'd sooner cast him as the Kurgan
-
That would make it interesting.
-
especially a fuckin reboot. only Nolan has succeeded at that.
-
Okay... so the Scottish part might be a stretch...

I don't see Reynolds in the role, at all, but this is one reboot that is OK by me
by wcolbert
If only for the fact that the original could have been even better with a bit more polish and modern effects. However, I'm also fully aware of the result of most if not all reboot attempts, so I'm weary. It just feels like Highlander is one franchise that would only benefit from an update. Mind you, I DON't want a "re-imagining"...any time I hear those words out of an exec or director, I immediately make the choice to close my wallet and never pay to see their movie. "Re-imagining" almost invariably means fucking up what worked, and fixing what wasn't broken to begin with - there's always some asshole writer/director out there who is just itching to put his own stamp on things. Stop being so selfish and start being faithful (though some changes for the better are understandable). What I want is an update - what would the Highlander have been if the same people had made it today instead of in the 1980's. THAT's the movie I want to see. Not someone's "version" of it. "So, here's an idea - McCleoud is now Matoomba, and he is played by Wesley Snipes. Instead of swords he'll carry nunchucks. BRILLIANT!"...I can see it now. And I can do without the Queen, personally. Stick it in the credits or playing at a club he walks by, just to keep the fans happy, but booming it obnoxiously across the theater during some montage is a bit too anachronistic. That said...Reynolds really doesnt fit the role. At all. i know, they want a draw - not an unknown, but I just feel that this is one time when an unknown would be far better. And for fuck's sake, not Christian Bale. No. He already raped John Connor. Let him do his bat growl, but leave Highlander alone.

Richard Armitage?

Sorry to report but I watched Highlander again a few months ago on Netflix...
by NHRonin
...and it sucks. Bad acting, outside of the Queen songs bad music and the fights are laughable even by 1980s standards. The premise is great though and I welcome a reboot of this series.
-
Having rewatched both recently on blu-ray, whereas Robocop seems a little thin and slow for an action flick in this day and age, the only thing Highlander needs is a Godfather-level restoration and an effects upgrade. 'Cause when MacLeod receives "The Prize," the animation is complete ass. Worked okay in the mid-80s, but it's embarrassing today. And yeah, the Queen-enfused soundtrack really added to the epic feel of the movie. Nowadays there'll be a hundred and one alterna-crap "power ballads" that will all sound EXACTLY the same and NONE of them will have jack-all to do with the movie. Actually, they shouldn't re-do Robocop either. Say what you will about Verhoven, he didn't turn his satiric social commentary into the kind of sledgehammer polemic that we get from Hollyweird nowadays. It'll probably suck. Odd that both of these properties had inspired first outings that lead to a string of increasingly janky sequels, depressingly bad TV versions and even cartoons. Proof that sometimes folks need to fucking quit when they're ahead.
-
Highlander was an awesome movie as a seed of a story that needed to be much bigger, so Im open to a remake. Someone mentioned Sly as the Kurgen and I have to laugh. The Kurgen must be a giant, Sly is a midget. Tough casting on that one, I wouldnt go with Dwayne Johnson but I might look around pro wrestling for the part. Any wrestler with a twisted, ominous sense of humor? Also, for the record, Ramirez was Egyptian, and casting him is critical. Unless they change the story structure, the casting of Connor doesnt worry me too much, most of the movie is played out with the supporting caste. Oh, wait... Hollywood. Planet of the Apes, New Trek, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Godzilla... Well Im not worried. By the time they are done with it, ppl will think they remade Highlander 2.
-
A must have. Seriously.
-
No Clancy Brown, no $7.50 theater ticket for me.
-
It's 'the Kurgan', people. Not Kurgen or Kurgin or Kurgonn or whatever else you might invent.
-
I like Reynolds but he is a awful choice for Conor McCloud. The wise cracks will ruin it. Fassbender would be my choice....
-
I don't trust him.
-
Holy shit, people, some of you are really bad at this. It's: Connor MacLeod. Juan Ramirez (Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez). The Kurgan. Sunda Kastagir. Iman Fasil. Osta Vasilek. No McCloud, no Kurgun, no Romeerez or whatever else you want to come up with. Sorry to keep banging on about this. It just bugs me.

This fucking troll cannot carry a movie. I mean any movie. That includes comedy, action, sci-fi, whatever. He is best suited for minor side-character work. Maybe a bumbling cunt who occasionally appears to piss people off. That's his acting range: pissing people off. This guy needs to just fuck off. He is a lifeless, soulless hack, and I'd love to know how many cocks, assholes and ballsacks he has had to suck to get any 'leading' roles. This fruit cannot lead his way out of a woman's toilet. Yeah, lame, I know. That's the best I could come up with for this doofus. That's all I can be bothered to come up with. And of all people: Why cast this fucking fruity clown to play a hard-assed immortal wielding a fucking sword? WTF?? Please Hollywood. Fuck off. Stop feeding us this pig shit and get one of the hemsworth brothers, if you really need to have a fruit in your movies. At least they have some acting range. But in all seriousness, what happened to good old fashioned casting auditions? Get one of the Game of Thrones guys. They have some acting ability. Stop spraying your fucking diarrhea everywhere and going out of your way to piss people off. Cunts.
-
The range. I could feel his acting soul....I'll stop now. Fuck this retard.
-
Maybe they should get Jerry Stiller to play Ramirez. And Hulk Hogan as the Kurgan. Geez, what an awful choice...

Roll call Gerard Butler as McLeod Javier Bardem as Ramirez Michael Shannon as The Kurgan FFS I like Reynolds, but he is not right for this role.

I hate the movies and tv series on so very many levels. Lambert playing a Highlander, Connery playing a Spaniard (or as pointed out above, an Egyptian who lived in Spain...ah, f*ck it. Don't care), Macleods fighting Frasers (at least get the history correct - is it really that difficult?), then a laughably miscast Londoner in the TV series who doesn't even try to mask his ludicrously inappropriate accent. An insult to the intelligence of any true highlander, this inane steaming seven coiler will become even more wretched (if that's at all possible, which I highly doubt) with Ryan Reynolds in it. May God help us all.
-
...and Connor is in no way a highland name.

I wasn't keen on Ryan Reynolds until I saw him interviewed on Top Gear
by Nerfee
He was just funny and self-deprecating. He won me over. Not sure about Highlander, though. Unless it were a total re-imagining. Reynolds might play a cowboy who becomes an immortal, or a soldier from the Revolutionary War. Or I suppose he could start off Scottish and end-up North-American sounding. It would be no more ridiculous than a Scotsman ending-up sounding like some cackling Benelux lothario...
-
already?
-
It would work...
-
Meh...not really. I'm a big HIGHLANDER fan. Even though it was a cluster-fuck I learned to enjoy HIGHLANDER 2 somehow (and after watching the behind the scenes doc on the DVD I don't see how it could have been anything other than a cluster-fuck). Didn't mind HIGHLANDER 3, either and, for some reason, I love the snimated series. The TV series is what killed me on it. Just terrible. Couldn't bear it. Tried many, many times. Anyway, a reboot of this mythos wouldn't bother me. And Ryan Reynolds has a certain charm to him that I dig so that could be good. Someone suggested Mickey Roarke as the Kurgan and I whole-heartedly agree. BTW: Ramirez was an EGYPTIAN by way of Spain via Scottland : )
-
...I know it's cool to hate on that movie but maybe see it first. It's really quite good.

The Reboot is another nail in the coffin of a fuckin' perfect movie! THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ONLY ONE!
