AIN'T IT COOL with Harry Knowles: Episode 7: Vampires, Seth Grahame-Smith & DARK SHADOWS

Published at: May 17, 2012, 12:16 p.m. CST

Hey folks, Harry here with our guest Seth Grahame-Smith.  We had a lot of fun shooting in the basement as you're sure to see.   But first I decided to chat a bit about Vampires and just set the tone for talking about   them pesky neckers.   This also has one of my fave gags we've come up with so far.   So much fun.   Here ya go...

    Posters

    by JediChris1138

WOW that is an AMAZING collection of posters you've got. How do you find the space to hang all of those? They're incredible!

    What about post-modern?

    by JediChris1138

Interview with the Vampire gave way to True Blood style Vampires - the only place for the films to go was to turn them on their ear. Where will they go next? A vastly more realistic portrayal? What happens next? There are lots of questions for filmmakers to ask at this point.

WHEN IS THIS EGO TRIP GOING TO END

by greigy just wanted to say

You would actually gain a hell of a lot of respect if you woke up to the fact that this massive ego trip is being creatively and suportively fuelled by sycophants and professional ass kissers. It's simply not good enough. End of story period. You are not a charasmatic presenter. You do not have a likeable screen presence and you certainly do not project authority about your subject... It is dictionary definition SMUG and CONCEITED. Not to mention PATRONSING Live in your bubble and keep telling yourself you hangers on are telling you the truth about this train wreck. I'm not having a dig to be a prick. I'm telling the truth (as I see it). Do the professional friends do the same?

What happened to creepy, choppah and the rest??

    by paul burnett

Was there a mass banning or a mass walkout?

  • due to general frustration with the way the site is being run. The breaking point, I believe, was when an unknown admin started actually altering people’s posts to make them look like they had said things that they had not. Mostly it was in the Dick Clark obituary thread. Also the thread for Harry’s review of the fake Prometheus script. asimovlives has been absent for a long time also. It’s been quite drab around here of late. We need some new crazy people to step up to the mic.

    Great work Harry...

    great article and vid...

    by misnomer

I've always loved the iconography of the vampire, but have yet to see a vampire film that I've truly loved. In the end, the above spurred me on to write/illustrate my own graphic novel. Been working on it for over a year, naively underestimating the work involved to boot!

  • May 17, 2012, 5:19 p.m. CST

No mention of Gary Oldmans Dracula?

    by Logan_1973

Coppola's DRAC is one of the most underrated films ever made. And I just noticed the FIFTH ELEMENT dude behind the movie screen. Awesome.

I pity the interviewees having to play along with dumb shit

    by Jaster Mareel

=I think i just got ass-raped by a sleestak=....UGH! Anyway, clearly this guy is a fan who made it and that makes the interview interesting if not very in-depth. Buit thhis won't change the fact that the movie is widely regarded as complete shit, even though it probably wasn't this guy's fault.

    by jimmy

Harry, you WERE on a roll. This one was just lame. But, to be fair...Dark Shadows didn't sell me, so any promo torwards is kind of boring. Also, nice fondling of the Kronos replica. To be honest, you should explore more of the segment of these artifcats you have, pad it w as much background as possible.Call " Fondling the Goods".

I agree that these are just not good enough...

    by Darth_BaIIs

If I saw this Rubbish on this site back in 2001, I would have never revisited the site. Where is the COOL NEWS in these episodes? Where are the scoops, spoilers & leaks that nowhere else has? This site is like the band 311, kings of rock and roll beast mode in 1996-2001, and complete hack rubbish right now.

SGS seems like a nice guy

    by bob_uzumaki

but I blame him for Dark Shadows being awful. It could have been a magnificent film with a better script.

    Good Show

    by dark4666

I just want to mention I like the show. I like seeing guest interviews, I like the music, the set is fantastic. I think Harry is doing a fine job as host. His enthusiasm for film is so obvious and fresh and the show re-inforces all the positive and magical things about movies. Good job.

  • May 18, 2012, 7:13 a.m. CST

    I'm also enjoying these eps

    by rakesh patel

i got no complaints, harry does well interviewing. Seth Grahame-Smith comes across as a fan boy and all around nice guy. Haven't seen Dark Shadows as yet but I'll catch it on DVD/ BR

  • Because he really made himself look like a total tool in that talkback...oh. He didn't even pay attention to what was being said in this video, before a pathetic attempt at trolling. Ha what a dumbshit.

  • May 18, 2012, 10:46 a.m. CST

The problem with this show is that Harry doesn't respect his audience

    by sunwukong86

He talks to us like none of us know anything about film or film history. I get that this show is supposed to be fun, the target audience probably already knows all the stuff he talks about

  • May 18, 2012, 1 p.m. CST

I've been a hardass on this site, and

    by TheGangBangTheory

even was banned once (or twice, and not fairly by the way), but I like this show. Like I said last time, the opening title and 80's horror/comedy music sets a nice pop culture mood. It really needs to be a half hour so lots more pop culture can be worked in. Many of us fanboys who have to work regular schmuck jobs are jealous of your getting to do what you love Harry. Some of us will hate, but some like me will tip his beer and Jack D. to you. Keep them coming.

    HARRY, INTERVIEW YOUR POPS!

    by Mr.Macphisto

I was thinking how fascinating it would be to hear from Father Geek, the man who inspired all of this. Get him out of the booth and into the chair, good sir!

  • May 18, 2012, 1:59 p.m. CST

    harry, re: your posters

    by billyhitchcock1

have you ever had any kind of exhibition of all of them? i would really love a section of AICN which was just a gallery of all your posters. seeing some of them makes me shiver! at the very least have you got a list?

  • May 18, 2012, 2:07 p.m. CST

I second that. INTERVIEW YOUR POPS!

    by Talkbacker with no name

  • May 18, 2012, 6:18 p.m. CST

I'm sorry be a dick but...

    by Kremzeek

This is the first time I've actually seen Harry in action (been coming to AICN for years too!)... and buddy... I'm so sorry to say, but - there's no charisma. I think you're pretty fucking knowledgable when it comes to all things film - really I do! But.. damn, I'm now seeing why you allowed that completely dry, non-charismatic "Scriptgirl" on here for so long. Minus her chest (which was lovely), she had no redeeming qualities in front of the camera. Gotta say it's the same here. And... I truly, sincerely hate saying that. I think AICN needs to get someone with some actual presence and know-how in front of the camera. You'll be GREAT heading up the show, but... ugh... get behind the camera, bro! Be Affleck: One seriously shitty actor (except for Phantoms, yo), but pretty talented behind the lens. Oh, but Papa Knowles was great! My 2 cents... which I know isn't even worth that! =)

    by Mr.Macphisto

I "Third" (or Fourth) the FatherGeek interview

    by MovieDeal

I think it would make a fascinating read to see about how the various genres both in film and book have changed during the years. I'm sure he has very many stories to tell. And, I would consider myself to be someone who would look forward to that. Perhaps give him a regular column to himself to wax nostalgic. I would read that in a heartbeat.

  • May 20, 2012, 5:32 a.m. CST

I've been trying to make out all the cars and I think I've figured some out,

    by Bedknobs and Boomsticks

despite the image being blurry: Speed Racer - Mach 5, Beatles - Yellow Submarine, Scooby Doo - Mystery Machine, Green Hornet - Black Beauty, A-Team/B.A.'s van, James Bond - Connery's Aston Martin DB 5 & Moore's submersible Lotus Esprit S1, Bandit's Trans Am [and a cop car which may be that of Buford T. Justice?], , Dukes of Hazzard - General Lee, Blade Runner - Spinner, Max's Pursuit Special? And though I can't see them, I'd guess you might have a Herbie, a Batmobile, the Ecto-1, and the S&H Gran Torino? Also, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is on the shelf, and Silent Running - Huey Dewey And Louie in front of the drive-in screen.

  • May 20, 2012, 5:34 a.m. CST

And a yellow copter I don't know from what,

    by Bedknobs and Boomsticks

and something that looks sort of like a flying car from The Jetsons.

    Bitter much "banned"?

    by Mr.Macphisto

When people were talking about internet trolls in their parents basements they clearly weren't talking about Harry...

  • I really hate how it's designed to be like twitter now, and people post their message as a subject, then no message. Just show us the comments. I'm sick of clicking blank comments. Click - nothing, poster was a twitter douche Click - nothing, poster was a twitter douche Click - nothing, poster was a twitter douche It's like getting rick-rolled for every comment. The old throw-everything-up-at-once forum was MUCH better.

    by Mr.Macphisto

I have no interest in having an internet troll agrument with someone who feels the need to slam a man that entertains most of us and works hard on his show. You don't like the show? You don't like the site? Change the channel, dude. Or are you too busy posting on a site you claim to dispise to log off?

    Well done Harry

    by Devilboi

The summer of '89 was one to remember. When Elfman's score filled the tiny Yorkdale Mall theatre at the beginning of Batman. Great memory gents!

  • It is very distracting on your tracking shots.
