Ample Sample Clips From PROMETHEUS' Score Are Now Online!!
The PROMETHEUS score from Marc Streitenfeld (with two tracks by Harry Gregson-Williams) is now available for purchase over at iTunes.
While you may well wish to wait until you've heard the entirety of the score in context with the picture before purchasing it, iTunes is offering some awesome samples of the music to whet your appetites...also brining us our first full sense of what the music for Scott's ALIEN psuedo-prequel-verse will sound like.
You can find the score for both purchase and sampling HERE! Do note, however, that some track titles may contain spoilage. I know Nordling purchased the score and was hoping to listen to it tonight, so perhaps he'll dodge into this Talkback after hearing it and offer a few thoughts?

because i refuse to join the ranks of apple cult drones. is there any other way to listen to these samples without infecting my computer with the itunes virus?
-
Listen to the track ''friend from the past''.
-
Yes.
-
...I can't believe this is what we get after Scott's amazing relationships with Vangelis, and Goldsmith, among others. This doesn't feel memorable as those scores did. I fear this is going to be old man Scott's attempt to fit in with the young directors. A lot of style (not much substance). I hope not...
-
Just purchased the soundtrack and track number 18. friend from the past, has the main theme to A L I E N at the start.
-
PS... I put my money on Rapace giving birth to the space jockey. It then grows fast (like the xeno did in ALIEN). And that tall ugly bald thing we see is actually her baby coming towards her (as per the music track title: HELLO MOMMY). I have a feeling the space jockeys stay dormant for centuries and need other creatures to come to this planet to reignite their existence so that they can begin to reseed or destroy planets as they want/need to again.
-
can you upload that track for us?
-
stoopid of me to ask. buying it now.

Thanks for that! I don't like how SYNTHY it sounds. There's no majesty in it like Goldsmith's same cue. I hope this movie ends up not disappointing.
-
Your welcome, I totally agree with you, overall though i quite like the score not as bad as i could have been.
-
yeah. This is ALIEN ZERO.

Well, the score sounds really really good. All the pieces are in place. God I hope this doesn't suck.

Shows an alien going down some guy's throat, a Space Jockey roughing someone up, and a weird little face hugger guy that looks like a cobra.

So sad....

IronEagle...you are so right...today's movie music is uninspired! This score feels like the same garbage Bryan Tyler would be hired to put on some b-grade summer movie.

FYI, Best Buy is stocking a FOX promotion (ALIEN and ALIENS Blu-rays for $9.99) with a $10 *movie money* code towards PROMETHEUS admission.

If you're planning to see it, that's like a free Blu-ray. http://forum.dvdtalk.com/blu-ray-bargains/601610-9-99-fox-titles-best-buy-prometheus-movie-cash.html https://www.activaterewards.com/prometheus/

and so does Ikira Ifukube.

Movie music is very forgettable these days for the most part. Lord of the Rings was a notable exception. The music in Prometheus should be ominous and understated, though (I haven’t listened to the score).

Form what I'm hearing, it doesn't hold a candle to Goldsmith's score.
by Henri Pouper
Of course, Goldsmith's score is easily one of the best film scores ever written, so expecting something that good out of today's anemic crop of movie composers really wouldn't make sense. Although it doesn't come within a country mile of having the ridiculous amount of *character* that Goldsmith's legendary 1979 soundtrack had (amazing use of the serpent, echoplex, didgeridoo, ram's horn, maracas, etc. for that Goldsmith hallmark of weird-ass noises, along with a couple of ultra-classic action cues in "Breakaway" and "The Droid" from the best action music composer in the business), this music for Prometheus does NOT sound like a bad score. Appropriately, it is highly discordant, atonal, and otherworldly, and a few tracks (e.g. "Engineers", "Try Harder", "Debris") actually sound very good. I'm optimistic; all signs indicate that Prometheus is set to be the second worthy entry into the Alien mythos (Aliens is a very good movie, but it's no Alien, not even close), and to my considerable surprise, the music seems to continue that trend. I'm not going to buy the soundtrack just yet -- my days of forking over money for a soundtrack without hearing the bulk of it first are long gone, ever since film scoring turned to ass after the heydays of Williams, Goldsmith, and Barry in the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s -- but I'll definitely be paying attention to it when I see the movie.

I hear a lot of "Alien" in that soundtrack. Also, in regards to "The Avengers" music...
by Chris
One of my favorite pieces of music from the composer who did "the avengers" is from the "judge dredd" soundtrack (block war), I swear to Odin that I heard a little bit of that score when Thor was kicking Loki's ass on top of Stark Tower.

The entire score is *out there* already if you have a look around. A bit showy in parts, but I liked it.

The era of great classically trained film composers is pretty much over.

The best is all behind us now.

I feel like the score pays homage to all the other Alien films. It falls very much in place with the rest of the films and there isn't a main theme or anything that gets replayed regularly. If anything, it reminded me a lot of Goldenthal's score for Alien 3, without the boy sopranos and the really crazy, noisy bits. That's not a dig on Goldenthal, Alien 3's score is my favorite of the five films. Prometheus stands very well on it's own, I just hope that it works within the context of the film.
-
Unfortunately, as far as I'm concerned, all of these tracks sound like they could have been created in about ten minutes using ProjectSAM's Symphobia 1 & 2, a copy of Kontakt 5 and a moderately-powered home computer (you composer nerds like myself probably already know what I'm talking about), even if you have no real music talent whatsoever. For about three grand, you too could have written the PROMETHEUS score. Don't believe me? Check this link: http://www.projectsam.com/Products/Feature-Products/1353</p><p> So ... that's depressing. I think the current state of film scores reflects the current state of the films themselves: they're corporate gigs that aren't designed for longevity, they're designed for front-loaded opening weekend bullshit. Don't rock the boat. Don't take a costly risk. Be vanilla. Vanilla means nobody will bitch about choosing vanilla, even if it's far from the best flavor. Can't wait for the studio system to finally implode ...

That one still gives me the willies!

You're mistaking my complaint for "the PROMETHEUS score sounds bad". I didn't say that. It sounds perfectly servicable, as far as I'm concerned, though I'm not sure which clips you think sound "killer" or why. But that's the problem with most of todays scores -- they sound "perfectly servicable" without attempting to elevate either themselves or the film they're featured in. I realize a movie's score is meant to underline what's going on onscreen, not overwhelm it, but quite a few scores from the past managed to enhance the movies they were featured in AND stand out on their own as great works of music, even becoming iconic in their own right. That doesn't really happen anymore.</p><p> It's even more depressing if you go to that link I provided and listen to a few of the Symphobia product demos. They sound EXACTLY like the PROMETHEUS score. Mind you, as an owner of both versions of Symphobia, I can tell you that it doesn't require a lot of skill to come up with that sound, either. Some of the presets are even titled similarly to the tracks on the PROMETHEUS soundtrack (or, at least, a hypothetical ALIEN sequel soundtrack), and it's really a one-note operation. You press a key and you get a trailer hit or a horn section riser or a looped action-sequence percussion section. And before you dismiss this, check out the user testimonials; you'll recognize quite a few names among them. And they all cop to using these products in their film scores.

FOR THE RECORD, YOU WOULD BE HARD PRESSED TO FIND A BIGGER, MORE DEDICATED FAN OF ALIEN --- AND THE GOLDSMITH SOUNDTRACK FOR ALIEN --- BUT I AM TELLING YOU, SOME OF THESE PROMETHEUS TRACKS ARE HITTING JUST THE RIGHT CHORDS. IN OTHER WORDS, A SENSE OF PURE
by Astronut
If you aren't able to sense that, then it's fairly obvious you have no ability to appreciate perfectly-suited composition, melody or vibe.

@astronaut - Inclined to agree! Still nothing as jarring as 'The Skeleton' here though (although listening in context in the theater will doubtless shut my pie-hole...)

You strike me as either someone who is trolling talkbacks, looking for an argument, or you're just that easily impressed. Even the most forgiving music lover on the planet would not be THAT fucking excited over this goddamn score. If you're actually the latter (I can't even imagine ...), then you probably also shit your pants over the TRON: LEGACY score, even though that was pretty much the two dudes from Daft Punk playing one-finger arp sequences with orchestral accompaniment. Also, since these are all 30-second previews, they all either start out with some brooding strings, a stinger or some percussion thingy -- they don't even really represent what the full cues sound like. Again, you can hear the SAME EXACT THING if you check out the Symphobia product page. That doesn't make any of this a bad thing, necessarily, but before you fully climax, you may wanna put this thing into its proper perspective ...
-
Some great cues in there; the sample clips don't really give much away. It is a well crafted and beautifully pitched score with some seriously ominous and nightmarish cues in there, that evoke Elliot Goldenthal's score work on Alien3, no bad thing. Great sound design and textural effects too. Can't wait to hear this in the movie.
-
some parts of the CE3K score....This project makes me more and more curious, I hope it pays off!
-
The answer is "no" to all three of those, in addition to the TRON comment. I would add that, for me to make a determination regarding my enjoyment/appreciation of something — in this case, a motion picture score— I don't need to hear every single minute from beginning to end. I never said "the entire thing is amazing," I stated that I thought some of the darker track samples sounded amazing. You strike me as someone who lives out his daily existence taking things far too seriously. Have some fun, be honest and don't be afraid to enjoy life to the fullest.
-
People can complain about winning a million dollars here, oh it was all 20's and not 100's. and it took to long to spend all those 20's cause it shoulda been 100's. Gotta love it!!! Oh they gave away to much, why see the movie now since i already saw 4 minutes worth of the 134 minutes Oh I could make that score in my basement it sucks so bad Oh her ass is flat (my favorite...) Oh the SJ is just a big bald guy Oh I already saw the ship crash into the other ship so I know the end already ( Ive seen the Enterprise blow up more than once people and it was still there at the end of the episode, its sci-fi remember????!!!!!) I could go on but hope I made my point...
-
my personal favorite : D
-
I said I love this place, and gotta love it! I love reading all the whining here, makes me LOL...
-
without even mentioning the movie. GOTTA LOVE IT!!!! LOL....
-
...meh, difficult to like without seeing the film obv or the full tracks, but not often found soundtracks that dont work standalone as the memorably good ones. shame as the trailer music sounded promising,Id hoped it would be more like that
-
At least the bit of it that I heard on iTunes. I was hoping for something more like Goldsmith's score on A L I E N. Although, the bits I've heard of the Prometheus score are not bad, and taken out of context of the film it is hard to really gauge how they will compliment the visuals and sound design.
-
That score is one of the stronger aspects of Alien 3.
-

@lv_426. re: I was hoping for something more like Goldsmith's score on A L I E N: track 13 *Friend from the past* begins outright with Goldsmith's ALIEN theme.
by justmyluck
The entire score is definitely for a horror movie and and ALIEN film, with plenty of Goldsmith-like dissonance.
