20th Century Fox is moving ahead with their plans for a follow-up to last summer's surprise RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (oh, come on... you were hopeful, but you didn't expect it to be that good). After bringing back original writers Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa to give the script a go, Scott Z. Burns has now been brought in to take a pass, says The Hollywood Reporter.
With the rise of the apes assumed to escalate even further in the sequel under Caesar's leadership, the fall of the human race will also quickly take hold, as seen by the quick spread of the disease right before RISE's end credits. Therefore, Burns' credit as the writer for Steven Soderbergh's CONTAGION makes him a good fit for the material, even if it does feel a bit naive to think that only people who have written films about the deadly spread of disease can do it again.
However, Burns also has THE INFORMANT! and THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM on his resume with no black marks to speak of, so it definitely feels as if RISE 2, or whatever they'll be calling it, is in perfectly capable hands.
