Kurt Russell And Sacha Baron Cohen Exit DJANGO UNCHAINED! Who Will Replace Them?

Beaks here...
Remain calm. All is well.
Yes, it's incredibly disappointing to learn that Kurt Russell has bailed on Quentin Tarantino's DJANGO UNCHAINED (which is still shooting in New Orleans), but the production hasn't missed a beat. Russell's role of Ace Woody, a vicious underling of Leonardo DiCaprio's Calvin Candie, will not be recast; his part has essentially been absorbed by Walton Goggins, who plays the equally nasty Billy Crash. It's up to us fans of JUSTIFIED and THE SHIELD to explain to the rest of the world why an expanded role for Goggins is wholly acceptable.
As for why Russell left the production, I've talked to a few folks in the know, and they all say no explanation was given. It was not a dramatic departure; Tarantino quickly readjusted, and that was that. There was no "walking off the set", and Russell's exit certainly had nothing to do with Sacha Baron Cohen dropping out.
I've asked around, but no one seems clear as to what's going on with Cohen's role. Cohen was to appear as Scotty Harmony, a wealthy social misfit who acquires a female slave for companionship (Jonah Hill was actually Tarantino's first choice for the role), but his promotional duties on behalf of THE DICTATOR knocked him out of the film. It's a small role that helps set up the film's antagonist, plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). It would be disappointing to lose that part of the script, but, if need be, it could be cut.
You'll recall that there was last-second recasting during the shoot of INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, so this is definitely not cause for panic. It just so happens that he's got a huge cast, and a lot of name actors who'd kill to be in his film - and with a fixed December 25th release date, Tarantino simply doesn't have time to wait for actors' schedules to clear up. Aside from these minor snags, it sounds like DJANGO UNCHAINED is coming along beautifully.

. . . like Tom Berenger, but the second I read Goggins got it, I was all for it. Bravo! A billion JGL suggestions for the Harmony role in 5 . . . 4 . . . 3 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . .
-
..but then again so did Pulp Fiction. Tarantino is pretty good at making the absurd enjoyable.
-
You can't just slice the Scotty Harmony role. It's incredibly important to established just how bad of a guy Calvin Candie really is and to what lengths he'll go to get what he wants.
-
...get Travolta!
-
Kinda glad Cohen left. Goes to show how much of a dumb fuck the guy really is. Drop out of a Tarantino picture which sounds like it will be his best in years. It could garner Oscar noms for a lot of it's players. But no, lets go and promote a comedy that looks very shitty and will probably bomb at the box office. Proves what a hack he actually is.

Notice how many intelligent, career-minded talent is exiting this "masterpiece in the making"
by Marc Cerasini
I could certainly understand why Kevin Costner departed. The role was vile and Kev cherishes the Western genre too much to shit all over it the way war films were crapped upon by the crappy Basturds. Now Russell, who isn't exactly tripping over film offers, decided maybe this role wasn't his cup of java, either. And Cohen? Well, who knows, maybe he sensed calamity (Bruno, anyone?) or maybe he just thought the roll was flimsy--but then, when you're making films with a guy who's producing the equivalent of Piss Christ (as compared to Michelangelo) flimsy would be the operative word.
-
I like Cohen, but to leave a film of this magnitude, easily his biggest role to date for "promoting" duties and a rehashed Borat is an extremely unwise choice. He should fire his agent.
-
I can't see him doing anything else since he was effectively 'retired' from acting until Death Proof. Such a shame, I was looking forward to seeing him again.

-
Seriously ppl, actors dropping out of movies happens all the time.
-
Taratino's character names are emblematic of the scripts he writes. Sophomoric.
-
No matter how bad he thought the scripts was, I doubt he wouldn't mysteriously leave that movie. My guess is he was going to be making peanuts on Django, so it was easier to go. At this point who knows. Maybe he did quit, maybe he was pushed out by Tarantino is he didn't like his performance, or maybe it really was just a rewrite of the script that effectively combined the Ace character with someone else. Or maybe Kurt is preparing for some kind of Captain Ron 20th anniversary tour.
-
At least not to my knowledge. I wonder if Kurt actually filmed scenes. Maybe we've got an Eric Stolz Back to the Future moment here.

I haven't read the script for this movie so I only know the premise from the very brief synopses that I've seen on sites like AICN. This sounds like a profoundly ugly movie to me. Inglourious Basterds was supposed to be this cathartic revenge fantasy and it really didn't seem that way to me--it was just ugly and base. There is plenty of drama in the modern world. Does QT really have to stoke racial animus in 2012 by telling such an exaggerated revenge tale set in the mid-19th Century? If I didn't get my jollies from watching Adolf Hitler get machine gunned apart I'm sure as hell not going to jizz over watching whatever is going to happen to this movie's generic white devil Southern slaveholder stereotype. QT is a good writer and it's cheap and weak for him to use these kinds of themes to try to amplify the drama. It's like a cook using ass-on-fire hot sauce on every dish: it'll get a rise out of the diner but it's not something I would expect a master chef to resort to.

The guy probably should've been in like all of Quinty's movies by now. He could've been Quinty's role in RESEVOIR DOGS, he could've been Brad Pitt's character in TRUE ROMANCE, he could've been the Eric Stolz or Tarantino characters in PULP FICTION, he could've been one of the ATF guys in JACKIE BROWN, he could've been Buck in KILL BILL, nobody should've been in DEATH PROOF because it shouldn't have been made, and he could've been Adolf in BASTERDS.

Than I wouldn't worry about anything. I haven't read the screenplay (Why spoil the story?) but I have read a few excerpts here and there. If I recall, Ace Woody is one evil F'er. I won't spoil what I heard he does (Assuming it's true) but I'm pretty sure Goggins will fit the role well. I'd rather have one very evil & more memorable villain (Hans Landa anyone?) Than two evil, but underused villains.
-
There were some things about it I certainly enjoyed (namely Russell) but as a whole the film was bloated, tedious and not nearly as clever as QT thought. I also had some serious problems with Kill Bill 2, as it wasn’t nearly the brilliant conclusion I expected after the excellence of the first. However, Inglorious Basterds was simply awesome and it also renewed my faith that Tarantino is capable of making more than just pulpy grindhouse flicks with smarmy dialogue. I’m looking forward to this and whatever else he is working on.

Of all the people jumping ship, the only one I've been praying would walk off set or die in a fucking fire is Foxx. Shitty actor. Actually, in my opinion, guy isn't even an actor. -
You risk getting tarred and feathered around here by dissing on a sainted one like QT, but Inglourious Basterds was a profoundly ugly - not to mention profoundly uneven -- film, as was Death Proof. QT is motoring now on the fumes of his '90s coolness and a seemingly immeasurable reservoir of goodwill, but he wouldn't want to make too many mistakes.
-
Then switch the role to be Tony Blair
-
This seeming-turd of a movie... even more-so.

-
Tarantino laughs at you nonbelievers. And for the idiot complaining about Mr. Tarantino's last few movies being base or people saying he's sophmoric, where have you been for the last 2 decades?! QT is a genius at focusing on the fucked up things that people get themselves involved in, and always in quite an entertaining way. If you don't like his movies fine, but now we're going to talk about morality? FU, you people don't deserve the amazing directors we have today. Always just whine, whine, whine
-
He took the crazy b-movie fascination and melded it with characters that for the most part (save for the cartoon one note Aldo Raine) exhibited some kind of emotional depth lacking from Kill Bill and Death Proof.
-
You boys wouldn't know creativity if it fell out of your mom's panties and did a dance on your face. His movies never feel like they could be made by anyone else and always seem fresh even as they adapt other genres and morph them through one man's twisted world-view. If you hate on QT, you better hate on David Lynch, Miyazaki, Wes Anderson, Woody Allen, and a half-dozen other directors that play the same cards.

"but to day that QT's work is badly made? That's assinine."...Why you're completely wrong
by quantize
I like his earlier films as much as anyone here..and I loved the opening scene of Inglorious Basterds, but after that initial scene the movie is one long self conscious masturbatory in-joke... the low points : 1. The bowie montage...wow, people think THAT's clever? in Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction the violence is foiled by the contrast in retro chic music, if anything it's intensified.. 2. The cafe scene..easily his worst scripted and directed scene EVER, a repeat of previous half-joking suspense, by the time everyone is shooting i was so thoroughly bored I couldn't give a fuck about who was shot..I wanted them all dead AND SOON. 3.The cinema fire finale, apart from being telegraphed loudly 40mins earlier, the symbolism is clunky and amateur and embarassing for a director whose earlier work is taught and on point. general low points...the idiotic casting...Pitt 'acts' his way through with his jaw..he managed a bigger 'character' range in the Guy Ritchie film..he's .0002 dimensional and unfunny...the entire 'basterds' is a one joke casting which never pays off.. It was a blow job to his fans and people who think they get 'meta' and grindhouse while attempting to do a Dr Strangelove-esque WWII alternate reality...messy, lumpy and desperately fawning to people who think that references alone make 'clever' movies. I would love to see a return to form but if you watch his movies back to back and claim IB is one of his best then you have no fucking taste whatsoever imo...
-
The "facts" I learn from these talkbacks.
-
that awards shows mean absolute dick when he was never nominated especially for season 6 of The Shield. The Shield itself not getting awards for its later seasons prove that as well. The Shield is the best series from beginning to end. I have my personal favorites like The Sarah Connor Chronicles and 24, but The Shield is a perfect masterpiece that I can declare as the best series ever made. And please fuck off with your "The Wire" response.

And it wasn't as accessible as it is today. Even as far as 2001 the internet was slow and took forever to load. I guess you can say that the convenience and instant gratification that people have nowadays make it a lot easier for people to become trolls. Cynicism is alive and well online. I know I've done my share. But when you start to criticize things that have always been cool and popular you make yourself look like a hipster douche. I don't know. it's all apart of modern American culture. Love somebody, then a short time later hate that person. Best example, Zak Synder, modern day fanboys were all over his dick after 300. by CountryBoy
So there's plenty of room to be frustrated or annoyed with his work; it's not mindless "hate."
-
that's because he has only done 7 movies. His movies are well thought out before they are made
-
the people who complain about the so called "references" wouldn't know about the movies that influenced QT, if QT wasn't so open about it and have his own film showings. What QT does is meld his influences with his own ideas, giving us very unique movies.
-
He's always been controversial. And people have always complained about trivial crap on the internet. I myself hated the brief "Quentin Tarantino: Actor" phase he went through after PF. On one hand, it's just human nature to build people up and then tear them down. On the other hand, most directors seem to get worse with age and perhaps skepticism is also natural.

Michael Madsen would make a good Ace Woody. Although, maybe a little predictable. I think Scott Harmony is an important role not just because it establishes Candie's viciousness, but, it also shows Broomhelda's compassion and why she's worth everything Django is going through to be with her again.

tikidonkeypunch, not only was the internet a thing in the mid-90s, but Pulp Fiction was utterly beloved by its denizens.
by PotSmokinAlien
The first quicktime movie clip I ever saw was a promo for Pulp Fiction. It was just the scene of John Travolta and Uma Thurman in the diner booth talking, and then the logo. I agree that the internet encourages an expectation of instant gratification, but I think it's also that the internet, back then, was really only available to those curious or intelligent enough to be able to seek it out and/or access it. Doesn't matter if it's back then or today: with or without the internet's influence, most people are small-minded, sensitive, self-centered assholes who are more inclined to make fun of something they don't understand than ask a question about it. Now that the internet is accessible to such a large percentage of humans, it has become a playground for the basest of human instincts, since unlike reality, there are no physical consequences for being overly competitive with someone who you're way out of your depth with. At least it's encouraging intelligent people to turn their computers off and go engage with reality. ...Wait a sec, what am I doing here?

You don't have to love every single film a filmmaker has made. Hell, a filmmaker can even have a few flat-out objectively poor films in their catalog. Scorcese's got a few weak films. So has Hitchcock, Spielberg, Soderberg, The Coen Brothers, Wilder, and just about every great filmmaker. Personally, while I'm not a huge fan of Jackie Brown or Death Proof (though I enjoy parts of both), I don't think QT has a single film in his body of work that can be considered objectively bad. And his last film was actually among his best. So I find it utterly absurd to hear people try to write him off as some hack who hasn't made a great film in a long time. Bullshit. And it's also bullshit to demand filmmakers blow your mind every single time. Woody Allen has made more great films than most filmmakers have made films period. Yet he has a number of lesser films too. So what? That doesn't diminish his accomplishments. I'm really sick of this short-attention-span culture that declares a TV show "jumped the shark" after just one weak episode or considers a filmmaker only as good as his or her last film. If you think it's so easy to hit it out of the park every single time, you try doing it. It's just not a fair or reasonable expectation to demand creators do so 100% of the time. One film doesn't make or a break a filmmaker (unless you're Joel Shumacker); it's the totality of one's body of work that should matter.
-
His role was gonna be awesome

Loved The Shield (second greatest urban crime drama after The Wire) and love Justified. I know Goggins is going to be great b/c he plays a great racist. So good that I wished his death on both of those shows, or at least on The Shield. Almost plays it too well...hmmmm.

Tarentino has ripped off old westerns movie themes and splattered them onto ripped off scenes and editing styles (Sergio Leone, anyone), calling it a -hommage- sorry but I call it a hack
by Franck
This time around he has a western cowboy movie, he can hack around all day and it will (almost) go unnoticed. Not hating, just saying it as I see it, and although I give the guy credit for the quality of his rip-off, it's still a rip-off to me, -hommage- can only take you so far...

John Jarratt is still in Django Unchained, that's all that matters
by Hardboiled Wonderland
If you haven't seen the Australian film Wolf Creek, do yourself a favour. Now. I have no idea what Jarratt's role is in Django, unfortunately. But he's such a brilliant actor, I'm sure it'll be good.

Maybe he just didn't want to play a character named Ace Woody?

Ace Woody Sounds like it could be one of the porn star names in Boogie Nights.

Same thing happened on the set of Fitzcarraldo, and it worked
by Ricardo
The Mick Jagger character duties was absorbed by Kinski's character (and the cook character), nad it worked. Of course, it would be neat to see Jagger becoming one with the indians, as his character was supposed to do.

thedoctor28, we're all avoiding Prometheus news and spoilers

Those who know more than we mere movie plebs have said as much that we're better off seeing the movie not knowing a whole lot, than getting all the goss and info now and spoiling the experience. The four-toed Egyptian statue in Lost? They're the Engineers on planet Zeus.

I'd love to see Tarintino take on the pulp comics with an E.C movie. Maybe an anthology with Rodriguez and other directors

I could read between the lines just a little. The response felt...terse. I suspect that it wasn't just a matter of scheduling. Something went a little...wrong. Perhaps rehearsals, perhaps ego clashes...but I sensed stuff not being said. There is still a possibility that I might visit the set, and if so I'll hope to come back with more info. Meanwhile, it's just fun to have even the tiniest "inside line" on the production. I can say that my contact commented on Tarantino's focus of intent. There was something "politically incorrect" in connection with the story, and QT took the position that historical accuracy and commitment to the best story trump PC every time. Again, it isn't like I have a wide-open pipeline, and I want to be respectful of my source, but the word at this point is that the movie is going GREAT.
-
Like many of you, I am disappointed that the decision was made. But let's face it, this type of film is just not a great fit for Keri Russell. Wait...what? Kurt Russell? Nevermind....

"If it's not Tango it's Cash.......if not Cash than Tango. Tango, cash....Tango Tango Tango, Cash Cash Cash. Tango, Cash. Tango, Cash. Tango, Cash. Tango, Cash. Tango, Cash........" "Yeah, I think we're getting the point Mr. Palance...

Since The Dictator opens next week, couldn't he just have taken a few days off? Or maybe it is that, coupled with Les Miserables which is also filming right now, that's got him too busy and too difficult to schedule him.
-
now I'll be obsessed with trying to figure out what part of the movie fits thats criteria when I watch it. It implies that were some historical truths that ruffled a few feathers and I'm wondering what they could be.

this site is so in the tank for QT. Russell walked off over 'creative differences'
by Arcadian Del Sol
meaning, a guy with a WHOLE LIFETIME of experience in making good movies couldn't see eye to eye with a guy who has made FOUR good movies, and a dozen LOUSY movies. I side with the guy with the WHOLE LIFETIME of experience- Kurt Russell. He's proven. QT is like closing your eyes and throwing darts at a board. 100 darts later, 2 or 3 are going to be hits.

Don't want you to go crazy. It has to do with Christopher Weitz's character mentoring Django in the gunfighting trade. While blacks were certainly not widely encouraged to learn the use of deadly force (to put it mildly), the truth is that whites as individuals offered many, many acts of kindness and support for blacks at that time. So the question of what might be true broadly (crushing bigotry and repression) or be Politically Correct (some might find the revenge motif more satisfying if Django were self-taught), I believe Tarantino is being both accurate, compassionate and true to his story sense...as opposed to (possibly) being PC by omitting a very, very positive white figure from this scenario.
-
When QT stared at Juliette Lewis' feet and she said: "Richie, will you do me a favor and eat my pussy for me?" He is at his best when writing sick depraved shit.

lose him eh? can't fucking stand that tit.

How I'll know Tarantino is back...and not the hipster-baiting hack shapeshifter who stole his identity...
by BurnHollywood
When he announces that his next movie takes place principally in a Midwest gas station, the adjoining gift shop, and maybe (just maybe) the farm a little ways down the road. His first three astonishingly brilliant films were all epics writ small...major, life-changing events in the existence of small, seemingly irrelevant and disposable people...hoods, flatfoots and killers. That chilling scene in RESERVOIR DOGS where Mr. Blonde waltzes out of the warehouse to fetch his gasoline is a perfect example: outside, it's life as usual in LA. Jews don't magically machine-gun Hitler and change history here. Like Stephen King, the higher he aims, the better he ain't.
-
Sacha didn't fit the role the way I read it. Scotty should be played by an actor that's more overweight and repulsive. Kevin Costner was perfect, but Kurt Russell was too likable to play Ace Woody. Not sure what to think about ditching the character altogether. @samuel fulmer - I hope your right. Fassbender would be amazing as Ace Woody!!!
-
God hates the Lords of Salem. No one can ever save them!!!!
-
It's about time that Tarantino gets the recognition he deserves. Not one personal Oscar, shame on you Academy! They should all be forced to watch Kill Bill I & II. By the way, I think he should reboot Battle Royale, which is an obvious influence for him!
-
First Costner, now Russell. No Wyatt Earp left in this movie. Pity!
-
M.C. gainey and walton goggins will great in the film
-
You are absolutely right. QT may think too high of himself and rub off the wrong way some veterans. I still give the guy credit for sampling scenes, cults soundtracks of movies ranging from 70's black cinema to Japanese drama with a Sergio Leone filming/editing style and Ennio Morriconne soundtracks left and right, and make it a decent flick, but a well done hack remains a hack in my book. It's like a good DJ mash-up: you respect the producer for his technique, the mix creates a good song, but the mashed-up songs were hits in the first place, it's obvious the mash-up will do well. So to me QT still has to prove that he can compose his own rather than take from the others and call it -hommage-...that can only take you so far, and this is the primary reason why he never got an Oscar.

Did I miss a casting? He is there on the set.
