Ain't It Cool Exclusive! See Mondo's DARK SHADOWS Poster!
Nordling here.
This Friday, Tim Burton's DARK SHADOWS opens, with Burton and Johnny Depp collaborating again on another trip down the strange and fantastic. This time, Depp plays Barnabas Collins (the role the late Jonathan Frid owned on the television show), the vampire patriarch of the Collins family, a collection of oddities, schemers, and plotters that the world is not prepared for.
My review goes up Friday, but until then enjoy this new poster from MondoTees, courtesy of artist Ghostco (aka Matthew Woodson). The poster looks foreboding and brooding, an appropriate choice for the immortal Barnabas. You can check @MondoNews for sales announcements in the next few days! There will be a total of 270 posters available. Enjoy!

love mondo!
-
I'd like to humbly thank my employer for work from home days for my firstie above.
-
Mondo is back in shape. What a cool poster.
-
Also, it looks like he's standing on the chin of a massive Peter Cushing.

Release is too soon after Avengers. This movie may not be big.
by Tikidonkeypunch
I can see myself sneaking in when I go see The Dark Knight Rises or something else.
-
Overall the poster is good and I'm all for artistic license and stylization, but maybe Barnabas' shadow should be, oh, I don't know, dark?

WOW!! MORE MONDO STUFF!!! NO CARE EVER!!!
by where_are_quints_hobbit_set_reports
HOW ABOUT SOME HOBBIT SET REPORTS
-
Someone explain?
-
I expect it to drop.
-
...the image is cut exactly in half by the horizon line and the coattails create a blatant tangent with said horizon line. Easy fixes that could have improved this image quite a bit.
-
That even the diehard geek community either knows nothing about DS, or cares little. The general masses know even less. Rabid DS fans (like myself) are few in number and consist mainly of aging housewives and most are probably as disgusted as I am. Johnny Depp's supposed love and respect for the source material is just about as genuine as Frank Miller's for The Spirit and I predict that this film will be about on par with that.
-
I can't fucking stand Mondo.

'Cuz the stumping by an Austin-based movie gossip website is as close as you'll ever come to owning a Mondo original
by gruntybear
That's what these ads always say to me. Fuck Mondo. Until it starts doing unlimited runs on its "art," there's no point in ever looking twice at their "neener-neener-you'll-never-have-a-chance-to-own-this" posters.
-
I'm sorry, but what the fuck is Dark Shadows? I have been on the Internet since 1995 and nobody anywhere (including this site) has *ever* mentioned Dark Shadows until this film came up, and then that guy died the other day. Is this some weird viral marketing thing where they invented a supposedly-beloved show from the 70s? Some show that young Harry watched with his dad, made him the man he is today, blah blah blah? I have never heard of Dark Shadows, and neither have you.
-
you are a grumpy bear.
-
Total riff on Friedrich's Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog from 1818. Pretty cool stuff. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanderer_Above_the_Sea_of_Fog Could someone explain the Mondo hate? It seems like, "If I can't have it then I am going to hate it." Is that it?
-
You could just go to a little website called google and just fucking search "Dark Shadows" instead of asking moronic questions on here about it really existing as if this is the only goddamn website you have ever had access to for 17 years.

"Getting terrible reviews. At 50% on RT." How's 50 Terrible????
by Proman1984
Give me a break.
-
He died before the horrid reveal of this abomination.
-
The show was enormously popular during its original run. They played Dark Shadows on PBS in the 80s, then syndicated (think I watched it on WGN), and it was played every weekday on Sci-fi (as it was then known) in the 90s. They released the entire collection on dcs in the 00s. Not long ago, my wife and I watched a few episodes on Netflix. Not only is the show well known, it's pretty fucking ubiquitous.
-
The movie is classic Tim Burton.
-
What school did you attend where 50% is a passing grade?
-
Film still looks like utter shit. I can't describe how far my heart sunk upon viewing the trailer. I'll wait for Frankenweenie, which looks like my kind of classic Burton. The man's been hit or miss since his Apes debacle.
-
It's fan made. Made it a while back: http://caltsoudas.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/collins-family-portrait.html and in black and white: http://caltsoudas.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/collins-family-portrait-mono.html I absolutely love this one though.
-
I'll tell you how 50 is terrible. It's the equivalent of an F on a test. But, I suppose that's why you didn't know that. I'm a die-hard Burton fan and think this movie looks awful. Whoever wrote those "jokes" I've seen in the trailer and clips should be put out to pasture.
-
Thanks friend, but I don't literally think it doesn't exist. I was exaggerating for effect. It exists, alright, but nobody gives a flying fig about it and nobody has for 30 years - as evidenced by the fact that nearly two decades of genre-based web surfing by yours truly has never once brought up so much as a mention of this program. The few people who are going to enjoy this film will not be the fans of the original material.
-
...if Mondo comes out with a PARIS, TEXAS poster, sign me up. Especially if its of Natassja Kinski in that fuzzy pink backless sweater.
-
Otherwise, I really like this one.

Also, I saw something said about this movie that made me pause...
by Jaka
...think Beetlejuice, not Alice In Wonderland or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I was like, huh, OK. I'd like it to remind me even a little of the tone of Beetlejuice, but I'm not getting that from the previews.
-
The short-lived prime time remake really shows what a huge and devoted fanbase this property has. It's definitely not something that only 50-something divorcees with perms remember. Nope. Definitely beloved the world over, this Dark Shadows.
-
for a movie I won't be seeing. Too bad, too. The comedic tone of the trailer turned me off.

Burton needs to stop making movies that are 'Burton movies'
by Raptor Jesus
Frankenweenie and this pretty much prove that. He hasn't made a good movie since 'Ed Wood'.
-
Why not actually try to match the tone of the movie you're doing a poster for?
-
I would still take any Burton production over anything related to anybody involved with "Lost."
-
very ugly, sorry.
-
I like your poster way better than the Mondo one. Theirs looks like a graphic novel cover; yours looks like art.
-
0-30 is though, Burton & Depp have to many fan boys for it to drop that low though.
-
Tell collector idiots there are only 200 or so of something, and they'll rush to buy it. 200 or so limited editions of crap doesn't mean 200 or so limited editions of crap are going to be good or worth anything.
-
a little obvious lately
-
Even the positive reviews are pretty hard on it.
-
Uh oh, hit a nerve. You've been nursing your love of Dark Shadows for 40 years and now that it's finally getting its chance to shine, you can't *stand* that nobody cares. It's okay, though; I went through much the same thing when the Fiennes/Thurman Avengers came out. These feelings will pass and, god willing, you'll move on. Listen, I ain't saying Dark Shadows was unknown back in its day. I'm simply saying that today, nobody gives a shit.
-
I love most of what Mondo is producing, but I find that there is a need for some new directions, new illustrators, something. The Conan poster was weaker than usual. The Burning, Iron Giant, Swamp Thing, Steamboat Willie, My Neighbor Totoro were awesome, they made us look at the film in a different light, they took the stories that we know and love and represented them (on the one sheet) in a way we hadn't seen before. There is no taking away the talent, I couldn't begin to do what they do. I would hate for them to stretch things too thin. Quality over quantity.
-
For taking the show out of rotation about a week before the climax of it's what? 1100 something episodes. Fucking douche bags. P.S., @ buckethead50: No one really does give a shit, except for maybe you and me.
-
Saw an advance screening the other day, and the prologue is the only good part of this movie. Why make a movie based on Dark Shadows if you're just going to turn it into some half-assed Addams Family rip-off? And if you're not going to try to make it like the show, why keep around the character of Dr. Hoffman and give her nothing of consequence to do? I'm so glad I didn't pay for this crap.

why does Tim Burton need to stop making "Burton" movies?
by TheDark0Knight
He makes them for "Burton" fans. Just like Wes Anderson makes his movies for Wes Anderson fans. Or Tarantino makes movies for Tarantino fans. Not every filmmaker is like Ridley Scott or Spielberg, or even Martin Scorsese. Some film makers (like painters) make films in the same style every time out. & I'm ok with that. I don't dig every Tim Burton flick, but he's not a bad filmmaker, and really the only true "bad" film he has made is his Planet of the Apes.
-
thats not a good drawing.
-
....they aren't charging ridiculous amounts of money for them. In fact, they charge pretty reasonable amounts for the quality of the paper/print. If somebody wants a nice $50 print of something they like on their wall, what's the big deal? It cost that much to get a good quality print of anything.
-
When Burton breaks out of his own little envelope great stuff happens; BATMAN, SLEEPY HOLLOW, ED WOOD, even BIG FISH. Other than that he just keeps buying up other people's properties and dressing Johnny Depp up like a clown.
-
It was a cult soap opera with a cult following. That you've never heard of it just proves that you're not all that much of a pop culture nerd. Any fan of vampire fiction knows who he is. He is amongst the great vampire of popular fiction. Of which you clearly know nothing about. That being said, this movie will tank and make some money selling goofy merchandise at Hot Topic and Spencers.
-
Links to your superior Dark Shadows artwork would be greatly appreciated.
-
I shut up the trolls. Bazinga!
-
Actually, I posted my own Dark Shadows art further up, however I'm one of those who really do love this illustration a lot. In fact people should go to his site, he does really beautiful work.
-
In my mind, your poster is much more suited for the film that it's advertising/an ode to than Mondo's. Keep up the good work!
-
I guess my main beef is: why the limited number of everything? I suppose I just don't understand the Mondo process. The artists who produce the posters only make a limited number of (whatever), and when they're sold, they're sold. I've actually seen some that looked cool that I'd like to have...but the high price and limited availability prevent me from purchasing. Why not make more available, instead of the artificial constraint amount? If you or someone can enlighten me on the Mondo concept, then I'll understand. The whole "Tweet and 1 minute later they're gone" concept bewilders me. I'm not watching my tweets all day, and not that hot to do nothing but wait to buy.
