Burton and Disney in talks for a sequel to THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Published at:  Apr 01, 2000 5:54:43 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here. Surprising word reached me early last week that I've been following up on, about how Tim Burton and Disney have begun to talk about a possible sequel to THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

Recently while I was at CREATURE FEATURE, a cool model and toy shop in Los Angeles, the owner told me that the license that the Japanese toy company that's been producing all those badass NBC toys had been pulled. That Disney was cooking something up regarding that.

Well, lo and behold I begin getting a few informers about these Burton/Disney meetings and NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS and I begin getting all excited.

While I don't know yet, what the plot will be, I do hope that Burton is bringing in Henry Selick and Danny Elfman to jam on whatever is going on. To me, this is a very very exciting project. My favorite film in the decade of the 90's was THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS... and I'm dying for the upcoming special DVD for the film.

While Disney is at it, hiring Elfman and producing LITTLE DEMONS would also earn high cool marks in my book as well. If you hear anything about a NIGHTMARE sequel... report... QUICKLY back to me. I'm dying to hear it.

Cool, This is my first post! I am a huge fan of this great flick so I really hope that this turns out to be true! Harry mentioned something about a Special EditionDVD of NBC, does any one have any idea when its coming out? I assume it will be just a straight port of the Deluxe boxed Laserdisc set that sells for $80 bucks on eBay. I bought the bare bones DVD version, so I am really looking foreward to picking up a deluxe edition. Yes I know I'm rambling. Well. I guess I should stop now then. See ya.

A Nightmare before Christmas 2, NOOOOOO!

    by roborob

A Brilliant Classic Film like The nightmare Before Christmas is almost impossible to recreate. Sequals genrally suck. BUT and I just thought of this, What about Toy Story 2? Do I think a sequal to A nightmare Before Christmas is wrong, If it is made it will probably suck! But it may Rock, Time will tell I suppose, but I do Hope that A nightmare Before Christmas 2 is a Brilliant film even better than the original, is that is possible.

    by baff

have i missed something? i just posted on how overated i think ed wood is and now waiting for someone to tell me why ANYONE could love it, and know i want to know why everyone thinks that this is such a great movie? i mean, i think that the animation is super magnificent and beautiful but didnt anyone think that the story was the most uneven thing in the world? i thought that the story was pathetic! i didnt give a shit about any of the characters, i thought the songs were forced, and i thought that it was very disney formulaic but the one good element of the formula was missing, the VILLAIN. i think a villain would have given the story a lot more structure. does anyone else notice these flaws in the movie as well? baff

i dunno, Nightmare before Christmas was a good film but i was a little dissapointed with it,
I think i just didn't find the story very involving. But i'll see a sequel just for more of Burton's great gothic direction which made the first one real preeeeeety. And maybe it'll improve on the first film...

Um, can you imagine a sequel to this movie? I really don't think it needs to happen and can't reeeeeeally believe it is, but hey, if they want to ruin a classic, they can. If Harry wants to perpetuate an April Fool's Day joke that will really get the fanboys shaking their fists in the sky, this would be the ticket.

    by narf

Once again, I'll point out two words that people have to understand: "The End". "Nightmare" was wonderful and the story was completed. That's it. It's over. As for a Special Edition DVD, I love DVD but no matter what they do with it, it'll never outclass the deluxe laserdisc set. Sure, they'll slap all the extras on it no problem, but the packaging alone makes me wish that DVD makers would put a little love into the making of DVDs. The beautiful slipcase, hardcover book and insert will all be gone and replaced with interactive menus. Hey, that's fine and it'll be nice and affordable, but to all you yahoos who never owned a laserdisc player, you'll never understand the care that went into the presentation of these special editions. The "Platoon" set alone is worth the price of admission. But I rant, and I'm sure I'll be cut down by some buckethead about this is a couple of posts. Gabba Gabba Hey.

"Nightmare" an off beat insight into life, Huzzah!

    by nixons nighthawk

Jack Skellington is my model on the concept of try. Without malice he reached for the new in his life embraced change and new ideas and took the risk of failure. When he's laying in the arms of an angel after his entire plan has come to ruin, he replaces his jaw and sings "what have I done, done what have I done" he epitomizes the pain of loss and failure. His moans of confusion slowly rises from the pit of loss to, "what the heck I went and did my best." He realizes that failure is only truly failure when you aimed at your goal with malice in your heart. Jack is not the King of the Pumpkin Patch he's the king of good intentions and that kind of royalty deserves the true crown. Huzzah for Burton for getting Danny Elfman back in the "musical" driver seat. That's what "Nightmare" is, a musical worthy of Broadway. Hmm, Lion King watch your sweet little "circle of life" fanny. Please Monsignior Harry feel free to tell us if "Somethings up with Jack", he's one to watch! Particularly if you're laid up in a Lebanese hospital nursing burn wounds from an out of control oil fire. I think Dick Nixon looked a bit like "Sandy Claws". I'm the hawk and Sally can give me a bottle full of butterflys anytime. P.S. Harry if you need someone to cover Broadway I'm right here in the heart of the "Big Harry Apple" ready to serve.

    Nixon, you nailed it!

    by scott1458

This is probally an April Fool's Joke, but Nixon, you totally hit the damn nail on the head as to why TNBC IS my favorite Burton film ever. The theme( as you described) of self-redemption and the way in which Jack tries/fails and picks himself up is just fantastic. He realizes he gave it is best, yes he didn't succeed but he IS good at another thing, and plans to do it even better.

The Elfman score (what's this, Jack's lament) really fine tunes everything, and punches you in the balls.

A sequel? Only if Elman repeates his score (and sings) and most of the orginal team is brought back on board. I beleive Burton did have other ideas for a seqeul in mind years ago, but I'm not sure. And when would he do it? Well I believe the first one took almost 2 years..so they better get started.

Just hope we see the pin-cusion princess....

    by all thumbs

I hate making lists, but I would say it falls closely behind "Beauty and the Beast," both "Toy Story" movies, and "Sleeping Beauty." (Yes, they're all Disney, I know, but they're more of the "classic Disney" and Pixar.) Anyways, I'm not sure about a sequel, but I'm going to be optimistic and think of it as a chance to a great one right up there with "Godfather II" and "Toy Story II." Anyone who fell asleep in this movie needs to take some Vivarin or their narcoplexy medication and watch it again. Nixon, you hit the nail on the head on why this movie is so great. Besides, it's got some great songs that beat out Disney's latest any day. I love Danny Elfman!

Luckily I was there to see EL DORADO and the theater was practically empty. TNCB is overrated..I generally like Danny Elfman but most of the songs are pretty dull...Not saying I didn't like it though. ED WOOD is Burton's best movie.

NO. Please say this was your April Fools Joke Harry! Sequels, in general, suck large amounts of diseased donkey dick. Okay, there's the occasional Scream 2 or Evil Dead 2, but generally making a sequel just ruins the original film. Look at Rocky! Please, no Nightmare Before Christmas 2 and while we're at it, no Matrix sequels, no Blair Witch sequels or prequels or whatever, and will someone please distroy all copies of the Phantom Menace so we can all go back to watching a wonderful Star Wars trilogy and not a Star Wars three great and one crap film set!!!! The only films that should have sequels are films like The Mummy and Lost In Space, which were crap enough to begin with so a sequel can't make much difference anyway.

I just don't understand why anyone other than the filmmakers and the studios care. I saw JAMES & THE GIANT PEACH. Unless it's some straight to video smell-fest, I don't see this happening. I really enjoyed TNBC but it BOMBED when it was released. The licsensed toys became prized collectors items because the public wasn't buying them and they were discounted out of Toys R Us, never to be seen again. (until the Japanese remakes) I just don't see Disney having the balls to make another movie that failed theatrically but was an artistic success. Maybe 50 years later, like Fantasia. --Syd.

    by darth taun taun

Elfman is indeed a fantastic composer, though his scores have been weak lately. (Sleepy Hollow could have been way better, score-wise.) I was just disappointed when Patrick Stewart's great voiceovers in the beginning and end were cut. They sound great on the soundtrack, anyway. (Oh, and the NBC sequel involves Jack "boning" the kids from the American Pie sequel. I guess.)

Nightmare certainly didn't bomb when it was released. It was the number 1 movie for three weeks running. It's domestic box office gross was over double what it cost to make. And as far as the merchandise... Half price at Toys R Us??!! HAH! It nearly all sold out within a month. Did it even ever make it to Toys R Us? As far as Tim Burton meeting with Disney re:NBC... probably trying to set up interviews to be attached to the DVD. And word is that Disney is starting to reissue Nightmare merchandise, so they probably don't want any competition from the Japanese.

    by syd mead

TNBC did not live up to Disney's box office
expectations...so it was NOT considered a "winner." Mission to Mars was number one on it's opener...it didn't stay there for long either. There was NEVER any talk of a direct to video sequel. The toys were made; LIKE ALL TOYS, many months before the film's release. The toys WERE discounted and sold cheap because of less
than steller box office from TNBC. I also like to add, NO SECOND SERIES TOYS were EVER made...like you see in Star Wars, Aliens, Star Trek toys. In other words, THE WHOLE SERIES WAS DUMPED. But if you don't believe me check Action Figure Magazine or the Tom Art Catalog. The facts are there. I LOVE the movie, I own it, I was lucky enough to pick a few up before they disappeared. Because after the first series was discounted, the toys were never made by an American toy company again. Finally, I think Disney will NEVER make another The Nightmare Before Christmas...sadly, this story is B.S., Disney has no intention
    to make another one.--Syd.

    by bryan

I'm not sure about your area, Syd, but here the Nightmare toys disappeared in about a week. Believe me, I was looking for them. The only figures I ever saw at Toys R Us were a Behemoth and a werewolf, and they never seemed to get in more. If the toys had really been a failure, they'd linger around for the better part of a year like those for Independence Day, The Mummy, etc. Behemoth and, say, Dr. Finkelstein would have been an eyesore cluttering the Toys R Us aisles next to the Small Soldiers and the Extreme Spiderman skeet shooting skydivers. That never happened with the Nightmare toys, which were already going for huge prices in the secondary market before the movie was even out of theaters. Their scarcity was a miscalculation on Disney's part and not due to a lack of interest in consumers. Otherwise, why would Nightmare merchandise (both old and new) still be such a huge phenomenon among collectors to this day, five years later?

    by nixons nighthawk

But really 41672 aren't we all, somewhere in our soul the "oogie boogie" man. That's where these cartoony's resonate with adults, they are about archetypes. Each character in the film, in a very simplified way, represent the phases of any healthy adult. A sequel of course has got to break new ground. If this one does we'll have another delightful peek into this mythos Burton inspired. Maybe the Pumpkin King will be our pair of eyes in this world. Or maybe we'll go with someone new. Maybe a whole different Holiday could be explored. What's critical is that someone has there heart invested in whatever story is told. When the author of anything puts personal struggles on the screen then the human animal will relate. It doesn't matter what style the story is told in be it; cartoons, live action, book or shadow puppet. If someone with talent has struggled with themselves and life and let it all bleed over into a story, people will watch. To all those naysayers who equate sucess to "dollars earned." tell that to the North Vietnamese. I've seen them in action my friend. How did they (I'm not ashamed to say it)put a shiner on old Uncle Sam. There heart was there! Win, Lose or draw if you are there with heart exposed, trading slings and arrows of whatever sort, then your fight is valid and so is your sequel. Syd Mead if you ever want to take your beef somewhere lonely we'll test heart against somebody who counts beans. Say what? Nuff Said! I'm the hawk my heart is on fire.

    Toy Nightmare...

    by syd mead

    Applause Toys stop production as
soon as the box office returns were in. No doubt they under predicted the COLLECTOR demand. The same exact thing happened to
Mars Attack Movie Toys (not the ugly comic adaptation ones). The COLLECTOR demand soaked up what the general market wasn't that interested in. Too bad, because they were cool toys. Demand and limitation is what drives collectors. Another example, the original
Alien (worth $650 mint in box) action figure was deemed a "failure" by Hasbro because mommy and daddy didn't like it. I bought one (I was 13 at the time) as easy
as that in 1980. Then they were pulled from the shevles because of consumer conplaints that they were TOO SCARY. But the reason a toy or toy line becomes a collector item like TNBC is HOW COOL IT IS and HOW LIMITED IT IS. Nightmare toys
had a VERY small run because the toy companies who had the license
figured it was a failure based on box office performance. It wasn't "mainstream" enough. For a month, there was
Nightmare toys on the pegs, BUT THEY WERE DISCOUNTED OUT !!! Fuck,
were you people there? I doubt you were old enough to ride your bike to the store. Look it up in any collector mag, I'm a collector and a designer, BTW. This Disney rumor is just that kiddies...I wish it weren't true but it isn't.--Syd.

    by petunia

Yes, I was there! In fact I spent 25 months working on NBC, and believe me you, I don't have to read the toy trade magazines to know what happened to NBC toys. I was paying full attention to the shelves, since NBC had just been my life for the last two years. I was at Disneyworld 3 weeks after the release of the movie. They had a huge Nightmare puppet and set display. The store selling merchandise was nearly picked over by the time I got there and then sold out during the one week I was there. But those are only the observation I made with my eyes at the time the toys were currently selling. I'll admit I never read any of the trade news about it. By the way, what do those trades say about the re-release of Nightmare merchandise? Wanna make a bet about whether you'll be seeing it on store shelves again?

    by pumkinking

I know that Elfman and Burton had a falling out in the past and have since mended ties, but the last I heard, Burton pissed off Selick to the point that they almost (or have they...) changed the name of the animation company "Skelington"(named for the lead character in their first production)... I know that when 'James and the Giant Peach' was in production, Burton tried to pull some ego shit to get animators to leave 'Skelington' for his 'Mars Attacks' movie. In the wake of that, I know there was some bad blood... does anyone know if Burton and Selick are cool with eachother again?

    by syd mead

Most of my friends were buying the Nightmare toys up BUT
the public didn't get much to grab thanks in part to the buyers (retailers like Target, Wal-Mart and Toys R Us) who looked at the toys and went "HUH?" From what I know, Nightmare toys were discounted in the suburban areas where collecting was not a big thing yet. This was not 1995 yet, when collecting toys really took off in a mainstream kind of way. I have a friend who used to work at Applause plus I've been in the toy business for many years. I was asking co-workers today what they heard or remember
and I got the exact story back. The toys were discounted at the major retailers and no second series was ever
brought to retail. A fine example is Toy Story, when it was first in production...Mattel didn't want to L.C. it??? A little company in Canada, ThinkWay Toys was the major LC'er for Toy Story for the first movie. What a major mistake!! When business and art mix the results can be pure buffoonery. That's NOT to say that Nightmare wasn't THE best animated movie that year. That it delighted millions and was Tim Burton's best produced film in my opinion. Because it WAS all that and a bag of chips. The Nightmare toys may make a come back in a small way but I don't see Disney getting excited about a Nightmare II. That's somebody's wishful thinking. --Syd.

Given my love for both Burton's films and "Nightmare Before Christmas" in general, I HOPE this works out.

HOWEVER, given the spate of crappy "direct-to-video" sequels that Disney's been cranking out recently (I saw a promo for "Little Mermaid TWO" at a local Suncoast Video!!), here's hoping that Burton manages to keep Herr Eisner's staff from fiddling with the script and turning it into an overglorified plug for the newest line of toys and t-shirts.

re-release good, sequel not so good

    by deebla

Regarding the other subject of a re-release of NMBC....yes indeed - do it, go for it, it will more than likely do WAY better financially the second time around with it's fan-base alone. As for a sequel, I have thought about this one for quite a while... Assuming that the production team of the original were all called back to do it, and all the original characters and things were re-made, there would have to be a genius of a script writer to make it work. Otherwise, it would be a waste of effort. I really dont think a sequel will ever happen... As for the merchandise, for the re-release, I think there should be some NEW items made - the easiest and most obvious to collectors would be 11 new Tiny Kingdom figurines. (Clown, werewolf, Harlequin Demon, Vampire, etc, etc.) Did someone mention something about Jun Plannings license being pulled?? That would suck - they make the best NMBC stuff - I have quite a big stack of it. Anyway...that's what I thinkie.
