What Does Ain’t It Cool’s TV Critic Think Of THE AVENGERS?? Herc Also Chats Up PARKS AND RECREATION Mastermind (And Mose Schrute Alter Ego) Michael Schur!! Listen And Call In LIVE
At 8 p.m. PT Saturday!!
Every Saturday night for the few months I’ve been quietly guesting on something called “Ask Mr. KERN,” a radio show out of California that most of the time quickly wends its way to Geek Matters.
One of the key topics tonight is Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers.” I’m told we’re going FULL SPOILER MODE on this one.
We're also chatting on-air tonight with “Parks And Recreation” creator/showrunner Michael Schur, the former SNL writer who plays Dwight Schrute’s cousin Mose on “The Office.”
The radio show airs Saturday 8:05 p.m. to 10 p.m. Pacific Time.
No matter where you are you can listen to the show LIVE by hitting the “Listen Live” button at kernradio.com.
Best of all, you, constant reader, can join this very nerdy conversation.
The toll-free call-in line is:
1-800-640-5376
Call in drunk, as I always do, but watch your language. This is not a podcast. This monster goes out over the air on all 50,000 watts of Central California’s KERN-AM.
Be there. Mahalo.

Herc talking about Whedon is like beaks talking about rape
by Miyamoto_Musashi
The radio studio will be full of more man juice than a Thai brothel
-
It is awesome.
-
Just had a private screening of this film with some of my Mormon budz. We all agreed it was the best, most moving political film we ever saw. Lemme tellya, we were all jumping up and down when that iron fella blew up those hobo bums falling through a hole in the sky. Thats the only way to deal with those lefty occupiers who want to ruin our cities. Then, after his work is done, going back to his penthouse to "chill". Lemme tellya, I can relate to that... ha, ha. Still can't figure out what happened to that bumblebee fella...didn't see him at all. Maybe next November we can start making this real Call me Mittster
-
You locked that one down.
-
Great show, Herc. I've been diggin' it.

Herc - Does kernradio.com have plans to offer podcasts of Ask Mr. KERN shows?
by L.H.Puttgrass
I had to miss the end of the Cabin in the Woods show because I had not seen the movie yet at the time. I have seen it since. And it was awesome!
-
They have an *audio vault*, but so far it's been far too much like Capone's vault. Minus the puzzled and embarrassed Geraldo.
-
The echoes are amazing...
-
... is coming. At least that's the word I got. Hopefully... soon...
-
You can call into the show and talk about whatever you like. The moto of the show is... "You keep it clean, we'll keep you on". But it ain't a political show. Mainly it deals with all things pop culture.
-
yes, and very soon.
-
Pure FUN! Loved it. A well fitting link to previous films in the same chain.
-
is dark-haired and handsome, but likely not as rich as Romney and Bobby Newport.
-
It is a pretty good show.

If you do this every Saturday night, why is it you only remind us when SNL is new?
by Shermdawg
-
I'm trying to destroy SNL. We do talk to "Parks and Recreation" mastermind Mike Schur a bit about his work on SNL tonight, if that's any consolation.
-
I was five minutes early and heard some right-wing loon yammering about the gold standard and the free market and a bunch of other hackneyed b.s. Sorry about your tin-foil hat wearing lead in.
-
Thanks Herc
-
I'm in.
-
because I have to be in and out for a while. Great show guys.
-
But mostly I'm in shock still, really.
-
I will if I get the chance.

I'm sitting here, in front of a soon to be 10 year old Dell desktop that's rocking 1GB of RAM.
by L.H.Puttgrass
I've got Norton running a full scan, Google Chrome with AICN, and KERN on the Triton Digital Live Player. All because my Asus G74SX-A2 Laptop started showing me the Blue Screen of DEATH about a week ago. I've been too busy with work to fix it. To answer your question, I don't know. Just listening and doing some chores.
-
Captain America is still my favorite of the bunch, still. But by a HAIR.
-
I hate when that happens. BSOD is a nightmare, mostly because it's so hard to tell sometimes if it's hardware or software. Memory errors can be memory.... or it could be a lie and it's the power supply. (happened to me about 10 times in 5 years)
-
Tell me about your garage!! lol Love the ads.
-
That's a first. Congrats. I've heard everything from gotlik to goatlicker.
-
But my memory is vague.

...after the epic battle between Thor and Iron Man, in fact, all the beatdown that Iron Man takes through the movie...Thor just casually pops off the face plate after Stark falls back to earth?? doesn't that seem odd to anyone else?
-
Y'know the ones where they'll cut to the Hello Deli and Tom Hanks or someone is sitting down eating.
-
Now you gotta show up.
-
You might not be glad that you did. lol
-
I guess...
-
Yeah, I'm almost sure that's what they shot. It makes sense.
-
Besides the score, like I said on the air, I only had small technical issues. I'm super happy that Joss was able to pull this off. Thanks for listening, everyone!
-
Oh yeah.
-
but at least we don't have filthy commercials. ;)
-
I assumed.
-
the Mark VII introduction! thought the briefcase armour from Iron Man 2 was impressive (which it was) but the Mark VII was freakin' awesome!

just as much as I am. My enthusiasm for it is making some close to me nauseous. Of course they haven't seen it yet.

...there wasn't enough time for them to be put in the prints for the international release dates. I guess they made it for the US release. Yay for us.

Really a perfect moment.

Holy cow. Oh well, I'll still have fantasies about her in Logan's Run.

Although I do feel creepy about drooling over her in Walkabout.
by gotilk
Seeing as how she was, what? 16?

After his climactic scene, I turned to my theatermate and said "Good ol' Joss." Weird for Marvel to introduce Coulson in the comics mere weeks before his final movie appearance.
-
any scuttlebutt on whether he's actually dead or gonna be converted into Vision or some other character?
-
To be fair, I only learned the proper annunciation after watching Spaced. Damn us yanks.

Why, he's only stunned. Like a dead parrot.

But these guys seem to really love their celebrity / starlet flesh. Not that there's anything wrong with that...
-
Please flip off the highway patrol for me. They've cost me about 1500 bucks over the years. Damn speed traps.
-
Nice guys, they really helped me out once.
-
And I swear that's never happened before.

The cops around here are a tad scary but they keep the peace. I could tell you a few persoal stories though.
-
THAT I would love to hear about. Please make it a show topic at some point. *Sir, do you know how fast you were going?* *Umm... yeah, about 20 mph slower than you clocked me at.* (600 dollars later)
-
It has a bit of that discomfort comedy feel that the office had, but with , I think, a few more actual *out loud* laughs. I hadn't really given it a real chance until these last couple of episodes. Paul Rudd REALLY elevated things, he was hilarious.
-
this talkback must seem really disjointed and bizarre.
-

Probably no more bizarre than us doing vague reactionary SNL liveblogging.
by Shermdawg

Then they should be listening. Hell to the yes...

Um, concerning that link up there for the 2nd end credits scene.
by L.H.Puttgrass
What is it with these smartphone owners who never hold their phones correctly while recording. You're shooting a movie screen that is wider than it is tall! Maybe you should hold your phone that way. Your HD video will look so much better. Just a pet peeve. No harm done.
-
you are awesome. THANKS!!
-
Damn right!
-
As far as I know the events of Star Trek: Enterprise exist in both timelines.

Whoa. Californians buy their carpets at a place called, "CARPET CAVE"?
by L.H.Puttgrass
Okay. It just puts an image in my mind of a bear sleeping in a cave, hibernating if you will, with shag carpet covering everything. And that just gives me the giggles...
-
Are you Sherm?? Good question/call. I REALLY REALLY hope that we get Fillion as Pym. Will we now officially be called *The Savages* on these talkbacks? I kinda like it. It fits.
-

Just called, got on, talked about Nathan Fillion and the confusion about Ant Man.

Why not bring back the Space-Chick that steals Spock's brain?
by L.H.Puttgrass
Or not.
-
Yeah that makes me giggle uncontrollably too. I picture a 40-ish guy in a cave, with suspenders on, greasy hair parted on the side, thick-rimmed glasses. He stands awkwardly in their commercials and cannot seem to figure out what to do with his hands as he sort of uncomfortably caresses himself up and down the front of his body like that sexually ambiguous character from old SNL, Pat. And he mouth-breathes.
-
Yeah, his hate for new Trek is almost unnatural. But I like the guy for some reason. I think he's smart as heck.
-
I remember you from some talkback. I think you helped with something. Great call, man. Welcome!
-
Enterprise is like the anti-Deep Space Nine. The bad episodes far outweighed the good.

Lay in to him gotilk.

If you get an interview with Cumberbatch (wow, that's even funny to type)
by gotilk
you MUST pressure him to discuss the idea of him taking over for Matt Smith when he decides to leave Doctor Who. OR the possibility of taking over the role of the Master.
-
Tons of fun, people. Everyone. The hosts, the talkbackers. Great fun. Let's do it again soon, okay?
-
See you next week! ***kisses***
-
I'm mixed on Enterprise. When it worked, it was great. When it didn't, boy was it a stinker. Beyond almost anything else though, that theme song risked ruining the show EVERY damned time for me. It was THAT bad.... *It's been a lahhong road... gettin' from there to heayah..... * ungh! Disturbingly horrific.
-
Thank you for the question! I was so excited when I heard the first part of his sentence at Comic-con. That was one of that year's hugest misinterpreted stories. I felt bad setting the record straight for many, many con-goers. -Mike
-
I agree. And yes, DS9 is leagues better, but I still enjoyed it....definitely much more than Voyager.
-
Yeah, Kern County. What can ya do??? We are not ALL rednecks. There are a few brains floating around...
-
It's as disturbing as some of those It's Pat skits. Very disturbing. Yet funny.

by L.H.Puttgrass
... are they dangerous? Do they attempt to take over your mind or any other bad activities?

but thought The Doctor and Seven were big fun. I thought Enterprise much, much more wobbly than Voyager. Having said that, I watched every episode of every Star Trek series. If they make more I'll probably watch all of those too. I suspect DS9 will always be my fave. Oh that Garak!
-
Yaaaaaaayyyyyy!!

*chirp-Cheeeee-irp!* *Eeeeeep! Che-irrrrp!* *Cheep-Cheeeep* *chirp-Cheeeee-irp!* *Chee-irp-Cheeeep* Oh, look! A full moon! *Cheep-Cheeeerp* Wow.
-
Really bugged me in fact.
-
Yeah, well pretty much all of AM radio is just overwhelmingly Conservative talk. Most of it in the realm of nutbaggery. THIS show, however, bucks the trend. In the extreme. Really fun show.
-
I'm sort of still around. It was great to hang out with you again. The stream is still on, I forgot to close it. Something about the *stop Obama express*. To *save America*. So funny that they don't realize they got the conservative (or at least right-leaning moderate) they wanted in the White House and don't even realize it. He's pretty much Reagan with a soft spot for appearing slightly intelligent. Something tells me the *Stop Obama Express* will stop over in *RomneyIsUnelectableStan* before it comes to the end of the line at *AnyoneButTheMormonTon*. Doesn't bug me that he's a Mormon at all. I know a lot of great people who just happen to also be Mormon. I just think America itself was much more ready for a black president than it is for a Mormon president. As messed up as that is.
-
than his policy. Not that people are less worried about the race thing. I'm over-explaining myself again.

But I'm in the central time zone so I get it from 10 to 12. Had to dvr snl. Its 10:30 to 12. Yes, AM radio is full of conservative talk shows. Many of which feature hosts who go way overboard with their "nutbaggery". I listen to AM radio at work and home while on the computer for "filler" or news, weather, & sports. Some of the talkshows are fairly even-handed, usually the local ones. But some of them aren't. The nationally syndicated ones can be the worst. They can fly off the tracks with humorous results. And sometimes not. Sometimes they can be kinda scary. Ever listen to Savage when he gets to ranting? Yikes. It is a bit lop-sided on the airwaves though. Liberal talkshows are few and far between. Nationally you got NPR and not much else. Remember when they launched Air America? I thought it would work. With all the conservative shows on the air there should have been more than enough of a programming void to fill. Just like right wing radio, they had shows that were usually fair with their content and they had shows that could get as batshit crazy as Michael Savage. For whatever reason, they folded. Hell, Limbaugh has been on since the 80's and they were on for what? 5 years? It's weird how that worked out. Limbaugh tried TV and had to call it quits. They tried to launch a liberal radio network and also had to call it quits. On TV it's almost all liberal except for Fox News and on the radio it's almost all conservative except for NPR. And where are the moderates? I don't know. All I know for sure is that tomorrow I need to get my ass to the theater and see The Avengers! I know I've been spoiled for most of it. But then again, how can you really spoil a movie called The Avengers? If they don't win at the end, then they didn't AVENGE anything, did they? You couldn't call them The Avengers, right? And they are The Avengers. Yes they are.
-
Dang it. I'm going to bed.
-
Yeah, I'm not sure why Air America tanked. I heard it was bad management and on air talent that was constantly unhappy and badly managed. Didn't they hire and fire Marc Maron like... 3 times? Bad sign. BTW, I loved Maron's morning show there. Do you remember an obscure but almost nationwide network called the Comedy Network? Man, that was a fun experiment. They had a show that was GREAT with Alan Havey and Susan Olsen (yep. THAT Susan Olsen, Cindy Brady). She was hilarious and odd. I used to call in, as well as a few of the other shows. There's a guy named Wil Wilkins who has a very well known podcast now that I used to chat with almost daily as he was working tech or production at the network at the time. Really fun thing to interact with, I was sad when they collapsed. I think Marc Maron goes into what happened to Air America on his podcast, or maybe in another interview. (Kevin Pollock's Chat Show maybe?) My opinion of why Air America didn't take off? They advertized as the LIBERAL network instead of just having balanced programming and not calling attention to it. AND I think it leaned a little too far to the left. Yes, I lean pretty far to the left as well, but I still have business sense. You know? Also, I don't think they effectively marketed the network. I don't think enough of the people that would have loved the network knew about it. The same reason why I think DISNEY'S john carter failed. Simple as that. Yeah, it had bad marketing... but the Disney name was far too prominent for a property people were not familiar with. Too many assumed it was a kid's movie. Anyway, late response.... sorry. Always cool to chat it up with you.
-
Sometimes, *on the nose* is a bad marketing move. If I wanted to promote communism (an example) in the US, I would NOT start a network called The Commie network. Even Fox is smart enough to not call themselves The CONSERVATIVE RIGHT WING NUTBAG NETWORK. They call themselves *fair and balanced* instead and say things like... we report, you decide. lol
-
I can watch that scene for days

gotilk - Don't get me started on Disney's handling of the "Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Princess of Mars" marketing campaign.
by L.H.Puttgrass
Oh, I'm so sorry. I meant, the "Disney's John Carter" marketing campaign. *John Carter? Wasn't that Jimmy's brother?* *Yea, I think they called him Johnny though.* *Uh huh, he used to drink all that beer. But why would Disney make a movie about him?* *Dang! Looks like he's hallucinatin' or sumpin'! I ain't bringin' my kids to see some drunk frolickin' wit four armed green people!* *Too bad, though. That tattooed girl is a bit of a looker.* *Yeah, too bad. Roll me anuther one of those, will ya?*
-
Its official- largest opening ever. Suck it, Whedonhaters. Suck it hard.
-
I'd laugh, because that was funny. But I think it'd turn into a cry.
-
Yep, suck it long and suck it hard. Pretty shiny opening, I'd say.
-
Even though for the most part it will go unread. I have to say how OVERWHELMED I am with happiness that Mr Whedon has finally received the payday his creativity and talents have always deserved. After seeing Avengers the second time, it hit me and I gotta say I was a little choked up over it. After creating what I would say is the best sci-fi series since Trek, the man just seemed to get shit on over and over. Whoever decided to give him this shot, and I know someone knows who that one special person was (it's always one person in the end, when you really look at it).... THANK YOU! Now..... *getting on knees* Please, whoever makes this decision... Next time out, no matter if it's the next Iron Man, Thor, Avengers.... whatever... No matter HOW much of a pain in the ass it is... NATIVE 3D or NO 3D please. PLEASE? Please no more of these conversions. They are improving, and the Avengers conversion was one of the best, but it's just not the same and you can FEEL and SENSE it. It obviously didn't hurt this one, but it's still a problem. Why not fix it? You don't want to see a grown man beg do you? Why does it matter so much to me? You got an hour of reading time to kill? The reasons vary, from ulterior motives (indoctrinating people into the idea of VR in the mainstream) to just a pure love of these movies. Can you imagine what this would have looked like in native 3d, in an Imax (or even FauxMax) theater? Mind blowing.
-
May 7, 2012, 12:46 p.m. CST
gotilk - Yup, Disney sure screwed the pooch on that one.
by L.H.Puttgrass
The naming of the film and the ad campaign were complete and utter bollocks. People unfamiliar with the Mars books didn't know what Disney was talking about. I seen it in IMAX 3D. And it was a cool time at the movies. I can understand the hate from those who were led astray by the crappy marketing. They thought they were getting movie "A" but instead got movie "B". Anyway, Disney blew a few hundred million on what should have been easy money. Idiots.
-
I saw it in 2D because I can't get to an IMAX screen til next weekend. Doesn't matter though! BECAUSE IT WAS FUCKING GREAT!!! Eat it, haters!! And there are haters. Read the bad reviews. There are a few out there. Such sad, sad people. It's like Christmas Day came and they're still pissed! I thought all the characters had good scenes. And the Hulk? Good Lord! Simply a great flick. Give us a smile, Joss! You've earned it.
